Up To Fifth – Seven On The Bounce For Lucky Gunners
Sep 29th, 2018 by 'holic
The Arsenal went into their match with Watford minus Sokratis who was presumably still feeling the effects of last week’s injury. Once again we started slowly and Petr Cech was put under pressure twice in only the third minute from first a corner, then a long throw-in.
Alexandre Lacazette had our first shot having been set-up by Aaron Ramsey but it was off target and Watford continued to press in the following minutes. Lacazette was forced to drop deeper and deeper to try and get possession of the ball. He committed a foul which resulted in a hopeful Capoue effort to catch Cech out but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
In the fifteenth minute Lacazette dispossessed Cathcart but his attempted dink over Foster missed the target again. Watford responded with a Deeney cut-back for Hughes but referee, Anthony Taylor, spotted an obvious foul by Gray.
We came more into the match around the middle of the half and Lacazette was within inches of a header into the box from Nacho Monreal. Deeney’s wild lunge into Monreal and Skhodran Mustafi rightly earned a yellow card, the first of the contest. Ten minutes before halftime he was denied by a brave Cech who had been flattened at a free-kick but still managed to grab the ball in a sea of legs.
Back came the Arsenal and Granit Xhaka’s fierce drive drew a decent diving save out of Foster. Watford were rotationally fouling in order to break up what little tempo we had. Torreira clattered into Deeney as his frustration grew and he picked up the second yellow card of the match.
The half ended badly when Cech collapsed with a hamstring injury after taking a long goal-kick. On came Bernd Leno, afforded an unexpected opportunity to make the goalkeeping position his own. At the start of the second-half he chipped his first clearance straight into touch. Nerves, possibly?
Xhaka’s corner was met by a combination of Mustafi and Rob Holding but the ball ended up in the North Bank. At the other end Leno produced an outstanding save to deny Deeney. As Watford put the pressure back again Torreira sent Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang free down the inside right channel and his cross was head wide of the target by Lacazette.
Mustafi was the third recipient of a yellow card for dissent despite not being the first person on either side to have visibly questioned a decision by the hapless officials. Alex Iwobi was sent on for Aaron Ramsey, largely invisible on the day, and noticeably not greeted back by Unai Emery. Doubtless that will prompt more negativity on social media later.
We were once again indebted to Leno for a save when Deeney sent Gray scampering through on goal. With twenty minutes remaining we were still under the cosh, all credit to Watford. They sent on Success for the rapidly tiring Gray and the substitute immediately had a shot blocked by Holding. From a free-kick needlessly conceded by Mustafi, a recurring theme, Leno had to show bravery to grab the ball as boots flew in around him.
Success was put through behind Holding but as with Lacazette before him he chipped it wide of the target. In an attempt to change things Emery sent on Danny Welbeck for Aubameyang. Deeney left a leg in on Torreira but the referee adjudged it not to be a foul and a second yellow card. Dacoure also fouled the Uruguayan moments later and was carded for his show of dissent.
From nowhere we took the lead against the run of play with nine minutes remaining. Hector Bellerin picked out Iwobi on the right flank and his cross was met at the near post by a combination of Lacazette and Cathcart, one of whom turned the ball beyond Foster. It was credited to the Watford defender.
The Arsenal 1-0 Watford
Astonishingly we were two ahead two minutes later when Lacazette turned provider with a cross that Ozil just passed into the back of the net. Cue “Deeney, Deeney, what’s the score?” from a relieved home support.
The Arsenal 2-0 Watford
It is said that the sign of a good side is one that can dig out victories when they are not playing well. On that basis today we are real title contenders (removes tongue from cheek). The Arsenal played keep ball in the added minutes to close out a victory that was tough to envisage a quarter of an hour earlier. We’re up a place to fifth in the Premier League.

