I Want The 2007/8 Adebayor, But This One Can Go
Jul 14th, 2009 by 'holic
What a day this had been. I suppose it was only a matter of time before Manchester City, with so much money to spend, and so little time to spend it, came calling for Emmanuel Adebayor. Snubbed by the likes of Kaka and Eto’o, the Middle Eastlands club have turned their attention to the apparently available Arsenal striker.
I think it is fair to say that reactions have been mixed, which is not altogether surprising given the rift that opened up last summer. All hell broke loose at an Adidas event in Vienna when Adebayor gave a television interview claiming he was keen to stay at Arsenal before walking into a press conference next door and virtually begging for a move just minutes later.
“He (Wenger) put me where I am today, no doubt about that, but if he sells me…they are going to get 50, maybe 60 million for me and they bought me for ten, so everyone is getting the benefits”. A year ago the big fella had a somewhat inflated idea of his value!
If that damaged his rapport with a large chunk of the Arsenal support before a ball had been kicked last season, then his televised interview on Football Focus just before it ended merely served to confirm the breakdown in the relationship after a difficult year. It was not a surprise to see him linked with Milan, Chelsea, and of course City, this summer, despite signing a new long-term deal with Arsenal last August.
I have been looking for articles by writers I trust, but they aren’t there, so it becomes a question of assembling the pieces of the jigsaw and drawing your own conclusion. Sensibly this time around it looks as though the player himself is keeping quiet.
According to the Guardian,
‘The two clubs have agreed a fee, believed to be closer to Arsenal’s asking price of £25m than City’s original offer of £20m’.
To start with I expect that £25m would be the lowest figure that Arsenal would accept, and would have been asking a lot more. Then there is the small matter of his existing contract. I may be doing the player a considerable disservice, but I doubt he is willingly relinquishing the riches that remain contractually. He will argue he has not requested the move in writing.
Nonetheless, Mark Hughes has confirmed that contact has been made, “there have been discussions and there is possibly a deal to be done but nothing has been concluded”. All of which strongly hints that closure is imminent, but the details have not been nailed down.
My feelings about Adebayor are no secret. After a couple of dodgy years he blossomed in the 2007-2008 season. That thirty goal return is still held up by his supporters as evidence of his ability. His work rate could not be questioned. That Adebayor will be sorely missed and is worth a lot more than £25m when cash-rich suitors come calling. I want to keep that Adebayor.
Sadly though, that Adebayor got lost somewhere between Vienna and the season just ended. What we had was an injury prone, workshy, moody frontman. The money on offer once again seems attractive, particularly if there is any suggestion that he could become a negative influence on a young dressing room.
I’m torn by the argument I make that we need to supplement the experience we have at the club, not lessen it, but £25m could bring in a capable replacement with none of the baggage, and maybe even the mythical missing midfielder too.
At the end of the day this deal is all about money, and as long as Arsenal, not Adebayor, get the bulk of what is on offer then on balance I’m in favour of him going. He may well be a revelation in his early days at Eastlands, but his history with his country, with Monaco, and now with Arsenal, suggests he may always be a problem just waiting to happen.
Sadly.

I heard that the Fabiano deal to Milan is dead. Maybe they could get into a bidding war with Citeh?
Well I can dream can’t I!
I like soccer.
That’s basically my take, ‘holic. If Ade showed up to training ready to repeat the season from two years ago and understood WHY the fans and Arsene had gone cold shoulder on him, I’d welcome him back in a heartbeat.
But I think he’s totally oblivious to what his presented attitude has done and just how poorly his season was last year. Granted, he scored a fair share of goals, and even some important and brilliant ones (Villareal, especially). But those performances were few and far between, and the intervening time was spent either petulantly or just plain invisible. Those last two matches against United were beyond shambolic.
I don’t wish anything bad on Ade. I don’t “hate” him or anything like that. But I do believe firmly that for all parties considered, it’s best to part ways at this time.
Please – £25m for that lazy piece of shit who couldn’t even move a muscle in either leg of the CL Semi? That muthafucker isn’t worth £25. Fuck him. He is constantly offside, he’s a money grabbing shithead and his finishing is dreadful. Fuck you Adebayor. You cunt.
I have on good authority (from inside on Man City) that Arsenal and Citeh have agreed to a fee, all that’s left are Bayor’s personal requirements.
