A Boy’s First Match – TTG
Aug 2nd, 2017 by 'holic
Again I owe at very least a debt of gratitude to our very own TTG for helping out with an excellent piece as I chill big time in the West Country. I think you will enjoy it at least as much as a very mellow me. Let’s go back to Saturday, and the visit of Benfica.
One thing every fan remembers is his or her first match and certainly Gooners will remember their first Arsenal match. Today young Oliver saw his first game at the Emirates and watching his delight at being in the stadium, seeing his heroes up close and cheering five goals in a very entertaining friendly was probably as much a delight for me as it was for him.
I had originally intended to be on holiday in Norfolk today but a few weeks ago Ollie had asked me if I would go with him to the Emirates Cup as part of his eighth birthday celebrations . Had I broached this suggestion normally to Mrs TTG I would have been pessimistic of success but she is a devoted grandmother and thought it was a lovely idea for him to watch his first Arsenal match with Grandad. He also brought along my daughter and her husband and his elder brother whose affiliation lies on the dark side of the Seven Sisters Road but who were charm and fairness personified today as they watched events unfold.
Before the game we made the obligatory visit to the Armoury (as much for Grandad as for Oliver) and purchased a very fetching Arsenal hoodie for the young birthday boy. Against my better judgment I invested in the very fetching new third kit and hope it is not as tightly cut as most of its predecessors. I also bought a Dennis the Legend mug and will be drinking from it on match days hoping that the great man’s powers will propel the team forward next season. Whenever I visit the Armoury I try to work out what the turnover on a match day must be. The place was rammed with people their arms full of replica kits and other memorabilia. This is not the normal audience for a home game and the pickings for Arsenal must be enormous.
Before we took our seats in Club Level (a rare treat) we went in search of the commemorative tile I purchased beside the Tony Adams statue paying tribute to my late father who saw his first game in 1924. How proud he would have been to see his great grandsons beside this very personal monument. I know I was.
I’m not massively acquainted with Club Level and to be honest prefer the higher vantage point I have in Block 100 but our seats were perfect for youngsters watching their heroes including the ubiquitous Gunnersaurus who looks to me as if he needs a few sessions with Darren Burgess. Apparently he feels much the same about me.
Some people poor scorn on the Emirates Cup but this was a chance for a huge number of young children to watch Arsenal live in a much more benign atmosphere than I am used to on a Saturday afternoon (or whenever we play). The place was about 85% full and I reckon about a third of the spectators, at least, were under the age of twelve. We didn’t watch the Red Bull v Sevilla match in order not to place too much of a strain on the youngster’s concentration and I’m not sure that many people did. Amazingly there was a contingent of vociferous Portugese fans in one section above us, supporting their team passionately. I’m never quite sure of the sanity of people who travel abroad to watch pre-season friendlies but I suppose there is a bit to do in London or they may have been natives of this fair city who had moved from Portugal some time ago.
Benfica are on a bit of a domestic roll having won four titles in a row but they lose most of their stars each season and have seen Premier League giants poach three of their best players already this close season. The loss of Ederson to Citeh has revived the opportunity for Julio Cesar to regain his place in goal and they were a neat, stylish team, much better in attack than defence. That made two of them because our three at the back formation made for a lively and fairly scary first half with all three of our defenders looking fallible, suspect in their positioning and very risky in some of their passing. Our keenness to play out from the back (loosely) cost us two first-half goals (both deflected) and while the gap on the left side between Maitland- Niles and Kolasinac was a problem for the whole first-half there were compensations in the displays of both wing-backs, Nelson, who is surely a star in the making, and Kolasinac who is the ultimate brick outhouse with pace and drive and who helped set up both of the two goals that Theo notched in the first half. Nelson is not a wing-back but further forward his pace and trickery will cause many sides better than Benfica a problem .
The second half was inevitably disjointed with a flood of substitutes joining from both sides but our performance was much more coherent as the industry of Elneny and class of Xhaka began to tell. Theo’s cross was deflected in by Lisandro for our third, Giroud finished off an excellent move with a nice finish from a clever Nelson cross for number four, and the fifth was a fine finish from Iwobi after a deft lay-off from Giroud.
Lacazette joined the match late on with Ozil and the Ox but was unable to make too much impact. Interestingly he played with Giroud upfront rather than instead of him. There were too many people on the pitch to make too much sense of the game. Theo has definitely bulked up and looked effective in a freer role although he missed a sitter. Based on this match I would be loath to let Elneny and Chambers go and I think we might see Nelson fairly regularly in the Premier League.
It was a fine if wet baptism for Oliver, but baptisms are meant to be wet aren’t they? It was a very entertaining and happy day for an excited little boy who I hope will be visiting Arsenal for a very long time to come. Some family traditions are precious but if they involve the Arsenal they are doubly so.
You’re a star, Oliver, as is TTG!

