The King Is Dead – Long Live The King

News that Barcelona believe they have agreed a deal with Thierry Henry and are now discussing the financial compensation with Arsenal come as little surprise, even on the back of Jerome Anderson’s vehement denials that any discussions had taken place.
Since signing eight years ago Henry has assured himself of legendary status at Arsenal after becoming the first player to grab a double century of goals for the club. Last summer he turned down a move to Barca and signed a three year extension to his existing deal in North London, saying at the time “This is my last contract. It is where I belong.”
However, after a season in which he has struggled for form and fitness Arsene Wenger has clearly decided the time is right for club and captain to part. In so doing he risks a backlash from fans who are still waiting for new signings to materialise during the close season.
Those fans are clearly divided as to the wisdom of allowing Henry to move on, or the reported fee of $16m. Firstly I would argue that due to the length of his contract Henry would definitely not be moving unless Wenger and Arsenal were happy for him to do so. Secondly, the deal is not yet complete so the reported transfer fee may be a complete fabrication by the Spanish radio station that broke the story. Thirdly, it may be there are factors of which we are not aware that would reduce Henry’s value.
Human nature being what it is there is bound to be some reaction. For my part I would like to say that if and when the deal is completed Thierry Henry will leave me with a whole host of happy memories, and I will be very sorry to see him go.
Down the years though I have been really sorry to see the likes of Baker, George, Brady, Wright, and Vieira sold on. We have evolved without them and will continue to do so.
Good luck Titi, and thanks.

A bit disapointed after Henry’s “This will be my last contract” comments last year, but how can you stay angry at this legend of a man??
