Heartbreaking For Young Guns
Apr 29th, 2018 by 'holic
Arsene Wenger went into the match with a slightly stronger than expected team. Hector Bellerin and Granit Xhaka were retained, and Henrikh Mhkhitaryan was afforded a start to get some match-fitness. Selected for his debut was the mid-season signing Konstantinos Mavropanos, promoted ahead of Rob Holding to partner Calum Chambers in the heart of the defence. Reiss Nelson, yet to sign a new deal, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were given another opportunity to impress in the first team.
Full marks to the home support who by and large afforded their longest surviving foe a standing ovation after the teams had made their way out to the middle, and to the club for the gift presented to the departing boss by Sir Alex Ferguson.
On the pitch the opening exchanges were sloppy and Xhaka’s first challenge on former team-mate Sanchez was deemed accidental. An open contest saw the first chances fall to Pogba and Lingard, but the Gunners rearguard held firm. On a breakout Nelson put in the first meaningful effort on goal but de Gea was equal to it. A minute later the early goal we had feared arrived. Bellerin superbly denied Sanchez with a deflection at full stretch but sadly the ball broke to the unmarked Pogba who planted it inside the other post.
Manchester United 1-0 The Arsenal
Former United man Mkhitaryan was a whisker away from an equaliser four minutes later but his drive was inches wide of the far post. Xhaka pulled back Lingard and the United man needs little encouragement to hit the deck. The first yellow card of the match could not be argued about, however. United survived a couple of half decent penalty appeals as the Gunners poured forward in search of the equaliser. It was a spirited response, but could we sustain it?
Bellerin, free as a bird on the right flank, crossed into the arms of de Gea with Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang having found space at the far post. He found that same freedom again shortly afterwards and this time found the head of Aubamayang, unfortunately the weak header was straight at de Gea. At the other end a similarly weak effort from Lukaku bobbled into the hands of a grateful David Ospina, an interesting selection in goal for the visitors.
Ospina was close to being embarrassed when Young’s mis-hit cross smashed into his near post as the Columbian was falling backwards. We went again and Aubamayang crossed to the penalty spot from where Nelson’s diving header was just wide of the target. The half-time whistle brought a temporary ceasefire, with the Gunners far from taking the beating that many had feared or predicted. Would they remain competitive and nick something in the second-half?
A positive start to the half saw Maitland-Niles weave his way into a shooting position in the box but United held firm and blocked the attempt. Lukaku limped out of the contest after a challenge from Mavropanos and Rashford was sent on as his replacement. A minute later Mkhitaryan, enjoying himself sharing the number ten role with Alex Iwobi, placed a bobbling ball inside de Gea’s far post. A superb effort and the Gunners were deservedly on level terms. “Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal” rang out around Old Trafford.
Manchester United 1-1 The Arsenal
Cutting in from the inside-left channel Mkhitaryan went for a brace but curled the ball high and wide. Young’s hack at Mkhitaryan’s knee went unpunished by referee Mr Friend, and then by Xhaka who bludgeoned the free-kick beyond the far post for a goal-kick.
Just past the hour mark there was a quadruple substitution. Danny Welbeck was sent on in place of Nelson to face his old club, Nacho Monreal replaced the injured Sead Kolasinac. United sent on Martial and Fellaini for Lingard and Herrera. Seeking to improve his record to three goals in as many appearances back at Old Trafford Welbeck hammered a long-range drive into the palms of de Gea.
Alan Smith, on commentary, could not stop referencing the lack of intensity in the match compared to years gone by. It may have escaped him that neither side has a Vieira or a Keane in situ but the game was no less attractive for that. With a quarter of an hour remaining Joe Willock entered the fray for the returning Mkhitaryan, surely a shoe-in for a start on Thursday.
United hoisted ball after ball into the box but found Ospina, Mavropanos, and Chambers in defiant mood. Interestingly when Fellaini felled Xhaka he did not receive the same punishment as the Gunners skipper on the day. Funniest chant of the day came from the visitors enclosure. “Jose Mourinho, we want you to stay!” Welbeck fed in Aubamayang who was only denied by a desperate Smalling lunge.
Drama was to follow when Fellaini headed against the post and rebounded over the line off the clearly offside Rashford. The late flag caused a few hearts to flutter. The Arsenal went in to the four added minutes only to have their hearts broken by another ball crossed into the box for Fellaini to glance a header into the corner. It was the cruellest blow for a Gunners team that had given their all.
