We Play The 1960 Champions Shortly Before Playing The 1961 Champions
Aug 16th, 2019 by 'holic
In 1960, a year before the neighbours won their second and last league title, Burnley won their second and last too. They are clubs at a similar level, it would seem. I will hopefully enjoy us seeing off both in the next fortnight.
Who will run out against the clarets in the Saturday lunchtime fixture? Bernd Leno is a given, as are probably Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Nacho Monreal, but does David Luiz come in for either Sokratis Papastathopoulos or Calum Chambers? That would be harsh after last week’s clean sheet at Newcastle.
I am assuming that Granit Xhaka, one of our five captains, will also be retained in a 4-2-3-1 if he is passed fit? I thought Matteo Guendouzi played very well last week but he knows his place will be under pressure from Lucas Torreira, if not one of the younger lads.
The choice of three will be interesting. Could Nicolas Pepe come in for Henrikh Mkhitaryan? Will Dani Ceballos get a first start, or perhaps Emile Smith Rowe? Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the left if Alexandre Lacazette is ok to return up top? What of Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson? This will be a big test for Unai Emery.
We tend to win handsomely against the visitors these days, and we are looking for an eleventh consecutive win against them, but they have given us some tough moments down the years.
The ‘holic pound
Of course I’m on the home win. 2-0 to The Arsenal at 13/2 is the favourite. Sometimes you just have to run with the first choice. Now, do I have two pounds somewhere? 🙂 I hope to see a number of you tomorrow. Have a great one, ‘holics.
The ABW preview
I offered my availability for this, albeit from the local, but strangely I was not required. Enjoy it nonetheless. Danny and the excellent Simon provide the content.

god bless The Arsenal
I’m making a journey up from holiday in Norfolk to the game tomorrow. God bless Mrs TTG! It doesn’t compare to Countryman’s pilgrimage last week but it’s a full day out for an old geezer like me.
Very hard to read Emery’s mind but I hear Xhaka may be out and ESR played for the U23s tonight ( and scored) . My guess would be
Leno
AMN Chambers Sokratis Nacho
Torreira Guendouzi
Pepe Ceballos Auba
Lacazette
Good enough to chase off the Clarets 3-0 ( and I do remember them winning the league and playing in the European Cup – televised ( second half only )
funny as fuck

Nicely set up, Holic. I’m hoping to see Ceballos and Pepi feature if not start. I have a sneaking suspicion that Luiz will start in preparation of the visit to Anfield.
Hoping to catch you tomorrow.

So many questions, Holic. Not like you. I know UE is a tad Delphic but you usually stick your neck out a bit further. ?
I suspect Luiz will get a start beside Papa. He’s got to get Arsenal game time before we face Liverpool. I don’t think Pepe will start but he will come on in the second half. I expect the following starters:
Leno
AMN Luiz Papa Monreal
Torreira Guendouzi
Mkhi Ceballos PEA
Laca
I hope to catch you after the game after having a bite to eat at my favourite Italian if you’re hanging around the usual place for the Shitteh match.
Here’s to the first home win of the season. ?

Nice preview Guvnor.
I guess Emery’s starting XI’s
may be a bit more conservative
than we expect until after the
Spud game. We’ve a new CB
partnership, exploitable
weaknesses at both FBs and
maybe no Xhaka, who bafflingly
UE seems to rate.
The defence did well last week
but Newcastle were woeful up
front.
Anyway, I’m expecting a tight
2-1 win and another just take
the 3 points performance.
Thanks for the preview, H. I’m torn between hoping Luiz starts ahead of The Spuds visit and rewarding Chambers for a good time against Newcastle. I suspect U.E. feels the same way. I wonder if he will start all three in this game, not just for this reason but also in a bid to combat Burnley’s use of two big men up front.
Xhaka will start if he is fit, believe it or not but he is our best forward passer among all our midfielders not named Mesut Ozil(not counting Ceballos). I suspect one of Ozil/Ceballos will start too. I would be surprised if either of the two teenagers who started last week start this one.
I think U.E. will go with Leno, AMN, Chambers, Luis, Papa, Kola, Xhaka, Gwen, Mkhi, Auba, Laca. I would love to see Leno, AMN, Luiz, Papa, Nacho, Xhaka, Gwen, Ozil, Auba, Mkhi and Laca start but then I’m neither the coach nor do I have 1% of his experience.
Good to see you back, CBA!
SSY @32, it’s still early days but I think you’re on to something.
Early to bed and early to rise makes it possible to catch a 6:30am kickoff. If my calculations are correct that would be 4:30 scruzgooner time but who really needs sleep anyway?
The early kick off works for

