Getting Back In The Saddle, Arsenal Style
Dec 30th, 2011 by 'holic
22nd March, 1969. It is a date that will mean little to most. Old Queens Park Rangers fans may guess that it was the day Arsenal first played at Loftus Road in the top flight. Older Gooners will be shuddering, having attempted to blank out the events of one week earlier from their memory. Following a spectacular dismount at Wembley, against Swindon Town in the League Cup Final played on the Horse of the Year Showground, the Gunners needed to get back in the saddle away to the First Division new boys.
I have few memories of the day other than ‘holicdad and I stood on a small section of terrace in front of the then new South Africa Road stand, that there seemed to be more Arsenal supporters in the ground than R’s fans, and we won 1-0. Rangers were relegated and only returned four years later. The Loft was where I watched most games when we were there in those days.
Fast forward over forty-two years and we once again have to remount the horse, as it were, against newly promoted Rangers. Three points are required following the home draw with Wolves and our visitors from West London will not be relishing their trip. Having said that you know that any side managed by the somewhat eccentric Neil Warnock will be prepared to scrap for their lives. It could be an entertaining (or frustrating) afternoon.
There were few hints at the side we are likely to put out just over fifty hours before travelling across London for the tricky encounter with Fulham on Monday. Listeners to this week’s Arsecast will know I would start Robin van Persie, but considered opinion is that he will probably start on the bench. Likeliest benefactor of that call would be Marouane Chamakh. How I would love to see him produce the goods. There is not much we can do in terms of rotation in the back five.
In midfield Mikel Arteta should probably be spared two starts in quick succession. Perhaps Yossi Benayoun or Francis Coquelin could deputise alongside Alex Song and Aaron Ramsey. Theo is likely to return, although the temptation to give Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a run at Armand Traore must be strong. On the left expect a start for Andrey Arshavin with Gervinho spared for the more tricky away fixture.
The ‘holic pound looks for a holiday bonus on the back of a healthy win. To find some value I was looking at the sixteens widely available on a 4-1 home win. Then I took a look at the Gunners Gaming link on arsenal.com and saw they were offering 20/1 against the same outcome. If we create as many chances as we did against Wolves I’m sure we will not be as profligate, or unlucky, depending on your view of Tuesday’s stalemate.
Unfortunately I cannot make the game, and some of you will understand the reason why. A year on and the loss of ‘holicdad is still fresh in the memory. Every time QPR are mentioned I picture he and I in Shepherds Bush all those years ago. He put me back on that Arsenal saddle straight after that painful crash, and I have enjoyed a most wonderful ride ever since. Thanks Dad.
The Goonerholic Fantasy Premier League
I haven’t publicised this at all during the year so I should let those of you who entered know that I will be starting a cup competition this gameweek. The qualifying round will see the bottom 98 teams in the League playing off to see who will join the top 79 in the first round proper. You will find more details in the forum at the Fantasy Premier League site, when they have stopped updating for this gameweek.
I’ll update you in the week as to who did or didn’t make it through, and give a mention to the League leaders as we start a new year.
New Year, Did You Say?
I think I just did. This is a time for casting an eye over what has happened in the last year, and to thank all of you, regular ‘holics or casual visitors, for taking the time to come and read and comment on this stuff. It wasn’t always a pleasure I know. We all underwent some degree of frustration as the promise of last season melted away, and the poor start to this term sunk in. Whenever I needed a lift though I just dipped into the drinks here, and invariably a new script from one of a host of remarkable alter-egos was there to raise a chuckle, or more often a bloody good belly laugh.
I really am very lucky that so many of you choose to share your opinion and your wit here. I wish you and yours a very happy, and more importantly a very healthy, new year.
Bless you, ‘holics.

YES!!!!
2?
‘Holic –
As for the drinks, it’s been a pleasure and absolutely brilliant fun.
As for the thanks, well we owe those to you.
Cheers. The inevitable Guinness, yes a whole pint, is on the bar π
Well in Trev!
Happy new year, ‘holic, and thank you for a wonderful year of blogging gone by. Here’s wishing you and the management a healthy and happy year to come.
We both wish you and the management, small ‘holics and grand’holics a happy and healthy 2012.
I can honestly say that without this bar this past year or so would have been a lot more dull. For example, when others were moaning their way through summer and early parts of the season, the Happy Train Mk II moved steadily along and I don’t regret for one second that I reserved a seat right from the start. Thanks all, and most of all thanks to the barman for running this bar in which we are all allowed to waffle on endlessly!
Happy new year wishes to all (nice) Gooners everywhere – I hope 2012 is brilliant for all of you in your real lives as well as footballistically!
Don’t comment here as often as I should but I do vent most of my AFC thoughts on twitter so thanks to the mighty ‘holic for his well thought out pieces and I hope everything is ok with Mrs ‘holic as the year progresses.
UTA!
If Mastercard did Blogs…..
Back when I’m sober……
Oh well, back when I’m back…… π
Great post ‘holic and a deep and interesting preview of the games ahead. Perhaps this is the time to try Walcott (just once?) as the primary striker – however I’d be happier to see Chamakh deliver – he’s not the player we’ve seen this year. Having watched him six or seven times before we acquired him he is capable of so much more.
Thanks for a year of fantastic writing and if I may be so bold of kind friendship. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – for old north bank regulars now scattered around the globe your site along with blogs is as close to a pre-match pint and chat as I’ll ever get from the dusty desert of Arizona.
Wishing you (and all of us) a wonderful and healthy 2012.
Is it nearly New Year or something ? Well bugger me!
Will someone please control this stilletto and Speedo clad imbecile – it was a figure of speech for chrissakes!
Well 2011, for myself, brought a summer of wonderful romance in the most unimagined and far flung places. For that, I am most indebted to the marvellous and flagrant, sorry fragrant, Lady Nina.
And I do mean indebted. My Coutts card is worn so thin it fails to register in the machines any more, and I thought my monthly statement had been confused with the Greek government’s own.
So insatiable is the woman that I was forced to call a temporary halt to our relationship, but the spirit of Christmas has brought us back together once more.
Her spirit of Christmas was two and a half bottles of Smirnoff, and I’m afraid that my own extended to a full pint of Guinness, after which I completely lost control.
While waiting for Santa I couldn’t resist a rummage in her Christmas stockings and was quite unable to resist the sharp essence of her juicy satsuma.
On returning to my senses I realised that all that was left for Prancer and Dancer was my half nibblednad shrivelled carrott lying next to the fireplace.
Talking of fireplace, I very soon realised that while I was carried away with her satsuma, she had decked my bowels with balls of holly – the little minx is unstoppable – but I loved it !!
Happy New Year to you all.
By the way, who is this Henry chap that everyone is getting so excited about ?
nibblednad = nibbled and !!
Half time at Anfield, LFC 1 – 1 NUFC. Massive possession advantage for Liverpool and Newcastle have been pretty much crap, but for all their huffing and puffing around the NUFC penalty area, Liverpool haven’t created all that much in the way of proper scoring chances.
Holic. Once again you got it wrong and the thanks should go to you, not us π
I know that the Arsenal blogosphere/twittersphere would have been a very dark place in the last 6 years had it not been for places like this.
I for one, feel privileged to have found this place where I can express my opinions and not be ridiculed as a “blind AKB twat”. A place where I come for laughs and entertainment which has developed greatly in the last year or so and a place where friendships are made, both on the field and off the field.
Whenever I needed help with Atsenal related issues be it tickets, programmes, questions or anything else, this was always my first place to ask for that help.
Thank you, friends.
This Snir Geuli chappie sounds like a right blind AKB twat !
Bloody Hell Holic
You’ve drawn the GT Rollers away against The Arse! How the hell are we meant to win that one??
To make matter worse (please stand up and be outed Mr Clint) they are a “tainted” team. I give you…. Monkey Boy!!
Ah well, we can concentrate on the relegation battle now then.
May the best team win, and congratulations, Mr Clint (Boooo Hisssss). π
Mr C, that’s nothing. The team I am playing has Monkey Boy, Silva, Aguero and Nani… how’s that for tainted? π
Hoe can all these players be in the same team ? The transfer window hasn’t even opened yet . . .
Bloody typewriter – hoe = how
Liverpool go 2-1 up from a free kick that they should never have had, and then Bellamy fires a rather tame shot in that Krul and some Newcastle defender make a right cock-up of and in it goes.
Lars
I match you Nani, and raise you an Enrique. Nothing wrong with nice Mr Silva (ahem…)
Happy New Year Holic
Sincerest thanks to you for your hard work and excellence. And wishing you and yours a much healthier 2012.
Trev – all good in casa Catalana now, thanks. You stick in there – all will come good.
Happy New Year all. Apart from Mr Clint (Boooooo!)
3-1 Liverpool. Hollywood Gerrard scores and I can’t see NUFC coming back from this with just over ten minutes to go. Those three points put them above us in the league at least until tomorrow. Not that it really changes much for us, we still have to win our game tomorrow anyway.
