Leicester Up Next And Win A 2016/17 Arsenal Shirt
Aug 19th, 2016 by 'holic
The vultures appear to be circling the Grove once more. One match into the season the harbingers of doom are making the most noise, and in all honesty it is hard to believe that we have been so reticent to bolster a squad decimated by injuries and enforced holidays. We are the first visitors to Leicester this season on Saturday evening, and both sides are seeking their first points of the new campaign.
There have been seasons where an early season visit to the reigning champions would have been an altogether scarier experience, and yes, that 8-2 is never far from the memory. Leicester’s defeat at newly promoted Hull last week is an indication that they, like so many more experienced and successful clubs before them, will find retaining the title much more difficult than winning it.
They lost only three matches in securing the trophy last season only we beat them twice and that will surely be in their minds. Then of course the sub-plots of the failed bid for Vardy, and did we really seek to sign Mahrez? Whatever, the pair of them have their improved deals with the Foxes. Good luck to them, but not immediately!
The loss of Aaron Ramsey and Alex Iwobi to the Shenley infirmary presents an opportunity for Santi Cazorla and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. If there are any unforced changes to the side humbled on the opening day then probably Laurent Koscielny will be rushed back into the centre of the defence, and Granit Xhaka might make his first Premier League start? The former is the likelier of the two.
My idle speculation would have Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud’s return to the squad on the bench. The boss has already hinted that he cannot start all three returnees.
“I will consider them for selection this weekend.Β Of course they have not played any games for a while, so I have to be selective and I cannot go for the three because that would be too risky. But basically with Laurent Koscielny I have no choice. If I have to take a gamble on one, it’s certainly on him.”
The presence of Giroud should prompt some reaction from Alexis, who did not look his energetic and enthusiastic self last week. The Chilean’s 47 minute hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last September proved decisive in our 2-5 triumph. Another positive result would raise the spirits on and off the pitch for the Gunners.
The ‘holic pound
A week into the season, and so my glass remains half full, even if the ale it contains has a hint of cloudiness about it. Have we the spirit and resilience to follow last season’s impressive win with something similar. Probably not. Another tense affair more akin to our last minute triumph at the Grove is more appealing. I have plumpedΒ for a repeat of the 2-1 Gunners triumph that day. You will find the Paddy Power odds for this, and the other Saturday fixtures, here.

Nice preview and I expect us to win tomorrow. Whoever loses will be crucified by the media as is the way nowadays. There are a lot of people hoping Arsenal lose tomorrow and many of them purport to be Arsenal fans. What crazy times we live in. I think the pressure will be eased slightly by a 2-0 win. Xhaka MOTM

Thanks Holic! π
I’m hearing Lacazette has scored his 5th goal in 2 games. Hardly average returns!
Nice preview Guvna. Any kind of win will have me ecstatic.
Go win Arsenal.
Just watched a brilliant performance by the GB Ladies Hockey team.
Won the Olympic Gold medal after beating Champions Holland on penalties after a 3-3 draw in normal time.
Went through the entire Tournament unbeaten, and showed a fantastic never say die/refuse to lose team spirit.
Their semi final win over New Zealand was more like a rugby match than Hockey, players in the sin bin, full on body contact,it was like a war zone, but they prevailed through sheer force of will, and did the same in the Final.
Now if only the Arse could rediscover the same, although i fear we don’t have enough players in the squad who absolutely hate Fucking losing. !!
In Olympics news, Great Britain women down the Dutch for gold, going 2-0 in the shoot out!
Interesting way to do the shoot out, similar to what was tried in the North American League of the New York Cosmos vintage. Go right to the shootout immediately after full time.
Five shooters as in PKs, but ball is placed at a line outside the penalty area and each shooter has eight seconds to attempt to put the ball in vs the keeper, who can come out to challenge. If the shot is saved, the shooter can still recover and try again provided there’s still time left in the eight seconds. And. one of the goals was scored on a penalty shot, when the Dutch keeper brought down the shooter illegally in the box.
