A Painful Lesson Learned? Let's Hope So
Jan 22nd, 2008 by 'holic
Let’s show some grace from the start. Tottenham thoroughly deserved to go through over two legs, and did an extremely professional job on the Gunners in their second-leg triumph. The nuts and bolts of the contest can be found in the match report on Arsenal.com.
Part of the education for the younger players is to learn how to deal with situations they have faced in this semi-final, so that hopefully they will be better prepared next time round.
Not that it was just the younger players who failed to produce as Spurs clinically put the contest out of reach with four goals in the first hour. Now is not a time to be critical of individuals however.
It’s a shame that the class exhibited on the pitch by the hosts did not extend to the pond life in the stands. The vile abuse directed at Arsene Wenger is over and above what constitutes banter. The missiles directed at Cesc Fabregas said everything about large numbers of those who watch their football in the marshlands.
The silent majority at Tottenham deserve better. Football deserves better.
Arsene Wenger can now turn his attentions to Saturday, and the visit of Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Events at White Hart Lane will occupy his mind. It is a fair bet he would have liked to have used a number of the lads involved at Tottenham again, but will they be suffering from the footballing equivalent of shell-shock?
I’ll look at that in greater detail later. For now my thoughts are with the youngest Arsenal supporters. Those of you who have only seen football in this century will never have felt the pain of a defeat to Tottenham. Don’t let it get you down. It doesn’t happen very often!

Yep, spurs deserved their win against a weakened Arsenal. Lets be frank they are a much better club than their current position indicates. Im glad we have played them in the league and hopefully they can do us some favours with better performances against MU and Chelsea the balance of the year.
COME ON YOUR SPURS! Totally deserved win tonight. We all know the Arse are scum and their arrogant supporters will be playing the “we played a weak team” card for months to come. So bloody what, you were well and truely stuffed tonight. Hopefully Spurs will roll over for Chelski and Manure in the league to stop the Scum finishing first.
Yes good job to Spurs (tho I hate to admit it) well shit happens took them long enough to seek their revenge so now this rivalry will be more interesting now because it looks like Ramos has turned them around. But don’t let that win make you think that you’re the greatest club in the world now!
easy, easy, easy
gallas was a joke
Tottenham beat us tonight. They fielded their strongest possible team against our team which was mainly youngsters. OK we brought on some more experienced players but by then we were chasing the game.
Our youngsters have tasted a bitter defeat and will not want to experience it again.
We have bigger fish to fry. Champions league, Premiership, and FA Cup. Tottenham don’t have to worry about these things.
Also take into account that they are exploding with pride at the moment because they beat a second string side. We should take it as a compliment to our club that they are so happy.
Seriously chill out and relax the team was slightly off balance and off par tonight. We won’t see it like that again this season.
my big head is banging and i cant sleep, what d hell? 6 goals is unbelievable i am not trying to call names or blame anybody but arrrrrrrh! bert has served us well in the past but time is up as for theo am still waiting.arrogance should be knocked out of bendtners head gallas should handle him during training and give him a agood knock.why argue withn your captain instead of shoving his booys up jermaine jenas oesophagus when the refree is not looking. as for yhe spurs fans calling names at arsene wenger and throwing missilesw at cesc i think they will sleep well tonite.
why does it always have to be arsenal that keeps learning these lessons this way. i hope the season does not end in two weeks again like last seaso. if it does it only means that youth policy does not bring you trophies but dejected and heartbroken fans
spurs arent looking bad for that guaranteed 4th place finish are they…
I think the match said everything about who will and wont make it at Arsenal. Firstly, Gilberto is way past his prime, he gave no cover to the defence. He used to be the invisible wall, now he’s just invisible. They were playing great counter-attacking football but we had no-one to break up the play. Secondly, Abou Diaby has again shown that he is not the player he promised to be before his injury, it would be best if Arsene realises this and pushes Kieran Gibbs in the fold. Diaby is too much of head down player, making some terrible decisions, and holding onto the ball too long.
Well done though to Spurs, it’s nice to see at least one team see’s the Carling Cup as an important trophy to win (sorry, couldn’t resist!!).
Once again Wenger shows that he has absolutely no class whatsoever. Good defeats evil……for once.
let’s get real, that was the strongest team you could have put out except maybe rosicky and clichy. dont use the excuse you didn’t have toure/eboue, every club in the prem has lost players to the African Cup of nations. we didnt even have our strongest team, no bale and robinson. you were out clashed all over the pitch. to lose 5-1 in any game is shameful hahahahahahahaha!!!!
EDIT BY HOLIC We don’t use the name you cannot even spell around here. I shall refer to you as LWC. I’m told it stands for Lillywhite chap, or something like that.
Almunia, Toure, Clichy, Flamini, Rosicky, Adebayor and van Persie added would have constituted our strongest team. But 2 out 7 isn’t bad!!!
[…] menerima kunjungan sama ada Chealsea ataupun Everton. Diharapkan pemain boleh mengambil sedikit pelajaran dari kekalahan ini untuk digunakan pada masa hadapan. – Statistik […]
Spurs fans, enjoy this, cos it will be another ten years before you go down this route again. Enjoy.
I just hope that wenger takes these competitions seriously. We reached the semi finals and we let go of the opportunity of a place in the finals very easily. The idea is to win the game and last year it cost us the trophy. We havent won a trophy for the last two seasons and to play fringe players in the first leg was a disgrace and to get thrashed today is un acceptable. They closed us down and this seems to be the ploy of many opponents. WE still keep on trying to go through the middle where we have given time for the opposition to fall back. WE need to inject pace from flanks and in the middle to catch out opposition from falling back. Our defense was aweful as we were not quick enough to close them as they did to us as they had pace to slice us at will. Arsen need to buy the next generation of defenders as we have no good cover
Totally agree with some of the comments made about Gilberto. Everytime the guy plays we don’t look the same. He’s so f*cking sloppy on the ball and it always ends up creeping into our game. A midfielder cannot give the ball away that many times in a match.
