Jack Turns It Around
Oct 7th, 2013 by 'holic
A scrappy beginning to the contest should have been a warning of what might have been coming at the Hawthorns. a match that simmered as a result of some ‘interesting’ refereeing developed and to be fair to the Baggies they gave as good as they got. It is easy to see how they got a result at Old Trafford last week.
Berahinoโs deflected effort looked like putting us behind but Wojciech Szczesny made a marvelous recovery to save. Olivier Giroud, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey had chances as Arsenal responded. Wilshere was not having his best half but some of the challenges he was once again subjected to must have been on his mind. The midfield responsible for so much outstanding football this season was in truth misfiring a little, and we can forgive them the odd blip.
Just when it looked as though we would go in level, we were behind. Yacob was not picked up and headed home at the near post. One slack moment at the back had the potential to be costly, and had Anelka taken a great chance at the start of the second-half we would have had a very difficult situation to recover from. At the other end Wilshere was floored by Jones and our old friend Mr Mason turned down a decent shout for a penalty.
Wilshere was starting to dominate, taking greater care with his distribution, driving us forward. Inevitably, it seemed, he grabbed the equaliser, a cracking twenty-five yarder set-up by Tomas Rosicky, just on as a substitute for the limping Ramsey. Chances were traded but we looked the more likely to grab the winner that would have landed the ‘holic pound. Giroud in particular looked to have done it but Myhill recovered and the moment was gone.
There was a second challenge in the box on little Jack, this time from Mulumbu, that you could say you have seen penalties given for less. Laurent Koscielny came close to giving one away at the other end in a nervy finish.
So a draw it was. Enough thankfully to put us back on top of the Premier League. Thirty-one games to go, but we are involved in the race for the title. It’s all we can ask for at this stage. There will be games where we are stuck in third gear for long parts, like this one. Avoid silly defeats though and everything looks much more positive when you look at the overall picture.
All in all a pretty good day out.

Me too
Hammered.
Top 4 is a Trophy ๐
Nice one guv’.
Ofcourse a win would of been the prefered result, but these are the games, ones you are not necasarily the best team in, that we must not lose, that point gained (as I see it) is the difference between going into the break top or spending two weeks under the Mickeys.
Seeing that Jack Wilshere’s goal came from a deflected shot could you call it a Lucky Strike?
Sorrrrrry
Lucky strike is the name of Nicotine Bendtner’s race horse. At least that is what I heard, H2H. ๐
Heh
A win yesterday would have been Kool.
BMBD
Fair outlook on the game Holic it could have gone both ways!
I’m glad it ended in a draw and we certainly didn’t deserve to loose this game anyhow.
Yet another game that we didn’t loose!
Fair comment Guv! it was very important not to lose and I think we all felt pretty positive by the end as Tottenham appear to be reverting to type whilst we ground out a point against a very useful outfit.
Its odd that LJW who showed great character yesterday is not an obvious starter at the moment for us but is the only playmaker England seem to possess.
Nice reward for Gibbs but I worry about that boy getting injured
A discussion from the previous drinks refers :
Not suggesting that Kos should be dropped – I dont think rotation of centre backs is a good idea when it comes to the any of the big three competitions – but our French centre back continually risks conceding penalties in situations when there is no need to.
For this he needs some Bould advice.
RIP Swino.
“Everything looks much more positive when you look at the overall picture”. How true Holic ! Think Jack needed that goal as much as the Arsenal did. Have a feeling he has felt overshadowed by Aaron’s exploits, lately. This should boost his confidence immensely. Mighty proud of Kieran, getting the nod for England, as well. That’s my boy! ๐
A very fair reflection of the game ‘H.
Ttg, I’m with you and H2H on the CB debate, Vermaelen needs to calm down way more than Koscielny needs to do. These days when Vermaelen plays he, as Norcal observed in the previous drinks, always concedes at least three free-kicks per game in dangerous positions close to our box and he also has a tendency to give the away through needless hoofs up field to no one in particular, hopefully they can both sort out their shortcomings before it costs us big time.
P.s. They are not alone in the brain farts department, I can’t think of any Premiership CB I’ve watched this season who hasn’t had one brain fart or two.
Good write up ‘Holic, we definitely watched the same game. Some of the refereeing was indeed “interesting”
Fair strike Guv’. Honestly disappointed we didn’t nick it in the end. On a positive note, we proved we’re a team that can challenge for it this season. Thanks Jack, thanks all of you fellas. Let’s keep the faith.
Wolfie to release “stillness in Speedos” just in time for Christmas.,
๐
A fair reflection of the game indeed, ‘holic, but I don’t think Jack did enough to merit the headline. He was dreadful most of the game and his ‘goal’ would probably have missed the left stick if it hadn’t been deflected to just inside the right totalling wrong-footing the keeper. The rest of the game he chose to dribble himself into trouble or have his passes intercepted … while keeping up a constant whining to the ref, with the occasional act of retribution that was bound to be penalised thrown in for good measure. I was disappointed when he was chosen to start ahead of TR7, and the whole first half proved me right. I know Jack gets the treatment regularly, but he still needs to curb his responses and get on with the game. He’s getting a reputation for being a bit of a diver (or at least making the most of every hard tackle) and it’s not helping us. He should study how Messi copes with the problem, while recognising that another Messi he ain’t.
Mind you it wasn’t a good weekend all round. Manly were beaten in the Aussie Rugby League grand final courtesy of a ref with much in common with Lee Mason, and Oskar the dog (the real one) cut his paw on broken glass while out walking (vet’s bill resulting).
On the bright side we’re still top and the interlull will help our walking wounded recover further. Had any two of Santi, Poldi, Ox and Theo been available we would have beaten WBAS comfortable, and they’re not a bad side. I was impressed by Berahino and hope we are watching him.

