A Reluctant Farewell To A ‘Porcelain Player’
Jun 10th, 2015 by 'holic
“for an hour we were treated to the sight of Diaby back in the fold. This guy is going to be some player.“
So I wrote back in January 2007 as Abou Diaby returned to the side for the first time since he had his ankle smashed by Dan Smith, a pointless and vicious assault in the closing minutes of a nothing game.
In the first leg of the League Cup semi-final at White Hart Lane Diaby plotted our recovery from 2-0 down to grab a draw thanks to two goals from Julio ‘the beast’ Baptista. From January to May he flitted in and out of the side making 13 starts plus five appearances as a substitute. At Villa Park he secured three points for us with the only goal of the game.
A pattern was being established. A knee injury and further ankle problems were experienced in February, and in April he suffered from concussion. The blueprint for the seasons that followed was there for all to see. Still a formidable talent, but oh so fragile courtesy of one awful challenge.
His tally for the 2009/2010 season would be his best, scoring 7 goals in 40 appearances. His reward was a new long term contract which is only now expiring. There were still matches missed due to recurring injuries, and he was often patched up to get him on the park, so influential was he at his best. In 2011/2012 he didn’t start a solitary match, plagued by a succession of injuries suffered as he sought to get back to full fitness. In the last two seasons he has just started one match.
Such was his potential though there was never a question of his being released. Until today that is, when the Premier League’s retained list was published. There is an outside chance that he may still be offered a pay as you play deal by the club, but that isn’t likely to prove an attractive proposition for one so frail in body and limb.
Today has been coming quite frankly. Few will take any pleasure from the news though. Hugely talented, and a likeable character, Abou could have been the player who took charge of Arsenal’s midfield following the departure of Patrick Vieira. Instead we were restricted to fitful treats from a porcelain player. He shone brightly, but seldom.
Abou, we will miss you, and will always regret not seeing the player you could have become. Thanks for those moments when you were able to remind us of your talent. Whatever the future holds for you rest assured that large numbers of Arsenal supporters wish you all that you wish yourself.
If only…

A huge well played goes out to GSD who landed safely after chucking himself out of a plane earlier today.
You can still contribute to his pants cleaning bill, I mean his chosen charity here, http://www.everyclick.com/dinoskydive
Been a teary day for me. This and DIYSOS have finished me off. Wishing Abou nothing but the best for the next stage.
Thanks, Holic.

Lovely heartfelt piece Holic. A toast to an injury free and happy future for Abou whose Arsenal career should have yielded so much more.

Gutted for Abou….a loss of a prospective great. Saw him play in Istanbul in 2008 where he played a false no 9 in that great win 5-2 win at Fernebache. He was un-stoppable. Hoping he can find a level to play at in the future.
Many congrats to GSD – he was due for the high jump at some time in his life. Hoping the incontinence pads have been suitably disposed.
Cheers to Cba for some great musical interludes – widening my horizon there.

Sad to see Abou leave, such a wasted talent, he deserved better.
Does Dan Smith really work in a call centre, Trev? He deserves worse.

Latest rumour has Casillas in the GK equation, if replaced by De Gea at the Bernabeu.
I hope not. I’d sooner buy an up’n’comer than a oncewas. I was impressed by young Emily when he made a couple of appearances last year (he looked a proper keeper, as Trev said in the previous drinks), and I predicted he could end up our #1 in time. Anyone know how he’s going now?
Öskar
Same goes for Cech as Casillas in my previous, I wouldn’t touch him.
Öskar
Howdy Cba, good man that ye are. Suggest you threaten the cows with the Eddy Arnold song if they look like mis-behaving 😉
Oskar….Casillas – thanks but no thanks. He would be the prime example of signing someone way past their prime. Now Cech in his prime would be a great signing but how far has he gone downhill – who knows? Still not convinced that the translator would let him come to us anyway.