That was fast even by your standards, Holic. Just the match we saw. Thanks.
Scores
Now that was quick, ‘Holic. Are the players even down the tunnel yet?
Leno was quite good, Iwobi sparked the change, happy with Holding, Laca never stops trying
Fun fact: apart from Everton winning 3:0, all PM matches ended with a 2:0 winner
Have to feel sorry for Laca. Worked his socks off as usual but he couldn’t have bought a goal today.
As you imply, ‘Holic, the scoreline flatters to deceive. But a clean sheet and three points none the less. And though it was hard work, I don’t think anyone but a Watford fan could argue that they deserved to win.
You rightly note the body language around the Ramsey substitution. Even when he was walking across the pitch, it almost looked as if he felt he was walking off for the last time.
Nice one H. Great report.
Mustafi is a liability. I thought Holding was excellent. Very calm and composed and bailed out his partner a couple of times. Iwobi made a big difference with his fresh legs. Great block/tackle by Danny for the second. Laca’s first touch to Iwobi showed great awareness, then he spun into the space in textbook fashion. Iwobi found him and he played a great ball in. Ozil’s run and finish were absolute class. That is a cracking goal.
Plenty to work on still but the results keep coming and that can only be a good thing. Hopefully we get the rub of the green in one of the next few games and knock four or five in. That would do us the world of good.
This is way too quick.
Leno was good.
Laca is a fighter. Should have get the goals in the first half though.
Holding was great. Calm AF
Mustafi Meh.
Ozil looks lazy. The only good display from him in this match was the goal.
A win is a win is a win!! Up the Arse!
But the free yet again doing their best to put the kybosh on us winning!!
The ref*
Lighting quick there Guvnor.
As you say things weren’t looking
good with 15 minutes to go but I
hadn’t realised we were cunningly
lulling them into thinking we’d never
score.
Another clean sheet, 3 more points
and mustafi sized cracks papered
over for another week.
Wow! That’s rapid Holic. I’ve just reached St. Pancras and the train where most Gooners seem to have seen the game you did.Watford played well. They often cause us trouble because of their physicality and pace and we were indebted to Rob Holding today.
Auba wasn’t happy today, neither was Ramsey, Xhaka is far too slow to play in a game as frantic as that .
Leno made a couple of good saves but made a Horlicks of one cross but it was a decent intro for him. I think Cech may be absent for some time as it looked a nasty injury.
Two things to credit Emery with are effective substitutions and I also think he has made Iwobi a much more hungry and effective player. He made a real difference today and I would retain him instead of Ramsey. With Guendouzi and Iwobi joining Torreira we might not get overrun on midfield quite so much
Holding had an excellent game, and I thought he played well against Brentford mid-week. Could he play alongside Sokratis, or are they both left-sided centre backs (as is Kos, come to that), thus an either/or?
Iwobi looked lively when he came on, and that made a difference. He looks far more like the player he was when he broke through not the lethargic one he became last season. I wonder if Emery has inspired him or just given him a kick up the backside.
Also credit to Bellerin today for not letting his wingers cut inside. He was always pushing them to the outside, so I assume that is Emery’s coaching.

You make some very good points as ever . Bellerin has so little help on the right side and Auba doesn’t help Nacho much. Torreira shields the defence but Xhaka ( who you might have guessed I’d dig out ) is very weak defensively and puts his defence under pressure by some very poor distribution. When he is further forward Xhaka plays some great passes under less pressure to spread play but I wouldn’t push him further forward because he slows the play up. Even his long passes take forever to get there. I don’t see us moving forward until we leave Xhaka out.
As for Holding I think Sokratis is right-footed and could play on the right side. Having thought about the game I think we are seeing the emergence of a young, very fit side who can play the strong press that you need to impose in the Premier League now. I think Iwobi is rising to the occasion and my suspicion is that Emery has concluded that Ramsey’s game doesn’t fit the pattern he wants to play. He trooped off very dejectedly.
At Fulham next week our team might be affected by who plays in Azerbaijan but I hope we can get more pace into midfield and give our full-backs some protection. That is the direction I hope we are heading in and I suspect young Emile’s emergence has affected Ramsey’s position at the club too.
Looking at Quarabag we might see
Martinez
Lich Mustafi Holding Kolasinac
Guendouzi Elneny

Oh Teddy Teddy!
You went to Man United but you’re still a c**t!
Today was the turn of Troy Deeney. Famous for his cojones quote last year, he certainly added to the gaiety of the nation on a glorious autumnal afternoon. We carried out a continual conversation with him, which he definitely heard and noticed and reacted to. Some greatest hits of the afternoon, none subtle, but all hugely enjoyed included
You fat bastard

