What A Weak End
Jun 3rd, 2007 by 'holic
What a strange weekend that was. It started with Gilberto Silva thinking he had scored the first goal at the new Wembley in a full international. However the flag of an assistant referee, who clearly didn’t go to Specsavers, robbed the Gunner of the honour.
Saturday and Sunday have served to inform me of precious little that hadn’t already been made up as desperate newspapers chase rumours, and like a fool I did not back ‘Gooner’ Frankie Dettori in the Derby. You know things are quiet on the sporting front when a horse race is the main event of the weekend.
Never mind, even though we have no major championship to look forward to in the next couple of months there is still much to be anticipated over the coming days. Or maybe not. With a pretty full international programme taking place there are unlikely to be any major moves being negotiated, so the same old rumours will be peddled for another week.
Steve McClaren will be praying that Estonia do not prove as stubborn as the goat-herders and cheese-makers of Andorra were in Eng-er-land’s last qualifier. Ranked one hundred and tenth in the world, the Estonian’s boast Mart Poom in their squad. A decent performance from him could just hasten the inevitable departure of the hapless McClaren.
Oh, nearly forgot. The Colorado Rapids lost 2-1 to Toronto in the Hickory Smoked Something Or Other Soccer Ladder. They must have one poor owner.

It has been a slow weekend, hasn’t it!?!
I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself for the next 6 weeks or so, I’m already contemplating a dip in the Thames via london bridge. Every football fan suffers in the summer, espically when, as you said, there’s no tournament.
One thing I will note is that with every year that passes the summer get’s more depressing, not easier to stomach. If that’s the case with everyone, I dread to think how you must feel 😉
Hope you’re keeping well ‘Holic.