I agree with what you’ve said. I figure, all in all, I’ll wish him the best of luck, as long as it’s not against us.
I like soccer a lot.
It’s called football.
Boom Shak-a-Lak Rudeboy!
I like football.
Why should he turn up when he has been disrespected and spat on by the fans for a whole season because he requested a pay rise. What the hell has VP been doing throughout the summer but he does it quietly like a thief in the night! At the end of the day, the end game is the same irrespective of the tactics used. They both requested for more money.
Ade deserves to leave due to the treatment he has suffered under the fans for the past season. It is impossible to work productively under those hostile conditions. Additionally, if he stays the fans still will never respect him.
All the best Ade, you deserve to be at a club that has your full backing, from the boardroom to the back benches.
25m million for that useless piece of shit. The only thing he was good at last year was getting offside.Any Gooner who says what about his 30 goals the previous season just say to them what di he do in the”BIG” games at the end of last season v fa cup semi and the two CL semis.Fuck all thats what.He needs 5 chances to score one goal.Citeh can have the lazy cunt.He is just a mercenary
Go fuck yourself Herdee, what did you do during the CL semis apart from switch your tv off (EDITED – Please cut the vilest personal abuse, thanks.)
Thegame…your a re nuts… RVP is loyal to the club not to the money!
RVP scored against the rest of the top 4 this season ….ade …..0 shows he can do it against the best !
Well atleast the adebayor above has a huge amount of sarcasm, but tbh yeah will miss old self i beleive and when he is there he does make arsenal a better side but i think for 25m its best for both parties, although most likely the same sort of money wont be spent on another player but hey Man u say there taking a leaf out of are book and are using the youth so maybe we starting something?
Does anyone no if der willl be any live feeds for the pre-season game on saturday. Not Arsenal TV online.
Shhhhh y’all’ll jinx it! Not a word until £25m big ones are safely under my bed. Thought I’d really screwed the pooch not selling him last summer, I like Citeh.
Eoin, chances are you will find it on Justin, or Ustream, on the day. Sadly I won’t be able to help you on Saturday as I am going, but good luck.
I don’t no of any live feeds, does anyone else!!
Thanks, enjoy the match btw.
Im really disappointed to be losing Adebayor.
Our team has a hole in CM which must be addressed, and now we have another hole to fill. I think Ade is a great player, and though he was disappointing last season, I think all our team were poor generally. It was never so difficult to pick an Arsenal player of the season as it was this time around.
I just hope Arsene brings in a better front-man, because if he doesnt, we have gone backwards yet again.
Love him or hate him, we are losing a player of great strength and experience. Two things we are crying out for. I suppose at the end of the day, I trust Arsene to get it right.
good riddance to the lazy offside cunt, I hope the money is reinvested in the team and to be used to pay of the debt……..
Ok – the man was a bit of an idiot last year with mouthing off, but it’s hard to argue with a 16 goal return in a poor season. Personally, I had hoped that he would stay, but it isn’t going to happen and now we will probably be bringing in someone with an unproven pedigree in the Premiership. We already have 2 crocks (RVP and Eduardo) and 2 improving, but unproven strikers (Bendtner and Vela) as well as one who will never cut it as a striker (Walcott).
I am a little pessimistic on this one at the moment. Hopefully I will be proven wrong.
clooci.com do you even have a clue what you are talking about? Footballers loyal to clubs, now that is rare. JT is testament to that.
Listen… VP questioned the clubs ambition leading up to this contact negotiations and then started singing from a different hymn book once he got the contract he desired! He subsequently started talking about keeping the team together etc… Its obvious he was trying to maneuver an angle for himself…either that club provides him with an improved offer or he will leave on the notion that the club couldnt match his ambition… read between then lines! All footballers are the same, they are all after money and couldnt careless about the clubs / fans that endorse their glutenous lifestyles
Additionally, Ade has more of a right to 80k than VP who is injured for a large percentage of the season and can only dream of replicating a season like Ade in 07/08.
TheGame – do you honestly think he was “disrespected and spat on by the fans for a whole season because he requested a pay rise”? Wake up. He angled for a pay rise in the most distasteful way possible by taking the piss out of the club.
