Freddie Goes, And Danny Stays
Jul 23rd, 2007 by 'holic
Well it was six months in the completion but Freddie Ljungberg has finally ended up at the East London retirement home that previously housed the likes of Bobby Gould, John Radford, Stewart Robson, Liam Brady, Nigel Winterburn, and Ian Wright.
I posted my thoughts on Freddie back in January when the ‘West Ham Repository for Knackered Gunners’ first cast envious eyes in his direction. Nothing has changed my view since then. I can forgive some of the comments attributed to him today because the guy never gave less than a hundred percent for the Arsenal cause. Thanks for everything Freddie, and I hope that permanently swollen foot will feel a little less painful now the Icelandic biscuit seller is picking up your incredible salary.
Another recurring story today saw Daniel Fiszman come out once again to assure fans that he would not be selling his shares to Stan Kroenke, Bernie Ecclestone, The Shah of Iran, Vlad the Impaler, or any other vulture being linked by the popular press to the Gunners.
Following on from the weekend pronouncements by Keith Edelman, it would appear that the board are reacting positively to recent criticism from some quarters that they are not communicating effectively with the supporters. What chances, I wonder, of a statement by Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith by the weekend?
Anyway, I digress. The sentence that jumps out from the Fiszman statement is ‘There are exciting times ahead with the team showing so much promise, we are energised by what the future holds.” I like the enthusiasm for the future and the use of the word ‘we’. This is exactly the sort of thing we have been waiting to see from the current board.

It’s great to see the club really trying to balance the negative press and non-stop speculation we’ve been getting with lots of positive PR pieces on Arsenal.com. But it’s funny how the ‘fans’ who are quick to swallow every negative story in the media are much more critical when it comes from the horses mouth! Shows who they think has more credibility – some Arsenal hating hack or the people who say ‘we’ and mean it when they talk about Arsenal.
Exactly, passenal. Its re-assuring to hear such talk from the Board, and its long over-due, IMO. I think the current Board is doing a good job with the club and its high time the Board came out with more such positive PR regarding the new stadium and the club’s future.
Sad to see Freddie go, though he has made it a little easier to handle with his comments, which are quite disappointing. I had hoped that Freddie would rise above the ‘Arsenal lack ambition’ nonsense (and then he moves to WEST HAM !!)
But at the end of the day, good memories of him. We can forgive him his comments, I think, which were made out of disappointment/bitterness/a realisation that he was no longer 1st choice at arsenal.
It’s about time that the board came out and said that they’re not interested and that’s that. End of. Fiszman’s statement is a step in the right direction and we need him to keep all of his share’s or a takeover bid could be triggered. But the guy’s a gooner, and if I were in his position I would want to keep things as they are and make my money from all the diamonds. Don’t be fooled – he’s still Danny from the block.
To be fair DT – ‘Danny from the block’ was just reiterating the statement he made in April, which people had conveniently forgotten. However, it was good to see him standing up for himself and the club.