UP THE ARSENAL !
Lovely report TTG.
I certainly remember my first Arsenal game. We lost 1-0 at Craven Cottage on January 1st 1966, and we were lucky enough to visit the player’s lounge after the game.
I was eight years old, and told George Eastham that he was “my second favourite player”. He asked who my favourite was – Joe Baker, of course.
Well worth the wait, TTG. Top man and top report! 🙂
cba. Will there be an effin report on your market day? 😉
Disillusioned with the club this week over the whole Kroenke / Hunting thing ; I know it’s not a football issue per se but it has upset me.
That aside this post has made me all enthusiastic again. Will 100% be taking my 10 year old daughter to her first game this season and hope she enjoys it as much as this young man did – or indeed I did – a 3-1 home win over Birmingham @ Xmas 1978…
A very interesting report, TTG. The first of many more to follow, I hope.
Very happy for your grandson who will remember the day for a long time to come.
Lovely report, TTG. Clearly a very special day for you and your grandson. I agree the Emirates Cup is an ideal way of introducing children to live football.
Schooner, in the last drinks, thanks for responding to my previous comments. I’d like to put you right on a couple of things. I will go into this season with the hope that we can win the league, as I have for the last 20 odd years. To achieve that, we will have to be quite fortunate with injuries, etc, and our rivals much less so.. To expect to win the league would be foolhardy arrogance, not just for an Arsenal supporter, but for any supporter. Even if I were a Bayern Munich fan, I wouldn’t proclaim that I expect them to win the German league.
My second is that I have not been mugged over by AW or the board. I really like AW because I believe he has great integrity, great loyalty to the club, is consistent with his footballing instincts and beliefs and doesn’t bend the way the media wants him to. I like the way he stands up publicly for the club and the players, even when they have let him down, as Ferguson said last season. I don’t see any other manager anywhere with that degree of strength and integrity. I just wish he was ten years younger.
As for the running of the club itself, I’m fairly ambivalent. I can’t stand Kroenke, especially after the Hunting channel revelations this week. However, I would also hate the club to be owned by our own version of Abramovitch or Qataris, etc. All of that is shit these days. I’m sure the board do their best in the transfer market. We tend to spend the money relative to our wealth, i.e. less than United, City and Chelsea but more than the others, certainly as demonstrated in previous years. What I would hate to see is Arsenal spending more than we can afford, a la Leeds United. Anyhow, I’ll stop there, because I’m boring myself now.
Awesome stuff TTG. Exactly why the Emirates Cup is in existence. A great read.
Thanks TTG. I enjoyed the post and it reminded me of taking my
son to his first game. He’s 19 now so I’ll tell him to get on with
knocking out some grandkids. Can’t be s better reason for having kids than wanting to take them to Arsenal games can there?
Top read, Ttg. Glad it was such an enjoyable day for Oliver, too. I hope he will be doing the same for his grandson half a century or so hence (when AW will be celebrating his 75th year as Arsenal manager….)
Although not a footie fan I am proud that Mr TTG took our grandson to watch his first Arsenal match…that’s what grandads are meant to do….create memories for the next generation and Mr TTG certainly did this…well worth missing a day of your holiday for.
?
Lovely to see you here Mrs TTG. Have a wonderful holiday. 🙂
Sounds like a wonderful adventure, TTG, taking the grandson to see the Arsenal, how I envy you. My own grandson turned 1yo this year so I shall be well into my 80s by the time he’s old enough to take. Then there’s the problem of the Arse being the other side of the world…
But the enjoyment and obvious pride you had in your day out with Oliver gave me a warm feeling and I thank you for that.
Just make sure he treasures that third kit you bought for him. I’ve a feeling it will become a collectors item in years to come because I doubt many will want to buy it now!
Scgooner from previous drinks
I was awaiting your response to my post with interest, and you haven’t disappointed me.
First let me say that you are as entitled as anyone else to voice your opinions in Holic’s Bar,so don’t ever feel you are unwelcome,as that was not the purpose of my post.
My quibble was that it was a tad premature to be getting stressed with still a month of the transfer window to go.
If we are still in the same situation at the end of August,i will be very disappointed myself.
But i am ever hopeful that there are plenty of comings and goings to be dealt with at the Club before month’s end.
I always make it a policy before every season, to wait till the transfer window has closed before assessing whether we have a good enough squad to challenge for the Title.
Sadly over the past several years my thoughts were that we were really only capable of challenging for a top 4 spot in the league, and that we would have a good run in the local cups.
So in that respect i haven’t been overly disappointed.
Unfortunately there are now 6 clubs vying for the 4 CL spots this season.
3 of them,Utd/City/Chelsea, are prepared to spend shed loads of dough to achieve success, and the other 3,Arse/Pool/Spuds are a bit more circumspect in their spending and will in all probability be vying for one CL spot.
Devon Stu@10 has put the points eloquently about the Club being run in a fiscally responsible way, but i would also point out that our neighbors down the road are even more parlous than we are in the transfer market, have never spent extravagant sums on players, haven’t won a trophy for many many years, yet the Board and management don’t cop half the flack that we do.
Let’s revisit this discussion at the end of August, when hopefully we will be 3 from 3,top of the table and the joint will be jumping.
After TTG’s wonderful account the news then breaks of the transfer of Neymar to PSG. Total cost? £198 million, give or take a pound or two. It is total and utter lunacy and I detest it. It is obscene beyond words and the main reason why I feel less and less of a connection with a game I once loved.
Sits back waiting for someone to share the details of how financial fair play will save the game?
Lovely stuff, TTG.
Them’s the best of days – for both of you.
£198m is just the transfer fee, Steve, it will be more than double that including salary and fees. Somewhere estimated the final cost at a third of PSG’s stock market value.
George Eastham could never have dreamt where his 1963 court case would lead … £520k a week after tax!
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/aug/02/neymar-psg-barcelona-tells-team-mates-leave
…I could live on that as a monthly salary. 😀
Lovely stuff, Mr and Mrs TTG, thanks for sharing with us.
Absurd transfer fees, tv channels
for the unspeakable, yet another
new kit – roll on Sunday for the
game.
In other transfer news:
On this day in 1999 we signed TH14.