A song which Patrice Evra made his own featured
Deeney Denney you’re a c**t
You’re a c**t

And of course, when we went ahead
Deeney Deeney what’s the score
What’s the score?
All good fun!
On the positive front, Lacazette was visibly delighted when we sang his name, applauding and thumbs up. Everyone loves to be loved. He, as always, worked his little French socks off all afternoon.
On the game H saw the same game that I did. I thought Rob Holding was outstanding and my MOM. I also thought Ozil played very well and noticeably better when Rambo went off. Those two really can’t be played in the same team – they get in each other’s way. Iwobi looked good, as always lately, when he came on.
Everyone around me thought Watford played well. Forster was terrific throughout. I couldn’t have argued against a draw being a fair result but it was great to nick it in the last ten. Everyone in the ground is in a great mood now. It’s fun to go to games again.

As usual, I wasn’t at the match and, also as usual, read the comments with interest. It’s particularly good to hear that “it’s fun to go to games again”.
I did, however, listen to the 5Live phone-in this evening, and what an error that was. While it’s undoubtedly a relief not to hear callers ringing in to discuss the manager’s position at Arsenal, I found it almost equally tedious to hear the host – not Savage, but some other geezer who runs him close for tedious, errr, c***ishness – asking supporters of any team in the bottom half of the table whether they think it’s time their manager moved on. It got so bad that even Savage gave him an earful.
Moving swiftly on to the situation at Manchester Rowdies, I do hope that the odious Portuguee is allowed to see out his contract. I could come up with some bullshit about how important it is to support the manager over the dressing room, but basically I just want the world to have to opportunity to see what happens when The Specious One has to deal with a group of players for a prolonged time. The thought that the Glazers will have to fill his pockets while it’s happening just makes the whole scenario even sweeter. Of course, if He wants to buy himself out of his contract…
Well, I feel better for getting all that off my chest. Meanwhile, back in this Goonerverse, Five league wins in a row, what’s not to like?

Great report. Very much the match I saw, Guvna. A pleasure to share the afternoon’s entertainment with Trev.
I haven’t read any of the drinks yet so apologies if I reiterate observations already made.
I thought we looked much more assured today when ‘pissing around with the ball at the back’/playing out from the back until Watford had a good 10 minute spell before we scored and we looked possibly to have pressed the suicide button. Before and after that sticky period we actually had spells of looking quite slick with the ball going forward.
Bonus marks for Leno (despite the punt for touch), Bellerin (great going forward, needs to get some help defending), Monreal (worked his socks off), Holding (imperious performance – a great prospect and future captain), Torreira (we’ve waited for him for a decade), Lacazette (what a work rate – deserved a goal, should have had 3), Özil (worked hard all game, finally became influential after Iwobi joined the fray but needs to man up for 50:50 balls) and Iwobi (made such a difference to the balance up front, worked hard – deserves to start).
Two minutes before we scored (I’m giving it to Lacazette because he deserved it) I turned to Trev and to console him on having to watch a 0-0 for his first match of the season but observed that at that moment it looked highly possible that we wouldn’t even achieve that. We had three warnings from Watford but our first goal changed the game.
What a lovely piece of footwork from Mesut for the clincher.
Deferred gratification is so sweet!

