Panto Time At The Grove.
Dec 20th, 2007 by 'holic
During a recent burglary at Tottenham’s ground, the entire contents of the trophy room were stolen. The police are looking for a man with a navy blue and white carpet!
Yes, it’s that week again, endless repeats of ‘Only Fools And Horses’, ‘Morecambe and Wise’ and of course, ‘Beat Your Neighbour’.
The Saturday lunchtime clash with the club destined to take our place in the top four of the Premiership has been accorded a little added spice by the draw for the Carling Cup semi-final. The team that led our youths 2-0 at the same stage last season have been given the opportunity to fold in the face of superior young players all over again.
‘Enough already’, I can hear my cousin saying. And there is the rub, for large numbers of supporters of both clubs who have their roots in North London there are family divides detracting from the spirit of Christmas this weekend.
So I should try to be fair in my anticipation of the game. Spurs fans will be the first to confess to frustration that the season has not panned out the way they were hoping for back at the commencement of hostilities.
As Thierry Henry departed to sunnier climes our neighbours splashed out sixteen and a half million on Darren Bent and taunted us with tales of their new found ascendancy north of the river.
Typical of the real early season fortunes of both sides was the clash at the Lane. You know the story, club in bottom three lifted for local derby, club in bottom three wins free-kick and scores first, club at the top of the league takes over and scores three without reply to leave club in bottom three, well, in the bottom three!
Spurs, however, have hauled themselves back up to mid-table obscurity with the arrival of Juande Ramos, manager of the Sevilla side beaten 3-0 at the Grove just four days after our 3-1 win at the Lane. Indeed in the last week they have ended the unbeaten home records of both Portsmouth and Manchester City, so the poor deluded souls have been offered hope of an historic hat-trick.
Sadly for them Arsenal will be at full-strength, with only Theo Walcott missing out on the chance to improve his strike rate. Also sadly for them I understand that Paul Robinson is fit and will keep goal. There is, I’m told, no truth in the rumour that Spurs have been training this week with a bell in the ball so he can hear it coming.
The ‘holic pound is not going to be pumped on a final score. Let’s face it, it could be anything. I will however plant it firmly on Emmanuel Adebayor to score first. The big man has revelled against Cinderobinson and I fancy he could do it again.
Don’t forget kids, when he does you have to scream at Paul, ‘I’TS BEHIND YOU!’ .
