WIN A PAIR OF VIP TICKETS TO SEE ARSENAL AT EMIRATES CUP 2017
Jul 6th, 2017 by 'holic
The Arsenal are hosting their pre-season tournament, the Emirates Cup, on Saturday July 29th and Sunday July 30th.
We’ve teamed up with the Gunners to offer one lucky reader a pair of VIP tickets to the first day of the tournament, in Club Level at Emirates Stadium.
Taking part in this year’s competition alongside the Arsenal are Portuguese champions Benfica, 2016 Europa League winners Sevilla, and Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.
It will be the first time we have hosted the latter club, although I did make the trip to Leipzig when we played Lokomotive in 1978. They boast a young and exciting side who briefly topped the Bundesliga last season. They, like us, will face Sevilla and Benfica.
As with the previous Emirates Cup tournaments, fans will enjoy two matches each on both Saturday and Sunday, with one ticket giving access to both matches on a particular day.
For the opportunity to enjoy a day out in style at Emirates Stadium this pre-season, just answer the following question:
Which Gunners star made his Arsenal debut in the 2014 Emirates Cup?
- A) Alexis Sanchez
B) Mesut Ozil
C) Petr Cech
Tickets are still available for Day One and Day Two of Emirates Cup 2017, from £25 adults and £12 concessions. Visit Arsenal.com to buy.
Send your entry to competition@goonerholic.com to arrive by midnight, UK time, on Wednesday 12th July. Please include a contact email address and phone number so the Arsenal can contact you directly if you are the one drawn out of the hat.
Thank you to the Arsenal for providing this opportunity for one lucky ‘holic to catch the first sight of Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette in Arsenal shirts. By the way, wasn’t yesterday truly a good news day for the Gunners? Welcome Alexandre, and possibly as important welcome home Mad Jens. The signs of the promised ‘catalyst for change’ are becoming very evident.
Hopefully there will be more good things to chat about at the weekend.

Come on baby do the Locomotiv Locomotion.
But can Jens make everybody else mad too??
Assuming it would be a good thing for Jens to make everybody else mad, of course, but I wouldn’t want to assume too much at this early stage …
Been caught out too often on that score in the past, as Stuart Robson once said, for my liking.
While on the subject, may as well count my eggs before they are hatched …