Pointless reply really but just wanted to

TTG’s team for Qarabag looks spot on
to me but….. haven’t we got any young
CB’s worth a debut at all?
Qarabag aren’t a bad side based on some
of their results in Europe over the last
few years and it’ll be tricky but even if
we lose it doesn’t really matter in the
group stages.
And it’s time to bench Rambo, I can’t
see any point in pushing Ozil wide and
persisting with Rambo at No 10 if he’s
off anyway
Oh yeah , good point bt8. We can’t
play Mkhi as he’s not welcome in
old Baku town. Perhaps a start for
Eddie then and push Danny wide.
We host Blackpool in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Hope the result is the same as the
last time we played Blackpool at
home 🙂
1. Can someone point me to the Rosetta Stone needed to decipher CBAs riddles.
2. Watched the game from China (Luoyang – 3rd tier town of six million..) last night. Really liked our resilience under pressure. Holding, Lucas, Iwobi, Leno (commentators called him Jay..), all very encouraging.
COYG!!!
There’s a Rosetta Stone?
Who knew?
cba on cracking form.
Pijiu@82: there is no Rosetta Stone, Enigma machine or any other device that can make sense of cba. If there was, the world would end as there would be nothing left to know.
OM@79: Do we know yet if Mkhitaryan can/will travel to Baku for the Qarabag game, either because Azerbaijan won’t issue him with a visa or he will feel too much at risk for his safety? In 2015, he stayed in Germany when Dortmund played Gabala because of concerns about his security.
As Qarabag is originally a Nagorno-Karabakh team and considers itself ‘in exile’ in Baku, the club is draped in extra political significance over and above the Azerbaijan/Armenia hostility. Mkhi will get a torrid time if he does go. The same questions will arise if we get the final of the Ropey League as that will be played in Baku.
OM@81: Theo got a hat-trick in that game. Marouane Chamakh (who? the crowd chants) also scored.
Abou Diaby also scored and got an assist. The Blackpool game was the second in what would be a run of four successive league games before injury sidelined him again. His injuries meant he would never manage a longer run of games before leaving the club in 2015. Back of the envelope calculation comes up with him playing 180 games for us and missing 296. Truly a great talent lost to the club and the game.
Ned,
I read somewhere that it might be
possible to get some kind of
exemption visa for Mkhi.
To me it makes no sense to
do that for this game. But I’ve
no idea how Mkhi himself feels
about the situation, which is I
suppose the first step in any
decision.
Happy memories of Theo and even
Chamakh from your other post ?
A tip of the hat to the monks for
the Diaby data – it’s nice he had
some good days to remember as
well.
Just looked that Blackpool game up
Ned. I’d forgotten they only had
10 men after giving away a first
half penalty – for a foul just outside
the box – and we cruised home.
Jack was the last survivor of that
team when he left this summer.
Arshavin got the other goal and
Rosicky was playing too – must have
been the height of the small,
skillful midfielder era. I imagine
Abou’s height came in handy.
Fabregas and Van Persie came on
as subs. After the game AW said
“we’re looking closely at signing a
new defender before the window
shuts” 🙂
Iwobi over Ramsey on current form.
Mkhi travel/not travel – I don’t care. Silky skills but mostly completely ineffective. United got the better deal.
He couldn’t score because the only place Success comes before work is in the dictionary. I’ll get my coat.
UTA.
Hi Noosa
United got the better deal? Really?
Sanchez can’t even get into the squad at United. Mkhi making a difference when he plays – look at his contribution to goal vs Everton.
Went to yesterday’s game with a sense of dread, Maybe that was due to tiredness after the exertions of walking from and to King’s X on Weds night or was it that Watford deserved to be considered a real threat.
So it didn’t surprise me when I said to Paul who sits next to me in my new perch in 132, with 15mins to go ,that there was only one team going to win the game and it wasn’t Arsenal and he agreed with me.
Then Iwobi joined the fray , our energy levels suddenly increased and we looked a different team. A pity Emery hadn’t made the change earlier it would have made a more enjoyable watch. Iwobi and Holding are the men of the moment having both come on under the new regime and hopefully will start at Fulham where I am going next Sunday for the very first time!
Rambo seemed to have other things on his mind and wasn’t at the races and Auba was never in the game.
Am getting distracted by the Le Golf.
COYR
Hi Delia
Have a great time at The Cottage. Best away game going. Sadly I couldn’t blag a ticket this year. Hopefully you are walking to the ground from Putney Bridge, through Bishops’ Park, along the banks of the Thames. Enjoy.
C100 @ 90
Funnily enough I nearly made the Everton contribution the exception to the rule but two or three moments are sadly not enough from his minutes thus far imo.
The fact that Sanchez may be out of favour at Utd to me speaks more about the manager and his travails/foibles than the player. Would you seriously rather have Mkhi in your squad than Sanchez?
I wouldn’t.
A revitalised Iwobi potentially offers me more than either but I’m interested to see where that may lead.
UTA.
Hi Noosa
Having watched Sanchez at Arsenal last season, when his malaise started, yes I would take Mkhi every time.
Howdy CBA@60,
I’ve been racing up in Newmarket for the past few days, and haven’t tried the Black yet. Have had some wonderful scoops here of Three Blind Mice Brewery’s “Juice Rocket” and “Lord Glucan IPA”, and have been feeling no pain at all. It helped having my dough on the big race winner yesterday at 16/1!
Man U should get around £75 million if they sell Sanchez, 20% down from his peak valuation but still £15 million-20 million more than when he left us. Mkhitaryan would be in the £20 million-30 million range if we sold him tomorrow. Which you would rather have in your squad, and which club got the better end of the AS for HM deal are different questions.
Delia, enjoy Craven Cottage. Lovely ground. I saw George Best destroy Fulham there more years ago than I care to remember. That was when Saturday afternoons looked like this: https://youtu.be/7u1VsLOgKo0
Well done the Ryder Cup team! Brilliant stuff!
Lays off an innocuous short ball to the player nobody expected to be covering so much ground in so short a time, whose name is …
Wanders into the penalty area looking to sort out cba and finds a ball sitting on the penalty spot, flicks it up, right thigh, left thigh, left foot, right foot, head, right shoulder, left shoulder, chests it to……

