Just A Half For Me Please
Nov 19th, 2013 by 'holic
Tuesday night, and the last fixtures of the latest in a long line of painful international breaks. It is hard to pick a point at which my give-a-toss-ometer registered zero in the gaps in between the finals of the Euros and the World Cup.
I followed England quite regularly from the sixties through to the eighties, although at home only. European trips, even then, were reserved for the Arsenal. There were highs, not least of which was winning the big one at Wembley against tonight’s ‘friendly’ opponents. Russian linesmen rock! The 1990 World Cup campaign was largely fun, and Euro ’96 got the nation behind the England team in a way unknown since the World Cup triumph thirty years previously.
Then gradually it stopped being fun, the anticipation diminished. Perhaps it was the fault of those pesky foreigners everybody keeps blaming for everything. Certainly there is a point at which we didn’t have to go and watch the national side to see the best players in the world. For me I think it started with the arrival of Dennis Bergkamp in an Arsenal shirt. Within a very short space of time Arsenal, not England, were winning the World Cup, at least according to an early edition of the Mirror after the French triumph in Arsenal’s second double summer.
Nowadays you can watch many of the top players in world football in the Premier League every weekend, and then go home to watch those plying their trade in Europe and South America live on television. Who needs to pay a small fortune to go and watch two experimental sides clash in a ‘friendly’ international after a series of largely dull qualifying contests?
As I type the game is about to start. The hard of thinking have just booed the German national anthem, Good grief. There is one reason watching England stopped being fun. Less than two minutes in and Per Mertesacker makes his first headed clearance. It dawns on me the only thing I want from this game is for the BFG to emerge unscathed. He is far too important to Arsenal these days.
Two opportunities to get a shot away are not taken by Townsend, and despite the established rivalry between England and Germany the atmosphere is more Norwich at home than Tottenham, if you get my drift. That feeling is amplified by the nature of the German eleven. Thankfully Mesut Ozil is one of those ‘rested’ for the fixture. Thanks for that at least.
The game takes shape. The visitors are not careful enough and surrender the ball cheaply too often. England have the territorial advantage but do not have the guile to open up an organised defence.
At last there is something of note, and it is due to the BFG, denied only by a smart Hart save. He stays up and finishes the resulting corner with a superb header. If I were watching Arsenal going a goal down at home it would be like a blow to the solar plexus. Against England it isn’t. There is nothing.
The half-time whistle signals the limit of my interest. I want to be in my seat, and often out of it, on Saturday. At Arsenal I feel every kick, every header, every perceived injustice, I take every shot, make half the tackles. Tonight none of that emotion is involved. I just want the German skipper to be substituted while he is still fit enough to score a flying header for us on Saturday in a game that means something.
I will get behind England in Brazil, but what on earth is tonight all about? It is time FIFA got the balance between club and international football right.

