Strangely Downbeat Gunners Miss Top Spot Opportunity
Nov 7th, 2016 by 'holic
The absurdly early start to make the North London derby in time did nothing to dissolve my confidence ahead of the match. On arrival to find out that Nacho Monreal and Theo Walcott had passed fitness tests, and that Alli was ruled out by injury, only added to the feel good factor.
We took our seats and the crowd were commendably silent as the last post was played by an accomplished army bugler. It was atmospheric but as soon as the match got going the two tribes were at each other again. With Tottenham fielding three defensive midfielders Arsenal were expected to press them high and quickly with the gusto that blew Chelsea away. That didn’t transpire.
A couple of years ago Mark Clattenburg was the best referee on the PGMOL list, but in the last year or so he has been criticised after high profile matches. Again yesterday he found himself in the firing line after the match. One cannot help but feel that if Francis Coquelin had tackled Wimmer in the manner that the Austrian took him out that the colour of the card might have been different.
As it happened the referee had done us a favour, and Wimmer went on to give us the lead when his header beyond the reach of Lloris settled in the corner of the net. A WhatsApp message informed me at half-time that two Gunners were in an offside position but the officials missed it. Another one in our favour. Wanyama got away with a number of fouls throughout, a couple of which looked worse than the challenge that saw Granit Xhaka sent off against Swansea.
Before the break our best moments other than the goal were Theo Walcott’s fierce drive against the woodwork, and a rare but thrilling break at pace which ended with Alex Iwobi’s sidefooted effort being comfortably pouched by Loris. With a half-time advantage there was still a feeling that we could build on that and go at the neighbours to put the match beyond doubt.
That didn’t happen either. Xhaka is a wonderful footballer but I think he found the intensity of his first North London derby a bit overawing. Iwobi too has looked a little tired in the last couple of weeks. Tottenham were possibly surprised with the ease at which they were able to advance with the ball. They too were not at their best, thankfully.
The equaliser was another controversial moment. I will say from my vantage point nearly half a pitch away that it looked as though Koscielny had brought down Dembélé, another escaping punishment for persistent fouling. The neighbour-for-the-season checked with the press box on the way out and there was more than a suspicion of a dive there. I can understand why Clattenburg gave it and we should have dealt with that by responding to Kane’s goal better.
Aaron Ramsey came on for Coquelin, surely for an injury as the Frenchman had been one of our better players to that point. Rambo fired two efforts over the top but it was Eriksen who twice came closest to pilfering the points, first with a drive that Cech saved superbly, and then with a free-kick against a post.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was sent on for a bizarre cameo, and Olivier Giroud gave us another option but we couldn’t sustain any pressure on the visitors and both sides seemed to content to see out the draw. A most unsatisfactory ending.
The earliness of the kick-off allowed an extended post mortem in splendid company. The spirits lifted as the delicious drinks hit the spot and friends lifted each other again. Three NLD stalemates in a row now. Let’s hope Arsene can celebrate a success over Pochettino in the return fixture at the pointed end of the season.

Back after an outage?
Fair report guv’nor.
Is the interlull over yet?
COYG
Sorry if there was an outage P.
Good morning ex-neighbour. 🙂
As a much as I want to believe otherwise, our team is just not good enough to win the PL. We are still struggling with players who do not have the consistent finesse to score goals when opportunities arise.
As good as Sanchez is, he surrenders the ball on most occasions when put under pressure. Is this not maybe why Barcelona did not really resist Sanchez’s purchase by us too strongly? It is hard to accept that in spite of all our brilliant plays that we still do not have the required balance nor a killer striker in our team.
Cheers Guv. Nice report.
I’ve enjoyed this week in the bar, it would have been nice to cap it off with a win. Oh well.
I’m glad I got to see us play, and share a few virtual drinks with some old friends. I dunno wen i’ll next pop in but i’ll look forwards to it. Best bar there is. Drinks for all. Tip of the cap to the Landlord.
COYG
Cheers GSD, 🙂
Fine report Guvna. Much as I saw it. More work to do on this team if we are to recapture our heights.
