Starting Line-Up Against Citeh?
Apr 22nd, 2010 by 'holic
The preview of the Citeh game will be tomorrow night, but I can save myself some time, and a couple of paragraphs, by picking the likely starting eleven for the Gunners tonight.
The official website brings us the news that early hopes for a return by Andrey Arshavin are not to be rewarded, and only Alex Song appears to be a possibility to supplement the squad that failed to perform at Wigan. Please let him get through his fitness test. At least then we can reasonably expect two or three changes to last Sunday’s starting line-up.
I would be very surprised if Robin van Persie did not get a start up front, and I would expect Nicklas Bendtner to move out to the flank and Tomas Rosicky to drop to the bench to accommodate him. The other option which I think may be taken would be Emmanuel Eboue on the right, and Theo Walcott joining Rosicky on the bench. Eboue and Bacary Sagna could work the flank without leaving a gap for Bellamy to exploit.
The interesting selection puzzle is what to do with the returning Song. It’s a no-brainer for me. Get him alongside Sol Campbell at the back. However, I think we know that Arsene will go with his experienced central defensive duo and restore Song to the holding role at the expense of Craig Eastmond.
To me, that would be a shame. I understand the pressure that would be on the youngster on Saturday, but he was far from the worst performer at the DW stadium, and the prospect of Silvestre attempting to muzzle the threat of Carlos Tevez, and cover Gael Clichy in his tussle with the son of Wright Wright Wright, is just too horrible to anticipate.
Still the controversy rages about who should be between the sticks. Why do it to yourself? Manuel’s convenient wrist injury continues to rule him out and Arsene has already stated who will get to start more games this season. So let’s deal with it, but before I also implore you to get behind the young Pole I should also point out that apparently at Disneyland today, Mickey Mouse was spotted wearing a Lukasz Fabianski watch.
Cheap shot, I know. In all honesty we know he will be starting and that means we do have to give him some confidence boosting support by belting out his surname when the team is announced on Saturday. We need him to perform, so let’s help him in the only way we can.
And Arsene, please consider Song for Silvestre. Please?

Alright, ‘Holic I’m singing Fabianski’s name as I type out this post, and if you send me the words to the Polish national anthem I will sing those too. I’m all behind bringing in Song for Silvestre. We need Song to play games in defence to be sure he’s ready to move back there in a pinch. And we certainly don’t need to boost Silvestre’s confidence ahead of the juicy new contract we’re (I trust not) planning to give him. Come on Arsenal and Fabianski!
I still can’t get used to that ‘DW’ Stadium. I preferred the JJB.
Anyway, agree on the Song point.
Anything non alcoholic for me tonight.
Cheers!
Here’s an idea….attack like mad…we (almost) know we’ll concede a goal. 3-2 win with a penalty save by the Pole. He needs it for his confidence and so do we.
Playing Song at the back seems to be the most obvious idea to me also. Van Persie to start then?
Well said ‘n all ‘Holic.
Since I just wrote something at the end of your last blog post I’m just going to shamelessly copy it here, since I have nothing else to add at this point in time (‘IHNETAATPIT’, if you look it up in a dictionary will probably have the explanation “What Toby normally thinks when he reads something that ‘Holic wrote – but later somehow manages to post some crap anyways”)
Here goes:
CTRL-C, CTRL-V (or something about a Mac-button if you are that way inclined:
“Right, had a glass of wine (or five), and I just really had to come on to say that I love the Arsenal. What wonderful boys (and ladies!) we have, really, in amongst of all the crappy bits. Well done overall and bring on Man C. We’ll just win by a goal but we will bleeding win. Lovely fans we’ve got as well, at least the ones sharing a pint (or five) here.”
Eastmond cant start the rest of the team wont pass him the ball unless he is in acres of space
Will the season sink beneath Caribbean waves in a triangle off Bermuda, or will it rise like a phoenix from volcanic ash like Giza Pizza Pyramid? Is it still mathematically possible? Will this game be a trigonometric classic requiring Pythagorean tactics? Will AW be squared the anguish or is Mancini more hypoten-used to defeat? It’s not a trichotomy for me, I can see it from all angles and I’m equilateral on the outcome, Isoceles, my Greek friend.