Wenger seem determined to replace ade with Chamakh. Although he is a proven quality in the french league. I doubt if he will adapt quick enough to the premier league for Arsenal to challange. Does anyone no more information about Chamakh, all I know is he’s quick, a good dribbler and very strong in the air. However, others seem to think he may not have the character. Anyone have a better insight of the player??
I’ll have a whiskey chaser, please ‘Holic.
Oh, and I’ll personally drive Greedybayor and his Materazzi to Eastlands if it will speed up the transfer!
Stuart – It was obvious the fans resented him for his off field antics during the off season and they made it known that he was unwanted throughout the season.
So what he requested a pay rise…. so many players, inc your angel VP do the exact same thing but connive behind the scene like a wolf dressed in sheeps clothing.
I didnt like the way Ade went about it but its no different to what other players do, he is just upfront about it! (Terry – a prime example)
I sincerely feel, if the fans supported him throughout the season then we would have seen a better and more productive Ade.
He deserves to go as the fans do not support him.
‘holic, will you be up for the pre-season match against Maidenhead on 28th July?
Maidenhead United v Arsenal
Pre-season Friendly, York Road
Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 19:45
It is the oldest continuous football league ground in the country after all. Tickets a tenner. Only snag being that most of the squad will be, I believe, in Austria, but it will be an Arsenal XI…
…continuous use… that is…
LET’S FACE IT £25MILLION FOR THAT WORTHLESS SACK OF SHIT IS OUTSTANDING BUSINESS. WHAT WOULD MAKE IT BETTER IS IF WE WERE TO NOW GO OUT AND SPEND THE LOT ON AN ESTABLISHED STRIKER TO PLAY UPFRONT WITH VAN PERSIE. ETO’O WOULD FORM A GOOD PARTNERSHIP WITH HIM. SUCH A DEAL WOULD CHEER THE FANS UP AND HAVE US CHALLANGING FOR THE TITLE AGAIN. ANYTHING LESS PROVES WERE JUST A FEEDER CLUB FOR THE BIG SIDES!
STILL CAN’T BELIEVE WERE OFFLOADING HIM FOR £25MILLION. HE’S WORTH £8MILLION TOPS.
8 million tops? At £40 each?
Jebus! That’s a lot of Nylon my friend.
AFC FAN – You are a stupid individual and writing in cap just makes you far less intelligent
I know York Road only too well, Snail. I played there often enough! I will see if I can get over.
Eoin, I have seen a lot of Chamakh this season. He will fit in, have no fears on that score. He is as good a target man as there is in Europe, and a tremendous workrate. My only concern is that sadly, he is not a natural finisher. (Bit of a drawback for a striker!)
He won’t score thirty goals, but he’ll probably score a dozen and set up double that, if he can see off the challenge of a hopefully improving Bendtner. That competition will be healthy.
with all said we were mugged or disrespect by citeh ok ade might be shit but he go to be better than chamakh or citeh would of gone for him some of us gooners dont see the bigger picture even if ade is shit he was arsenal shit we should of got more money for him how is john terry worth more than ade they are willing to pay 40m for a defender they ran out of options for a named striker tevez belonged to kia which big club player have sign apart from robino from madrid who was going to chelsea and though was manu he was at barry av santcruz blackburn eto refused them 1yr on is cotract 25m ade 3yr+ on contract 25m we should have got more we cant go in the market with that 25m for a proper striker villa benzema aguero ezebo demb ba pato huntelaar the russian potr—–forgot is name dentho few of them 20to 25mmost 30to60m what are we doing selling for 25m to buy a 7m striker yes is economics but we here to win football matches melo cdm 21m jt 40m I cant get over this not ade the money we took is crap we refuse 35m last season when that was great now taking25m when it hot to buy a 7m player that a and we gooner happy we looking for progression not backwards we should have got more
i lv ade. n al miss him. we r all kinda racists without a doubt because jose antonio reyes did worse than just one interview wanting to leave. the subject about e money is overrated because rvp was holding out for more money without saying it publically. ade didnt repeat his 30 goals because he was injured n when fit played ahead of an injury hit midfield he flopped in the semi against utd as did fab and everyone else apart from song and almunia for one leg. Oh and as much as i lv robin he will never hit 30 in one season or score 6 in a cl season which the ‘lazy one’did last year. i wonder who will replac ade as the next hate black figure! REYES DID WORSE BUT GOT THE SUPPORT. no drink for me tonight bar man al be fine. who am i kidding? a full glass of club will do.
