Love It Or Hate It – THE Derby Is Here
Dec 1st, 2018 by 'holic
Hello all, replete after three pints of Guinness and a fish supper it is time to allow the thoughts to focus on yet another North London versus Middlesex derby. This is a strange one these days, anticipated and loathed if not in equal measure. The long-standing neighbour avoids it like the plague. With my upbringing it will always be the first fixture I look for when they are announced in June.
I’m very fortunate in that all my ‘mumble mumble’ years on the planet it’s a fixture we have invariably won. In league and cup ties at Highbury and The Grove we have won 36, drawn 19, and lost just 12. There have been some memorable ones among them. Georgie Armstrong’s brace in the first double season, a couple of League Cup semi-final triumphs, the Alan Sunderland, Charlie Nicholas, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, and Robert Pires years.
It’s eight years since the Nomads won at our place. I hope the new players to the club this season have been warned what is expected of them when the whistle blows at 2pm. Nothing less than 100 per cent commitment from minute one to minute ninety-plus. I have no doubt that Lucas Torreira will not have needed to be told. That first tackle needs to send a message across London. We’re looking for a nineteenth consecutive match unbeaten at the very, very least.
Bernd Leno will be playing his first big derby behind a back four I hope featuring Hector Bellerin, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and please Rob Holding alongside Sokratis Papastathopoulos or Skhodran Mustafi. I know who the popular choice would be, but Mustafi was outstanding for us in the corresponding fixture last season, scoring and helping to keep a clean sheet in our comfortable 2-0 victory. He certainly knows what the supporters will demand.
Granit Xhaka and Torreira are well established in front of that defence and will have to time their challenges to perfection Against a Tottenham midfield that seems to suffer more than most from an inner ear imbalance. The four in front of them will determine the outcome and getting that quartet right is Unai Emery’s biggest selection poser. I am going against my normal preference if Alexandre Lacazette is fit to start. I would keep Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang on the bench fresh to run at tiring defenders in the last half an hour. I suspect that Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil, and Alex Iwobi will get the nod. I would have gone with Aaron Ramsey who also knows exactly what is expected in this match and loves scoring against the soap-dodgers.
The ‘holic pound
For the second match running I am tipping 3-2 to the Arsenal. Surely Tottenham will be fired up by the knowledge that we will go above them in the table with a win. Much though I would love them to be as inept as Vorskla Poltava it isn’t happening. Shop around for 22/1 if you don’t think I’m completely off my trolley!
If you are at the match tomorrow the team also expects much of us. We need to be the number twelve, turning the Grove into a raucous bear pit. The contest will be up and down. They will have their moments, but hopefully we will have more. If you are watching from behind the sofa rather than in person will the boys to victory. That would be a marvellous introduction to THE derby for Unai Emery and all the new boys.