Manchester United 2-1 The Arsenal
It ensured our worst run of away defeats since 1966 was extended to six, and yet this performance was far and away the best of those. If the first team shows this spirit and determination on Thursday we could yet get one last day out at Lyon.

Swift.
Wonderful game in my opinion.
The lads have a bright future.
Ooooospina!
Like a speeding bullet, Holic!
Unfortunate ending to a very enjoyable game. Several positives for us. AMN is a talent and needs to be nurtured to greatness. I like Neslson. The CB combination of Chambo and Mavropo fared well. Mkhi demonstrated again that he’s a far better player than Sanchez.
In Mustafi’s absence, Xhaka took his role in the spotlight as weakest link.
Anyone but Fellaini I hate that mug he’s such a cheat
I don’t usually enjoy defeats especially to a very ordinary United side although they do create much more lumping it into the middle than any other way but this had moments of encouragement . The two centre backs did very well and with better defensive midfield would have possibly seen us get a point. AMN and Mkhitaryan did very well and had Welbeck been there from the start we might have done even better. This was a pretty gentle Arsenal / United game but we held up well and avoided humiliation.
I thought we deserved a point and one consolation is that United won’t get major prizes while Mourinho is there and really fine players won’t want to play for him. And the winning goal bobbled off two heads it wasn’t much credit to Fellaini.
Ospina is very liable to concede when crosses come in as the last few minutes showed.
Thanks for the report, Goonerholic.
Most of the lads did themselves and the Arsenal proud today.
Big up to Mavropanos, who is as massive as his performance was, Ainsley, Chambers, Iwobi and Bellerin.
The result doesn’t mean squat. A bunch of inexperienced but hungry lads showed that there’s still life left in le Arse.
COYG
Maitland-Niles VERY deservedly MoTM. If Pogba’s worth £95M, how much is Ainsley worth?
Thanks for another quick, accurate report. Very happy that my pre match worry that we could be humiliated once again at the old toilet did not come true. The make shift team played rather well and the young ones did better than expected. The match ending left a bitter taste as losing to Mourinho yet again was something we all wanted to avoid.
Most of our players had a good game day except for Xhaka who had a terrible match. Looking forward to Thursday as winning there would save our season and give us a chance to give the boss a good send off. Least he deserves.
Class Act by Sir Alex, Utd and —-!
Iwobi, useless.
Mavro, AMN, impressive. As was Chambers.
Xhaka, much to do wout help from the more experienced Iwobi.
Miki, protected on the wings; looks good for Thursday.
Athletico ain’t Barca or Bayern. We can do it!
i dunno
Great report Guvna.
Very encouraging debut for Greek Tony.
AMN really deserved MotM. What a performance. Not in the least out of place in that company.
Nelson needs to concentrate on his basics.
Good run out for Mkhi. Hope that knee twist hasn’t set him back for Thursday.
Result doesn’t matter. Nice glimpse of future prospects.
Focus on Thursday now. Go win.
Iwobi had a good game I thought. Mavropanos and AM-N look like they can do the bznss.
I think Mkhi was taken off because of the knee. Hopefully ok.
Kola is likely to be out for Thursday .
Nice one, Holic.
Basically, what Bath said @10.
Mavropanos had an excellent debut in the toughest of fixtures. Looks strong, athletic, determined and seems to have very good distribution.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles, finally played in his best position, was the closest thing to Patrick Vieira I have seen in an Arsenal shirt since the great man left us.
Is he as good as Vieira yet ? Of course not, that would be ridiculous.
But the rangy stride covering the ground, some very determined tackling and challenging, very calm and intelligent use of the ball and the developing physique to go with it.
We have a very, very good’un.
Did he take training this week? Looks like someone got hold of the midfield and defence and explained what they need to do. If the manager had organised the team to this extent for other away games this season he might not have found himself cut adrift.
So @13 is the positive take on things.
However, it has to be said that eleven years after moving to our new stadium, throwing on a bunch of youngsters to see what they could do, away to Manchester United at Old Trafford in order to protect our first team for a Europa League match, is not where we are supposed to be.
