Ozilliant Gunners Blow Leicester Away – Eventually
Oct 22nd, 2018 by 'holic
There were surprises when the team was announced an hour before kick-off. Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac were ruled out as a precaution as they had reported tight hamstrings. Stephan Lichsteiner was drafted to fill in at left-back, and young Zech Medley was promoted to the bench as defensive cover. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi were preferred to Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Alan Smith derby is coming up, said the commentator. He could have mentioned Geordie Armstrong, Jon Sammels, Eddie Kelly, or (whisper it) Jeff Blockley. In the second minute Iheanacho made the first break and but for a deflection off Lichsteiner we could have been behind early on. The former Manchester City player brought a full length save out of Bernd Leno in the sixth minute.
Before ten minutes were up Leno had to be quick out of his goal to deny Vardy a chance. This was another slow start by the hosts. It is something that really does need resolving. Our first attempt arrived in the twelfth minute but Hector Bellerin’s thumping drive struck Alexandre Lacazette and was cleared. The other full-back, Liechsteiner, followed suit but cleared the crossbar comfortably.
Xhaka’s pull on Maddison gave the Leicester youngster a chance from the free-kick but he too fired it high. Xhaka avoided a booking for that pull back, but Rob Holding was shown one for exactly the same offence moments later. The same player then clearly handled the ball in the box when a game of head tennis developed. Luckily for him the referee somehow missed it.
In the twentieth minute Maguire, of all people, found himself unmarked at the far post and forced Leno into another excellent full length parry from the header. Skhodran Mustafi attempted to respond but after his burst through the inside-right channel his tame finish didn’t stretch Schmeichel. Leicester were largely looking ominously in control of the first-half.
At last Lacazette brought the home support to their feet with a rasping drive from outside the box that flew just wide of the far post. It was a rare prompt to voice however. Athletic and ambitious, Leicester were doing everything but score the goal their early dominance deserved. Until the thirty-first minute when Maguire showed the greater desire to deny Mesut Ozil, the ball was transferred to the charging left-back Chilwell, and his side footed attempted cross deflected off Bellerin and beyond the already-committed Leno.
The Arsenal 0-1 Leicester City
Ndidi’s foul on Lacazette gave Xhaka the opportunity to draw a tip-over save from Schmeichel as we attempted to get back on terms. The Swiss then was the next to see yellow for a late challenge on Maddison. The crowd were up again after an Iwobi nutmeg and a brief spell of pressure. Our careless passing as we attempted to raise the tempo brought a series of groans from the increasingly frustrated faithful.
When Maddison fouled Lucas Torreira the crowd bayed for the yellow card that was being freely issued to home players but to no avail. Another free-kick for Xhaka, but this time he missed the goal. A flowing move involving Lacazette and Ozil sent Iwobi clear but his drive was too close to Shmeichel.
From nowhere, in the last minute of the half, Ozil galloped forward and exchanged a one-two with Bellerin before side-footing a glorious finish off the inside of the far post. The captain on the night had finally led his team by example.
The Arsenal 1-1 Leicester City
At the start of the second-half Ricardo’s body check on Lichsteiner, a target for so many fouls to this point, also did not draw any further punishment. The Gunners were starting purposefully and Iwobi’s cross was so very close to finding Mkhitaryan. Vardy brought down Ozil, again without caution, but the free-kick came to nought. Mkhitaryan sliced the first good chance of the half wide of the far post. The Armenian then snatched at another volley and fired over.
This was better commitment. “Red Army” rang out around the Grove. Leicester, feeling the pressure for the first time started to plainly waste time to draw the momentum from the hosts. A break-out earned them a corner that Ndidi headed against the crossbar as Leno failed to claim the cross. A warning shot across the bow perchance?
A raft of substitutions saw Matteo Gundouzi and Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang replace Mkhitaryan and Lichsteiner. Leicester sent on Allbrighton for Iheanacho. Unai Emery certainly won that little battle as Ozil and Bellerin immediately teed up Aubameyang for the lead. “We’re by far the greatest team the world has ever seen”.