I like the way you think, OM.

bt8, that’s too sparrowfarting early tomorrow. i’m in the midst of a blacksmith hammer-in, and need my beauty rest (as is always the case, not even on the barber’s chart, me). i’m taping the game, and hope to watch our thrashing them 4-0 on sunday after the exquisite post-loadout shower… sorry about the holic pound, in that case, guv.
So the First home game of the new season – Just past Richmond so the wait for a cold one in good company draws closer. The big debate of the day is whether I buy my little one a home or away shirt with either my namesake or rocky 7 on the back – Choices. As she’s only 7 months 5 letters is the max 🙂 3-1 the Arsenal

Get in Laca! ??????
Good goal Laca
Living a bit dangerously since.
Going to need another goal here and preferably before they score theirs.
It was coming. Too much fannying about by us in attack and they go and score.
Really annoying one to give
away just before half time.
But it had been coming.
Poor crossing from good
positions and getting pushed
out of it in midfield.
Auba!!!!
Auba Boom!
Big chance for Auba.
Then we score!!!
Nice finish Auba!!!!
He gave the keeper the eyes. From OUTSIDE the box.
Great goal, really really impressed with Ceballos on this evidence.
Dani looks the business.
Yes!!!!!
How long of a loan do we have for Ceballos??
We’ll need an extension on that!!

3 more points.
Players came in and players

And nice to see Dyche so
upset at the end. Clog and

Ceballos vis a vis Xhaka; notice any difference ?
Check out the league table. As it should be is the same as as it is.

