The Shortest Review Ever, But Is That A Problem?
Nov 18th, 2017 by 'holic
I suggested in the preview that we have a performance in us every Autumn. Thankfully so it proved today in the most important home game of the season. The neighbours were destroyed, and aren’t we glad about that.
The performance was built on the rock provided by Laurent Koscielny, Skhodran Mustafi, and Nacho Monreal. Please don’t tell me we need to go back to a four. They were awesome.
What we suspected could be a tough test was all but over at half-time. Tottenham have produced some memorable performances this season, but were blown apart by an Arsenal team who knew what was expected of them.
We were always in control, somewhat surprisingly, I’ll accept. How it took us 36 minutes to take the lead is a mystery. Skhodran Mustafi’s header was deserved, although I have since heard there was a hint of offside about it. Perhaps Manchester City will give today’s woeful opponents a couple of points after what they got away with a fortnight ago.
In all honesty watching the first half behind Pochettino was a most unexpected pleasure. Tottenham’s unfit-for-duty-internationals produced next to nothing. The Arsenal were the team displaying the high press, and treatening on most attacks.
One became two when the wonderful Lacazette gave Alexis an opportunity he could not refuse. Even in the normally silent Block 32 a number of the regulars were vociferous in the extreme. I’m sure there must have been some Spurs fans there, but where?
The second half would surely be a nerve-racking affair as the neighbours sought to restore the status quo, but no. Gutless, spineless, the team alleged to have effected a shift in the power of balance were dismantled.
I could go on, about the performance of the mercurial Ozil, about Nacho, Shkodran, and Laurent. About Lacazette. I don’t need to if you were there.
Yes, it’s brief in the extreme, but there isn’t anything to add. We were outstanding, and as we reminded them many times, Tottenham Hotspur. You’ll always be shit.

Short and sweet, Guv’nor, like the shrift handed out to the neighbours this afternoon.
We needed players to stand up and be counted and got just that.
A great 3 points and spud noses firmly rubbed in it.
Happy days.
It’s been a good day.

Nigeria will understand , dear !
Why can’t AW get this performance more regularly? We all know the players are capable enough, so why is it a once-in-a-blue-moon event? My biggest complaint about the latter-day AW is his motivational ability – when he’s actually picked the right starters, that is, and not subbed the best off early for some inexplicable reason.
Ozil remains an enigma, world class (if usually when playing for Germany) but content to hide the fact during the weekly grind. He has never been what I’d call an Arsenal ‘type’ and won’t be until he deigns to give his best most weeks rather than on ceremonial occasions. In that, and the Theo thing, I agree 100 per cent with Cynic.
Yes Shkodran Leader Mustafi was technically an inch off-side, but he gained zero advantage from it cos he had to stop and almost step back to get his head on the ball (accurately delivered by Mesut to the on-side position he should have stayed in).
That aside it was a most satisfactory day, not least after Kane and his Abel Ally were rested for the fortnight prior rather than risk them against Germany and Brazil. They certainly got their taste of Germany today, ay.

By the way, chalk and cheese when Iwobi replaced Mesut today. Couldn’t do a thing right, positioning, passing, shooting all rubbish. How he gets on ahead of Jack is another of the AW mysteries I just don’t get.

Total bollox from the worst musical I ever paid good money to watch. Cliff Richard (enough said). Not a note of music worth humming could I remember as I left the theatre. But I did steal the 3D head idea for use in business theatre programmes I was producing at the time, even managing to perfect the faults in the ‘Time’ production. Sir Laurance clearly failed to keep his head still enough and the whole ‘head’ had to be moved around by servo motors to keep the Olivier film in place. We solved that problem. 😀
Great day Holic and your reflections are spot-on as ever. This was very close to the performance at Wembley against Chelsea and was achieved after an interlull where they retained three players who were able to turn out today. So pleased Kane didn’t score and I do think he is carrying an injury but this was another of the really good performances we can put in against quality teams.
The most surprising thing was the enormous performance by Mustafi. He played like this against Costa last year and at Chelsea and he is a goal threat . I think Cynic is quite entitled to expect better consistency from Ozil but the usual criticism of him is his effort and attitude . He was excellent today . You can’t criticise Sanchez on effort although you can sometimes on attitude but he was up for it today.
The other big Stat is that we have won eleven in succession at home. Long may that run continue. I thought the Totts looked tired and think they may struggle in the league the longer they go in Europe. Welcome to big boys football Tottenham .
Cheers H.
One of the good days.
Cheers.