Haste ye back GSD. You’ll be missed.
From the amount of head shaking going on and the look on his face as he went off, Coquelin wasn’t injured.
Only one player was offside (Kos was level) but Howard Webb said it was a legal goal so … he can be right occasionally 😉
Agreed, bath.
I would point out, however, that “our heights” were a team that won the League, going the season unbeaten. It comes as no surprise to me that we aren’t at those levels.
A more important question, to my mind at least, is “Are we as good as, or better than, the teams around us”. The jury is still out on that one and will probably remain out until May. Between now and then, there will be people around telling us that a verdict has been returned but that rarely happens before late April at the earliest. Strap in, guys, the season has another six-and-a-half months to go.
COYG
Very good summary Guvna. I wouldn’t take issue with anything. I think the days when the Spuds rolled over are behind us with Poc organising them well.
I thought it was a penalty , albeit a harsh one at the time but watching on TV it was hard for Clattenberg to call it so definitely. My big beef is that knowing they were playing three at the back it took thirty minutes to adjust to that. I saw Theo say that they had not realised they were playing three at the back when apparently Poc announced it on TV forty five minutes before kick off! That smacks of very poor preparation and intelligence on our part and it could have derailed us. It makes me wonder how much we look at the opposition before we play them . I know Arsene encourages the team to focus on their own game but yesterday was a case in point where we could have very usefully prepared to play against a different system.
I think this season the lack of CL football will be a huge advantage to Poo and the Chavs although the CL break should hopefully begin for us in late November and resume in March. We still have a decent chance but we will need to be better at winning the tight games at home ?We
Are we genuine title contenders? at the moment the frank answer is no. Why? because we seem to be coming short at the same moments and the same points. We are good when allowed to play and not so when squeezed. This may be the case with most other teams as well but ones who want to league will find a way out, don’t they? I am not basing this out of yesterday but collectively over the season, though just 1/3 into it.
Boro showed the same and now so did spurs. Again it does not mean we should win all games but it should feel like we can and frankly yesterday’s second half did not indicate that to me.
It is tiring playing two games a week or is it? travel takes its toll but were we so exhausted? again this may read like a complaint but honestly, why were we so flat in the second half is a mystery to me. Individually or collectively as a team, we do not seem to have an answer when the going gets tough. Aren’t these times when we have your match winners stepping up? frankly, we have 2 in terms or Ozil and Sanchez and maybe that is not enough.
The game at old trafford must be treated as a must win. Not because of the points involved nor is it a season defining one but it is more a statement of intent and determination that we can do it. The game is all about skill, hard work, efficiency etc but all that will come to nothing if your attitude does not match. We need to play the game like it is a matter of life and death and only then we shall succeed.
The ride stopped running on Sunday afternoon temporarily, at the hands of the filth!
Anyway, time to scrap it out with the Mancs after the break, whilst the others handle their more do-able fixtures!
COYR
The Spuds have West Ham and then Chelsea at the Bus Stop. That will be a very interesting match . Amazingly both games are at 5.30. That suggests TV has more influence than the police. We even had a policeman in each carriage on our tube yesterday !
Interestingly lots of stats around today putting Xhaka in a good light, so I’ll watch again. All I can say is that in real time from Row 7 near the halfway line he didn’t impress at all and Coquelin’s efforts were greater. Expect a retraction later!
Seriously, not a pop at him. He’ll be an excellent signing and he will be all the better for having experienced the biggest of all derby days.
Bloody hell, guv’nor. Is a statement that a player “found the intensity of his first North London derby a bit overawing” based on personal impressions so coruscating a criticism that it needs to be formally retracted if it turns out to differ from others’ impressions? Surely not! For shame.
Who was it who first told us that this bar runs on differing opinions, respectfully expressed?
