The Arsenal Beat Lazio At A Canter
Aug 4th, 2018 by 'holic
It was a surprise to see an Arsenal Lite XI start against Lazio in Stockholm. Anyone expecting Unai Emery to start with the likely line-up next Sunday will have been put on the back foot. In fact number of the likeliest eleven were being held back for the second-half, perhaps? It was also disappointing to see reports that Nacho Monreal was not with the squad, particularly given the injury sustained by Sead Kolsinac.
There were very tidy debuts for Stephan Lichsteiner and Lucas Torreira, while Granit Xhaka also returned for his first post World Cup appearance. Lichsteiner re-introduced himself to Radu delivering an early flying elbow to an adversary in his recent past. As is the fashion these days the two teams employed the high press so time and space was at a premium in the early exchanges. First to break through and get off a shot was Eddie Nketiah but unfortunately he dragged it wide of the near post.
On co-commentary Adrian Clarke praised Unai Emery for setting the team out as a plan B 4-4-2. He knows much more about these things than me, although I would have said it was more a 4-2-2-2 (Adrian later agreed). I’m nitpicking. Alexandre Lacazette produced a fine effort to a fine ball dropping over his shoulder from Lichsteiner but his volley was saved at the near post by Proto.
After Caicedo had hit Lazio’s first effort wide of the mark The Gunners took the lead after eighteen minutes. Reiss Nelson started the move teeing up Alex Iwobi and when his shot struck the far post Nelson was on hand to bury the rebound. It was good to see a makeshift eleven starting so well. Granit Xhaka’s rasping drive on twenty-nine minutes was inches over the bar from well outside the box.
A defensive lapse on the left ended with Alberto chipping Leno but mercifully the ball came back into play off the crossbar. Then from the other side Radu crossed to the unmarked Alberto who headed wide of the far post. Encouraged, Lazio raised the tempo and poured forward. From a far post corner Caicedo struck an effort from an acute angle into the side-netting. As the break neared Iwob’s toe-poke was wide of Proto’s right hand upright.
At the start of the second-half on came Matteo Guendouzi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah. Aubameyang went on to the left flank, Iwobi switched to the right, and Guendouzi teamed up with Torreira freeing up Xhaka for a more attacking role. This was more like the 4-2-3-1 we could start with next Sunday.
When Radu shoved Lacazette to the floor he was fortunate that the referee did not see it as a penalty offence. Lichsteiner and Lulic enjoyed another exchange after the latter had challenged the former Juve man from behind. This was far from a ‘friendly’.
Aubameyang broke at pace, found Iwobi, and Lacazette turned a poor cross into a shooting opportunity. Unfortunately his deflected effort bounced up into the hands of Proto. That prompted Lazio to make three substitutions while The Arsenal sent on Hector Bellerin, Mohamed Elneny, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Mesut Ozil. Off went the debutants, both of whom could be proud of their performance, Xhaka and Iwobi.
Elneny’s first weaving run into the box saw Lacazette win possession and set up Aubameyang for a very tidy finish inside the far post. Two up and in the ascendency, Guendouzi created panic as he drove through the left side of Lazio’s under pressure defence. The Italians attempted a response but Leno was comfortable in dealing with Alberto’s speculative effort.
The sight of stand-in left-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles down on his haunches created a moment of worry but a re-run of the incident showed that he had unfortunately taken a ball in the orchestras. He recovered his breath and his composure very quickly.
Rob Holding then picked up a yellow card for a late challenge which he clearly enjoyed. As long as we can channel it this new found aggression is not an unwelcome addition to our capabilities. Cue the introduction of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, (no, for the first time I didn’t copy and paste that, I’ve nailed it!), Konstantinos Mavropanos, and Emile Smith Rowe for Holding, Chambers, and Lacazette.
Aubameyang’s hammer of a drive from thirty yards was close to giving us a third goal and Elneny too struck an effort on target from distance as we finished strongly.
Pre-season complete, we look to be in decent shape going into the Premier League next week. Certainly the midfield and attacking players appear to have taken to the new style of play. Question marks probably remain about the goalkeeper and back four if we are being totally honest, but overall I’m encouraged by what I see. Goodnight all.

