Ghana March On, And Arsenal Are Luddites?
Jun 26th, 2010 by 'holic
Hello ‘holics,
Those of you who are in the UK know I picked a really good day to play some golf yesterday. Those who know what shape I was in when I got home will know I did not see Spain or Brazil march on with the weight of several ‘holic pounds on their shoulders.
Whilst I may have been incapacitated last night, I have watched both of the games today. Uruguay were worthy winners against South Korea, which was a shame in as much as I don’t get too many readers from Montevideo. I get a lot from America so I was hoping they would put up some sort of a performance against Ghana.
The tame surrender of the opening goal to Boateng didn’t bode well for them, but a spirited second-half performance, and the cool Donovan finish from the spot set up a proverbial nailbiting finish. It was Ghana, however, who reclaimed the initiative they had earned in the opening half, and the superb winner from Gyan was thoroughly deserved.
The winners of England’s group will, however, be returning home with their footballing reputation enhanced.
Oh Really?
With apologies to the text-speak generation!
As I was pretty much incommunicado yesterday, I fully expected to miss out on a raft on unexpected signings by Arsenal. Instead I am asked to believe that the most likely move, that of Laurent Koscielny, was held up because Arsene Wenger has left his Blackberry at home while he is in South Africa!
Forgive me, but that is laughable. Arsenal have a whole raft of people available to work on any documentation, and that will be well known to anybody connected with either the player, or his current club. They will all be fully aware of what is, or is not, acceptable to both Arsene and the club in relation to the proposed deal.
It is stretching the bounds of credibility that Arsene and the senior people at Highbury House do not have a means of sharing documents in this day and age. Are there really no computers in South Africa? Monsieur Laurent, the player’s ‘mister ten percent’ would be well advised to keep a low profile until the deal is sealed, and stop spouting complete nonsense.
Highbury Prints
Good looking print, don’t you think. Those who seek a memento of Highbury can get hold of one of these by going to http://www.arseprints.com/ and following the instructions there.
I’m not on an earner on these, but the seller is both a Gooner, and a friend, so I have declared my interest in the matter! Seriously, these limited editions would look really good covering that patch you can’t be bothered to fix on your wall. In fact I’m wondering if I could squeeze one in between my signed ’71 and ’89 shirts. Perhaps I should talk it through with the management first?
Have a great Sunday, ‘holics.

pretty cool memento………at least the usa ghana game wasnt bad…..boy u should be glad u missed brazil vs portugal!!HOLIC
Orange and orange win. So unfair 😉
Haven’t got much to say right now, just popped in for a quick pint before heading off to bead. Boddingtons for me, sir!
What a shame the US lost! Not that Ghana did not deserve their win but it would have done wonders for soccer here if the US had progressed to the quarter finals for the 4th WC in a row.
Oh well, at least Africans have a team in the last 8.
What a game from the Ghanaians! A drink to the Black Stars, if you would barman!
This is our time to shine, our time to fly,our time to be inside the sky.Our time to soar, our time to see,the last one in football…OH AFRICA!!

Nice one ‘holic, large red please. Not sure what the hold up is with cut and paste. I think he’s gonna be good though. I wonder if they having a sniff round Jagelka before they commit?
Sad to see US bow out 🙁
sign up the Ghana team..Annan, Jonathan, and Ayew
@Matt
As the last African team in the World Cup, I was glad that Ghana beat the US. Living in the US and having to put up with the typical one-sided commentary from the ESPN team is almost more than I can stand. The US played pretty well and shouldn’t be too disappointed that they didn’t make it further. I predict that England will be leaving the competition at the same stage.
And it appears you have forgotten that the US were eliminated in the 2006 World Cup at the group stage. You must remember Rosicky’s goal for the Czech Republic in their 3 – 0 win over the US. I believe Pavel Nedv?d also scored a cracking goal that game as well.
The Ghana win means more to the football loving nation and continent than the US, where the game is no where as important.
With regards to the Lorient thing, the club have changed the terms of the submitted offer to them weeks ago and are becoming increasingly more public over the negotiations which is not Wenger’s style. I would even hazard a guess that the deal might be dying.
Come on he’s at the WC and every agent is trying to get face time with him to offer their client to him. He is accessable to the right people. Arsenal are a big club that many footballers would love to play for and under his management.
@ marbellaron (yesterday)
don’t believe anything sourced by Pat Rice – he knows nothing – i heard he only got the job in the first place ‘cos Arsene thought his name was Patrice.
Had to be a fucking Spur who bollixed it up for us… but we deserved to lose. It’s about time the U.S. stopped playing (at least in the first half) as if we’re satisfied merely to get to the knockout stage, and play as if we remember the rule from football. The game we call football. The Herman Edwards Rule: “Hello? You play to win the game!” Ghana came to win, and if Essien had been available, they would’ve won in regulation 3-1. They were that strong, and we had no answer. We’re out, and we deserve it.
@Barry Webb: I stand totally corrected, it wasn’t in a row and would have been only the second time the US reached the quarter-finals. It could habe been the 4th time the US reached the last 16, nothing more.