19 PHW, hoe = how in Dutch. I never noticed the mistake ’till you pointed it out. π
========
As we round another year of fantastic blogging, once again my thanks go out to you Mr Holic sir for all your excellent work and giving us a respectable forum where like minded gooners can come and share opinions with dignity and respect. This place has grown from more then just a blog, it is now a community.
To all my fellow ‘holics I wish you all the very best that life has to offer in 2012.
========
As for tomorrow, it seems that everyone has forgotten that once again we’ll be up against that dispicable little toerag Joey Deacan Barton. I’d prefer that all our players just ignore him and get on with the game, but, if someone does decide to take him down, then please make sure he stays down. π
Ceers ‘holics. a round of beers on me.
*Dashes back downstairs to the bar*
Mr C@21: heh!
The change in the ground that happened when Gerrard came on is the same that’s gonna happen every time TH will come on.
It lifted the team, but most importantly the crowd.
Happy new Year to ‘holic and all ‘holics
A special wish for good health next year for all those suffering at this time including Madame ‘holic and Trev’s young un
Happy New Year, Mr. ‘Holic and may the force be with you and the Arsenal!
Drink, drink wherever you may be…and all that.
Cheers cognac – and what H2H said π
…. And a very happy, healthy and wealthy new year to you too ‘Holic, Your Management and all the fine ‘Holics that frequent this bar.
Even though I’ll be glad to see the back of 2011, it’s been a real priviledge to get to know some of you and l-o-n-g may it continue.
Will give the boys an extra big cheer tomorrow for all the departed Gooner fathers. I know my old man would have been delighted at the return of the king.
A reflective round for all please Mr.Barman and several for yourself of course π
PS: Will be meeting Top Driver Glenn and Top Man Snowy in the ASC bar pre-match tomorrow (makes a change from the Tollie! :-0). Any of you other fine fellows going (AL? SteveT?), I’d be delighted to buy you a scoop and share a blether.
Thanks for developing and hosting your oasis of good sense and fine humour ‘Holic.
A right guid ne’er to all ‘Holics when it comes.
Here’s to a win tomorrow, a quality strike partner for RvP come January, a record breaking run in the league, a signature from RvP this summer and silverware in 2012.
Cheers and a glass of bubbly for all.
….And a happy new year to all from me too!

Snir @35 –
we couldn’t forget you. You are the provider of all kinds of balls π
I’ve been hooked ever since I clicked on a link one time in August on Newsnow Arsenal, many thanks ‘Holic for the consistent high quality of writing you produce week in and out and the friendly virtual bar you run with all of its unique characters π
A pre-emptive Happy New Year to all you ‘Holics, here’s to a successful and happy 2012 for the Arsenal π
RVP hat trick tomorrow. You heard it here first. π π
I suspect we are close to that hour where the trickle of pub-goers into the bar slowly increases π
I have learned tonight it is truly not a good idea to stand up for opposition players on Twitter.
I shall do it no more.
The capacity of Arsenal supporters to turn on each other is one of the mysteries of life to me…
Great post and a happy one 2 you ‘holic and yous holics.
This bar has become a place i’m massively fond of, peopled by enormously entertaining folk whose company i feel hugely privileged to keep. But as has been said above already – the biggest thanks are due to one particularly fine fellow whose canny tone setting and depth of knowledge on a subject all here adore keeps me certainly – and may i respectfully suggest most others here – heading for this bar whenever we get the chance – which in my case is probably far too often.
As an acquaintance of mine should have wrote the other day – G.E.N.U.I.S – genuis – ‘holic. Fact!
And TS would be grand to catch with yourself and some of the other chaps tomorrow – would be awful to miss Snowy or yourself or Steve T if the opp is there. Have to confess i don’t know me way around the ASC bar and that though
CoMONUReDS!
oops – catch ‘up’. The Arsenal!
Oh yeah – and the quality of the writing re said adored subject of course
UUUUURRRRREEEEEEEeeeeeeeDDDDSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
Holic, I just want to say thank you for your hospitality and your kind words to me when I needed them most.
Hello AL,
The Supporters Club is behind the North Bank at Highbury, corner of St Thomas’ Road. I’m sure the boys and the good man will be delighted to meet you.
Only sorry I can’t be there with you, but I suspect I will be no company the next couple of days.
Be good fella.
Kind words, me, abb.
You must be thinking of someone else π
A healthy, happy and prosperous New Year to you, ‘Holic, and to all at the bar, but especially the regulars. This place is a little oasis of insanity in an otherwise mad world.
A glass of your finest claret, to raise to a wonderful year of posts, and to the one to come.
Oh Holic, I listened to Arsecast today and finally figured out whose voice you remind me of. Davey Jones ( The Monkeys)!
Cheers ‘holic – will most certainly raise a glass in your direction where ever i end up landing tomorrow.
Take care these next few ones Guv’nor, and ongoing warmest ones in the direction of the management.
Here’s hoping the boys are able to put smiles on all our faces tomorrow!
That’s a new one abb.
Not too sure Davey would agree, although of course…
…wait for it…
…I’m a believer π
Ned, thanks for your contribution.
Agree about smiles on faces, if only for a wee while…
AL @ #49 – ASC bar is located at 154 St Thomas Road, on the corner with Gillespie Road. It’s not as salubrious as our beloved Tollie but full of top Gooners and beer is really well priced too. Small cover charge on the door. More at:
http://arsenalsupportersclub.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=53&Itemid=78
Trev @#44 – Fine and thanks for asking. Hope your daughter is over the worst.
Listening to the Arsecast, you remind me of Davy Jones Locker!
Only kidding – All the best Guvnor, it’s been a long day (year)!
Here’s to a decent stream tomorrow and 3 points.
TS shall certainly look in on you grand fellows fine and true
Ooops! Crossed posts with The Maestro. Errrr…It’s so good AL, we directed you there twice π
A beautifully written post ‘holic.
Although I’ve been a reader for a long time it’s only recently I have joined the community so to speak. It has increased my enjoyment of The Arsenal enormously so a big thank you to everyone here.
Still time to wish you all a happy new year tomorrow, my wife and I have a club to go to, anything less than 3 points and I’m going to have a miserable evening, bloody sad for a man nigh on 50 but painfully true!
Once for each pint i’m allowed tomorrow TS – as new year’s eve commitments mean one is obliged to stay in control of most of ones faculties. Have i ever told yer i was a college prof?
i’ll get me cape
Oh zico, you are too kind π
Davy Jones locker indeed…
Holic is a Monkey? wtf…I didn’t know. I loved that show..
BBC Sport say that Frimpong will be going to Wolves for the rest of the season.
Well, we can only hope he comes back to us as Jack did after his Bolton loan spell 2 seasons ago or so, and plays a part in doing some damage in the title race to our immediate rivals as well π
Great piece holic. Up to your usual high standards. I also think that RVP will play. After dropping points at Wolves I can’t see that there is any scope for taking risks. Hopefully a RVP treble will allow for him to have an early shower. Le Coq could well make an appearance, especially as the latest reports link Frimpong with a loan move to Wolves. I for one think he deserves his chance.
Like others at this esteemed establishment may I also offer my thanks for a year of constant quality. The blogs are always well constructed and thought provoking. The fact that it then provides a platform for effective debate and constant wit are a credit to you and to those who contribute. As stated above, it enhances my enjoyment of everything Arsenal considerably.
Not sure what my plans will be tomorrow evening apart from raising a glass or two to 3 points. So I will take this opportunity to wish you and yours all the best for 2012. May I also extend those best wishes to all fellow holics and their families. I have not had the opportunity to meet any of you in the flesh yet. That is number one on my new year’s resolutions list. However I have constantly enjoyed the debates and reading the drinks that others have taken the time to construct. I thank you all for that.
Keep the faith.
Ops forgot my manners…evening all..been busy writing up the minutes of the last meeting. Will post soon. While I am at it may I say that what I personally love about this bar is that however crazy you feel on a given day you can bet someone crazier is already in the bar! I love that and of course the wonderful Dr Feelgood who I feel is making an Arsenal-style resurgence to top form…
Up the Arse.
Happy New Year to all of the Goonerholic clan. Here’s hoping for a good result tomorrow and hopefully TH12 (if the reports are to be believed) can make a similar contribution to what DB10 did in the twilight of his career…
Whilst I seem to be instigating a holic love in, can I please stress that out of all the above best wishes etc that not an ounce is to be direct towards the oxygen thief that is Joey Barton. Festive cheer will go out of the window as far as I am concerned. That wanker is getting both barrels.
GT, Holic is not a Monkey. This is just how rumours get started! Bale however is a monkey. And I’m going bananas just about now.
How do we go from talking about the voice of a singer of a band called the Monkeys to ‘Holic being a monkey?
I love this bar π
Holic – You were right.
AW thinks like you.
He’s gonna try and make RvP play both games.
He confirmed RvP will start tomorrow.