interesting post, ‘holic.
having not grown up with a national team that was in any way competitive, it wasn’t until the world cup in ’94 here in the usa that i had awareness about national teams (or, really, footie at all).
i watch usa matches with a bit of interest, but just about everything outside of the world cup can be boring. i’d love the usa to win, but doubt it’ll ever happen. i watch england due to my roots, but because of people like cunterry, ashole, etc., i usually feel pleased when they lose.
i just want everyone home for supper with no injuries.
Heh ‘Holic. Thank you for the post. Unfortunately, the BFG stays on, after half time. Hopefully he can come off, and we can equalise/win, and then we can all think again about competitive games, and in particular look forward to Saturday. I look forward to seeing you (all) then.
Succinctly put holic. For someone still relatively nationalistic ( there are still many things this country can be proud of), I find somewhat strange feeling to care not a tot as to the outcome of tonight’s game ( apart from praying our players return un-scathed and relatively un-knackered). You can only feel the real passion when the boys in red & white are on the pitch giving their all.
Conversely just as strange though, the passion does comes through at rugby internationals (the ready flow of alcohol probably assists with this 😉 ).
see, now gibbs and jack on, and i wish they weren’t. please come home safe.
Jackster title, heh.
Cheers, ‘holic.
FIFA think more about the bank balance, as you know 😉
Good stuff, ‘Holic.
I kinda discovered Arsenal through International football Bergkamp’s goal against Argentina in 1998 and King Kanu, a national hero for Nigerians, moving to Arsenal made me pick interest in the team and a few years later when I had to make a concious decision of which Club would have my support forever I discovered the Arsenal had already chosen me subconsciously through the two Legends mentioned above.
I lost interest in my National team about the same time I started watching live Arsenal games regularly but the desire to see all our national teams succeed has recently been re-awakened by the way the success of any of our national teams, no matter the age grade, unites, albeit for a short while, a country constantly divided amongst herself by religion, ethnicity, politics, language e.t.c
So as much as I hate the bad effects of the interlull on our players I believe international games still have a great role to play and as the Guvnor pointed out, FIFA really needs to find the balance between international and club football right.
Can’t watch any of the friendly games but Ronaldo has given an absolute masterclass against the Swedes. He’s practically played Sweden on his own scoring a hat trick in the process.
At Arsenal I feel every kick….
Even though he is full of Guinness and malt…..
Amazing. 😀
Tonight wasn’t just about superfluous friendlies. Crazy game in France, and a great comeback.
Heh z 😉
Zico – yellow card!
But it was quite funny…
BMBD
Charlie @ 9: Could see the game live as here in US the French channel TV5 was showing it. Haven’t seen a French team play with that much passion in a long long time. Glad that Giroud only had to play ten odd minutes and Sagna just a few minutes more and came out unscathed. Giroud almost scored a nice headed goal.
Valbuena and Ribery had excellent games, Pogba and Cabaye and nice moments… it was quite breathtaking stuff…not always quality football but very entertaining.
Poor Ukraine, always failing at the qualifiers.
Always good to have the France team in the World Cup.
Followed the games on Twatter while working. Sounds like at least the game between Ronaldo and Zlatan was entertaining. I am also glad that France finally played as a team. Will be good for Kos not to think he blew le blues.
24 hours and counting.
http://youtu.be/mGF_0AcHaGs
Thank god that’s over. Can’t get excited about international football at all.
Also here in DK – we’ve had local elections today – thank god that’s over too.
Great news for the French – mainly that our trio got very little game time – not only no injuries, but also no exhaustion. And they’ll come back in good spirits.
And Per is back and scoring.
Only 5 days to Real football.
Nail on head, Holic. International football just seems more and more pointless to me as well.
NorCal: Ronaldo was quite brilliant tonight. He scored three and narrowly missed a couple of more chances. He really showed why Ibrahimovic, great player though he is, is a level below the likes of Ronaldo and Messi.
Nice one Maestro.
Cent’s 2nd and 3rd paragraphs speak for me, ashamedly I didn’t even know my country of origin were playing yesterday vs Italy until the game had already started, fair enough we had already qualified for Brazil 2014 at the time so the desire to watch a friendly wasn’t as much as it could have been but when I was younger and more optimistic about these sort of games in general, I kept much better track of when we were playing.
But during the most recent African Cup of Nations, I and my family followed Nigeria’s progress extensively from the first game all the way to the final which we ended up winning and it was a lovely family experience, we had close family friends over who are also Nigerian over and it meant a lot to us, as I’m sure it did to Nigerians all over the globe.
I know there’s a big difference in occasion between a friendly and the final of any competition but if joy and harmony in a country can be generated (after a good result in a friendly) to even an eighth of the levels that they were at in Nigeria after our ACN win in comparison, then International Friendlies still deserve their place on the footballing calendar, but their placement in the calendar should be for the sake of the fans who still care, not for the sake of swelling FIFA’s coffers even more.
Internationals have become merely a tiresome and far too frequent interruption to the league season.
National sides now produce football that is generally way below the standard of the top club sides, who all have many top international players, plus the advantage of playing regularly together.
The biggest turn off for me though was the prospect of a team of largely Mancs and Chavs – we all know who they are – beating the French, or any other national team, featuring our glorious Gunners.
Why wouldn’t you want to see Henry tying Terry in knots and thumping one past Misses Robinson ? Or Paddy skinning Lampard and Gerrard abd setting up Sir Bob.
The international make-up of club sides has destroyed the patriotic fervour for national teams.
Just need FIFA to get the message now, but that would be a real case of turkeys voting for Christmas.
Exactly, ‘holic, ‘friendlis’ summed up in all their pointlessness. But if anyone cares about the result, well it sums up Hodgson to a T. Timid.
Awesome game by Ronaldo, I suggest a cheeky 100mil bid in January. Well, they sold us Özilla so you never know! 🙂
Öskar
Ötd@18. That is just a fantastic idea – much better value than Bitey.
They won’t sell of course but it would show we mean business. The psychological boost to the squad could be amazing.