First?
Let’s win it for Mrs TTG.
And Chris.
Excellent call to arms Guv’nor.
I really can’t see what’s not to like about a match against the team formerly from the other end of the Seven Sisters Road. Whatever the result, and obviously one is considerably more acceptable than the other two, for us old-timers, it’s THE match of the season, and surely even those who are wetter behind the ears would class it as one of the matches. But, this bar is a broad church…
Away the lads, show the swamp dwellers the advantage of actually getting your home stadium built, never mind the score, never mind the quality JUST WIN IT.
COYG
…and best wishes to Mrs TTG for a continuing good recovery.
(Thanks for the timely reminder, Landlord)
Soap dodgers. Heh.
Itinerants.
Just do them!
I prefer to be in continental yerp for the fuel protests than at that fixture
Thankyou all for your continued good wishes. If we do win Mrs TTG’s thoughts will inevitably turn to her Tottenham supporting grandson hoping he is not too down. Should the worse happen she will be sending virtual hugs to her Gooner grandson . She believes I’m old enough to look after myself.
Massive game which is a wonderful experience if we win but just the opposite if we lose. My head tells me a draw my heart points to a 2-1 win . I don’t want Mkhitaryan anywhere near the team he doesn’t do enough but I hear Lacazette won’t start ( pity) . I’d prefer ESR in the side ahead of Mkhi. What a stage for a prodigy !
Maybe a tad early for ESR, TTG? But oh the buzz if he did play and scored again. ?
You may of course be right Holic. Maybe I woukd go with Guendouzi pushed further forward to free Ozil to float
It could be a Guendouzi of a match if my sixth sense is working as advertised. Time to come in from the cold, young man, and to keep the nomadic hordes on the steppes.
The league table is providing some mirth in the Manchester United row and the goal differential column where it says -1. A prescription for mid table mediocrity if ever I saw one. Well done, Jose.
Put into context tonight. A top. top man I played golf with every weekend when I moved here has finally succumbed to the big C after an amazing fight. I’m in bits. Tomorrow i hope not to be. This is a cunt of a weekend.
Thanks as always for the preview
Guvnor and very sorry to hear
about your friend passing. Then
again happy to hear that Mrs TTG
is feeling better. As we all get older
I guess we realise how precious
and precarious life is.
Good luck to all gooners today and
I hope there’s a win to warm the
cockles.
it’s derby day, and we are going to spank the nomadic scum. 3-0.
holic, my condolences. the spirit of your friend will always keep you company while you remember the rounds of 18 you went with him, as you grieve. a round on the bar for all and sundry in his honor.
Very sorry to hear about your friend’s passing, ‘holic.
ach ‘holic
that’s rotten
dirty great big hugs sent
from me and herself
and the girls outside
Holic
So sorry about your loss. Great friends leave a huge hole in our lives when they pass. Hugs sent from the TTGs
Sorry to learn of your friend’s passing, Guv’nor. Never an easy time. Thoughts with you and your friend’s family.
But heartening news of Mrs TTG.
As for the game, any win will do.
Hi everyone, I felt compelled to join the drinks in the best Arsenal bar on the internet today to fortify myself for the coming battle, so please have a drink on me and join me in a toast to the mighty Arsenal. COME ON YOU GUNNERS !!
You’ve set it up beautifully, Holic. Have a fantastic day. If you should happen to bump into Steve, tell him I said he’s authorised to buy you my beverage for your consumption in my absence.
I’m in dodgy wifi country so will be listening at best today. We look great on the radio when we score.
I like the sound of that 3-2.
1-0 to the Arsenal. Iwobi to score.
UTA.
EMERY!

Come ooooon!
In Brighton for the weekend. Mrs NDR has given me a two hour pass to watch the game. Hoping to find a nice Irish bar with none of that lot in it. COYG.
Watching Chavs vs Fulham.
Chavs winning 1-0 but Fulham
giving it a fair go 2nd half.
Chambers playing midfield, he
nearly scored and has run about
tackling people but his passing
isn’t the best.
Unchanged XI for today.
3 at the back again, hopefully
Holding is fine and Mkhi can
raise his game.
Laca a bit unlucky to lose his
place.
No slow start today!
CoYGS
Get in!!
Get in PEA
Great start 🙂
Keep it up please please
Hope Laca gets his chance, early times show we can hit them on the counter
These spuds are real actors, Sokratis touched Son and he fell down and got up hobbling and the free kick led to the equalizer.
Was it off side?
Shocking keeping for that first goal.
1-2 down. Shiittttt
That’s a dive from Son.
Thank you Mike Dean for the penalty that never was a penalty!
Don’t think he touched him, where are you VAR when we need you
Arsenal vs 12 c.nts
Mhiki is nowhere
Sokratis come on man sort it out, Iwobi and Miki absent in my eyes!
As usual we gift them a goal to go level, Leno should have done better no doubt about that!
Then Mike Dean gift them a phantom penalty! This is why VAR is a must in the EPL!
No all is lost but we need to play even better in the second half!
COYG!
Time to regroup and go
at them again 2nd half.
Aurier isn’t a good defender
and Kola/Iwobi should
get some joy against him
2nd half. 3-2 is still on,
COYGs
How the hell is Mike Dean still refereeing such big games is beyond me…
We started fantastically well and the Spuds didn’t know what hit them. The mistake by Leno let them get back in the game and then the penalty award was just farcical.
Got to start the second half similar to the first and convert the chances we get. Laca might play a critical role off the bench and so could Rambo. COYG
Laca!!!!
ARSENAL ARE RAMPANT NOW!!!!!
COME ON!!!!!!!!!!
Torreira’s first goal, couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.
GET THE FFFF INnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!
Torrreeerrrrraaaaaaaaaaa!
Up The Arse!!!
?
Come on Bellerin, concentrate.
We Love you Arsenal, we do!
We Love you Arsenal, we do!
We Love you Arsenal we do!
Ohh Arsenal we love you………
These spuds have been taught the dark arts well by Pocchetino. The blighter Verthongen deliberately caught Laca and acted so bloody innocent.
Great win. Showed the spuds their place.

you fuckin beauties !!!!!