Evening Terry, Alright Wind…
Steve, so much looking forward to meeting someone bringing the next generation up the right way.
West Upper, thank you.
Yo Snir,
I didn’t hear that in his press conference. I hope he has said it. I feel we will rest RvP against Leeds, which should free him up for these two more important games. I fear he will be rested in one of these, and QPR at home is more obvious than Fulham away, which will obviously provide a tougher test, and where Robin has scored the winner before…
Evening Major! ‘Holic’s a monkey ?!?
As well you know, Mr Hill-Wood, sir. Thank you for blessing this establishment with your presence this year.
As alter-egos’ go, you have been a blast.
Ooo be dooo
Wenger thinks like you-hoo-hoo . . . .
A pleasure old boy, and HAPPY NEW YEAR !
I know it’s a little early but I suffer from premature congratulation π
Hah! π
Must admit though I would still love to share a cognac with the real deal. Contrary to popular opinion I understand he is the most engaging Arsenal man.
Holic – I was under the impression that he will be rested for QPR at home because Fulham away is the harder of the two and I’m utterly surprised to hear AW is even considering putting RvP in the team for two games in 48 hours. It is RvP after all.
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/transfer-news/Arsenal-Arsene-Wenger-knew-Thierry-Henry-would-fit-after-first-day-s-training-article847201.html
Have a look at what he says.
He probably said it in his journalist briefing which is after the presser.
Happy New Year Holic, really enjoy reading this blog. Hope the Goonblog is right and we are in for Podolski..now chasing a game with TH(formally14) and the German would not seem such an ardous task. 98 teams..Am lost..
‘H @83 –
I could well imagine that. There would be a few decades for you to mull over – not to mention respective tales of Denis H-W and ‘Holicdad. Actually, I wouldn’t mind listening in, π
I wouldn’t rule out TH playing at Fulham.
Have a sneaky feeling about it, especially since RvP will play tomorrow.
Not gazing at your balls again, Snir ?! π
Only balls I gaze at are made of crystal Trev π
Trev,
PHW’s dad was a kind of mystical figure when I was growing up, and the contribution the family have made just by the contacts they have is just immense.
Shame Peter didn’t understand fully what exactly he possessed at the time the sharks were circling.
One day historians will reflect on the Hill-Wood years with some reverence. Trust me on that one.
Is the ‘sharks’ reference relating to the telecomms business ?
If it’s what I think you mean, it could have made a massive difference to AFC – assuming he would have chosen to invest it that way.
If not, maybe we can talk more on dirty Leeds day.
For now, it’s G’night from me.
“One day historians will reflect……..”
Not a phrase you will ever hear at the toilet down the road. For a historian to reflect surely there has to be a history???????????
Forever in our shadows…….
Steve, Since I don’t live in London, can you explain to me why we hate the Spurs. I mean, I get the local rivalry thing and all but is there something more to it I’m not privy too?
Peter Hillwood is hilarious, when I was a shareholder I always made a point of speaking to him after the AGM’s, sooo unintentionally funny.
I saw him a couple of seasons ago outside the diamond club entrance grabbing a quick cigarette. I had to say hello even though he wouldn’t have a clue who I was. I was with my youngest (14 at the time) and as I shook PHW’s hand I introduced my son to the chairman of The Arsenal.
PHW then introduced the immaculately dressed and rather sun tanned young man next to him as the chairman (or something equivalent) of Villareal, I reached out and shook his hand and being polite beyond the point of generous wished him an enjoyable evening. Before he could even reply PHW, in true Prince Phillip style glibly turned to me and said (as if the other chap wasn’t there) ‘I hope he doesn’t enjoy his evening!’
There was no trace of humour in his voice and although I obviously felt the same way I was too polite to say otherwise….
Absolute classic!!!
Geoff…
Maybe it’s my Middle Eastern mentality, but I don’t see anything wrong with what he said and would have said the same thing π
ABB – Because they’re Spurs. That’s the way it works.
Arsenal hate Spurs and vice versa. United hate City and vice versa. Sunderland hate Newcastle and vice versa.
It’s in the laws of the game. “Hate your local rival.” π
In fact, when I was a little kid, I didn’t hate Hapoel Tel-Aviv even though they’re Maccabi Tel-Aviv’s (my team) local rival, but I hated other clubs which were more successful and were our direct title rivals at the time.
I asked my father why he hates Hapoel so much and he just said “you’ll understand when you’ll be older.”
He was right. It just works like that.
We’re everything Spurs aren’t, they’re everything we don’t want to be.
Fuck that lot.
Three points will do.
Quite nicely. π
Note in this picture: The Arsenal badge is eclipsing the QPR badge. OMEN??
http://www.qpr.co.uk/javaImages/ef/b3/0,,10373~9876463,00.jpg
Snir, Yes, I get all that, but in this case, I just feel there’s something more. But what the heck. Rivalry’s are fun for all fans. Next time we play them, I’ll make them some lasagna.
Off the bar………
Get in!
Well in Snir!
How about a repetition of this scoreline? (I know the team won’t be the same!):
18/11/89 vs QPR (h) 3-0 (att: 38,236)
Scorers: AM Smith, Dixon(pen), Jonsson
Team: Lukic, Dixon, Winterburn, Thomas, O’Leary, Adams, Rocastle (P Groves), Richardson, AM Smith, Quinn, Marwood (Jonsson)
Thanks H2H for the beautiful shot you made for yourself, it was easy for me just to tap it in π
ABB – That’s what I’m saying… Whatever “else” it is, it’s included into the fact that “they’re Spurs.”
So you don’t hate them more because of something specific, you add it to the reasons you hate them because they’re Spurs π
Kinda like the fact that I hate Hull because of the cunt Phil Brown is.
I hate VdV BECAUSE he’s from Spurs.
Do you get me or was it not clear enough π
Oh Snir, Yes I do. I’m so glad you used the smiley face too! Congrats on your goal. BTW the OX sees some action tomorrow, I just know it!
Ox/Theo against Traore… Should be funny.
Heh, I meant to say I just got off work from the bar.
I jest of course, perfectly timed set up, it was the greatset assist ever. π
*Runs to high five Snir by the corner flag.
Now to catch up on the above drinks.
Snir, I just hope you know who, doesn’t make trouble for Song, like the last time. Anyway, the game is in the bag. We’re gonna win big time.
94 Geoff.
Top story, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for clearing this one up, Mr Wenger;
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/transfer-news/Arsenal-Arsene-Wenger-rubbishes-claims-he-nearly-signed-QPR-Joey-Barton-from-Newcastle-article847231.html
I knew that we could never be interested in such a fucktard.
32 Prof T.
Great list. π
But lets not forget the efforts of the;
Wankmanc and Cusop Lick and Dribble Services.
For keeping the windows in the HT immaculatly clean.
How stupid does Barton look now π
H2H @ 108 Yes it was Gervinho, not Song who got the boot. Don’t know why I thought it was Alex. But it cost us dearly, all the same.
Is it just me or does he look like a mini Hitler with that ridiculous excuse of a bumfluff tasche?
aeb, Song got a retrospective suspension for stamping on him, so you’re not completly wrong.
That’s why I posted earlier, if we’re gonna take him down, make sure he stays down.
And don’t hug him after the match.
H2H @ 113 So I’m not crazy! Thanks for clearing that up. What a relief. My reputation was at stake (eh, eh).
Snir @ 114 You see Snir, you are very witty. Cheers!
@ ABB: Notwithstanding Snir’s valiant attempt I feel duty bound to set the record straight regarding the hatred that exists between our beloved Arsenal and that shower of shit from down the wrong end of Seven Sisters Road: Its not just a local rivalry issue that makes both sets of fans hate each other. To fully understand our enmity you have to go back to our dark & distant past. Arsenal – as you well know – started our lives at Royal Oak in Woolwich, South London (this single fact alone would have made most North Londoners hate our team)… There was some talk of the Arsenal moving to West London to be merged with Fullham but instead in 1913 Arsenal took up residence at Highbury despite the objections of the Spuds. That same year we were relegated and ended up in the second division alongside the Spuds. WE were bigger. We had more money. And even the Spuds could see that we were a sleeping giant. But World War 1 broke out and everyone was got busy playing European football for a few years. But when that game was over our wonderful Chairman – Sir Henry Norris – “negotiated” the Arsenal’s return to the top flight leaving the moaning shower of shit behind where they belonged. That is more or less where they have been ever since..(in my humble opinion)
I hope that this helps
If there is no other business I move that the meeting be adjourned. Do I hear a Second?
GT – I didn’t wanna go into details, cause like I said, that reason fits in with all the other reasons that “they’re Spurs.”
But yeah, that is actually a very good reason, despite being a good reason why they hate us. But then again, people who hate you, the least you can do is hate them back, eh π ?
