Squad Strength To Be Tested Again In Hull Replay?
Mar 7th, 2016 by 'holic
A run of indifferent performances was hopefully all but brought to an end by a display that suggested a degree of ‘bouncebackability’ at the other end of Seven Sisters Road. Those who start at Hull in Tuesday’s FA Cup replay just need to go one better and achieve the first ofΒ what we need to become a run of wins. Is our bad patch, five matches without a win, over? Let’s hope so.
The team news suggests there will not be as many as the nine changes we made for the 0-0 draw at the Grove. Alex Iwobe will take the place of the suspended Francis Coquelin in the squad from Saturday. No others were mentioned specifically but it would not be so much of a surprise to see at least one of the other youngsters, perhaps Jeff Reine-Adelaide, making the trip. Of those who were on the bench on Saturday it is probable that all but Matt Macey and possibly Nacho Monreal will get a start.
The starting eleven might include a back four of Hector Bellerin, Calum Chambers, Gabriel, and Kieran Gibbs in front of David Ospina. Mathieu Flamini may join Mohamed Elneny in front of the back four. Joel Campbell, Alex Iwobi, and Theo Walcott could be set to start behind Olivier Giroud.
Like the Gunners Steve Bruce has promised rotation in his Hull team who are prioritising promotion back to the Premiership, although as we saw in the first match, when he made ten changes, their squad is deep.
“The priority is the league and where we want to get to. We want to be playing the Arsenals and the Chelseas every week. But there’s nothing quite like an FA Cup tie or FA Cup run. Once it gets to this stage there’s all to play for.”
Certainly up top Arsenal will need Giroud and Walcott to recover form and confidence in order to progress, but a match a long way from the changeable atmosphere at the Grove these days may make that more likely. There is a blend of youth and experience in what I think will be the team that looks good enough to secure a quarter-final date with Watford on Sunday.
If you are looking for an omen the Gunners, seeking a third consecutive FA Cup triumph at Wembley, have won each of their last five visits to Hull in all competitions. It is, as they say, a lucky venue for us.
The ‘holic pound
Having said that I am confident of us progressing there is an imaginary parrot on my shoulder squawking “penalties, penalties” in my ear. It may not go that far but the possibility of extra-time cannot be discounted. However the odds on the draw aren’t that appealing so I am backing my original feeling and taking the 8/1 available on 1-2 to the visitors.
A word for those making the trip to Humberside on the proverbial cold wet Tuesday in the not quite frozen north. I remember well how long a day it can be making a 300 mile roundtrip so fully appreciate the efforts you are making to get behind the boys again. Few from outside the Arsenal could bring themselves to admit it, but our away support remains the envy of all in England. I hope you are rewarded with a decent performance and a pulsating cup tie.
Have a great one, ‘holics.

Get in.
Score early then score again.
Wily front man. Just what we need π
Having read the Guvna’s pearls, I’m back to score again.
Nice one Guvna.
2-1 to the Arsenal sounds good to me.
Me thinks Bellerin needs a breather and play Chambers at right back and Mert with Gabriel in the centre and Gibbs left back. Theo should not start as he has been limper than Ozil’s wrist celebration this season and start with Iwobe.

Little known fact is that Hull have a 100% record against us in FA Cup at their place.
Played 1 won 1.
Mind you it was back in 1908,so not entirely sure if it is relevant. !!
Another little known fact is under AW,we have never lost an FA Cup tie away to a lower division side.
Won 11 and drawn 4.
Hull have never beaten a PL side in the FA Cup when they have been in a lower division.
I am filling in for the Monks,as they are in lockdown after Vespers,as some reprobate Monk has scoffed all the trifle that was supposed to be dessert after dinner this evening.
The wailing and gnashing of teeth could be heard for many a mile, given they only get Dessert once every 3 months.!!

OH @4, I agree that Hector needs a rest and the bonus is that Per and Gabby get another match day experience to build their partnership.
However I would play Feo and tell him that he has to get on the ball at least 20 times each half.