That said as much as I hate sports nationalism, in a surprising way the US commentaries for the WC are not as bad (in this regard) as the English ones which add a layer of arrogance and condescendence to the mix.
And I too am glad Ghana won while playing very well, I just wished it wasn’t at the expense of the US, especially since the players played with a big heart in this WC and had 2 valid goals disallowed in two games. No complaints with the refs today. I’ll keep an eye on the ratings to see if this defeat has an impact.
I’ll definitively root for Ghana against Uruguay though.
It always seems to be the way the club and PR. Rarely do they get it right. No idea why. It should not be that hard really ? Let’s hope for some good news soon.
A cheeky Adnams if I may?
Surprising… I watched with American commentary and there was no bias whatsoever towards the US team.
The justification of holding this WC “for the whole of Africa” is questionable, but if nothing else it is good that at least one African nation has got through to the last 8.
Sad to see a half empty stadium for the Uruguay v S.Korea match.
According to today’s Daily Mole, Eduardo is being shown the door by Mr.Wenger, as he is not necessary to requirements with the arrival of Chamakh.I feel sorry for Eduardo, but he can thank his lucky stars that he still can walk, let alone play football, thanks to Gary lewin.IMO he is mentally shot, and sometimes one has to hard to be kind.
For now, a San Miguel will do. 😉
disapointing match today obviously from a US perspective. a few really good chances gone begging , especially from Altidore who looked crocked much of the match, and Feilhaber , who is a crafty little player, had one blocked close range by their keeper. awful decision to not start edu, and ricardo Clarks give a way was the reason for their first goal. also Bradley didnt seem as cool in posession today with 3 Ghanians around him all day. Demeritt didnt have as good of a day either but what can you do Ghana possessed very well for much of the match, but they did have a lot of antics of being stretchered off after no contact made me sick. forgive me, but this generation of players are turning football into a pussy sport and I do not like it one bit. in every game something very embarassing takes place. it must be stamped out .
The whole Laurent Koscielny thing says to me that Arsene is after someone else and has parked this deal until he knows whether his first choice will sign or not. The ‘missing blackberry’ is the weak kind of excuss given by someone palming off questions on lack of progress.
hello holic, this world cup summer football is good fun but i want my arsenal back now. fizzy water with lime for me please, some one needs to stay sober to get you lot home
You are not wrong there, dizzy.
Here’s to the designated drivers of the world. You are more appreciated than you think!
Good morning Holic & Holic`s
The Ghana V USA was a decent match to watch, but for me the extra time was spoiled by some blatant play acting from ghana that made me turn it off. I really hate that side of football now days.
The story that Arsene left his phone behind at home, sorry let me start again. The complete fiction and bullshit spouted by the agent is just how bad things are getting in the transfer market.
Can you imagine the amount of calls and texts Arsene must be getting from agents trying to get there greedy clients moves to better clubs. Arsene hasnt left his phone at home he just dosent want to speak to you. He made a bid for your client and it was turned down so stop calling and go back to bottom feeding like all agents.
The lack of Arsenal has turned me cold turkey and Im not very good being cut off like this, I may resort to training ants in the garden to play in the red and white and use a grain of sugar as a ball but just hope they dont eat the ball.
Anything you have really cold barman.
Only three weeks to Barnet, ’71. Hang on in there fella 😉
Alright
Some of the bollox found on sites such as Goal.com et al is laugable to say the least.
I only pay attention to Arsenal.com – but not the transfer section – and of course – Goonerholic
Keep up the good work!
Latest news _Eduardo is leaving AFC after just recently signing a contract extension LOL- tribalfootbalandgeneralshite.com
Morning ‘holic and all.
Apologies if you’ve already heard, but doesn’t the Wc remind you of WW2?
The French surrendered early, the US get in late (before last night’s try) and leave England to face the Germans.
At least that’s worth an IPA, please.
good luk, my england,
holic hope you recover from the sunstroke soon, your really struggling, but as always you can count on me to make up the numbers
Ghana won deservedly against the Us ,,,, so drinks are on me. Arsenal could do well with a Boateng , Annan (he’s a midge but way better than Denilson , very Makalele like) or K Asamoah in our ranks. Yes there is a Spurs link with Boateng but he never really played for them and anyone who F*cks up Ballack is ok by me.
Ingerland got what they deserve.Overrated bunch of yob will never get my support.Always nice to see the sad face of terry,Gerrard ans Cole after a lost.Germany send some hungry talented young lion .Never mind the three lion on england shirt what about 11 donkeys
gud 1 LG…..
I will be happpy as gunners fan if i see the best midfielder in africa in arsenal next year, the cousin of the former un secretary general kofi annan that midfielder in ghana anthony annan as essien is the best midfielder in africa, for me anthony annan is the best
Capello must take the can for this overall performance over 4 games. He made some strange subs during the latter part of the game, and it’s a sorry state that we couldn’t muster 23 half decent players to represent England.
Yes the PL is the best league in the world but the foreign influence has made it so.
Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a quick return to form in a few weeks when the top clubs go to promote themselves in places around the world far and wide.