Ugly, I am with you. Casillas is definitely well past his peak and wouldn’t be an upgrade on either Ospina or Woj. Cech, I just don’t know. I do know AW tried to buy Cech as a youngster, so he must rate him; and AW wouldn’t buy now unless, as he always says, he is buying better than he has.
Otd: Martinez is well regarded, by all accounts. Seen as the long-term successor to whomever ends up as our No 1 keeper over the next few seasons. He had three Premiership starts last season (clean sheets in two) and one subs appearance when Woj went off injured against the Mancs. Also had a couple of CL appearances. Then went on loan in March to Rotherham, where he played eight games and was instrumental in them avoiding the drop from the Championship.
Mourinho banned from driving for six months. Looks like the magistrate isn’t a Chelsea fan: ban plus a £750 fine, £75 surcharge and £85 court costs for doing 60mph in a 50mph zone.

Haven’t been in for awhile. Hope all are well. To be honest, humble pie tastes pretty good. Another trophy won, was hoping but didn’t think we’d do it. Some astute decisions by Arsene down the home stretch. He’s had his fair share of stick from me. Credit where it’s due.
On a sad note, sorry about the inevitable departure of Diaby.
On a related note, half the medical team have been let go 🙂
Bye Abou (or maybe not a bye at all, I have a feeling he may not be really going away)
In any case, a glimpse of what could have been,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOVQl4vsYEQ
My personal favorite is the goal against Villa, it was a blistering quick counter attack and Diary after starting the move with a great back heel pass to himself covered an enormous amount of space in a few seconds before a cool finish…
As I said yesterday. I had the fortune of seeing this man play on more than one occasion. An exceptional player who made playing the game look easy.
His sublime footwork and good attitude were a joy to watch.
Who can forget his man of the match performance against Liverpool at the start of the 2012-13 season?
But most of all, I will always remember his advanced kick in the gob to John ‘ows ya wife’ Terry! Classic 😉
(Just a little light hearted humour there, not for the light-hearted) 😉
Salute Vassiriki Abou Diaby!!
The word on the street is that Jackson Martinez has had his release clause activated by AC Milan.

Apologies, Uply. Spill chucker!
Abou, such a talent, cut down in his prime at Sunderland. Sadly we will not see him again striding through the middle attacking the goal. My favourite moments were at Blackpool some ?3 seasons ago, he ran that game. Never quite understood why Arsene played him wide left, trouble was we had the “dream team” in the centre at that time, Hleb, Cesc, TR7 and the Flamster!
Fingers crossed Rambo and Co get their win tomorrow night.
That must have been 2010-11, Delia. That was the last season we played Blackpool — won 6-0 at home in August and 3-1 away in April. Diaby scored in both games.
Starting line ups were:
(H) Almunia, Sagna, Vermaelen, Clichy, Rosicky, Song, Diaby, Wilshere, Arshavin, Walcott, Chamakh;
(A) Lehmann, Eboue, Squillaci, Koscielny, Clichy, Wilshere, Nasri, Diaby, Fabregas, Arshavin, van Persie.
Things have changed a bit.
Sad but had to happen. Abou was that eternal hope which never turned real. News today though has contradicting reports that he indeed may stay and it heavily depends on Shad Forsythe saying yes he can stay fit for some time. So it looks like he may stay.
As much as it may sound rude, abou, flamini, arteta rozza all need to go. I mean they are all very good players but will they really get playing time here and is it truly the backup we need when in need? I have my doubts, not about their talent but sustained playing time.
GK and cech will be great for me. title winning teams have great gk’s and we cannot say that for our gk’s, neither of them. So Cech could well be the answer, leader as well truly helps. Wil mou sell? no chance, so the player to force the issue and knowing his loyalties with chelshit, i do not see that as well. So this may fizz out but i am hoping against hope.
News of falcao to chelshit, de bruyne to city makes me wonder what is FFP all about, never mind, where is our dm and striker.
Talking of strikers, higuian in the news with us and united in the mix. Werent we very close last time before he choose napoli, i am not sure if we will buy a striker though, danny and theo may just play more central when need be.
Copa America starts today and dear Alexis will run himself to the ground. Ozil as well played for germany yesterday and makes me wonder how only Arsenal players are played so much, never mind, alexis sorry i want chile knocked out first round and for you to get some rest.
Gonzalo Higuain’s agent is quoted as saying the following:
“Mourinho didn’t play him, so I don’t think he would go to Chelsea.
‘’In my opinion, I’m 90% sure he will go to Arsenal. It could earn be a minimum of €5million.
‘’It is not possible that a player like him wants to remain at Napoli this year after missing out on the Champions League.’’
Of course we heard similar horse-shite two seasons ago. However, as they say, you never know. Although certainty is more of an Arsenal transfer trait, I personally would not like this guy linked to us for too long for obvious reasons. His agents should just place the man and be done with it. In the meantime, it would help if they just shut the eff up!
😉
Mourinho banned from driving for six months.
Dear fixture computer. Please arrange for us to play Chelsea twice in the first few months of the season, while the tosser is unable to park the bus. Ta.
😉
Re: Diaby goals @43. Fantastic testament to Abou’s skill, power and grace. I feel so lucky to have seen many of those goals as live even if on TV. I remember exactly where I was when he teamed up with Eboue for that right wing gallop against Villa. I let out a cry of joy at the time that started several unsuspecting people who were in a midtown Manhattan bar at breakfast. But I never saw some of the others in that clip like the amazing left footed volley at #2. Diabolical. 🙂