So maybe Chamakh has the potential to be a top class target man. And, i also think from what i’ve heard, he will be a excellent partner for Eduardo
WHY THANK YOU FOR THE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM THEGAME.
I shall take it onboard
TheGame, Ade did not spend the season getting grief off the fans. Eboue got worse.
What was most noticeable home and away was the absence of the enthusiastic support he had garnered by his effort and work rate of the previous two seasons.
It’s absence had everything to do with his conduct last summer, and his obvious lack of effort on the pitch.
Arsene wants him out, he made that quite clear in a recent interview. Blame the boss if you want to, not the fans.
ol – You do bring up a valid point and ive been constructing a similar argument. I dont think its an issue of race, its more to do with an issue of nationality. Hes from Togo, an African country therefore why should he be earning high wages? In the IT sector they call it outsourcing, buying competitive reason for a fraction of the price.
There have been several players that deserve the fans disgruntlement but this fails to materialise:
VP – For his contractual negotations and calling out the club for a lack of ambition
Walcott – because he has got a new 60k a week salary when he hasn’t contributed to the team consistently (I personally feel he is a terrible player)
Bentner – Remember the 4 1-on-1s he missed against …. (i cant remember)
But look at the reaction to the following players
Ade – Contractual issues
Song – Game against Fulham
Eboue – Game against Wigan
Why the double standards… i generally dont think its a conscious thing but a genuine issue worth debating
Bye, Ade (he won’t refuse 130 big ones if AW won’t refuse 25m). A top talent, he is – all the more saddening that he’s got a thug’s attitude ( called “ogbologbo” in his mother’s native tongue). Arsenal thrives only as a team and an £80k/wk Ade is simply not one. Arsenal bounced back strongly without Henri’s domineering presence in 07/08, and AW is going to count on the “togetherness” RvP spoke about to repeat itself in 09/10. So, in a sense, Ade’s leaving actually improves the team instantly and as such, no one should expect AW to rush out with the money and buy another “disrupter”.
And I don’t mind you having that debate here as long as it is kept sensible. Personally I think you are wrong. Hleb was already getting stick over his fondness for Milanese ice-cream before he hopped onto the Barcelona plane. Stick will always be given to anybody who shows disrespect, or lack of effort, for the club, be they black, white, or a strange shade of orange. (Yes, you, Mr Dein!)
The game- clearly its only you that believes these double standards need to be adresssed. For one, Alex song played woefully against Fulham, but hes is now a clear memeber of our squad that little supportes would like to see go. As for bendtner, he is constantly under cristism from the media and outsiders. Not because where he was born, but because there is a demand for trophies at Arsenal and potential in Bendtners case isn’t winning uus anything.
The attack has got missing loosing a potential player.last season ws a mess which He ade ws playful.he has to be gr8tful to AW that last season wenger has faith in him.so he has gone.some people w wide celeberate ade’s exit.it high time for Aw to sign a classic attacker who cn turn defenders up side down.for me my best attacker in the world is thierry henry with great pace and ability to score.the manager clled Aw is unpredictable man.we jst hpe that the big money he has gotten must be used wisely.fans all over the world checking the web site waiting, eagering to see who is coming.the question is who is really coming?
Call me old fashioned but I like to think that showing a bit of faith in people especially when they are under pressure often brings out the best in them.
the game obviously has never heard of ryan giggs or steven gerrard?
loyalty exists.
Gonnerholic – As I stated previously it is not an issue of race, it is more an issue of where you come from. Most of the fans did not go to the game with the intention of vilifying Hleb, not that I remember. A large majority of the fans, if not all supported him even though there were loud moans when he misplaced a pass or failed to shoot.
Eoin – All because you have a terrible game doesn’t mean your own fans deserve to “boo” you when you are playing for the club that pays your wages. I have seen several players (European in origin [black / white]) have terrible games but the fans did not descend to that sort of behaviour. I only see a trend against African born players.
typical gooner – Steven Gerrard? Are you serious with that statement. Wasn’t he just hours away from a move to Chelsea before Liverpool offered him a bumper contract. The only loyalty players have now is to money.