In other words, don’t put your phone numbers on the drinks.
cba will be ringing you up and threatening to moo at you.
Thanks Cynic.
Those who entered via the drinks will go in the draw but I have ‘hidden’ your posts with your personal details.
Ban ’em for not reading the blog proply 😉
Is it me or is everything right up in the air?
We could lose Sanchez, Ozil, Bellerin, Giroud, Ox and Wilshere.
Each one of them could leave before the start of the season. We need to get things sorted if we hope to go forward as a solid unit. Gazidis must bear responsibility for this although he cedes most of his power to Wenger. That’s without unloading the less desirable packages we have to shift.
I do hope that by the time we get to the Emirates Cup we have our squad sorted and hopefully retain the people we want to keep.
Looking forward to see the new signings here in sydney next Thursday and Friday
Hope they take games seriously
Does your comp include air tickets, ‘holic? 😀 I only travel business these days, by Emirates naturally.
Credit to AW for actually signing someone early in the window. Maybe he has learned something. We shall see. Beginning with settling Alexis and Mesut one way or the other SOON.
As for better #10s than the latter, I hope someone has a good look at Emil Forsberg assuming he turns out for Leipzig in the Ems Cup. What I’ve seen of him suggests he performs at twice the work-rate of Ozil Gummidge and would be an ideal supplier for whoever plays in the front 3. Very much an Arsenal ‘type’ in the Romford Pele mould.
I also believe Rambo’s best position is #10. 😉
A lot of talk about players we will/should be losing, but the only one I’ve seen so far is Chris Willock. Hardly any serious rumours even except for OG.
threaten to , cynic ?
threaten to ?
not this little black duck !
i’d a gone straight to full moooooooooooooooooooooo
.
and
most o them were fuckin wrong too ?
the calibre of gooner ?
jeez us
someone should walk among em
handin out fat lips n thick ears
as a fuckin kindness
having said that
good luck everyone
?
Can’t blame Chris Willock for leaving. A 19-year-old of promise (played for England up the age groups to Under-19) who has Sanchez playing in his position in the first team with Iwobi as back-up and plenty of others able to play wide left (Welbeck, Lacazette). Imaginative choice to go abroad, though.
My #10 was in response to Vinay in the last drinks saying he couldn’t think of a better No 10 playing anywhere in the world currently. For the record here is a comparison with Forsberg last season:
Ozil: 8 goals and 9 assists in 2848 minutes in the Prem.
Forsberg: 8 goals and 19 assists in 2349 minutes in Bundesliga.
Keep an eye out for both in the Ems Cup.
If you’re talking best player in the world, it helps if they don’t hide for half the season as well.
Did we release Willock or sell?
Couple of years from now we could
be looking for someone on the left
and a young player who’s done
well overseas might be attractive.
Sanchez will leave sooner or later
and Iwobi’s future may be central.
Just wondering if we sold with a
buy back clause.
Either way best of luck to him,
it’s a good chance.
BFG is to lead our Academy in a year’s time. He will be part of the first team next year.
I thoroughly approve he is a great role model and intelligent guy. Good forward planning and I wish him well
Osaka Matt
Neither
He wouldn’t sign a new contract and moved on to Benfica at the end of his current contract
Thanks TTG.
In that case,as NBN said, I can’t
blame him for taking an option
that may be better for his chances
of first team football.
And good news on @17, BFG is a
natural as a teacher and I think
it speaks well for us as a club that
a man with his values wants to
stay at The Arsenal.
TTG,
Well said and couldn’t agree more – I was lucky enough to spend a few hours in the company of the whole mertersacker clan at the semi final v City, Not only has Per a great affinity for the club so has his extended family and each and everyone one of them was lovely, So grounded, It was easy to see how and why Per is like he is, Saying that Timo still owes me a pint 🙂 !
Can two years make up an era? It appears so having a look at Premier League champions’ prior season finish in the table: 1992/93 through 2014-15 being an era of stability at the top of the table from season to season, and 2015-16 and 2016-17 the exact opposite.
Championship winning season / Club’s finish the season prior to winning the league:
2016/17 Chelsea 10th
2015/16 Leicester City 14th
2014/15 Chelsea 3rd
2013/14 Manchester City 2nd
2012/13 Manchester United 2nd
2011/12 Manchester City 3rd
2010/11 Manchester United 2nd
2009/10 Chelsea 3rd
2008/09 Manchester United 1st
2007/08 Manchester United 1st
2006/07 Manchester United 2nd
2005/06 Chelsea 1st
2004/05 Chelsea 2nd
2003/04 Arsenal 2nd
2002/03 Manchester United 3rd
2001/02 Arsenal 2nd
2000/01 Manchester United 1st
1999/00 Manchester United 1st
1998/99 Manchester United 2nd
1997/98 Arsenal 3rd
1996/97 Manchester United 1st
1995/96 Manchester United 2nd
1994/95 Blackburn Rovers 2nd
1993/94 Manchester United 1st
1992/93 Manchester United 2nd
Apologies for any errors in this data.
Excellent news about Per going to head up the Academy at the end of next season. AW grooming his successor? Should be ready for the job when AW steps down after 25 seasons.
OsakaMatt, Ttg: It strikes me that a youngster brought up at Arsenal will be a far better fit for football in Europe, and thus have a much better chance of making a successful career, than the lower divisions in England, where many of those moving on for regular football seem to end up, and mostly sink without trace.
i met eddie mc goldrick’s granda’s cousin’s godson

You could only have met Mcgoldrick or his relatives in Aldi. That was the level he was at. Now Liam Brady and his clan or David O’Leary would have been found in Harrods.
I was not a fan of Eddie. His penalty against Sampdoria was the worst I’ve ever seen from an Arsenal player. I thought he was shit but he wasn’t able to match my expectations.

You bring a delightful surrealism to this blog that no other one remotely matches. I know you want the guvna to write a book ( so do I) but it should include a chapter from you.
I’m flying into Dublin on Wednesday – a controversial day north of the border!
But have you met Laura McGoldrick, cba? Kiwi spouse of Kiwi opening bat Martin Guptill who not surpisingly preferred to keep her maiden name … http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11614652
Great news about Per. Top role model.
Bunuel is rolling in his grave

well not yet

come on now – ye can’t believe i’m unaware
we all know eddie had his limitations
being any good being one of them
indeed in my usual flowery manner
i called him just that
so , how did we end up here ?
i dunno ?