COYH, Come on you Holics
The problem is while watching a game its tough to assess everybody. Especially a very intense London Derby. Steve T and I saw Nacho differently but agreed on Iwobi and Coquelin. I liked Xhaka yesterday despite the fact that their midfield did very well. He has a real touch of class and is a very good buy
We missed an opportunity to beat the spuds emphatically and show our detractors that we are serious contenders to win the league. In fact we may have strengthened those arguing that we have no chance of winning it. We were strangely lethargic and were out passed and physically bullied and we rarely play well against teams which are in our faces.
I also thought Kos was stupid to stick his leg out and Dembele took advantage, hit Kos and fell over and the ref awarded the penalty with great alacrity; just like Vardy got his penalty against us last year.
Based on this evidence we are not winning the league though I hope the boys prove me wrong. The next match is against Manure and AW has never beaten Mourinho in the league. November may again turn out to be when it all unravels once again.
I thought Xhaka was quietly effective. Unspectacular and very self-controlled. When I saw he was starting I was somewhat fearful that he might not finish the game such is the passion associated with the NLD compounded by his committed tweets and his reputation. All in all, a satisfactory NLD debut IMHO.
Dembele definitely went looking for the penalty. It certainly looks from the video clips that his shoulder hit Kos’s chest before Kos’s foot hit his.
He’ll be an excellent signing and he will be all the better for having experienced the biggest of all derby days.
Did I miss El Clasico this weekend? 🙁
😉
Toatally agree Regards Xhaka. I also thought he was poor in the flesh, but reports said he was better than that.
Elneny should start against Man Ure.
Granit is, or will be, great but I think Mohamed is a bit more serious with the ball.
With Xhaka is more like, well… juvenile approach to football.
He’ll be good though. No doubt about that.
Much ado about nothing from both sides,
Plenty of huff and puff, bluff and bluster,
Technical skills non existent,
Calmness under pressure, nowhere to be seen,
Boro, and now Spuds, have played the same defensive system, and found us clueless.
Both of them could easily have gone away with the 3 pts.
They say one player doesn’t make a team, well the little fella with the dancing feet, has been sorely missed since getting injured, and it is clear he makes us better when he plays.
You can bet your life the Coaching staff at PSG will have noticed how ineffectual we have been against a well set up defence.
Fingers crossed Santi is back not only for that game, but also the Utd game.
Worth pointing out yet again, after a CL midweek round, not one of the 4 English clubs involved, won this w/end.
H – Joe Baker alert http://www.onlinegooner.com/article.php?section=exclusive&id=3544#.WCD9CktqjwI
On TV, from about half way around the world less than Chris’ TV that is, Coquelin looked better than Xhaka but on another issue Santi almost always looks world class.
Pleased to see you’re back up now, ‘holic. Missed the opportunity to have my say yesterday, which is probably just as well!
In brief:
1. When Mesut and Alexis both choose to take the same day off we’re pretty much stuffed.
2. It was 100% a pen, Kos stuck his leg across whoever it was, missed the ball, caught the leg. Kos had a very unKoslike game, getting a number of things badly wrong.
3. Yes we had at least two players ‘offside’, but they weren’t strictly interfering with Wimmer who would always have headed the ball in the circumstance.
4. Starting XI was wrong. As I said in http://goonerholic.com/2016/11/oziliant-last-gasp-comeback-by-the-arsenal/#comment-617595 when arguing who should make way for OG to start “Iwobi hasn’t had the same spark in recent games and is inneffective in front of goal, so needs to regroup before he can deliver on his undoubted promise. And Ox has never been good enough, imo“.
5. An inch to the left and Theo’s effort would probably have inspired us to proper great things.
I predicted that ‘bounce of the ball’ could well decide the result and we could have been luckier during the period we were on top. But we should also have played a lot better!
That’s a good memory Cynic @24. Someone who recalls some of the stars of the sixties and has a decent word for Ian Ure, much maligned, in my view.
Agree with your #25, bt8. Le Coq has surprised me this season with consistently good displays, and fewer reckless tackles. Altogether a classier player I find hard to fault lately.
As for Santi he is just the guy we need when our other creatives go missing.
Watched the first half earlier. Have now watched the second half. I’m standing by what I saw from first viewing in the ground.