Very much agree with what Upply and Trev said above. To me, perhaps the most telling reason to take very little interest in the “national team” lies in the Guvnor’s remarks about people booing the German national anthem.
I’ve always felt that the decision over which football team to support was a pretty random one taken early in one’s life and stuck to thereafter come hell or high water[1]. I would have been happy to continue to support England through thick and thin, and probably still am, but it’s really hard to sustain any interest outside competition. That shouldn’t be a surprise really when you think about what it’s like maintaining an interest in the Arsenal during international breaks and the close season. With the national team, there’s really only two three-week periods every four years when you can get properly engaged. The qualifying competitions should be OK, but they’re too spread out to allow excitement – and interest – to build to any reasonable degree.
And then, of course, there are the ‘gentlemen’ of the press. The effort put into not getting wound up by their ‘contributions’ is simply not worth it when attempting to follow England.
Sorry, everyone, a posting that is even longer and more rambling than usual; it’s getting late, I must to bed.
COYG
[1] This sentiment applies only to those living in the UK or other countries with a long football tradition and a strong league. I appreciate that people who start to take an interest in the game only in adulthood may take a more cerebral approach to choosing a team.
It might be worth thinking about how you would feel and behave if the entire Arsenal squad and management were to go to another leading team, a direct rival, and were replaced by their squad and management. I suspect that within a few weeks – if it took that long – I would forget that the Arsenal team had ever played for anyone else and that those in the rival strip had ever played for Arsenal. I consider my attitude to players like Na$ri, van Payme or even that Catalan bloke – it’s more coloured by how good they are, how much playing time they get and how close a rival they are to us than anything else.
Jesus – this was long enough before the postscript. Get a grip. Go to bed. Night all.
Easy, dkg, tongue firmly in cheek here! Although the idea of having Real as our feeder club does have appeal, aye. 🙂

Indecent treatment of sheep somewhere across the atlantic. Horrors. At least I hope they are Southampton sheep.
Cba@ 20: Don’t forget your Wellies, then.
Splendid ‘Hols, that pretty much sums up my thoughts on international football too although the gradual Arsenalisation of England helps me to give at least a small f*ck.
Safe journeys to Norcal, H2H, Lars and his battalion of vikings. Did I forget anyone???
England/Arsenal is being invaded again at the weekend and that’s a great thing!
COYG!
Good post, summed up my feelings exactly. I shopped following England away after San Mariino in 93 and haven’t been to a home game sine Germany in Euro 96
There is no sense of ‘occaision’ watching England now as you rightly point out you can watch the worlds best at the touch of a button.
Growing up watching England you saw the best players our league had to offer. Now I’m being told Andros Townsend is the England future, he carries the same goal threat as Begovic of Stoke!
We just need to accept England are mediocre at best and will be for the foreseeable future
http://www.notanotherarsenalblog.wordpress.com
I followed England more away than home until 1995, when the events of the game away to ROI finally forced me to quit. It was very obvious what was going to happen in build up to game and sure enough it did. At this point pernicious political influence (from followers of many clubs, not just Chelsea) was at its height and it was time to leave what had at times been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I’d had my doubts after seeing the whole of the Rose & Crown in Rimini perform ‘No surrender to the IRA’ in 1990, before trashing the place which was run by the friendliest Italian people imaginable. Nothing has occurred since to tempt me back.
The endemic corruption and rampant over commercialisation of football in general but international football specifically by FIFA/UEFA is hugely distasteful and its impact on the domestic calendar is now approaching joke proportions. Something needs to be done about it.
Like ‘holic I may have some (slight) interest in England’s performance at a major finals like next summer. Other than that for me, you can stick international football where the sun don’t shine.
Holic, I would have written very similar words but not in your beautifully measured style. I used to go to a lot of England games at Wembley with lads from work. From 1973 ( Poland!) to 1978 ish I scarcely missed a match there.
Several reasons conspired to stop me. One was that getting to and from Wembley- especially the latter was such a pain. That has not changed at the new stadium. It was a crass decision driven by the execrable amen Bates to maintain it as the national stadium when it could have been built elsewhere in the country with much better transport links.
Secondly I started to realise that England’s following featured a large number of racist morons. Black players even playing for England received abuse something that never occurred at Highbury. Finally I found it very hard to get excited about players that by and large I hated when they played against Arsenal. That feeling has intensified over the years especially when like Stevie Gerrard they are the most overrated player in English football history. That intensified when they started to give caps away like toffee papers. We spoke about the legend Geordie Armstrong and Peter Simpson for that matter who were never called when people like Jordan Henderson and Fraser Campbell and Raheem Sterling already gave several caps.
I didn’t watch the game but take most satisfaction from how the Arsenal players do. Go BFG!
Fine post maestro.
It’s not just fans of England who have lost interest in their national team after years of commitment. Scots and Welsh friends feel exactly the same way and the time period of the change is about the same – around 2000 – when the talent in the premiership made the national teams look even more pedestrian and Septic Bladder and his football famerlee started getting too big for their boots.
Yeh spot on Holic and Holics above.
I remember watching England go out in the quarters against Argentina – when Mickey Owen ran through the whole team, and Campbell had a perfectly good goal ruled out for a foul on the keeper.
That was the most passionate I’ve felt about them, I was up out of my seat going mad, head full of Kronenbourg 1664, whipped up into a frenzy and shouting my head off.
Nowadays, it’s just…meh. There’s too many players who give me too many reasons to despise them for me to get interested.
‘Ere you lot – you can all just pack in talkin’ about my Johnny like that an’ ‘ow you don’t like ‘im an’ all.
Callin’ ‘im despicable and a racist an’ ll that just because he is !
‘E’s a lovely boy at heart – I’ll ‘ave you know there’s nuffink he wouldn’t lift ahht of a shop for his old mum, and the kindness he shows to all ‘is players and their wives and girlfriends is just beyond belief. Touching, it is, and more besides, ‘e tells me.
And ‘e ‘as the respect to always wear a proper suit and tie whenever ‘e appears in court.
So just lay orff ‘im, youse lot – he ain’t that kind o’ boy.
Nice one guvna.
As a kid it was always exciting when the World Cup came around, a couple of weeks of live football, entire games on the box, featuring players from far away lands with exotic names. The world back then was a much bigger place, the chance that you’d ever heard of, let alone get to see players from these foriegn shores were small at best, those days are gone. The comercialisation and globalisation of the game added with mass media, plus a freedom of movement (there are still certain restrictions, but nothing like before) has changed all that.
Just look at our own team, when I first started regularly attending Highbury their would be no players from outside the Home Nations and Eire, the team would have looked something like this;
1 Jennings (N.Irl)
2 Rice (N.Irl)
3 Nelson (N.Irl)
4 Price (Eng)
5 O’Leary (RoI)
6 Young (Sco)
7 Brady (RoI)
8 Sunderland (Eng)
9
VanStapleton (RoI)10 Gatting (Eng)
11 Rix (Eng)
Paul Davies made his debut a few years later as the first player of colour, but he too was English.
Now think of how many different nationalities we’ve had doning the glorious Red and White since then.
The best players in the world come to ply their trade in the PL, the ones that don’t you can watch in the CL, or even La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, whatever takes your fancy.
I have a theorey (bare with me) that followers of the International game are supporters of the lower league teams, the ones that like to go watch footy in the flesh, but don’t get the chance to see the best players at their club of choice. Dont believe me? Well, Next time England are playing, check out the Union Jacks/St Georges Flags, they’re all brandising club names like Northampton, Buxton, Barnsley, Peterborough and Tottenham, all crap. 🙂
Hey Mrs T’