as to the mighty ‘holic’s book
again – no pressure big man
but the book i’d buy is about him
history , beer , crombies , bowie , life etc etc etc
all wrapped up in The Arsenal
his recall and ability to slap it on a page
are fuckin brilliant
bit jealous cos my memory is not unlike

a fine figure of a woman indeed
and mc goldrick is a good solid name
ye’d trust someone called mc goldrick
not necessarily with a football
but with other stuff
important stuff with ladders and pliers and such
I think I may also have a wee man in a moth-eaten cardigan ‘working’ in the retrieval department of my memory vaults, cba. I put his getting lost down to the archives having grown so vast with the amount of data accumulated in my lifetime that the finding of any particular item is now virtually (and realistically) near impossible. Especially as his mate in trousers up to his nipples responsible for the filing department has a particularly random access memory when it comes to terms like ‘alphabetical’ and ‘chronological’.
The nearest analogy I can offer to my declining memory function can be found (if you look really hard) in the works of Jasper Fforde, in particular The Well Of Lost Plots.

ahd a big chuckle here cos
a high stool companion of mine
wears nipple trousers like that
he’s absolute comedy gold
and like most of the people i bevvy with
half the time with him is spent drinking
the rest roaring with laughter
he’s gotta an opinion on everything and nothing
all delivered painfully slow
and with a buster keaton face
he also walks that slow that he’s perpetually
either walking to or coming back from the toilet
and the trousers just complete the whole experience
and interestingly like quite a few round here
a gooner after spending a lifetime in london
anyhoo

UP THE ARSENAL
Nipple trousers ……….
What keeps them up .. ?
Or is that what a necktie is for …? ?
Do you lot wear any items of clothing around the bits what they was originally intended for. …
That’s me done …
?
That’s a wrap …. ?
So this bloke I know has gone on a super strict vegan diet.
He’s taken to wearing all black clothes and spends the entire day talking about nothing but vegetables.
I’m afraid he might be being radishalised ……. ?
I’d love to go on a vegan diet but you can’t have bacon so fuck that.
Probably wears black clothes just to show off how much less he stinks.
On the other hand, the radishes just might tilt the stink-o-meter.
I’m quite sick about the loss of Chris Willock, (my spell check wants pillock!), especially after the loss of Gnabry. Zelalem will probably go the same way if Wenger loses interest in him. Football has become very short-termist, with an increasing number of thirty-somethings being bought by the top clubs.
On the transfer front, it’s being reported by a number of sources including Sky, that we have agreed terms, said to be £90k per week, with Lemar, and will be negotiating to get a reduction of the supposed £80M fee. If this comes off, I’d be prepared to take a chance on Mahrez, but not at anywhere near £50 mill.
So let’s get it straight . We are not prepared to allow Sanchez and The Ox to leave during their contracts to go to another team but we are pressurising LeMar and possibly Mahrez to leave their clubs during their contracts.
Football is a partisan business. We won’t be able to let Sanchez to run his contract down but we might be able to flog him to a non- English club. Frankly if we get Lemar he can push off to Pep for all I care but I’d be very interested in getting Aguero in return. He did some great things for us but he also had some shockers and you could also see the strained relations with members of the team at times. We are still being linked with M’bappe. That surely has no chance of happening?
Trev back on form @45.
yeah garibaldi
Arsène has always played the short-termist game

Easy does it people. Oh that we could see each others eyes when we were typing on a keyboard. Oh that we could explain ourselves face to face all the time, but as some fella once said, The times, they are a changing’.
We could always go back to talking football. Just a thought.
All is fair Ned, when it is close season.
Don’t suppose any cricket fans are out there. Big couple of months coming up over here with a very different calendar surrounding the T20s, one day games, tests, and four day games starting to bite.
And those from non cricket playing nations look on completely missing that post! ?
Sorry all!
Did you see the T20 tonight, H? I’ve never seen a bowler get sconed like that before.
Pablo Fornals, pls!!

What’s the news on him?

Did not seem to play much towards the end of the season
Is he off arsene’s radar

Regarding ‘trousers up to his nipples’ it has long been my observation that the older a man gets the more his ties seem to disappear into his trousers. Only on closer examination did I realise the effect was less due to any foreshortening of said neck adornment than to the rising tide of men’s belted lower coverings during the aging process. Why this should be is as big a mystery to me as why anyone would wear a tie anyway once beyond the dictates of employment fuhrers. And as I am well past the timeframe the phenomenon usually begins I am naturally watching myself closely for the first signs…
Ties are the vestigial remains of scarves worn as part of the uniform of Croatian mercenaries of King Louis XIII to ‘tie’ their jackets so they don’t fall off. History says nothing of their relevance to trousers however.