OK it seems that everyone must have nodded off…I should too as I have a long trip down to the southwest coast of Jamaica (to Bluefields for all you map lovers) where I shall be celebrating new years with friends & family. Its the one time of year when the normally temperate GoonerTerry will allow himself a few extra slugs of rum drinks, fine wines or anything cold, wet and alcoholic that is handed to him to see off the old year and bring in the new. I will be sure to be toasting the good health of Mr & Mrs Holic and the fine bunch of Merrymen known collectively as Holics and I will hope to meet you all back here in this bar in the new year when we shall be talking excitedly about points gained and returning heroes and stuff like that.
Cheers
@ Snir: ABB deserved an answer to her question. I am also happy to delve into those details as it makes me so happy to do so…now I really should go to bed (0;
Snir: Here is something for you. 10 points if you identify the young GoonerTerry
http://youtu.be/HjVoD-5c5LY
0:33 – Is that you?
What do you think?
Well, I’ve got CoR on Facebook and I remember him saying you guys are lost twins or something, so I think I’m right π
And its my voice that you hear as well…well stoned with the finest Jamaican herb money can buy..yum (0;
1:22 am Jamaica time…Holy Cow Batman! Got to resally go mate. Love Bro see you soon..
Terry
Wait, what about my ten points π ?!
re: Sally? Really..OK..if you say so Terry
10 Points to Snir…collect 50 for a prize..
To echo everyone thoughts above, I wish all the ‘holics a happy and a healthy new year!
Thanks Holic for hosting this brilliant blog which has become more of a community now
We might have differing opinions from time to time but one thing that binds us all is our love for ‘The Arsenal’
So here’s to three points!
Heh Holic @83
Just throw that one out there……! π
Mind you, someone’s got to trump TaBS and knck him off his perch..
Wait – GT. Is that you singing??
We have talent in the bar!
Morning all! Big game coming up to today, as of course all our games are big in our current predicament. I do have a slight fear that our confidence shall have taken a bump after only drawing v Wolves but hope I am wrong. I don’t really mind how it looks today, just as long as we win it.
abb: to add to GoonerTerry’s post about the negotiated promotion back in 1919, it is important to notice that in those days that was actually nothing particularly strange. Teams were voted into the top flight all the time and several teams (like Manchester United, Chelsea and, iirc, Liverpool) never played at all below the first division before being voted in. The first division was to be expanded and there were no set rules for how that should be done, so a vote on what teams to add was perfectly in order. You’ll hear many Tottenham fans say otherwise on this last point, but they are wrong.
Anyway, have a great day all allow me to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year!
By the way, isn’t it funny that our Β£8 million bid for Cahill was “derisory” and now he’s being sold for Β£7?
I’m loving it. Gartside is so stupid.
Snir
I thought we bid 10 ??
No, it was 8. And even if it was 10, that just makes it even funnier π
It would indeed
So come on Snir….. give me a resume about Podolski.
Catch a tiger by his tail……
Feeling a bit poorly again today, but I told the bloke from NYC I’d go and watch the game with him so I’ll have to summon the strength to drag my carcass out later.
Yeah, what he said.
Hey Lars – doesn’t it peeve sp@rs f@ns though that the last full season before we were promoted to the top flight – pre WW1 i think – they had finished above us in the old second division – but we went up anyway and they stayed down.
And according to “Rebels For The Cause” – i think (a finer Gooner read by the way), just as that lot from shite cart lane found out we’d done ’em as per, their club parrot dropped dead. Thus giving birth to the over-used football phrase “as sick as a parrot”. Not sure i swallow the parrot story – a bit too good to be true probably. And if it’s just a myth like all fine myths it expresses an essential truth – i.e. we will moreorless always come out on top re that lot whatever – knockin’ ’em orf their effin’ perch in the process.
Apologies if any or all of the above is misremembered.
UREDS!
Well in Snir @ 100, I would of had a go at it, but I passed out due to exhaustion, bit of a contender for assist of the season H2H, purposeful directional effort off the bar to set up the chance, sublime π
Just to clarify, I never added super-unleaded fuel to the fire that’s fanning the rumour mill @ 74, ‘Holic, you ARE not a monkey.
If you are a monkey, then Joey Barton Is NOT a cunt & thug, and we all know that’s a lie cos he is the aforementioned π
H2H’s link @ 108 reinforces this quite strongly, even the boss knows it.
On the Cahill matter, tis a shame, because a Chelsea CB for England is no good news at all, not really expecting Cahill to go against the grain… Or maybe he will! I think Cuntishness is what’s stopping England moving forward internationally, need to weed it out.
4 pronged Weed-digger should do the trick, I’m looking at you Terry. /:)
abb, to expand ever so slightly on GT’s account of why Spurs hate us, we moved into their general vicinity, and were and still are, far more successful.
Jealousy ensued π
AL, Spurs had finished bottom of the first division and we finished 5th in the second. Here is a summary of what happened and some background, well at least it’s one self-appointed historian’s account of it:
http://www.blog.woolwicharsenal.co.uk/2010/02/02/the-fixed-promotion-the-corruption-and-the-match-fixing-how-the-football-league-does-business/
The story is in all good Arsenal history books indeed π
Larsene knows best!
Morning all.
It’s supposed to be one of the warmest NYE I can remember, but I’m feeling cold and flu-ed.
Well I did tell Top Man Snowy that I feared I could bring back home that Christmas bug that I had seen no trace of.
Bah.
H2H @ #109:
Edwin thanks you for your ‘forgotten supplier’. As an odious little w*nkstain, he’s probably best left forgotten come to think of it. With all due respect, etc., etc. π
@140/141:
Two Andy Gorams,
There’s only two Andy Gromas,
Two Andy Goooraaaams,
There’s only two Andy Gorams
Some further points to GT and Lars explanation to abb;
The voting system in 1919 did not produce a single vote for the LWC’s to be included in the new expanded 1st division, leading to howls of ‘bribery’ from the LWC’s towards our esteemed chairman.
The truth was of course, that even then, everyone hated spurs. π
They then had a further put down by the FA, who announced that they wanted the new league to be made up with an extra ‘London’ club… which Spurs were not, in 1919 they were part of the admin of Middlesex county council. (In 1963 the Greater London Act was passed by parliament, boundaries were moved, and Tottenham became part of London)
So they have hated us since then, for moving into ‘their’ district as they saw it, and for becoming 1st Division when they had finished above us in the last League.
They then spent about the next 40 years as a small 2nd division club, so the rivalry didn’t really get going again until the 60’s.
daydream believers perhaps? π
More if you want abb?
Due to much leaping around expected later, after a fine win π , and the evening to follow, my very best wishes for the New Year go out to all and sundry (but not to oxygen thieves lol π )
*Gorams not Gromas!* bugger…
Ah… I see some further info was added by Larsene whilst I was typing the above out π
Not getting any better. Going back to bed.
Still 3 points later hopefully.
@ Ollie
See Edwin’s earlier public service announcement. Plenty of Dr. C’s Auntie Beechams Slammers in there. If they don’t work report to The Quackery where the resident quacks will take good care of you provided you’re willing to end up feeling worse. HNY! She you for Yanited?
Yep, I shall be there TS.
1300: Hmmm, by the look of him, Yakubu did not embark on an intensive fitness drive over Christmas. In fact, he seems to have hit the mince pies in a big way. Anyway, all the action is taking place at the other end, where United are still trying to open up this massed Blackburn defence.
Heh! BBC on the fuckin’ ball again just before the Yak puts Blackburn one up. π
On the train. Now it was about this time before the wolves game that I gave it Charlie big potatoes about a big Arsenal victory. I was badly let down. So I am going to officially call that a blip.
So come on the Arsenal. Big win and a big 3 points.
Up the Gunners.
I hope you are not being tubbyist holic? There are a few of us that might take offence.
π
Get well soon, Ollie.
Couldn’t be that, Steve. Glass houses, stones etc., π
SteveT: many of his friends are a bit tubby and he has done a lot of voluntary work to make others tubby by buying them beers so he can not be tubbyist!
Ollie, best of luck with fighting the bug.
Cheers, Andy Goram and Lars.
Well I certainly don’t class myself as tubby. Tests have shown that I am exactly the weight I should be for my width.
π
In Delhi and making my way through a bottle of tolerance that tastes suspiciously like bombay saphire. Blackburn have just gone one up against the mancs, the govan baboon looks appropriately festive with his red nose and all seems good with the world. I hope it is with everybody in the Holicsphere, many thanks to you all for providing a community for us roving Arsers.
Afternoon Gents.
I’ve gotten a bit tubby over the last year, once again, as in so much in my life, the amber nectar is involved.
To quote the wise Homer Simpson;
“Ah, beer. The cause of and the solution to all of life’s problems.”
Speaking of which, I think it’s high time for a round.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Beer.
A first half that I will do so much to presume, was to Wolfie’s liking. United in position to suffer an unlikely defeat, and Goodwillie poised for action on the Blackburn bench. Quite a set of circumstances. Will Goodwillie be brought on for the coup de grace?