Telling that Adrian Clarke on co-commentary thought Rambo would replace Granit, not the Coq. To be fair though I thought Xhaka took over the Coq role superbly when that change was made. That subtlety I didn’t pick up on as we urged the boys forward to get the win. It got a bit emotional, even in Block 32!
On the rerun I am also impressed at the performance of both fullbacks who were clearly targeted by the neighbours. It says a lot about the game that we are debating whether our defensive midfielders or fullbacks were our best players, and yet Tottenham didn’t play well either.
I also don’t understand how Wanyama was allowed to make so many fouls, and yes, two at least in the Xhaka red category. 🙁
Agree with much of the above. Hard to believe that we can’t get up for a NLD and that raises some big concerns.
I know that he has his set ways of using his subs (70 minutes) but when the whole performance is so listless I wish that Arsene would make a change at half time to inject more energy and break the pattern. I wanted to see Elneny come on with his enthusiasm and give and go style to liven things up.
It has been said for a few weeks now but Iwobi is not currently worth his starting place but neither is the Ox. I suspect that we’ll be seeing a lot more of Rambo but that doesn’t really thrill me either – how often has he scored from distance versus the countless wasted blazes into the crowd? Someone needs to tell him to pull his head in and leave out the Hollywoods.
United will be fired up by you know who for the next game and we need to make sure our approach is spot on if we are to avoid another defeat at the hands of the massive-headed one. Hurry back Santi, please.
UTA.
Look at it as an opportunity to speed his exit from the Prem twice within a year, Noosa.
Cheers H!
Another fucking interlull.
Dunno if anyone was worried about Ibra in our next, given his habit of scoring against us … but he’ll be suspended from the match after picking up another yellow at the weekend. Awww, what a shame…
Chris@28: Santi is the guy who prevents our other creatives going missing. Badly missed. As he was when injured last season.
Thanks Cynic. Good work by Graham. ?
Noosa
I don’t think we weren’t up for the Derby by any means. The players were very committed but spent the first half hour coming to terms with the Spurs sustenance. In the fifteen minutes before half time we blew them away and scored one and could have had more.
Our second half performance was more listless. I think having ended the half on the front foot we started the second with a mindset that we had control of the game and tried not to push forward in numbers. This is when S***s equalised because they chased the game energetically. We ended on the front fbbt again. There was no lack of effort but mentally we appeared a bit confused.

If true then it is a tremendous step in the right direction, now we just need Alexis and Ozil to sign on..!
Keeping who we have while adding one or two quality players every season should put us in good stead to win the cup/s in the next couple of years.
Oh and… Whatever happened to Leicester? Varddy who?
(although i hope they do well in the CL)
😀
Good afternoon everybody 🙂
Does anybody know why there is no information at all on ticketsale for the UCL game against Basel?
Kos and Santi need to sign extensions too, though getting Alexis and Mesut to sign is priority.
Noosa
I of course meant Spurs formation and not sustenance!
Alexis injured and could miss around six weeks.

There’s a very famous couple of team photos that I cannot find online with Google. Can anyone tell me where to find them?
The first one is shot from behind. There’s a group of photographers taking the standard team photo with the team all on chairs, but Charlie George is looking over his shoulder at the camera man who has “gone around the back, matron”
The second is of the 1971 team I think, lined up in the goal mouth at the Clock End.
I had both of these once upon a time and I think they’re both Getty shots, but I cannot find them. It doesn’t matter if they are watermarked.

Thanks for the goalmouth shot. Cheeky Charlie left to find..
As long as we don’t lose at the hands of the Mancs, we should be okay!
Sanchez has gone in the fetlock 🙁

What is the prognosis for a ‘ low- grade muscle tear’?
Holic@29
A “Coq role” means something very different in certain areas of the capital.
North of the border you can even get them deep fried in batter??? Just ask out Caledonian friends who frequent this fine establishment.
