Nelson Has One Eye On A First Team Opportunity
Aug 15th, 2017 by 'holic
It’s Tuesday evening and I am watching my second Champions League match of the day. It’s a very strange feeling to say the least. Casually, I wonder if Ivan and Arsene are watching and have the same feeling? After nineteen consecutive campaigns we are the little boy with his face pressed up against the sweet shop window.
It doesn’t help that Serge Gnabry is playing for Hoffenheim and looking a threat in the opening minutes. Not that he would have been playing much first-team football for us yet had he stayed, and knowing that he made the perfectly reasonable decision to go where he would. Oh, as I typed that he won a penalty, but Mignolet has saved an awful spot-kick.
Earlier I saw a very lifeless FC Copenhagen lose by the only goal to Qarabag (yes, that’s only the second time I’ve heard of them too!). Perhaps we should consider switching to the Danish Superliga? I jest, obviously.
Meanwhile we have to settle for the Europa League. I’m not contemplating Thursday night football with any great fervour, but there is a chance we could use the competition to keep our squad players and most promising youngsters up to speed in case they are needed later in the season.
Talking of the youngsters I got to watch most of the U23s fixture away to Derby last night while recording A Bergkamp Wonderland podcast (see below). Kieran Gibbs, Francis Coquelin, and Jack Wilshere started as the over-age players. Was this a shop window opportunity for Gibbs and Wilshere, rumoured to have been given the option to move on?
Jack was noticeably moving the ball very quickly, often one or two touch, and very accurately. It did appear though that he was running with a slight limp as the second-half progressed and he (like Gibbs who was substituted at half-time) did not complete the ninety minutes.
The young man who did catch the eye was Reiss Nelson, so impressive in pre-season. He scored the goals that saw us recover from 0-2 down to level, and if you get a chance do watch his finish for the equaliser, do it. Eddie Nketiah completed the comeback to seal the 3-2 win. The highlights can be found on Arsenal Player here.
All of which leads to the aforementioned ABW podcast. Danny, Gimli, and I were joined by Chas Newkey-Burden. I have been looking forward to talking with him for some time and he is everything I expected. Interesting, intelligent, and very amiable. We chatted about the obvious things really. The Leicester match, the Alexis situation, will the Ox be off to the bus stop in Fulham? Have a listen if you have a couple of hours to spare (yes, I know!).

Ooh, just realised Havard Nordveit is playing for Hoffenheim too. We must be their feeder club?
Great post Holic.
I saw some of last night too. Nelson looked terrific but the team defended atrociously although the starting back three were all not originally defenders. I fear we are not focusing enough on pure defending!
And it’s Tuesday evening?
Tuesday is clearly the new Wednesday. 🙂
Sigurdsson to Everton for 45 million. Oh no!
They only have 30 million left from the Lukaku sale. Can you buy anybody for that these days?
Nice one H. Time travel to boot! There’s no-one on that pitch that I would buy, were I Arsene or Ivan. Furthermore, Gnabry demonstrated that his unwanted departure is no loss. I look forward to seeing more of Nelson.
Must have been a very long podcast if it already feels like Wednesday evening, Holic. ?
Like bath, I was impressed by, and look forward to seeing more of, the admirable Nelson.
TTG (and others) from previous bar,
If you’ve had enough of the screeching Robbie Savage and want some proper inside knowledge, TalkSpite has just recruited Joey Barton ….
No, you couldn’t make it up.
The Europa League will be a big comedown this season but I hope the club takes it very seriously and doesn’t repeat past mistakes in sending below strength teams on long journeys against supposedly less stiff opposition.
Yes, it will be a chance to rotate to a degree, but it is also a route back into the Champions League if we falter in the Premier League again.
Wenger press conference with an update on Alexis at 9am says arsenal.com
Sounds like there might be news?
Thanks ‘holic and others for the heads-up on the U23 match and highlights. Reiss Nelson’s second goal was very special, and Nketiah’s winner quite the moment showing that we have real goalscoring potential in the team. But coming back from being down by two goals that were scored after we had dominated possession, the scenario sounds all too familiar …
‘holic, Nordtveit wasn’t on my radar either, and I wasn’t watching the game but the match report says he scored a second half own goal that was a minor help in allowing Liverpool to win 2-1. Did he know he wasn’t supposed to do that? 😉
Did Gnabry look any better in the second half?
Trev, of course it’s Tuesday. What are you talking about? ?
Gnabry looked as disappointing in this match as in most occasions he turned out for the Arse … a bit of an Ox in the build up, but a Gnu with the final ball.