I would play Iwobe for Ozil and Joel for Alexis and have HFB at CF. The myth of Feo as a CF has to end now.
Flamini for Coq and Elnenny to get another start alongside.
Alexis and Rambo and Danny on the bench for emergency use only.
CBA knows. Parrots are psychotic and shit all over the place. Ergo they are qualified to be Spurs fans.
The Guvna had yet again encapsulated the issues beautifully. If we were to lose it would not be of advantage to us. Let’s play as many league games as possible with Santi in the side. I’m hoping we put out s strong team and defend and attack with passion. 3-1 to the Arsenal looks good especially as I think Sanchez may start to build on the momentum
from Saturday when he got back into scoring rhythm.
COYG
Nice one Holic – you’ve set up the match with your usual aplomb.
I think we need to put out the strongest team possible to ensure we progress. It’s still in our own hands to win the FA cup whereas the league is now out of our hands and probably we are only 4th favourites. On the other hand it would be a manificent achievement to win 3 FA cups on the trot.
Team wise I would only rest Bellerin & Welbeck plus Nacho if there is a doubt about his fitness. Priorities need to be realistically re-assessed!
Your scoreline looks a good bet but I’ve a feeling for 3-1 to the good guys.
Thanks for the preview ‘holic. Gibbs and Elneny getting 2 consecutive games; is this a parallel universe? π
Come on the Arsenal three-peat.
I agree with Uply, I don’t see wholesale changes and expect both Mesut and Alexis to start. AW will want to win this and not put all his eggs in an increasingly shaky looking Prem title.
Hopefully we’ll see Theo playing WITH Ollie instead of rotating at CF where Theo has no business playing. If he starts I also hope he’s told to leave defending to defenders and get on with his primary function. His recent ‘heat maps’ showing average positions around the halfway mark explains a lot about what’s been wrong with him lately, imo.

Like others I do hope we won’t make too many changes, we need to take this one seriously so we can play Warford Saturday at home with restored confidence. The following rounds might offer us tougher nuts to crack though.
1-2 seems a bit pessimistic to me, I’ll go for 0-3 with the forwards having to prove themselves in this game.

Nice one, Holic.
Spot on re the travelling faithful. If only the Emirates was as relentlessly positive.
I don’t think Ozil will start and I certainly hope Walcott doesn’t either. No worries about him defending too much, Oskar. If he does trot back, you can rest assured he won’t do anything too challenging when he gets there.
Hopefully we’ve seen him dribble out of defence, fall over at the first hint of a challenge and set the opposition up with a goal for the last time.
If there’s any truth at all in Bath’s link that Wet Spam want him for Β£26 million, we should snap both their arms, and legs, off for it.
Now, back to that relentless positivity. ?
3-1 to the rip roaring !!

Great preview Holic as always you don’t disappoint and as Matt has mentioned above these are coming in way too fast but hey I’m not complaining em I now π
Feo shouldn’t be allowed to play until he proves that he can get stuck in instead he pulls out of every challenge is he afraid or something? Perhaps Chicago Bulls can snap him from us for a nice fee as he’s certainly looking for a non contact sport these days.
1:3 to the Gooners
COYBG!
If you don’t pick him how can he prove what you want him to prove?
He might be an ass-kicking bully boy in training (after all he’s up against his team mates and they’re all a bit piss weak) so I’m interested to know how you’d make him prove it without him playing.
Amusingly, following accusations of bloggers being idle cretins, The Mirror has now picked up the WEST HAM TO MAKE Β£26M BID FOR WALCLOT.
What fucktards they are.
Cynic
You are right of course you have to play him if he’s to prove anything at all, however I’m not 100% sure if he wants to prove anything. I can always be proved otherwise let’s hope that’s the case. I have always been a great fan of Theo however he hasn’t made that step forward instead he’s gone backwards which is real shame because I always stood firmly behind the lad.
I think he is the ultimate comfort zone, no winning mentality, player. Appears to be delighted to be playing football for a living and is too content with his lot.