Yes, I did enjoy seeing some great young prospects playing with skill and commitment, but it was a huge ask of so many of them at once, which could have gone damagingly wrong.
The Arsenal should not be trying out kids at Old Trafford, 36 points adrift of the league leaders with three games to go.
If it wasn’t for all the other piss poor performances and results this season so far, that would be a mildly acceptable defeat given the irony of a 91st minute winner. The kids done well mostly.
Oh the joy I felt went TH14 done the same to them in our debut season at The Grove 🙂
i dunno
?
Trev nails it @15.
The reason it all has to change.
Watching that I’d be alot more worried as a United fan, they are bang average and that’s after the best part of 500 million – Lots Of bright spots for us today and with a little more composure in the final third we could have nicked it, Onto the game that actually means something !
Up The Arse,
I’ve back read the threads on last weeks Europa tie, and only Cynic seems to pick up on what I thought was the most glaring error, basically it was having right footed Welbeck in a delicious position on the left wing, many times receiving the ball and in a position to go round the man and cross, but won’t do with his left foot, so turns back inside for more tippy tappy side to side.
Surely a tactical change could have been made by AW? Maybe switch Wilshire and Welbeck a couple of times, or take Welbeck off and put Kolasinac on in straight swop?
Yes we’re not out of it, Chelski aren’t much better than us and they managed a 1 – 2 win there but really AW, no subs used in 90 mins?
Jeez… 🙁
Trev,
You nailed it! We all know what happened there last time we played kids so it has to be said performance wise it was perhaps an improvement however I will judge that on the result and we lost therefore as much of an improvement as it was we still fell short in many areas.
Time and and time again Xhaka almost gave me few heart attack’s with his sublime passing, for me AMN and the Greek CB was the highlight of the day. Aub is getting no service whatsoever and I bet he’s finding it extra hard at the moment.
It amazes me why our full backs can’t make those runs, we should use the pitch to draw opposition players in, instead we tippy tappy from left to right exactly in the same mannner we did it against Atletico. There is no movement a lot of static body’s.
Bellerin with acres of space in front of him will never take a pop at what he does best and that’s to run with the ball at the opposition instead it’s either back to the middle or even further. We then invite pressure, lose composure and we know what happenes after that.
Wenger has never been a great tactical mastermind it has to be said, we are always making it twice as hard for ourselves. As a club of this statute our last ditch challenge on the league position is rather pathetic to say the least.
Eyes on Europe league now I hope those lads can do it for Wenger not sure it’s going to be the other way around. As
As for a club we have been falling to address issues and this is why we are where we are!
UTA!
Somehow seems to sum up this season: by no means the second best team on the day but still lost.
#13 and #15 are just as I saw it. AMN just needs a year or two more experience and a few extra kilos of muscle and he could well be PV4 Mk2, although I’d prefer he made his own name.
Mavro could not have imagined he would be thrown into this particular deep end when he joined us but looked cooler, calmer and more collected than I would have thought possible under the circumstances. Not perfect, but more than just promising. And Cal played as well as I can remember, and I remember comparing him to a young TA5 in his earliest games for us.
Nelson didn’t do a lot wrong, but probably would have done better on his usual right side. Miki showed what we missed last Thursday. A couple of good stops by oooooooooSPINA helped keep us in the game. A shame that the offence couldn’t have matched the defensive effort.
Yes we lost, but a very respectable showing considering arguably only Hector, Miki and O’Banger would make our current first XI. I just hope the missing 8 felt appropriately pressured by what they saw and will be determined to prove their worth in Madrid.
Yes, did well and lost.
Just curious Chris – did you forget
Xhaka or was that deliberate?
I’d like to forget him, Matt, he’s a liability, but others had already done a job on him.
No argument from me Chris, just
wondering. I’d sell him this
summer too.
Although it may be that a new
manager will want to have a look
at the existing players before
letting people go.
Xhaka has made several infuriating and costly errors but check this out:
https://news.arseblog.com/2018/04/man-u-2-1-arsenal-by-the-numbers-2/
yes another year has passed and we can hear the gooner bogeyman shout “look behind you.” I should be careful what I say as it appears like the rapture at your home games.
🙂
cusop you had best enjoy your brief ascendancy because your subsequent decline will be sharp, long-lasting, and (from your point of view) painful, sad, disheartening, and all to familiar.