You discuss the issue of loyalty and players as if they play for these clubs for free. Wake up people!
if that’s what you believe game then i respect that. for those of us that like to think there is an ounce of dignity left in this game may believe that steven gerrard stayed with liverpool because he couldn’t bear to play in another shirt like he states in his autobiography. (agreed that it is a little cute to say such a thing)
what you believe is up to you. we all have an opinion, and for me steven gerrard is probably THE most loyal footballer left in the game today.
i am not arguing with you as i actually think a lot of the points you have made above hold water, i don’t care about money, i don’t give a shit who gets paid what, in fact it sickens me. i just want to see 11 players on a field that would die for their team, that is my “definition” of loyalty, and both of the aforementioned for me demonstrate that.
Fair point The Game
Seems the black players are the target of ridicule ever since viera left. boos for ade , eboue , gallas and song seem to be acceptable , different responses and treatment for the rest of the squad even when doing the same. this has created a division btwn the african players and the rest of the squad, very apparent during the goal celebrations when ade scores when the african players would congregate and engage in a ‘ rumba dance’ – a very african dance, i believe done to exclude other members of the team and probably a spit at the crowd which is predominantly not african descent.
probably in the best interests for ade , toure , eboue etc to leave
the end of arsenal as we have known it , a pity really , probably back to mid table mediocrity
Footballer aren’t, will and have never saved lives therefore your die statement is just hyperbole. If you dont give a shit who gets paid, then way does Ade’s wage demands after you and a large majority of the fans as much. In all honesty, thats none of our concern. As long as the players are performing and the team is producing results that justify the money the fans invest then im good. If fans get behind their players maybe they will perform and feel genuine affection for the club.
In regards to the Steven Gerrard issue, I would say Ryan Giggs/Scholes/Nedved are as loyal as you can get. I dont once think Giggs has looked at any other club even when there was massive interest in taking him to Italy when he was at the peek of his career and Italy was the most dominant league. Nedved went down with a sinking ship. Scholes, well, hes just Scholes. Gerrard considered going, that alredy lacking loyalty in my books, irrespective of whether he went or not.
Supposed racism is ridiculous…black players have always been popular at arsenal…Rocky, Thomas, Davis, Viv Anderson, Ian Wright, even raphael meade and huggy white going back a bit…
And you can’t claim its a nationality issue either: Kolo is still popular despite poor form and rumours of agitating for a move. Kanu was always popular despite being utterly inconsistant. Even the essentially useless chris wreh was popular. Basically despite the skill requirements, arsenal fans have always been sympathetic to a tryer, and will even put up with poor behaviour off the pitch to a degree if a player still tries his guts out. El Pel groves being a case in point.
Ade was far more popular when he was less successful, but worked his nuts off. In 07/08 much of his success was due to a mixture of physicality, workrate and skill. Last season the workrate was only there sporadically and this affected his performance levels and combined with angling for a move, lost him the affection of the fans.
He talked when interviewed about getting grief from his own fans and how this made him lose motivation, but oddly his work-rate was higher in the opening months of the season, when he was getting the most abuse.
He’ll be a loss, but agree with ‘holic….the 07/08 ade is a far bigger loss than last years. Sad to see him go, but £25m, + the salary savings for a player that wants to leave is good business.
Jonso – Your analyse is spot on and you came up with some issue that I didnt even think of, especially the celebration of the african lads. Great post!
Also Eboue seems to have gone through vilification and out the other side, and is now something of a cult hero, predominantly because, his outward show of emotion when given the horrid time he was, and his subsequent work-rate and effort both really endeared him to the crowd. Although he’s not really good enough, I think most people would be happy to see him stay now. Personally I think he plays with his brains in his arse, but he is clearly popular with the squad, obviously cares (sometimes to the point of losing it and costing his teammates), and we always need a slightly shit cult hero!
Alex song has now been fully accepted following his rapid improvement, and anyone who thinks he got racial abuse, really needed to look at the home grown local boy david hillier, who was a) never going to be good enough for arsenal in a million years and b) was deeply unpopular for forcing Paul Davis (a black player ) out of the team. And as for terrace abuse, eddie mcgoldrick took some right stick and he was an irishman from London….
jonso & the game…bollocks about the dance…..did you not see RVP’s embarrasingly malco-ordinated attempts to join in with said dance at the end of the season, and his wonderfully over-exuberant celebration with adebayor vs spurs. Or is he an honarary african cos his wife is half north african? Or were eduardo, gilberto and denilson celebrating together last year because they hate all non brazillians?