Get in
Laca-esque
You know more about this stuff than I, but at the point AC said 4-2-2-2, there were clearly two lines of four on the Arsenal end of the field.
Otherwise, agreed with every word.
Considerable promise. Still some worries. Fine first outing for Torreira. I think Lichtie will help Bellerin’s game to develop too. We have some very fine young players developing. Project Youth Mark II?
See you for the West Ham game I hope.
Fine report maestro. I share your optimism for our midfield and attack and also your anxiety and uncertainty about our keeper and backline. Time will tell. However I don’t share your impressive facility with Greek. Henceforth you will be, for me, forever Goonerhololopopopolos. Broken any plates, lately? ?
Ah, two fine gentlemen the first in the bar.
We changed in the second-half completely iBtM, but in the first-half I saw Xhaka and Torreira as a distinct pair behind Nelson and Iwobi who were both quick to get up in support of Nketiah and Lacazette.
I like our attacking options a lot. I’m not sure we have yet resolved anything at the other end but it is early days so allowances should be made.
Excellent report Holic in a satisfactory outing. Football is different nowadays and I would have liked us to play a game with a stable recognisable XI but if we have no idea what team he will pick nor should Pep Guardiola!
The squad has a lot of confidence about it and a good start which would include not losing the first two games and beating West Ham will help us build stability and a better team rhythm. Emery is a tactical nerd and is very aware of the options we have . Some players have had excellent pre- seasons like Iwobi and Guendouzi who probably weren’t expected to be in the shake-up for the first game. Tonight I thought Mkhitaryan looked very good and Leno is a very capable sweeper keeper. Not a clue what CBs we will use, if Torreira will start and whether Guendouzi will come on. One clear thing is that Auba is a very good striker indeed and is a terrific acquisition.
I think we are in decent shape but a dominant CB wouldn’t come amiss
Sorry, Holic, but you haven’t nailed it. You’ve put an extra “ha” in Papastathopolous’s name. Not that I’m pedantic, of course.
Nailed one but not hit all of them quite squarely on the head. Auba and Mavro exhibits A & B. Thanks for the report, ‘holic.
Pedantic. Is that a child’s periodontist? 😉
We were not all on the same song sheet but not a bad performance, all in all. I love what Guendouzi (sp?) is doing but the difference between what he did and what a more experienced player would do was him dawdling on the ball a little too much. Still, much to like about him.
As for our young attackers, they certainly looked lively but do not have a 360 degree awareness, yet. Given time, that will come.
And…our defence…more time together and better communication will eliminate a lot of our giveaways. Not worried about our keepers – both will do fine.
I am looking forward to the season! 🙂

Interesting comments post match by Unai.
Clearly disappointed with our midfield effort in the first half, didn’t feel we had enough ball security, switched to 3 in midfield 2nd half, which he was much happier with.
So I expect a 3 in the middle against City.
He hasn’t ruled out Lich and Torreira both playing against City, but AMN definitely going to play left back.
But if he plays a 3 in the middle, someone will have to miss out up front.
I think Unai might well be a manager with a flexible first eleven
depending on the opposition, rather than having a regular run on side.
Time will tell.
thanks, cynic. i enjoyed that.
“Sorry, Holic, but you haven’t nailed it. You’ve put an extra “ha” in Papastathopolous’s name.”
Oh bugger! Second time lucky. ?
bt8, not one of my better nights, evidently. Cheers. ?
Thanks for the report Guvnor.
I’ve only seen the goals so good
to read the comments here.
From what Emery said afterwards
we are going to go with 3 in midfield
to start the season. One of Mkhi,Laca,
Ozil and Auba won’t start then.
It also seems Nacho is unlikely for
the first game. If AMN starts we’re
going to need to help him against
whoever Shitty play wide right.
Still questions in almost every poisition
– Goalie, RB, CB pairing, which 3 in midfield
and which 3 up front.
My stab at it now based on what we’ve
seen so far and what the boss has said
would be…….
Leno
Hector, Mus, Papa, AMN
Guendouzi, Elneny, Ramsey,
Ozil, Laca, Auba
Afternoon Holics
Thank’s Holic for your full and interesting report.