If he plays, life’s great.
If he doesn’t play, he’s at a good club, and life’s great.
He has millions in the bank, a pretty wife, good home life, his son thankfully came through his heart problems fine.
Life is good for Theo Walcott.
If we had a more demanding manager we’d get a lot more out of him, and the others in this squad who are happy to be playing for the club and not that arsed about winning, or putting themselves out to achieve things.
Whoever replaces Wenger, I hope he is a hungry manager who demands 100% from his players at all times and won’t put up with less, then claim “we gave everything”, as happened after the disgrace of Old Trafford.
Just sitting at work a little bored at the minute.
Thought I’d check in on you lot.
I thought the mood would be a little rougher around the utd defeat.
A few of you took it better than I did. We have dipped during our usual period. Just after being knocked out of the league cup and just before getting knocked out of the CL.
I can’t really put it any plainer, but it’s our usual form around this time of the season. We have exited the league cup a lot sooner in recent times in favour of the FA Cup, which sits proudly in cabinet over the last two seasons.
Tonight we are heading closer to another FA Cup record, but what’s important is our form in the league. The CL seems doubtful but still worth a fight. Really our form across the board should be consistent, if Iβm being honest.
But, there is something about having 9 more games and only having to compete with the scum and the foxes to get there, which makes it more appealing than ever before. 7 points off of the top and a small chance of closing the gap as we fight to gain more points.
I would like us to treat every game now as a cup final, or as a derby, same as we did against sp*rs and same as we should play tonight. After all, if we are competing with the scum, thatβs a derby in itself, right?
We’re Arsenal football club and as of now, we are still in 3 comps in March, with half a chance, if not more of gaining major honours.
Please Arsenal, let’s finish the job this season! Let’s take care of what we need to take care of and let the rest take care of itself!
Interesting news in the world of Tennis as Sharapova has admitted taking mildronate for the past 10 years.
@ATG
That Sharapova ‘drug’ has only recently been classified as one i believe. Bet plenty have been taking it too, but i guess one must follow the regulations of the governing body!
What is to constitute one and the other not? Coffee is a performance enhancing drug in my humble opinion.
Maradona was on drugs too(not coffee!).. and readily admitted it. (Maybe that’s why he actually thought it was the hand of god…!)
π
She has or had a heart condition for the past 10 years too I suppose. I know it has only been published illegal on September last year but come on do they not check their emails?
That drug should long since have been banned for athletes. Why it wasn’t is a question that should be asked. Clearly another piece of corruption in top level athletics. It increases blood supply to muscles and is clearly taken to enhance performance.
She’s been taking it for ten years because of a family history of diabetes. Complete bullshit.
However it’s a real shock to discover that a top Russian athlete is on drugs isn’t it?
It does make me wonder why I bother watching any sport. We should have the Chemical Olympics and the athlete with the best physician wins most.
Wouldn’t single out the russians… look at the kenyans.
I have no illusion about drugs in sports.. enough money and fame to be made and it will continue.
Athletes only have to keep abreast of the governing bodies regulations to keep it as clean as possible. In sharapova’s case, clearly she is at fault and have admitted so.
As for performance enhancing.. coffee is probably the most abused BUT it is not illegal ..so there!
π
Serge Gnabry in the pre-Hull training photos on the Arsenal web site, if I’m not mistaken. A couple of other less familiar faces too.
Hope Gnabry and Iwobi gets some match time.. looks like it’s the time of year again when we shall need to unearth another Coquelin…!
Need some fresh legs!
Don’t forget it is a ridiculous-o’clock kick off time of 7pm
I’ll be looking for a stream to watch this one, fresh legs or no. Hoping to see some Arsenal salmon swimming swiftly upstream against the current, and maybe leaping over a rock or two. π
Just out of interest ; why the early kick off ?