The pen miss was just one of a number of chances Hoff had to put a dent in Poo’s chances of even making the CL group stage. But frankly we want them in the thing, and staying in till the death – providing they lose in the end of course. We surely don’t want one of the Top 4 contenders with nothing to do midweek.
…one of the PREM top 4 contenders that should be.
Historic moment in punditry … Shearer gets something spot on!! http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40924557
Thanks GH for a good read.
Was never bothered about
Gnabry leaving either. Good
luck to him.
Be an interesting discussion
after our first Ropey League
game – some of us want only
a degree of rotation, whereas
others want full on squad / youth
only status. We can’t all be
happy 🙂
My preferred 11 for the first game
would be something like….
Ospina
Ash M-N, Calum, Gab
Joel, Le Coq, Willock, Gibbs
Nelson , Iwobi, Chuba
Some may not be here by then
and the likes of Jack, Jeff,
Jenks, Nketiah, Cohen would need
to be considered too but just to
give a general idea.
@Chris 13
Completely agree, preferably a
sickening home defeat in the
last CL group game to go out
and into the Ropey League.
Nelson’s finish for the second goal is reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp v Sunderland at the old Roker Park.
Continuing my theme of music fusions, here’s one of the great movie scenes featuring a traditional African war chant answered by a Welsh regiment singing Men of Harlech … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQrE8vOM0ss
Battle of Rorke’s Drift given the usual Hollywood historical distortions (including the myth that it was mainly Welsh troops defending the outpost, hence Men of Harlech, when in fact less than 20 of the 145 garrison could claim any Welsh heritage) but lots of fun and lots of Victoria Crosses. The fighting scenes, of which this just the last, are terrific, and the acting superb.
The You’re Ropey League will not exist for me this season, I will be spending my Thursdays otherwise occupied, weaving my navel fluff into something nice. The only time it will matter is when we reach the Final.
But the aftermath of Rorke’s Drift was a good deal less romantic (than the film). When the battle was over, the garrison and relief column went over the field, and shot or bayoneted all the wounded Zulu they found there.
I say old chap!

Love this Holic ; “little boy with his face pressed up against the sweet shop window.” Look, like with the Donald, somebody needs to look over Wenger’s comments in advance. Your co-blogger Blogs made a great point y.day, how can you say star players must run down contracts on the one hand but also expect overpaid flops to move on before contracts are up ? More inertia and unease is the result as we walk this dumb highwire tightrope until the window shuts. What Wenger is revealing here is, being kind, complete smartarsery and an exemplary but high-risk poker game or, more likely (IMHO) hopeless misreading of player (and agent) power these days – something that has held us back for years. What Galactico, Superstar or would-be recruit is going to want to be messed around and treated like this, esp with Europey League footy ? It’s a joke. Is he awfully out of touch and can’t read things anymore. Is this shite about a diminution of player power just his latest big picture miscalculation or prophesy (FFP anybody?). Or is it he wants to be the big (best paid) “player” at the club himself. Either way, it’s an intelligent man letting himself down badly. Apols for the negativity but I really hope we get away with all this. I have my doubts big-time and it all looks unnecessarily exhausting and distracting for everybody, just like Wenger’s fekkin contract last year. COYG.
Anyone else think Sanchez has a get out clause in January depending on where we are in the League at Christmas – ie : if we are not in the top 2/3 and challenging he will then be allowed to leave in Jan ?
Listening to Wenger this morning, nothing else makes any sense..?
NDR, just to state the bleedin obvious, if it’s as part of the old contract, that costs us maybe 50 mill. I have no doubt we could get 75 now and we are meant to enjoy balancing the books. Yea, right. If it’s part of a new contract, Sanchez loses an absolute fortune not going on a Bossie. So he won’t sign a new one now, no way, that’s very very clear. You deffo have a point though and Suarez is the test case. Pool finished 7th in 12/13 and then lo and behold he signed the new contract in Dec 13 when they were flying high and on their way to 2nd, should have been Champs but for Stevie G, hahahaha. Let’s hope lightening strikes twice again but does the high octane, livewire Sanchez have the patience for this scenario ? As I’ve also said before, does he work for 12 months on – basically – Walcott/Ramsey type money ? Hope so. I daresay the Ox deal is merely on ice till this is resolved then he’s straight out the door if we can somehow keep Sanchez. Personally, I’d let the Chilean go at 70 or 75 and cut the bullshit.
Mert, Mustafi and Coq expected fit
for Stoke. Sanchez for the Liverpool
game.
The decisions will be about
whether Ramsey starts, Ox or
Belly on the right and keep
Holding in or not I guess.
AW wants Jack to stay apparently,
get fit and show he deserves a
new contract. Wants Ox to stay
too. No progress on Alexis deal
but he’s staying.