Ceballos and Pepe look the business. So does Joe Willock. I’d like to be beating the likes of Burnley by more than 2-1 though.
Ceballos was incredible in this match. He controlled the match with his passing and created second goal. He also made this awesome skill on two Burnley players.
He just might end up as one of the best signing of the season (despite being only on loan).
Making my way home to a temporary home in Norfolk but thought coming up was worthwhile as the result was good and a number of the new players did well. Hugely impressed with Ceballos, my neighbour picked up the similarity to Fabregas early on . Although Luisvwas culpable for the goal the ball took a deflection which changed its course. I thought Luiz did well and enjoyed some of Pépé’s trickery. Willock also put in a shift and I was also impressed with Guendouzi and Sokratis. Lava was clearly not fully fit. Burnley were very much Burnley . We had to work very hard and repel crosses and long
balls which by and large we did well. My biggest criticism was the risky
nature of our passing especially in our own area. It
Is bound to end in tears from time to time. With Burnley the ball
Is likely to end in tiers ?. Hopefully Ceballos will replace Xhaka permanently ( this season at least ) after this excellent performance
Hope Auba was watching
Adrian screw up and gift
Southampton a goal.
It was the 2nd time he’d
done that in the game
Sterner tests to come for Luiz and Sokratis, but they looked a decent CB pairing today. Cebillos may turn out to be the best signing of the season, as Joe@76 suggests, but Luiz could well prove to be the best bargain.
The one thing they should stop doing, that is the simplest thing to fix, is playing it out from the back at goal kicks.
There’s no need to do it, no need particularly for TWO defenders to drop back behind the line of the six yard box, as they did so often today, and … to be quite frank … we ain’t good enough passers to do it.
It just invites pressure, they can push right onto us and we’re going to lose games doing it.
Pack it in.
Chambers was unlucky to be
dropped today but UE was
probably right based on the
result. The next two
matches will be a better test
of Luiz, Ceballos, Pepe and
Willock. I thought Willock and
AMN both looked comfortable
enough again today though
Nelson struggled a bit.
We’ve seen Luiz enough to know
but for the newer guys it’s going
to be a testing couple of games.
Too wasteful in attack today
but hopefully we will get
sharper. Encouraging that
Laca and Auba remember
where the net is.
Rocky 7 won the day, Dan C is an absolute baller and I’m fucked if I can tell the difference between 23 or 29 ?
City 2-2 Spuds. Great result for the others in traditional top six.
Shitty were robbed basically I
thought but dropped points all
round is handy.
Well I must say I rather enjoyed that day out in the sun.
But nobody who was there commented on the major change since last season. The clock counted forwards from 0 to 45 and from 45 to 90. Not backwards as has always been the case.
Does no one care anything about tradition? Why were the members of this bar not consulted?
One comment as someone in the ground was how poorly handled VAR was as far as the paying spectators were concerned. I have no idea how detailed the analysis of our disallowed goal was on TV but there was no chance to examine the evidence and frankly as an experience the whole thing was …meh. I have experience of Italian VAR and it was similarly naff. The spectators in the ground have no idea what is going on.
I have seen the way replays illuminate and enhance the game for spectators in the ground at cricket, Rugby League and Rugby Union but football really has to improve the way replays are presented .
I didn’t watch Citeh- Totts tonight but it seemed to take a very long time to make a decision looking at the info put out on the BBC website. ( by the way that’s two games in a row the Totts have had major breaks on VAR at the Etihad
TTG. Hear hear to that re VAR. I go to Lords and see and hear what the umpire sees and how he makes his decision. At the Emirates we saw a screen that said that a check was being made, and what the final decision was. Not good enough.
Still brooding about the clock though.
Looks like someone got the clock arse backwards.
The main thing about VAR vs BT was that VAR took forever and BT had already done and done with it long before VAR was finished.
I hate VAR.
I might have mentioned it.
TTG @ 86, CM100 @87. I was there and fully share those emotions. The clock was an unconsulted reversal of the norm. The VAR moments put the rowd in aspic for 3-5 minutes. Total nonsense. I later saw the utter travesty at Shitteh. They are killing the game. I am happy with our window and happy with the development of our team in transition. All the newbies look an upgrade. Ceballos looks the business as does Pepe. Willock is stepping up brilliantly. But I am glad not to have made a season long commitment as this VAR shit is utter cack (tautology).
I am ad idem with my colleagues about VAR but it Is compounded by the ridiculous rule which denied Citeh a goal tonight. No way was that handball. When you think back to the Llorente handball last season in the QF of the Champions League and how dubious that was and how the VAR judges deem that Llamela’s assault on Rodri was not a penalty after VAR scrutiny we are seeing the game reduced to a farce . They started with altering the offside law and we now have a whole series of stupid amendments which just complicate and create ridicule.
The lack of replays at the ground is
a nonsense that has been going on
for years now. As I recall FIFA started
it by deciding no “controversial”
replays would be shown as it might
upset the crowd and cause trouble.
Football is a real leader when it comes
to showing contempt for the fans who
pay at the door.
Though I suspect the refs must
be happy so far – they can just
shrug and say not my decision
mate. That is actually better to
me as it means less pointless
protesting. And the offside part
of VAR is also working well – the
rule may be too complicated but
the offside/not offside cases are
simple and accurate.
The penalty decisions are a
problem as is the time taken
but no doubt with patience and
goodwill on all sides (hahaha, I
laughed to myself as I typed that)
improvements can be made.
Hmmmm, sorry Pangloss.
I was doing that balanced
