Sunday Kind Of Love, Or Sunday Bloody Sunday?
Feb 21st, 2012 by 'holic
Lost in the veritable storm of words, of claim and counter-claim, of blame and absolution, lies almost forgotten the silent majority of Arsenal supporters who just want things to get back to normal, and the impending North London derby, one of the highlights of any season.
Some interesting ‘drinks’ in recent days have me wondering if those of us who avail ourselves of the opportunity to share our views, whether wanted or not, with the worldwide web, are anywhere close to representing what Arsenal supporters are truly feeling at the moment. If I may play the particularly burned pot for one moment, if you think just briefly about the number of people actively engaged in forums, blog comment sections, and social media sites then I suspect it would barely make four figures.
OK, so we make claims about the huge numbers of ‘visitors’ and ‘hits’ that occur, but seriously, look at the names. Even if everybody posted under just one moniker, and don’t forget I see those ip addresses you schizophrenics, I doubt the number would exceed your typical League Two gate. A meeting of a respected organisation draws a hundred people and becomes television news. Arsenal fans are in revolt, the media gleefully spout as they too whip up their traffic.
Even the protest that materialised last season, by the organisers’ own admission, only saw a few hundred people at best take to the streets. Don’t misinterpret what I am saying for your own ends. This is not my attempt at belittling the extent of the support for the seriously aggrieved. There must be amongst the tens of thousands or more who are not inclined to frenzied typing and angry protest a fair proportion who would share the view that Arsenal are in a cycle of underinvestment in the football side of the business, leading to continued failure to turn all of the promise of a bright future into achievement.
That disappointment is held in though, presumably because the silent mass just want to get to the next game and for things to be better. Never more so than this week. For all that the last seven days have produced possibly the worst feelings some of us have experienced in the Arsene Wenger era, the next week could yet turn into the sweetest we have experienced for some time. Victory over the Marshmen would put a lid, albeit temporarily, on the simmering discontent. As I have said before, this is as important a North London derby as we have faced since, arguably, 2004.
Defeat will feed the belief that we are witnessing the cruel end-game of the greatest manager in this club’s history. Victory will provoke more a relief that there is some hope of snatching something from the embers of this worst season of Arsene’s period of tenure. A few will take their turn to crow online and wind-up fellow Gooners in the process, and the silent majority will do the important stuff, ripping into the neighbours in their workplaces and pubs, celebrating the upper hand for a few sweet days.
Please, please, let it be the latter. It really isn’t very long since we KNEW it would be.

