Gunners Take A Strong Squad To Qarabag
Oct 3rd, 2018 by 'holic
“Last year here, Atletico Madrid, there were two matches against them. They could not win. It’s for me, two very good examples for us to have the respect for them.”
Unai Emery making sure that we do not underestimate Qarabag FK ahead of our second Europa League group stage match (courtesy of arsenal.com). A strong squad has made the long journey to Baku although there are some absentees. Aside from the existing injured players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (ill), Aaron Ramsey (expectant father of twins), and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Armenian/Azerbaijan conflict) have not boarded the plane.
Bernd Leno is likely to get the nod over Emi Martinez in goal. Stephan Lichsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos could return to the defence possibly alongside Rob Holding and Nacho Monreal. In front of them it is perm any two from Lucas Torreira, Mohamed Elneny, Granit Xhaka, and Matteo Guendouzi. Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck could play either side of Mesut Ozil or Emile Smith-Rowe. Alexandre Lacazette is likely to be the man up top.
Those two Champions League draws against Atleti last season were their standout results in the tournament. Chelsea were in the same group and beat them 6-0 and 4-0. They also played Tottenham in this competition in 2015 losing 0-1 at home and 1-3 away.
The ‘holic pound
At their best they could be a handful but it would be a disappointment if we didn’t get the points. I’ve taken 13/2 against a 0-2 win for The Arsenal. That would put us in good shape ahead of the home and away meetings with Sporting Lisbon who are likely to be our toughest opponents in the group.
A reminder that the kick-off is 5.55 pm UK time. Don’t tune in at 8.00 pm and wonder why you can’t find us on anywhere.
Have a good one, ‘holics.

It is worth noting that as I write the Totts are getting a new arsehole carved out for them . Hopefully we won’t suffer the same fate tomorrow. Emery is taking this competition very seriously and I hope we are not too knackered before we play Fulham . It’s a long way to go but I think a 2-0 is within our reach . I didn’t like the comments of the Quarabag manager towards Mkhitaryan
The FKin’ manager is a cunt. Not to mention cba.
well don’t then
I have been watching West Brom and now switched to Spuds. The Wembley pitch is in a terrible state considering it has a load of shit on it every week.
I’m getting very boring about this but two more examples tonight of a sweeper keeper ( Lloris) cocking up by rushing off his line or trying to play out from the back. It’s utter bollocks and so unnecessary
Fine preview Guvna. I knew nothing of Quarabag except that they had played the neighbours in this competition a couple of years ago before the had become the all conquering legendary team that we see today (oops – well maybe ‘arry won’t beat Methi’s wecord afta all).
Won’t see the match until I return from my class at 11pm. Fingers crossed we can put the Azerbaijanis to the sword. Do it for Mkhy!
Have to say I thoroughly enjoyed that game at Wembley.
Took me back to 2011 and us beating a much better Barca team.
Arshavin!
Still my favourite game at the Emirates.
So what chances of us, Chelsea, United, Spurs and Liverpool all being in the quarterfinal of the Europa?

Thanks for the preview Guvnor.
2-0 will do fine for me.
Personally, I hope Emi will start
in goal, Lich and Kola as FBs,
Mus & Papa in the centre.
A midfield of Guendouzi & Elneny
with Emile in front of them and
Iwobi, Danny and Eddie up front.
But i think the Guvnor’s forecast team
more likely given UE’s choices so far.
I can’t see the point of startinf Leno
and Nacho or Laca come to that.
Anyway, let’s win and get back healthy,
then stuff Fulham.
Think we are going to find this a tough fixture in more ways than one. Firstly, I fully expect the pitch to be average to poor, second, they will hustle us and we did look harried when it was used against us by many teams latest being watford, other factors like who plays and who does not will influence the result.
Unai will definitely look to win this with a strong team so expect Ozil, Auba, and Danny to start. Torreira will get a run in again and Lichsteiner and Kola to start too. A win tonight and we will carry the momentum onto sunday.
Messi magical spurs tragical and add in that pool lost, it worked well yesterday. Could we end up having spurs coming to europa afterall???
I heard TTG say he heard a rumour about Banega in Jan. Now there is no contract offer for Rambo. Are the two things connected?
I really like Ramsey but I don’t think he has hit the heights of his potential. He could have been as effective as Lampard but he only really had one season when he put it together. I’ll wish him all the best when he goes but he doesn’t fit in a team with Ozil in it, indeed he often cramps Ozil’s style. I would have loved to have sold him for a good bit of money though.
Two cup winning goals and a proper professional. But time to move on it seems.
I think we will win comfortably tonight (against a team whose name is unfortunately like carrier bag).
Even if we have to wait to get the goals in the last twenty minutes, we will be a lot fitter than them. I’d like to see Eddie get at least 30 mins. ESR too.

COME ON YOU REDS
Arsenal: Leno, Holding, Papastathopoulos, Monreal, Lichtsteiner, Elneny, Guendouzi, Kolasinac, Smith-Rowe, Welbeck, Iwobi.
Subs: Martinez, Bellerin, Lacazette, Ozil, Torreira, Mustafi, Xhaka.
Thought Monreal would be rested and Kolasinac would come in for him but the Manager has decided to field both of them. Strong team and a stronger bench.
Three at the back tonight. Didn’t see that coming
Come OoooN!
Great start. Sokratis nudges it over from a corner and off Monreal. 0-1.
PAPA!
I heard TTG say he heard a rumour about Banega in Jan. Now there is no contract offer for Rambo. Are the two things connected?
Won’t he be tied up with Star Wars films for the forseeable?
Sorry, that’s really poor…
Not as poor as red shorts, but still poor.
Oh, we appear to have scored (joined late)
The home team are playing well and putting a lot of pressure on our defence. Won’t be as easy as it looked in the first few minutes.
Almost level but for a great save by Leno.
Second good save by Leno who has kept us from going behind.
Half time 0-1. They have created so many chances but have failed to convert. Sorry to say but their passing and movement looks a lot better than ours and they are quicker to every 50:50 ball. Need to improve a lot in the second half if we are to come away with three points.
We started well, scored early but the home side have played their way into the game and look sharp with plenty of pace on the flanks and have had the chances to be ahead. Two shots into the side netting and two splendid saves by Leno have kept our lead intact.
Welbeck needs to get into the game and their number 17 needs careful marking, he’s very skillful. It’s been an entertaining encounter, looking forward to an interesting second half.
COYR
smith!
ESR gets his first goal. Arsenal lead by two but it doesn’t tell the whole story. They have run us ragged at times and we are lucky to still keep a clean sheet.
0-3. Get in Guendouzi. Nice team counter attack and well taken goal.
YEAH!
Arsenal get a third- and Stewart Robson is audibly gutted. That retching sound is Glenn Hoddle throwing up in the studio.
That’s eight on the bounce lads.
Third great save by Leno. Good replacement for Cech. My man of the match.
Mission accomplished. Now for Fulham.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Good enough in the end.
Onwards to Craven Cottage.