(Sorry if I missed something on previous posts)
Trev
If it’s really true that West Ham want to ‘ launch’ their tenure at the Olympic stadium with a splurge on Theo could we not arrange with Arsenal that we will get a number of us on here to drive the lad to Stratford. It’s a bit out of my way but with diesel going down in price it’s a sacrifice I’m prepared to make.
I loved your insights about Theo’s defensive capabilities or propensities. There is not much chance that his attacking instincts will be blunted by defensive duties. I don’t know what motivates the lad because against Man U at home he was brilliant, racing back to press their midfeld like a nutter. But at Old Trafford he brought a new dimension to the term ‘pathetic’. I could play like a big Jessie and I would have done it for a fraction of the money we pay Theo. If he really does want to fulfil obvious potential he’s running out of time to do so. It must be hard to motivate very rich young men like Theo and I have to say that when I see him start in a game where we need to graft my heart sinks when I see his name
Prove me wrong Theo
nicely done m’lud
Early kick off is because it’s a Champions League week and we needed UEFA permission to play the game*. They stipulated a kick off time that would cause the least disruption to their telly partners I guess.
*Another reason to get out of the EU π
I’m glad that parrot was imaginary. That could get tedious!
Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud start for Arsenal along with 19-year-old midfielder Alex Iwobi…
Cheers @ #55
Was just curious as it’s reaking havoc with my home life tonight.
*Another reason to hate Chelsea more like.
Ospina, Chambers, Mertesacker, Gabriel, Gibbs, Flamini, Elneny, Campbell, Iwobi, Walcott, Giroud
Subs: Macey, Monreal, Ramsey, Reine-Adelaide, Willock, Ozil, Alexis
It’s only 300 miles if you don’t stop in on the oldies in the Kingdom first for a more robust 800 miler. Bloody cold up here tonight. I’ll take 1-2 (but you promised me that on Saturday too π )
Enjoy. COYG
It’s the team I chose until I was convinced by wiser heads that we should play Ozil and Alexis to ensure we win the game.
However at least we will have the ‘playing with 10 men spirit’ from the start! π
Aye, it’s cold down here too ya big Jessie!
Aha, it seems I missed the parrot puns.
A mate of mine was trying to annoy me with all his bird puns but I told him toucan play at that game. ?
I hope Theo and Giroud have got their scoring boots on tonight no excuses please.
COYG!
So I got ten out of the eleven. Per Mertesacker starts, Calum at right back in place of Hector.
Come on now Bath @62 ?
I hope the Holic pound is truly on though ?
In reality there is no way of knowing how well this team will play. They should be good enough to win comfortably but I worry that they will struggle to dominate midfield with Flamini and Walcott in there. Theo could pulverise them if in the mood but I can’t remember when he last was in the mood. It’s a big ask of Iwobi who has mainly played at home it’s a big ask of Elneny having to anchor the midfield alongside Flamini and looking at the team I don’t think Hull will envisage being taken apart. Our main match winners are on the bench. But I remember being at Highbury and hearing Stepanovs and Luzhny announced as centre backs against Chelsea and we won that. I think Hull will fancy their chances and it may be a long night with penalties looming at the end.
Anyone know who’s reffing ?
Found it – Kevin Friend.
Oh well, at least it’s not Dodgy Dean
Come on Feo @14. Prove me wrong!
A friendly referee for once…
Ok..will see meself out!
but before that … COME ON!
Testing testing one two one two
Testing one two three
All right Johnny, it’s a go.
jeff willock? that’s deep.
i look forward to iwobi pulling the strings, and that we have ozil and alexis on the bench. i’m thinking i’d prefer to have hector on the bench rather than jeff w.
criminy, i’m wanting this to be a win so badly. saturday was such a disappointment. well, for the most part. the lad got into university in santa barbara, so at least we know he’ll be away from home starting from fall π
Yes Arthur, and I got 17/2 so very happy.
COYGs
Congrats to the lad, scruz. Well done him.
come on, you boys in red!!
cheers, bath. thanks, and we’re damn proud. it’s going to be an up and down month, still have six more to hear from…and i doubt he’ll shoot 100% π
already with the time wasting. ugh.
