Gunners Announce Barnet Squad
Jul 17th, 2009 by 'holic
The names revealed on Arsenal.com for the trip to Underhill reveal a couple of things.
Firstly it would appear that Mikael Silvestre is still an integral part of the squad, but Philippe Senderos will not feature this season. Perhaps the latter is no surprise, but there have been rumblings that the former United defender would not be around for a second season.
There is a danger of adding two and two and making five here, but I would have thought the Frenchman would be at best our fifth choice central defender, and third choice left back this season. Unless of course there is to be a further departure or two?
Another telling absentee is Armand Traore. Back from his year at Portsmouth he must now be looking at best at another season out on loan. That’s a shame, but illustrates perfectly the standards young players need to reach if they are to succeed at Arsenal.
Whilst the starting line-up is likely to have a relatively familiar defence and midfield, the striking roles will be filled by hopefuls. Jay Simpson should start, and depending on who has looked sharpest in training he could be joined by Gilles Sunu, Sanchez Watt, or Nacer Barazite.
I’m looking forward to seeing the latter who is back from a year on loan at Derby County. Older readers may remember Roy Wegerle, a silky performer for QPR, Blackburn, and Coventry in the early nineties. The young Dutchman has a similar style, easy on the eye with the ability to produce the unexpected. He could be a revelation in a withdrawn role just behind a target man, although that is one area where we are starting to look stronger.
Most of all though I am looking forward to seeing forty-five minutes of Tomas Rosicky. Perhaps some enterprising soul will be selling ‘I saw Rosicky play!’ teeshirts outside the ground. It’s eighteen months since Tomas limped out of a cup tie against Newcastle with an injury described by Arsene Wenger as “not a serious one, but a strange one”. You can say that again. Anyway, welcome back Tomas, it will be great to see you in the famous red shirt once more.
I’ll be back at some stage of Sunday with as much as I can remember of the game. If you are going I may bump into you. The weather forecast, once promising, now suggests that showers may be around before the afternoon is out. Sod it. I’m still wearing shorts and shades. It’s July for goodness sake!
Have a good weekend ‘holics, and be happy. Arsenal are back.

Half please barkeep
Bring the shades J, we can pretend to be the Blues Brothers 🙂
Blues brothers or Booze brothers.?
Should be interesting to see Rosicky get a run out, I am hoping that He, Cesc and Arshavin can be our holy trinity for this year, their footballing intelligence should be too much for most teams.
Or Reservoir Dogs
I’m looking forward to this
Are you talkin ta me?
Senderos – Eduardo missing could also mean anything
Armand mising does not mean jay wont be sold eventually or go on loan.
the team taken to high Barnet is probably or the manager’s choice.
lets not add anything to it
from n. ireland so only get to see about 4 or 5 games a season but the summer is driving me bonkers, does anyone know is there anywhere i can watch it online or anything? btw lookin forward to the new season, but is it just me, or is anyone else concerned about this maurone chamkh (its probably not spelt right but quite frankly (my dear) i dont give a dam) being ade’s replacement… kinda feels like we are replacing him with someone who aint as good… to my mind it aint how we should be doing business! anyway if there’s anyone who knows if the game is gona be shown online or on tv or anythin lemme know pls!!!!
p.s. actually really excited (even though its just a friendly type thing) about seein rosicky playing for us again… when fit and ready (to rumble) he’s one of our better players!
Traore not back in training cos he has been on international duty with France U20 so do not read too much into him not being at Barnet
Eduardo said last week he would not fact Barnet but would play in one of the games in Austria
I’m sooo jealous. An afternoon basking in the sun watching the young lads… The best I can hope for around here is Barca vs. some Mexican team next month at Emirates’ prices…
Enjoy yourselves you lucky guys!
Oh and something fun about Adebayor:
….But the City were amazed to discover that the Togo forward has been touted to Chelsea as he continues to stall on a £25million move to Eastlands. Adebayor even met Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger yesterday over the possibility of staying at the Emirates for another season, but the Gunners are adamant they do not want him back and are keen to honour the deal agreed with City…