Hello fellows, it’s been a while.
Holic, really sorry to hear about your travails. Thank goodness you’ve been able to somewhat rectify the situation. Seriously don’t know what most of us on here would do without you.
So Ozil looks to be staying put. I can live with that.
Sanchez on the other hand, seems on the way out. Something about doors and backsides. He can do one by all means (personal view).
The thing is he knows he’s got Arsenal by the short and curlies, mostly due to our ineptitude, and has deftly backed the club into a corner.
What does Wenger do? Sell him and face the wrath of a lot of fans or run the risk of letting him go for zilch in 12 months? Or pay him 400 grand a month?
Kolasinac and Lacazette represent a good start to the window. Getting two attackers would help soften the blow of losing Alexis if he decides to leave. Fingers crossed, this could be very interesting summer yet.
UTA
As SG @ 73 sugggests AS does seem to have AW & AFC over a big ol’ of bucks, what with the year left on his contract corner he’s been allowed to paint us into etc.
BUTT (and it’s a big one) my deep lying (no, not that sort of lying, silly) contacts in world football (aka the sports pages, of quality newspapers mind you, and some schmuck i chat to at the bus stop) tell me (and i can’t name said sources, for obvious reasons) that the Russian money launderers and their short-arsed, mad-eyed manager with the mysterious disappearing/reappearing-do, are getting a little desperate, testy even – re signing a striker.
So, the club indulges in a little media manipulation (I’ll certainly be contacting my contacts Asap), designed to tickle-up the outsized egos of the obscenely overloaded ones at the Emptihad & the bullet-proofed Bridge: we get ourselves a big ol’ bidding war going, and Hey Pesto (jus’ keeping it real, and contemporary, and cooking/insult oriented) – we get 100million nickaaaah for the back pocket; the prima ballerina and hims silly wage demands get bundled out the back-door; and we get back in the business of making wacky bids for the likes of Mbappe et al.
It’s a plan. But will A. Dubbya take notice of a dope like me ??? yes, i fink he will.
UTA!
Oh for the days of the maximum wage, eh? £20 a week during the season and £17 during the summer. Plus the retain-and-transfer system, which let a club to retain a player against his will at the end of his contract and pay him less money while doing so.
Fabulous,Epic 3rd Rugby Test between British Lions and the All Blacks ends in a draw 15 – 15.
Ferocious thunderous tackles, bodies scattered everywhere, brilliant attacking football, rugby at it’s absolute best.
Steve T would have loved it.
Fittingly the 3 test series ended with a win each and the draw.
Amazingly there were more Lions fans at Eden Park yesterday, than there were Kiwis.
Fantastic atmosphere, and the Lions support never wavered from the first minute to the last.
Our so called supporters could learn a lesson from them.
HOLIC !!
There’s some geezer in here talking about, er, Rugby I think he called it…
What’s more, he said Steve T would have loved it ! Now we all know Steve T doesn’t love anything – except, maybe, Fish and Chips.
Whatever this Rugby thing is, it sounds properly weird and like it’s played in some kind of creationist zoo, at a place called Eden Park where there are lions and kiwis and hookers providing who knows what kind of entertainment.
Come on now, you bunch of blind sided flankers – can we just get back to discussing politics and religion and stuff ….
We are, after all, honoured by the presence – though never the presents – of the great Reverend Al.
Al! E Looya ! ? ?
Chris @71. – ?
Sydney red –
“Theo!
What’s the news on him?
Is he injured?”
No Sydney, he is a lazy bastard.
What’s worse, tit warming trousers or the yoofs showing off their grubby pants as they risk tripping over their own waistband?
I vote trippy pants, but at least if they fall over they might go under a bus, so there’s a plus side to them.
?
Theo, sorry Chris, is on nobody’s radar cause he isn’t worth any strife. I do support him still cause he remains one of us.
Alexis to City ain’t so bad, if they trade us De Bruyne, non?
And yes, i’n tiresome but, ffs, pls check out Pablo Fornals
Cynic, I did see it thank you, and wish I hadn’t. I suffered something similar when a little kid. Batsman hit a drive at an indoor net which deflected off a metal pole supporting the net into my left eye at some velocity.
I thought last night was worse because he appeared to be struck near, if not on, the temple. They would have worried about a blood clot at very least. Horrible but credit Sky for not showing repeats.
Less credit to the twat on the PA system who played Sweet Caroline as he was being treated.
