Poldi Exits The Revolving Door At Colney
Jul 5th, 2015 by 'holic
It’s Sunday, and the weather that has kept me in the garden for days has temporarily been replaced by wintry showers. So at last I have a chance to catch up with what is happening.
The main story appears to be the departure of Lukas Podolski to Galatasaray after just three years with the club. His enthusiasm seemed to lift the spirits around the squad, and his social media onslaught charmed the supporters. Last summer he hit the heights with an FA Cup winners medal and as a member of Germany’s World Cup winning squad, but on his return to Arsenal he found he had slipped down the pecking order following the signings of Alexis and Danny Welbeck. The curse of the Arsenal number nine shirt had struck again.
Unhappy, he persuaded Arsene Wenger to let him join Inter Milan on loan in January, but he scored just once in 17 appearances and the Italian club did not extend their interest to a permanent deal. I hope he finds form and happiness again Turkey where the opportunities to add to his Instagram account are endless. Thank you for your brief but hopefully largely enjoyable spell as a Gunner, Lukas. We’ll miss the smiles, and the hammer of a left foot.
His departure, along with About Diaby, frees up two decent chunks of salary for anyone who may follow Petr Cech through the in door. Now that the Copa America is ended we may get a clearer picture of which of the current goalkeepers may be moving on to pastures new. It would seem that the preference would be to retain the services of the ‘homegrown’ Wojciech Szczesny and cash in on the in-form Columbian, David Ospina. Quite what Szczesny thinks of that would be interesting to know.
Talking of the Copa America, huge congratulation to Alexis and Chile for their defeat of favourites Argentina in last night’s Final. The 120 minutes that preceded the penalty shoot out may not have been the hoped-for spectacle, but the drama that unfolded and ended with the cheekiest of winning spot-kicks by Alexis (who else!) lifted more than just the unexpected winners. Would someone now removeย his power pack so he rests up in preparation for what could be a huge season for Arsenal.
Aย word of congratulations too for the England Ladies on clinching bronze medals with another upset against pre-tournament favourites Germany at the WWC. Their superb win will have lifted everybody after the semi-final disappointment against Japan. Let’s hope their historic efforts will provide a springboard for the womens game to develop further here.

we all knew that you were better than giroud but since you are not a french it was difficult gpr you. but all the best. we still love and no one wi convince us that giroud is better than you.
Cheers H! Nice post.
For me its a no brainer – Giroud vs Polddi? Go check the stats why don’t you?
Did not mind him, and loved some of his strikes, esp from long range; but always wary of those who don’t put a defensive shift in – every game. No good running back for a Hollywood tackle in your own box, having done the square root of fuck all defensively for the previous b2 games.
He goes with my best wishes. And that’s it.
1Christian Mafuta …reveal yourself! You are either (a) bonkers, (b) Podolski or (c) Podolski’s mum.
Couldn’t play CF, 3rd or 4th best on left, couldn’t defend. Loved the left foot buit a left foot doth not maketh the man! Great guy, good times, ra, ra, ra…. next!!!
Nice summary Guvna.
Great performance by the England Ladies. Even had this Scot cheering them on.
*Looks round to ensure Nasty Nicola isnae listening*
I for one do not believe Poldi is better than Girud in anything other than possessing a hammer of a left foot that is useful if he gets the right pass in or on the edge of the box. Giroud is a much better all round player.
Poldi seems a lovely chap but needs to play as the left sided member of a front two picking up the scraps from a target man much as he did in his pomp for Germany with Klose. Sadly he cannot play as a lone target man a role in which OG excels or as a wide man capable of getting up and down the pitch for a full 90 minutes.
It’s a hard fact that he failed to deliver at Bayern, at Arsenal and at Internazionale. Here’s hoping he has better luck at Galatasaray.