It’s Diana and the trio of Detroit spinners who were quite Supreme and, like the Gunners, Keep Me Hanging On. It’s the little pigs oinking on their way to market, like Old Purple Nose to the press, “oink, oink, oink”. It’s Lithium’s atomic number and, to be Kurt, Nevermind if that’s Nirvana for me. It’s the Wise Men, ‘Holic, Arthur and Steve T (who’s In Utero, trying to figure this out). It’s Matt the Musketeer, back fresh from vacation with his trusty side-kicks Chicago and Draped.
It’s Goldilocks Sagna and the leaky squabbling bears from France. It’s the Triumvirate of Triumph, Cesc, Song and Denilson, broken, busted and beleaguered. It’s the Triad of Talent, Ramsey, Gibbs and Djourou , down, damaged and disappeared. It’s the lucky prime, it’s the steps and edges on Arshavin’s haircut, it’s 3 three-pence in a fountain of despair, 3 games to go as the Gunners struggle for 3rd in the last 3 furlongs of a 3 legged, 3 horse race, with Horseface Hawwy coming up on the rails for a fine prime view of Arsene’s Arse. (Faaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrt!)
It’s the return of The Entertainer. The Togolese Express of great goal scoring success. The man who can score, with his head, with his feet, and with both simultaneously. Who set goals up for Robin and scored them for Cesc. Who can dance like Denilson, make me smile, and the BBB seethe. He’s not 5 foot 4, he’s MUCH bigger than that, and so is his heart and his Gooner Goal tally. I’ll be glued to my screen to see him, once more, grace the green, green grass of home, Delilah. It’s Not Unusual to expect some fireworks in Stereophonic from our Local Boy with the Same Size Feet.
City’s Triple trio threat of Ade, Teves and Bellamy will be tough for Sagna, Sol and Silvester to master. If Wright-Philips takes on Clichy, I expect Gael, the weakest link, will be in spin-triplicate and the crosses to fly frequently from the right.
To win it we’ll need Song and Denilson (Diaby PLAYS with these two beside him to hold and feed), Theo, Nasri and Robin up front. We don’t have another mid-field combination strong enough to counter City’s. (Although Eboue for Theo and 4-4-2, with Robin and Bendy up front, might also work). Eduardo and Rosicky off the bench please, Monsieur Wenger.
The dice say 2 and 1 or 1 and 2, I’m hoping for 4-3 to The Arsenal with Ade scoring all three for City. Imagine if he’d been playing for us in the Manure and Chelski games this season. Different outcome, in all four, Gooners. Not a shadow of a doubt in my mind.
Come on you Gunners! A Corona with a double Kolo is the Holo please, barman.

Oi, Her Nellieness, have you been playing with my apple?? Looks like it.
Evening ‘Hols. I hear you on the Fabianski issue, I really do.
But what would happen to any one of us in our repective trades if we continually made elementary cock-ups? We would more than likely be out on our arse. Unless of course we played for the Spuds – Heh!
But seriously, I have just read a snippet from tonights *whispers* Evening Standard. It’s about our ‘loan star’ Szczesny. The boy is playing a blinder week in week out. I know we can’t bring him back? But he’s gotta be the future.
I hope Fabianski plays a blinder and proves me wrong, I really do. But even the ‘Holic Pound’ won’t be put on a clean sheet!
I would not trust silvestre either and am afraid of what will happen if he is faced with tevez and adebayor. We have to depend on the present players as the first choice ones are out. Lets hope that the team pull together and win the match.
Her Nellieness and Bergkamp the Man seem well matched I must say, at least judging by their prose.
See I proved my own point – that should be ‘respective’ not repective – you fucking retard ’74 – You’re fired!!
I think AW will go back to 4-4-2 now
Fabianski
Sagna – Campbell – Silvestre – Clichy
Walcott – Song – Nasri – Diaby
Van P – Bendtner
Thats the team I think AW gonna pick. If he does 4-4-3 it’ll be:
Fabianski
Sagna – Campbell – Silvestre – Clichy
Song – Nasri – Diaby
Walcott – Bendtner – Van P
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm! I THINK its gonna be 2-1 city
OMG, Slivestre , Please don’t, I would not trust silvestre either and am afraid of what will happen if he is faced with tevez and adebayor.