C’mon boys!!!
great work, calum.
Congrats on your son’s university getting into, scruz, and a good thing for the boy it is not too near and not too far. π
Crap Campbell
Come on lads make us proud!
Looks like Theo scored but he judged offside
Back to 4 forwards and 2 midfielders, it’s going to be a tough game again…
Congrats Scruz!
Na zdrowie ?
thanks, bt and arthur. na zdrowie, at least a couple of rounds on me. though once the college fees kick in, methinks water and the kindness of friends will be the intoxicants upon which i draw π
bt, it’s a perfect distance. and since my wife’s family has roots in 1880s goleta (the town where the uni is located), it’s also returning to history if he goes there.
bloody heads on the pitch. yowza. does per pass the concussion protocol?
There will be blood….
This is turning into bloodshed
Jesus what is happening there
Ospina is world class too isn’t he?
ospinaaaaa!
Can’t see the game but BBC website reports “bickering between Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.”
Stupid foul come on he was going no where
crap, per is done.
Giroud on his heels, too slow, booked.
What are they doing
Two players clash heads. The Arsenal man is injured the Hull guy is right as rain. Two bookings, a key injury and not a move worth the name in thirty minutes. Hull will be loving this
bt8 – Walcott made the correct run, Giroud played the wrong ball, Giroud had a cry at Walcott.
giroud put a pass where he expected walcott to be in the box, and walcott dove behind the defender, rather. they were jabbering about it.
nacho on for per. and now two quick yellows for elneny and giroud (stupide in giroud’s case, not particularly bright by elneny).
ttg, hull are definitely getting the game they want.
We’re so unbalanced it’s painful to watch at times.
Theo c’mon better corners ffs
nice corner, theo /eyeroll.
Get in
Giroud!!!
Gift goal but I will take it any day really
That’s how to open them up. Rely on Hull to do it
Oh Giroud u beauty
Scruz
Top notch corner come on nothing wrong with that lob
wooohooo!
Hull Shitty
Chocolate leg
lol, arthur.
and it’s that kind of luck/finishing we’ve been lacking. please bring more of that to the table, boys!
Website says Giroud scored. Can anybody confirm???????
Huh, nice shot Gibbo. Close
Yes bt8
oh, gibbsy. that was in if six inches lower.
Gibbs hits the bar, a game of inches.
Woo Hoo Giroud. Thanks, Arthur. π
theo’s overhitting them today. run, theo, run it off!
How do we look defensively without Mertesacker?
Bt8
Try this
http://ilivestream.com/soccer/hull-city-vs-arsenal-ils2jdo5
whew.
ok, if a little disorganized. i doubt monreal and gabriel have played together much even during scrimmage.
Na na na na na
Almost got caught, that is what we miss when Per is not playing.
So far have looked assured in defence without Per but the first set piece and we almost concede, bt8.
Oh dear, Theo. The harder you try the worse you get.
At half time ahead by a goal gifted by Hull.
Not great but not too bad either.
We are making it really hard for ourselves Theo’s head is back in London on his sofa playing PlayStation me thinks. Every time Hull has a free kick we look in trouble.
I hope we improve in the second half.
A gifted goal is just what the doctor ordered!
Good try from Gibbo as well
Is Walcott the captain?!
How bad is Per? Hope he’s allright for the weekend.
I like Iwobi.. intelligent passes.. now if we could just find someone with the confidence to shoot! ..and don’t tell me we have to rely on Gibbs!
We need to speed up on the break, shaky at the back, some awful crosses from Feo. We are in for a difficult watch in the second half.
COYRs
Iwobi looks to get on the ball and create and at times his unpredictability looks like paying dividends. Towards the end of the half we started to move the ball slickly and with the first touch and we looked much better. Most of the time I think we played with the handbrake on and the Krooklok too.
and we’re back at it. COME ON BOYS!
Monreal caught, nothing serious I hope.
if worse came to it matty could play right back and chambo in the middle. bring in ozil if that’s the case.
oh, elneny!