[His most impressive achievements have been in the air. The former Villarreal man has won an incredible 86 per cent of his headed contests to date despite coming up against physical adversaries such as Everton forward Romelu Lukaku. To provide some context, the giant German Per Mertesacker can only boast of winning 71 per cent of his aerial battles.]
Impressive numbers.

Gabriel is someone i have high hopes as well, a better version of vermaelen maybe? A more fitter one will help to start off.
Mourinho up before the beak!?
As a few on here know I am a magistrate myself. Boy would I have liked to sit on that case. The Tower would be too good for him! I remember a lad looking to end his remand in custody made the mistake of turning up in a T********m shirt with Holsten emblazoned on it. That was a very short hearing!
Lovely piece on Abou who was a great talent who possibly played his best game ever at Anfield in Santi’s early days in a 2-0 win. Life isn’t fair is it?Otherwise we would win the quadruple every season.
Just a short word on Martinez. He has not remotely set the world on fire at either Rotherham or Sheffield Wednesday on loan in recent seasons. I have a friend who is a strong Wednesday fan. He had an ok spell in goal for us but that was all it was. He is about the same level as Don Vito in my view. I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a CL or World Cup winning goalkeeper for him . Goalies reach their peak in their thirties especially if they have a new challenge. Cech or Casillas? Take either in a heartbeat.
I was sad to note the death of Ian McKechnie on the website. He holds a dear place in my heart as I remember him saving a vital penalty with the scores tied at 3-3,in an early match in my Arsenal- watching career against Bolton. A few minutes later Skirton made the final score 4-3 to us. He was eventually dropped for being overweight.
A no- mark called Bob Wilson replaced him. Never knew what happened to him
Ttg would be the one in the window in this cartoon. See if you can spot Mourinho. 😉
http://lowres.jantoo.com/animal-kingdom-mouse_trap-execution-executioner-trap-mouse-36533684_low.jpg
I was at that game TTG.
For some reason i thought the score was 5-4,but having checked, you are indeed correct.
Shows how the memory can play tricks.
I do remember Eddie Hopkinson was in goal for Bolton.
Alan Skirton was a big unit, played on the right wing, and when he went rumbling down the touchline,it almost felt as though the ground shook.
If i had had to guess at our goalie that day,i would have gone for Furnell,or McClelland,as Mckechnie had fallen off my radar.
We had 4 keepers on our books that year, including the young Bob Wilson.
Ian only played 25 games for Arsenal, and had originally joined us as an outside left in 1958.
Joined Southend when he left us,and then transferred to Hull where he had a good 8 year spell.
Sad to hear of his passing, only 74,so not old by any means.
ttg@64: I think that Martinez did better at Rotherham than you allow for. He played an important part in helping them avoid the drop from the Championship. Playing behind a defence that had shipped 58 goals in 38 games before he joined on loan, he conceded 10 in 8 (1.25 goals a game, down from 1.5, a significant improvement), but only five in the last six games (0.8 goals a game). Match reports talking of him making good saves. More importantly for Rotherham’s survival they lost only three of those eight games, and only one of the last six, having lost nine of the 12 before Martinez joined. That run-in kept Rotherham one place clear of the relegation zone, and was the more creditable as the club was deducted three points during it for fielding an ineligible player.
Martinez is 22 and a prospect, a very good one. If we do buy a world-class keeper, I would first shed whichever one of Ospina or Szczesny fails to become the benchwarmer.
Hear her, Ttg (re Emily).
Öskar
That was a typo actually, but perhaps ‘Her her’ would have been appropriate for Emily(ano) Martinez. 😉
Öskar
My abiding memory of Diaby is the number of occasions you could swear he’d been beaten to the ball, or dispossessed of it, only for one of those long legs to extend like Inspector Gadget and recover it before neatly passing it on. Nijinsky (the dancer not the horse) would have been proud of that extension.
Öskar
Thai women defeat Ivorian women. Can’t say I expected anything else after the Germans beat Ivory Coast by 10-0 the other day. In any case the Thai women are quite something and I can say this without having watched the game.
Ditto about Chile v Ecuador in the Copa America and while Alexis is playing he apparently has not done anything of great significance in the first 63 minutes. Ho hum.
So I turned on the Women’s World Cup but apparently Canada v New Zealand has been halted by Canadian thunder. Who knew such a thing even existed? I refer of course, to Canadian thunder, not New Zealand. 😉
Not sure if the game was halted by thunder or by water pools on an undrainable artificial turf surface but there you go.
Funny you should say that bt8 because I was once in California attempting to send a parcel to New Zealand. Nobody in the Post Office there knew where NZ was – in fact, nobody there had even heard of it! Global outlook – I think not. Sigh.