To Spud supporters, paraphrasing Game Of Thrones:
“St. Totteringham’s Day is coming…..”
What a fantastic win!!
Lucas Torreira is an absolute star in the making and we should already extend his contract and slap a 150 million buyout clause on top. Emery deserves all of the plaudits for being bold and decisive. Auba scored a memorable derby goal for the equalizer. Bring on the Red Mancs….COYG
Wow, sooooo happy, my room shook
Tot is shit
Dean is shit
We created so much, could have scored a couple more but great display from the lads
Brilliant from the boys 2nd half.
Loved seeing Bellerin in Vertonghen’s
face when he was sent off. And
Sokratis telling off Son for being a
cheaty diver after the game.
Great subs from Emery at half time
too – making 2 changes and
switching it round showed balls of
steel.
Spuds were second best and got the
nothing they deserved.
Brilliant. North London remains a very pleasing colour of red.
Watched the highlights again, it’s gonna be a nice week ahead ?
I said any win would do and 4-2 is as good as any.
Torreira is looking a bargain and then some at £26 million. If that was Sanllehi’s doing he deserves a bonus. He is different from Gilberto (by about 20 cms for a start) but gives us what we have missed since Gilberto left.
cba@51: Brilliant.
Out for a pre-Christmas meal with a couple of Oxonne’s schoolfriends.
Sneaked a look at my phone ariund 2.30 1-up. Yay.
Another look just before 3.00. Disaster! 1-2 down at half-time.
Steeled myself to look again neare to the whistle. Let joy be unbounded: 3-2 to the good guys. Just thinking about ordering another bottle when the score updates to 4-2.
Nice lunch, too.
So, remind me, what do you think of Tottenham?
COYG CCMUED
What an enjoyable afternoon. Loved the fight and passion. In the end, we bullied the Nomads. Very pleasing to see and another big step in our progression
Now for some social media spud bashing.

Unbelievably lucky Pool.
After their second goal chaotic bust up between the boys and the group of scums, I texted my friend and wrote “Perfecy attitude but with not so perfect scoreline”….in the end it was “Perfect Attitude with the perfect scoreline”
Proud with the boys tonight! North London is Red!
That second half performance was epic from us. I don’t remember the Spuds winning a single 50-50 ball…true derby spirit from everyone in the team. Fantastic.
Holic@12, my sincere condolences. It’s certainly tough fighting with both hands tied behind your back.
Hopefully today’s result will put a smile on your face.

What a game! What a day! I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed my Arsenal fix but today was a wonderful day to be a Gooner.
I thought we completely outplayed Tottenham today for all but a few minutes before and after halftime and most of that time was a result of a pathetic decision to give them a penalty when Son dived . I had a perfect view of it much better than Dean had. I haven’t seen any telly coverage but trust me he wasn’t touched. In fact I would have sent off Donkey Dier for slapping Ramsey after his very lucky goal but it was good that they left him on so we could run rings around him.
Many were superb today including Emery. The biggest difference from Wenger is his willingness to make immediate high-impact substitutions. He got it so right today …again
Top performances by Aubameyang, Lacazette, Ramsey, Torreira ( Love that guy) Kolasinac, Holding and Iwobi .
I’m sure we will get a wonderful description from the Maestro tomorrow…let’s enjoy
Fucking Fantastic and that Cunt Hazard will be crying into his cornflakes tomorrow morning – Lovely!!

FUCKIN ADORABLE
I spent too much time giving credence to the likes of Jenas, Sherwood ( he of the tossed gilet), Merson , Lawrenson and co. They were wildly exaggerating the individual superiority of the Totts over our players. In retrospect you realise a lot of these idiots are nicking a living pretending to understand the game just because they were professionals ( even if some didn’t behave like professionals eh Merse?!)
On today’s evidence tactically Emery is superior to Poch who made some selection bloopers and we have many very impressive talents and lots of great talent coming through.
I didn’t mention Guendouzi previously but that boy pounded around the pitch looking way more experienced and motivated than their pedestrian midfield . Ok they bossed Chelsea but they didn’t boss us.
One tangential point to Pangloss. Do I detect that you are married to a schoolgirl? Surely not ?
CBA@70,
That sounds tragic.