@28
Thanks and it’s true Bath, I don’t think anyone can
argue he’s not a good long passer. Well, I
suppose they could but I wouldn’t believe
them. He’s just too slow of thought and
deed.
Very good observation from Trev which as Bath says encapsulates why we need to change manager. But interestingly I felt similarly after the 8-2 defeat and wondered why Arsenal should be going up to OT with a pathetically under-strength team team four games into the season and just after surviving the CL qualifying round. I loved it when United hated us not as now when they patronise us with kindness.
Not many managers could survive an 8-2 defeat to their traditional deadly rivals , but at least we had tge consolation of signing Andre Santos and Park Chu Yong immediately afterwards!
Whoooooooo ?!
Nice report H.
I’ve only seen the MOTD highlights but was not too disappointed with the performance although the result was obviously not the best.
Mavropanos looks a prospect and already someone with more defensive nouse that Mustafi. Nice to see Mkhitaryan back. I think he could be very important on Thursday.
It was also nice to see the presentation to the boss at the start. Man U have been our biggest rivals throughout his tenure. Both Fergie and Maureen have probably been his biggest adversaries throughout that period. A bit of class I thought.
On to Thursday. Let’s dispense with the negativity and think positive thoughts.
You did’nt mention what l thought was a foul before there first goal a good shout for a penalty from a tackle on AMN by Sanchez along with Ashley Young being allowed to kick his opponent as many times he liked
We got what l expected from a referee at Old Trafford nothing
cusop, hope you are well. Don’t read the Guardian today about White Elephant Lane. Hear those waves old friend, the tide is rushing back in. ?
This one cusop, don’t read it, will you. The tears will flow.

Notice to nightbirds and overseas ‘holics. There will be a planned outage of the server after 10pm UK time this evening. It should only last a couple of hours or so.
We thought we had sung the youngsters on to a very well deserved point but it was not to be. Lots to like from AMN and the Greek and with Miki back there is hope for a positive result on Thursday if the first eleven play with the same determination.
I hadn’t been to OT since the 70s. No screens, no clock, no bags of any description allowed in by away fans and very cramped leg room didn’t encourage me to make a return visit any time soon. They play incredibly dull football under Maureen and their fans seemed totally disinterested until they scored that late goal, we just ran out of steam.
Chelski are one up in the second leg of the youth cup, aggregate now 1-4!!!
COYR
Hello Delia. I went to the Champions League semi-final in 2009 and, as you said, it’s bigger but not better. Awful stadium in terms of seating and viewing angles.
The kids are being taught a painful lesson.☹️
Interesting article @37 ‘H, cheers … PoAchettino – no? Kills 2 birds (one a cockerel) with the one stone; Sol (oh Yeah!) destroying them there nitwits all over again.
Also, noticed (and i may be getting a little ahead meself here, and p’raps reading things a little deep – but as me handle suggests, i’m fella steeped in superstition) in said article that the capacity of the scum’s new stadium/money-sucking-bankrupcy-inducing-concrete-&-steel-Hellhole-ShiteBucket is to be 62,062.
So a mob that last won it in ’61 are moving into …
62 nuffink 62. That’s 62 nuffink 62, to be repeated on every piece of publicity material & club stuff etc., etc. forever, or until they go skint in 4 or 5 year’s time.
62 nuffink 62 (on repeat), it’s written in the seats & they’ve signed it orf.
TenuArse … maybe – but they’re worth it.
Our lads seemed to run out of steam in both games against a very good Chelsea team in the Youth Cup Final. Frankly we were outclassed in the second leg only looking better in the first half of the away leg.
Nevertheless we have some real talent coming through at this level and I think at this range that Smith- Rowe is a certainty and that Amaechi and Virginia could well be first-team players. And young Saka is only sixteen. We could have played Reiss Nelson but I don’t think he would have bridged the gap.
I wonder how many of that team will become first-team players at Chelsea? We play Porto in the Premier League International Cup Final next Tuesday.
I think the bookmaker’s odds on the new manager look interesting. Allegri has jumped forward as favourite. Arsenal is behaving differently now and trying to massage situations through the media.