Actually, one person had heard of it but couldn’t remember which state it was in!

Hmmm, Noosa. As the American satirist Ambrose Pierce once explained “War is God’s way of teaching Americans geography”, and to date they haven’t found a reason to declare war us. Just a matter of time though, I believe around 25 countries have been bombed at least once (some several times comprehensively) by The US since WW2…

No comment on our indefensible defense policy Oskar. 🙁

More FA nonsense:
http://www.thefa.com/news/governance/2015/jun/arsenal-charged-over-calum-chambers-transfer
I wonder who the disgruntled third party is NBN, something is fishy about this….campaign!!!
The rules on intermediaries involved in transfers are labyrinthine. It would be easy to fall foul of a technicality. Sounds in this case that the ‘disgruntled third party’ didn’t get the cut of the 3% agent’s fee for the deal to which he felt he was entitled. All the contracts and other documents in every transfer, including who are the intermediaries and what their financial deal is, have to be submitted to the FA. If has taken a year for this to come to light, the FA clearly either doesn’t bother to check any of the paperwork, and just shoves it in a box behind the sofa, or somebody was asleep at the switch — not that that would happen at the FA, of course.
A little bit of Arsenal trivia for you as Wales take on Belgium in their Euro qualifier. It is, as we are endlessly being reminded, 57 years since Wales last qualified for a major tournament — the 1958 World Cup. Two Arsenal players were in the Wales side that got to the quarter-finals in 1958 in Sweden, Dave Bowen, who captained the side at wing half, and Jack Kelsey in goal. And they were the first two Arsenal players ever to play in a World Cup. Laurie Scott was in the England side for the 1950 Finals in Brazil, the first time England entered the tournament, but didn’t get a game; some whippersnapper called Alf Ramsey was preferred at right back. No Arsenal players were in the England squad for the 1954 Finals in Switzerland, nor the 1958 Finals. Same is true of the Scotland squads.

