Gunners Blunt The Chelsea Menace And Dare To Dream
Jan 10th, 2018 by 'holic
As in the league fixture at Stamford Bridge in September the manager went into the first leg of the Carabao Cup with his best player, Alexis Sanchez, on the bench. Fortunately Skhodran Mustafi and Granit Xhaka were fit to start, but Mesut Ozil was ruled out by injury. Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck joined Alexandre Lacazette in the Gunners spearhead. Interestingly, young Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was also among the Arsenal substitutes. Jack Wilshere skippered the team.
Chelsea it was who had the first opportunity when Morata outpaced Chambers and Mustafi but could only hit the side-netting from a tight angle. When Hazard attempted the same in the fifth minute Mustafi was quick to step in front of his man and clear the danger.
The Gunners won the first corner of the match as the clock ticked past eight minutes but as is so often the case we failed to clear the first defender. This opening phase was turning into a cat and mouse affair with both sides pressing industriously. It didn’t make for much of a spectacle. One Bellerin strike aside the crowd were being duly silenced by the fare on offer. A couple of spoiling fouls by Kante and Xhaka didn’t help the flow of the game.
Midway through the half Jack Wilshire chipped a ball in behind the Chelsea defence to give Lacazette the sort of chance he would have wanted more of this season, but the French international sliced his volley high and wide. At the other end David Ospina found a driven cross too hot to handle but he managed to recover his parry at the second attempt. Was the match about to open up?
Alonso’s driven cross was deflected out for a corner by Chambers and in the phase of play that followed Ospina managed to turn another fierce Moses effort onto the post. There followed an Arsenal corner at which the video assistant reviewer was summoned for the first time when Calum Chambers ended a grapple with Alonso by pushing him over. He was perhaps fortunate to escape with no more than a warning. A second review could have resulted in a yellow card for Bellerin’s challenge on Fabregas but Martin Atkinson kept his powder dry, as it were.
The VAR was called on a third time when Ainsley Maitland-Niles appeared to have been brought down in the box by Moses but between them the officials opted not to award the spot-kick. That was preceded by a fine Courtois save from Iwobi. The match was improving as a spectacle. Mustafi was another to escape with just a warning for hauling Morata down and then denying his clear offence.
As the half wound up Ospina had to get down quickly to prevent Fabregas from heading the hosts into the lead. His goal-line clutch was just what we needed to deservedly get to the break on level terms.
Chelsea started the second-half on the front foot and forced a couple of corners. The second saw Christenson head narrowly over the bar from close range. The pressure would be on them to win the home leg so perhaps it was not a surprise to see them adopting a more positive approach. When Wilshere surrendered possession cheaply Xhaka was forced to take a yellow card for the team by bringing down the marauding Rudiger.
Alonso just failed to connect with a corner as the Gunners desperate rearguard action was being fully tested. Wilshere limped out of a challenge with Drinkwater and couldn’t run off whatever the problem with his ankle (again) was. Before the skipper could hobble off Morata drew another diving parry from Ospina. Substitute Mohamed Elneny couldn’t get a touch when Morata got clear and slipped the ball under the dive of the onrushing Ospina, but mercifully the ball rolled the wrong side of the post. I couldn’t help but think that we might have been better served had the departing Francis Coquelin been available from the bench?
On a rare break Maitland-Niles floated a ball into the box that saw Courtois rush to claim between Welbeck and Lacazette. Spirits uplifted the young stand-in wing back swept a ball across the pitch that Alonso was happy to head out for a throw-in. With 65 minutes gone Alexis was sent on for (you’ll never guess!) Lacazette. Almost immediately we had another let-off when Christenson again missed the target with a header from a corner.
Drinkwater made way for Willian as Chelsea looked to inject fresh legs into the attacking third. Going into the final twenty minutes you had to admire the dour defensive performance of the Gunners whilst wondering if they could possibly keep it up until the end? Iwobi broke but his toe-poked attempt to finish from distance was never going to trouble Courtois. Alexis gave him ‘the look’.
Willian’s curling drive in the 75th minute drew another good save from the alert Ospina. I’m probably tempting fate here by suggesting he is our form goalkeeper of the moment. He was called upon moments later to drop on a speculative Alonso effort. We broke again and Welbeck spun to create a shooting opportunity only to see it blocked. Xhaka risked the wrath of Mr Atkinson by going through the back of Morata but the referee was in relaxed mood. He did produce a card when Kante hacked down Welbeck as we sought to break again.
Alexis won a free-kick when bundled over by Willian and as we prepared to take it Chelsea sent on Bakayoko for the surprisingly ineffective Hazard. The Arsenal, encouraged, enjoyed a little spell in the ascendancy and Xhaka drew a save from Courtois. All of a sudden the ‘holic pound wasn’t looking such a daft punt. Elneny’s trip from behind on the frustrated Morata earned him the third yellow card of the night.
Welbeck’s challenge on Fabregas saw the VAR being consulted again but for the fourth time there was deemed to be no clear and obvious error. It’s early days, but the use of VAR here was demonstrably a success. The massed ranks of the travelling faithful in what was once the Shed roared their team home to a truly excellent away stalemate. It won’t be any easier at home, but we have given ourselves a real chance of another Wembley day out and quickly laid to rest the memories of Sunday.
This was a good evening, ‘holics.