What about henry (a french west indian) dancing with ade?
I would love to see bentdner try to keep up with eboue..that would be wonderfully entertaining!
Matthew Wade – Eboue a CULT HERO?????//
You are having a laugh right
Regarding Eboue – I don’t understand your point about him being fully accepted by the fans. Your statement afterwards clearly shows you still hold a grip against the lad. Eboue is an establish RB who is deputising in the absence of an adequate replacement at RM, including the guys that genuinely plays with no brain, Walcott! But we have never seen the fans get on his back due to his performances.
Song had the mental strength to recover from the abuse he received from his own fans but what if he did? Additionally, it does not detract from the fact that he was booed by large sections of the arsenal fans.
In response to your rebuttal concerning the celebration of the African lad, you have a good counter argument but I still feel you are wrong. The treatment African players receive is vastly different from how other players are treated by the fans at arsenal. If you analyse the psychology, I think this is a valid point.
game you seem to be sticking me in some “general” arsenal fan bracket? i don’t quite see where you have got that from mate? i made a comment above regarding loyalty. not adebayor’s wage demands. i am entitled to an opinion whether you agree with it or not.
i actually don’t want adebayor to leave, and have said as much for the last 2 years that i have been writing on this site. much to a lot of people’s distaste. i personally feel ade is a handful that can cause a lot of problems for defenders, partnered with a reasonably decent goal return, and to be honest i think our current defense will struggle handling adebayor next season. i also feel arsenal will struggle to find a tried and tested replacement of similar quality.
Matthew Wade has got it bang on why people are tired of ade, it has nothing to do with his african roots.
“Ade was far more popular when he was less successful, but worked his nuts off. In 07/08 much of his success was due to a mixture of physicality, workrate and skill. Last season the workrate was only there sporadically and this affected his performance levels and combined with angling for a move, lost him the affection of the fans.”
(ps. i did mention ryan giggs did i not?)
you did mention Giggs therefore I was just supporting your argument, although I feel I countered your Gerrard loyalty issue.
Matt has raised some interesting points on Ade but the fans were fully behind him that season. Contract negotiation, careless outbursts, an unscrupulous agent has destroyed Ade’s rep to most fans therefore they just couldnt bare to support one of their own players. Ade has said it himself that the fans treatment of him affected his performance therefore he just couldnt reach the same levels as the previous season under the hostile atmosphere.
Interesting debate that will drag on and on. I feel we will only truly realise Ade’s worth when he leave.
Apologies regarding the general arsenal fans comment. Flippant 🙂
Eboue – Cult hero… that was the quote of the day
@Thegame
Get your facts right before putting your tinted glasses on.What do you mean by saying that he doesnt get the respect from the fans.FFS,not even an insane person would compare himself to the legend TH14,and that he wanted equivalent wages.WTF?He is behaving like a mercenary of the highest order. And about his 30 goal season, other strikers in the class of Fernando Torres would have scored 50 goals, considering the chances Adebayor spurned. He doesnt know how to keep his mouth shut. Now,fuck off up north and rot in the Arab bench before you become a forgotten story, you Greedybayor.
Next in line Senderos and Eboue…………………..you are the weakest link……..goodbye and good riddance.
WTF is going on here with this race issue?Come on,Adebayor is not being targetted because of his race. Its only because he opens his stupid trap only to make him a fucking fool infront of the fan.Kolo Toure, despite trying to engineer a move away,is still a legend among the fans.So your point smacks of either ignorance or bias.
game. thanks. i’ll drink to that. it’s one that will go on and on and has raised much feeling and opinion across the board. at least it gives us something to talk about during this boring pre season spell. cheers all
Well put, gh. Personally, have disliked Ade from the day he arrived — felt he was a divisively self-centred presence — so I felt he had to go. One problem that Arsene must address in replacing him, though, is his height. We have so few big, aggressive types. If we are going to build the team around a set of Midfield Miniatures, then we need at least 3 tall types on the pitch to protect ourselves in the box. Ade served that purpose in addition to anything else he did.