Hull, city of culture ?
Must be all the nasty things they have there growing in dishes.
Spot on zico @45
When Glasgow was chosen, I thought they were nuts but then there was Rennie McIntosh, the Burrell collection, Kelvingrove Gallery, the industrial archaeology of the Clyde Shipbuilders etc etc.
However the choices since then demonstrate (much like WC venues), it’s a cynical attempt at slum regeneration…..liverpool, Derry and now Hull.
Afternoon bath, trust you’re well.
Surprised Tottenham didn’t get it then.
Holy shit.

ôskar@22 Yeah, I know you were joking, but as the saying goes, “There’s many a true word spoken in jest.”
After all these years snapping up unknowns, I think it would be fun to go bidding for the Ronaldos, Neymars, Falcaos etc of this world (before they get past it of course). It would ruffle a few feathers that need ruffling (or plucking).

There’s a book for you in there, Holic –
The Tollie Brollie Follies – who could resist ?
Oh Gollie!!
With a chapter on Ollie
Funded by Lars’ walley
Maybe I’m the wally. 😮
With your permission Holic; bloody awesome post http://poznaninmypants.com/2013/11/20/hard-out-there-for-a-pundit/ have a read and a laugh gents.
Morning Folks — Holic, you have a remarkable way of capturing the essense of popular opinion — I fully concur with your views re England ( the team).
My cant-be-arsed-ometer has been set to zero since about 1974.
Also agree with those who have posted claiming that Ingerlund fans contained a large percentage of racist knuckledraggers — I once attended a game in Washington DC in the ’90’s between England and Brazil — on the train down from NYC, a motly collection of Palace and Chelsea “fans” started abusing some black England supporters — I stepped in to schmooze it actually — I was a lot harder then! But it made the train journey and game a pretty nasty experiance — swore id never go again.
Thank fuck the interlull is over.
What about a chapter on the Tollie Brollie Dollies?
That of course would have to include a paragraph on the adventures of Wolfie.
H2H @56, ah but Trev’s are intentional and funny.
BJT’s are unintentional and self-serving – shurely a natchural? 😀

Lars, glad you’re sorta feeling better. But no going for goals at the bar, until you’re all healed!
H2H, I”ve already told NorCal and Wind (on twitter) how excited I am for all of you. Just want you to know how much I hope you enjoy the game and meeting up with all the holics xx
Thanx Nursie. xxx
Oh you’re most welcome, H2H 🙂
Of course, without H2h at the bar during the game, gonna feel mighty weird! 🙁
I’ll check in from the grove at HT. 🙂
Cheers abb!
The Grove? Oh, that Grove, all right 😉
Phew, I though Ollie was going to revoke my posting licence there for a second.
If I’d of said “Le”, I would of handed it in myself. 😉