Allegri would be my favourite and would represent a very serious choice A top manager will only come if the vision and backing we provide is highly ambitious . These are interesting times and we will be able to judge how good Gazidis is much better in the next few months
bath #28 … Yes, I remember well being impressed with Xhaka’s long-ball passing early in his tenure, and it’s still there on occasions. But his determination to dominate physically, which gets him into trouble too often, has hardly adapted at all. He isn’t getting any cleverer with it, imo, and looks like a red card waiting to happen in every game.
Another thing worth mentioning from the game … Alexis Who? Mostly invisible I thought.
You were right Guvnor, I read the
Spud article and tears did flow. Course
mine were laughter at the thought
of Levy, sleepless with worry as he
pondered his folly.
He could try counting league titles
I suppose but that wouldn’t take
long. Perhaps, he should think of
alternative uses for the new shiteium
instead.
the grauniad had another story
headlined
“Wallabies player Phipps apologises

???
it’s nice the humble cow can get
it’s 15 minutes of fame
moo moo moo 50 up
What will cba have to say about that, OM?
re the link @37, ‘Holic, implies that AW’s achievement in managing through a stadium change, and sticking with, may have been greater than many assume.
Cheers H! See you Sunday – in The Gunners early windows maybe?
Thanks for the link to the article relating to the totts stadium. They will go through very difficult times but their revenues will also grow significantly in the coming years. A look at what our stadium did to help grow our revenues in this 2016 article from the Forbes:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/bobbymcmahon/2016/10/04/tracking-the-impact-of-arsenals-move-to-emirates-stadium-ten-years-on-was-it-worth-it/#15c9281f537e
May I?
Ned,
I hope not, I gave all the credit to

I was merely a humble assistant
cos cows aren’t good at typing.
H – Good stuff re “dat ting”.
Kyle Walker saga sounds somewhat similar to Ashley Cole’s. Humongously larger salary and prolific trophy haul following their transfers to Chavski/Citeh. How many more will follow in KW’s footsteps?
cows aren’t good at typing
On the udder hand, they’re great at taking dictation.
Thanks for the link @37 Holic .
Anyone seen cusop since that went up ?
TalkSpite were talking to people last night who were suggesting that the Spuds should invest heavily over the next two transfer windows and not follow Arsenal’s example of “austerity” in order to pay back debt.
That seems highly unlikely anyway – especially having read that article -but their premise was that if the investment did not in fact yield a league title or Champions League win in the next two tears, then they could make up the money by selling Dele Alli and Kane for a combined £350 to £400 million !
There’s no fool like a Spurs fool, eh ?
Spurs have been setting the standard for austerity for a few years, with a net spend of about half a million a year on players for the last five seasons.
Some right bollocks being talked in the press today about our “new manager”.
Rob Holding has signed a new contract, which is decent enough news. He could be a top defender if he gets coached properly. Which may now happen.
@58
similar bt8, except of course
Cole had league & cup winners
medals already when he left
🙂
nothing something many spuds
can say
And yes, I’m back!!
Who missed me? coz I missed you all..
Buvac..who?
Just done with First Degree, back home, dodgy Nigerian economy, no jobs…. Internet access is more difficult than you can imagine.
Good news Wenger resigned/has been sacked.
Let’s do it on Thursday and get in Allegri.
A big NO to 75% of the purported shortlist of candidates please, Ivan
@BB
The Buvac story is so underwhelming
Welcome back, Nigerian.
The press haven’t got a clue so are twitching at the slightest thing. Buvac has been given compassionate leave to visit his seriously ill father. Gazidis and co will be aware that having strived to remove Wenger for a while they need to make the right appointment.
I’m not sure if they really are offering half of Wenger’s salary to the new man.I would find it nonsensical if it were true but I can’t believe it is. I don’t expect a reliable story to emerge until they brief Ornstein- if indeed they choose to do so.
That doesn’t mean we won’t see serious contract or transfer moves. It appears that the club operates differently now.
Indeed TTG. Some papers have Buvac as our new manager and also Rui Faria. They can’t both be having it.
Anyway, we all know Ancelotti turned down the Italy job to come here.
So it’s bound to be … someone else.
The buvac story is simply the press linking two stories, and we know it’s nonsense. We’ve now been linked with Rui Faria, no.2 to Mourinho, which is complete BS. Who’s Pep’s no.2?!