Get in!
Cheers H.
Comprehensive report. Decent result.
UTA
I’ll definitely settle for that:
Great quick report Holic!
I thought we were much better in the first half, without Jack in the second we struggled big time, Alexis lifted the spirits when he came on a little.
A decent result considering the line up.
Is Mavropanos our mascot?
GSD, big slice of humble pie from me. That was a gutsy performance from a makeshift side. I really didn’t think Wenger would tactically outsmart Conte yet again. ?
bt8.
Behave yourself.
Soporific is the only way i can describe that first leg.
Given the quality of the other semi last night, this was very much after the Lord Mayor’s show.
Even though Chelsea fielded a full strength side, there just wasn’t the passion and commitment that we saw in the league game last week.
This Trophy very much at the bottom of the their win wish list, which the same could always be said of us in recent years.
But given the paucity of our form so far this season and already out of the FA Cup,this trophy is probably the only one we have a reasonable chance of winning if we get through.
With so many senior players in the sick bay,i don’t think you would have found too many Gooners who thought we would keep Chelsea scoreless away from home for the 2nd time this season.
For all the negative comments in the bar before and during the game, about how shit certain players were, and how badly we were apparently playing, last time i looked,we had kept a clean sheet against very strong Chelsea line up.
Every player worked his socks off, stuck to the game plan and came away with a result.
So well done to the lads who did us proud for a 2nd time this season,at a ground which has been a graveyard for us for quite a few seasons.
That was even faster than Morata goes down, ‘Holic.
I do think we were immensely fortunate to come away with a draw. We look bereft of ideas against the poorest Chelsea side in many a season. The back three and Sir Arthur Maitland-Niles, DFC put in a shift, but Ospina was again our best player. Was Iwobi saving himself for the after party? Why wasn’t he rather than Lacazette hooked for Sanchez?
H and Clive. Gutsy indeed. We looked like we gave a damn and we are still in the tie. I’m happy with that.
Well done you Gunners, a solid team performance. To keep a clean sheet against the Chavs is no mean feat especially with the number of first choice absentees. It was not pretty to watch but we achieved a result which will give the fans hope we can win the second leg at the Ems and give us another day out at Wembley .
Pick a proper team at home and win the game.
I had a retirement party with large numbers of Chavs and Gooners. The Chavs were not as optimistic as I expected . One lad said he thought ‘we had them worked out’. Possibly results suggest that but I’m not sure we had them worked out last week!
But this was an excellent result. I’ve run it through quickly and it is clear we defend better in a three. Sunday was an aberration tactically especially with BFG involved. Not sure if Chelsea would prefer to face Sanchez rather than Iwobi. The lad has to start justifying his place more consistently.
I did comment on Sunday that Wenger is able to rally the troops effectively in a crisis and does so regularly. He responds to crises well but it would be preferable to avoid the crises in the first place ! ?
It’s a 50:50 situation . We are at home in the second leg but have no away goals. So we have to win. It would be nice to have Ozil and Ramsey back and Jack fit again. Let us all hope his injury is not serious.
Excellent report,
Thought we did very well in the circumstances. If anyone can find a left back at Shenley to take his place, Ainsley Maitland-Niles really needs to be moved into midfield. He is a talent.
Hope Jack is not seriously injured – he is back in great form. His contract is up in the summer – just in case nobody at head office had realised.
Happy Retirement, TTG !
Hope they presented you with a spill-chucker ?
Decent result and a pragmatic
performance.
Best of luck to Coquelin, by no
means a great player but I could
never fault his effort.
Cheers guv’na. Thanks for a speedy & comprehensive report. After all the doom & gloom its much more pleasant to ponder over a gutsy display and result. We didn’t offer a lot going forward but that wasn’t our prime concern tonight. We defended well as a team, particularly the midfield ( which partly explains our lack of momentum up front ). If we can defend like that in the return leg with some of our missing injured players back in the team , Wembley may indeed beckon.?