🙂
Evening all. Not much to add to the previous post and to the above. It was definitely a penalty and a bit silly from Kos I thought. Le Coq does what he does very well. He is constantly 100% and always working for the team. However, creatively I think he is limited. This is where others will come to the party.
The game for me lacked any real quality. There were numerous errors from both sides. The fact that the game ended 1 all with a pen and an OG tells you all you need to know.
Great news about Hector if true. Awful news about Sanchez if true.
Let’s hope that everyone else comes back in one piece.

The good news for Chile and Arsenal fans is Sanchez only has a minor muscle complaint and will play next week against Uruguay.

u are gay
Esso, I am not overjoyed by the news that Chile think they can patch Alex up to play early next week. Sounds like a recipe for making a minor muscle tear a major one.
I received my member”s handbook today. Fascinating reading and lots of stats although it will. Ever replace Ned’s monks! The amazing thing is the number of coaching and medical staff we now have for the first team and youths. The cost of this group must be ginormous. We have three masseurs, an analyst , a soft tissue specialist and several fitness and conditioning coaches. A far cry from the days when Fred Street ran on with the sponge and did most of the physiotherapy too. It’s a huge overhead but doesn’t include the bloke we signed from Leicester who does the video scouting. There are an awful lot of mouths to feed who don’t kick a ball for the club and that doesn’t include Ivan’s backroom staff. Now I know what Arsene was referring to when he referred to the number of staff Arsenal had to pay.
So Sanchez is either out for 6 weeks or 6 days.
Meanwhile Jack is, by all accounts, as fit as he’s been for years and playing as well as he has for years … for Bournemouth.
Chris
He should be out for 6 weeks but Chile will play him in 6 days and he will then be out for 6 months. That’s the way it usually works.
My thought exactly, TTG.
TTG,
I didn’t see anything different about Spuds formation from their midweek game which I posted here was truly awful and Leverkusen battered them. To say it then took us half an hour to work it out suggests we were hopelessly underprepared which would beg the question why?
Apart from the fifteen minutes before half time we seemed clueless and apart from a Giroud header I cannot remember Loris having to make a save in the second period.
The pairing of Coq and Xhaka may give us some defensive solidity but our energy and creativity suffers accordingly which is why I wanted to see Elneny at half time.
UTA.
We’ll get more offensive quality from Xhaka once he learns to Xhakaboooom instinctively, rather than hesitating as he has clearly been doing lately. The crowd needs to stop telling him to shoot every time he’s within 35 yards, it’s putting him in two minds.
So it’s Trump then?! along with Brexit and cubs and AllBlacks lost to Ireland….
Must be the year we win the CL and the League!
Always look on the bright side of life…
😀
The world’s officially gone mad, BB.
@63
You are assuming that we will survive until the final?
on behalf of my fellow Americans, I apologise.
what a long night this is going to be. and an even longer interlull.
rye, please, and leave the bottle on the bar.
Defender Hector Bellerin has signed a new six-year deal with Arsenal to make him one of the club’s top earners.
Bellerin has put pen to paper on a deal worth in the region of £100,000 per week, inclusive of bonuses.
The news comes as a massive boost for Arsenal, who have successfully fought off interest from Barcelona and Manchester City to keep hold of the 21-year-old.
————
If true then it is indeed good news!
They would have double what we offered…
Holic’s Brother in Arms with a magnificent post on Arseblog this morning.
Highly recommended.
I heartily agree G54, Bloggs has expressed my sentiments far better than I ever could.
Thrilled Hector has signed up, I expect he would have played at Wembley
had the game not clashed with the return leg of Spain’s U21s play-off match for the Euros against Austria.
The news from Chile is worrying, we can only hope for the best that common sense might ? prevail. Please don’t tell me that’s wishful thinking!
COYRs
Morning all,
Some time at last ! The bar was down when I tried a few days ago and time hasn’t permitted since.
Thanks for the report, Holic,
Pretty much matched my impression from Block 91, first and foremost that Wimmer’s tackle committed at any other point in the game, or by Coquelin himself, would have resulted in a red card. Dembele should have had at least a yellow, which would have curtailed his ‘enthusiasm’ to our advantage.