*Cartwheels around the bar before anyone else can see* *Ok, he roly-poly’s around the bar before anyone else can see* π
Now time to read the post π
Drinking on your own Wind?
Bad habit for one so young π
Now to read…..
Schizophrenic?
Played ‘holic – may it be a sweet week
top five, nice. well in, wind. ‘holic, nice tribute to dear etta, too, RIP. given all the crap that’s been in the meeja this week about the squad, it’s most instructive to recognize the tyranny of the minority in the online world. regardless of schizos.
in the previous drinks nygunner had some interesting things to say about regulars shouting down dissent. i’ve been deep inside before, on a los angeles lakers board a decade or more ago, and have had the same “clique” and “not allowing dissent” thrown at me from then. i realized it seems to come from people actually *expecting* that their voice, at all times, is on equal footing with everyone else’s. but that’s not the case, at a pub or a party or in church…so why should it be anywhere else? rights are earned, attention given to those with whom we choose to interact. if folk don’t like it, head to another party, make one of your own, or…find another solution. complaints should go into the box, to be read or not at management’s leisure.
Drrrrrrrrink.
5-0 for the reserves.
Benayoun with the 5th. Old head scored.
Plus Afobe, but he came on after 30 (for a possibly injured Chamakh) and went after 73 so not sure how fit he really is.
Lonestar, I have replied. Top man! π
Problems with your maths, scruz? π
wrote too long…damn.
‘Holic, that post was certainly food for thought. I am trying desperately (and failing miserably!) to treat the game on Sunday as just any other game but this is not just another game – but actually not particularly because we’re playing Spurs, it is more that after this past week we really, really need something positive.
Just as well you put that smiley in, Ollie. πΏ
Nice post Holic . Here’s to beating the Spuds .
lol, ollie…sometimes my math does suck, sometimes it’s because i’m long-winded…i think this is the latter. of course, reading *before* posting (*cough*zico*cough*) might make it easier, too.
Sorry scruz,
I just wanted to pass on wisdom to young Hurricane about drinking on his own π
ah, heck, no worries. the breezy one must be dissuaded from self-assisting, even early in the game.
Napoli just went 3-1 up, by the way. Sideshow Bob and our previously proposed saviour Cahill are, shall we say, not very good.
Boo Holic for not the letting the last set of drinks run to 700….(0;
Dr Feelgood, you called?
Cesc Fabregas presenting a Brit ? Wtf ?
tabs@20: I think he wants to come back home where he really belongs again…
Seriously, tabs? :s
Do you think the BarΓ§a fans will take it as the equivalent of going to watch a Grand Prix in Barcelona while at Arsenal? π
Schizophrenic bastard at 19, I see π
heh Andy Gorams.
There should be a game of ‘Who’s Andy Goram?’ for each Andy Goram post.
I do realise that ‘Who’s Andy Goram?’ is a big question though.
Lars – he just can’t stay away π
Ollie – π yep seriously .
it’s easy, ollie. one plays football, one plays cricket.
heh @ scruz
Nice post, ‘Holic, and an elegant response to the to and fro’ in the bar in recent days. I read this in an essay on silence. It seems apt:
“In a sense, we get the noise we deserve. The danger is that a society that is increasingly interrupted and fragmented by noise itself becomes discontinuous and splintered. That is the alchemy of prattle. We no longer can hear ourselves or hear each other.”
A quiet pint for anyone who’d like to join me.
What zico said at 28.
here’s to you, ned. turn off the tv, de-ring the cellphone, make the music the sounds of the day, and contemplate the dark amber fluid slowly changing locations from glass to belly.
And nice one Ned.
Cheers Ned.
And cheers NY Gooner. Hope you are reading this.
I suspect there are more NY Gooners than mes.
Holic,
Great choice of song.
Is that even mathematically possible, AG?
Zico @ 3/15, on par with talking to myself I would say Dr Z π Or would that be a bogey? π
Scruz @ 6/16, thanks mate, but I haven’t been tempted to self-assist since October, I’ve got patients that would go off the deep end if I succumbed to the dark side of the lurk 8)
Lars @ 17, I actually enjoyed that game π Napoli’s 1st two goals were excellent, missed the 3rd sadly, pancakes with my older sister, no regrets π #lemon&sugar
tabs @ 20, his performance was pretty poor, Nicole Scherinzger took all the limelight π
GT@18: I kindly refer you to the previous post number 700. I may be time challenged lately but I pick my moments!
And well said @ 6 Scruz π
No worries GT @ 18, the Hurricane always gets his goal ^^ #1
Wind, I only saw the last few minutes of the first half and the whole of the second but it certainly was an entertaining game. Napoli really should have scored at least two more, but Chelsea are still very much in it.
Whatever else we may disagree on, we can all agree that we need to give those LWCs a good seeing to on Sunday.
Anything else is a side-show.
Right, Bob?
Lars @ 40, Ca$hley saved Chelsea’s ass with a goal line 2 footed clearance in the final moments of regulation time, that would of been the nail in the coffin, considering Chelsea’s home record this season π
Zico @ 41, heh! π
I have to applaud your stoppage time Century @ 700 Geoff, I know the difficulties of going for goal on limited time π
Just saw all 3 Napoli goals, but like with Kevin-Prince Boateng’s, the first was the best.
Thanks NB1.
Why is zico talking to someone with square pants?
Well said Mr Holic. Am flying in for what is shamefully my first NLD. I am praying it goes our way but regardless I won’t be dissenting. Of the matches I’ve been to this year I have heard very few grumbles. Seems to me there’s a certain stoic support from those great guys and gals who go every week.
‘holic, z is a big boy, and if nothing else his being an uncle means everything is ok….
but he’s right. savage the bunts.
heh Holic, I’ll talk to anyone – you of all people should know that π
Good post Holic,Big big Game this one,not only in terms of who they are,but i fear that this result going against us will have horrible effects between our own suport, long may that not happen,A win will put us in good stead for the much sort 4th place,Cmon the Arsenal.
Well in for the 700 in the previous drinks, Geoff. You are the inverse Martin Peters. Just hope FA doesn’t launch an inquiry into whether the ref had already blown his whistle…
Noel73 @ 46, no shame man, this season contains my first 4 games watching the Arsenal, and I’m 17 years old living 30 mins away by Tube and 1 hour 10 mins by bus! (Although admittedly I live in South London, and did not know of these things until September last year π³ )
Its not about how long it takes you to get there man, its about the journey, am I right? I could of got tickets how ‘Holic did for the NLD, but I didn’t have Faith in my Red Membership X_X
Hopefully next year, as I’m probably not even going to get to watch the match, gonna be somewhere in Dorset, God knows where on a Biology Trip hopefully. They’ve got a bar with a TV & Football, but I’m not holding out hope :'(
Cheers Wind and i agree its all about the journey and the friends you make along the way. Bizzarely tickets still available from Exchange today
The general tone and perspective of the bar reflects the owner. I just donβt see any problem with that as it is a natural evolution of any social gathering real or cyber. Those that come on here and are civil about their arguments are generally treated with the same civility (there are of course always exceptions usually based on misunderstandings). Those that come on here spouting personal insults or just take a generally belligerent tone in their arguments get the similar level of belligerence in response or most likely the boot.
Also what type of person that goes into a bar knowing they disagree with most of the regulars there? One that is clearly looking for an argument regardless even if it is a civil argument. Nothing wrong with arguments just donβt cry when people that frequent the establishment donβt see things your way. I for one come here to share in the joy of Arsenal victories and just as importantly commiserate over losses in a place where I always feel like there is perspective, or at least a perspective I agree with. If I went to LeGrove after every loss and tried to argue with the regulars there it wouldnβt make me feel any better about the club I support. So I donβt go there anymore.
Well said Bearded, can’t fault your 53, logical and reasonable at every point.
It’s not worth getting upset about any more. At least not days, or even mere hours, after the event. Ranting in the heat of the moment is fine, if you want to (and I do) but having been one of those raging nutters who go on about things relentlessley for months myself, I no longer see the point. Maybe the passion is gone now and won’t come back until the next chapter…
Besides, I get far more out of watching a local UCL team, average gate about 100, than I do out of watching Arsenal thesedays. A lovely 4-1 cup win tonight π
Any reserves highlights anywhare? //ΰΉΰΈΰΉΰΈΰΈ§ΰΉΰΈ°
Holic, Hope springs eternal here. Our love for Arsenal shall never waiver. When the Wolves lost their last game, their fans booed them off the pitch. Made me feel pretty sad. Why can’t people see it isn’t always about winning, as long as you give it your very best.
Cheers Bearded. You understand.
Ricey, you know I know a fair few who share your feelings. You know I understand what they mean more than those who come here to flame me because generally I am inclined to be more optimistic.
It isn’t the same, and if that is a problem for an individual then that is fine. I wouldn’t go if I didn’t still get the same emotionally as ever I did. Luckily I started supporting when those emotions were shit, so even today I am still hooked.
‘Holic: we may be blessed to be relics from the days when football was still a game, not a media business.
Thanks nurse.
Love for Arsenal will never die indeed, but I understand those who may not see eye to eye with temporary custodians of our heritage.
Trying to hold out an olive branch or two here. Any ire this week should be directed at the other end of Seven Sisters, not inwards.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17095045
solidarity cant be much to ask in a lead up to the LWC’s
Cheers Holic. Thank you for this fine establishment and F*** off you Spurs.
Yes Sir Holic. I’m planning to serve some lasagna to the Spurs lads prematch, with Harry getting an extra helping. BTW, when Arsenal play their very best, they usually win. Deep breath Holic, it will be ok. Wild flowers for the Management, please!
MUST BEAT SPUDS !!!!!!!! And hi, im new to this blog π got it off arseblog and their both great.
nz,
We don’t use the y word here.
please don’t.
Welcome Mr Gooner.
Prefer LWC’s to Spuds. If you read Arseblog you’ll know the significance.
Holic sorry didnt know,I saw today elsewhere the figure of 48 players when we moved from Highbury as to now 78 payed pro’s today, got me thinking after the news that Arsh and co played for the reserves today,is there any thought to with higher player numbers the squad players that once got playing time in the reserves no longer do,i heard that today was a rear exception in the number of bench players actually playing reserve footy, would seem silly to have players not playing how do you regain their confidence or have them pushing for places with performances?
Good stuff ‘Holic, and Bearded.
Some are a bit worried, to say the least, that it’s Sp*rs on Sunday. Personally, I think it’s the best game we could possibly have had. If the players can’t re-motivate themselves for this one, then there really is no hope.
Importantly, a game against that lot should get the crowd going too. For a lesser game the atmosphere may well have been a lot less positive, which would not have helped the team at all.
Bac sounds well motivated to deal with Bay-aalll. Lets hope many of the others feel the same way.
Zico – Financial Foreplay, π
I know that im going to sound like an idiot *duuuuuh* but what does lwc stand for?
Lilywhite Chaps, if you are easily offended π
Evening Trev. It is only a good game if we win this one. Can’t believe before this season we wouldn’t have doubted we were going to stick it to them again.
The betting as the game draws nearer will be fascinating. Tonight we are 6/4 against.
To beat the LWC’s at home.
When was the last time that happened? Certainly not in this century…
Well written piece thanks. Bearded gooner you have some very valid arguments there. I too stopped chatting over at the LeGrove and other blogs who like to see things from negative perspective. I don’t like arguments for the sake of them, I want to argue with people who appreciate facts and evidence to support their theory. What happens in many Arsenal fan sites or blogs is that people think if Arsenal follow their crazy ideas it’d be successful. Besides, no matter how severe your disagreements with me I don’t talk to people who take every opportunity to belittle the achievements of our manager and the fact that he stayed with when the ships were down.
mr. gooner, that’d be “lily-white bunts”, in pythonese. or perhaps “lally-what-kants”, if you have a strange accent.
Hey ‘Holic.
Nice sentiments. Hope the management is making good progress.
Hoping we can all stand together against the LWCs on Sunday,
COYRs.
Re: The goal scored by Geoff in the last drinks @700, it was a little like the goals scored by Rooney in the 97th minute at Old Trafford, a little bit assisted by the referee and a lot late. π
Holic Amen to stuffing the LWCs on Sunday.
I don’t know how representative we are of all Arsenal fans. The ones I know don’t generally post on blogs, however, all the ones I know read them and sure ain’t been happy for a while. So I don’t think we are unrepresentative.
I would dispute your assessment of Arsene as the greatest manager in the Club’s history. My vote would go for Chapman given where the club were when he arrived (no trophies ever won) and the legacy he left at the time of his premature death; a side that won 5 titles and 2 FA Cups in the 30’s! For me Wenger would be a good second.
Hahahaha thanks scruz and ‘holic ill use that frim now on π
Evening bath. I understand we will not have the undoubted pleasure of your company on Sunday.
That is a real shame.
I will have to buy my own malt π
Crikey , Holic’s post @67 made me google Spuds . I honestly had no idea . I’ve been labouring under the misapprehension that it was some sort of potato-head reference !! LWC’s for me from now on .
Great stuff Bearded .
Evening ‘Holic. Yes, second favourites against the LWC’s at home can’t have happened for a looong time.
Actually, I like your @58. There’s been talk of managing expectations here recently. I suppose it’s true that some of us had them well and truly managed a long time ago, and it does seem to make it easier to stick with things now, than it is for those who have only really ever known success.
Hi Tabs, mail returned π
Geoff, great bit of goal-hanging for your ‘700’, after the trojan efforts of so many others in the build up – not me, i’d add π
Evening/morning Gents. How goes it?
Dear Stan’ll Fix It
Please, please, please, please, please and with a cherry on top, can you fix it for me to win this game? This will be my 3rd consecutive NLD, so I think it’s high time we added a win to the last two results of draw and lose.
I promise to shout loudly, confiscate any black liners that I find and throttle anyone that I hear booing.
Love from Edwin Storey, aged 47 years and 2 months.
