A Guest Preview To Feast On
Oct 29th, 2010 by 'holic
Those of you who regularly browse the ‘drinks’ will be familiar with the unique, and quite brilliant, work of Bergkamp the Man. At the end of this busiest of week’s for me I am delighted to report that he has taken time out from his significant anniversary celebrations to furnish us with his thoughts on the meeting with our friends from the East. Thank you BtM, and of course ‘her Nellieness’ for allowing him a few moments to help out a man in need!
It’s Number 10 but it’s not in Downing Street, there’s not a Cleggy or a Cammy anywhere in sight and the Brown stain is a distant memory never to be reincarnated as any ghost or ghoul of Halloween past. But will it be the ten of diamonds for the Gunners? Or is there some danger that Arsenal will be hammered purple and blue by the ten of clubs, a Green goalkeeper waged by Kieron Dyer and the rest of the East End Night Clubbers, as turnip lanterns twinkle, warlocks cast their spells and witches switches criss-cross the night sky?
The residents of Westhamma, the descendants of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, the one-time Thames Ironside FC have had their ham in the oven, their irons in the fire, for Arsenal over the past few seasons. Points that should have been golden for the Gunners have been banged on the anvil and forged to the basest of metals as the men from the east have raised the temperature to white hot and molten, to better their more illustrious neighbours, and steel the day.
Will it be a “Trick” of West Brom proportions or a “Treat” of the kind that slipped down so sweetly at Citeh last week? It’s Number 10 with 5 in the wins column, two in the drawn column and two defeats – both of which sting and one of which stinks. For sure, the West Brom loss and the missed penalty draw at Sunderland were five points cast into the wind of missed chances, into the chasm, between Islington and the Fulham Bust Stop, and into Holic’s Guinness to embitter its taste.
Irrecoverable? No way! We’ll be top by December 27 and that’s no empty chalice or false promise. But to get there, wins of this cinematic genre are a must to be seen. This can be no Hammer Horror. This must be an epic of Cecil B Demillian’ proportions and the points cannot be Gone With The Wind at the end of the day. Gibbsy must be the only English Patient listed when the titles role. “Move on Up” the only soundtrack as the wins column clicks up to 6.
Looking forward to seeing Fabi in goal is almost as unexpected as looking forward to jellied eels, cockles and whelks or a quiet night out with Ronnie and Reggie Kray. But looking forward to it I most certainly am. Kos will be back in the centre of the defence, but will Squill partner him or is Johann “Djourou” another chance?
There’s no doubt in my mind that the TTT will start. We purr with perfection when Cesc, Song and Deni take centre of the mid-field stage. And that leaves only three other berths. Chamakh and Nasri are “must plays”.
Will it be Russia’s finest haircut, Prague’s mellifluous music vendor, Young Mozart, or Master Walcott of England fame who will get the nod? The boss seems to favour the Bolshoi Buzzcut for his many assists and so I expect 5 minutes of effort, one assist and maybe even one shot on target from Andrei tomorrow.
The BtM crystal ball is predicting a home win and no joy for Some Mothers Do Avram, I grant you. A clean sheet for the well-polished pole, Denilson’s first of the season and a Spanish pasa double from Cesc all add up to a three nil home win. Anywhere close to the prediction and destination of the Holic pound?
Enjoy it Holics. I’m on the wrong side of the pond so I’ll see the game through a plasma lens tomorrow. My Ten Green Bottles are standing in a row. Their contents look tempting. Make that through a plasma lens and a beery haze then.
See Y’All tomorrow.
Brillant, BtM, and thanks again. Pop back in the morning ‘holics to see the prediction for the ‘holic pound.

Hey BtM I’ll read your post next.
Ooh, so close to being first… Pint of Boddingtons, please!
Excellent preview BtM, but no mention of the Brazilian dancing girls who I expect will go all out upon viewing Denilson’s first of the season. The Cesc double could be just the treaty trick to top the weekend, and if it happens I’ll be dancing a paso doble through a plasma lens in virtual coordination with you!
LOL a great piece of writing 🙂
Hooray for BtM! 🙂
I’ll have Fife’s most popular drinks to celebrate.
Whatever that may be 😉
Is anyone else watching ATVO in green and pink only, or is there something wrong with my box of tricks – Sky broadband btw ?

Seems they know there’s a problem – thought it was some sort of Halloween trick until it went on for 25 minutes !
BTM, yet another one perpetuating the anti-Arhsavin line I see.
Rosicky gives perspiration but Arshavin gives inspiration. Yes he’s lazy but so what? Look at the stats!
Sometimes you have to appreciate an artist for what he is. If we wanted someone to run around a lot and throw himself into pointless challenges we could have signed Joey Barton 😉
If on the other hand, Arsene drops him for Walcott, then that would be more understanding, but I think Theo as an impact sub with 20 minutes to go against tired legs would be more likely to produce results.
Pint of bitter and twisted Barman and a McEwans Pale Ale for Bergkamp the Man 😉
Or Arshavin even ! Sorry for the typo folks!
Rubbish post,makes no sense.
horrible read. Really hard going.
Pint of o negative please
TTT + Walcott + Nasri + Chamakh = terrified opposition
If TTT is the terrific triumverate of triumph the above six are the sensational sextet of success.
So is ‘Holic going to now post his masterpiece in the drinks? 🙂
Top stuff BtM. I’ll take the treat of another solid Fabianski performance and a few tricks from Nasri through the West Ham defense.
I’ll call a fairly routine and expertly executed 4-0 demolition.
Cesc on the scoresheet, joined by Arshavin with another from Walcott. As for the other…who knows?!
Large glass of red for me barkeep…assuming you’ve got the keys to the drinks cabinet.
