Many Happy Returns, Monsieur Wenger
Oct 22nd, 2009 by 'holic
Sixty today. Happy birthday boss. I did think about sending a card but there didn’t seem a lot of point given the lack of working postmen for the next couple of days.
I have to chuckle when I hear some talk of what will be in store for Arsene tonight. There are people who work very close to the man who will tell you they don’t have a clue what he gets up to away from the training ground. Whatever he has in store, and whether or not it involves a night in front of the television watching the Europa League, or a more likely family-based celebration, I hope he thoroughly enjoys it, and the year of enormous promise that stretches out ahead of him.
AGM
Le Boss’ mood may be improved if the Annual General Meeting today is a little better stage-managed than last year’s fiasco. I suspect a change of atmosphere and approach from those charged with running proceedings.
A little more CEO and a little less Chairman would be in order. Not, you understand because I have anything against Peter Hill-Wood, but because he has become an easy target for anyone with an axe to grind on such occasions. I’m sure the pre-meeting organisation will have been thorough this time around.
It is, after all, a very poor organisation that goes into an AGM not knowing exactly what the outcome will be.

For those that are going to this a.g.m tonight, don’t go there thinking everything is all rosey again because we have scored alot of goals because it’s not,the defence is a shambles and will not win us anything again unless they improve dramatically in that area.
Sub-focus you’re aware that with 4 goals shipped in 4 games only 3 teams have a better record than us? It’s away that we sin…
Happy Birthday Monsieur Wenger.. May u always stay strong & healthy..hopefully this season will bring something for us gooners to be proud of..it’s time to deliver Arsenal!!!
Happy Birthday Arsene!!
I’ll have a Pinot Noir out of respect for the boss if you please.
Hey sub-focus, I agree we’re still a bit shaky on set plays, but we’ve only shipped 11 compared to Chelsea’s 8 and United’s 9. Not exactly “a shambles” is it?
Anyhow, thanks for everything ‘holic!
And 4 of them were at Citeh… Which was a freak game anyway.
Happy Birthday Arsene.
I’ll have a cheeky nip of Andresen white port on the way to work – it is chilly out afterall!
Glass of Alsace Riesling VT to honour our sweet Alsatian, please…
Many, many happy returns.
Also, must say it is a great honour, the Key of the City of London. He deserves it. Too bad he can’t be knighted: Sir Arsene Wenger sounds so much better…
Happy Birthday Arsene!! I hope you have the strength to stay in charge for another 13 years. I think the future looks promising, if it doesnt happen this season it definately will happen the next. Keep the faith gooners, and cheers holic for the best Arsenal-blog around!!
It’s odd considering I’ve never met the man. I’ve only ever seen in him public a handful of times, back in the days when my dad could afford to take me to Highbury. What is odd is the genuine passion I feel for Arsene Wenger — at times I feel more passion for the man than I do some of my friends and family! (Of course not the select few I love the most.)
He has been there since I was a young’n. When I started supporting the club, Stewart Housten was in charge and we were disgraced and all but my dying grandad were a family of Spuddos (my dad a Millwall fan luckily stayed out of it.) Once my grandad died, I vowed to support the gooners in spite of peer pressure and claimed that the future would bring great things for the club just to embarrass my Yid family for mocking my choice! Oh, how I couldn’t have predicted how successful we’d be, taunting Spurs at every chance! I even made a bet every season with my uncle Steve, the main Spud in the family, that Arsenal would finish above Spurs in the table for a tenner (which seemed like a hell of a lot of money to me) every year until the Invincibles, in which now he just sends me a tenner at the start of every season! Arsene Wenger made that dorky little kid a few bob and gave him eternal bragging rights.
But also he has had a personal effect on me. I have taken notice of the ‘think before you speak’ way that I wish so many more gooners would take in. His nutritionists methods have been an influence on me going vegetarian and soon to be vegan – he has proved that healthy eating (combined w/ regular exercise – but then they are professional atheletes) can work wonders on fitness and etc. And I am sure there are many other ways he has effected me, even before you add in the giant smile painted on my chops when we play.
Happy Birthday Arsene. When the job market stops being so horrible, I get employed, can find somewhere cheap to live and I can save up for the occasional game, I will sing your name as loudly as my dainty throat will allow.
Bonne Anniversaire M. Le Boss,
Personally speaking Arsenal and I go back 43 years, and you young’uns don’t even know you are born. Keep the faith and give the man time…. yes, even more time. You won’t know what you have till he’s gone!
Glenmorangie please
Glenmorangie? 40+ tastes too! I’ll have a blue WKD, but only because I need to top up my screen wash! It’s true though, 99% of clubs in the UK would be happy for just one tenth of what Arsene has brought for us. We would be potty to forget that.
Dinner out for the ‘holic tonight so the West ham preview will be some time on Saturday. Have a great weekend all. I’ll leave the bar open and put the honesty box out 🙂
If you’ve not listened to AW’s interview on the BBC yet, it’s really worth it. The man is truly fascinating. Here’s the link:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8021267.stm
Also interesting is D. Dein’s interview bit. He really does speak highly of AW, you can’t detect any hint of acrimony. What a shame DD lost faith in the project and felt he had to sell his share to the worst possible candidate…
Blimey Sameul #9….read your very honest synopsis and couldn’t help but feel that we as fans are probably unique in collectively sharing non too dissimilar feelings about our manager and what he has done for Arsenal. He is a true gentleman, unseen before now in football. Even the smug Mancs cannot make that claim.
On Thursday evening I listened to the Radio 5 Live show dedicated to Arsene Wenger, presented by Eleanor Oldroyd (who I believe is a monster gooner). It is very much worth a listen….very good!!
On reaching this milestone age, I wish you heartfelt congratulations Monsieur Wenger! I truly hope that sometime over the course of this season, you can lift some silverware in true celebratory style for Arsenal Football Club and YOU.
15 year old Balvenie please barman with a couple of ice cubes.
Good health 🙂