Real life dictated that I hadvto listen to the game on something called BBC 5 Live Sports Extra. Pleased to report that all those Deeney chants were very audible on my radiogram.
Cracked me up…
Well in for the ton, NDR. One of the longest build ups in history. ?

My parents had a radiogram. Proper sturdy piece of furniture it was. As well as the tuner, speakers, turntable and room for a few records, it also contained a small drinks cabinet which my Dad used to house his collection of miniatures.

Re Sanchez/ Mkhi I was dining with some Mancs this week and they are hugely disappointed with Sanchez and while they didn’t feel Mkhi showed his best form consistently they feel we got the best of the deal.
Ned,
In reality I can’t see any team paying £75 m for Sanchez on the evidence of his form over the last year. It might have something to do with Mourinho but I think it is a combination of him having played almost continuously for several years and a growing arrogance that we saw at our place. The Mancs were saying they have never had a player who gives the ball away so much but they can’t fault his work rate . That was exactly the same in his last year at Arsenal.
Some silly blogs are recycling this rumour that we are interested in bringing him back. Garbage- his salary would be Auba and Lacazette’s put together and then some . On top of that I don’t think he would fit in I’m off to the Cottage too. A lovely place to see football and I’ve seen us win there a few times.
C100@104: So I am told. The Guv’nor is obviously going soft in his old age and not carding anybody at the door. If they can’t show their pension book…
TTG@105: I feel we are seeing the same with Mkhi. I suspect he is a player who needs to be playing regularly to find his best role and form.
Someone will pay that sort of money, or near enough for Sanchez. He has got three good seasons left in him if anyone can work out how to man manage him and fit him into a system. He still has that precious skill of being able to score out of nothing. In many ways, he should be an ideal ManU player. That he is not may indeed be something to do with Mourinho as you suggest. We would be mad to take him back, as you also suggest.
I hope you add another win at the Cottage to your tally.
Caught on the hop as i wasn’t expecting an early report from the Landlord.
Obviously missed the email saying he wasn’t going.!!
So watched the Golf instead of checking the Bar.
All of the above drinks, apart from cba who marches to the beat of his own unique drum, have summed up the game pretty well.
Well done Dorset,16/1 winner buys a few pints, and pays the dish licker’s bills. !!
Hope your health is still in positive territory.
As for Craven Cottage, like many old timers in the bar,one of my favorite grounds, and had the privilege of being taken by my Dad to see Johnny Haynes play there in his pomp, running the show for Fulham back in the day.
A true one club man,and a classy footballer, playing near on 600 games for the Cottagers.
Clive@107,
Health still not too bad for the time being, thanks. The “dishlicker” managed to win the fifth at Poole this evening to reach A1 grade, and we hope to have some fun with him now.
I went to my first game at Craven Cottage in 1966, but unfortunately we lost if memory serves. Great ground, though.
Watched the golf eariler “in company”, as the saying goes and ths bloke I barely know is giving his opinion, which included, “The thing with golfers is they always have fantastic manners, win or lose. They’re such role models”
A few minutes later Patrick Reed did his shush thing and the same bloke, with perfect timing, goes “Who’s that classless cunt?”
I chuckled into my cider.
1-0 on New Year’s Day. Graham Leggat goal, Dorest Mick. Good to hear you are holding up.
102 – that actually sounds cool – especially the drinks cabinet bit – If you still have it then stick it on ebay with the word ‘vintage’ in the description – sure a bearded hipster will give you a coupla hundred smackers for it…
Answering to whether Mhki can play midweek or not, believe we are traveling without him to the game.
Watford gave a proper game and the physicality and the hustle was fairly uncomfortable for everyone on the pitch representing us. Even Torreira looked ruffled and early days still, but he does look off pace quite a bit. It feels like he thinks he has time to look up and pick a pass but he doesnt most times.
Holding excellent and Mustafi comical as always. Xhaka is the best long-range passer we have but boy his short passes causes a heartache time to time. Auba hardly did anything and laca should have finished better than he did. Ramsey looks disinterested and Mesut needs to try a bit more than just play the safe pass at times.
Overall winning is a habit and the longer it continues, the better it is for us. Craven cottage will test it for certain.
Read on twitter that some people are feeling bad seeing united crumble, blimey why would you feel so?? I just cant be happier than see those sick retards cry and blame one another, let that shit club be destroyed and take everyone down.