Getting zoomby on a friday eve,.. its just past 10.
When my mind reads of the morrow, 3pm.., I remember the days..
when titi, lungberg, perez and viera,..
the quadrets they sung in tune..
The archipela was on..
when they peaked,.. no one could hold them back.
both David and Jens,.. they made us proud…
I am proud of the 49, if it was 50 we mightve forgotten.
Remember 5-0 for Arsenal at the trafford
who will raise the stakes today,..
Walcott, fab,Nasiri, song..
Wish and hope for..
will the little luke stand the ground…
hoping against hope, I do wish on 27 Dec,
the gunners stand tall in the league table
While I push self to the bed…
I bid adue for the heros past and
wish good luck for the gunners new…
nice publicity stunt by the obama admin…Funny how this comes out days after British airlines complained about the security measures required by America!!
BTM
quality my friend! that was awesome
is it only me or did some of u not understand half the post?
Another one of those top posts we’ve come to expect from you. I have to say I admire (and second) your admiration for Denilson.
Holics I need your advice: I am unexpectedly in London tomorrow, any idea on how I could score a spot at the Emirates for the game?
@Matt
if u find out can u let me know please?
Like It 😀 . Roasted ham with your finest red please
Matt, head for the Supporters Club (turn left out of Arsenal station, on next corner) and ask there. If they cannot help just get yourself in the pubs and keep asking. Anybody who wants one will find one.
@Holic
is that is possible if u dont have membership?
@ Matt,I have a spare for face value,clock end upper,but I doubt you’d sit with me!!!!
@ Matt,I’ve a spare,clock end upper,face value,I’ll be in the 12 Pins from noon.
usama, if you can find someone with a spare in the vicinity of the ground they already have the members ticket that they are prepared to sell.
Don’t pay over the odds. If you ask and fail, you will find a pub showing the game and will enjoy a better atmosphere than watching a stream at home.
Chances are you will find one though.
Any chance we can meet for a few introductory drinks beforehand Holic?
You have mail, Matt.
Top man Bhoy, you made my day, actually you mad my week!
Many many thanks!
Meet you at the 12 Pins @noon then. Pints on me!
Cheers!
I’d love to sit with you Gaz you know that 😉
Wow! Thanks for the compliments, ‘Holics. And thanks for the biggest compliment of all, ‘Holic. It’s a very real privilege to have the opportunity to have the first word in the bar tonight amongst the community of friends you’ve built up here.
Zico, the Pally Ally is slipping down nicely. Although I enjoy a few chuckles at AA’s expense, there is no one happier than me when he plays somewhere close to his very mighty potential. I just feel we haven’t really seen that (yet) this season. (Oh, and I’ll pass on Joey Barton if you don’t mind).
Matt, if I’m not mistaken, this is your first visit? I have no doubt you’ll enjoy every minute. You’ll find the ground to be something of a time machine in which 90 minutes passes in, well, MUCH less than 90 minutes.
For those of you visiting Block 91, say Hi to Chicheria and the rest of the Brazilian lovelies for me please.
It is my first visit to the Emirates indeed and I’m so excited I can’t sleep! I don’t know when I’ll have the opportunity to come back to London next so I’ll make sure to enjoy every second of it!
6-0 to the Arsenal!
BtM You’re a legend… Great read.
Cheer up Holics, these are happy times. We’ll cream Avram and the Hammers, and Chelsea will leave their points behind at Ewood Park 😀
Matt I hope you’re right about the score and your day is a memorable one. I expect Walcott and Bendtner to continue scoring goals. As a matter of fact I’m backing all of our returning players to give us a big boost including Van Persie in the near future.
Bergkamp’s The Man, true, but you sir are also ” the man”. Pure quality!!!
Matt, enjoy your visit to my old stomping ground (Holloway) and good luck with the ticket hunting.
I’ll be, as always, here in my bar, with the gunners on the box and the sound cranked up. The promiss of a footy feast and free drinks when our glorious lads triumph will once again insure a pro Arsenal atmosphere in this corner of the Lowlands.
I predict an afteroon of pain to for the porn peddlers of Ham, West. The ever blown bubble shall burst, faid and die.
Come on you riproaring………..
Lager for me and something off the top shelf for Mr BTM please sir.
Cheers.
BtM, what happens to the TTT when Jack is back?
TTT+1????
Astounding stuff BtM.
Following on Maddy’s question; what happens when RVP returns? On the right?
Lovely post BtM – I got a funny look for laughing out loud at the breakfast table, but there you go…
The return of some of our absentees and the general optimism about the development of our squad this season has got me thinking. Le boss has some interesting choices to make these days and if you look at our squad, our nominal first XI versus a second string could make for an intriguing clash. I make it as follows:
First XI
Fabianski
Sagna / Koscielny / Vermaelen / Clichy
Wilshere / Fabregas / Song
Nasri / RVP / Arshavin
vs
Second XI
Almunia
Eboue / Djourou / Squillaci / Gibbs
Diaby / Denilson / Rosicky
Walcott / Chamakh / Bendtner
OK, so there may be some movement between these teams in Arsene’s mind, but basically it would appear we have strong options in every position before even taking into account Ramsey, Chesney, Vela, Lansbury et al. I would fancy that second team to finish well into the top half of the table.
It certainly feels like interesting times for an Arsenal fan, and I guess we can’t ask for much more than that!
Obviously I’m getting way ahead of things here, but after Ramsey’s had this season to get back into things, where does he fit into the midfield if Cesc stays? You can’t drop any of Cesc, Wilshere or Song so…. change of formation? But then you lose one of the front guys.
Doesn’t matter, just nice problems to have.
