1973 And All That
Mar 18th, 2008 by 'holic
Apologies to all, but I have had a lot of things to attend to today, so this is a ‘lazy’ blog post. Not an excuse, I know. Normal service will resume as soon as possible.
I do however have five minutes in which to thank gonko for his comment last night, and the memories it stirred as I struggled to get to sleep. Let me recap on his behalf.
“Norman Burtenshaw changing his mind and awarding a penalty after a foul on George Armstrong in a cup game in 1973. Frank Mclintock dragged him over to a linesman after he first awarded s free kick on the edge of the area. We were a goal down Charlie scored the penalty and Ray Kennedy went on to net the winner”
I remember it only too well gonko. There are a lot of stories that will be told one day about that season. I was on the coach that rolled off the motorway coming back from Old Trafford. We had all manner of fixtures on midweek afternoons because of the fuel crisis and lots of football fans of all clubs were skipping work and school to attend.
That cup tie against Chelsea was a massive game and for some reason I recall being on the Clock End where supporters of both sides were well and truly ‘mingled’. Going a goal down was a horrible feeling for a sixteen year old surrounded by ‘the enemy’, but what an unbearable little beggar I became as we got hold of the contest and triumphed.
Anyway, my five minutes is up so I’ll just leave you with this action shot from the game in question. Bob Wilson will thank me for posting proof of his agility. Thanks for reminding me.

Not a word on the successful completion of your TV fight?
Or did I miss it?
You did miss it Ollie, buried at the bottom of this post:-

Ah yeah. I just thought he would mention it on the day of the launch, as he wouldn’t believe it before he actually saw it on his screen.
Cheers.
Sorry Ollie. Late riser today. Must have been all that Arsenal TV last night! We won the league at Old Trafford, you know.
😉
16 in 1973? You were at least double that in 1973!
Funny you should mention the 70’s. I took the legends tour at The Emirates on Tuesday. We Had John Radford as our guide. I managed to get him on his own after the tour and spoke to him about Vital. I asked for a number of a booking agent, but he gave me his own number!
He told me a funny story about a team talk that Bertie Mee gave when we played United in 71. I’ll have to tell you it some time. It was quite funny.
