In Brief- Gunners Seek Group Winning Performance
Nov 7th, 2018 by 'holic
“It’s a very important match because if we win we’re first in the group. That’s our clear target. This competition is very important for us. It’s one way to win a title and get into the Champions League next year.”
Unai Emery is anticipating us clinching Europa League Group E with a couple of games to spare by winning the return fixture against Sporting at the Grove. The team that is trusted to complete the task may not be dissimilar to the one that won the away match on matchday three.
Presumably Petr Cech will come in for Bernd Leno, and if all are passed fit the back four might be Stephan Lichsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Rob Holding, and Sead Kolasinac?
Matteo Guendouzi may return alongside Aaron Ramsey at the base of the midfield behind an attacking quartet of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Emile Smith-Rowe, Alex Iwobi, and Danny Welbeck?
We won the first meeting with an unanswered Welbeck strike. We will want to start this match with the same intensity we saw against Liverpool although the cast is likely to be largely different. We coped well with the threat of Nani that night but will know he is a very real threat, along with the full-back Acuna who gave Lichsteiner a torrid time in Lisbon.
The ‘holic pound
Will we see another inspired performance to stretch the unbeaten run to fifteen matches? The bookmakers have 2-0 as the favourite at a best of 6/1. I’m opposing them and going with 2-1 at 17/2 even though we have not conceded a goal to Sporting in our three previous meetings with the Lisbon club.
If you are going to the match wrap up warm as the temperature is forecast to fall into single digit territory. Those of us watching in the warm will miss the atmosphere, but not the chilled bones.
Have a good one, ‘holics.

Nice preview. I’ve passed my ticket on as I have other priorities at present but wish the boys well. We don’t want to need a result in the Ukraine just before we play the Totts. 2-0 to the Gunners
Cheers H.
I’d like the clean sheet. 2-0 would be lovely. I hope you are right with the attacking four. I like Welbz getting a few games up top and he will be well supported by the others. I hope Danny scores. And another for ESR would be fun. And a thumping header from Sokratis. And a ‘back on track’ goal for Miki.
So, err, 4-0 then.
Thanks for the preview Guvnor.
Team looks about right for what UE
will do but personally I’d rather
have Plez in again at CB and give
Eddie a start up front. Perhaps Jenks
as well. If Nacho doesn’t make the
Wolves game then 3 games in a week
for Kola when he’s just back might be
pushing his luck.
Any win will be fine but I’m not that
bothered about winning the group
and a draw will do just as well really.
Didn’t see the game but it looks like
a good result for Manure in Turin.
A mixed blessing for them as Maureen

The bones will be clad well to resist the chill. But single digits? Pah, that’s balmy.
Enjoy the game. I’m optimistic.
Tantalising preview Guvna.
Sadly I will neither be there nor watching from a warm sofa with a fine glass of Shiraz. I will be in class learning about the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britannia. Aye, cba, shiver your timbers, pal! I will have to watch the game when I get home at 10.30pm.
A win tonight would greatly simplify matters during a busy run of difficult games and allow us to concentrate on parochial matters.
However that is not our style at all, at all (second ‘at all’ added in wry homage to the clearly raw cultural sensitivities of the night owl known as cba).
I expect us to win, want us to win but fear our recurrent tendency not to make things easy for ourselves. However this team is psyched up by UE, so perhaps things will be different.
COYG
Not expecting an encore of Saturday but hope tonight’s crowd get behind a changed line up so we are able to clinch top spot in the Group and enable Emery to take a second eleven to the final away fixture. I don’t anticipate an easy game and hope the level of performance will be higher than that of the dire Blackpool encounter.
Am taking Holic’s advice and will at least be warm under my multi layers even if the football is less than exciting.
COYR
Anglo-Saxon settlements Bath??? Can you ask them if they found BTM’s wallet???
I’m quietly confident about this evening. All looks good to me. Single digits but still shorts weather. Here’s hoping for an easy passage into the knockout stages so we get a chance to play some of the real youngsters in future matches.
3-0 to the good guys. Bring it on.
Leno, Ozil, Laca and Xhaka not in the team today. Starting with
Cech, Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, Holding, Jenkinson, Guendouzi, Ramsey, Smith Rowe, Iwobi, Mkhitaryan, Welbeck
Subs: Martinez, Mustafi, Kolasinac, Torreira, Maitland-Niles, Aubameyang, Nketiah.
Getting the three points is all that matters. COYG.
Come OoooN!!!!
Couldn’t see that was a yellow
for Lichtsteiner
Horror
Welbeck
Not looking good for Danny.
Hope it’s not too bad.
Auba on
oh, danny. oh no.
Looks like Wellbeck broke is leg! Feel for the lad!
I couldn’t see what happened to
Danny there
omatt, he came across to head in a cross and collided with the defender, i think he landed wrong. looks like a bad sprain or a broken ankle.
Sorry to hear about Danny. (No TV here.) I hope it isn’t as bad as it sounds, and he recovers quickly in any case.
Not for the faint hearted but looks like he’s done his ankle really badly
https://mobile.twitter.com/Danny7Gallagher/status/1060632344137228288/photo/1
Thanks Scruz.
I’ve no commentary and it didn’t
look anything at first but Guendouzi
reaction made me fear the worst
that picture arthur put up looks dislocated. he’s gonna be out for a while.
omatt, you’re welcome. i watched him land and saw him banging the ground, then watched the replays and could see he landed badly. guendouzi’s reaction made me realize it was worse than it looked that i could see.
get well soon danny!
Get well Danny.
Come on Arsenal.
Lots of possession but not really made their keeper work. I’ve been impressed with Guendouzi and The Jenk. ESR also looking good.
You’ve got to feel for Danny. That looks very painful indeed. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.
Yeah, Guendouzi’s face was a
picture.
We’ve played ok so far but lacked
edge. I’d like to see Mkhitaryan and
Iwobi be more incisive in the 2nd
Half.
Jenks!
That was more like like it from
Mkhi.
Good block Jenks.
Good chance for Auba, might
have done better.
Kola on. Jenks did ok for us there.
Come on lads!
That volley from Jenks that went behind him was brilliant. I’m still laughing.
eddie was coming on, now licht is down with a hammy, and mustafi is coming on. damn it.
spoke too soon. amn on, that’s at least going to give us more pace and creativity at that position.
Gutting for Lich and Eddie. I wanted to see Eddie on.
Licht down now.
AMN on. I think Eddie was going
to get a chance before that.
Licht been licked too?
@62
that was a cracker from Jenks
🙂
“Guendouzi scythes down Nani”
It could just be my bloodthirstiness coming out but I have to say I like the sound of it.
“A tired ball from the Sporting winger, who has worked tirelessly tonight.”
Ahem.
And he’s still a better listen than Stewart Robson.
69 was from the arsenal.com commentary, by the way
Not nearly clinical enough. Injuries have dictated some of the changes but we’ve had more than enough of the ball to have been up in this game.
GSD @70. Maybe the Sporting winger could have paced himself a bit better and been able to contribute something to his team in the critical final 20 minutes of the game?
Presumably he was banking on his tireless nature to see him through.
I thought we were much brighter before Danny’s injury. It’s hard to know how that affects the team. Fair play to Sporting, who defended very well. Much better than I expected. We weren’t up to much in terms of final ball tonight.
The crowd were roaring us on in the last ten especially. That was great to hear. Shame we couldn’t pull a goal out for them. Late goals are such a good habit.
They have played more than 12 minutes of added time in the other group E League game, somewhere in the depths of Eastern Europe. Parallel universe?