This lad AMN looks a player – hoping he gets a run in midfield soon.
TTG wishing you a long and happy retirement – this time next year you will be asking where did I find the time for work!
It’s like both sides agreed not to risk injury in the first leg (bad luck Jack) and go for it in the second. We shall see.
With a front line of Welberk, L’Exocet and Iwoeful, how come it’s the only one who knows how to score that gets subbed? I give up.
Is that four draws from four with the Chavs this season? With Comm Shield won in pen shoot-out. Extraordinary.
According to AW…..
AMN is essentially a DM and will get
more chances there now that
Coquelin has moved on and Nacho/
Kola are coming back.
I think it’s fair to give him a shot
based on what we’ve seen of him
so far.
AW looked like he was in a coconut shy up in the press box. Probably feels like that wherever he sits these days. He must dream of that quiet office in the upper reaches of The Grove that is beckoning. The one with ‘Godzone’ on the door.
Not sure I should really like this, given the ages of Jett and Currie back when … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqEh8OBQfmY
Just reminiscing after the Kristen Stewart Runaways movie turned up on TV recently…
Happy retirement, TTG.
And the new Greek CB will stay
with us instead of going out on
loan – reading between the lines
I guess that means no more
merting from the BFG.
I hope we can find a home game for
Mert before the end of the season.
Be nice for him to get a farewell.
Trev@14: There are three left-backs in the Academy, Chiori Johnson, Tolaji Bola and Marc Bola (on loan at Bristol Rovers), of which the unrelated Bolas ae probably the best prospects. Talking of loanees, any one know how Cohen Bramall is getting on at Birmingham City? He appears to have had only two starts and four appearances as an unused sub. Is that enough playing time to advance his development?
Nice write up H. A more than decent result and one that few of us would have expected after the weekend.
I was surprised to see Iwobi start after his party antics. I’m not sure what message that sends out to the rest of the squad re discipline?
Sad to see Jack limp off. I hope it’s very much short term and nothing major. He’s been our best player in recent weeks and a joy to watch. Personally I was very pleased to see him given the armband and hope that he’s given it permanently next season.
Like you I thought that the VAR was a massive success. In the late GN term I think it will not only correct mistakes but it will also have preventive qualities. Are players really going to dive or cheat as much knowing that after a short pause that they could be outed in front of millions? It may well make them think twice. I also think that there will be a lot more acceptance of decisions after a referral. Who knows, a bit of respect might even come back into the game?
All set up nicely for the return leg.
Best wishes TTG for a long and happy retirement.
Oh yes, I nearly forgot. Happy Birthday H. I hope you have a top day.
Late GN term????????
Long term even…
VAR was a massive success because they didn’t need to use it to do anything. It wasn’t VAR that was the success, the referee made all the right calls.
Happy Birthday Holic!
I was feeling markedly more upbeat after that performance last night.
And then I read this…
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/fast-eddie-clarke-dead-motorhead-aged-67-dies-died-cause-best-songs-albums-a8153266.html
That is the classic three piece Motorhead line up all gone now. The band that got me into music some 37 years ago…Very sad.
Just a reminder to anyone bemoaning not getting an away goal or fearing giving one to the Chavs in the return that in this competition there is no away goals bonus. That only comes into play in the extra time period of the second leg, which is just plain weird. All competitions should just jettison the away goals bonus entirely.
A good night indeed and an excellent report to boot. Delighted to see VAR introduced following the excellent example set by our egg chasing brethren so long. Luddite concerns over delays to the game proved groundless as they have in rugby. AMN is developing ‘by the week in front of our eyes’. Looking forward to seeing him in midfield. We need some solid ball winning there. Friends in February, HOLIC, Bath or. Am I getting ahead of myself?
Happy Birthday Holic !
Ned,
With all those Bolas to choose from in the academy, let’s hope we don’t finish up with Tom or E Bola ?
Wishing you a very happy birthday ‘holic – the swinging 60s one of the best times ?.
Trev @ 32 – heh, up to your high standard ( that is meant to be a compliment). ?