Beer. God’s way of showing that he really loves us.
Best wishes Ollie.
Get well (real) soon Ollie.
Yaubu…. 2-0 b’burn.
2-0 Blackburn?!?
Yakubu, even.
Berbatoss one back
2-2 now, Berbatov with his second.
Szczesny, Djourou, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Song, Arteta, Walcott, Ramsey, Arshavin, Van Persie.
Sledgehammer to crack a nut?
Good.
I know he’s an ex Spud and now a manc, so by definition he’s a giant clusterfuck. But I kinda (whispers it softly) have a begrudging admiration for Berbatoss.
He hardly ever plays, but when he does, he always causes damage. 6 goals in his last three games, ouch, I wish we had a back up striker like that.
Suprised to see AA start, I hope he puts in the ssame effort as he did against Wolves.
Secretly agrees with H2H@173, but I would never admit that so I’ll just keep quiet on that one…
Holic@172: feels a bit like that, my guess is that Arsene wants to minimize the risk of another setback which could be seriously detrimental to the confidence of the squad.
H2H@174: agreed yet again, and also interesting to (presumably) see Gervinho come on v a little more tired opposition.
Un-fudging-believable.
What a blunder by De Gea.
WTF??? 3-2 Blackburn!
Man Outed can’t defend set pieces. C’mon Blackburn.
Heh, me and H2H in tandem again π
De Gea really is an awful keeper when it comes to crosses. Having said that, the general defending by United in the build-up to the corner was rather crap.
And a little glimpse of Goodwillie. π π
8 ball, you appear to be a bit pre-occupied with David’s Goodwillie?
Afternoon, everyone.
Hangover gone, off to dip my toes in a stream….. 8)
Hi All ,
Great post ‘Holic , and hope that all the good memories of your Dad will be able to make easier your sadness .
Just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the regulars here and of course to Holic himself for making it all possible .
Finding myself last March with time on my hands and wanting to mark the anniversary of Rocky’s passing with a few thoughts , I was fortunate in the extreme that I posted here .
A finer bunch you couldn’t wish for . I think it is a truism that if a hundred pairs of eyes watch a game of football , you will get a hundred different opinions . That this site is able to discuss those differences with such equanimity , courtesy and wit is fantastic .
Supporting Arsenal is a privilege . There were times this year when it was easy to forget that . This site , and the people that contribute to it , made that privilege even more marked .
Notwithstanding all the insight , opinion and commentary on all things Arsenal , the overriding emotion felt when trawling through these pages is always a huge “heh π ” . Thank you all .
Wishing everybody a safe night tonight and a very happy and healthy new Year .
Almost forgot … Good luck everybody and COME ON THE ARSENAL !!!!
My hangover’s gone too.
Holic @ 66 – I nearly apologised for 61, and then remembered. You’ve taught me well. π
Ok, so Blackburn have won three games this season. Two of them against us and ManU…
And now, if I EVER hear anyone say that fucking “Man United would never…” horseshit after we have dropped unexpected points I will, to use the Holic expression, land one on their beak.
Unbelievable.
Blackburn now have 14 points, half of which were earned from a home game against us and away games to L’pool and IOU. Wierd.
And the LarsH2H tandem continues.
Right, off to the neighbour to watch our game. Happy New Year to you all!
Lars at 185 spot fucking on.
I was quite riled by some stuff I heard/read after that Wolves game, pandering to Purple Nose and his mob.
I hope this result shuts up some of the nonsense.
Of course even more, I hope for 3 points now π
What were the odds of Blackburn doing that !!!
Haha up your arse fergie.. Happy birthday you bastard…
hehehehehe
COYG… Make this a very special NYE
Right TV is on now.
Until later, Gooners!
Re: Feelgood @182. After a bracing cold shower, Goodwillie is all but forgotten. Up the Arse! π
I’m still shocked.
Still.
Utterly shocked.
3-2 to Blackburn, at Old Trafford!!!
Puts aside his differences with Blackburn for once and puts the ball forward for the Yak to run onto… FEEDING THE YAK!
Come On You Gunners!!
Trying to get a live stream to show the game. Can anyone suggest a good stream?
COYG
OK. My feelings for Blackburn have passed. Up THE ARSE!
Toby, try this one.
http://www.firstrowsports.tv/watch/100302/1/watch-arsenal-vs-queens-park-rangers.html
Come on you gunners!!!!
-Toby
+Neasden Gooner
\o/\o/
Cheers Joshua
How’s that not a foul on AA?
Wake up ref you bumbag.
No sanction for that is the cue for Barton to start kicking, H2H
So close by RvP.
Robin Wants to score! π
Barton – punk
Indeed Ollie, that was a horrid foul on Arteta.
Yellow was a light punishment.
Scumbag Barton in ankle breaking attempt. Thank fuck he got at least a yellow
Jaysus again not Robins day?
Fuckin hell ref. That’s hands, you blind *&65*^%
How is that not a penalty?
Oncr more different football rules for the Arsenal. 3rd clear penalty not given in 2 games. Sorry but it’s not normal
How`s does one justify not awarding that penalty?
Atkinson is a total cunt.
TV gets a card for a Kos foul, this is beyond a joke.
Pathetic indeed H2H
RvP is thinking about the record too much.
The Kos tackle wasn’t even a foul.
Neither was JD’s tackle.
How many corners for a goal?
How many handballs for a penalty?
Nobody can point to a lack of drive as the reason we`re not ahead at HT this time around. Just unlucky QPR has the convenience of protecting the ball in the box using all their limbs knowing no penalty will be awarded.
How does Arshavin merit a start with continued failure over the promise of the Ox?
Can’t decide who’s worse – the commentators or the ref. π
Re: H2H @200: A true bartender’s goal. π
Atkinson is killing it, utter disgrace.
We have to get Gervinho and Ox on.
I wasn’t on to jump on the Ox bandwagon but we need players who can run at their defenders since we’re up against this organized, rigid defense.
*one
Re: Joshua @221: At least you can turn the commentators off, which I recommend strongly. The ref on the other hand must be aware he is due us a few.
Joshua, are you listening to the pair of cunts on Paddytanta?
‘holic, I’m watching in the pub with irish setanta
8ball, I’m tempted to, but I do enjoy hearing the fans give Atkinson and Barton a good boo.
surely not two games in a row? π
Incompetent reffing seems to be the norm now.
How is Barton still on the field?
Why is Taarabt not at least on a yellow?
What has to happen for us to get a penalty lately?
Why is the standard of refereeing in the toilet in supposedly one of the worlds best leagues?
Shocking decisions all over the field, but don’t think that we’re the only ones getting the shitty end of the stick, the standard this year in many games has been absolutly shocking.
===
I got the feeling that Robin’s trying too hard, I’ll be glad when this year is over and that record will be out of his mind, so he can go back to scoring for fun.
French commentators rather decent and spot on as usual.
222 8Ball.
Cheers mate.
H2H is spot on too also in his 231 from start to finish.
In fact, I think he reads my mind.
Poor distribution from our midfield today, lads.
H2H, agreed. We are not the only ones falling victim to these egotistical, incompetent cunts. Every week, every game, they are fucking up to a greater or lesser degree.
I’m now firmly in the ‘give the useless cunts technology’ camp.
Ollie – Would prefer French commentary (even though I wouldn’t understand a thing).
H2H – Agreed. The fact that TV was booked for a foul by Kos (that shouldn’t have even been a yellow) sums it all up.
I also feel that you’re in need of a snabble Ollie.
Auntie Beechams slammer?
Football could learn a lot from the examples of rugby and ice hockey. Both manage to use video replay without disrupting the flow of the game.
Cheers, H2H. Feeling a wee bit better (due to Ibuprofen and/or watching the Arsenal); but slammer welcome.
Joining late all. I agree Holic (and lovely post as well, thanks for the great year!)- the ref’ing standards are such that technology really could only help at this point, unfortunate but true.
COME ON U REEEDDDDSSS!!!!!
235BtM.
It’s because they’retrying to pass trough the middle where there is no space. For most of the half the left flank was wide open yet that were no player in red shirts in that area.
We need to spread the play a little better in the next 45.
COYRRR’s
H2H spot on, it’s the width we’re missing. This is nothing to do with the ref
Not to be picky, but Walcott is offsides often so unneccesarily!
H2H, with Russia’s finest out left that’s as good as a void. For me, too many passes from the midfield are being over hit or misplaced.
One of these passes will come off, surely? Don’t mind them keep trying.
Geoff don’t think anyone said that it was due to the ref.
His total incompetence is another issue… although a penalty would be good news!
Yossi or Rosicky on for Arteta?
Another FB goes pop.
Luke Young yellow a little too lenient, no??? How far off the side of the pitch was that??
I agree technology will help and should be used but to blame the fact we we’re not ahead is to ignore out failings.
Get that useless cunt Arshavin off the pitch now (if that doesn’t produce a goal nothing will)
BT8BBGFG- we could use the first of RVPs hat trick right about now!