Would something like this arrangement be preferable to PKs?
Good evening Clive and Jean, that was special viewing, and I only watched the second-half and shoot-out. π
Excellent hockey!
What a match! Anywhere online I can watch the GB vs NZ match?
Time to catch up on that one!
The amount of gold medals being won, you’d think the olympics were in London!
π
3 points.
Any which way.
An own-goal rebound of Vardy’s arse would be rather preferable though.
Evening Clive.
I watched the same Hockey game, after suffering 45mins of mind numbing friday-night depression at Old Toilet. Admittedly, I know nothing about Hockey, but it was most entertaining.

Team GB look like exceeding medal haul form London, which would be some feat.
Nick Skelton was superb winning the Individual show jumping gold medal today as well.
We still have Boxers in Gold medal boxing to come,as well as MO the Gooner going for the double double in the 5,000 metres.
Going to be a fantastic finish to the games.
Joe,
A severe reprimand and a 100 hrs of community service for not only covertly watching Manure, but actually admitting it. !!
Heh Clive,
I can assure you – in general, I am not a fan of the “Olympics”.
I think David Walsh puts it rather succinctly in his comment about Almaz Alyana’s shattering of the 10,000m World Record: “We can’t accuse because there’s no evidence………and we can’t believe because there’s no trust…”
The Olympics has fallen off the precipice and is no longer relevant in my sporting cosmos. And football, sadly, is galloping towards the same conclusion. Love to see Wenger go out on a high though, even if just for all the shit he gets for acting in a moderately sane and proper manner.

‘enforced’ holidays, ‘holic? It happens every year for one reason or another. Don’t we pay them enough to turn up for work on time?
When their footballing time is up they can take a permanent holiday for the rest of their lives – assuming they have invested their mercenary millions wisely, which admittedly is a major assumption.
Apropos the women’s hockey gold we could do worse than stick Maddie Hinch in centre back cos nothing gets past that wonderwall.
And the team spirit wouldn’t go amiss either.

Good to see Joel has secured a loan so he’ll get some game time.
I see a lot of goals in tonight’s match. Hopefully we won’t be sitting back and relying on counter-attacking, you need a capable defence to do that.
Time for Alexis to pull his weight.
Arrived back in Blighty late on Friday afternoon so somewhat jet lagged.
Nice preview H. I also enjoyed watching the girls hockey last night. True spirit. Unlike some I love the Olympics, I always have. The events in London were amazing and team GB have again been brilliant. All very enjoyable I must say.
I have no idea what will happen today. I’m sure that Vardy will be wanting nothing more than to put one passed us. I also think that we were in for Mahrez also I’m not sure how far that went. Our lack of readiness is something I still find ridiculous and very much avoidable.
I have no idea which Arsenal will turn up today. I’m hoping that it’s the one that wants to show fight and what’s necessary to win a game. As for the remaining 10 days of the window?????? Who knows????
Here’s to hopefully 3 points.
I don’t know what I’m dreading more, the game or the bloody quiche that is my choice of evening meal (it was in the freezer and has to go).
In the mean time, whether you agree or not with the article it is an interesting read with some valid points IMO. It’s not every day you get Italo Calvino, Samuel Becket and George Allison mentioned in the same article. Bloody Guardian…
https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2016/aug/19/arsene-wenger-arsenal-story-final-unhappy
Bent-tekkers signs for Crystal Palace.
I don’t think he’s that great, personally, and quite relieved we didn’t go for him.
The Kings Lynn Gooners are on tour to Leicester and we can only hope for the best. I liked the look of Holding last week so he may well get the slot along side Kos. Let’s have Mo and Granit holding and Santi, Ox, Feo and Alexis going forward. I suspect Ozil and the HFB will make the bench along with Campbell?