The Arsenal 2-1 Leicester City
Ricardo finally drew a yellow for cynically stopping Aubameyang’s attempt to break free for a quick fire second. It wasn’t long coming. A beautiful move, another Ozil pass of beauty, another Aubameyang tap-in. Our second-half display again making our first-half a mystery.
The Arsenal 3-1 Leicester City
Ghezzal was hurriedly sent on by Claude Puel for Ricardo. The Gunners were playing with a back three utilising Xhaka as a virtually unemployed left-sided defender. Bellerin Torreira and Guendouzi formed another bank of three. Ozil, Iwobi, Aubameyang, and Lacazette formed a potent front four at times. This was tactical flexibility inspiring wonderful attacking football.
The last Puel sub was Okazaki for Maddison, the young Englishman who had run the first-half, but disappeared in the second. The ‘holic pound demanded another goal. It should have arrived when assister-in-chief Ozil set up Lacazette but Schmeichel made an amazing save at point blank range. Twelve minutes remained. On came Aaron Ramsey to allow captain Ozil a standing ovation he utterly deserved. Together with Iwobi he had taken this match by the scruff of the neck.
Iwobi assumed the role of assister-in-chief and Lacazette was again presented with a close-range chance he flicked over the top. The Frenchman was slid in again but flagged offside.
The match petered out as the lads had clearly not read last night’s late preview and assumed I was on 3-1. Yet another example of Emeryball. Entirely unconvincing for much of the first-half, but utterly dominant after the break. Is this a variation of rope-a-dope we’ve never seen before? Whatever, we just looked fabulous, as Graeme Souness grudgingly accepted afterwards.

Drink!
Now that second half was fun, Some of the football was sublime obviously Özil was superb but big props to a Iwobi who even in a poor first half was causing them problems and by the second his was pretty much unplayable !! Great Fun, And Bellerins learnt to pick a man wonders never cease 😉
Excellent report H. Nailed it.
Top 4
Cheers H!
Fast and on the money, if not the ‘Holic pound, Guv’nor. Lacca owes you one.
Cheers all. Lovely to see top people in first.
To Chippy’s point, bit by bit Bellerin is being coached on how to defend.
And clearly we have found Ozil’s best position. Captain.
Watched avidly in Sky Italia we had to send a disappointed little boy to bed at half-time as we are off to Florence early tomorrow. He missed a treat . So much to like – Leno made some great saves early on , Ozil was the player he can be tonight and Auba and Laca combined really well. Note how much quicker we moved the ball when we swapped Guendouzi for Xhaka in midfield! Big lesson there .
I thought we beat them down but they are a useful side and our first half was poor partly because Xhaka is such a liability . I like Emery’s willingness to make brave and imaginative substitutions as Lichsteiner was poor at left back . Up above the Totts and 3-1 as I predicted !
That was very enjoyable once the first goal went in and when we click we’re still a very very good team to watch.
Ozil’s best game?
honestly the game is unbelievable and also a joy to watch Thumbs up to the new Gafer……emery is a Good coach and a workaholic at that and I think is what arsenal need…….we’re better than what we played, cos there’s more to come…..#CYG!!
Great report Mr H, unlucky on the Holic £
A great come back it has to be said as per my previous drink! We are a great team to watch when we play like this, agree with TTG Xhaka is slowing our midfield down the new lad is not afraid to take the ball forward and looks comfortable …
Ozil was simply on another level tonight, that pass through three formations was sublime!
One thing to address is those weird first half shenanigans!
UTA!
Simply orgasmic.
Thanks Guvnor, the slow starts are
baffling I agree.