The latter also ran straight at the defenders on the edge of the area, looking for the contact he got and over he duly went.
It was interesting to see the ease with which he went down in light of the comment by Danny Murphy on MoTD2 that “he is so strong that he likes to feel other players around him”. He certainly felt plenty of ours during the 90 minutes.
It’s one of those “seen them given” but for me, it was a dive. If nothing else, I have to disagree with Chris ! ?
All excuses and blaming referees ?
No. We had a couple of very good chances which should have been enough to secure the points but, as usual, they went begging. What is also worryingly “as usual” is that with Man City dropping points and a chance to go top of the league, we turned in a rather disjointed display and failed to take advantage. That old mental block still appears to be there.
On Xhaka: He looked to me to be playing a very suppressed version of his usual game – probably the result of that ridiculous red card which, I imagine, has made him wonder exactly what he is, and isn’t, allowed to do. He has a naturally aggressive game, apart from a very classy left foot, and should just get on with playing it. Cut out the wild stuff for sure but not allow himself to become inhibited. We did just fine with Patrick Vieira’s hardness and will do just fine with Xhaka’s. It’s a quality we’ve missed for too long.
TTG,
What can we expect of a “low grade muscle tear” ?
History would tell you about four months without our premier striker.
In all seriousness, it’s impossible to say from that description. One could assume it’s a Grade 1 tear which would imply a few affected muscle fibres. Even that, in an area so integral to the player’s activity, could result in between two and four weeks out.
The blurry line between a Grade 1 and Grade 2 tear, could see him out for up to six weeks.
On the other hand, a closer look, after playing on Sunday, travelling to Chile and training, might (said with great optimism) reveal only a severe cramp.
Wait and see time, I’m afraid, as they always are from this distance and with the amount of information we have (none !).
Thanks Trev.
The news from the USA has rather sidetracked me this morning. We must hold our breath for Alexis
Clive @68. – superb stuff.
Hilary Clinton must be a secret Spud. She’s just come second in a one house race.
Just saying.
Trump becomes president, growing your own pot and assisted suicide becomes legal in certain states of the USA on the same day.
Checks and balances, people. Checks and balances 🙂
Dumbfounded and scared.
Cynic,
Well he doesn’t seem very balanced and he’s certainly not going to be letting many Checks in. ?
😀
Well there goes the U.S. of A. God help us
To be brutally honest SAG, speaking from my spot here in Europe, I would prefer that it “goes” rather than it “comes”, for the next 4-8 years at least. 😉
So Bellerin’s out injured too now…. 🙁
Seems Bellerin may have found new ways to confound the medical team – however many of them there are.
He appears to have an EAR injury ?
What ?! you ask –
He appears to have an …….
Must have been his agent whispering in his ear about the bumper new contract…
Good news on Alexis? At least the 6 weeks out prognosis appears to have been rebutted.
http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/730617/Arsenal-News-Chile-manager-Juan-Antonio-Pizzi-Alexis-Sanchez-injury
Better he doesn’t play for Chile at all this Interlull but I suspect that’s a tall order if he can stand.
So it’s now a muscle ‘problem’ rather than a tear? I’ll see it when I believe it.
Belle’s ear injury more likely resulted from his agent bombarding him with offers from Barca and $iteh, Ned.
As for politics after Brexit and Trump should we call it a Western spring?
Oh, and yet again the candidate who recorded most votes in the US pres election … finished second. How does that work again, America?
it is understood Mourinho has found the general culture at United falling short of his expectations.
What a relief. I thought Mourinho was falling short of United’s expectations. Good to know it is the other way round…
Chris: the Founding Fathers feared the ‘tyranny of the majority’. Hence the electoral college system. The problem is that America has descended into the ‘tyranny of the minority’ because not enough vote. 50% turnout. Electorates get the government they deserve.

Undoubtedly the greatest comment ever written. Bar none.
Up there with his classic:
“the Dolce has fallen out of their Gabbanas” when referring to his nearest and dearest.
