Will Torreira Terrorise The Terriers?
Dec 7th, 2018 by 'holic
The third match of a mixed but uplifting week sees us welcome Huddersfield Town back to The Grove. The feelgood factor from last Sunday remains prominent in the recent memory, and taking a point home from Old Trafford extended the unbeaten run to 20 matches. Sadly it was confirmed today that Rob Holding ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Wednesday and is likely to be out for around nine months. Good luck with the recovery, Rob.
As well as Rob and fellow long-term absentees Konstantinos Mavropanos and Danny Welbeck we could be without Nacho Monreal, Aaron Ramsey, and Mesut Ozil. Granit Xhaka returns after suspension and Unai Emery suggested Laurent Koscielny may be fit enough to be a part of the 18 man squad.
As I said on today’s Arsecast it is likely that we will revert to a flat back four in front of Bernd Leno. Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and Sead Kolasinac should feature behind the reunited partnership of Xhaka and Lucas Torreira.
Likeliest front four will be Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alex Iwobi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Alexandre Lacazette-zette-zette, put the ball into the net. The bench will certainly have room for some of the young guns.
Huddersfield arrive fighting for their Premier League place, sitting just a point above the bottom three. It is looking as though they are in for a long, hard season but have a well-respected head coach in David Wagner. He highlighted the task his charges face,
“In these situations we have to be more focused, show more concentration and be more resolute as well. We also have to be more brutal in one or another situation to make sure we show everybody that we fight to keep the ball out of the net. This will be, for sure, very, very important on Saturday against Arsenal.”
The ‘holic pound
Last season the corresponding fixture finished 5-0 to The Arsenal. I’m not expecting a repeat. Three matches in seven days at this level is bound to have an effect on anyone although the Terriers themselves have played three in eight days, but have had an extra day of rest as they played, and lost 2-1, at Bournemouth on Tuesday.
I’m looking at the 11/1 available on 3-1 to the Gunners. My faith in 3-2 has been destroyed!
I hope to see a few of you at the match or in one of the surrounding hostelries. Have a great one, ‘holics.

I don’t like Henrikh

Step up fella
Will be in the Tolly with a mate before the game. Look forward to seeing anyone who’s there. The Chapman Derby. Bring it on. Saturday 3pm. Old School.
thanks, all, for the condolences in the previous drinks. the last four hours have seen unexpected tears.
holic, i’ll have a read of this later. i’ll be at jack’s at 7 am hoisting a pint to all the departed (including gooner terry, and your golfing buddy).
to those who weren’t as lucky!
Nice preview H.
Very much looking forward to bringing my now not so little man with me tomorrow to my first game of the season.
The way we have been playing I Feel that complacency could be our biggest enemy tomorrow. No doubt they will come to defend? That shouldn’t be a shock to us and I would hope that it should cause too many problems.
Due to age restrictions I won’t be able to join some of you in various local establishments. That will have to wait for another day.
Enjoy boys and girls.
holic, nice preview. i’d actually like to use this game and the next to get torreira some rest, if possible. start him on the bench, with guendouzi and granit in front of the defense. or maybe amn and granit. if we don’t use him, he gets a rest until a week sunday at st. mary’s for southampton.
make sure esr is at least on the bench, if not starting wherever we might start aaron. also blood zech medley in the league if necessary for huddlesfield… radical, i know, but if we’re going to rise up a defender from within, he seems to be the one. i have to believe huddersfield is about the same level as vorskla…
enjoy the game those who go! we’ll be cheering them on from 7 am at jack’s bar in san jose, so COYG!
SCG@5: Reading the Guv’nor’s post before the drinks, I wondered if Emery might go for a back three with Medley and Kos sharing the duties alongside Mustafi and Sokratis. Good to know there are others of a similar mind.
fuck scruz
that’s rough
enormous love sent
from Donegal
The other reason to go with a back three is that Kolasinac is such a better wing back than full back. The same is true of Bellerin, if to lesser degree.
There is also Pleguezuelo to consider, though he is more a right sided CB whereas Medley and Kos both play on the left side.
Good man, cba.
ned, sure, give kos and medley a half game each. and agreed about the back three/wingbacks. with our current crop of left/right backs, that’s definitely the way to go (unless we run lichsteiner and monreal, then a flat four works fine with mustafi and sokratis).
agreed with ned @9, cba. thanks for the donegallant love…

Scruz,
My condolences for the loss of your friends and fellow Gooners they will be missed no doubt! I’ll raise my glass to those folk myself during the game!
I sincerely hope we have enough in the tank to overcome the visitors if we could avoid those slow first half’s that would be a great improvement for me.