Another win against the orcs would
be great, a sequence of wins in Mordor
in fact, say the next 50 would be
perfect.
Just reread my contradiction above, so I don’t really “hope so”, apologies. I hope we sell Sanchez for absolute top dollar, buy well and move on. We looked pretty damned good going forward without him last Friday. I love Sanchez but he’s slipping (slipped?) through our fingers and nobody wants an unhappy bunny for too long. COYG.

#25 – Forgotten about the Suarez / Liverpool scenario – quite allot of similarities indeed.
In my other life as a businessman I would look at this decision by Wenger and say it defies description. In my life as an Arsenal fan , while I appreciate the value of having Sanchez for another season, I regard this decision as plain daft.
The scenario we all hope will come to pass it that Alexis plays out of his skin for a season and helps to win us the title. He then signs on to help us win the CL. Given the side and imbalances we have that is about a 5% chance.
Wenger is taking an extraordinary bet here. A better bet would be to give Sanchez the contract with £400 k a week wages and a break clause ( agreed confidentially ) after a year. He can then walk and it may have cost us around £12 million. We may be able to recoup some of that £12 m when we sell him to PSG for £60 m next year ( he will be on a four year contract) . If Sanchez breaks his leg or does his ACL in a few weeks time we will lose on every front.
If he won’t sign the new contract on that basis we sell him NOW ( i.e. tomorrow) and use the money to buy a replacement .If we leave it any later that won’t be an option and we will have no world class player, our rivals will and we will be giving Silent Stan another £50 m towards buying another sporting franchise in the USA .
If we sell him to Citeh for a stupid fee they won’t be able to play Aguero, Jesus, Sane and Sanchez together anyway. At least one of that group will get pissed off and Guardiola will have dressing room dissent.
I really think Wenger has lost it on this decision which underlines just how much autonomy Kroenke has granted him. I can’t believe a financially literate board would allow it.
For those living in the moment project forward to next summer when we start to count up the £130 m that will walk out of the door. Do you expect Wenger to have a budget to compete with the other big clubs..and Tottenham?
I still believe Alexis will be ala Suarez and maybe Maharez kind of deal. They sign a contract extension, insert a release clause and leave the next year with some club who will trigger it. This will be done as an agreement wherein the player tells the club that he will stay but sign a pre contract with some other club and then he should be allowed to leave with no questions asked the following year. I fully expect Sanchez to stay this season and then leave to a club of his choice. Wenger may just take that for he knows this is his last contract and nothing but winning the league will be acceptable even for himself.
Ox can be let go off provided we are buying a CM for we are desperately in need of one as well as a CB.
If we play at a faster pace than stoke, we will win at the Britannia. I sense Alexis may play a part that game. Stoke will play the way they can but we need to defend better and pass quicker. The role of Xhaka is increasingly important for us and he needs to install a bit more positional awareness along with his wonderful talent.
Why did we not sign Matuidi is beyond me and he went for just around 18 million which is a steal in today’s world.
Not particularly interested in glorifying the British empire’s massacres in distant lands at this point in time.
Tomorrow then? 🙂
TTG – The one that really baffles me is the Oxlade-Camberlain “sale” and I hope it is just posturing when Wenger says he’s not for sale. £35m (if true) for a squad player that I am not convinced the manager rates, despite his chat, is insane. TAKE THE FUCKING MONEY.
Ozil will stay and then go on a free, largely because nobody else wants him.
Sanchez I would probably keep unless we are offered more than £50m
Part of it might be that we don’t actually have a target to replace him. There’s a thought.
Vinay
Re Matuidi, his agent does not do business with Wenger. He was, I agree a very viable option. One of the players we were going to sign umpteen times at St. Etienne but never did.
Nobody will believe it but there is an article on Le Grove today that is worth reading. The comparison with the modus operandi at Juventus is telling
http://le-grove.co.uk/2017/08/16/arsene-wenger-vs-the-director-of-football-we-dream-of/comment-page-1/#comment-2139400
I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with anything I have read on that site before but I’m not a frequent visitor.
Re: Cynic @34. Okay, it was poorly worded then. 😉
At this point in time meant post-Charlottesville, which is what was bringing down. Still is.
Gabriel appears to be off to Valencia for £10 m . Not a disaster but we aren’t seeing our players go for silly money. If Wenger is not buying anybody else because he has to sell the deadwood he will have had yet another summer where he hasn’t done nearly enough. He may have won a battle with Gazidis but he is very likely to lose a war with our main rivals. Our new structure with no backroom losses and expensive new hires looks a dog’s breakfast. We desperately need a better goalkeeping coach ( not my view but the view of someone very well qualified to judge) yet we add a new coach and promote Gerry Peyton. Why does Wenger never sack any backroom staff?