Wonderful stuff TTG. Well done Oliver.
Good to see the tradition transcending the generations. That is what it is all about.
Enjoy your hols.
Hope to see you sometime in Block 100.
…and well done Mrs TTG.
Pol Roger on the bar for you both, and an Orangina for Oliver.
Looks like Ospina is staying and Martinez off on loan to Getafe
for the season.
Could work well for Emi to get a season of La Liga football
and give us a better idea of his level.
I hope Cech stays healthy and maintains a good level.
We should leave him at home for the Ropey League trips
and take Macey as sub.
the Neymar thing is ridiculous but I must admit Barca’s
fury and dudgeon is amusing.

Now, back to the real world of money-laundering – £198 for Neymar?! Absolutely love it! He’s worth every single penny of that dosh, and more! Let the flood gates now open even wider! Welcome to FFP Arsene! ?

TTG sir that was awesome. The tradition continues and may ti continue far and beyond. Brilliant. Hope the boy was chuffed seeing The Arsenal.
222 million and counting and they are saying Neymar and went and personally handed over the cheque of his release clause. Sick in the pits as i see the beautiful game getting destroyed by these money moghuls.
Arsene said this a long time ago that financial doping is killing the game but he also FFP will hopefully cut it down. Sorry Arsene there is nothing called fair play in the sport left.
Alexis seen kissing the badge in today’s open session. We have seen all that havent we!!! just see him staying this season and leaving the next after having signed an agreement with any club of his choice in Jan. Believe that is what he would have asked for to stay.
on to sunday and as ever optimism and realism continues to knock each other. Here is to optimism not just for the shield but for the season. Can we please get the CM now.

Women’s Euros should have been on US television. Execs dropping the ball. And if anybody says it was on some obscure channel, which it may have been but I don’t have the time to research it, my point is that it was not where it needed to be for the “average fan” (which I happen to be) to find out. Got it, execs?
Turns out the tournament was on ESPN, which I hardly ever watch. Now to check out Denmark v. Austria.
Update: It turns out the Denmark v. Austria game is NOT on ESPN where I live.
(At this point I would intensify the anti-TV execs rant if I had the time, energy and an online forum that would allow me to do it.)
Oh. 😉
How about that Emiliano to Getafe news? Pretty intense, huh?
Well. Maybe not as intense as I first thought. Good luck, Emi, anyhow.

Nothing that happens in the world of football surprises any of us anymore . Nor the fact that a tiny state in the Gulf exercise massive control over the world of football despite an appalling human rights record and no domestic league of any quality. So let’s buy someone else’s.
Wenger’s words on the Neymar transfer make sense but will be viewed by some supporters as defeatist. Frankly unless you are financed by a multi-billionaire who is more determined to succeed than anyone else or you are allowed to ride roughshod over financial commonsense by you government it’s hard to see anyone succeeding beyond the capture of an occasional cup. And I don’t want Arsenal to just buy success. I want to see us win the one with the Big Ears but at the moment that’s a fantasy

UP THE ARSENAL
hi from Sydney
interesting show yesterday on arsenal tv.
showed highlights of arsenal in sydney a few weeks ago.
including the off field things the club did.
overall showed the class of the gunners and the huge support they have .
if you get a change watch it
If Martinez is off to Getafe on loan, does Macey become the back-up 1st team benchwarmer or is a veteran keeper brought in? (Unless Jens is looking for a comeback.)
Thanks for re-posting that Geoffrey Gurrumul song cba. I had missed it when Chris first posted it – thanks therefore to Chris also. A lovely voice. Sad that he has died far too young.
A fairly underwhelming response to my suggestion of a bit of Prince for a Lacazette song.
Oh well, I’ll just sing it to myself in the shower….
WE’VE GOT ALEX LACAZETTE!! CLAP CLAP

WE’VE GOT ALEX LACAZETTE!! CLAP CLAP
HE CAME FROM LYON TO JOIN THE ARSENAL!!
Insanely quick skipping dance across the bathroom floor,
drops to the splits, up and lifts towel off the rail………….
Sounds good to me. Are you going to post a video cam?

I do think Nelson may make the bench too and Giroud certainly will