IF Silvestre is playing ,Arsenal is in danger…OH NO!!
In Utero BTM? I’m in my lounge if you must know. And now using a pen name? Top drawer i must say.
For some perverse reason i actually want both song and silvestre to play. One of the big defensive problems for us this season has been the massive gap left between the back 4 and the midfield. I would prefer to see the 2 old stagers with song in the holding role. Van Persie up front and bendtner out wide makes sense to me.
A pint of Imodium please barman. With fabianski in goal i might just need it.
Keep the faith.
I agree with ’74 wholeheartedly- about Szczesny. I can’t vouch if you deserve your own bitter self-hatred, but I highly doubt it my friend! 😉
Quick pint of Guinness, and back to work!
Oh, and ‘Holic, great point about Song. He’s clearly our best central midfielder not injured right now. Number 1. And he and Sol complement each other quite nicely. Alas, all for not, I’m sure.
RVP has to play. He owes a boot to the face of adebayor. I don’t just want to beat this team, I want to leave them in waste. This win is about pride! Its about shoving it in Ade and Kolo’s face for leaving for a shit team just for money! Fuck these Fuckers! Van P to score a hat trick and The Arsenal to win 3-1.
If I have to see both Silvestre and Fabianski in the starting lineup again, I’m going to throw a fit, soon to be followed by a berserk.
If there’s anything Arsenal’s defence has proven the last month or so, it’s that we really have only got one Song.
I want this one. I loathe Adebayor, and Bellamy. Give Vieira and Toure the ovations they deserve, but as for the rest of them, let’s rip these social-climbing bastards to shreds.
Don’t forget Sylvinho, Uncle Mike. Three big cheers for them before we rip into the coach tripper.
Tim, considering we’ll have Silvestre and Fabianski leaking goals at the back it will probably be necessary for us to outscore them if we can. But we have scored more than one goal only once in our last five league games. Mind you, Van Persie started none of those games and our only goal against Spurs was scored with him on the pitch. In view of all this, I’d say our best chance to win is 2-1 with Robin scoring at least once, but if I were a betting man I would say 2-2 is a more likely result with these goalscorers: Ade, Tevez, Van Persie, Bendtner.
Theeo Theeo Theeo
Kamaaaan the Arsenal!!

English version:
Poland has not perished yet

That which alien force has seized
We at sabrepoint shall retrieve
March, march, D?browski
From Italy to Poland
Under thy command
Let us now rejoin the nation
Anyway,
Evening Holic’ and Holics
Good teaser post Holic, the thought of Song in the CB role gives a better chance at stopping Tevez for sure and Eastomond had a decent game at Wigan he run out of steam but the boy played with heart, never stopped running.
RVP should definitely start without any questions asked and Bendtner on the rightright flank, I wouldn’t mind Rosicky on the left or Eboue. Walcott defintely a super sub this time around.
And please, please Fabianski sort it out and make me a proud Pole!
Not sure if everyone has seen the interview with Szczesny on You Tube I posted in the last article so here it goes again, top top keeper in the making! He is certainly making the headlines.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOY63kPwFYo&feature=player_embedded
You do wonder about Almunia’s injury, seems rather convenient excuse to drop him and look at Fabianski. I am with you ‘holic on supporting the guy (flappy) but in all honesty I have little faith in a keeper who continuously chucks one in the net every game. I liked him a lot early doors but I question his mentally, I think we’ve another Manninger on our hands. Looked good to begin with but has proven error prone and mentally fragile. There’s no point in my mind in keeping him as number 2. Either sell him or loan him out, sat on the bench at 25 is not doing him any favours. Perhaps this would (a loan move) afford a closer look at Szczesny as number 2.
I would prefer we sold Almunia and loaned/sold Fabainski. That would mean buying a first choice keeper, I think making Szczesny number one is too big a risk and you would then scratch your head to what to do for cover behind him. My solution keeper front would be 1. New keeper, 2. Szczesny, 3. Mannone.
Arthur, you are most obliging. Now we just replace D?browski with Fabianski and the result: 60,000 singing the Polish national anthem and Fabianski making the winning penalty save. Too much of a reach?