Excellent post ‘holic and a call for unity is due and overdue. Agree with Bearded @63.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
F*** off you Spurs.
Then do it again, all day and the next.
Evening TS. Time to retire for me. Busy day for me, and haven’t you got a railway to run ?
‘Holic @ 8 – much obliged, sir…
Back in the last session, I dared to d’oh and proffered that I like our chances to do ACM at home (and beat them by a large enough margin to erase the goal deficit).
Well I am here to up the ante… we are going to thrash the Spud..er, LW…er, why can’t we call them Spunks (definitely no confusion with potatoes, that – and still quite fitting to describe the whole lot of them, I think).
We are going to beat them Spunks like they stole something. We are gonna giving them Spunks a hiding, a caning, a beat down, a … well you get me point.
We’d better.
Please, Lord.
Spunks, heh!
BMBD
Trev, if only from personal experience, I would say that you still have a few good years left in you π
PS: I can’t rebuild a train without resources. Now where have I heard a line (heh!) like that before….?
Lonestar @ #86
Keep it simple. They are the scum. LWC also agreeable π
It looks like TS has already consumed one or two, if you ask me. π
TS –
Well, we ALL know they are the scum… hell, THEY know they are the scum.
LWC’s seems too ceremonial for the scum. My case for the “Spunks”:
(1) well, we ALL know what spunk is (and I’m not talking about chutzpah),
(2) it rhymes with skunk, and
(3) did I mention that we ALL know what spunk is? π
But I will not joust at windmills. I can go with LWCs (unless you really want to use the “Spunks”); just understand if I regress every now and again and use my new favorite term…
BMBD
8ball, unfortunately I am sober.
Lonestar, ’tis your perogative of course.
LWCs, the scum, Rottenham, Middlesex Marshmen, noisy neighbours, that lot, inhabitors of Looting Town, c*nts, cocks, wrong’uns, etc., etc.
I just wanna see Awwy go to TWITCHCON 10 on Sunday.
Amen, TS π
From your lips to God’s ears…
BMBD
“what do you think about tottenham?”
lol@ts…twitchcon 10…snort.
Re: TS @91: Please pardon the error, my esteemed and currently sober friend. I must have been thinking of me. π
Noel73 @ 46. Me too! First NLD. At least I’m not the only one.
Only downside is no drinking for me though π Flying back that evening, then got to drive home! Oh well cant expect everything to go my way!
BT8BBGFG @ 84. That post really spoke to me! π
Twitchcon 10 is imminent. IMMINENT, I tell you!!!!!!!!
Back heels it…………..
In the final third…….
Get in there
Good assist Atotxa…. thanks……
tsk tsk. self-assisting. i don’t think that’s glory you’re covered in…:)
Re: Atotxa @96, Where I used to come from they spelled that Atocha. π But I’m glad we’re agreed on one thing: F*** off you Spurs!
*Guide for the uninitiated: *** = uck.
Bit of a trequartista me! π
Scruz @102 Good strikers need to be a bit greedy…
My best guess of your meaning, Atotxa, is you are 3/4 Madrid and 1/4 Basque?
wu, greedy strikers better be good…:)
BBT8,
Sorry, brain bit slow on the atocha thing. Being staring at an autocad drawing for the last 6 hours. Brains kind of gone to mush! But even with that I’m still infinitely more intelligent than an average spurs fan! π
Actually I’m Irish, but your sort of on the right track. Spent a lot of holidays in San Sebastian as a kid. Had (still have to a certain extent) a soft spot for the local team Real Sociedad. Atotxa was there old stadium. Somehow it made to my user name!
that a yalla fella…no good trying to talk your way out of it…take it like a man WU (0;
Atotxa, I was an exchange student in Madrid in 1981, the year Real Sociedad won the league. Cheers!
BTW, The three games I attended that Spring were:
Atletico Madrid v Real Betis
Real Madrid v Barcelona
Rayo Vallecano v Barcelona
Best player I saw that year: Bernd Schuster
Good read Holic but why the introspection? I hope it wasn’t the ny gooner that set you off? Bearded Gooner had it about right. We all know that you are the fairest of Landlords and those of us who likes to drink here regularly learn that good manners makes for wonderful discussion. I think that many more view this site than comment in the drinks – it took me several months.
I do agree, however, that supporters from our era – who have endured many painful times have a certain patience (or maybe its conviction) that things will get better in the end…and then of course it will get worst…before it gets better again. In other words its just the cycle of life.
I love this blog. I am not ashamed to say. The chaps here are the funniest set of Gooners to be found anywhere. I actually wake up looking forward to seeing what the crazies have been up to while I have been asleep! I think that you have a lot to do with that mate…Remember all you are really obliged to do is satisfy your regulars and they will come back again & again. And when that happens we create a community..thats no mean feat on the otherwise sterile world wide web..
Roll on Sunday…I want us to hand them their balls in a bag as they leave the Emirates…
Great performances by the reserves last night. Hopefully the goalscorersβ have had their confidence boosted a little bit. Anyone care to fill me in on the performance of Corporal Jenkinson?
By the way, looking at all of those historical kit links got me thinking, are we so pony because we look like jockeys in this seasonβs away kit?
Anyway, I want to witness a culling on Sunday. Plucked and boiled I want those cocks. Anyone care to join me in a song?
When I was just a little boy,
I asked my mother, βWhat will I be?
Will I be Arsenal? Will I be Spurs?β
Hereβs what she said to me,
βWASH YOUR MOUTH OUT SON,
AND FETCH YOUR FATHERβS GUN,
AND SHOOT SOME TOTTENHAM SCUM,
QUE SERA, SERA.β
Finally, GT, how come your emoticons are always facing the wrong way mate? ; )
Which way is the wrong way CoR?
When you write (0; is it supposed to be ;D ?
Not trying to be a dick or anything but I don’t usually see emoticons with the eyes on the right so I was wondering why you type them that way…(^_^;)γ
No its suppose to be (0;
I like stubby noses and I don’t follow internet convention..seen as I was alive long before the present “conforming to convention” era..
Seen?
From the sublime to the ridiculous. We begin by discussing the demolition of Tottenham, only to get sidetracked by emoticons??? Count me in for a π and a few (())00’s.
You nonconformist you, inventing your own emoticons like it’s nobody’s business! I’ll keep that in mind next time I read your comments dreadie οΌββ½βοΌ
Like that LWC song?
8th ball: CoR is my younger brother (in spirit) but he like to take the piss (0;…Love that song too btw…just sorta trips off the tongue..
GT, CoR I’m off to dreamland but have this to say first: FOYS. π
Sleep not working out so far so a quick scan of the headlines brings up Bendtner’s sentencing news:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-17115011
Sleep is overrated. That is, if you don’t care about preserving your memory, health and ability to perform athletically π
Thanks for the article 8Ball, I notice they say “he has been absolutely no trouble to anybody.” I suppose that includes opposition defences…
I’ll get me coat.
Poetry:
Roll on Sunday, I want to hand them their balls in a bag as they leave the Emirates
Morning boys & girls,
Cannons @ #113 – It’s a bit liberal (small ‘l’) but we definitely approve of that song. Then again, I do have a pathological hatred of all things lillywhite.
8ball, Lonestar, scruz – Appreciate the appreciation π
Dr.z @ #124 – I want Szcz to try and break Monkey Boy in two again and then I want him to wink at the fans (again) when he’s done it. How else are we going to stop the simian swinging through our defence and hurling his own poo at our goal?
Early morning liveners for all who desire them please Mr. Barkeeps.
Scruz @ 102, heh π
GT @ 112, π
CoR @ 123, hehe, my eyes burn from deprivation π
LO
Feelgood from prev drinks,
Many thnks for sheeting the blame home to me for your reckless
profligacy with the HT cash reserves.
No wonder you have resigned.!!
I have discussed your behaviour with April, who informs me that you have probably been ‘ handled ‘ by every one of her Angels, over the past few weeks.
April herself is the only one who has refused your entreaties,as she has a phobia about men in Skirts.
I hope your restless spirit will be happy in ‘ Retirement ‘.
Although i am not holding my breath.
Steve T from previous drinks,
April has asked me to inform you that she has never been a ‘Tom’,
nor has she ever been a ‘ Harry ‘.
Although she does admit to being the very best at extracting the maximum from the one in the middle.!!
Indeed so popular have her Angels become, she has now had to train up some Dwarf Angels to accomadate the vertically challenged among us.!!
There is no end to her entrepeneurial spirit.
As to Sunday’s match,i fear the Sunderland debacle may have seen off the Diehards among us,so that only leaves the Mentally Unhinged for the HT trip to the Emirates.
Bearing in mind the Opposition on Sunday, that seems entirely appropriate.!!
It’s the first HT trip for the new CEO,let’s pray he is up to the task.
Cheers
The Sweeper
Heh, Lansbury’s found his perfect position:
http://www.arsenal.com/news/reserves-news/loan-watch-lansbury-keeps-clean-sheet
Afternoon All ,
Trev @82 – Sorry to have missed you last night , but the revelation that the word “Spud” was not potato inspired had me hitting the hay . Cheers for the mail and have replied .
TS @83 – Heh π Never too old for dreams to come true . Big big day for Edwin on Sunday . It is of course a results driven business , and the knives will be out if The Happy Train patrons don’t go home singin’ and dancin’ . Can the Professor get us back on the right track ? π
8Ball , Lonestar , Canons , TS , Scruz and GT – Excellent anti-LWC sentiment . If we’re talking songs , I will of course be singing my “Liar Liar” song , directly aimed at the Twitchy one . It has yet to take off inasmuch as nobody else joins in . However these things take time . I have only been singing it since 2001 and the appointment of Glen Twaddle , so I remain hopeful ! π
Clive @128 π π . I’m off hinge-hunting !
By the by , I must register a complaint vis-a-vis the no show of Tiffany October last weekend . Having answered all your questions , including some of a deeply personal nature , (teeth , genitalia , physical handicaps etc) , I was then met with a wall of silence and ultimately a failure on her part to even make the trip . Took me right back to being dumped by Anne Mcginty outside Enfield Cinema at the age of 13 , and that took years of therapy and psychoanalysis to recover from . Travelling back from Sunderland with only a 1923 Edition of Health and Efficiency for company is no way to travel . Are your pimping abilities as good as you say they are ???
As regards the “Liar, Liar” song, I’m sure the Bouncers will not take a dim view if you get everyone up on the tables – it’s just solo attention seekers that concern them. π
It was always about me me me Dr Z π
If two people end up on the table just say you are me, and, er, …
me.
heh π
haha Andy Goram.
You know what’s sad about sunday’s early kick-off?
Should we lose, the most entertaining part of the day will likely be the shortest.
I think it’s the second time (ever?) I’m not expecting us to win a game, after Man U away early in the season.
*rushes towards HT’S MC*
Good day Holic and holics. In keeping with the ambitious theme our barkeep has set forth, here are my thoughts. Nothing is quite so stimulating for the mind and soul as some really meaty intellectual jousting. So anyone out there with an opposing view, please bring it on! Just keep in mind we are only human, with all the foibles that are inherant in our species.
‘Intellectual jousting’ ?
F**k me, can’t we just stick to old-school punch-ups? π
Fuck me, Cloud Nine on Radio 2 now. What a track. It’s an omen for Sunday. Temptationtastic.
I know you.
Hey Ollie,Lol. The other day you mentioned ‘brass bales’. I thought it was a weather report until I googled it. Oh my.
Nurse abb, Speaking of brass bales I did an internet search and found a photo of you in one of your more active moments:
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3034/2685919027_1075355511_o.jpg
Not sure it’s Googlable, ABB. It was a weather report, with adapted name inspired by the wrong end of the Seven Sisters road.
No idea what Google would give you, but since you seem to have been shocked, perhaps I won’t even try.
π I might add. π
Haha, so half of me is revealed π
Will the real Andy Goram please stand up!
If we all adopt the name Andy Goram , it might lessen all the handbags . Peace and harmony restored in one swift measure
Who are these imposters? π
It’s way of the world tabs. The monoculture is upon us. Let’s continue building this digital tower of babel to facilitate easier babbling….
Number 1 is Andy Goram,
Number 2 is Andy Goram,
……..
We all live in an Andy Goram world…..
@ Bearded,
Couldn’t agree more with the first paragraph. My exchange with tabs certainly was belligerent and at times petty. Overall I think he gave as good is he got where the mud slinging was concerned.
In all honesty I probably shouldn’t have called him a Daily Mail reader/writer. I also probably shouldn’t have referred to him as a ‘little Britain’ thinker.
To be balanced he probably shouldn’t have called me illiterate an apologist or a propagandist.
The point of your second paragraph however is where I think perhaps NYG has it right and maybe a few on here have it wrong.
Whilst I often come to this bar very rarely do I speak. I order my drink, read the posts and watch the locals in the corner discuss the thing we ALL came to the bar for. Some things I agree with (mainly Steve T) some things I don’t.
Now I know my views on Usmanov are not widely appreciated on this forum having had discussions before with Holic and Lars. I don’t think however that should stop me airing my view or saying my piece if the topic comes up. I also don’t think that means I’m looking for an argument. A debate maybe, argument not necessarily.
I understand my style may have got up the nose of a few of the reulars and I had to defend my position against N7, Andy Goram and Rupert as well as GT earlier in the post. Being told to jog on, not to drink here anymore, by both Trev and tabs (who went a bit further and told me he wished my ‘sort’ nowhere near the club) was more to the point of what NYG was trying to make. I think. Being asked to leave the bar and no longer frequent the club is beyond just arguing/ debating.
The fact that I have been somewhat vindicated by the AST wishing to know the boards view on the rights issue and engaging ‘other’ shareholders means I was right to say something. Right of offer a different point of view. Right to ask the question if some of us were sat too high on the horse and not being objective.
So you see Bearded, even if I disagree with most of the locals in here it shouldn’t stop me dropping in and from time to time taking part in a discussion.
Fortunately I have very think skin and like I said all along, we all want the same thing right?
Glory to The Arsenal.
“….and the scum from The Lane have won fuck all again and Sol Campbell has won the doubbbbbbbble”
What with me having 8 separate diverse personalities an’ all , I would like to propose marriage to Andy Goram .
Hollywood might be interested – a sort of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers brought right up to date for the modern psychoanalytical-savvy age .
I do not however wish to be played by Sally Field this time around .
Sybil @151 – My turn for the computer Sybil .
Sybil @151 and @152 – Stop squabbling you two , the other five will be back soon .