TTG’s tangential question strikes a chord. If I may respond normally, Oxonne is no longer a schoolgirl, once upon a time, aye but no longer.
She had her own health scare 10-odd years ago which seems now to be behind her (rather like her schooldays in fact). I sincerely hope Mrs G continues her recovery and the two of you are soon able to look back on November 2018 with some degree of equanimity.

Great, great result! North London is red once more and the nomadic LWCs are sent packing with their tails between their legs!

Hey there, boyos!
Just dropping in for a quickie.
What do we think of Tottnum?
That is all.
Be good, ‘Holics, Guv’
Some interesting decisions to be made towards the end of the season if Ozil’s back remains spazy and Ramsey plays as well in the No 10 role as he did in his half yesterday.
Mention should be made, as others have above, of Holding, who is looking better and better with a run of games.
And echoing TTG@74 on Guendouzi. Amid all the talk of the crop of youngster’s coming through, we often forget that Guendouzi is still only 19.
Now that’s what you call a proper derby, the game had it all, brilliance, fights, stupid refereeing decisions and most importantly passion. Passion on the pitch and passionate support of it by the fans.
The first 25 min we should have been up by atleast 2 goals, Kola had his best game for us and was terrorizing aurier, Iwobi left his thinking cap back in the dressing room else even he would have been on the score sheet. After 25, we had a lapse in concentration and viola 2 goals down. We should have cleared the ball than allow the free kick and Holding need not have gone sliding on son even though there was barely a contact.
Second half and the substitutions made all the difference. Ramsey had a telling impact and Laca scored as always, we were magnificent once we equalized.
Did anyone notice where was Deli Ali? of course Torreira had him for lunch, Kane but for the penalty was anonymous and largely thanks to Sokratis. Son was their only player who tried and Eriksen was totally lost again.
The game yet again had individual brilliance, Torreira best player on the pitch but if you notice a game where Xhaka made no mistakes whatsoever, underlines how important he is to us, Pierre with the goal of the match and Hector with a terrific game overall.
In the end, need to mention Ramsey, the man is off, we all know that but the professional in him was evident yesterday and always has been. He changed the complexion of the match, never once has he sulked with the developments and it begs the question, why are we not retaining him?
lastly, worried about Mesut, i love him to bits but if Emery feels he aint cut for such games, wonder how long it will be before he leaves?
On to old toilet and what a dream run it will be if we finally put it past those jokers.
There’s a few decisions to be made even
sooner Ned 🙂
Kola played well – do we jettison the
wing backs when Nacho is fit?
Auba keeps scoring at CF – how do we
play him and Laca without sticking
Aubameyang on the left and weakening
us defensively. Laca can’t be happy on
the bench indefinitely.
Sokratis played well too – if we do
return to 4 at the back which CB drops?
I guess Guendouzi will start Weds with
Torreira but I’m not sure about the
best lineup in front of them.
Decisions to be made after a couple of
wins are good though and even better
is that UE has shown that if they don’t
work he can change it round and the
team can respond and make it work.
That is a happy feeling 🙂
I really don’t know why I’ve only just caught up with this fine post and comment thread. Your optimism was well placed, Guvna, only on this occasion slightly undercooked.
I must add my voice to the praise for our new master-tactician. Another brilliant set of substitutions and fan as I have been of the ridiculously gifted MO, that game was not his forte (if that is not a contradiction in terms) and the willingness of all 11 selected (and the subs even while warming up) to stand up for themselves and their teammates and scrap when necessary was a big factor in quite the most glorious victory I have seen at the Emirates.
Well played, Gunners (including the ‘twelfth man’ who rose to your challenge, Guvna).
Well played, Señor Emery.
CBA@90,
Why don’t you keep the treacle concoction until you have a stinking cold, and your well defined sense of taste isn’t working?
Oh my. What a day. My son came down from University for the game – he was ecstatic with his decision. On a day like that, when the crowd has the volume turned up to 11, there’s nothing like it. Goals, including a worldie from Auba, a punch up, a Spurs red card, coming from behind. Watching them drift out from the 80th minute. What a game.I must have hugged 20 people across three rows when we scored each time. Lost my specs twice. Like Arseblog this morning, I’m struggling to remember a game at the Emirates I enjoyed more. Even beating Barcelona. All the players were huge but especially our five foot four midfield dynamo. Did he enjoy his goal or what?
DIER DIER WHAT’S THE SCORE?
Hope Soton get the manager
change bounce for Wednesday.