Just hope we have a good day out and a win and don’t run into the the anti crowd who make things unpleasant for the rest of us and certainly don’t help the players on the pitch who we need to give us a much needed 3 points.
COYRs
I would hope Ozil in for Iwobi and Cazorla replacing Ramsey would be the only changes unless he brings Koscielny out of his cotton wool cocoon. Suppose we might see Feo shift along the line to start up top and Alexis go wide, as he looked disinterested last week and not comfortable through the middle. To me.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/20160818/-he-has-similar-qualities-to-suarez-
well, another day with Sanchez upfront is on the cards. the only prediction am making this afternoon.
If it is an either /or, would you prefer we bolster our defence or concentrate on reinforcing our attack?
Curious to see opinions on this…
..and Aguero needs to get an injury..soon!
π
@BB48
…as soon as yesterday. makes you think “what if we had such assured reliance on a CF. “
A young, intelligent and determined Pep Guardiola already showing Arsene Wenger how the principles of modern “total football” should be engendered within a squad of players in English Football playing at Mordor!
AFCOF!
So Joel is going out on loan again. Hope that means we are close to signing at least one more established forward. Otherwise it is a risky proposal given the injury records of Theo and Ox. For that matter even Jack because he could be another option. Hope this doesn’t mean Rambo on the right.
Given what had transpired last season a safer and fairer move would have been for Ox to go out on loan to a mid-level club and demonstrate consistency and the ability to stay fit throughout the season while Joel staying in to fight for his place.
Joel Campbell out on loan??? Nonsensical! ?
From what I have seen of Joel Campbell he has bags of heart, bags of effort but is short of quality. Great attitude but at the moment he is nowhere near good enough in my opinion. The signing of players like Campbell is typical of all that is very wrong with Arsenal at the moment. If we want to sign players with a view to developing them into to first team players then I’m all for it. But for that to succeed you need to have a top quality first team so that there can be a staged and natural progression.
A loan will tell us if he has the ability to make it or not.
City win 4-1 and are still very much a work in progress.
Steve T,
Absolutely! But Joel’s already been put out on loan three times before again now! How long will our club under Arsene Wenger keep on doing that, and surely a loan in the EPL would make more sense than in Europe yet again?! Also, what about the other seemingly “not-ready players” in Arsene’s eyes and assessment? Why keep them hanging around twiddling their thumbs?
Steve @ 53: It is all about consistency in performance in my humble opinion. And also tactical discipline and attitude. You will almost always get a 6-7/10 out of Joel, whereas Ox or even Theo tend to have too many 3-4 days when they don’t even show the discipline to overcome their poor touches or misplaced passes. Joel is a better passer than both of them, has a better first touch, and has the right discipline to play on the wings, always giving his fullback support. While Theo is a much better finisher and Ox is much more powerful especially in 1:1 situations they haven’t really put their qualities together consistently in last season whereas as the season progressed Joel got better.
I agree with you that right now he is not a starter for a Team with PL wining aspirations. But he is a more reliable option from bench than a few of his teammates who will stay, and evidently a much fitter athlete.
Oh to have courted and managed to attract Guardiola. Man City look completely different from any team in the league already in how they approach and execute the game and in tactics that aren’t in practice anywhere else in the league. Even formerly “brainless” players are playing like experienced hands and he hasn’t had that much time with them.
Dr F @55 too true.
So Liverpool is down two nil @ Burmley just goes to show how prepared AW is!
Not sure what it is but I’m really worried about this Leciester game later on!
ATG,
Burnley tactically tearing the Klippity Kloppsters a new one!
The Foxes’ pace is going to be key if Arsene Wenger doesn’t pay them the defensive respect they deserve, just like Hull did last weekend.
Dapper Dan and the Doc.
I agree with a lot of that apart from Joel be a 7/10. I just don’t think he’s good enough. He may be a better passer than Theo but his Theo good enough? This is a massive season for AOC. Like Jack he needs to stay fit and he needs to produce this year. We have been a side for years that has been full of alleged potential. However, how many actually make that final step?
