Big Phil Back To 'Pound' The Baggies?
Sep 21st, 2009 by 'holic
A check in all the usual places reveals there is little chance of a stream of the Carling Cup match with West Brom appearing, which probably means a rare return to the ‘bad old days’ of ATVo audio commentary for those unable to get to the Grove.
That’s a shame because this looks like being a really interesting clash. The Baggies were extremely impressive in their five goal showing at Middlesbrough on Saturday, and on their brief stay in the top flight last term they held the first team to a single goal triumph on the opening day of the season.
We already know eight of the names pencilled in for an appearance in red. They may not all start, but Arsene Wenger has revealed we can expect to see Szczesny, Senderos, Silvestre, Gibbs, Ramsey, Wilshire, Vela, and Traore. No real surprises there, and one would imagine that Gilbert, Randall, and Coquelin could complete the starting line-up if they are all fit.
That leaves room on the bench for the likes of Bartley, Deacon, Watt, and Barazite. Personally I would love to see the latter get twenty minutes if circumstances allow. The young Dutchman gave us a glimpse of his ability in pre-season at Barnet, and remains an exciting member of the reserve team.
Those looking for an omen will cling to the memory of the two clubs last meeting in this competition, when two goals by Jeremie Aliadiere clinched victory at the Hawthorns on the way to the 2006/7 Final. I have a feeling this game will be a lot closer than that one.
The ‘holic pound is always an even wilder stab in the dark for these games than usual, so how about Phil Senderos to score anytime, 9/1 with Paddy Power. There is no doubt he will be a threat from set pieces, and there are likely to be a fair few of those around I would imagine. Get on it!
Have a great night, all of you who are lucky enough to be going. Good luck with the radio commentary the rest of us! Cheers ‘holics.

Best have a port tonight, ‘holic. Ta.
Damn those puns! 😉
I’ll drink with Fin tonight.
We’ve already done the ‘Can you recommend a good port?’ gag, haven’t we, Fin?
You’ll be needing the stilton and crackers to go with that I assume?
I think there are plenty of crackers to go around.
Just a bottle of bland lager for me please, ‘holic.
Evening Ollie and Snail.
Get on Phil. You heard it here first 😉
Indeed we have ‘holic. Cheese & biccies would be welcome.
Looking forward to tomorrow, I enjoy the Carling Cup.
Whole game is being shown ‘as live’ from 10pm tomorrow on ATVO, if anyone cares/didn’t know already…
Thanks Dos.

I would have thought there was a better chance of Wilshere scoring. I guess the ‘holic pound has a fancy for long shots. Shame about the stream, will be difficult to avoid the score and watch “as live”.
Can I have my early morning cuppa please 😛
An Orange juice’ll do me just fine thanks ‘holic – my liver has called for a brief respite.
We are stronger than West Brom and our ‘youngsters’ should have enough in the engine to overcome (a) the opposition’s willingness to play football as well as (b) their renewed confidence from the weekend’s result.
3-1 goes Arsenals way. Wilshere and Vela (2) on the scoresheet.
Keep the faith 🙂
Does 9-1 include own goals?
No Pip 🙁
Still time though.