Thanks for the preview Guvnor.
The team and the score look
about right but I’ll go for 3-0
after we let in 4* in the last two
games.
Though dubious about Auba in front
of Kola on the left, I hope home to
Huddersfield will be ok.

the other one the better
Not caught up yet but I just read scruzgooner’s in the last drinks.
So sorry for the loss of your friends from the South Bay Gooners who sound like wonderful people. I would still like to meet you there for a game some day.
Main course: 3 points
Gravy: appearances by Kos and AMN
The menu for a very well rounded meal.
Dessert of a clean sheet is optional.
cba@13, lovely. a little velvet underground, a little elliot smith, both with a lot less “i’ll kill myself now”. thanks, even a little crack healed is helpful, and that was one. i’m sorry to say i understand the shit aspect of losing people; i don’t do it gracefully, mostly with anger and resentment that they’re gone. my best friend died, drunk, in 1999, and i am still pissed at the fucker.
thanks arthur and bt8, i appreciate the good hearts. bt8, please, if you’re ever in the bay area, i’d like to buy you a beer and catch a game (if possible).
heading to bed to be up at 5:30 to drive the 45 minutes to jack’s for my first pint of black stuff at about 6:45…i told the barman that he’d better open the case of kleenex, too.
Just caught up after some time away from the bar. So sorry to hear Scruz’s news and send him deepest sympathy. I hope he’s well asleep now after his last drink and wish him a safe 45 minute drive.
Oh, nice preview too Guv. Whatever team Unai puts out let’s hope they get the job done.
Normally after a tough and injury-strewn week like the one we’ve just come through any win would be enough for me, but given the league table and likely importance of goal difference a hatful would be more than usually welcome.
COYG
I hope we continue with a back 5 but our options are limited. Really sorry for Rob Holding, he was making into a fine CB and must have hoped to make the England squad in the Spring. It will be a long slog to get up to speed again but let’s hope we see him early next season . All the best Rob.
Numbers are a bit short on the train this morning as Gooner Kevin is dog sitting but Mahala and I are looking forward to hearing Gooner Malcolm’s adventures in getting to and from OT on Wednesday which took him over 24 hours !
Will we see either Ozil or Rambo? I think we are likely to play both Laca and Auba as the Kids will no doubt be playing on Thursday.
Looking forward to a fairly comfortable win , 3-1 sounds good to me.

UP THE ARSENAL
We will lead 3:1 into stoppage time when they will score for the final result 3:2, sorry Boss ?
History says we don’t score a lot of goals against Huddersfield at home. The 5-0 last season was an outlier. Apart from then, we haven’t scored more than two against them at home in a league game since, perversely, the last time we lost to them, in the 3-5 in 1954. However, even one or two goals has been sufficient to win.
But as Pangloss notes, goal difference may matter a lot come the pointy end of the season, so a hatful today would be welcome. It could conceivably make a difference to whether we are third, fourth or fifth come this evening.
Nice preview of today. I hope we can manage a 3-0 victory . I think you are close to the team but we might see AMN or ESR

The same players have played against Totnum and Manure and must be knackered. Hope they score early and get to control the game. Win by any margin is a must as we can’t afford any more draws. Draws against Palace, Wolves and Manure still rankle. COYG.
All very tight
Good chance Auba
Auba and Laca miss two gilt edged chances in two minutes.
Laca too, even better chance
It’s getting ridiculous
Sokratis suspended
How is Laca off?
How come it was offise?? Can someone explain it to me?
let off
really sloppy
good shot Torreira
Not a great half by any means.
Should of scored and could have given
one away. Ref is a bit odd.
And I don’t understand the offside either
Ambydex
Kolasinac is playing as an out and out left winger. Off for the second half with Iwobi or Mkhi on instead? Surely.
Stupid dive by Mustafi. He and SokraPapa miss next game?
sitting in jacks with a dozen in red and white. lloyd was toasted at kickoff and people are remembering him well. cheers, pangloss and cba.
laca was offside on auba’s header, then challenged the defender…
the bs call was mustafi’s yellow. he was actually hit, compared with fucking son last weekend.
nice shot by torreira and great save by their keeper.
thinking of chris and his big tv.
I think iwobi with his dribble and drive could strech their defense better. Like Osaka said we were sloppy and slow at time, not to mention unlucky. Destroy them on 2nd half please…
@43 iBtM
Yes, I think they’re both out
for Soton
Have to think about whether
to play Kos midweek now.
And Nacho.
So we are sticking to our routine of not winning the 1st half, get in in the second one, come on lads
Auba was not offside this time I think
Not really going for us at the moment.
Need to stick at it
We need that extra something now from our lads now…
Come on Arsenal!
Have not seen much of the game was stuck in the car but had the Arsenal.com commentary on. Sounded like a very frustrating first half…
Back home now on a stream
Our exertions in the earlier games in the week is taking it toll. Moreover, they are very good at time management.
Manure have shown how Arsenal can be kicked out of the match and other teams are adopting the same policy.
Now Mustafi’s hamstring. We are falling back on Monreal now. I hope he lasts.
Mustafi off
Looks like Nacho on
Iwobi’s few touches really heavy
Please let the handbrake off, lads…we need to play quicker and more direct…
Frustrating stuff
Not getting the passing right
so far.
Huddersfield are a kicky time-wasting
bunch too.
Could do with an Auba tap in
Come on lads dig deep!
Miki really frustrates me
3 dives? We should not be that pathetic
I forgot to mention the ref
is pissing me off too
Torreira!!!!
Yes!!!!!
Torriera getttttt innnnnn siolololololoooooo
Now. Let’s keep a clean sheet FFS. Can we?
I heard Mustafi didn’t dive and the ref is awful too!
Lucaaaas!
No yellow for Huddersfield player for diving!
7 minutes shows how much time
they wasted
Still giving the ball away
Where did the 7 extra minutes come from?
Ksn
No that’s not happening he went rather easily if you ask me
only 19 and already a great player, MG
imagine in five years
oh boy
I’ll take the 3 points
We deserved it
Somebody give Torreiera a raise!!!
And sign him for next 8 years
What a frustrating game, they have to stop doing that to us!
Yeah!!!! Well done guys. Three points in the bag.
We made it harder by not taking our earlier chances.
Torreira take a bow not just for the goal but for the way you play. Guendouzi had a great game too – ridiculous that he is only 19.
Torreira terrorise the Terriers! How did ‘holic know?
‘Holic’s headline says it all!
Looks like he terrorized them just enough. 🙂
Torreira, what a buy he is. How bout that for his second goal?
Well, closer than I would have liked! Torreira is a fantastic acquisition. Top man, great goal. Seven points from a possible 9. It looked for a long time like it might be 5.
Huddersfield’s keeper had some good moments I thought.
Kos, Monreal and Lichtie all likely to start in the next game.