Perhaps UE thinks it’s a long hard
season so has come up with the
brilliant tactical innovation of only
playing for 45 minutes. We’ll be
fresh as tulips come the spring !
nice writeup, ‘holic, same game i saw (what i saw of it).
i yelled unreservedly at work when the third goal went in. what a goal it was.
i was getting off the plane from gatwick in oakland yesterday, and was standing there waiting for the door to be opened (a 20 minute stand), and was talking with a young madrileño steward about football. he’s a dejected real madrid fan, and i asked him what he thought of emery (after suggesting madrid might go as far as the europa league for next year on current form). he didn’t care for emery, didn’t think he was a good coach at psg, and that he’s not going to do well long-term for arsenal. i suggested his tactical flexibility, and his substitutions, not to mention his work ethic and instructional acumen seemed to be bringing out the best in this side. i also said the substitutions had been yielding really good results, and that we’d scored a lot more goals in the second half than the first. he was dubious, but hoped emery would earn his stripes here that he’d not earned in paris.
lo and behold our game today. i’m not claiming to be mystic meg, but emery’s strengths i listed to him all were in evidence today…and to all of us at various times over this winning streak. long may it continue.
a word on ozil and iwobi. wow.
Evening H
Good summary.
Difficult first 30 mins, due in no small part to the loss of Nacho on the left side, this clearly upset the balance of the defence, and credit to Leicester boss Puel, he came with a game plan and his players executed perfectly in that first period and we could easily have conceded more than 1.
But we didn’t,and how many times do we see late goals close to half time, change the narrative of a game.
This one clearly worked in our favor as we were a diff team after the break, yet Leicester’s one foray into our penalty area just before the hour mark, but for the crossbar, could have seen them take the lead.
Credit to Unai for his timely changes, and how many of us remember the last time we had such depth on the bench to call on as reinforcements. ??
Such was the quality of our play in the last half hour,we could and perhaps should have scored 5 instead of 2.
We won’t want to start so slowly against Pool in 2 wks time, because the quality of their front 3 is far superior to anything we have faced so far.
But i will leave that to our new Master Coach to sort out.
Also, kudos to Mesut, who on scoring tonight, became the highest scoring German player in the EPL.
Onward and upward to Lisbon on Thursday, with i would suggest,a few selection headaches, given these 2 games against Sporting will determine who finishes top of our Group.
That 2nd half was sublime. Beautiful. Ozil and Iwobi and PEA outstanding. But.. we could very very easily have been 1-0 down and down to 10 men, no? Still, you can only play the cards you’re dealt.
Didn’t see the first half so just watched Ozil’s goal now. A thing of beauty and I loved his display of emotion afterward. His vertical pass for the third goal, which I watched live on the telly, was also magnificent. Second and third goals came so fast Leicester must have been at least as confused as I was.
OM@14: 🙂
One question, however. If Emery can fix at half time the things we are getting wrong tactically, like switching Iwobi from left to right to peg back Chilwell, why can’t/doesn’t he make the adjustments during the course of the first half?
Pijiu25@17: You are right. We got a huge break when the Holding handball was missed. As well as conceding a penalty early doors, we might also have been down to 10 men for most of the game if he had got a second yellow for it.
As others have mentioned, props to Iwobi, who looks a player reborn this season.
We’ve got our Özil back !

3-1 I said in the preview and 3-1 it was, the win was a thing to savor considering Leicester were the better side for the first 30 min, had a clear penalty denied and most likely a sending off for Holding as well. Notwithstanding all that, from the time Mesut passed the ball to the goal till the end of the game, Arsenal played at a level, the foxes had no answer for.
Mesut was brilliant, I mean the goal, the pass to hector and then the pass to Pierre were just beautiful, the weight on each of those passes just makes you realize how good he is and very few in the world are that good. If the same performance was by hazard, debruyne or david silva the eloquent praises wouldnt stop across the globe but then who cares, we have our own in Mesut.
Iwobi continues to defy me and a few more, he just seems to have an air of confidence around him that makes him do anything and pull it off, the outrageous control and nutmeg in the first half being a classic example. He was terrific yesterday and it does augur well for the whole team balance considering he easily can play anywhere in the attack.