Gabby is done for the evening
gabby is hurt now? fuck.
aaron in for matty, who goes to right back, monreal in the middle with chambo. or?
Gabriel has a problem now, Ramsey, Adelaide warming up. What’s happening? Looks like Ramsey on for Gabriel. Chambers playing central now.
giroud for the brace?
What is Gabriel’s injury?
uh, no. terrible free kick.
Oh no- can you believe it. Another CB injured
TTG. IS that two or three now, or four including Kos?
Chamb and Nacho going central.
Oh boy. Just look at ’em.
Bt8, looks like a muscle injury for Gabriel, nothing very serious I hope.
Thighten up no need for Gibbs to chase the down ball
Rambo the savior!
Ramsey almost scores an own goal. That was close and for once there were more Hull attackers than our defenders near our box. A lot more open game now.
I think Theo has brought a note from his Mummy again tonight
Almost the second own goal in our last two games, between Ramsey and Gabriel. Not a good trend.
Get in. Giroud a brace
Giroud!!!!
Oh Giroud u beauty x 2
Chocolate leg x 2
That’s better Theo! Good finish Ollie
You’re kidding.
Come oooooooon!
Ramsey has a problem and is being replaced.
Bad luck x 3
Giroud!
π
Adelaide on. No more injuries please.
WTF!?!
Now Ramsey too!
We’ll be lucky if we can finish with 11….
Not a bad performance from their LB this evening.
Ramsey out injured too. Change something Wenger! Your training methods, the doctors, the pitch I don’t know what, just change something ffs, this is to much
Watford here we come!
Get in ya beauty!!!!!!!!
http://arsenalist.com/f/2015-16/hull-city-vs-arsenal/goaaal-olivier-giroud-0-2.html
Training methods for concussion prevention, really?
Few finally!!!!
Get in. Theo.
Walcott finally, first good touch of the match
Done and dusted, took a while for Walcott to find his stride but he’s killed the game!
Theo!
Que sera sera….
Feo not few.
Lovely ball, well taken Theo. Two nice goals this half
An injury for a goal eh? Is that the sacrifice the football gods want now?!!
GET IN THEO!
π
KABOOM
Theo x 2.
Walcott back to his best, this one is all his own!
Long time since we scored four. Bring on Watford.
Last time we scored four goals? Probably when we scored five at Leicester.
Finally he gets his finger out. He must have read my 41 π
@174 In a game where two of our players are forced out with muscular injuries you pick the third one that is a conclusion. Nice.
With these three we are at second place of the injury table. As I am not an expert, for me absolutely everything might be the reason for all those injuries over the years, including training methods I guess.
I see Jakupovic slowly turned from Jashin to Almunia.
Let’s enjoy the win. Much needed one.
well, that was an interesting second half. i was able to watch while on a conference call, boy, what a second goal by giroud. and both of theo’s have been pretty good, you’ve got to think hull have dropped a notch since giroud’s though.
what happened to aaron? hammy? looks like alex and the jeff will be getting some serious playing time.
We’re by faaaaaaar….
Theo MOTM with Chambers, Monreal and Elneny having done really well in an unfamiliar setup.
Watford time to quake in your boots!
More seriously too many injuries to truly rejoice though. Let’s hope it’s not too serious for Rambo, Mertesacker and Gabriel.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Well done Arsenal.
Good goals HFB and Feo.
Those prats with the sign should just fuck off though.
I see Iwobi and Adelaide getting more games.. the injury list is depressing!
Well Watford next then.. bring them on!
Oh and Elneny still needs more games.. I think he lacks a bit of pace if he is to play deep… and he gets turned too easily. But he’s good going forward!
Play Campbell and Iwobi!
π
We took care of the game very well in the second half and the emergency centre backs did well. Ospina was very solid too although he didn’t have too much to do. Like the look of Iwobi.
That’s appalling that banner. Why go all that way and unfurl that? Some ‘fans’ make me sick.