Wolfie’s always up for a stocking stuffer, Steve T.
Hope the real Otd is OK, Otd.
Agree with you on Jack having to get used to being fouled all the time. His driving style of play means he will always have someone nipping at his heels from behind. It just gets very annoying and the frustration builds up, especially as the fouls are rarely cardable, so they just keep coming.
‘Holic, I applaud your glass half full view of the game. Yet, I can’t shake a nagging feeling that champion teams find a way to win that sort game. And we had chances to do so. That said, in the not so recent past that was the sort of game that we would have found a way to lose. So that at least is progress, no doubt.
A landlord’s half to fill their glasses for anyone in the bar.
I’m back! (First drink from the new Laptop ๐ )
Backdrinking the entire Recent Posts Sidebar up there in one sitting is no mean feat, I’m absolutely starving and have nothing to eat that doesn’t require cooking ๐
Wind, an effort like that demands a liquid diet. One on the bar for you from me.
On Lars’ tab, of course.
Good summary, Holic. Agree with all of that. I was “pulling” hard for the Holic Pound, but……..maybe next time? It’s been on a good run lately. Congratulations.
I watched the match in a nearly empty Irish Pub in Fairfax with only two screaming kids and no commentary for company. I was impressed by the way WBA played us. They’ll beat lesser teams than Arsenal at the Hawthorns if they keep that up. Jack was woeful in the first half and for the first time in my life I hoped we’d see Rosicky in his place at the start of the second. That Woodabine a very bad decision as things turned out and as Jack turned it around.
Good result against a team that would have beaten many on the day. Top of the League and a seat in a car going to Dortmund. Am I complaining?
Disagree with anyone who thinks the shot was going wide. Jack’s shot was going straight down the middle to Myhill, so while it the deflection made it a certain goal it was definitely on target.
The goal came at the right time because our No. 10 was Craven A goal since Aston Villa if I remember correctly.
In terms of getting free kicks, I feel like he should be du Maurier? ๐
*Grabs coat and shuffles over to the jukebox*
My condolences to the real one, OTD. I hope he’s back to his normal self in no time.
If we are to mount a serious title challenge, Vermaelen will have to play a critical role at some point if for nothing else than to give somebody a breather here and there but the most likely thing is an injury to BFG or to Kos at some point along the line. If Vermaelen steps up and does the business that could make all the difference for us by season’s end. Ditto Jenkinson and Monreal but I have a bit more confidence in those two currently.
I’ve been reading excerpts from Harry Redknapp’s book in the Guardian, I’ve quite enjoyed what I’ve read so far.
Another Pires spotting but this time on a different continent.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/robert-pires-in-lagos-pictures
Looks like Bobby had a good time, too bad he was visiting approximately 250miles, on a straight line distance, away from where I’m stationed at the moment, would have great to see him in the flesh.
As for the Jack starting ahead of TR7, according to the reports in czech media in recent two days, Tomas is still not fully fit and recovered from the injury and was not supposed to play at all against WBA.
But it is astonishing how much of a game changer he proves, I am amazed time and time again how much our game speeds up when he plays.
Fine report Guvna. It panned out much as I expected and a draw was a fair result. Credit to LJW for upping his game after his poor first half. We do have to remember that he is still making his way back from a nasty injury and long lay off.
We have still to see the best of TR7 this season but even at 80% he adds vim to our attacking momentum.
Here’s hoping the internationals pass with our travellers intact.
Nothing to disagree with in the report. The slight sense of disappointment I had at the final whistle is long gone and instead I do appreciate the point we got and that we got it through digging in and grinding it out. All credit to WBA for playing really well, both teams had chances to win it so a draw was a fair result in my eyes.
Oskar: the reason Rosicky didn’t start is very simple. His body can’t handle playing 90 minutes (or even 60) twice a week – and he is also not yet fully fit which is why he won’t be in the Czech national team during this interlull.
Ned@21: Yet, I canโt shake a nagging feeling that champion teams find a way to win that sort game.
I see what you mean but that is not just a cliche, it is also a bit of a myth. Every team, even the eventual champions, has a blip here and there. I mean, even The Invincibles drew the odd game against teams they would normally have beaten.
Back to work…
Ah, I see that Eandy said the same thing about Rosicky as I was typing!
A tough, grinding sort of match–one that we would have lost in the past I think.
Directly after the match I felt it was two points lost, but only because I’m in the “winning mentality” frame of mind as of late.
After I’ve had time to reflect, I’m of the mind that it’s a well earned point. The dreadful officiating and serial fouling doesn’t seem to be as effective at causing collapse as it has in the past, so some positives to be taken there.
Jack will find his form again no doubt, he’ll earn the Merit he so deserves.
Regarding Rosicky—that exciting player we signed so long ago is still in there somewhere—it’s just that he’s been in and out for so much of his Arsenal career sometimes I forget to appreciate him. But he remains such a positive forwardy player that makes us dangerous, glad to see his return, let’s hope he can remain injury free for the rest of the year
Lars knows – at least @33, he does. ๐
Morning all,
So, sluggish starts and ultimately good performances from Jack and ‘Holic. ๐
More fine ‘smoking’ jokes above. ๐
Lars seemed to be putting down the foundations and building up to a ‘construction’ pun fest with his “digging in and grinding out” comments.
Better steel ourselves for that then.
Heh iBath. ๐
Have a safe journey back today – unless today was yesterday where you are, or were, and it’s all over already.
If you see what I mean. Or meant. ๐
Thanks Trev. Today is still today. The same but different, as they say here. ๐
Fearing temperature shock.
A cynical thought occurred yesterday regarding Matthieu Flamini.