I have emerged from my summer slumbers where I have spent time catching up with my female friends, now scattered far and wide and who apart from one, a Norwich ST holder, have absolutely no interest in football.
In fact I have been in an Arsenal free zone since going with the Norfolk Gooners to Huddersfield at the end of last season.I have however caught up with the drinks in the bar, managed to get a dodgy stream for the Chelsea match and watched last night’s game on A.com.
I have to say that I’m not exactly brimming full with either enthusiasm or confidence for the forthcoming campaign. Emery wasn’t my first choice for manager and I hope he knows the difficult task in front of him to satisfy the fickle crowd at the Ems. Defeats in our first two games would do more than dampen the expectations of a demanding public!
My initial thoughts on what I have seen so far are perhaps a little harsh. ( Just seen Citi’s first goal at Wembley ).
I’m all for sweeper keepers but there will need to be better communication at the back. I thought Leno put our defenders under needless pressure on a few occasions last night. Time will hopefully iron out any misunderstandings.
The CB pairings have yet to inspire confidence, even Chambers and Holding looked insecure at times against a Lazio side that did have a few chances due to our overplaying in the box. Who will start next Sunday is anyone’s guess, perhaps a Greek duo.
The Rambo situation is not great and never should have come to this point. Rumour has it that the Chavs might put in a bid this week.I hope he stays but it looks as though his agent is looking for an Ozil type pay rise and failing Arsenal coming up with the cash I can see him leaving on a free next Summer.
Our younger fans will love Guendouzi. His flowing locks and flamboyant style will ensure he becomes a cult figure at the Ems in double quick time. Although I love his movement with the ball and eagerness to get forward, his habit of getting caught in possession tells me that he will be a liability against most PL opposition.
It’s difficult to make any judgement on Torreira as we have seen so little of him but he did OK in the WCup and he needs a few weeks to fully integrate with his new team mates.
Attacking wise there is the problem of 4 into 3 doesn’t go if we play 4/3/3. It looks as though either Miki or Laca will be on the bench but we may well play different formations depending on the opposition and what Emery sees from studying his videos.
Well things will be different and I have my fingers crossed that we get off to a decent start. It will be great to see the boys on the train on Sunday for the first time in 3 months. There will be lots to discuss and with a couple of pints at the Hemmingford we will be in the mood for real football.
COYR
.
Fancy not being able to spell Papastathopolous! There is no shame in cut and paste Holic! That name is worth 83 at Scrabble ( I know there are too many letters) .
Bit downbeat Delia. Generally I sense more optimism than for some time although as you say there are a lot of very judgmental Gooners around.
I’m optimistic that the club is moving forwards .
Cheers Holic !
I don’t really care how you spell Sokratis Papastathopoulos – it will be infinitely closer to the correct version than TTG’s will be ?
For me, he will always be plain Soccertits, which I am told was Bloggs’ invention ….
While agreeing with those who were alarmed at our continuing defensive frailty yesterday, I have to part company with Delia on the subject of Guendouzi. He is a teenager who, despite his elevated reputation, is surely entitled to more than a couple of pre-season friendlies to adapt to a new country, club, manager, team mates and playing style.
I followed his movement yesterday, advancing, adjusting and dropping with every small passage of play. I think he looks the closest I have seen to Gilberto Silva, since the great Brazilian left, in terms of defensive instinct and positioning. That deep midfield role is probably the hardest to master in terms of not getting caught with the ball, but this lad might well have the lot – only in my humble opinion, of course ?
And there, right on cue, is TTG !
* looks innocently in the opposite direction *
City made the chavs look very ordinary today. Share Delia’s pessimism about our chances in the season opener. Given our slow defenders and our high line defending against city’s pacy attack, I see only one outcome. I only hope we don’t get a pasting on Sunday. Emery is Guardiola’s bunny and that looks unlikely to change this season.
Those giving out and fretting about Guendouzi getting caught in possession, turning on the ball, etc would probably also complain bitterly if he was passing sideways too much – like so many of his predecessors. No pleasing some folks. I’d say Leno, Hector, Sokratis, Chambers, AMN, Torreira, Guendouzi, Xhaka, Ozil, Miki, Auba. Rambo hurt (could hit him in the bank balance very badly indeed, serves him right). Hector firmly in last chance saloon. Here’s hoping it’s more “But I like you” than “Oh you are awful” with Dick at full time next Sunday. Yikes my defence looks dodge ! COYG.