I’ve said for some time now that I feel the squad is massively over populated with what I would call squad players.
Steve T @60,
Agreed! It’s a massive season for everyone, especially for the man at the head of it all for these wee lads have been his charges for quite some time, and for a decade in Theo’s case! ?
The real thing:
Cech, Bellerin, Holding, Koscielny, Monreal, Xhaka, Coquelin, Walcott, Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sanchez
Subs: Ospina, Gibbs, Wilshere, Giroud, Ozil, Chambers, Elneny
Looks like you made a good decision about coming back for the competition, Gregoire. (Barring any warm-up accidents!) π
Good stuff ‘Holic! Didn’t foresee Holding getting the nod over Chambers. That must show either how much he’s impressed Wenger so far or the doubts AW must still have over Calum at CB.
Here’s hoping we can put Leicester to the sword again (I think our bench might prove handy in the latter part of the game)…
Come on.
COME ONNNN!
C’mon boys three points.
How do you like them apples, Vardy.
You cunt.
I’m watching the game and suddenly thought to myself, last year Sanchez scored a hattrick playing from the left. And Walcott was playing central striker. Interesting how Wenger tinkered so much in a year, and yet Alexis so far is cutting a frustrated figure up front.
Are both Walcott and Sanchez square pegs in a round hope up front? I hope our manager gets it right in the 2nd half.
COYG!
Nice one Cech!
Come On!!
Good point Derrick
Don’t know who the guy is with the Sanchez mask on actually
Take Coq off!
Theo has headed away a corner and come back forty yards to muscle a Leicester man off the ball.
Coquelin needs to be subbed or we wil be down to ten
Does Le Coq actually possess a bran??? Does he remember that he picked up a yellow in the first half???
Brain even.
To be fair he does look constipated.
π
Full of shit.
??
On Coq, does the coach know that he is on a yellow card? Subbing Dhaka instead of Coq. Oh my!!
I would love to know the thinking that takes Granit X off and leaves Le Coq on? Really don’t get that one.
Giroud loves coming in from the bench. Come on. One nil to the Arsenal!
You can play the early ball occasionally, lads. You don’t have to go square all the fucking time.
And when we do play it early, we’re in.
Too much faffing about. Get the fucking crosses over
Can a man in yellow please take a shot?
Definite pelanty but do we care?
Can’t Akpom do better than Sanchez up front? If we have to suffer through the manager’s internal solutions, he should at least give a proper striker a chance.
Not great, got away with the pelanty, Koscielny was excellent.
The End.
We did miss Kos..glad he’s back!
And Sanchez had a game to forget in my opinion. He’s a world beater for Chile and Wenger is yet to get the best out of him in the past year.
Anyhow we got away with a couple penaltys today.
Got away with a point. Not quite sure how. I hope those that will undoubtably moan about how we get the rough end of a decision remember this one.
Kos our MOTM. Very little real punch up front, not that this will be a surprise anyone.
I thought we looked slightly better after the changes but we still look under cooked.
Sanchez can’t be our striker solution. Get a fucking striker or play Akpom. Cheap ass Wenger. It’s not your fucking money.
What is scary is that next week Wenger will start Giroud up front again and we are back to where we were last year.
I really hope Akpom gets a chance to prove himself, he seems to have the hunger at least.
And I agree with SAG about Sanchez. One of his worse games as an Arsenal player and I don’t even think it was his fault, up against big defenders with not much room to play.
Two games in and Sanchez is just running around like a headless chicken. We lose our edge playing him out of position. Theo/Sanchez/Oz are not and will never be our striker issue solution. I don’t get it. How a man can be this fucking stubborn because you help build a stadium.
Sanchez sucks as a striker…that experiment should be put to bed. losing patience with Walcott. is it me or did xhaka look so one-dimensional?
Phew!