Hey Fellas! 🙂 My doctor warned me not to have exposure to TV or laptop light, as well as any other type of light (could cause blisters on my face) so I’m trying to be good! Friday, I should be back at the bar MORE! Get ready 😉
I hope you are allowed natural light though, abb. Good luck.
Oh dear abb…..hope you have some good books and a good music collection? Save your artificial light exposure for our match. Good luck.
Get well soon Nursey.
For those who think only c…. play for your national team;

H2H,
I think I dated that stadium for a while in college. Purple. I do still like that color. 😉
Heh H2H @ 91. Fannytastic, mate.
A great location for Snatch of the Day.
Scunthorpe vs Arsenal
Followed by PussySG vs Vodjvagina?
JT’s testimonial.
Dinks a high ball toward the box. (Still on topic)
Bet every match reaches a fantastic climax in that stadium. 😉
Bang – still on topic. 😉
Heh, well in Trev (S.O.T.).
Cheers bath – scored with a crafty lob (S.O.T). 😉
And well Tabsed, yourself.
Where is Tabs btw ?
Well in Trev.

Apologies to all the ladies, by the way.

Love your #91, H2H, I am reminded of Sauron’s eye in Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy … http://www.tolkien-online.com/images/eyeofsauron.jpg
Not an arena I’d want to play any sort of game in frankly…
Öskar
If they play the final in that Vagina Stadium, will they get Urethra Franklin to sing the national hymen before it starts ?
Or maybe the Black and White Menstruals ? 😉
Heh Trev – multiply orgasmic.
Jack’s ankle injuries, anybody’s for that matter, always make me wonder about today’s kit.
When I used to play (okay, 50 years ago) we wore what would today be laughably heavy-duty boots, but they did have the advantage of offering considerably more foot and ankle protection than today’s slippers. Also our shin pads covered much more of the lower leg than is the fashion now. In fact the bottom end of them virtually disappeared into the top of the boot, whereas today’s much smaller pads cover little more than the upper part of the tibia.
No doubt one of our many doctors can explain the logic of boots and shin pads that leave all of the ankle and half the leg exposed to the Shawcrosses of this world? Cos the frequency of injuries in these areas surprise me not at all.
Öskar
Trev, you’re virgin on misogynaecology and labial to get yourself condomned by womban’s libbers. Pull out before you lose all cuntrol!
Öskar (doggy style)
Trev,
There is no end to vagina puns….. Or sex… Mankind has been putting it out there since the first Big Bang.
Heh to all above. Particularly enjoyed the doggy style. Don’t mind if I do.
It’s a quiet night for the internet numpties, myself included. No doubt it is very different for the jet set on their way or already in London. Have a magnificent time Norcal, H2H and all.
Well I hope this does’nt come about http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/nov/20/arsenal-napoli-closed-doors-champions-league
Although the article does say that AFC are confidant the match will go ahead in normal conditions.I only got my ticket a week ago on the official Arsenal ticket office, although planes and hotels have been booked for weeks and so I and other travelling fans will be properly miffed if it does get played behind closed doors.
A few of my Marseille supporting friends were sat right next to the railings separating the Napoli fans at the Velodrome and were surprised and unimpressed by the level of vitriol(spitting and snarling the whole match) from a team’s supporters who were winning a Champions League match away from home.Strangely hardly any of the Napoli supporters were wearing their colours.
Anyhow we will see what happens.
On a more cheery note for those who don’t live in the south of France,
It’s peeing it down here and cold to boot.
You should come to London washed up. It is definitely not cold and rainy here 😉
Hi Holics I am a regular reader but not posted before.
With regard to 111 Oscar the dog’s comment I am currently working closely with a guy I know who has designed a unique, lightweight, foam-based impact protection pad that allows the wearer to directly attach the protective foam pads onto an under-sock in the desired position and then the match sock is simply slipped on over the top. It is the only product on the market that offers protection to the lower shin, ankle and achilles, all at the same time. The material the pad is made from cross linked foams which have the following important properties: rigid enough to dissipate force, flexible and comfortable to wear, does not effect the players movement.
I play for an 11-a-side team and have been wearing these pads every game which I was surprised at because I don’t like to feel restricted in that area on the leg but the amazing thing about these pads are that you do not feel like you’re wearing them at all yet when an incident occurs to the specific area you know they are doing their job in fully protecting your lower shin and ankles.
Our prototype is currently being trialled by numerous players in the UK and abroad. Maybe LJW would be an ideal candidate for testing!
The product is called Armour Flex and will be out around may 2014 and the site is still being worked on but if anyone wants to know anymore information my email address is patrick.dower@hotmail.co.uk
It’s surprisingly sunny here in the land of low, althoughit is extreamly chilly.
That concludes the International weather report. After a short break more vagina shaped stadium queefs…..eer sorry, quips.
Oskar.
I’ve said here in the past that the flimseyness of todays footwear may very wll be to blame for some of the injuries, especially in the ankle and metartarsal area.
Dat Power.
Sounds like quite the innovation, good luck with that.