In fairness KSN , Emery was always managing smaller clubs against Barcelona – it was a mismatch in terms of resources. It’s a bit like saying Eddie Howe has never beaten Mourinho( not sure if he has or not). There is a huge advantage for the person managing the bigger club.
As for that Trev suggesting that I would spell Papastathopolous wrong, I ask you! It’s a piece of cake. But Soccertits is fine with me ?
As for Guendouzi I agree with Trev. He looks a terrific prospect. The switch to Arsenal especially given the opposition we have played represents a major adjustment and he has taken it in his stride. I saw him give a ball away cheaply yesterday and ten seconds later he had the ball back. I infinitely prefer him to Xhaka already.
The transfer ‘spree ‘ we went on in 2016 which landed us Xhaka, Perez and Mustafi for almost £90 million was an incredible waste of money. We are finding that some of the players we accumulated earn far too much for anyone to take them on , on those terms, and the fees we are likely to get for them are paltry. Ospina is unsellable , we may have to give him a free and pay some of his wages to be rid of him. I wonder what Emery thinks of some of the issues he has to resolve?
There was i thinking Delia was an Optimist.
But judging by her lengthy post above,it seems i couldn’t have been more wrong.
Along with ksn,it would appear that the closer we get to kick off, those of a gloomy disposition are starting to get more than a bit pessimistic about our prospects this coming season.
I am convinced we are in an infinitely better place than last season, and i think we can really challenge for a top 4 spot.
I can easily see Lichsteiner despite his age, usurping Hector at right back, and judging by the early forearm smash he handed out to one of the Lazio players early in the piece on Saturday,a lot of wingers won’t want to go near him.
Shades of Dixon/Lauren if i am not mistaken.
Hector is too nice, hasn’t got the mongrel in him, that you have to have to be a defender.
AMN has speed to burn and will easily cover the left back position, and may well keep it even when Nacho is fit.
Torreira will be a walk up start as defensive midfielder, another one with a ruthless streak that’s been missing since Paddy departed.
We have been far too easily breached through the middle in previous seasons, leaving the central defenders completely exposed, with Torreira patrolling that area,it won’t be happening.
As for the central defensive pairing,Sokratis looks a definite starter, and despite his faults,i would still go with Mustafi as his partner, who i think under Emery’s tutelage, will be given first dibs.
So yes we are moving away from the ” after you Claude ”
mentality, and if that makes opposition players think twice about trying to bully us out of games, then I’m all for it,and if the opposition attackers, get kicked into touch a few times like the good old days, then i am sure that wherever they are watching from,Adams/Keown/Bouldy/Winterburn/Dixon/Campbell/Lauren to name a few, will be nodding their heads in approval.
No football team ever got anywhere by being nice,we are done with nice.
Well said Clive! Totally agree.
But I hear Chambers is going ON LOAN to Fulham tomorrow- another homegrown player. If he’s going can’t we sell him and get some cash?
Cheers ‘H. Thanx Delia. Tar Trev.
Just looked back at your article ‘holic and all the players’names are spelled correctly. What joy for a pedant like me. Nice job to have the power of the airbrush too. 😉
Hmmm, I’ve always thought of myself as an optimist
but actually I agree with almost everything Delia wrote
in her comment.
However, I can’t see any reason for us not to be Top 4
this season
– the Chavs are not improving and will probably
lose their keeper shortly
– the Spuds are overrated, too reliant on Kane and stuck
with debt at a new stadium
– Manure haven’t strengthened defensively, Pogba is unhappy
and Maureen is imploding again
Liverpoo and Shitty are the likely challengers but if we sort out
our away form we have a fighting chance to win it.
I hope all the optimists in this bar are proved right and we finish the season at least in the top four and win the Europa Legue.
The key to finishing in the top four would be our away form, as pointed out by OM above. If Emery can turn around our away form we have a fighting chance of doing well In all the competitions. COYG.
The Chambers story is odd, he signed a new
contract and is sent on loan to Fulham.