Good thinking Trev because it can be a bit of a lottery ?

I’m still keeping fairly busy but am just not being paid for it!
Ned re Bramall he has really struggled and as you suggest has not held down a place in a team that has done poorly in the Championship. It’s fair to say that none of our loanees are doing well anywhere. Even Nwakali in Holland is finding it difficult to hold down a first- team place and most of them aren’t playing. For instance Martinez at Getafe has scarcely played.
A critical person might feel it’s another example of a club that has problems in its recruiting and development of players.
Mkhitaryan is apparently being offered to us in exchange fir Sanchez with us getting £20 million. I would have thought that’s worth considering!

Fancy accusing a man of the law of interfering with livestock ! ??
Ornstein says we are selling Sanchez to Citeh and targeting Malcom of Bordeaux. So we lost £30-40 m and ended up selling Sanchez to Citeh anyway who have dropped four points this season without him in the side. Did we get £40 m of value over the last four months? Would be have significantly strengthened them?
Could we have bought someone in the summer who might have not pissed off the rest of our team ?
Wenger apparently has an Economics degree.
A lot of people would quite like to have bus stop opposite their house.
But not these people. Bless ’em

Trev@32: A pair of Bolas in your hands. What could possibly go wrong?
A birthday, ‘Holic? A glass raised.
Malcolm of Bordeaux …. sounds like a bloke from a dating agency.
Oooh and happy birthday H
TTG@39: Thanks for the updates. Sadly, it seems a common pattern for our loanees. Also, few youngsters that get sold seem to flourish after their Arsenal days. You are right. It does say something about our recruiting.
TTG, Also best wishes for your retirement. The real work starts now…
Is it true that Malcolm of Bordeaux was named for Malcolm X?
Happy Birthday H. I hope its a good’un.
Happy birthday ‘holic and happy retirement TTG. I’m six years younger than you but I went last year. As you say, I’m not really retired, just unsalaried!
Ned, if he’s from Bordeaux he should be a red then?. If he comes here he will feel at home as most of the supporters of late like a good whine ?
My coat’s already on.
TTG@47. I’ve genuinely lost count of how many times some of us have said that in the bar. Buffoonery at the highest level.
Corriere dello Sport saying deal agreed with Ancelotti to replace AW at the end of the season.
http://www.corrieredellosport.it/news/calcio/calcio-mercato/2018/01/11-36790998/ancelotti_per_il_post-wenger_c_laccordo_con_larsenal/
Uply@58: 🙂 Trev quaking in his boots.
If we ever want to bring Coquelin back to Arsenal then his buyout clause is set at £71 million????
Your Italian is clearly better than mine Ned.
@60, NBN
He, Xavier Jacobelli, claims that a deal is agreed “in principle”. The agreement, if any, can’t be official since both managers are currently tied to a contract (Ancelotti until the summer of 2018, with Bayern).
Frankly, it doesn’t look like there’s much in it. No sources mentioned, no quotes whatsoever – only this dude’s opinion. There’s a link on the bottom of the article to the “full version of the article”, but it’s behind a paywall. I did dig however a video of the him, talking about the very article (link below) and he’s saying nothing new in it.
http://www.corrieredellosport.it/video/video-rubriche/100-secondi-con-rds/2018/01/11-36818048/i_100_secondi_di_xavier_jacobelli_l_arsenal_soffia_ancelotti_all_italia_/
Who is Xavier Jacobelli? His Wikipedia suggests he’s quite a well-known, experienced journalist, who’s worked for most of the big Italian sport rags at some point. During 2012-2015 however, he appears to have been the editor-in-chief of calciomercato.com (probably the Italian equivalent to the Daily Express when it comes to transfer market news), and that is enough for me to turn a deaf ear to anything that he claims!
Looks like Theo might be off to Everton, which is mostly down to Wenger having a sulk because someone told the truth after a dismal performance.
If I was Walcott I would refuse a move until the summer. Forget the World Cup, hedge my bets on Wenger leaving and see what the new man wants from you.
If Wenger carries on clinging to his job like a comfort blanket, you go somewhere in the summer on an even more reduced fee which might mean more wonga for you in signing on bunce.
You win either way, if you can put aside the forlorn hope of the World Cup and forget that.
Stay, or insist you will only go on a loan.
I’d be surprised if our board
planned ahead any further
than yesterday so I can’t
believe the Ancelloti story
either.
Who is Xavier Jacobelli?
Didn’t he do a variety show on the BBC in the 1950s?
Happy birthday, ‘holic! And I hope you will be, are, or were enjoying your trip to the west country.
Ancelloti out!
?
Ancelotti (Still) OUt!