Holic looks I have not closed my bold tag properly at #23 can you please kindly correct it for me?
Thank you…
behind the 8 ball but not nasri
You never know, I tell you that. Lets hope it doesn’t go to that my heart has been put through a lot this season already.
It’s perfect, Arthur 😉
Almunia, Lehmann, Seaman, Lukic, Jennings, Rimmer,
Is it correct of me to say that the last goalkeeper we played often (40+ appearances) who really started his playing career with Arsenal would be Bob Wilson (although I think he came from Wolves). Has it been that long since a home grown GK was our regular between the sticks?
I must be missing some since Wilson….does that cover it?
Don’t think Manninger played 50…Richard Wright didn’t (remember him having too many dodgy games…remember how excited we were about him)….who was between Jennings and Lukic?? Nobody I’m guessing…didn’t Lukic come in when big Pat finally stopped playing.
umm guys i think use are forgeting the fact that dj oru might be a poss and also gibbs so to me if there all fit this is the squad id like to see
mannoe
sagna campell dj clichy
nasri song rosicky
walcott v persie
bendtner
I prefers mannone in the pole, campbell and song at CB.while diaby plays DMF. eboue 4 walcott, van persie and B54 up-front. using a 4-1-3-2 formation. mannone sagna-campbell-song-clichy diaby eboue-nasri-rosicky van persie-bendtner. gunners till rapture.
Why is it OK to slag off Silvestre but not Fabianski? Silvestre hasn’t been nearly as costly when he’s played, he’s not as bad as people think. Who scored the second against Wigan again?
W
silvestre at d back or eastmond as dm is a gamble but i bliv arsenal wil overcome,al we nid is work as a team nd wenger shud try mannone
I would like to get Sagna to be CB, Eboue to be RB, as least Sagna is quick and better with man mark. If Song back, still want him to be DM, because he is the best in that position.
Mannone
Eboue-Sagna-Campbell-Clichy
Rosicky-Diaby-Song-Nasri
RVP-Bendtner
Bring Walcott in at 60 or 70 min, he has better impact when subtituted.
Yes pick Song if he is fit as he is about the most consistent player this season. Why pick Fabianski….Fumbleski. With him in goal there is no confidence at the back. I would rather have Mannone in goal. He was outstanding in the game against Fulham early of the season!
@ Donald. And right there is one of the biggest problems- confidence. My concern is not just that he might blunder a goal (I hope there aren’t any left in him this season) but that he doesn’t inspire any confidence. And I think we all have enough experience to know that Being confident in your keeper is the base of any team. Too many times this season I’ve watched not just the crap goal get scored against us, but the agony on all the players faces when they know they might work hard for 80 minutes to build a goal, just to watch it disappear in an instant of insanity. Confidence is difficult to muster in chaos, even if you are paid well.
Oh well. That’s my interest in Szczensny (shit, that can’t be right)- he just seems to be putting in the CONSISTENT performances that bring confidence and fire back to a side.
If Wenger gives credit only to performance then surely Eastmond needs a place in the team.. but knowing Wenger he prefers reputations.
I still feel Fabianski can become a good keeper. He is still very young for a keeper and as far as I am concerned his biggest positive is his firm decision making. If he makes a decision he sticks by it. Not that all his decisions come off, but at least he makes a decision..
Instead of eternally being in two minds like Almunia. I cant see us buying two goal keepers in summer – so Im guessing Lukasz will stay. At least Im hoping he does.
Hey Holic,
Haven’t gone anywhere, I was here the whole time just didn’t write anything cause I was absolutely shattered after the Wigan game and the final nail in our title bid coffin so I couldn’t write anything
(I genuinely believed we’d win it, now I’m really hoping for 2 Chelsea victories so that my mind will not go crazy so that even if we had won all our games we wouldn’t win it, that would make it a whole lot more barrable)…
As for City, I actually prefer Song in the middle and not in the back even though Silvestre is awful, it’s just that the middle is so breached with anyone but Song there. I also hope Diaby comes back to form cause ever since the Barca at home game he’s been really off and he’s as I said one of our best players in the squad.