Defensively still vulnerable but Leno was excellent, we need sokratis and monreal back for the palace game and then the pool one.
Xhaka a liability? dont think so, yes the odd casualness does cause heartburns and at times goals but he dictates the pace of our play, the more Emery gets him to concentrate harder, the more beneficial he is to us.
On to Portugal and wont be surprising if a majority of who played yesterday , do start again. 10 in a row, we are winning what is in front of us and thats all that matters.
Bt8 @38.
He’s Irish when we win but an immigrant when we lose!
Watching the Holding handball I think he puts his arm up to help him jump and then the Leicester player jumping for the same ball knocks his arm towards to ball. I don’t think it was intentional, or that he could have avoided it. Probably still a pen but it would have been an unlucky one, and not worth a yellow card.
I thought Iwobi was top class. Unrecogniseable from last year. Handbrake well and truly off.
Torreira is exactly the right fit for this team. He plugs gaps but he is not afraid to advance forwards, likes a forward pass, yet picks his moments so he is rarely out of position if we lose possession and they break. He’s making a big difference.
Good stuff H and some good drinks above.
We are definitely moving in the right direction. First half I thought we looked a bit shaky at times. The defence looks incredibly dodgy when put under pressure. If will be interesting to see what happens when both Sokratis and Kos are both fit again. Leno looks impressive although he did rather flutter at that one corner. That aside I thought he was excellent. If he plays midweek and on Sunday and has similar performances then I think Cech could be struggling to get his place back.
Second half was much improved. Fast, flowing, one touch football that at times was a delight to watch. Great substitutions that had a big influence on the game.
Mesut Ozil. What a player. If he can now work out a way off doing that week in, week out then it would make Hazzard look like his apprentice. Who know, perhaps making him captain is just what he needs?
Tougher tests lie ahead. By 5th December we will have played Liverpool, The Mancs and the Middlesex Nomads. Then we will see how far we’ve actually come.
Great progress being made though. Impressive stuff.
Morning Steve.
Watching the second half of Arsenal matches is the new best thing since sliced bread! ☺️
Very true Holic.
Worth considering staying in the Tolly for the first half before taking the short walk over to enjoy the second?
@19 Ned
A fair question but I think
we got into gear for the last 10
minutes of the 1st half really –
before Iwobi switched wings.
In the current winning run lots
of things are going our way I feel,
hopefully it’s building confidence
and we’ll start playing better
from the start. We’ll find out soon
enough over the next month or
two…..
I said on another blog that the first 20 to 30 minutes of any game is the most difficult time during a match due to the intensity your opponent plays at .
As our opponents fitness level dwindles after the intensity they have played at Arsenal’s grip on the game takes effect as we have seen in the last nine(9) games
Mr Emery has upped our fitness level and we are making it work
A better attitude can make a lot of difference.
To state the (rather) obvious.
How Emery has gone about instilling the better attitude is maybe not quite as obvious but it seems he has done it quite well.
I know this is very old mannish of me but I hate the re-emergence of the dressing room victory selfies and general self congratulatory stuff going on on social media.
It was fucking Leicester.
Fucking Leicester and nine other nobodies.

Fabulous night at The Emirates. Floated home.
I listened to the Sports Bar on the way home – it’s that or music at that time of night. I also quite like Andy Goldstein. Jason Cundy, a failed footballer (40 Chelsea appearances in five years) hates Arsenal. Goldstein pointed out that between minute 44 and 80 Ozil won the game, significantly contributing to all three wonder goals. Cundy responded by saying, repeatedly, “yes but what did he do for the first 44 minutes? Nothing!”
Bloody Geoff Hurst. Apart from three swings of his boot and three goals what did he do in the World Cup Final?
Beethoven. Only nine sodding symphonies! Lazy git.