Or perhaps, more Anacin for us single-purpose entity folk. Do they still make Anacin?

8 Ball @ 141 Sorry, I’m watching the pools play. I only wish I looked like her…think I have a girl crush now.
Andy Gorham @ 142 Most excellent, my first hunch was right, then. Google suggested it was bales of mary jane.
sybil @151.
I do.
I mean, we do.
NB1@150
I think you’re being a bit over-sensitive here.
You certainly didn’t have to “defend your position” against me – I just disagreed with you.
I wasn’t rude, I showed respect for your views and I stressed the importance of listening to one another. In fact, one of my two posts in response to you ended “You do make some very fair points about tolerance for the views of others though. I can see why some would want Usmanov in/Dein back”.
I think it’s important that people be able to come on here and express an opinion that’s against the norm. I do, however, reserve the right to disagree with said view.
Your style didn’t get up my nose. I just didn’t agree with what you were saying.
Oh God…
Ok, all together now – HE’S GOT A TWITCH!!
BMBD
NB1 ,
A nice 150 , some of which I agreed with , some of which I didn’t .
I don’t think that another long post from me would at this stage save any purpose other than to open old wounds and bore the rest of the Bar , save to say that I , for my part , regret being drawn into a tit-for-tat shitfest for which I was partially responsible , and for some of the intemperate language that I used .
I may not agree with your views , but I would defend with my dying breath , your right to expound on them , ( perhaps , that might be one of the reasons why I disagree so strongly with the Uzbeki) , and I hope you continue to choose this forum to air them .
My problem was always the “Daily Mail” jibe , given the pejorative subtext to which that label now attaches , and not any difference of opinion that we may have had over our second largest shareholder , given that everybody is entitled to their own view .
So now you know my achilles heel . If that is withdrawn , consider the matter closed . I , for my part withdraw unambiguously the words that I used and which you refer to above .
Yesterday , I offered you a drink . That offer still stands ( on Lars’ tab of course π ) .
We’re gettin’ married in the Mornin’
Ding dong the bells are gonna chime ….
Good man, TaBS!