Re: GSD @7. Never thought we would go Greek on the mascot thingy, was simply searching for an explanation of his mysterious bench presence. 😉
Rev AL @73. Entertaining musicians at last. 🙂
MUst say, the music in 72 and 71 are not to be sneezed upon either.
Or the musicians.
One little mistake…….
I’m going to call him Carlo from
now on.
Carlo out!
Anyone to follow Brahms, Rev AL ?
I’ll make a Liszt ??
@73 – how did they get Ray Parlour playing that banjo ? ?
I’ve just got a Handel on it – Wagner Out ! ?
? Up 81

Not the Huddersfield manager I presume, Uply?
The Manc/chav domination is getting very old, so Bach to the future it must be!
I’m shocked by all these rival punsters ….
Given me a touch of Post Traumatic Strauss Disorder ?
But never mind,
I’ll soon be on the Mend’ol’son. ??
We let Little Mozart go but still have Mathieu Debussy – perhaps we can swap him for Ravel Morrison ?.
No train service tomorrow. Will have to catch Debussy.
The biggest Arsenal fan among composers? Gounod.
Composure gentlemen, composure …
(88 works much better with a slur … jus’ slayin’)
Malcom in the middle, hmm. I think Cristian Pavon could be a better buy, but I suspect City won’t offer enough for Alexis and will wait for the summer.

Digital cellos of course, but that’s what they were supposed to be. When I recorded a version for a show I put a bank of real cellos in there and they sounded utterly majestic.
@72
by the way hello Rev Al – no
offence taken.
Although some of you deserve
a damn good haydn or at least
to be sent off – hie thee to
a punnery
Apart from @85 – that was a
cracker.
Tho to be fair @81 wasn’t the pits
either.
In fact I actually don’t want
Karlow as the next manager.
I get the whole transitional,
safe pair of hands argument
but in many ways Bertie Mee
was a risk, GG too and of
course AW. Better to think
out of your box as they used
to say in creativity seminars.
I always laughed at that bit.
AW seems to believe there’s still
a chance Ozil will stay but that he
naturally wants to be in a team
challenging for the PL title.
Anyway AW is more hopeful than
last summer. Sadly that seems to
be the opposite of most supporters
feelings.
But at least good news on the
blessed ankle of Jack.
And Aaron is back in the squad –
that’s er good news too.
And while I’m chucking in a few
opinions – Malcom has potential
but is not a replacement for
Alexis, nowhere near the output
just yet.
A ton before breakfast on a Saturday
morning – not many can say that.
Well in OM and keep up the good work. Nothwithstanding your time zone advantage. 😉
damn godd haydn?
good i mean
hard to know if my eyes or fingers are the bigger problem
Not myself today, I have a bit of a Tchaicoughsky.
Max is also a bit unWeil but would like me to say that while he Offenbachs you can be assured his Bach is worse than his Bitehoven.

damn good haydn?
damn good hiding – bit of a stretch

And so to Sunday –

Sorry, that’s what happens when you wake up having fallen asleep on the sofa !
sofa so …
thanx for the electric cellos Chris … and clearly Trev’s time spent putting (darling, there’s a gulf gag emerging between us) in the puntastic hard-yards in this mighty bar has not been wasted … unlike meself!
UTA!
I didn’t realise AL, but I must have bought a tonic-sofa ?
For all the talk of players coming in, and specifically Jonny Evans, wouldn’t it make more sense to coach the three fit centre backs we’ve spent nearly £60m on to play the system we’re using effectively? A radical idea I know.
I went on a date once with a girl who worked in a supermarket, but so brief was the fling I never even found out her full name. I just knew her as Viv, Aldi.
This is a lie by the way.
Heh ! I wonder if she new Tesco, Nina ?
(Toscanini, for the discerning)
I went out with a girl who was very keen to marry me. I wasn’t in a rush and said just WaitRose. She told me I wasn’t very Cooperative. ?

We seem to have moved seemlessly and very quickly from composers to supermarkets ….
I would have expected that to take a Lidl longer …….. ?
And some supermarket music with van Morrisons –