We will end up saving a lot on salaries if we unload the deadwood and break about even on transfer fees. Where is the £100 m budget allocated to Wenger being spent? Or was that a story put out around season- ticket renewal time? Is that £100m going to offset next summer’s shortfall when we lose three players for nothing?
Sorry too many unanswered questions.?
bring down was supposed to be “bring me down” in 37.
TTG, those are a couple of very thought provoking posts @32 and 36. The Juventus director of football, whose work is described in the link @36, has certainly been very successful considering also that before he was appointed Juventus were in a very unhappy place.
TTG – In Tony Adams’ book, “Sober”, there’s a short passage about Wenger seemingly willing to do anything to avoid confrontation and letting players do things that any other manager would put a stop to. Indulging Ian Wright, when he was frequently late for training, by changing the time to make it later instead of fining him, for example. Inconveniencing the group to avoid pulling him up.
It was left to the other players to sort him out.
Not the only example given in that short passage, but for me it explains a lot about leadership issues at this club and how we’re such a soft touch.
I’m absolutely certain that AW is playing games with the media. Come the end of the transfer window, I think Sanchez and the Ox will be elsewhere and Ozil will probably still be with us. The club will not give up 90 million quid and nor should they. We have already replaced Sanchez with Lacazette and probably we will buy another central midfielder. I think we are probably having to wait on CL qualifiers to be completed before deals can be finalised, e.g. Seri from Nice. AW can’t say now these players will be sold because it will be playing into the hands of the buying clubs. He’s telling lies, but they are good lies and we just have to be a bit savvy.
Not particularly interested in glorifying the British empire’s massacres in distant lands at this point in time – bt8
Nor am I, bt8, but nor do I judge history by the norms of today.
Of all war films, Zulu probably presents the most historically accurate and balanced view of events from both sides perspectives. And as for the ‘massacres’ it was the Zulu who came to Rorke’s Drift specifically to do the massacring with an advantage of something like 4,000 warriors against 145 defenders. Not to mention they came directly from the Battle of Isandhlwana where 20,000 Zulus had already massacred about 1,500 British troops who basically ran out of amunition.
Forget the morality and enjoy a great movie.
…and as for the Zulu song in the movie, there were three main chants. If they have names I don’t know them, but their intent is clear enough.
The first (not in the link I posted) is all aggression and revelling in the slaughter to come. It’s arrogance and pride personified.
The second, just before the final attack, is a song of regret. That adversaries who have proven themselves in battle must die. The words translate, roughly, as ”Oh lord it is a pity that we have to spill blood, please forgive us lord. We have no choice lord, we have to protect our land, we have to fight for our sons and daughters”
The last song is one of honour, saluting a brave enemy. It would be a great shame to kill such men, nor would it be worth the cost of the casualties to do so. They should be left in peace with honour equal to that of any Zulu.
You had to pick up that Caine bit didn’t ya cba! Watch the WHOLE movie to get the whole point please. 😀
Here’s one for you my friend … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5IZ16UpE7U
Woke up from a vivid dream that Kolasinac was sleeping somewhere in the house, but he was a dog, so I was hastily making plans to go buy a second dog bed. Also was worried that my dog might have been a bad host while I was sleeping.
Sounds like you should lay off the pickled eggs late at night, bt8b.
Few things are more unnerving than a pet dog barking furiously in the middle of the night – as Mad Max once did, right in my ear after jumping up from his bed next to mine. Despite the deathly silence I still couldn’t be sure it was a false alarm and ended up checking out the house and surrounds with my trusty pickaxe handle.
I think Kolasinac is more destrier than dog, bt8, and a stable would be more the go. 😉

I’ve kept a pickaxe handle next to my bed for decades, cba. A crude weapon perhaps, but little skill required, just a good swing and whatever it hits, breaks. Including the dog, the woman (if there’s one there at the time) and, if you’re lucky, the armed invader.
#49 VERY good! 😀
@42,
Blimey Chris,
sounds like the bad old days when West Ham rolled up on the North Bank.
So the cat’s out of the bag in today’s paper – as though we didn’t know anyway – with Arsene Wenger’s admission that the final decision on whether Sanchez stays for football reasons, or goes for financial ones, rests with Stan Kroenke and not the manager himself.
That, plus Sanchez’ “abdominal strain” seems to leave little doubt that the Chilean is off to sunnier climes – don’t tell him about the weather in Manchester, eh ?