OM.
(Not Olympique Marseille.)
So Hector is gone in the fetlock now, as well as Alexis.
*sighs*
Heh, bath 🙂
Not good, Esso 🙁
Evening all, sorry about no new post. Last night recorded a podcast with Alex Fynn due out next week. Tonight been filling myself full of liver and bacon at a country pub.
Tomorrow night I’ll put some old nonsense together!
Apparently Alexis is now suffering from a hamstring injury, contrary to earlier reports it was a calf injury.
The Boss has rec a text from Chile Docs confirming.
They say it is very minor, and is being treated with ice and massage, and will be assessed before the Uruguay game next week.
Arsene of course is having kittens at the thought of losing Alexis for a long period, which means with Perez already buggered,we are back to the future with Ollie G leading the line.
Santi is only 50/50 to return against Utd, so creativity is going to be in short supply.
Hector also now has an ankle/foot injury,on top of the badly bruised ear he is sporting.
Squad depth about to be tested, for the next 2 big games against Utd and PSG.
You do yourself down, Guv’nor. It will be new nonsense. 🙂

Whittling is good for the soul, cba. Keep it up.
And if you need inspiration for it I recommend Season 2 Episode 10 of the best-ever Western series Maverick. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shady_Deal_at_Sunny_Acres
In this best-ever episode of the series Bret Maverick (James Garner) spends the entire show sitting in a rocking chair, just whittling. There’s a lot else going on by others of course as Bret weaves an elaborate sting, but I wouldn’t want to spoil it for you. 😉
First shown in the late ’50s before most here were born I dare say, but most of the storyline later turned up in the 1973 Redford/Newman classic The Sting. Great movie, but not as good as the Maverick version.
Cba…. yer pro British stance is starting to irritate.
Those Oirish is oil roite.
You should have your own show……..
i”d watch it…
But you are wrong about Trump. He’s as scary as it gets.
Thank fuck I live in NZ.
Everythings upside down of course but we are at least flying under the Trump radar….
Also a bit Muslim and Mexican lite so he shouldn’t notice us for a bit….
I’m all right Jack?
Damn Straight.
I’ve got three kids, two of em American. I hope they dont hurt me…
Any news on Hector?
Or is he definately banjaxed as well?
Wake me up when the wars over and the Arsenal are playing again please…..
… assuming whittles is what you meant, cba, and not witless?
I think we can safely assume Trump has never heard of New Zealand, impfail, and we’d be way down his list of nations to invade even if he has.
Personally I think he’s relatively harmless and only America is likely to be harmed by him long-term. More comedy value than fear factor.
Chris, indeed, bigotry, xenophobia, misogyny and sexual assault are all of the highest comedic order. When Trump rips up the Paris Agreement his Wall will keep the CO2 within our borders – no foreign nations will be harmed.
RIP Leonard Cohen.
Poet, lover, troubadour.
A couple of years ago he gave the best concert that I ever saw.
Hero.

R.I.P. Leonard Cohen … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3HTvlDFbm4
This site has the most complete record of musicians who have dropped off the coil this year and other years … http://weheartmusic.typepad.com/blog/musicians-who-died-in-2016.html
Sir George Martin is up there with Bowie, Prince and Cohen, and Glenn Frey of the Eagles not far behind. You may find some of your favs among them.
Hell of a list there, Chris. If I believed in Nirvana, I would say there was quite a gig going on.
speak truth to power?

Republic of Ireland footballer Anthony Stokes has pleaded guilty to assaulting an Elvis Presley impersonator outside a nightclub in Dublin.
Sounds like Arseblogger has had a really tough time of it lately!
Apparently he hit him three times.
One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready…
I’ll get my coat 🙁
Stokes had to admit his guilt as he could see the magistrates had Suspicious Minds. If he went to trial he could see himself being sent Way Down. He was scared of sharing a cell in case his cell mate asked him to Treat Me Nice, so he decided to Surrender.
It seems right now he is all shook up.
They ought to be making him do the jailhouse rock.