Anyone watching the Copa America?
Plan to watch at least the Chile games in the group stages, and then more as the rounds progress.
Chile-Ecuador was an exciting game with some lovely passing moves by the host. Alexis started more centrally and even though did well in the first half not his best. Old man Valdivia was pulling strings. After the break Alexis was switched to left and Vargas was brought in centrally and then our man started to create some terrific solo moves, before setting Vargas up with a superb assist. Vidal had a good match as well, and Bravo in goal too. Swansea’s Montero was fantastic for Ecuador, not just Chambers or Bellerin he will give most rights backs in the world torrid time. 2-0 for Chile but a very good game.
Hopefully they win it for the first time in Copa America’s history. They are really exciting but this super-aggressive 3-5-2 may come undone against teams with craftier midfield passers. But skills as well as attitude wise a very likable team.

UP THE ARSENAL
I’m with you, cba.
Just occasionally – mainly due to lack of time – i might decide to watch a game not involving us.
If it involves any of our main rivals and they go a goal up, i switch off.
The truth is, after about ten or fifteen minutes I just can’t be bothered to watch any more, whatever has happened, and I give up anyway.
Can’t miss a minute of us though. Couldn’t even bring myself to switch off the 2-8 debacle at Old Trafford.
cba @ 89: What makes company of other people interesting is that we are all different, have different background and experiences and perspectives and different ways of expressing ourselves. It is a football blog, and I don’t see the problem in expressing our interests in matters football, the game that is actually played.
I find it somewhat amusing that despite making your best attempts to construct a serene persona of earthly wisdom you are too easily annoyed. I am not at all offended by your easy ways of being offended, but really, drama queen much? 🙂
Take it easy, cher ami. Things you don’t like are best left avoided.
Many of us “outsiders” — some people who didn’t grow up supporting Arsenal or even following English football for that matter — would always be football fans as much as we are Arsenal fans.
I don’t get too much time to watch any football outside Arsenal games, but whenever I get a chance I plan on watching and enjoying them, and talk about them and if they involve our beloved Arsenal players talk about them in a pubic football blog about Arsenal.
And that doesn’t make people like us any dedicated to matters Arsenal, or any less passionate about it.

cba @82, i’d missed that.
chills, goosebumps, tears, hair up on the back of my neck…god DAMN that’s a video. thank you.
cba, your mate’s knee @18 –
If it was an uncomplicated replacement the main risk of “overdoing it” is probably infection. He should avoid straining it until the scar is properly healed and avoid any possibility of contamination in his farm environment.
He should be looking at a gradual return to full “normal” weight bearing activity in around six weeks. It sounds as though that period may already have passed though. By the sound of it, his farming may be on the heavy side of normal use too !
There isn’t too much problem with muscle strain as the muscles are not actually detached during the operation. They are peeled back to expose the joint and the heads of the tibia and femur are cut away with a template before the new joint is cemented in place. The muscles are then repositioned over the joint before the wound is stitched. The most likely cause of strain or tearing is where the muscles had become inflamed and weak in the period of pain and disability (often several years) prior to the operation.
One complication that might need extra healing time is if the patella is removed to be relined on the back surface. After the new surface is attached, the patella tendon is then stitched and repositioned as before and the wound then closed up. That will need e few weeks extra healing time to allow the internal damage to heal properly.
Your mate needs to watch carefully for swelling, redness, heat and undue pain, all of which could be indicators of infection. If any of those are present he needs to get it checked out asap.
cheers trev

Well in for the ton, Trev, though I don’t know what you tell your daughter about Friday nights…
I lean, though far from absolutely, towards the not watching if it’s not us school of thought. However, the Wales-Belgium game was worth it for the crowd singing the Welsh national anthem half way through the second half. A stadium’s worth of male voice choir in full song. Surprised Belgium didn’t give up there and then, it was so powerful. Even shut the commentators up for the duration. Worth it for that alone.
Went to the Oval today.
Watched a game for eight hours and then a little bit of rain ruined what could have been a great finish .
But exciting though it may be I’m not sure ODIs nowadays are really cricket. It’s just a slogfest
My thoughts turned to my first visit to the Oval for a Test in 1965. ( v South Africa) Cowdrey and Barrington fielding you could run three if you hit it to the boundary. Nowadays you are lucky to get one. Sport has changed soooo much- it’s true of Rugby, Cricket and of course football