More importantly H2H we need to get some forecasts for Saturday. And I’m not talking about the weather… or the football…
I forecast a lager started afternoon slowly building to a vodka fueled post match frenzy. Although there should be bursts of whisky in other localised areas.
Lovely H2H. Sounds like a perfect forecast for a match at the HOF.
Dat Power: sounds interesting, I’ve also noticed how ridiculously small the pads worn by most players today are. They are more for show than anything else, I feel.
Seems I missed a pun-fest last night. I must say most of the jokes were really fanny 😉
Hmm..rumours appearing about West Ham scouting situation around TRs contract with us, I really hope Arsene gives him the extension, last thing I want to see is TR7 sporting another kit in PL.
It is recommended you don’t stand too close to any brollies if you want to avoid whiskey bursts.
Not to mention the showers of Guinness and IPA due to congestion and pressure fronts.
Good calls, Bearded and Bath.
abb, if you stick to the Doctor’s orders you won’t see this but in any case best wishes and hope you get better soon!
Well it certainly will be wet “inside” and no doubt very windy* later in the day. No reference is implied to our young friend of the similar moniker whom I look forward to making an acquaintance of sometime during the course of the day, along with all the other esteemed ‘holics who have travelled near & far.
There will be many groups under Tollie brollies but I hope to find the main one with the following in mind:
A genial gentleman with glasses of Guinness being consumed at pace.
Some Scotsmen shifting doubles of malt whilst complaining at the poor selection.
Various Medical gooners (in white coats), 1 wearing the chains of office of World Punning Champion.
A merkan and a local speaking in a strange london / dutch accent smoking hand made ciggies with an unusual whiff.
A Swedish gentleman walking round with a gigantic wallet strapped to his back.
A meeja whoore dancing on tables – possibly exposing his speedoes with the Robert Pires print.
An Essex gooner wanting more width.
A young student type making copious notes.
A Frenchman complaining that Eurostar are “branleurs”.
Apologies to any I’ve missed out.
I’ll be the elderly bloke looking lost and trying to remember where the fuck am I.
Can’t wait…..oh there’s also a football game to enjoy.
Mega-heh Uply @ 131
Ttg,
🙂 and, Wow! That’s quite the list of things you hope to find.
The media whore in the Speedos will be mightily relieved if he has been able to find the pub ! 🙂
Btw, furthest brolly from Hornsey Road in the extension garden. If Holic has grown a “Mo” just look for Father Christmas. 😉
Sorry Uply,
133 was, of course, a reply to you, not ttg. 🙁
Great list Uply, although I definetly won’t be bringing the home made ciggies through customs, I’m double/triple checking all my pockets and bags as it is. 😎
@131. Sounds like the cast of characters in a mystery novel. A comic one. 🙂
Get well Abb. Maybe you should join the crowd under the brollie?
Holic or others who might know:
I thought I’d stop by the GoonerTerry stone on my way to the Tollie on Saturday, whereabouts is it? I know it’s by the North Bank, but there are hundred of stones there so approximately where in relation to the Tony Adams statue will I find it?
Looks like Southampton game is the place to be this week..*should really finally fix trip to HoF*
Abb,
Just wanted to add to the list of well wishers. You take care – your earlier comment didn’t sound too good, x.
That’s a good question Lars.
I think we should all make a pilgrimage there, plus a visit to Nursies stone for a few pics to send her via twitter or whatever.
Landed in Landan. 😉
All safe and sound. None the worse for wear. That’s a looooooong flight. It didn’t help that we circled Wolverhampton for an hour waiting to get the OK to land.
By the way I noticed just a few HUNDRED bookmakers on the way to the hotel. Anyone know if us “fariners” are allowed to wager in such establishments? Might want to bet the NorCal penny. ;$.
Nice one NorCal.
I’m sure they’ll have no qualms about parting you from your hard earned no matter your race colour or creed 😉
Many thanks for the heads up Trev.
H2H I’m hoping Norcal brought some of Oregon’s finest with his doctors
medics bag – mind you Dr Z may get there first for the Feelgood empire. 😉
Talking of which, I’ve just seen that Dr Norcal has landed. Welcome Norcal, firstly it’s Landan Tarn and secondly our bookies will be more than happy to relieve you of the burden of carrying all those greenbacks around. 🙂
Cheers fellas. Our greenback’s are worth crap these days! But a little wager on the games will add a little extra spice.
NorCal it really is a far cry from Merica. You can even bet IN the HOF if you want. They give you every last opportunity to part with your hard earned penny. I personally suggest you save your wager until after the pre-match festivities. At that point 7-0 to the Arsenal will seem like a downright bargain.
Welcome to the Motherland, NorCal. 🙂
One tip NorCal (not useful in Ladbrooks), if you want to feel remotely human in the morning when you get up try to resist the temptation to sit up to the small hours watching crap television or drinking fine spirits. If you have any Melatonin or Zopiclone, use them at the stroke of 10.00pm.
H2H@141: I have been thinking along the same lines. There is free WiFi at the Tollington so we can do live photographic updates of the evening 🙂
Have fun you gays…I mean, guys. (I miss Santos ;(… )
BMBD
If you were circling Wolverhampton then I’d just check that you landed near the right city 😉
Live updates?
Oh very dear.
Anyone got a decent Brief? 8)
zico @152,
my thoughts too
Wolfie can help you there 😀
I’ll be brief, baff,
Erm, no thanks. 😉