…of course, if you want real bollox from Laurence Olivier you can’t go past his acceptance of an honorary award at the Oscars when I believe he was sending up the academy something hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSgvp0l1n2s
Note: His actual speech doesn’t begin until 4.03, after the sickening hero worshipping by adoring peers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms8JI4Bc1Qc
Mustafi was no surprise to me, TTG. You don’t get to play for Germany unless you have quality, and Mustafi has alway had it. I don’t think he has always known what is expected of him in the AW plan, and he hasn’t been alone in that either.
What the defence did right today was play 5 at the back when needed and not have one or both wing backs caught upfield. Given Kane’s immobility perhaps we were luckier today than in other games.

Sorry fellas I have just finished watching the MOTD…..
Fist goal…no foul bla bla bla…
Yes there wasn’t much to it indeed and it probably should’t be however!
This is only my own deception and understanding of the game! Mike Dean he’s a lovely fella it has to be said sometimes.
When Ozil was fighting for the ball with Vertonghen a sort of similar thing happened, Ozil did not grab him and the game should have stood and we would have scored. Vertonghen then went flying as if he needed to because Ozil has so much force in his hands etc! I think honestly refs will do utmost to rectify their mistakes. Either way F**k em I don’t care!
As cynic said if we could repeat this game to game I don’t think any fans would complain!
Back to the wine, Holic thank you once again!