No shame in being a huge Gooner AND a football scholar – they don’t have to be mutually exclusive positions. Being a fan is of course all about the supporting, the camaraderie and the partisanship – and that’s enough for a lot of people which is fine, but those that also want to pontificate and pass judgement on Arsenal’s performance throughout the season (namely the inward-looking critical fans), might want to gain a bit more authority and reality on what’s going on in the football world outside of Ashburton Grove from time-to-time…

A good article about Alexis through the years: http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/making-alexis-sanchez-those-who-helped-him-achieve-greatness?
[The Arsenal transfer had a huge impact not just on his hometown but the entire country. “Now there are hundreds of Arsenal jerseys visible on the streets of Santiago, thanks to the Alexis effect,” says Sanchez biographer Diaz.]
Just like Bergkamp’s arrival at Arsenal made many outsiders to start following Arsenal, Alexis is going to have an impact like that and more over the next few years.
football is fun
football should be fun
watching football should be excruciating fun
analysing team performances within an inch of their lives
is never fun
crowbarring pseudo-intellectual cheese fests into football
isn’t fun
unless it’s wee cheese footballs on sticks
all fun and eaten

Watch out
The fun police is out and about
Dead drunk and buried in sheep excrement
At middle of the night in some obscure village.
On a Friday night.
Fun police knows exactly how
Football can be talked about. Beware of
Speaking formations, or arguing about the merits of
A pivote.
Fan police might revolt.
The irony of an Arsenal fan
The club that first gained worldwide prominence
On the merits of tactical revolutions.
To pontificate about the uselessness of discussions
That doesn’t end in a mirthful conclusion
In another pointless and useless video quotation.

cba@115: 🙂
…but I’d be the last one to argue that there aren’t stories in data if you care to look. Art backed by science.
Dr F., just as they used to say never to pick fights with anyone who buys ink by the barrel, I’d suggest similar restraint in taking on anyone who (mostly) keeps to four words to a line…
And, anyway, if cba was Japanese he’d be designated as a National Living Treasure, which is how the government there certifies “Preservers of Important Intangible Cultural Properties”.
NBN @ 117: Just a very civilized verbal jousting, in between putting the tyke to bed and bringing the car while the wife discusses the night’s plan with the baby-sitter. I don’t pick fights, they are absolutely pointless. 🙂
In case you are wondering about the strange evolution of today’s arguments, it started with my post at 88. Yes, I am surprised too. 🙂

I’ve been impressed by Montero both at the World Cup and against us last season. He has pace and trickery to burn
I don’t watch too much football as this time of year as Mrs TTG thinks I’m obsessed as she thinks the season ended with the Cup Final!
Jefferson Montero sounds like the sort of car Jason King would drive.
🙂
Opening a can of worms there, Cynic.
Could there be a laydee playing in the Women’s World Cup called Marina Morris ?
Is it possible that our very own Countryman is married to a lady called Minnie ?
Probably not. 😉
Highlights of Chile’s 2-0 win yesterday in the Copa America including Alexis’ excellent pass for the second goal.

Nice link bt8b and nice pass by Alexis. Thanks for the link.
Hope Chile win the thing.
Hay bath. This Chile team along with the current Colombia team are breaths of fresh air on the South American footballing scene and I would like to see either one of them win it. Or an even smaller minnow.
I also had a peek at some of the Women’s World Cup but toy mind fifa have made a travesty of it by allowing Canada to host it on artificial pitches. Hope they got an adequate payoff from Canada and/or the pitchmakets for that award but it must never be allowed to happen again..
pitchmakets = pitch makers