Just wondering how many of the Szcezxcny advocates have even seen him play let alone are able to spell his name. I guess he has the advantage of being the non-Almunia non-Fabianski.
actually the stadium should boo him when his name is called…at least make wenger aware that we have a disaster at hand…open his eyes for Christ’s sake…
whoever plays in goal doesnt matter – we know hes gonna fuck it up!
sack the goalie coach – get jens back to do he job!
We lost the league because of gk errors – simple as that!
A glass of your finest akinfeev please barman!!!!
Amit – booing your own players is the mark of a complete moron, I don’t want a repeat of the Eboue business thanks.
amit
You are walking on thin ice here my friend, ok I agree with you he hasn’t been good enough this season but to boo your own player is a disgrace and you for all people should be ashamed even thinking about it.
kevnal
We lost the league because of gk errors – simple as that! ?
What about defenders and midfielders to blame for the first and third goal at Wigan?
I’m sorry but if you haven’t noticed we were playing without 5 main players towards the end of the season. When you play Gallas, Verminator, Cesc, Van Persie and Arshavin you get a different picture altogether.
The booing business is a no-no. Save your venom for the coach tripper.
Yes chaps, booing is a no-no. Pure and simple. Counter-productive. Ironic cheering – now that’s a different ball game. It can even act as a vent and is a very subtle way of letting a player know that we know he needs to do much better.
So cheer your hearts out for the Polish stopper this weekend. Every save, every kick, catch. He will get the message that he needs to up his game.
@behind the 8 ball: I can spell Szczesny!
I can’t tell wether he could be our number one for next season, though. But there is no doubt about the fact that he is massively talented.
amit – no booing to the team please. if you really need to do it anyways, then i suggest that you vent it out on someone else… like…um… adebayor?
“he’s six-foot four, he’s six-foot four,
we got nicklas bendtner, f**k adebayoooooooor”
Such a shame that the big pole in our goal dosent seem to have the mentality for a big club as the boys certainly got the shot stopping ability to make you look on in awe,
If a Keepers made a better save in the last 5 years than the one Flappy made in the Carling cup from Zaki ive yet to see it,He also made a great save in the Wigan game low down to his right but because he made it look so easy and comfortable it wasnt really commented on,
I was hoping this run he would get in the side to the end of the season would show him in favourable terms after the Fuck ups previous and the lowest point at Porto but it seems his head just cannot coope with it which is a true shame as all the talk that comes out of the club is that hes un real in training and he has all the attributes to be a great, Sometimes thats just the way it is tho and ill beat my bottom dollar he will have a good carear away from The very top of the proffesion,
Weve got ourselves in a right muddle mind in that department As Almunia clearly is not quite good enough Flappy isnt mentality right and Mannone is another disaster waiting to happen those that say he had a great game at fulham i wouldnt argue with but the next couple of performances were pretty poor and remmeber this is a kid that went on loan to Barnsley and after a few absolute Howlers was sent back early !!
Anyways Onwards and Upwards and lets give that Whore what he deserves !!
You’re right NBT8B, I’m sure many of us haven’t seen Scczwwnuyeyeyeyeey play, but the clips are at least an impressive start (I know that editing can be persuasive). What impresses me more about him is that he seems very calm, confident and determined. Also – he has a presence about him physically and mentally that bodes well for the future.
Like Corny, I would buy a new keeper for next year but have the youngster in as number 2. We could have a real good ‘un in the making..
I enjoy reading this blog and the drinks make for fun and educative reading. Will Disagree with you on one thing. Young Eastmond must not start this game facing De Jong, Vieira and Barry. We need to win the midfield battle to get something from this game. So I would prefer that Diaby anchors and Nasri and Rosicky line alongside him, RVP and Bendtner should start and will leave the other pick upfront to Wenger
I’ll be happy with a competent performance and no lacklustre repeat.
Hopefully RVP will get a full game and I would like to see Eastmond retain his place on merit.
Not sure that I’m too bothered by Andrei just failing to find fitness, compared to last season he has been fairly woeful, I appreciate his injury had some part to play but his application has been lacking anyway.
Long as we do not capitulate I’ll be happy enough.