He’s already had a season at Boro so why
do it again. We might loan out a CB in
January I suppose but not until Kos is
back I’d have thought.
One explanation could be that the story comes
from The Fail and they just made it up.
According to the bookmakers we are a 2/1 shot to finish in the top four, as they believe that the three Middlesex/ London sides will be fighting it out for fourth. Looks fair value to me.
Any of you with a few million to invest might consider the 1/4 to finish in the top six, surely unthinkable we won’t?
Lucas might be off to West Ham. I’d much rather keep him and shunt Welbeck out though
Any truth to the rumour that we may be signing Vida, the Croatia defender? In the WC he did look nearly all-powerful in the air if not on the ground.
Another story out there is that Welbeck
has been told he can go too.
It’s the great summer sale but it seems
no one wants to leave.
It looks like we are parting with Perez and Welbeck for cash before Thursday . Perez for £4m is a good deal for West Ham IMO. That should raise £20 m in total fees and saves about £6 million next year in salaries. Chambers will generate a loan fee of around £1m and a salary saving of about £3.5 million. Akpom generated £1m and probably saved another million. Ospina ( if he ever leaves ) might reel a bit of this back as we may have to pay the council to take him away and pay most of his salary at another club. Presumably Joel Campbell will go this week too, probably on a free but maybe saving close to £2 million .
This means we might have around £35 million to spend which might get us another CB( hopefully one who can run) .
But here we need Ned. Parting with Welbeck , Wilshere , Akpom and Chambers might compromise our quota of home- grown players?
shkodran, sokratis, rob and domagoj are NOT top CBs
that is the main problem
maybe the only real one with this ArsenaL
but HUGE problem
Yerry Mina of Barcelona would have been a good player for us and at 23 years and 6’5″ he would have been a great presence in our defence and with his aerial qualities would have been effective at both ends in set play situations. He is also reasonably priced at £28.5 m. He had a great World Cup campaign and I would have taken him over Sokratis.
too late for yerry stamina

@Ksn: I hope they are proved right and even when they are not proved right in May, the least you can do now is just welcome this new era with more enthusiasm, optimism and positive vibe. Why so negative even after we have our new head coach? What’s next? Unay Out after the second game? Grab a bottle or two and enjoy the ride. I for one cannot wait.
Agreed with Ambydex. If we can’t be optimistic now then when the hell can we be optimistic? Go ahad Arsenal and win.

TTG@33: Club can have a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players older than 21 in their PL squad of 25, which means at least eight homegrown.
Homegrown means that a player must have been on the books of an FA-affiliated club for at least three years before they turn 21. So Hector is ‘homegrown’.
By my count we have: Martinez, Bellerin, Holding, Chambers, Jenkinson, Ramsey, Iwobi and Welbeck that qualify as homegrown.
So if Welbeck and Jenks are sold and Chambers goes out on loan, we will be three short.
Out choices will then be to buy more homegrowns or name a 22-strong PL squad.
We’ll do the later. Clubs can also use as many under-21 players as they like in addition to their named squad, regardless of nationality.
So Mailtand-Niles, Nketiah, Reiss-Nelson, Willock, ESR, Osei-Tutu, Bramall and Mavididi can all be used in the PL although they are too young yet to qualify as homegrown.
So, too, can Maprovanos as he is under-21.
In short, we are fine.
Kroenke has done the deal with Usmanov to buy him out.
Stock exchange announcement:
https://www.nexexchange.com/announcements?newsid=4098237
Kroenke is making an offer to buy all shares he does not own. Usmanov’s stake gives him 91.3% of the shares, over the 90% trigger that will let him take the club private.
From the announcement:
The successful implementation of the Offer will result in the opening of a new chapter in the history of the Club in bringing 100 per cent. private ownership by KSE. KSE believes moving to private ownership will bring the benefits of a single owner better able to move quickly in furtherance of the Club’s strategy and ambitions. KSE is a committed, long-term owner of the Club.
Historic day. But for better or worse?
We were all but privately owned anyway, as he had all the power, but this is still a dark day IMO
If Kroenke is prepared to invest the funds required to pay for top talent to come to the Club, and make us truly competitive with the likes of City, and give us the chance to compete for the Trophies that really matter, then i am all for it.