one for cba; and how I felt most of yesterday;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyXt5dPEfeQ
This place is https://youtu.be/LR4XNqrqxrU
We had a plan and it worked beautifully. There was unrelenting power and pace in our play. The ball was passed forward, players ran into space something lacking for most of this season. It was like a cup final where winning was the only possible outcome.
The second half was a lesson in how to contain. We let them have the ball and watched while our 3 centre backs put on a show of how to defend with skill while still giving the attackers breakaway opportunities which sadly we didn’t take advantage of.
The atmosphere was amazing, if only we could create this passion in the stadium more often. I had a lovely day out.
COYR
Good to hear, Delia. You could feel the passion even on the streams. If only it could always be like that on and off the field.
@120
🙂
Seems a happy day for everyone.
Tremendous atmosphere all around the stadium, bar one corner of the ground. They must have the worst away support in the country.
Silent Spurs.
As the song goes, “They’ll always be shit!”
Message ends.
Ice cubes in wine? FFS, next you’ll be telling me you put milk in the cup first.
They’ve plenty to be silent about.
Hahaha, let’s hope the gloaters
inherit the earth.
So, all of the pre-match confidence we exuded at the pub was entirely justified, Holic! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Never in doubt and they will, rock solid golden guaranteed ALWAYS be shit – and the first giant dollop will hit the spinner when the scum faithful discover that Kane and Smelly Alley are on their way to finance the debt on the new stadium with a pitch in three parts.
Cudos to Arsene Wenger. Inspirational tactical masterclass. Good man. Great to see Danny Wellbeck back in the fold. Thanks to Theo for selling a few scarves at the Finsbury Park shop. You’re well worth your £140k pw, mate.
And, Bath, those afters were very fine and very much enjoyed. BIG thanks. 🙂
Abu Dhabi oil revenues will ensure City win it. No reason why we shouldn’t be second and put another couple of silver cups on the shelf.
Oh my. What a day. My son played hookey from University to be at my side – great call! The North Bank was like a family reunion. All the usual faces there for the big game (for some of them the first time this season). Very few, if any tourists. Only Southampton Gerry missing. My neighbour Jamie brought his four year old to his first NLD. We agreed that this was an occasion when he definitely needed the chat on the way home that what was heard at football stayed at football and shouldn’t be repeated in front of his Mother or Teacher!
The atmosphere, as Delia and the Guvna have said, was fantastic. Everyone standing and roaring the team on. As one song ended another would start up. The one that ends with Pottenchino’s Mother being a lady of the night got a lot of airplay, as did “you’ll always be shit” and “61, never again”.
A brief sidebar if I may about the atmosphere at games. Firstly, anyone who says that Highbury was always a cauldron of noise either never went there or has a very selective memory. Secondly it is a fact of life that, just like, and related to, the team’s performance, sometimes it’s fantastic and sometimes it …isn’t. My last two games at the Grove sum this up. Red Star Belgrade was, frankly, the worst game I’ve seen all season and the crowd was silent. Yesterday was our best performance since the Cup Final and the noise was loud, rude and incessant. Plus ca change (that is your actual French)!
Every man jack of ours was magnificent but I must agree with Arseblog this morning that it was our three centrebacks who were at the heart of it. But it was a good game, played at 900mph and a couple of spuds impressed me. Trippier crosses the ball really well (although I loved the bit where he tried to foul Kolasinic in the air and just bounced off. Bit like kicking a concrete post) and I thought their centre back Sanchez was the best of their defenders.
When we scored twice in five minutes there was pandemonium. It took five minutes afterwards for folk to gather their glasses, hats, keys, phones, children (not really) from the far flung rows where they had ended up.
Of course we were still concerned. We were running a sweepstake about when Xhaka would be sent off after his first yellow (I had 55 minutes) and that could have changed the game but thankfully nobody collected. I loved the change in tactics where we were at last making use of the pace of Laca, Ozil and Alexis via the long ball over Spurs very high line and they swept towards us time and again in the second half. Even Coquelin put in an excellent cameo!
Gradually we began to realise that this was it. Our defence had the cigars on and Spurs were just lumping it up to Lorente. The last ten minutes were relatively scare free (one athletic save from Cech apart). The opposite corner began to empty at 85 minutes and was very threadbare at 90. In contrast huge numbers of our fans stayed to cheer the lads to the echo as they came to say cheerio and then left the ground.
Day’s like that are why I go to football.
?c100?
wotcha esso
jolly fucker indeed
?????????
Countryman100, I loved the bit in your first paragraph: “We agreed … that what was heard at football stayed at football and shouldn’t be repeated in front of his Mother or Teacher!” It reminded me of the first time I was taken to the Arsenal by my older brother in the 67/68 season. I heard the word ‘wanker’ for the first time – I had no idea what it meant but somehow knew it might be wise not to ask my mother (who’d already told me I wasn’t allowed to go to the Arsenal!) or teachers. It was great to hear the crowd come over on the TV and I’m soooo happy for all of us when we feared the worst! Great evocative report, Countryman100. Thank you! So glad you had such a great day! And ‘holic, thanks for providing this wonderful sanctuary 🙂
Sad news from down under: RIP Malcolm Young.
Bodrum Gooneress – thank you for your very kind words! Can you watch Arsenal games in Turkey? How long have you lived there?
Arsenal first; Manchester United last. Musta been a very good year.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930–31_Football_League
A very happy mood in the bar and it is right we should enjoy it without too much immediate analysis.
Particularly enjoyed Countryman’s account( as I always do). I have lost the art of enjoying football for its own sake. I scarcely watch non- Arsenal games on TV and one day I will be able to accept not going although I will follow Arsenal closely from afar.
Stories abound tonight that we are signing Dortmund’s scout although yesterday we were supposed to be signing their Sporting Director. I doubt we will get both.
One thing that our win over the Spuds did do was to underline how much negativity there is in the media towards perceived failure. I was pleased to see the Spuds getting pilloried because of a lack of silverware. People really need to appreciate how much more successful a club we have been than them . Their cupboard is completely bare and ours is full of FA Cups. They would kill to win the Cup .
Bragging rights are ours so let’s enjoy them.
What do you think of Tottnumb?
Apparently Pochettino wouldn’t swap our three FA Cups for what he has achieved at WHL. LMFAO.
He needs help, poor bugga. Which reminds me of cba’s #111 “can a cover version be better than the original”. Try this … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6QtEfw–z4
Chris @138, that certainly is better than the original. Truly marvellous.
As is this, a classic in its own right:

Holic, Countryman,
Very different and both very enjoyable reports.
Tottenham were shit ?
They were exactly as good as they were allowed to be: “shit” will do nicely ??
Everyone from front to back was excellent yesterday. I tried to watch Watford v Wet Spam on TV this afternoon – a game that would have embarrassed League 1.
How could we play like we did yesterday but lose to Watford for heaven’s sake ? That has to be put right.
A great day yesterday though – one when I badly missed my on-loan ticket. I’ll be happy to miss it a few more times this season if we continue like that.
Great to see the young Joe Cocker, bath. The only time I saw him live was towards the end of his career when he was pretty much a caricature of himself, quite sad really.
And yes I agree, better than the original. Mind you the original was sung by Ringo, so no surprise there! Likewise the original Help was hardly a classic Beatles track, and wouldn’t have been anything without George’s descending, jangly guitar figures which made the track distinctive.