The funny thing is that early on in his Arsenal career, Poldi worked so hard and tracked back so much he rarely lasted beyond 70 minutes in matches. But that work ethic seemingly disappeared during his months out after that hamstring injury in the CL qualifiers in August 2013, and reached a nadir when he, as a sub who had played just a few minutes, couldn’t be arsed to close down that Anderlecht player he could easily have stopped from making the cross from which they equalised. That was probably also the moment Arsene had had enough, because iirc he only started one more game after that which was the dead rubber against Galatasaray.
Shame it didn’t work out as well as we had hoped, but the last few months apart he did do an OK job for us (particularly in his first season where he scored a few quite vital goals) and while not a storming success I think he was far from a failure as well. His diminishing minutes on the pitch were to a great extent simply a reflection of our overall improvement. Thank you and good luck at your next club.
For me the overriding thought I have about Poldi is regretfully a case of what he could have been. I just think if Wenger got a hold of him some years earlier and if he’d been groomed in the right way – he could have optimised his potential and become a world class player. He reminds me in some ways of Arshavin. Just thought they arrived a little too late in their respective careers to make the necessary alterations at this level despite the obvious talents they both had.
Poldi was made for 4-4-2 but had the misfortune to play in the 4-2-3-1 era. May he find every happy hashtag there is at Galatasaray.
Evening, Holic !
Bath, Lars, Joe and Ned have it.
Prosecution rests, m’Lud.
Agree with wat Trev said……there was no defence offered ๐
Speaking of BtM – remember when he said that fake crowds on tv broadcasts would soon be a reality?
It happened this weekend at an athletics gala in Paris.
This article is in Swedish, but just look at the pictures at the top:
http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/friidrott/article21077673.ab
The one on the left shows the actual crowd as seen on Swedish telly, the one on the right what was aired on the pictures provided by the IAAF.
For me the overriding thought I have about Poldi is regretfully a case of what he could have been
Gonzalo Higuain? ๐
Lars@13: If we are sure the photos were taken at roughly the same time, then whatever the video equivalent of photoshopping in a crowd is called is (a) scandalous and (b) stupid, as it was sure to be found out.
Goal scorers.??
Poldi was 3rd rate
Ollie is 2nd rate.
Now we just need a 1st rate.
The big news is I’ve shrunk my name because I got fed up typing the extra letters and nobody used the full name anyway .
Well that’s not that big a deal unless you are very sad . Poldi going isn’t either in my opinion.
I think Joe’s comparison to Arshavin is valid partly because there is a feeling that both could have worked a little harder and there is a feeling of unfulfilled potential with both of them. He got some terrific goals and was a super finisher . I remember a really good performance at Fulham the season before last just before he did his hamstring and two awful performances. A game at QPR where he played through the middle and was awful and last season’s Capital One Cup Tie against Southampton where his level of effort and fitness reminded me of the worst days of Paul Merson .
He had a fairly good goal per game percentage I would imagine , but his departure won’t be greeted with huge sadness by most Gooners. I wish him well in Turkey but I suspect his greatest success will always happen in Cologne where he is idolised .
Agree with Joe, Poldi was always potentially more than we ever saw, caught between never being fully fit and never getting enough opportunities to get match fit and find his best form.
What might have been indeed. Lovely chap though, I’ll miss his tweets.

Ttg … when I left click the Name box up comes ‘รskar the dog’ which saves me typing it every time (which would be a real hassle with the umlaut!). Ditto with the Mail box. Dunno if I did anything to make this happen, but have you tried it?

Thundertiny Gooner. Nobody typed your full name when it actually was your full name but I never could figure out what the proper writing of the acronym was though, whether TTG or Ttg, so thanks and now we know. ๐
Ned, I saw the broadcast myself and I even reacted to it and thought “wtf, wasn’t that tier empty just a few seconds ago?” so yes, the pictures are from the same time.
Poldi and Arshavin is an interesting comparison. The what if tag line suits both to the hilt though i believe Arshavin had a better impact than poldi. Arshavin quite literally kept us in the top four in the season he came in, the season where villa i think were around 10 points ahead of us.
Poldi delayed his surgery just to play in the world cup and that may have been the wrong decision. He never truly was the player he should have been and spent too much time on social media than on the pitch.
Yes, do wish him good for he is a amicable chap. Not a loss for us in any sense.
Alexis with the penalty to win the copa america was poetic justice to the man and the team. Chile were better and the great lionel messi had 0 shots on goal. Any thoughts on higuian to Arsenal may have evaporated following the glaring misses he had during normal time and the penalty. I agree it is not the yardstick to judge him but rather have Benzema plying his trade here please.
Congratulations to the American women. Well played and well deserved.
Lars@22: Thanks for the confirmation.