Hello Lonestar ,
Hope all is well . Apologies if I have got this wrong , but did I see in one skim-reading session a while back that You had moved into camel farming ?
No more Llamas ?? Very sad news if true . No wonder The Happy Train is experiencing turbulent times .
Llamas for ballast is the cry amongst the patrons .
Ah rumbled !
Bearded @53 – you sum up well why this is a great place to come, listen to the ideas, air your views and indulge in intelligent and (largely) insult-free banter. The Guv’nor deserves great credit for setting the tone.
Glenmorangies all round for all ‘Holics and a double for the Guv’nor.
hah tabs
Afternoon holics!
Glasgow Rangers have sold their Arsenal shares to Usmanov, well I never knew that.
and the lil’ russian is going home. π I hope not.
Long day at work. Really tired.
But not too tired to buy everyone a drink!
Rangers owned shares in Arsenal? How many?
Barstewards should have sold em to the AST.
They bought 2 in 1910 when we were skint and then we gave them something like 14 in the thirties as a thankyou.
Now that scot has flogged them for Β£14k each..
Crikey I have just read the LWC’s owned a share too, that was as far as the takeover went. phew!!
‘Holic, I hope the management is making good progress and will soon be back to keeping you in check!
My ‘all day’ Country Music Festival at Wemberlee that starts at 12.30 doesn’t feature Reba Macentire until 21.00 so I’m working on joining the Red Army Choir at THOF before skeeedaddlng out west for a rip snorting shindig with some country folks.
At the moment that shifty fucker will bee looking under the setee for every copper he can find. It’s a lesson to all football clubs – you don’t want to sell out to the ‘wrong sort of person’. Ooops.
Sybil @ 165 –
Aye, ’tis true. Lonestar Farms is out of the llama trade. They are a persnickety lot, llamas. Everything has to be just so.
Of course, that fact doesn’t prevent me from engaging in the odd llama expedition.
I think alpacas might be better ballast for the renovated HT.