When the current, oh so boring, Interlull is over – funny how it only seems about three weeks since the last one ended – we really need Matthieu to continue his consistent run of yellow cards.
He seems to be picking up one per game in the Premier League and his total now stands at ‘4’.
On that basis, he really needs one against Naaaarrch on the 19th, which will see him conveniently banned for the game against Crystal Palace. Even without him, we should be able to withstand the swashbuckling runs of Marouane Chamakh, who is yet to gel with his new team mates.
He will then, of course, start with a clean slate as we begin a run of games against all the top teams in November, so that he can kick one or two of them with impunity.
So don’t forget, Matty – if you have reached the last 5 minutes of the game against Naaaarrch without troubling the referee’s note book, take the ball at absolutely any decision given – for or against us – and boot it high into Club Level.
That should avoid any possibility of receiving a card of the wrong hue, and secure your place on the November team sheets.
Well played son ! ๐
Weld Trev, that was unintentional. There were no concrete plans for puns of that sort. I wood not hammer home my points like that if they were not nailed-on (like the stone-wall penalties we were denied).
Nah, screw this punning malarkey!
Heh, Lars. ๐
You see, I saw that coming, and you’ve drilled home a few goodies there, mate.
This one could go on a while, I think. We may need an extension to the bar to get it finished – if everyone’s not plastered.
Have to work now though – mortarfied here, ๐
Arsene and Ramsey got the EPL manager and player of the month awards respectively. Well deserved.
Heh Lars & Trev….no more building puns please, they’re a pane in the glass.
Bath..good journey home. Weather here on the jurassic coast sunny & balmy (20 degrees) but some good Caledonian weather due later in the week with max 12 degrees – best sort those thermals out when you get back.
Good report holic, the baggies are on form at the moment and it’s unrealistic to expect any team to win every game. It’s a point well earned in my book – even the Invincibles had some mediocre performances and draws.
It’s a no brainer Cent….therefore surprising it actually happened ๐
Heh Uply.
Afternoon all.
Building puns?
I’m not getting involved, you can Do It Yourself.
Congratulations to Kieron Gibbs on his elevation to the England squad – to combine a pun with Arsenal ‘news’. Wembley will be packed to the rafters and i’m sure he’ll put in a very gableble performance.
Heh @ H2H. ๐
Uply, the puns are only a pane in the glass when they get too sill-y. ๐
Trev, have you now put us in the frame for window puns? Does that mean it’s curtains for the construction ones?
Indeed Lars,
I was hoping you wouldn’t see through that, but I guess you’re not blind – made a rod for my own back now ! ๐
It’s curtains for you Trev.
Interlulls less boring when you’re sitting top of the shop. Which reminds me, the cockerel’s position is normally top of the shop, house or barn: How unsuitable a symbol for a club like Spurs!!
Well 8 ball
It is also common that he stands on a heap of manure and that picture fits the lot quiet well in both senses ๐
8Ball.
A cock is the perfect symbol for that lot.
Trev @40
That sir, is a master plan.
Talking of spots, just seen Tony Adams wandering around South Molton St on his own looking very confused…
hmm http://news.arseblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/linfordchristietweet0810.jpg might be actually quite correct version of the kit, given the fact that (if I am right) all of the players are sponsored by Puma.. and if you ask me, it looks good enough for me.
NBN @ 23, thanks mate ๐
Eandy @ 57, good point about the kit.
Thanks for the weather report Uply. I will gird my loins. I wonder if I can sneak into Singapore instead?
Baff, remember who you are and what you represent.
12 degrees is Summer ๐
Top report ‘H, cheers mate.
Thought it was a point well earned myself. Didn’t fire on all cylinders and it was all a bit after the Lord Mayor’s Show, but we dug out a point against a pretty decent West Brom side.
First half was pretty poor, Ramsey looked to be having an off day even before he picked up a little bit ankle niggle, whilst Jack had a mare on the other flank. Nor really convinced by either of them out wide, and I did wonder whether playing Arteta and Flamini together in the middle makes us too static. Arteta will obviously need games to be at his best, but at times we were as pedestrian as we had been vibrant on the Tuesday.
That said, West Brom’s goal caught me by surprise a bit. Even though they had built a bit of a head of steam up and the Keeper had made one superb save, I never felt particularly threatened. Decent goal though, so much to think about at HT.
Second half, slow out of the blocks, and it could have easily been two on a couple of occasions. Good job Nic Anelka is still a Gooner at heart. Stupid beard though. You still ain’t getting a free pass for that Nic.
After that I thought we were largely the better side. Our goal was coming. Jack was vastly improved in the second half and deserved his strike. I like to think that perhaps he had had a quick tug on a Marlboro at the interval to concentrate the mind.
Last twenty mins was pretty open and it could have gone either way but I always thought we were the more likely side. Shame that Giroud wasn’t able to take either of the two clearest chances that presented themselves. Shame too that Ref Mason is a cunt.
So a draw then. Not as good as we had hoped beforehand, but a decent point nonetheless.
Stand out for me was Flamini. He was everywhere. He brings an awful lot to the table. Props too to the Keeper and to the Bfg, neither of whom put a foot wrong.
A few pints, a hard fought draw, top of the league, Tottenham getting thumped, and a takeaway curry. Not much to complain about from where I’m sitting.
SteveT @17 – My autobiography, in all good Bookstores in time for Christmas, will be called “Frenzied Rhythm in Speedoes”.
Close, but no cigar ๐
Wolfie 62…… maybe “synchronised swimming in speedoes” could be the follow up ( that’s not follow through!) – there’s a many a more to continue with I’m sure ๐
It will be a series Up ๐
There will also be little Wolfie Dolls as part of the franchise. Accompanying outfits will be the “Speedo Summer Spectacular” and the “Cocktail classy”.
Sounds like a winner Wolfie – make sure you’ve got a good agent. I guess you are already linked in with Sue, Grabbit and Run ๐