I guess we will only really find out next summer.
We are an iconic Football club that has been underachieving for years, time to start making us competitive again at the top table.
Over to you Stan, here’s hoping you really are The Man.
I am cautiously optimistic about this squad’s prospects on the pitch but I do find the news of the likely impending 100% ownership of this historic club by Silent Stan somewhat unsettling. It’s certainly the start of a new era.
On the face of it buying out an Uzbek oligarch of dubious origins would not seem to be a bad thing but Kroenke is not the owner of choice for Arsenal as far as I am concerned. We should always be owned by someone who supports the club…not the club’s profit potential. It’s a black day in my view.
Ned,
Many thanks, but presumably we are limited in terms of any non- homegrown players we buy before Thursday?
All the excitement for the new season (from my point of view) has suddenly been overshadowed by this latest development.
One can only hope there’s some form of positive outcome from the eventual sole ownership.
I’m really clutching at straws here, to be honest!
Thank fuck that vile, dodgy gangster gas sold his shares. All the chat about how dreadful Stan has taken full control is hysterical nonsense.
The AST are as self serving as any oligarch. Always whining too.
I’ve never been a fan of Stan, but in a toss up between him and the Uzbek I know who I’d choose.
With Wenger gone, there’s no way another manager will put up with a lack of adequate investment. The statement gushes about wanting to challenge for titles, let’s see them put their (loaned) money where their mouths are.
Very fair points @52, Dexter.
Thing is though, as a privately owned club there won’t be any scrutiny of the finances and he can do as he wants with the money the club generates.
If he wants to keep it and not invest it, he can. If he wants to spend it on whores and coke, he can. If he wants to burn it all, he can. If he wants to use it to invest in his other sporting interests, which is most likely IMO, he can.
And if he wants a half empty stadium every fortnight by checking out how willing the ST holders are to continue to pay over the odds to watch a disinvested squad toil in mid-table then he only needs to divert resources to his other interests.
He has no further legal requirement for shareholder meetings and financial transparency but it will be very obvious (as it is at Newcastle under the very same conditions) when money generated by the football side of the company is not being invested in the team or debt is being put on the club (as at Manure).
Dexter,
In my first post on this board I raised the point that some fans were suggesting that Usmanov might be a preferable option to Kroenke who was an owner of mediocre sporting franchises and a wearer of dubious toupees. I had my head immediately bitten off by an occasional poster on here and he received a lot of support. They were naive in the extreme.
Neither man is what I would ideally like as the owner of our club. I’d ideally like a multi-billionaire Bob Wilson or Goonerholic!
Usmanov at least was an Arsenal fan. Kroenke is the owner of a very rich playpen and we are one of the toys he is occasionally inclined to pick up.
This is awful news because the most basic accountability of the ownership to the fan base has disappeared and Kroenke now has freedom to do what he likes financially. I think this is why Ivan has decided to jump ship and I can’t blame him.
Nobody can expect a man like Kroenke to spend his own money to compete with those with bottomless pockets . Our best hope would be ownership by someone who had a lot of money and decided to use a big chunk of it to make Arsenal Football Club the best it can be. Kroenke has naff-all interest in that. It’s an investment to him not a treasured possession. A very sad day but one many of us on here anticipated for a long time.
Beware American moguls with silly hairstyles. They are taking over the world.
TTG@50: Of the first-teamers listed on the club site, we have one over our full quota of 17 non-homegrowns. The three most likely players to be moved on to get us to or below quota are Joel Campbell, Lucas Perez and David Ospina.
Kroenke, Usmanov; rock, hard place. Rock is marginally preferable.
Thanks Ned
Ah! Campbell, Perez and Ospina…the Unholy Trinity worth about Two bob…if we pay their salaries to the buying club. You lost your mojo in the market Arsene
Taking the club private would explain why Gazidis is off now to somewhere he is being offered equity.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LZxelSc62Y
goodbye CC
You lost your mojo in the market Arsene
Some would say he never had it anyway. For every success there were many, many failures. Think of all the rubbish centre backs we’ve picked up over the years, as a starter.
A view on KSE gaining control. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