Now, now young fella. lovely to see you after all this time, but you should know by now that three things in life are assuredly agnostic. Water, grain, and me π
Thank you bath. Looking forward to seeing you, along with a fair few of this lot, and some Aussie cricket-loving travellers as well.
This could be a wonderful weekend, at least for a while π
and it does slip down nicely even though it’s from the wrong side of the Irish Sea.
*A moving rallying cry that improves everybody’s mood*
Lonestar, Speaking of camels, when you were in New Orleans I hope for your sake you got a chance to visit with the Camel Toe Lady Steppers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKvwcosokWY
Re: Nurse abb @156, That makes two of us. I wonder what she was doing with that gun. Shooting Spuds? I was prepared with a story like you only went into nursing due to your guilty conscience from shooting Spuds in your night job. π
To all concerned,
Fuck you and fuck your bar!
Joking!
Now that’s over with and since the offer is on Lars’ tab, I’ll take a 3litre bottle of Ace as I’ve often seen this being drunk by our noisy neighbours but have never tried it. Is it nice? Infact do they even sell it in Islington?
Lonestar @176 ,
A very wise choice if I might say so . Please note the Gooner rosettes on show . These animals are Arsenal born and bred . They also , I imagine , make handy playmates for little miss Lonestar junior .
http://www.incaalpaca.co.uk/
AST must use all 3 shares to boycott hillwood.
8ball –
Although I did not “knowingly” run into any Camel Toe Lady Steppers when I visited NOLA in December, I did stop by Finn McCool’s. Great place that.
Strange thing about NOLA, everyone on the street seemed to have a blurred face – just like in your video clip! π
NOLA loves the Arsenal. I highly recommend a visit. Here’s a tip: young ladies love to handle the scarf whilst in the jazz clubs… I didn’t do ANY of that myself, mind you.
BMBD
TaBS – Heh!
Dear Mr 8Ball @183 ,
I am very interested in becoming a Camel Toe Lady Stepper . This looks like an exceedingly good career choice . How do I gain entry into this elite Band of sisters ?
How rigorously would they check my credentials ?
Yours toe-tappingly