Great to see you have made it Norcal.
Take no notice of bath, he is a colonial 😉
Stay up and watch the cricket on Sky Sports 2. Magnificent entertainment…
Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday.
Zico…live updates, oh dear – best you disable the internet before you leave to avoid being disabled when you return home 😉
I was thinking exactly the same thing Ups….
Maybe if I turn everything into italics….Rox might think it’s foreign….
🙄
Zico, good idea as last time you went into italics, everything was bollixed if I recall. Another idea would be to get it to stick on the shopping channel but on second thoughts an injury upon your return may be the lesser painful option 😉
I’m currently tapping up young Nigerian Defensive midfielder who plays for Lazio, Ogenyi Onazi, through Twitter. He is doing a question and answer session on twitter so I asked him to describe Arsene in one word, his reply? ‘FASCINATING’ and ‘Coach'(yes, he answered the question twice). There have been reports quoting him as saying he could see himself playing for Liverpool so I asked him about that too and he said he never said anything like that to anybody.
So if/when we sign him you know who to give credit to.
He is a crime fighter too http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2442343/Lazio-star-Ogenyi-Onazi-snares-crook-street-chase-Rome.html
But can he stop crime on a dreary February mid-week night fixture at Stoke?
Heh, I bet you he can’t! Not even Superman can.
Good morning Aussies 😉
Still 2 wickets to fall – 450 all out I reckon
*removes tongue from cheek*
Interesting to see Wenger’s injury update.Theo fit, LJW ok, Poldi back in 3 weeks and Ox after Chrustmas but the one that depressed me was Sanogo. After an appalling injury record he has managed about twenty minutes competitive football for us this season. Is he another crock from Auxerre? At least poor Diaby was crocked by the thug Dan Smith. This boy just doesn’t seem fit enough to play the game at this level. Sad for him and very sad and frustrating for us.
Poldi, 3 weeks, The Ox ‘after’ Christmas. So is Easter.
Not exactly great is it ?
Welcome, NorCal.
How’s Birmingham ? 😉
Circling Wolverhampton ???
Bloody TomToms.
Trev
Perceptive as ever and we know what three weeks means in our treatment room!
Could you not weave your own brand of magic there?
Ttg,
Don’t want to be negative about our injury/recovery situation and was going to offer a guest post on it during the Interlull if Holic was interested, particularly after Zico and Esso’s recent ‘why, f*cking why’ comments.
Ran out of time in the event, but I could work on it if ‘H is keen.
Similarly, I had a few thoughts on LJW’s injury with reference to Dat Power’s piece today. Jack’s original injury was a stress injury which is more down to orthotic support than padding.
Sorry, but have run out of time and battery tonight. Laters. 😉
So, I hear there might be a few holics in town on Saturday???
Any plans or is it get there early, go to the game, stay until closing????
Work on it Trev 😉
Your second part covers it Steve 😉
So what we can say is the Trev will do a post about injuries and treatment? I look forward to that although I guess it will be 3 weeks?? I will expect to read it in mid March then if normal Arsenal standards are applied.
😀
We could consider Pochettino as Wenger retires.
They both have the same philosophy
Hey NorCal, enjoying England so far?
Don’t get too drunk on the weekend because I want to read your match report about Southampton and see photos of some of the holics 😀
I wonder if the boss has considered that? wink, wink 8)
The free online dictionary tells me the definition of Poteen, the standard pronunciation of the name of the Southampton coach, as I understand it, is unlawfully distilled Irish whiskey. I could go for some of that. Will settle for some of the lawfully distilled Scottish varietal.
After living in aussie for 27 years i have learned not to shout too much about the cricket.
6-89 i had better hide
Loving the cricket, morning poms! Might not avoid the follow on at this rate!!!
7/89 now
8/91 still haven’t avoided the follow on! That Mitchell Johnson…..
6/39 in that session. We’ll played Aussies!
Blimey, never seen so many Aussies. Day 2 of 25 😉
Apologies holic, got a bit excited there! Day 2 indeed but quite a blow to the English batsman to be rumbled that cheaply on a fairly good deck. Thought carbattery played ok, KP was looking dangerous til he middled one to midwicket but the rest of them looked dreadful. Anyway as you say still a long way to go but I’m off to the pub now to stir up some soapdodgers!
Heh 😉
Morning H (colonial eh?) and Holics.
I never saw the fascination you Sassenachs have with that summer game.
Just one more sleep. 🙂
Not a cricket fan either, Bath, way too hoighty toity for an inner city yob like wot I is.
One sleep indeed, although I’ve hardly slept all week. I got someone coming in later to do the evening shift as Im going to try to hit the hay early. Journey starts tomorrow at around 5am and I’m not known as the worlds best early riser, a breakfast beer at Schipol should sort me out though. 😉
Even I, with my limited knowledge of cricket, understand that six wickets for just nine runs is unbelievably poor batting. I assume England’s best bet at this point would be to first and foremost play for a draw while hoping for a batting collapse by the Aussies?
Anyway. Less than two hours of work to do and then I’m off! Late-ish arrival in London, out for a quick pint and a bite to eat and then a fairly early night – got to be well prepared for the big day tomorrow 🙂
………..NEWSFLASH………NEWSFLASH………NEWSFLASH………
Due to a record number of ‘holics ascending on THOF, DLL are warning travellers that the Happy Train may be a little crowded;