TTG @136 – “They would kill to win the cup”
Here’s what they’ve done at White Hart Lane –
http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/event/white-hart-lane-demolition-continues-700054203#demolition-continues-as-work-progresses-on-tottenham-hotspur-fc-new-picture-id696908920
and they still can’t find any silverware 🙂
Garth Crooks’ “team of the week” article on the Beeb makes for very pleasant reading. He’s included 3 Arsenal players, and predictably used each entry to spout his bitterness and launch further pointless attacks on Arsenal fans. Lovely stuff.
Just read the Garth Crooks team
of the week piece B.O’B mentioned
– he’s quite the buffoon. Er……
I mean Crooks there of course.
Talking of buffoons, Pukis has been
fired. I suppose he’ll be rehired by
a relegation candidate sometime in
January. The firings seem to be
coming earlier this season.
What has been noticeable with WBA is the way that Pulis has sucked the joy out of their supporters. They used to be a lively bunch, bringing big numbers and singing their socks off (boing boing baggies). At the game earlier this year at the Grove you could have brought the crowd in a couple of minibuses and they were pretty much silent throughout.
Sometimes Premier League survival is not enough if you play with a back five, three DMs, tell your full backs never to go beyond the half way line and just lump it up to a big fella up top. He’s had plenty of money to play with as well.
Good riddance and fuck off.
But only the brain-dead underestimate John Farnham.
He was great as Jim Baines in Crossroads.
😉
OsakaMatt @155. Thanks for the link to the Garth Crooks team selection. The phrase “tortured reflections of a S**rs fan” comes to mind. 😀
bt8,
Yep, his bitterness is just our pleasure
🙂
Nuffink like a nice cuppa tea.
Arsenal have a new head of Scouting, Sven Mislintat.
http://news.arseblog.com/2017/11/arsenal-confirm-mislintat-appointment-as-rowley-steps-down/?utm_source=feedburner.com%2Farseblognews&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+arseblognews+%28Arseblog+News+-+the+Arsenal+news+site%29
Maybe a watershed moment, maybe bugger all
Is it Tony Pubis, Penis or Pukis? Let’s recruit him as defensive coach ?
I know I said, in moment of frustration at our catastrophic defensive ineptitude at some point earlier this year that they could do with a certain T. Pulis drilling them. However on calm reflection, I retract that suggestion particularly as he is now available.
Having seen 89 and looking forward to the DVD awaiting my return home tomorrow, I do think that a certain G. Graham could have made a considerable contribution in that area if certain individuals could swallow their pride and let bygones be bygones.
Different times, different mores. He was the only one to be sanctioned for a universal practice. It’s time for hatchets to be buried.
As for those who damn him for taking a job up the road and winning one of the two pieces of silverware they have won in the last twenty years (not checked, I am sure someone will correct me – I can’t be very wide of the mark), the man didn’t earn much as a player, didn’t milk the compensation game like Moyes or Allardyce for example and had to earn a crust. He is Arsenal froo and froo.
Cuppa char anyone? ?
Bath
Good call re George Graham, he built a wonderful defence. He was the only manager punished for taking money but I’m sure we can all think of a few legends who did this regularly . Another Arsenal witch hunt.
FACT: Tottenham have had more managers since the Premier League began than they did in their entire history before then.
If you include caretaker managers which is all of them.
More on the lunchtime stroll. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I spoke to someone very well connected at Southampton today. He often sits next to Le Tissier at St.Marys. He said that Southampton are very keen on resigning Walcott from us. The wages are an issue but Arsenal may subsidise them .
If we could do a deal to prise Van Dirk away that would be a very interesting deal.