It really must be an interlull….
I’m sure Oskar would have thanked all those concerned about his cut paw, but he’s been too busy gnawing at the sock and bandage to think about it. So I’ll thank you for him. Fortunately the cut wasn’t deep enough to require stitching and he’ll be fine in a week or two.
I, otoh, am still smarting over the weekend results and may take longer to recover… ๐

Oskar – Glad to hear Oskar is on the mend.
Morning All.
Morning tabmeister et al,
Are we interlull bored already?
Holic, Interlull Boredom has pretty much set in already. And we’re still ten days away from proper football…
Do not even mention interlull, since boredom is weak word how to describe my condition. Roll on Norwich already!
Morning ‘H.
I think that’s a fair assessment of where I am right now! ๐
The Interlul is the herpes of the football season.
After one particularly nasty dose goes away, it’s just a matter of time before another comes in again, a never ending circle of misery that disrupts your life and theres bugger all you can do about it.
MEH.
Oh
and good morning tp you all.
Sky and BT have now got their fingers out and fucked around with the December fixtures. Everton at home will be a Sunday 4PM, and Chelsea at home at 8PM the day before Xmas eve, so if we are knocked out by Chelsea in the next round of the COCup, we’ll have more than nine full days between ManCity away (which has been moved to 12.45) and that one v Chelsea – and then four games (two of which away to West Ham and Newcastle) in the following nine days.
Don’t even get me started on the Interlull, more than a week to go of people banging on about England, slagging off Uncle Woy and whingeing about how we won’t make it past the quarters.
Speedos take wing, Wolfie. Just be careful of this, though:

Good afternoon all, I didn’t quite wake up in Barcelona but I woke up about 10:30am today feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck, a massive intake of solids means I feel better now but the headache will stay a little longer I guess.

Well in, Trev, and heh @98.
Nursie, I thought the same about ‘arry after reading those excerpts. I will seek out Amy’s piece on Gervinho later.
Great…KOS now out injured (calf)..hope he recovers in time for Norwich.
Kcufing Interlulls are a pain in the arse.
Can’t think there is a single club, manager or fan who looks forward to them one jot.
A pointlessly expanded qualifying competition to reach the corruptly awarded finals, designed to benefit only the top knobs – literally – of a corrupt organisation.
A fortnight out of every month destroys the rhythm of the league season, and who gives a shit ?
Only the fans….
Oh well, carry on then.
Pardon me Nursie for the diversion but I’d like to give one more vote to the Nicky Bendtner look before all doll commentary is closed. ๐
Please do 8Ball.
I wasted a good twelve minutes of my afternoon putting that collection together. ๐
Ha ha 8ball! Whatever! Centy, good on you ๐ BB, just heard that on twitter, argh ๐ Trev, yeah, it’s a right pain in the arse. But what keeps me going is the tantalizing prospect of seeing Theo play with the ethereal Ozil, big humongous sigh ๐

Well in Trev and good news that Oskar is on the mend. Mitzi sends her best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Boerdorm, Trev. Where Afrikaners happen? Then there is Benedorm, where good things happen.
And well in for the ton.
Wolfie, I can only bow to your superior knowledge of errant schoolboys.
Here is my solution to the Eurolull. Run the qualifying competition as a fantasy league, and play only the finals on an actual pitch with actual players.
If we are still in the market for another CB, Zouma, who has been called up to the French squad in Kos’s place, would be well worth a look. Highly rated even though he is still only 18, and can also play RB.
Have I told you all how adorable you are lately. No? Shame on me! Great links in the drinks! Ozil’s comment about driving was precious! Sure Kos will shake off this calf deficiency (hopes not to hear 3 weeks!) H2H, the white wedding dress has my approval ๐ Wind, epic reports will be much easier on your new laptop! Now to rewatch Napoli part 2.
That Kos story way to vague to hit the panic button (yet).

I used to live in Benidorm Ned, a lot of terrible things happen there too. ๐

Glad to hear it Nursie
…..that you approved of the wedding dress, not that we are adorable….
I knew that already. ๐