Today marks the 30th anniversary since we beat Juve on their own patch with Paul vaessen scoring the winning goal.
Aware that Paul V tragically died at the age of 39 in 2001, I came across the following article that describes his journey through life since scoring that goal and the tragic circumstances in which he died.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2002/mar/17/sport.comment
I think it an appropriate time to think of Paul V on this day and what could have been.
Neasden Gooner
That story sent shivers down my spine, it’s a terrible thing to happen. His premature end to his career ended his life too, it was different in those days I suppose. I don’t think the club was to blame, he seemed to have lost all his friends and family, either way it’s a massive waste of life.
@40
Booing Fabianski? What are you thinking??
He hasn’t thrilled me this season but think about his confidence levels….being an Arsenal fan means cheering his name at the start, and hopefully after every decent save he makes. Until further notice he’s in goal so get behind him.
Man City….to think I once had a marginal soft spot for that club, they’ve really become a reality TV type of millionaire misfits now. If you ever wanted a team to release some spittle upon it would be that lot, save your fire for the light blue shirts this weekend.
@ Goonerholic
I’m a bit worried about tomorrow’s game against Man City. The thought of Silvestre trying to stop the threat of Adebayor woories me immensely.
We simply have to win in order to secure third spot in the league, which for me would be a great achievement, considering the amount of injuries we have suffered this season and the fact that we maintained a title challenge until the 35th league game speaks great volumes of the squad, which Wenger has put in place.
Im a bit more worried that VP will be out for revenge and go straight thro the Whore in the first couple of minutes and get himself sent of as much as i Love RVP hes got that nasty streak you need but if he does anything silly hopefully we will be 3 up at the time, And then id love to see him give it to that complete and utter Cunt !!!
Boo Lukasz? Over my dead body!
Boos are reserved for Adebayor.. But coming to think about it, that isnt a great idea either. It might spur him on and the last thing we want is a motivated Adebayor.
@ Chippy 55
I agree with all of that!
Catalan,
Im not one for Violence, but when it comes to that togo twat i really really hope someone hits him and hits him hard tomorrow 🙂
He is right up there with the most egotistical twats to have ever worn our shirt,
A little story from a couple of years back regarding him lets just say he parked his car quite close to a certain well known pub when he was late for a game,
And as the story then goes went past said pub giving it the big i am only to be abused left right and centre by the people outside of the pub at which point he scurried of quick quickly tail firmly between legs !!!
Also seeem to recall his car needed a new paint job after that,,
Dont think he ever parked down that road again 🙂 probably best he dosent tomorrow either lol
Fabianksi’s decision making is SHIT. He can be a good shot-stopper, but then most any keeper can say that on their day. I’m absolutely kacking myself thinking about him even being on the field.
NEW GOALIES ASAP PLEASE ARSENE.
Great piece from gunnerblog today ahead of the City game:
http://gunnerblog.com/?p=2311
Terrifies me to think of Diaby, Fabianski and Silvestre facing Tevez, Bellamy and a highly motivated Ade.
I’m sure Campbell and Song will be working their arses off but will they get enuf help from the other players?
Anyone even thinking of booing a player that is priveleged to wear the cherished shirt on the field of play can fucking fuck off.
So there.
@ 40 amit
boos are definetly reserved tomorrow
for that c u next tuesday
who wont wear red and white ever again!
Now booze on the other hand will be gratefully received once weve
wiped the floor with our northern chums
manciteh
can i have a large glass of lloris and a slice of buffon please!
Oh oh, even marcus is terrified by the one an only, highly motivated, 20 goals a season for the Gunners, Emmanuel.
Is he delusional?
@Jim 60
Shit decision making? I dont think so. Its only because some of his decisions cost us matches that you think like that.
Almunia’s decision making is non-existent / worse but we havent noticed it that much sicne they were not high profile mistakes.
Fabianski is always sure of what he wants to do – whether its to come for a cross or to stay put for a corner. But unfortunately he gets shown up more often.
Im still willing to stick my neck out for Fabianski.
Btm, as much as we hate Ade, he is a handful on his day.
Gud bless al arsenal fans,,,,,,,4 blivin in our team, our coach les accept our mistake dis season by GOD gras next season wil surely b our year amen……