For those planning to go by the Happy Underground Train, we have hired extra staff to help you reach your destination, they are polite, although a bit pushy;

Heh H2H @ 188!
Chezzer’s Top 20 on arseblog today is a must watch. How old is he again?
Where are my manners!?
http://news.arseblog.com/2013/11/video-top-20-wojciech-szczesny-saves/
H2H @ 188 & 189 – I much prefer the 188 option. That footage from Japan just made me think of Hillsborough. That’s truly barbaric.
It has to be recognised however that the Tollie is pretty rammed at 17.00 on matchday and getting to the bar is an exercise in determination, physical flexibility, patience and diplomacy.
Careful with our copyright Mister @ 188.
😎
@ 187
Geoffrey knows:
England have an 82-page booklet on what to eat but one guy comes in and bowls at 90mph and they can’t handle it.
He swings to the left…..etc.
Except when he goes for the throat. 😉
Sorry Bath, not my intention to offend.
Great vid indeed Bearded, real goosebump stuff. My favourites are the saves from the deflected shots against the Tinys and Baggies, because he was already commited but still (unbelievably) manages to change direction to keep them out.
Heh @ Dr F.
tabs has been MIA for a while, sure he’ll be around tomorrow though. Has anyone seen the Rev AL lately?
Don’t worry H2H he’ll show up at 201.
H2H @ 196
Both alive and mis-behaving on Twitter.
AL will be in his Missionary position and not at the Battle Cruiser tomorrow apparently….
arsist
Wellies it
Well in, Pangloss.
H2H @ 195, no offence taken mate. It was a great link but it gave me the heebie-jeebies.
Great link also @ 191 Bearded. That boy is a TOP keeper.

Well in Pangloss for the score and Ned for the glory position. Ollie’s master assist seems unsure whether he’s on Goonerholic or Arseblog;-)
Top form CBA, cattle inside yet?
Plans almost complete for trip to THOF. Flu jab this morning, bowls club AGM 7pm and straight onto last train up to London tonight. 2 nights b/b organised at Uply Junior (senior) Teddington. Letter of apology written in advance to lovely Danish daughter in law for the condition I expect to arrive back in Saturday evening, and any disrespectful comments I may have made about TGSTEL 😉
Re: Bearded video @191. Good thing SZCZ takes advantage of every millisecond during the slow motion to get back across goal to make all those great saves. 🙂

Backdrinking done, now its time to pack 🙂
Re: cba and NorCal @214/216. Thank you for verses and picture. Great stuff.
In-flight WiFi is quite nice, I must say! Just took off from Arlanda airport headed for London, arriving in about two hours…
Show-off, Lars!
Safe (continuation of) flight and see you tomorrow!

My dears, If you’re not on twitter, you are missing a heck of a lot. Hard to keep track of our holics! Norcal had a tasty English meal and Wind (God bless him) is so organized! Zico needs a nap (Nytol please) and Ollie, Dr C and Lars are raring to go!
Great links btw and good work by all of YOU.