Good riddance. Step up Simpson!!
The lazy fuck didn’t show respect to the jersey or the fans. Perfect club for the money grabbing mercenary.
I still love the Ade of 2007 08 – the guy who was a constant thorn for the scum, the guy who used to work his socks off every match – but he’s not the guy who turned up last season. and I dont like him now.
ade arrived at the Arsenal with a reputation for being a disruptive influence with monaco and his national team.Like many players/agents today most of what players/agents think/do is played out in front of the media .ade was his own enemy he made comments in the media which did not put him in a good light and questioned his loyalty to the club and fans.Last close season was his downfall ,once a player who was very much valued as a 30 goal striker is now lazy stupid useless etc etc oh well lets hope he does better somewhere else…………..and the money will come in handy Arsenal will only sell if it suits .
Blimey, it’s busy here!
I’ll just have a non-alcoholic drink again today, ‘holic.
Cheers.
Agree with ‘Holic… sad to see the Ade of yesteryear go, but not all that chuffed to see the current incarnation go out the door, particularly at that price.
Sickening… there’s a story out there today that Ol’ Harry is trying to lure a disenchanted Flamini to play for Spuds.
Next up, a brochure for Diaby and Silvestre.
Totallly agree with Holic, we will miss the old Ade but with the reputation he’s been building for himself between his antics with the Togo team and his last season for us, we are very lucky to get 25 mils. Milan, Barca and other big clubs know better, none have even only made an approach. If it wasn’t for the loaded sheikhs we would be stuck with him (although pehaps that would have remotivated him to try to improve his value)
That being said it’s hard to blame him for trying to earn more. Let’s be honest it’s not like the love from most supporters would make him think twice about leaving the club.
Now the bets are open:
1) Will he be replaced?
2) If yes, by whom?
My money is on no, we won’t buy a striker. Firstly because we are cash-strapped and these are tough times for football clubs (Madrid and Citeh are the exception, not the rule. AC Milan is offloading players, United got Valencia and Owen to replace Ronaldo and Tevez and Ferguson said that was it for the summer…)
Then because we bought Arshavin in that position and we have 5 strikers (VP, Eduardo, Arshavin, Bendtner and Vela) and 2 wannabes (Walcott and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas). And finally because for all the noise about potential targets, you know than when the “deal” for Chamakh is put on hold because Bordeaux wants Silvestre it just means that the club will use any excuse not to buy anyone. We have 3 LB (Clichy, Gibbs, Traore) and 5 central defenders (Vermaelen, Toure, Djourou, Gallas and Senderos) with Silvestre ranking low on the pecking order for these 2 positions, we have no use for him next season it would only be fair to let him go to Bordeaux.
Anyway I could be wrong. My predictive skills are known to suck until after a few glasses.
Have a drink, Matt. You know as much as anyone in truth.
Of course we will miss the old Adebayor and if he`d just scored another 30 goals, I would forgive him just about anything, but I can`t help thinking we`ve seen the best of him. It`s unfortunate that we couldn`t sell him to Milan, but we must hope that he shows his true character at Eastlands.
Chamakh is the player who would appear almost certain to sign, except, if the story in one paper is to be believed, the deal has already collapsed as Bordeaux want Silvestre in part exchange, something AW won`t do as he wants to kep hold of him. The article goes on to say that AW will now turn to his 2nd. choice Huntelaar, even though he would cost 3 times as much. Believe THAT if you will!
I’d take the Ade from the 2006/07.
Remember Portsmouth at home, 2-0 down and Ade came off the bench and his enthusiasm contributed to the 2 goal comeback.
Thanks `Holic, unfortunately for all of us the management is rationing my alcool intake since after quitting smoking a few months ago I’ve had a tendency to compensate rather freely 😉
Breaking news. Adebayor has just been granted a work permit. Having attended the vast majority of the games he played in, I am assuming that is something that he did not have last season?
A quality player for one season. The club will be better off without him. No surprise that the deal is being held up because of his excessive wage demands. Tells you all you need to know about the man.
Guys, an interested article I came across regarding AW reasons for why Ade went / had to leave. Quiet similar to my assumptions above.

Apologies for trying to revive a dead horse.