O fuck me
That was one of those passes.
Oh Theo.
Theo not having the best of games.
FFS
Fuck me Theo π
We’re not playing with the handbrake off. That was easy meat for Theo and normally one he’d take.
Joshua@254: understatement of the year!
Time for a new front three, boss.
Fucking useless Arshavin, told you!!!!!!!
He scores when he wants to.
RVP RVP
30 minutes to go – Flipper and Ox on please please please
Rockin Robin!
RvPPPPP
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
nice assist AA.
Arshavin with a most precise assist π
Always works π
Delicious pass by Arshavin.
Nice one Robin.
The anti-jinx works π
Shut up ‘holic, HE SCORES WHEN HE WANTS!
Credit where credit is due: Great layon by Arshavin, as well as great finish by RVP!!
Nice pass from Arsh
Heh. Serves me right – missed that because I was typing!
Still , bring ’em on…..
Quality touch from AA.
Rosicky, Benny n Joon, bring all three on for Arteta n Arshavin
Sweet little pass from Asharvin! I do hope that is his swan song…
BtM.
Coq is now supplying the width that was sadly lacking in the first half. We’re starting to look more dangerous on that side.
Wow, that goal is still lingering in the mind, no? Beautiful to see…
I don’t have many memories of Bothroyd for our Young Guns. Not a loss based on today’s game.
Agreed H2H. Coq looks the more mature player every game.
Sorry guys but the credit is mine, see my post @250
Barton gets away with an elbow…. Again.
I have four friends from US visiting LOndon. Tried to get four seats together. Couldn’t. Bummer to see so may empty seats in the ground. I think Arsenal needs to tighten up the auto-ticketing software.
Fuck me.
Sometimes I wish I was good at football just to put characters such as Barton to their place π
H2H- come on, it’s good ‘ol Joey. He wouldn’t hurt a fly!
I like Coq H2H. TV is many things but an attacking full back is not one of them (which comes as some surprise to me). We’re making a poor qpr team look good here. That wasn’t a foul by robin.
Indeed Pi, he only eats them, the shit chewing cunt.
Sorry, PiK, time for a new keyboard.
Pi is quite a bit more profound though! π
The Ox may never be revealed….
No complaints about that sub.
O Flipper, point blanc miss.
The loss of the feed… shit.
Gervinho is never going to be the fox in the box is he?
Who wants an assist for a triple century! Let’s invigorate this game!
RVP’s touch is insane!
Villa up 2-1 against Chelsea.
And Swansea are level against Sp*rs.
Chelsea losing, spurs drawing – come on lads, put this one away and set me up for a massive knees up tonight.
Come on Arsenal!!
3-1 villa. Love it.
Bang
Scott Sinclair gets me, and hopefully Swansea, points…
Goonerholic, Sinclair is on our side. π
Let’s make this game interesting not be letting them back in but getting Robin another, eh!
We can’t put these teams away can we? No way that this should be a nervous finish.
Robin wants it toooooo much.
Come on you reds.
4 mins to hang on.
Fucking hell, Gervinho’s gotta fright for the goal!
Flipper keeps falling over his own feet.
Top four for new year’s.
3 massive points.
Chelsea in the rearview mirror.
Congrats, RVP. COme on U REDS!!! Up the table we go.
What a fantastic sequence of results today.
And 1-0 to the Arsenal, my favourite scoreline π π
Perfect weekend.
Chelsea, United and Spurs all losing points and we capitalize.
This just makes the Wolves match even more frustrating.
AVB to be fired? *watch this space*
Shame about that pointless record, but I’ll take the 3 points.
Good stuff, Arsenal!
That was not easy but I’ll take the three points.
Wow, Snir, now I see that Chelsea lost and Spurs drew!
Happy days!
New Year’s Eve celebrations well under way, Cheers Arsenal, Cheers Villa, Cheers Swansea you all did your part. π
Great stuff (the results). Opening the first beer..
If Flipper could just do 30 minutes of extra finishing practice every day, he’d be a hell of a player….
CHAMPAGNE TIME!
Happy new year Reds!
Wow look at those results around the league today?
Well done boys! Shame about the record. Imagine RVP playing alongside Henry in his prime?
It would well and truly be over!
8ball, Don’t forget Blackburn. π
YESSSSSSS!
the last five minutes i was pouring every bit of staunchness i possess through the tv screen into the lads, to hold on and take the three points. kind of tough at 8:45 in the morning after only one cup of coffee, but YESSSS!
fourth place, thank you villans, thank you swansea, thank you blackfuckingburn rovers… what a killer diller morning!
btw, happy new year to all ‘holics, and here’s hoping (without looking at the drinks since last night) that trev’s li’l gal is on the up, and that mrs. ‘holic is putting ‘holic to work…
You know… with those results the GT Rollers might just sneak through to the next round….
All we need is for NB to help us out and get points off City π
I like us getting clean sheets! π
So unlucky, I transferred Sinclair into my FFL team but he’ll only be in it next week!
The Arsenal take all 3 points.
The captain finishes on a respectable 35 goals in 2011, and 21 I think this season.
Man United get done in 3-2 at the Old Toilet on the Red-Nosed Cunt’s birthday.
Chelsea looks royally at home by 3 goals to 1 against Aston Villa.
T*ttenham cock it up thankfully at Swansea away, a 1-1 draw.
A Man City loss tomorrow against Sunderland away, and I’ll be a very happy Gooner, happier than I currently am if that’s possible.
GOYG!!! π
watching that space snir set up…which club was in crisis again?
and max six points back of third. time for scum to show what shit they really are after the turn of the new year…
Quality result(s).
If you told me on 1 Sept we’d be top four at new year’s eve I’d have laughed in your face. Respect due to the gaffer and the lads. Whatever bottle they lacked last season they’ve show it these last few months.
Now can we please go and buy this German so that we can all stop shitting it every time we fail to put a team away at home?
wind, even a man city draw tomorrow and the new year’s day crabfest will take on an extra luminescent gloss…
The Chelsea game is on C+ sport now. I might watch this π
*To the theme of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, “Love lifts”*
“points lift us up where we belong, where van mans goals they fly, and Henry’s near by”…(all together now)
Ollie, shame about the record but it’s like one of the guys said on the Arsecast.
Records for calendar years are stupid cause football is played from August to May not from January to December, so fuck the record, I’ll take the 3 points.
Blackburn were 20-1 against for today. In a two horse race.
Good point Snir – so how many leage goals does he have so far this season??
Brilliant!!! Just brilliant!
1-0 to the Arsenal!
Watching the other teams’ highlights, will be back….
catalan, hopefully that’s made a lot of lancashirians (lancashirites?) even more positioned to go off tonight…
I’ll drink to that, Snir.
scruz, surely you mean ‘people from Surrey’, right? π
I’ll have to wait ’till tonight for the highlights of the other games, which I will still probably miss due to bar time.
Sport1 are now showing the entire Arsenal QPR match again. Must be some gooners in the studio there.
lol @ ollie, i think they’ll be riding in surreys after that win…better than drink driving!
Well done Villan – if you are reading this – have a Happy New Year, you did well, despite your manager!
@ 330, Luminescent gloss if that draw happens Scruz, but there’ll be stars in my eyes if Sunderland and Bendtner take the home win, maybe just maybe Nicklas will produce something speical… π
3 Points behind the LWCs and they still have to come to the Grove.
OK so they have a game in hand, but the Best Team in the World are starting to get found out. Bring on St Totts day – its coming, as sure as eggs are eggs.
Oh and Happy Birthday Fergie, ya torn-faced weedgie toe-rag.
Only 6 and 3/4 hours left of this year – and I’ve yet to have a drink…..
Weird scenes inside Feelgood Mansions…. 8) 8)
wind, that would be even better…one last favor old nick can do for his soon-to-be-former team. watch those stars, though, they might cause you to miss out your next century…
Haha, Blackburn were 3-2 spoil Sir Alex’s 70th Birthday π
Love it when the banter’s on the other foot π
zico and wind, de gea apparently gifted him with a howler (monkey) for his birthday…and here i thought it was ‘holic that was the monkey!
Ahh Scruz, century scoring hasn’t been easy lately, I’ve lost my vision, my pace, my lurk!
Time to hit tabs’ training pitches if I wanna get back on form for the New Year π
‘Holic, in all honesty, 347 is of the highest quality π
Plaudits to you Scruz π
wind, it does seem there have been a lot of century-makers lately, but you’ve got to admit it’s a good thing to have the whole squad banging in those drinks…
‘cheers, wind. π
i feel like a six-year old after opening a box with a puppy inside he has wanted for a year…can’t stop saying “happyhappyhappyhappyhappy” and rocking in my chair…
Just to clear someting up.
‘holc’s voice was likened to that of Davy Jones who was a member of the Monkees.
Galen Bale however can be likened to a monkey.
De Gea was indeed made to look a monkey by fluffing at an easy cross.