As for Michaelangelo, only ONE Sistine chapel!! They say he was so hungover he could barely get up the ladder!

Jason Cundy ( spelling mistake?) accusing a professional of underachievement – priceless. He was such a great player himself. Chelsea, The Totts and Ipswich when they were all shit and then he couldn’t get a regular game. Typical of the low quality idiots TalkShite employ.
Vinay – agree with all your points except Xhaka. He does dictate the pace we play at in midfield – and we were too slow. When we moved the ball quicker we tore them to shreds.
Xhaka looked a much better bet at left back when he moved there . It was a great tactical switch . He is too slow for the Premier League. If you notice we play much better in the second half after we bring on quicker players in midfield. It happened at Fulham and last night
I thought guendouzi was fantastic when he replaced Xhaka in midfield last night. So full of energy! More please!
I paid an interesting visit to the Fiorentina game on Sunday. I thought it was rather lacking in atmosphere compared to an English game partly because the pitch is some way away from the seats.
The Italians have VAR in their league and a penalty was awarded to Fiorentina by way of it after the referee rejected the appeal in real time.
I watched the match with a view to who might make an Arsenal player and was taken with the two midfielders of Fiorentia, Veretout and a Brazilian, Garson who looked skilful and strong. The Fiorentina goalkeeper, Lafont was linked with us last year before he moved to Florence. He looked a very capable sweeper-keeper .
However, the standout player and a really top prospect is Barella , the Cagliari midfielder. He is already an Italian international and moved and passed beautifully. He is called the new Pirlo in Italy!
The following day he was linked with us. With our budget we have little chance of signing him because he will fetch a lot of money but you can see after watching him for five minutes that he is the real deal and if we could sell Ramsey he would be a super upgrade. Mark his name he is going to be a big star.
Put me in the Guendouzi camp. Everybody must know I am not in the Xhaka one.
cba@40 and GSD@42 😀 😀
If Ozil played like that all the time it would disprove both of your comments, make them moot, or diminish them in some other way, but unfortunately he doesn’t.
Juve schooling United here
CBA@34,
Howdy yerself, too!
I hope you enjoy your night at the bar unencumbered by all wankers.
HOW’S THE IRISH border WORKING OUT FOR YOU ?
As long as there is one, hard or soft, it’ll work out fine. 🙂
Bit too orange that joke… sorry cba
Although with all the English bastards stuff, I’m wondering if you fly Ryanair. You big swine.
When we played Porto in March 2010 not only Bendtner but also Nasri and Eboue were on the scoresheet. Time may not fly, but it flies.
Chezza must think he’s in heaven, keeping goals with that defence in front of him. He’s going to win a shed load of medals, at least until Chiellini retires.
Rio Ferdinand just described the game as men against boys. Channeling Patrice Evra.
An interesting stat after Leicester win,
it has been more than 20 yrs since we last scored 2 or more goals in eleven consecutive matches.
Bit like our record at the Ramblers back in the day in the Sunday morning league,of having at least one player sent off for eleven matches in a row.
But i digress,
Zech Medley, the young central defender on the bench last night,is only 18,but currently playing for the under 23’s,he’s 6ft 5 and very quick by all accounts, and the people that matter at the Club, have very high hopes for him.
We might well see him against Blackpool next week.
TTG
Trust you are enjoying your overseas trip,i see the ladies won again on Sunday,6 nil against Reading, they really do seem to have a very strong squad this year,5 straight wins to start the season.
It’s been 10 yrs since the ladies last won the Title, but if we continue on the way we have started,we could return to the glory years when we swept all before us.
Clive,
I am indeed and have just watched United get outclassed by Juve. Italian commentator got quite excited.
The new ladies coach has done a great job thus far but Kym Little is injured for some time. Again.
Zech Medley really impressed me when I saw him. He is as you say a very big unit but his passing was excellent
GS54, TTG
Last night was the first time I saw Medley in the flesh. 6ft 5 he may be but he cannot be described as a big old unit. I would say 10 stone dripping wet. I’ve seen more fat on a chip. Get in the gym young man!