opinion thing again @93
It’s the early morning coffee
after an Arsenal win that brings
it on
Would of have been an even
better day if the idiot Ings
had stuck the ball in the
Liverpoo net instead of
miskicking from 3 yards out.
Dyche was whining about our
players diving all over the place
today.
Did anyone see that?
I thought we bought a couple
of cheap free kicks in the last
10 but then so did Burnley.
Sean Dyche?
Ha, ha, ha, ha!
Twat!
Matt,
I wouldn’t wish to describe Dyche as a hypocrite, but did Burnley not finish 18th in last season’s fair play league?
The media should call him out on this, as the timing of his whinge infers that the Arse are cheats.
Guys. Listen to what Dyche actually says. He said, “I’m more worried about the greater good of the game. It’s nothing against Arsenal or their players by the way.” He was talking in general about a Premier League meeting where all managers were told that any dives will be punished by a yellow card. That gives every player licence to cheat at least once in every game. He then said that dives should be punished with a red card.
Personally, I don’t have an issue with any of that.
In true cba style…….
@ Matt
I think Dyche’s moaning about Arsenal players diving to the ground was late in the game when Burnley had a break and Barns ( a very nice gentle player ) decided to barge into Kola and put him to the ground .
The much beloved Dean saw this ( surprise surprise ) and yellow carded Barns , it’s obvious Kola should have stayed on his feet from this unprovoked attack which came from slightly behind him which he didn’t know was going to happen .
Steve T,
I listened as you suggested and he does
talk in general but then later he says it
happened 3 or 4 times today before
assuring us again that he’s not
talking about Arsenal.
I suppose it depends on whether
you believe his assurances or
not – personally I think he’s a
sneaky little hypocrite.
I like the idea of red cards for
diving but players have got so
good at it that it’s unworkable.
Decision making would be
completely inconsistent or we’d
need even more VAR stoppages
Steve V,
The Barnes thing at the end
was funny and so poetically
just 🙂
OM@94. It’s good to see the dawning of self-awareness. I hope that in time you will learn to self-censor before inflicting such reasonable and balanced nonsense on an unsuspecting internet.
I’m trying to resist the temptation to get involved in the VAR discussions as I fear my opinions are rather Matt-like.
As has been said before (and apologies for repeating it), just 36 more wins and we will be in good shape.
COYG
I’ve just watched the Man &Cent;iti v Tinies match on MotD.
Surely the ruling-out of a late Oilers’ goal was nothing to do with VAR; it was down to a recent law-change by the FA? (A point that, to be fair, was made by Mr Lineker before, as far as I recall, being ignored by Messrs. Shearer and Murphy.)
Decrying VAR sells more paper, gets more viewers and attract more clicks that reasonableness and fidelity toward the facts. ‘Twas ever thus and, likely, ever will be.
COYG
Hello all. The report will be up either tonight or tomorrow night.
The thing about it being a law change is sound enough, but so is criticism of VAR, as without VAR the accidental handball wasn’t seen.
So it’s a case of double cuntery.
Steve T@99,
I think Dyche could have saved his whinge for any time other than his post match interview – we will get tainted by association.
You must agree that he is a total hypocrite to talk about fair playing when he managed his team to 18th place in last year’s fair play league.
If anyone is to lecture football on how to play the game it should be Pepe or Klopp, not some skidmark from Burnley.
Cynic,
I don’t really understand most of the criticism of VAR.
As far as I can make out, it generally seems to come down to “It takes so long to review anything that it buggers up ‘the flow of the game’ and bores the paying punters rigid”.
I certainly agree with the complaints about implementation (leading to “boring the punters rigid”). There are many sports that have something similar – I regularly watch Rugby Union, Tennis and American Football – and that do it better. It’s only been around in football for 5 minutes or so, so it doesn’t surprise me that the implementation leads something to be desired. I hope, without much confidence, that football administrators will improve things over time, hopefully quickly. (I suspect that the speed of administrators’ response will depend on the amount of pressure they come under from the meeja, and I’m not quite sure which side they will consider their bread to be buttered upon – the worse the implementation the more column inches or broadcast seconds they can fill with criticisms.)
I’m not sure I understand the concept of “the flow of the game”. I don’t know any details of the implementation of VAR, I believe it may only get consulted when play has stopped so the game isn’t flowing anyway.
That said, I think I am vaguely opposed to VAR. It seems to hold out the prospect of some kind of perfect decision making, which I just don’t think is going to happen, ever. Part of the problem is the weirdly complex rules – does anyone actually understand the offside law? Basically, and at risk of getting overly philosophical, the game is played by people, who make mistakes from time to time; I really can’t see any good reason to think that it would be improved if it were officiated by people who didn’t make mistakes, or whose mistakes were later corrected.
COYG
VAR will end up sucking the life out of the game IMO, especially when combined with daft changes to the existing laws.
In other news, this cricket substitution law is nonsense. In the first test we’re a bowler short for almost the entire game because Anderson went in the fetlock and could not be replaced with an active player, yet a bash on the noggin allows a replacement for Smith who can bat all day.
Laws shmaws.
Enjoying Fat Frank’s super debut of 1 point from 6.
7 second half goals in yesterday’s Villarreal-Granada match unfortunately overshadowed Santi Cazorla’s first half penalty. Game ended 4-4.
Finally, it’s here >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sokratis has said that it may be easier to defend against Liverpool than Burnley. He must be really thick to invite so much pressure before a big game. Just the motivation that Mane, Salah etc., need to up their game.