LOLLLLL I just remembered it’s Fergie’s birthday.
LOLLLLLL this is funnier than Basel.
But then again, it isn’t!
Catalan, he has 18 in 19. Last season he had 18 as well, in 25 EPL games.
Scruz.
I’d advise you not to leave a puppy in a box for a year.
Sorry for this, about to dampen the mood…
TV out for two to three weeks.
How poetic, Tony Adams on his first visit to the new stadium sees a 1-0 to The Arsenal!
h2h, i probably should have written “monkee” for ‘holic.
if i’d left a puppy in a box for a year i’d not be happyhappyhappy now, would i.
geoff, just saw that: http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/football/886128-forget-thierry-henry-tony-adams-returns-to-arsenal-to-see-his-statue
and snir, DAMN.
And also Titi’s paperwork won’t be ready in time for Fulham.
Not the dreaded “two to three weeks”.
How can they diagnose that so soon?
2-3 Weeks!
Fucking hell…
FUlham, Leeds, Swansea away, potentially United at home as well!
Why, Thomas, why!!!
Scruz @ 350, you’re right, and laying a nice assist into the box gives as much satsifaction as scoring the goal, as our captain knows π
I just hope that come Monday, we don’t undo all the good work we did today in closing the gap…
You really are the harbinger of bad tidings today Snir. π
and now frimps is a wolf: http://www.wolves.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307~2561647,00.html
wonder if we still have time to cancel it, on the news of tv…song can play central, kozzer on the left, and le coq on the right.
Guys, it’s only a calf strain.
Has nothing to do with the ankle/Achilles.
He’ll be back Djourou style.
Snir, really? Typical. Knowing our luck TV will be out until next year! π
Now, go off and play with your balls!
So, RVP on target for 36 goals this season at the going rate…
Guys, itβs only a calf strain.
Reminds me of ‘It’s only a flesh wound’.
Well, for some people calf strain is like a broken leg (i.e Diaby) but for some people it isn’t.
TV is one of them.
He’s only out if it’s his Achilles… π
@ Ollie
merely a scratch π
Evening Chaps & Chapettes: On the road. Found a little hotspot and more importantly a dodgy stream to watch us beat QPR. But the best part of the day so far is hearing old red nose blaming the pitch for their defeat (the pitch wa heva)..No SAF the pitch was shit..ha, ha..
I’m on the road again..will catch up on the drinks later…Good work boys..on to the cousins at Fullham for more fun in a day or two..
Up the Arse
I think I might be tempted to watch that again tonight now, zico. :p
ya gotta hand it to soccernet, at times.
this had me laughing so damn hard i nearly couldn’t do a situp…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZpR2OPAYqk&feature=player_embedded
watch the whole thing. it’s worth it.
@z, if he can’t tackle ’em, he can bleed on ’em.
CG @ 320 You read my mind. Can we add Theo as well.
Theo doesn’t have the right to look disappointed if he’s subbed off when he puts in those sorts of performances…
Wind @ 375 Agree. Really wanted to see the Ox gets sometime on the pitch also. Le Coq looked really composed, proud of his efforts. And Robin, as usual poured his heart and soul into the game.
The table looks a lot better than four hours ago, but how much sweeter would it look if we had those four dropped home points against Fulham and Wolves?
Our long-standing failing to turn chances into goals, and thus not kill off games once we get in front, remains a concern. We should have beaten QPR by at least three or four goals. Goal difference needs boosting urgently. The way results are going this season, GD could be worth a place come the end of the season.
Lack of width you say??????????
Too congested in the middle you say???????????
A good day’s work.
I wish ‘Holic, the management, regulars and occasionals a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2012.
A glass of Sauterne barrel-aged Glenmorangie to all, barman and have a double yersel, my good man.
NBN @ 377 Spot on.
Less than 6 hours and still
no alcohol
is that self imposed, zico?
Roxette has her fascist skirt on π

Sorry to miss Snowy and TS. Due to certain circs found meself running late so stuck with what i knew and ducked in to the tollie for a swift one. As luck would have it i arrived just in time to catch the last couple of mins of the red manc debacle. At the final whistle the tollie serenaded the purple nosed knight with a rousing blast of “happy birthday to you” – then i toasted absent tollie chums all the way from A to Z and swallowed my pint.
Found my perfect spot at the Ems at the back of the bottom tier of the North Bank – where we all stood and shouted and bollocked and bantered our beloved team on to a resounding 1-0
walk-over.
In truth,as i’m sure you lot saw, QPR kept it tight and made things difficult for us. But our lot stuck at it as they’re wont to do – and saw us home – as they seem to more often than not. Then we got to hear the rest of the results. Yee-Haa!UreDS!
Happy new one ‘holic and holics – things is looking up i reckon – overall!
Zico: and you’re proud of that?
zico@383: could that be this http://bit.ly/vkssNm?
378 Steve T.
I was honestly thinking of you when I typed those things.
Phew, a win is a win is a win. A very, very unexpected home loss for Chelsea to Villa and Spurs dropped points. Have not yet had time to back-drink, will maybe not have time to until much later so for anyone in here, there are several cases of champers at the bar to be uncorked whenever any of you enter the new year!
Lars@388: you are an officer and a scholar. We shall attempt to do them proud.
Ned that’s a no. A lot more scary.
Geoff that’s also a no – though not sure which post you were referring to, but be careful, you don’t want to mess with Rox.
Anyway, she just popped out.
And this cold bottle found its way into my hands…….ah sweet nectar.
Happy New Year, when it comes. As has been said much more eloquently above, god bless Holic and his Holics. You’re all special.
I will see you next year – this being Scotland, it’s going to be a wet night π
Joshua, right you were to point out my dreadful lapse at mentioning Blackburn along with Villa and Swansea as all having done their part. π
On the bad news side, I just saw about TV’s injury, so:
With Coquelin at left back, Song at centre back and Frimpong at Wolves, who does that leave us to play at defensive midfield?
Maybe it will snow in Minnesota next year? About the same chance as Blackburn beating Man Utd the next time they play. π
Actually, a little bit better chance than that …
zico@390: popped out of the dress?
Holic!
First of all what a great piece you have shared with all of us! Top BLOGGING in my eyes as awlays is pure class just like our love!
Great contributions from everyone as always classy too, I apologies I have not been able to add to them I have been a busy boy as they say!
It was not the easiest games of all it has to be said, definitely not the walk in the park we have all imagined! However I believe the better team won at the end of the day! Hats off to QPR they gave us a stern test especially in the first half we looked very vulnerable at times! We also did not start after the break with great believe.
Yet again Robin Van Great got the vital goal his 35th and the Little Russian provided a ball we have not seen in a very long time. We have certainly become very frustrated of him of late, however today he provided that vital killer pass and I’m holding my hand up here I have not been on his side of late but I still think if he can get more starts he will get his shooting boots on and show us why he plays for The Arsenal!
Great Win and it wasn’t easy by any means…!!! Lads gave us something more to celebrate tonight!
This leave me to say may this New Year bring newly found prosperity, love, happiness and delight in yours and your families lives!
π Come on you GOONERS, HOLIC AND HOLICS π
8ball.
We can still have Kos and BFG as CB, JD at RB and Miquel at LB.
And Zico hope Dr Feelgood and Roxette will have a good one too!
Snir, it should do, Miquel’s come in leaps and bounds.
Slides the ball into the box smoothly…
Notches from the central line?
Get in Steve T!
Glad I could return the favour from a few sessions back with the assist π
Snir, how do you know Henry’s paperwork won’t be done in time for Fulham?
Get in. Wonderful Arshavinesque type ball from Wind.
H2H. Very thoughtful. I think of you too…
π
Was going to ask the same re Henry? Also wondered where the news about TV is? Can’t see that either.
Well in Steve T. Last 400 of the year. And most get on the Victoria before attempting that sort of shot. So top skills.
There is always Bartley to be recalled from loan at Rangers if we have a true CB crisis.
Wind @401 AW said it won’t…
https://twitter.com/#!/bbcsport_david/status/153166241073336320
How stupid is Neil Warnock?
Said RvP “got away with murder” on his fouls on his CBs.
Stupider than I thought he was.
Steve, Wind.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16374624.stm
He talks about TV and Titi in this interview.
I watched Warnocks BBC interview on the Wenger link…
O my god what a twat.
snir and h2h, what a wonk. “slag slag slag, but oh, he’s a great player”.
bit me, warnock.
btw, zico, glad to see roxette has figured a way for you out from under the facista apron, at least a little.
Snir@405, Warnock is an idiot who has probably never ever blamed a defeat on anything that has anything remotely to do with himself. It’s absolutely unbelievable that Arsene has been branded a “whinger” when in fact he very, very rarely blames ref (and when he does it is most often motivated) and this twonk still has a “nice old man” reputation about him.
Thanks Snir.
Warnock was a cock all game. How he gets away with his antics I will never know. He is a disgrace.