It would certainly cheer me up if
Hughes left my club.
Can someone explain to me again why we are prepared to let Arron Ramsey walk away for nothing at the end of the season????
Steve T,
I assume the question is
rhetorical (like I did last time
you asked) 🙂
I did notice that Aaron is being
cut more slack than Sanchez or
Özil last season. In their case
play well and it was to attract a
buyer, play badly and it’s they
didn’t care.
Aaron has been generally ok
this season but he has also had a
few ineffective games too.
Don’t know why he’s perceived as
being a good guy and the other
two weren’t. The better atmosphere
round the club and supporters is
I guess the main reason.
If we’re getting rid of Ramsey because the deal Gazidis had in place was financially irresponsible, in the minds of the new regime, Mesut Ozil’s days are surely numbered.
Never mind his complete lack of balls and willingness to be conveniently ill or injured when either doesn’t fancy it, or his manager doesn’t fancy him, they must be shaking their heads in despair at the money he tkes out of the club.
I reckon he’ll be gone in January if we get a half decent offer.
As for the game, I was away yesterday and only caught up with a recording later last night.
Echoing everyone else who has said that was a real derby game for a change, I liked the fighting spirit and there was true passion on and off the pitch. Proper NLD that.
Only thing I didn’t like was taking five minutes to celebrate every goal. Get it done, get back to the game, stick another one in the net.
I haven’t seen such a stunned and sick expression on Vertonghen’s face since the day he realised he’d just signed for Tottenham.
As for Harry Winks getting all hard with Xhaka, I was reminded of Luis Figo’s taunting of Real Madrid when he won the title with Barcelona.
White cry-babies indeed 🙂
Matt.
Thank you. Valid points.
My point is that whatever we think of him, he surely has a decent value? If he ha no future here then he has to leave for some value. Whether that’s a swap deal like Sanchez, or we sell him in January. Realistically he should have been sold in the summer.
Wait for the window to open I guess?
This could be the beginning of the end for Ozil. That will be sad in my eyes but looking at the game yesterday I just struggle to see him playing a part where the intensity is so high. Who knows? On his day he is truly a joy to watch.
It will be interesting to see how his back is on Wednesday??
Steve,
Yes, I wasn’t really trying to answer your
question and I agree with you. It was just
a thought that occurred to me on a tangential
point.
On your point, I think we’ve had
all the answer the club is going to
give as to why we’re seemingly
trying to play hardball with Aaron and his
agent.
If it was simply financial and we didn’t think
he was worth the salary Ivan had offered
we could still have signed the contract
and then sold him in the summer.
I think we have no chance of moving him
in January, given our attitude to him why
would he move in January when he can
most likely get far more in the summer.
The only possible opportunity to realise part of Ramsey’s value will be if a team like Real Madrid, as rumoured , or Bayern, who are struggling, see an opportunity to sign a player at a heavy discount who will aid them in the second half of the season. This way we might get some value back, say £15m maximum. Arsenal might use an agent to tout him around to generate a bidding competition. It woukd have to be a glamour club like that , to be attractive to him. The alternative is a swap deal a la Sanchez / Mkhi.
I thought Emery did brilliantly yesterday in rejigging the team so effectively at half-time. Ramsey played in a role suited to Ozil and just as he did at Fulham he played brilliantly between the lines. We could of course offer Ramsey a new contract and sell him but I’m not sure Arsenal does things like that! The emergence of ESR will affect Ramsey quite quickly but given our relatively modest transfer budget it seems bizarre that we will let a second successive British international midfield player after LJW, leave for nothing and pay a bloke over £300k a week who doesn’t fit into the team style.
I’m confidently told that we won’t have more than about £40 m unless we get into the Champions League next summer. So we’ve let about £65 m walk away for nothing if Ramsey goes and paying out £15 m plus a year to Ozil. Weird economics by any standards!
Imagine if Unai could work out how to fit MO into the team and utilise his skill set……then we really would be flying

If all this talk about Emery making or breaking players has anything to it, then we don’t have to worry about wasting money on Ozil. He will either be providing value for the money or out the door.
One of Ramsey’s misfortunes is to have been regarded as a utility midfielder. His best position is as the No 10 he was playing in the second half on Sunday, and where he plays for Wales so effectively. He works well with Auba and Laca as they can pull the CBs apart and leave room for those runs of his. His problem is that there are plenty of other aspirants for that position.