Just got in from the game. Not a great performance but 3 points none the less.
First things first. We got 3 yellows for diving/simulation? Were they correct decisions? I’ve not seen replays.
Yes Steve they were, unfortunately
Shity defeated by Chelski, my oh my, so much for being unbeatable
Man City won’t have an invincible season which almost every pundit had said was inevitable. Only Pool and hope they lose before the year is over. Happy day.
I thought Xhaka’s yellow was a joke. Gendouzi was borderline and as for Mustafi, stoopid is as stoopid does, Steve. His was a Son special.
2 out of 3 were not correct
and i was hoping that PeP would take something from the bridge. it’ll be
better for us. faaaaar better.

That was 100 minutes of my life I won’t get back. 10 minutes of injury time played by the prissiest little prick of a referee I’ve seen for a long time . If we’d not scored I’m convinced he would have played a couple of minutes. Like the incompetent Marriner on Wednesday he almost lost control of a match through his own inability to judge what really merited punishment.
As for the game Huddersfield were cynical, physical, well-organised and not a side you want to play if you are as tired as we looked. Lossl made a wonderful save from Torreira who was comfortably the best player on the field. Guendouzi worked hard and Nacho looked very assured on his return. I can’t recall Leno making a save of any note.
One of the chaps I went with hadn’t been to Arsenal since the Highbury days. He wasn’t impressed with the fare on offer. But we got three points and are creeping closer to Citeh who are no longer invincible!

Just watched the MOTD highlights and the 3 yellows for simulation.
I have no idea what Xhaka was doing. From the tv highlights I couldn’t see any contact? If there was it has to be done ncredibly minimal. That said, I have absolutely no idea why he would go to ground?
Mustafi is a definite dive. There is the most minimal of contact and then sniper effect kicks in and we get the massive theatrical tumble to the floor. For all of those that were up in arms last Sunday at the Spuds pen will need to take a look at Mustafi. Not a lot of difference between the two for me.
Guendozi was just embarrassing. I hope he takes a long hard look st that and never even contemplates anything remotely similar again. Blame youth and just move on.
I hope those that continue to berate officials for absolutely everything that goes slightly against us remember today. Regardless of what other teams may do, I sincerely hope that we don’t resort to such behaviour again.
3 yellows in one game for simulation is a record apparently. Not one I’m particularly proud of.
steve
whaddya think ?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMcBlnypozM
It’s really bizarre because we play really well against the so called TOp 6 this season but for the life we can’t organise ourselves against lesser oppositions.
Huddersfield pressed us high up and we really struggled, l agree that we MUST play better against these teams there no excuses here.
Miki had another one of those games his passing is really bad sometimes and decision making even worse. Iwobi had few heavy touches to begin with, he looks really confident then stops and doesn’t have a clue what to do next.
We really missed Rambo as our number 10.
Great to see Monreal back on the pitch, however Kolasinac has been playing well recently. Seems the more he plays the better he becomes too!
I was listening to the Arsenal.com commentry they did say Mustafi was clipped and never dived.
There points is the bag that matters the most, Auba needs to be more clinical with his chances as well!
UTA!
A catchy little tune cba. Sounds like a mixture of The Undertones and Green Day.