TV out for Fulham? Blast, that game had his name written all over it!
Anyway onwards and upwards! In steps MiQuel! We’ll be fine!
Gotta head down to the bar Gents.
So here’s wishing you all, all the best for 2012
“Shaun could have won it for us” – Neil Warnock.
Yeah, would that have been with that only chance of the game when Szczesny saved and Koscielny was ready to intercept behind him had the ball gone that way?
Can not in any way agree with any claim that QPR deserved anything from this game. We should have hammered them, because no matter how rigid and sloppy our game was at times we still created many, many more chances than they did. And we should have had at least one penalty.
Hi, ‘holic ,
I’d like to wish you and yours a happy new year.
Same to all the ‘holics.
Cheers
Geoff @94 – great story, i think we’ve got PHW fairly well taped on here π
Tabs – good to see you, HNY to you.
N7 @329 – I think you’ll find True Storey said exactly that in September. Mind you, sales of HT MkII season tickets were very slow at the time π
HNY all, MotD now – that’s what it comes down too in the higher reaches of mid-Devon π
Missed my 2nd game since Aug 2006 today π
Many, many thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts yesterday about my daughter. Without wishing to turn the blog into some sort of NHS direct, I hope it is appropriate to mention that the first signs of improvement are happening this evening. Cheers all π
I think that settles it then.

I’m not sure 10 million is enough. But they’ll probably ask for 20 and we’ll settle for 15 million.
That is great news to round off the year with, Trev!
In about ten minutes it will be 2012 here in Sweden, so time to crack open some virtual bubbly! Cheers everyone, and massive thanks for the past year – looking forward to an even greater one!
Trev @ 415 Wonderful news about your little one. Happy New Year.
Holic and the Management, Here’s hoping the coming year brings happiness and good health. And Holic, I’ll bet your dad was one special person.
Encouraging links @ 416/417 Snir, that should settle it, our captain isn’t one to be turned by the waving of others money, a successful 2nd half of the season should put pen to paper π
Just seen the Captain score on MotD, looking at the passion in that celebration, he wants to be at this club.

Evening Holics
Not a game to live long in the memory. The first 30 minutes was played at too slow a tempo, passes going astray in the mid-field and too many out of the “Denilson” song book. I was becoming increasingly concerned that chances were few and far between and that our wide players , Theo and AA23, were totally ineffective.
We had Szczesny to thank for an excellent save from Wright-Phillips otherwise we might have been in trouble. RVP had a couple of chances early on and Theo missed a good chance following a RVP free kick.
At least Barton was booked for a nasty foul on Arteta. The Ref then made a complete fool of himself when booking TV5 for a foul which was actually committed by Kos. We all joined in the chant that followed!
RVP had a great chance from a TV5 through ball but put it over the bar. We were all getting a bit frustrated in the stand and had visions of us dropping more points.
There were a couple of claims for hand ball in the box but I wasn’t sure on either case and Rambo had a great volley put behind for a corner.
Things bucked up in the second half, with TV5 going off with a problem to be replaced by Le Coq, who immediately gave us extra attacking flair on the left.
Pat Rice spent most of the second half on his feet in the tech-area urging us on .I was hoping to see The Ox but to no avail ,he remained on the bench. The best chance fell to Theo who raced on to a great through ball from Rambo but then put it wide with only the keeper to beat! It was not his day!
Then our hero came up with the goods a great left foot shot from a fine pass from AA23. 1-0 to the Arsenal we all sang but another goal was what was required.
Another nail biting finish , Rambo had another effort , just over the bar and Theo was replaced by Gervinho who was given an easy tap in from great play by RVP but he missed!
There were a couple of blocked shots towards the end but we failed to take our chances. If Arsene needed to be reminded we need reinforcements, today was the perfect example of our lack of firepower up front and Vermaelen’s injury now means the LB situation is critical. Please Arsene don’t dither the boys need help and Henry is not a long term solution1
As always COYRs
Well guys, I’m off to work but I just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed your company. We all have our troubles and worries, that’s why this place is so special. For a little while we can be carefree and talk about our beloved Arsenal. So I wish you a happy and healthy New Year.
A blessed New Year to all of you lovely ‘holics. May it be full of beauty, joy, love, and a few Arsenal trophies.
‘holics,
it’s about as hard a day as anyone can go through from lunchtime today to lunchtime tomorrow. It’s made easier by a number of things. I have a Billy Liar like ability to cast the real world to the back of my mind.
I also have a bunch of new friends and old from virtuality. Some of you have become more than real. All of you have become special.
I wish the old fella could have met you.
Happy new year, you wonderful fuckers.
Take care, ‘holic, and I hope it turns out for the best.
On another topic, if Suarez is as guilty as this article makes him sound, then the penalty handed out is certainly not too severe.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16375963.stm
Holic, words can’t describe what you and this bar mean to me so I won’t try.
Happy New Year everybody.
Since I don’t celebrate it (we celebrate Rosh Hashana – the Hebrew calendar new year), I’ll wish myself something different…
Happy opening of the transfer window ! ! π
Love it!
Happy new year Holic and Holics..Peace and Happiness to all Gooners everywhere
Happy new year to you `Holic and to all the `Holics!
May our meteoric rise from 15th to 4th in barely 3 months inspire all of us for 2012.
Happy New Year ‘Holic and all ‘Holics!
Here’s too a great 2012 for all of us and for the mighty Arsenal! π
Snir – you work so hard on these links you can be allowed a couple of days of speculation madness. Enjoy mate π
‘Holic –
that special ability of yours may be Bushmills Syndrome.
Thanks, and all the very best, π
Happy new year to all the ‘holic luvvies!
‘holic, i am sure your dad would be ready to smack that same squidge in the puss who’s yelling against henry after three goalless games (or whatever inspired arseblog to suggest you’d had a pint of ale before the last arsecast) as well…and is paying close attention to you and yours this year on.
trev, glad to hear li’l miss trev is on the mend! sick kids are scary at any time, and at the holidays it’s just a little bit more.
happy new year to all in the ‘holicbar, and in goonerland. it’s less than 7 hours to go here in hahafornia, and the missus is having a first glass of wine, and i a hop ottin’ ipa. a round of favorites for the bar, on lars’ tab.
Ahhh, lovely, just arrived home from a hugely overpriced, overrated new years eve dinner at a west end venue…suit off, trackies on and Espn goals viewed. Especially enjoyed the man Utd, Chelsea highlights….:)
Also having watched our 2 minute summary I’m quite surprised at the number of chances we created.
New year? Just another day in paradise
Happy New Year Holics!
Still drinking!
Geoff
You are the man! 2012 is saying this btw!
Must be a special day, the report is not up here yet π
Happy New Year all.
My boss is cool, he wished me and the Gunners a happy new year!
Happy New Year to ‘Holics everywhere.
Slainte
Good morning Arthur, Ollie, and bath. Gentlemen and gentle men all. Happy new year to you.
At least I beat Blogs to the ‘publish’ button, but I suspect his account will be rather more comprehensive…

Morning and a very HNY to all!
Another fine day out yesterday at The HoF augmented by Glenn and Snowy at The ASC Bar where we watched the second-half of the Manure game. My how we cheered and sent SAF special birthday greetings.
A fairly low tempo game (esp. the first 30 mins) but we did enough and should have tucked away at least 3 or 4 (as usual) but once again it’s that man again, Captain Vantastic and his sweet left foot that saved the day. The assist from Arshavin was also sublime. As usual with refs these days, we were denied at least one clear-cut penalty but that now happen to all clubs. However, booking the wrong player (TV instead of Kos) borders on third-degree incompetence.
Stand-out players for me (RVP aside) were Szczesny, Kos and Coquelin. The Coq made a real impact when he came on and has grown in that temporary LB role even since the Villa game. (Incidentally H2H, Theo was awarded a pen at that game).
Marvellous set of results. I’ve said for months we’d be Top 4 by Xmas and it’s nice to be proved right from time-to-time (Cheers Trev @ #415).
Despite what Arsene may or may not do in the transfer window, from what I saw yesterday we really need to buy another forward player and a LB if we are to push on for the business end of the season. Even if Gibbs were fit for our next game, in my mind he still has loads to prove before being a regular starter.
On to Fulham tomorrow. That will be a really tough game. We need a win but I think a draw will also be a decent result.
PS: Neil Warnock is an absolute twatspatula for accusing Robin of being a cheat. If we were that bunch of rugby playing, mouth dribblers from Stoke then PHW would be on the blower to Bernie asking for a written apology. What a sore loser and a prat. Just because he looks like a fed-up granny waiting at a bus stop, there’s no need to take it out on a clearly superior bunch of players and one of THE best strikers in the world today.
PPS: AL – It’s a shame we didn’t get to see you yesterday. In The Tollie for Leeds?
PPPS: ‘Holic – thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
PPPPS: The CMC remains open. In honour of Hogmanay and a win that deserves celebration.