This all feels a bit inevitable. It’s just a shame that the truth was not confronted earlier and it is now so late to find a replacement – or, an alternative.
Assuming Gabriel and Perez are sold, the cash pile at the Emirates must be growing steadily, even after the purchase of Lacazette. We can’t buy Neymars or Messis and personally I’m quite happy to see the Iwobis, Reiss-Nelsons and Willocks given a chance, rather than take part in the farce of the current transfer market.
But maybe it’s time the club bit the bullet and paid up the contracts of those blocking recruitment to the squad, who are never going to be selected other than in the worst crisis. We could then recruit some players who might actually get on the pitch occasionally in what will be a very busy season, assuming a decent run in a cup competition or two.

Re: Chris @44. Nice one.
Little did we know that it was going to be no orange haired yellow bellied son of Tricky Dick.
As far as the movie, I will put it on my to watch list on your recommendation. 🙂
Never mind the truth, I would settle for a modicum of good news …
I may be Mr Naïve, Trev but Arsene’s presser was pretty emphatic that Sanchez will stay. Reporters literally pore over every word but I would have thought the decision is taken now to keep Sanchez unless we get a ridiculous bid ( £80mish) or Lemar becomes available . Wenger would become a complete laughing stock if he sells him now.
I find myself getting completely disillusioned by modern football but if Arsene’s is talking bollocks I will lose complete faith in him. As I said yesterday his decision is ridiculous but it’s his decision. If it’s an elaborate smokescreen my disenchantment with the club will ramp another notch
Happy Thursdays?
bummed out
Draxler surplus to requirements at PSG and available for £32m?
FFS, what are we waiting for? Get on it Ivan.
If your wallet is empty and they still want Sanchez, do the swap deal. No brainer, buster.
AW (and any other manager) is in an impossible position during transfer windows, TTG. They are basically being asked what their final position is while that is clearly restricted information so long as negotiations are in train. That’s if they even have a final position given the shifting nature of events as other transfers take place elsewhere.
But I do think it incumbent on him to resolve road blocks like the Sanchez situation with greater dispatch. It seems inevitable that he would keep everyone guessing right up the last day, thus minimising our chances of adequately filling the gap Sanchez would leave. And we’re still waiting with just 13 days to go…

Oil? Some slippery midfielder we’ve signed?
I must be in the small minority who are fine with
how we’ve handled the Sanchez decisions.
As far as I know he wanted 400 grand a week and we aren’t
prepared to pay it – fair enough. As a former comp and ben
director at a large company there are times you just say no
even if they are great people. Sanchez won’t compromise and so
inevitably there will be a parting of the ways.
The next decision we had is sell now or hold him to contract – as far
as I can see we’ve decided to hold him to contract. Again fair enough
to me. The important thing was to decide and that appears to be done.
Personally, I might not have made either decision but I can see the
logic of both and I am ok with it.
Of course the press will relentlessly question AW and, fortunately
or unfortunately for him, he can’t hide like Bilic for example and
say the chairman is taking care of the deal and I don’t know. No-one
would believe Peckham, Chips et al. are taking care of anything.
So he feels he has to waffle something and does. He waffles that
he hopes Sanchez stays, there needs to be some compromise,
he trusts the player will honour his contract and play his best –
all of this seems obviously true. Why bother to do anything other
than waffle at the reptiles? There’s no upside.
If AW started giving out confidential
information then he really should be fired !
Status of Peckham and Chips.

Very thoughtful post – I entirely see your point. My concern ,which you echo , is that I think the big decision to keep him is financial suicide. I really do think there are ways of solving this more creatively but really I’m not close enough to know the real facts. As Chris says what we can’t have is Sanchez sold for whatever price on 30th August with no chance to replace him. If we really went into this window saying – we have a side who came 5th last season with some terrible performances so let’s sign Lacazette and Kolasinac and sell Chesney, Gabriel, Sanchez, Perez and Chambers and we will have a better squad- does that sound realistic. A few years ago I would have trusted Arsene because his early judgment was remarkable. But recently that is not the case.
He was rumoured to have a budget of £100m plus sales and looking at that activity he would have spent around -£40 m. Does that sound like a manager with a plan looking to compete with sides who finished above us last season?
Gabriel joins Valencia

Liverpool reject a third Barcelona bid for Coutinho, said to be close to 114 million pounds. In this climate of the “super clubs” throwing around hundreds of millions as if they were chump change, why should any club accept the third or fourth bid knowing the club have identified their target and will eventually cough up a few million more?
Not sure what is going on on the arsenal.com site, but Bramall Nelson and Willcock have been disappeared from the first-team squad.
And Oil has clearly been sold to be replaced by someone called Ozil.
