Welcome to 2007 – 2008

It’s a slow start to the close season, but still some movement from the club on new contracts for at least one, and possibly two young players.
No doubting the source for the news that Emmanuel Eboue has signed a new ‘long-term’ contract. Arsenal.com provide the news that will delight some, but not all, Gooners. The right-back provokes mixed opinions and I have to confess I am firmly in the camp that feels embarrassed by his play-acting, diving, and over-reacting. To be fair to him it looked over the closing weeks of the season as though he was doing something about those traits, and I cannot deny that he gives us a real attacking threat down the right hand side. This could well be the turning point for him, I certainly hope so.
From less authoritative sources come the second-hand whispers that Nicklas Bendtner is set to sign a new five year deal with the Gunners. The young striker grabbed thirteen goals during a season long loan at Birmingham City. He is expected return to the Grove to form a quartet of attacking options next term with Thierry Henry, Robin Van Persie, and Emmanuel Adebayor.
Remember when the end of season meant just that? Every other season when there was no major tournament taking place you could switch off until mid-June when the league fixtures were announced, and hopefully a month after that the friendlies would start and you could start buying tickets for the new season. It’s a sign of the times that Arsenal have already started selling tickets for the pre-season Emirates Cup at prices ranging from £25-50, a nice little ‘incentive’ for you to renew your membership for next season while the body of the last is barely cold. Consumers? Oh no, not us, we’re fans!

Let’s Hope Wenger allows Hoyte and Eboue to go head to head for the right back slot as i’d hate to think the Eboue has the position cemented as his own. Both players have good aspects to their game, Hoyte being the better defensive option in my opinion, but with Eboue being the better going forward. The main Concern with Eboue and nearly every Arsenal related site has touched on this, is not only his problem with going to ground but play acting on injures. What annoys me is that he’s a good player how shouldn’t have to resort to this and quite simply it’s not the Arsenal way.