You can be sad about the situation regarding the actual club without having any regard for the current (or even past) incumbents of that place.
It’s the most famous, biggest, football club in Britian and always will be. Seeing it in this state is sad in that context, but I still take joy in them not winning stuff. 🙂

“Mustafi comical as always”
Vinay, I suppose I could try laughing if all the crying didn’t get in the way. ?
Name a bigger one then. I’ll wait for your reply and then refer you to your own 114

Another gutsy win for Freddie’s under 23’s away at Leicester this evening.
A 2-1 win without Willock/Nketiah and ESR.
Takes us to the top of the table.
Things are looking up at every level including the Ladies who are unbeaten so far this season.
No cards in my pocket right now Ned. ?

I’ve just caught up with this and am delighted to see a very young side do so well. Having seen this group once , apart from ESR, the other lad who really impressed me was Robbie Burton who was a tough but classy holding or central midfielder. He obviously did well tonight. As Eddie, Joe Willock and ESR did not play tonight I think we can expect them to be earning some air miles in Azerbaijan on Thursday

Agree with those sentiments.
With an early kick off on Sunday, i cannot see too many who play on Thursday night, lining up against Fulham.
I rest my case, ‘Holic. 🙂
Watford, Bournemouth, Leicester and Wolves. Just a few of the clubs outperforming Man United at the moment.
Even Arsenal.
Mourinho has had it.
Seems Mkhi chose not to travel to Baku,
which I can’t blame him for.
Cynic – you can have the first two @113
but not “always will be”. It clashes with my
Arsenal World Domination timeline.
One thing which struck me on Saturday and would certainly have struck Bath and Trev if they looked through the programme was a picture of Ted Drake being carried off the pitch over the shoulder of Tom Whittaker, the trainer, after being knocked out against Brentford. Compared to the ( very necessary) precautions taken with head injuries nowadays it gave me a shudder and made me realise how primitive football and training and medical facilities were in those days. Ted is later pictured in bed sitting up drinking his tea ( probably with fearful concussion). Fortunately I’m not aware of Ted suffering any serious long-term ill-effects from his various bangs and collisions over the years. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times. He was a real gentleman though much smaller than I had imagined. He loved our club very much
If bringing Mkhitaryan is too politically sensitive then we ought to bring Kolasinac. Aside from being physically imposing we can probably pass him off as being a citizen of a couple of dozen countries.
I won’t miss the Ropey League
when it’s gone. Or the CL come
to that – the group stages are
staler than a very stale thing.
I’m looking forward to UEFA
coming up with newer even
worse competitions.
Perhaps we can call the new one
The Morose Jaded Supporter Cup
On the other hand I’m looking
forward to the Fulham game at
the weekend – they play some
football and it could be a
cracking game.
Apologies for my atrocious English construction two drinks above. I meant to say Kola is physically imosing, not “we” as written.
Loris is still clearly pissed !