The comments on the North Bank were that he might be more suited to the LA Lakers!
Mind you, most of us were half cut so what do we know?
Countryman
No more big old units these days,
lean/mean and hopefully as quick over the ground as Dorset Micks best greyhound. !!
He will be very useful at both ends of the pitch,if he makes the grade.
Cheers, Holic!
So, do we have our Arsenal back yet?
Xhaka is always debatable, him at LWB, no thank you. Yes, his biggest problem is awareness but I sincerely think he has one of the best long range passing players in the team. Not sure if it was he who played the ball over the top in the first half which Iwobi failed to control, we have no one else who even tries that. If it was not him as well the point is as a midfielder he offers us something different whereas the others are fairly similar, Torriera early days to comment. Just one attribute may not cover his mistakes but in a team composition, Xhaka always ahead than Guendouzi, no offense to the Frenchman.
Are we there yet? no, are we in the right direction, of course yes, the table does not lie, will Nov be the test, tell me when it was not.
Juve schooling united, Alexis not even playing, good days to see the suffering.
For all those who missed it, Mavropanos seems to have been rechristened, in a rather unorthodox Western way, from Konstantinos, as he was known until recently, to the rather shorter “Dinos” which some may consider preferable but not me.
Not sure who was responsible.
In any case he seems to be our longest term injury worry at the moment.
Clive,
” Zech Medley, the young central defender on the bench last night,is only 18,but currently playing for the under 23’s,he’s 6ft 5 and very quick by all accounts, and the people that matter at the Club, have very high hopes for him. ”
Well, if he’s only 18 and already 6’5″, it looks like the “very high hopes” are working quite nicely. ?
What ever happened to Kristian (sp?) Bielik who, I believe, was 7’5″ ?
Pundits and Presenters: how the hell have we finished up with Rio Ferdinand, Jason Cun*y, Jamie Carraghghgher and Robbie Savage – to name but a few – actually speaking on broadcast media ?
One of them can barely speak at all, one is just completely stupid and the other two can only be heard by dogs ?
Hello Trev. Krystian is on loan at Charlton this season. He has made five appearances and scored one goal.
Hope you and the family are well.
We are thanks, Holic, and likewise.
And thanks for the Bielik update – I’ve lost touch with the yoofs a bit lately due to workload. It does seem that the club has been quick to unearth some fine young double barrels though, which is becoming a modern requirement.
Quick further question: why is the term “double barrelled ” not hyphenated ? ?
English eh ?
Xhaka is getting some stick but
fairs fair, after the Leicester game
I think he’s made that 5th choice
left back spot his own.
Guendouzi doesn’t look ready to
play week in, week out yet so I’m
hoping AMN can develop and
emerge as a threat to Xhaka.
Next season I’d like to see AMN
and Guendouzi fighting for a
place alongside Torreira with us
having bid Elneny and Xhaka a
fond farewell.
Nomads up 1-2 but Lloris sent off for last man take out outside the box at 80’
Nomads do a Spurs 2-2
Having a row with the landlord on Twitter about the Spurs game. The disallowed goal for offside for Spurs. I say never offside, Kane not interfering. Landlord disagrees. Fair enough. Then some numpty rows in (not sure if resident of this bar or not) and says I can’t be a proper Arsenal fan if I don’t always agree with any decision bad for Spurs. What a prat. Noticeable that landlord doesn’t come to my defence. Cheers Dave.
Anyway, Spurs only draw against piss poor team and are struggling in the group.
That was funny, Spuds look to
be out after only 3 games.
Shaming the country once more
with their Spursosity.
Don’t want spuds to drop into Europa League and anything that furthers that is welcome. As it is, they are the blue eyed boys of the media and the refs and get away with a lot of favorable decisions in the league. So what does one legitimate disallowed goal mean?