The more this sorry saga goes on, the more I laugh at the statement by Ivan Gazidis about making a bold and imaginative appointment. Do I detect the silent but deadly hand of Stan in all this, as it looks like we are penny-pinching again. We will probably end up with Arteta, or worse, Rodgers at this rate.
Biscuitbum
Arteta is Pep’s no.3!
I’m ready to leap on Silent Stan at any moment but I think the appointment will be a big name which may include PV10 ( who is sort of Pep’s no 4) . I think Josh Kroenke and Gazidis have found the last few years quite tough and want to get some credibility . A nobody wouldn’t cut the mustard .
Real Madrid gamesmanship to the end.
Please God, not this Buvac or Rodgers bs….
I watched that game tonight and thought how many miles behind those two we are*. Whoever the new bloke is, he’s got a hell of a job to do.
*No, I don’t mean Scunthorpe and Plymouth 🙂
Never heard of Buvac, but if his influence on Poo (and Klopp) is half as much as the media would have us believe he could be an interesting choice. Maybe he could persuade Salah to join him?
I’m dreaming again of course…
Fuck RM. Bayern came very close to humiliating them on their own patch. But didn’t.
I thought that about Buvac too
Chris. But then I thought there’s
probably a reason he’s been No2
for umpteen years and also he
hasn’t exactly improved Liverpoo
defensively – anyway as TTG said
the poor bloke’s father seems to
be very unwell and the press jumped
to the wrong conclusion.
Not sure why people want a big
name though – Mee wasn’t, GG
came from Millwall, and Arsene
who? I suppose Herbert Chapman
was a big name and title winner
back in the day.
But now we have the world to choose from, Matt, and foreigners are proving better than home-growners. Possibly because there are more o/s players than homies today.
Yes, the current crop of British
coaches are not inspiring and
I can’t think of any I’d want.
I just meant I don’t mind if we
go with someone not thought of
as a member of the “elite” group
– i.e. Allegri, Enrique, Ancelotti,
etc. I don’t care where he’s from.
I’d be delighted if Gazidis could identify ‘the next Arsene Wenger’, I just hope it isn’t a compromise choice because the best all prefer to follow the guy who follows AW, rather than pick up the gauntlet now.
In all likelihood we’ll be 6th,
our worst finish in 20 odd years.
Basically, 6th in a 6 horse race.
Following AW is pretty much
impossible but showing some
progress in the first season is
very achievable.
Hard to predict really as AW has
moulded the culture for years and
pretty much anything could happen
next season.
Heard good reports about the younger players performance vs Man U. Wasn’t able to see it.
Shame Mavroponos hasn’t played sooner especially given our other defenders showings.
Just reading back I don’t see how the game vs the Man vs represents how shit we currently are. It was a means to an end. Saving our best players for a vital European ties. Just like Mourinho did (and mentioned post match) last season.
Unfortunately Wenger doesn’t have the Portugeezers luck in terms of opponents.
Oh and it’s gotta be Ancelotti or Jardim! 🙂
Thank you very much @bt8
How badly Bayern missed Robben’s tricks on the right flank last night.
To me, that was Wenger’s biggest flaw in the game. Not having a natural wide player who can leave opponents in the dead.
It made us play too narrow and teams stay compact comfortably knowing we can’t hurt from the wings.
Imagine a Robben in his prime playing from the right for us that night against Atletico? Suicide!!!
Much as I would like to believe otherwise, I rather suspect that after tomorrow night, the field of interested candidates will have contracted significantly. Better bag Eddie Howe before Everton come calling!
Imagine Henry in his prime, NGunner…
Well I wouldn’t want Eddie Howe
but “bagging” him seems a bit
severe 🙂
Do we really want a manager who
won’t join because we didn’t win
the Ropey League and won’t be in
the CL ?
Yes, yes we do. Because a manager who won’t accept second best is exactly what we need to kick the arses of the complacent, comfort zone, players we currently have.
Gianluca Rocchi
the referee?
well best hope we win by that
reasoning I suppose Cynic
yep
The Godfather of Florence
oh, now I see.
I looked him up and he does seem
to have a reputation, let’s hope it
works in our favour.
Nonsense to suggest a decent manager wouldn’t relish taking the job.
In fact I know it’s a ridiculous argument because Alan Mr Creosote Shearer has already made it.
Intelligent discourse and logic and that morose simpleton have never met.