In his prime, LuPo was one of the best players I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen him in Koln colours.
Killer. Old school.
Ned,
I can’t remember the last time i disagreed with you but I honestly don’t understand the offence taken at that tweet, which refers to the England football women being described as “mothers, partners and daughters”.
Aren’t they then ?
Would there be outrage at the men’s team being described as fathers, partners and sons ?
“”Maybe they go back to having actual jobs & lives which DON’T revolve around them being subservient to other people???” asks Josephine Liptrott. “”
I personally think it is Ms Liptrott’s problem if she automatically sees the female side of every relationship as being subservient.
Looks like she needs to get herself into a decent relationship.
Looks like she needs to get herself into a decent relationship.
Is that the 21st Century version of “She needs to get herself laid”?
๐
No, it’s one where it’s not assumed she is subservient just because she’s a woman.
I’m not going to even attempt to joke about it, Cynic, it just strikes me like someone waiting to be offended.
I can see where Trev is coming from. The comment was deemed to be patronising and could be taken as such if you were looking to be offended but it wasn’t meant like that at all, in my opinion.
For me the great triumph of the WWC and our performance was that people realise the quality of the product in the way that at Wimbledon there are identical crowds and interest in both the women’s and men’s tennis or in the Olympics especially in Athletics where there is huge interest in both men’s and womens’ sport.
I can remember sitting in the North Bank at Highbury when the ladies paraded trophies and morons around me sang to them to ‘ get their tits out for the lads’. That seems a prehistoric attitude now just as the monkey noises accompanying the arrival of black players now seems utterly coarse and repulsive . But please let’s remember sport is there to be enjoyed and in an ultra PC world it’s nice sometimes to react without having a compliance department to check out whether what we say is appropriate. I think it’s marvellous that Katie Chapman can be a devoted mother to three children and a top footballer . Dennis Bergkamp is a devoted father to four children but he didn’t have to go through childbirth and a period of post – birth rehab on three occasions and show enough dedication to get herself in condition to play international football but I doubt I would be thanked for saying it even if my admiration for the lady is immense.
Evening all. If there are a couple of potential guest posts out there then next week would be the perfect slot for them. I am at Cardiff on Saturday providing the Aussies can make it to day four ๐ and off to Cornwall for a cloudy five day break on Sunday.
I am, of course, hoping I can find a connection on the Cornish coast in order to maintain any contact!
Frankly, one seal, or one dolphin, is all I want.
Oh, and the offer of guest posts is to ‘holics, not the PITAs who mail me every day with the offer of content that earns them money. Do one.
Trev@29: It was the “go back to” that was the troublesome part. Regardless of the substance of the intention (and I don’t disagree with Ttg that there are people who can extract offence from anything), the wording of the FA tweet was a land mine waiting to go off in social media. Its staff should have seen that. If they didn’t for lack of understanding that says something about underlying attitudes — and if the FA doesn’t have any system of review pre-publication, then that says something equally troubling about the FA.
Morning transfer buffs!
Could my spidey intuitions be working?
Something regarding our recent activities and Turkish clubs made me question the Ospina to Fenerbache rumours.
Well, a quote from Ospina has been found floating around. It could be old and it could be new. At the moment it is being touted as being new and it goes as follows:
โI have always had to fight for the title position at all of my clubs. You expect a big club like Arsenal to improve the squad but you must always impress the manager in training.โ
Read in to how you wish!
The saga continues! ๐
Good luck to Poldi at Gala!
A very big character around the dressing room.
Even Aaron Ramsey tweeted that he will be missed!
His thunderous left foot is one to be desired, which has skimmed many a goalkeeper during his stint with the Gunners!
I Salute big Poldi!
Ned, as a follow-up to the fake crowds, the IAAF and the Diamond League have said they had nothing to do with it and have both distanced themselves from it. The fakery was done by French TV channel Canal Plus who were responsible for the production.
I’d be happy to do a guest post. I just don’t have the faintest idea what to write about…

My Palace mate tells me they expect to get Cabaye for ยฃ10 million. Now there might be a sensible buy for us at that price. Prem experience, can play deep in a holding role or centrally, has an excellent shot and another French player. Perfect . To keep Palace sweet we can loan them Sanogo again.

Logie Baird’s finest work was the invention of blocking at corners. He was a master of the arm around the waist, which became known as his horizontal hold.. *ahem*
Mega heh @146. You have of course made a statement that is incomprehensible to drinkers who were not drinking for real before 1980.
The horizontal-hold control, which adjusts the horizontal deflection generator so that it conforms exactly to the control of the horizontal synchronizing impulses
Incomprehensible, you say?
I’m not liking Ricky Ponting on my telly incidentally. Bad move, Sky.
Have any televisions had a horizontal hold adjustment button since 1980?
Cynic,
Not even going to ask you to describe his vertical hold ………
The vertical hold is the same as the horizontal hold, but is applied to errant team mates in the dressing room after a defeat and involves the use of the dressing room wall.
There’s been a lock on the vertical hold on here this afternoon.