A point at last year’s champions isn’t a bad result but they are clearly not going to be champions again this year.
That was very jammy at the end. Clattenberg had an excellent game and got everything right except the Musa decision and the Coquelin card which was a stonewall pen. We can’t complain about the referee today that’s for certain.
Defensively we looked much better with Koscielny outstanding and I thought Holding was very sound. Xhaka wasn’t MOTM as I predicted but he did pretty well. Theo worked extremely hard but Sanchez was awful and either can’t play through the middle, is struggling with that ankle injury or as I suspect is unhappy at the club. I watched him
last week and his body language was very negative.
Because of his horror show upfront I found it hard to fathom our tactics. Were we playing a false 9 or did Sanchez just wander out of the middle?
The club needs a lift and a good win at Watford with everyone back will start that process but it is clear where we could do with reinforcement on the pitch. The unrest at the end is sadly going to recur regularly unless results pick up. If Arsene isn’t able to strengthen in this window he will need the hide of a rhinoceros. I would urge even the Wenger out brigade to give it a rest until after the window.
Last year’s 1 and 2 looking like this years 7 and 8?
I didn’t see much on display today that will strike fear into the big boys.
Tactically clueless yet again! Lucky to get a point!
Hull is the new Leicester!
π
Sets it up
Buy Someone! Anyone!
π
Best 100 EVAH!
ended the game with three attacking midfielders in ozil, carzola, willshere, n no striker? we will finish this season with suicide notes!!!
Good point away against the champions. I would have settled for that before kick-off following last week’s disappointing result. We got lucky with Coquelin’s second yellow card and the Musa penalty, but overall I thought we were the better team. The defence played very well especially in the centre and once Ozil came on I thought our passing and creativity were much slicker and we could have nicked it. I haven’t thrown in the towel yet. This season looks wide open to me and once we click into gear, hopefully next week, we will be right up there.
PS Holding is probably worth Β£40 million now.
Extremely surprised that Wenger is persisting with Alexis up top, thereby wasting the skillset of our most dangerous forward player over the last 2 years. I was never one for this clamour to play him there after a supposedly “successful” pre-season. People were so quick to forget how mediocre Alexis was when he had a run of games at CF in his first month at the club. He’s only 5′ 7″ so struggles with all those balls up to him, and he’s so much better facing up defenders and coming in from one of the flanks.
Also – I defended Wenger last season but there really is no excuse this time round for not strengthening the side. Last season was categoric proof that we’re just not quite good enough in all departments from being top-level (especially up front). For all their individual merits, you won’t win the league with Giroud and Walcott alone, and I think the Ox will never make it at the top, top level – he’s a player capable of the odd flash of inspiration but he offers nowhere near enough end-product for a front 3 players and lacks football intelligence.
We need a couple of new signings to strengthen the squad but – almost as importantly now – to lift the squad, the club and the profile of the club. To give the current players a bit of momentum and belief. Otherwise, I think we’ll see the front-runners move away from us very quickly now and we’ll be in the also-rans battle for 4th.
Drab game all in all, save for the last 10 mins.
The midfield has yet to function properly, but as soon as Ozil and Wilshere came on the game opened up (in both directions to be fair). We haven’t found the right balance yet, and a striker will provide much needed relief, including from the fans π
If we can string a run of wins and play with less pressure, that may allow the team to gel, including Sanchez up front. Let’s see.

With no disrespect have you gone completely bonkers?
This was yet another abysmal display if you ask me, we are lucky but what we should be doing is winning games like these no questions asked.
Leicester will not win the league this time around, we have not prepared for yet another start of the season where we should be flying. Showing other teams we mean business, instead we show exactly how weak and fragile we have become.
Theo and Ox will never be world class players as they have shown season after season that incapable of taking on players 1-1. Theo’s first touch is painful to look at. His decision making even worse.
I completely disagree with some above that Campbell is worse then those two! He is miles better!
Civility please, all. Thank you. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