What is the world coming to
At this rate Ill be desperately trying to find out how many we beat them by, or even more extremely, finding a way to watch the match
Coyr – maybe Ill make an assist before I go
Bl**dy hell all these typos- deffo need a hol

Shimmys up the touchline , and belts the ball right into the oppo’s box …

Yes – well done Lonesome – now I can leave in peace
Thanks, Cognac and Wolfgang…now I can stop lurking and get back to work.
It’s gonna be a long night. Will interest rates EVER rise?
BMBD
Re: Wolfgang @190: At least two options come to mind. You could open up an English band of Camel Toe Lady Steppers (permission probably not required) and/or change the name of your FFL team (would give you a feel of belonging if not fulfilling the dancing quotient involved). I’m sure other ideas will come with time. π
Well in Lonestar , consider my assist the first down payment for your help in my quest to enter the Camel toe sisters . π
Funny how there’s a very sudden and unjustified flurry of short post around centuries and it dies down shortly afterwards.
Pinged it well in Lonestar! π
Well now you are asking LG
If you can arrange an big Interest rise then I might be able to afford membership of Arsenal player, or even a drink on my holiday in Portugal –
talking of a long night tonight the holiday begins with a 2 hour drive, a short hop flight across France then another flight at 0500 tomorrow – talk about an economy holiday ! – they said it was cheap, but only told us about the hop after we’d booked!
Re: Ollie @205: To understand this phenomenon you would need a class in psychology or physics, I believe. π
Nah, Ollie. You’re over thinking it, mate! π
Wolfgang – I’d assist you for free…you sexy beast you.
BMBD
I told you to enjoy your holiday. Now bugger off!!

Just seen on Guardian site Zenit looking to loan AA?
8Ball ,
I think I will have to go for option one . I am too attached to The Speedo Massive to give ’em up , and in any case would fear retribution and reprisals from Lucy Nutcrackerjee and the rest of the feared Gooner Ladyboy Massive if I did so .
Nope , I shall advertise for like minded souls , we shall admire each other’s Camel Toe credentials , and we shall practice , practice , practice …
Today , the Southgate Old People’s Community Centre , tomorrow New Orleans …
Lonestar ,
Flattery will get you everywhere .

Those Russians do talk a lot. Their transfer window is closing very shortly, so it’s not different to what happens near the end of ours.
No way it’s happening. We wouldn’t have played him 90 minutes in the reserves yesterday to loan him a day later.
And long maybe the Speedo Massive wave its stuff. But it may be advisable to give an advance warning to the occupants of the Community Centre. Liability issues, you know. Lonestar could be a help there although I think he is more in tune with Dixie justice. Another hill of beans entirely. π
*Red cheeks emoticon.* 217 should have been me.
How fucking lucky are those two shitty French teams who shouldn’t have been in this round?
Hope the pair stay out of CL places this year though, as is currently the case.
Cunts from Marseille score in the 93rd after an extremely dull game.
We top our group and draw AC Milan; we should have done better against them, but still.
4 days to go.
8 days to go.
Hell yeah.
8ball @217/218 –
Damn those alter egos. It’s hard to keep that shite straight, no?
I’m definitely your man for Dixie justice, street justice, and beach justice, but especially beach justice when chicas like the “good” Nurse ABB are involved… π
I agree with Ollie, no way our little Russian leaves before the summer…then again, nothing would surprise me.
I agree Wolfgang @ 214. Flattery kept Mrs. Lonestar from suing my arse when we first met. Then again, it’s also what got her to marry me in the first place…now where was I going with that?
BMBD
Life is but a series of challenges to be overcome Mr 8Ball . I remember like yesterday those bashful days of yesteryear when I wore conservative swimwear . One must however grasp the nettle , seize the day , and grab your balls by the horns . One glimpse of Mark Spitz in Munich , and I was away , and just look at me now .
OAPs of the community centre – Bring ’em on .
Carpe Diem , Mr 8Ball , Carpe Diem .
I’ll be damned, Lonestar.

Tiffany sends her sincere apologies re last Saturday,
Unfortunately for you she was called away urgently, as her services were required at a very very exclusive Private Club in London, which was hosting 4 ‘ Members ‘ of a Foreign Government who were in Town for the w/end.
Tif’s services are the stuff of Legend in Govt circles, both Home and Abroad and she commands the very highest of fees,so it was not a Gig she could refuse even if she wanted to.
Hopefully if the HT is not derailed after this Sunday’s trip, then there may be another opportunity for you..
If this does happen to occur, you will of course have to submit to the
‘ Dip and Wash’ test,as Tif’s motto since childhood has always been
‘ Cleanliness is next to Godliness’.
Tif may also require you to submit to a ‘Tackle’ weigh in,which is at her discretion once all is revealed.
Cheers

PS How is The Redbreast coming along.??
Excellent , excellent , what a day what a day gennelmen .
Mr Lonestar can wrap up the Dixy legal technicalities whilst from the sounds of it Mr 8Ball can arrange a cheap flight to The Big Easy on the first leg of our World Tour .

Lonestar @ 200/211, well in man, occasionally us young ‘uns due take a break in terms of century hunting π
I leave the last post with glasses flying. I return to this one and it’s a love in. Man up boys. There is a big weekend ahead and Clive the Pimp is in town with a transit full of entertainment.
I fucking loathe and detest Tottenham. I hate the place, the club, their fans and everything connected to the fucking toilet. The place fucking stinks. It must be the only place on the planet that after 3 days of rioting actually looked better. It is a place where even the pigeons fly over upside down because there is nothing worth shitting on.
I don’t want to stuff them at the weekend. I want to beat them with some of the worst decisions in history. I want Ade to score and have it ruled out for offside, even though he is two yards on. I want us to score the winner in the 5th minute of 3 minutes of injury time by RVP punching it it at the far post. I want them to moan and whine like fuck. I want to here them squeal like a pig. I want them to be so pissed off and I want to laugh my socks off at the lot of them.
Horrible fuckers the lot of them.
“Stand up, if you pay your tax,”
Magnificent, Steve T. The pigeons bit had me in stitches π
Steve T, Quite a good one I must say. Will Redknapp stand up or sit down do you think? π
Steve T …. love it..!
Steve T – you’re a legend π
TABs: you are a man among men man!

Did I say that i fucking hate those LWC’s ??????
I hope the whole ground sings “stand up, if you pay your tax.” I hope then for some reason that Harry stands up and then 55,000 all tell him to sit down.
If the stadium announcer does not play The Beatles and Taxman then he is not doing his job. Followed by a bit of Bankrobber by The Clash.

I have no wish to prolong an argument when there are far more interesting things going on over the next few days.
But – there’s always a but – I was pretty amazed to see you have now referenced me twice as having told you to jog on, and go and drink somewhere else.
If you look back, you will see that after you called us ‘ladies’ and said that you had gone to drink somewhere else, I simply said ‘hopefully you have’, as the whole thing had become pretty boring, to be honest.
My own view is described perfectly by Bearded Gooner, to which post you have already alluded.
The more the merrier in here, as far as I’m concerned, so long as the guvnor’s wish is upheld that people are civil to each other.
Through this blog, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of the regulars, and they are a great bunch of lads and true Arsenal supporters.
If someone drops in and begins attacking them unreasonably, it is natural for other regulars to jump to their defence.
You actually told me to ‘get out of Tabs’ arse’ – not altogether pleasant, eh?
I also took NYGooner’s comments on board, and am sorry that anyone calling in here in an appropriate manner should feel that way.
Anyway, I have left you a drink on the bar – a half for now !
TS – another Mr T ? I have an imposter too ?
Lonestar, Since you mention Finn McCool’s in New Orleans I will add that the local juicer where I watched us lose to ACM was the same joint where us saw us lose the Carling Cup final last year so I’m looking for a new place to watch the games in the Twin Cities (not the obvious Minneapolis choice, hopefully.)
8ball –
Good luck on the search, boss. I wish I had a recommendation for the St. Paul area. However the Google search query “pubs in St. Paul, MN” returned several interesting options.
It’s down to you to pick the proper atmosphere. Not that there’s much risk (seeing as how they are scum), but you wouldn’t want to select a LWC stronghold to watch them go down in flames…
BMBD
Lonestar, Following your excellent suggestion I did some Googling too and there do appear to be more candidates out there than I had known about, and I might not even have to go as “far” as St. Paul if I’m lucky.