Not that it was just Gilberto to be honest. Gallas was appalling, three times he was beaten on the edge of the box at the bye-line. We constantly passed, moved, proded for an opening only for a big f*cking belt up the pitch from a spurs defender resulting in absolute pandamonium in our ‘defence’.
Of course we should put this defeat in perspective, we certainly have bigger fish to fry and players to come in but I would be worried what an injury to Toure in March/April could do to us.
All the those pathetic LWC supporters are coming out of the woodwork now arent you, a complete and utter freak result which will never happen again, you had your moment against chelsea in this shite cup and now youve had it against us……..try beating us in the league and then you’ll have the right to be our local rivals as your no more important to us than the likes of barnet or enfield !!
The LWCs are so fucking stupid you’ll probably take this win rather than to win the cup itself which wont happen anyway, everton are better and chelsea are miles better than you ….it is a known fact spurs fans know procisely fuck all about the game !!!
champions league against Kaka & AC Milan and fighting with Utd for the premiership Title
battling it out for 12th spot with newcastle , going out to utd in the FA Cup and a trip to slovenia or some european shit hole in the UEFA (carling cup)…mmmmm let me think which competitions Id rather be in ?????
by the way we did the double over you …perhaps you had forgotten about that …..you mugs !
Mr holic, I am gutted with the result even with the second team plus 3. It is a gamble too far and I hope Mr Wenger spends some money on top players even half price players like he used too.
I watched the game on Sky and the comments seemed as usual biased (but we were poor) but when they zoomed in to the Arsenal supporter with the Rocky shirt on his comments made me feel uneasy he was talking about the boxer but an Arsenal shirt with Rocky on it means Rocastle and a football commentator should know that and should not have said what he did.
Lets face it. these are the facts. Spurs can only beat the team in front of them. wenger insists on his youth policy which in turn rests his so called first teamers for the league etc. this was not a team of kids as per the first leg. (which you were lucky to get away with a draw). yes ok, you could have had almunia in goal. yes if african cup of nations hadnt been on you would have had a couple more “first teamers” playing…. if my auntie had bollocks she would have been my uncle. You got beat in every department today. had both teams played the best teams, the score would have been closer, but today was our day. 5 goals… could have been a similar result at the emirates,,,, who to blame… easy Wenger. he picks the team. he puts 100M of talent on bench.???????????????????? why, he could have played them… now you gotta take the flak for his decision. welcome to the down side of the kide blooding policy…. have a good day tomorrow.
coys
Wenger used the Carling Cup to blood our young reserves again this season and give them a taste of what is to come in what he views as a midseason friendly, mission accomplished for him. If we had lost to any other team I wouldn’t have given a monkeys……slightly gutted that we didn’t turn them over for the umpteenth time, ultimate humiliation losing to your rivals reserves…..(Last season for those forgetful spuds?!?).
However it wasn’t to be this time around, spurs put in a fair performance…….our reserves didn’t tonight, simple as that. Whilst you can only play what is in front of you, our team was not the Arsenal that we see week in week out in the real competitions and so for me proves nothing other than spurs lack of ambition in the real competitions, risking injuries to key players for the relegation fight they may face, in order to be able to compete against other teams reserves. When spurs manage to beat an Arsenal line up in anything other than a mickey mouse training cup, I will be concerned, but until that likely event will take solace in the first teams dominance and exquisite football.
1 win in 22, over 9 years against the reserves………wow what a cause for celebration.
PS Jenas – what a deluded cunt, anyone would’ve thought he’d won the world cup and been given the golden boot to hear him after the game, he’d be lucky to get a job cleaning boots at the emirates.
tonight? its not important to arsene, or me…. he made the decision 2 years ago to put the premiership and champions league as priority, and this season not just league cup but now fa cup we play our squad players, its the right policy… so come on its been a great run for the squad.. and we are top equal and ac milan awaits… gilberto is ok as a squad player, but theo is nowhere near ready for the first team.. as for the game i was there and actually we had most of the ball but everything went there way tonight, bendtner og and then hits the bar, it happens, you cant win them all and its ok once every 10 years and not suprising when its so important to them and at home and its not for us… for perspective i would rather we lose to newcastle in the cup saturday and win in the league on tuesday… thats the choices you have to make with a squad our size compared to chelsea and man utd who have spent 100 million more than us this season…
so celebrate a great run for our squad in the carling, we dont care about it, its a training session… arsene knows… afc champions this year!
MUGGY LWC’S where have u been the last nine years , just before you get carried away lets look a few years (9 for example) many defeats for you both in the league and the cup (oh yeah and lasagne)
And lets not forget winning the title at you own ground, i do believe that makes it 2 LEAGUE TITLES that we have won at the lane, the same amount you have won in your whole pathetic history, MASSIVE CLUB WE WON THE LEAGUE AT WHITE HART LANE WE WON THE LEAGUE AT THE SHITHOLE WE WON THE LEAGUE AT WHITE HART LANE
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN TOTTENHAM
EVER SEEN TOTTENHAM
EVER SEEN TOTTENHAM WIN THE LEAGUE HAVE YOU FUCK
Alright my fellow gooners now calm down. This cup competition isn’t something Wenger takes to heart. I’m not trying to make excuses or “cop out”-this defeat truly doesn’t mean a thing and anyone who thinks otherwise is a complete fool. He (Arsene) uses this tournament to blood his young students and give them experience. This tournament teaches the youngsters how to cope with loss as well as the joy of winning. So now that this nonsense is over and done we can concentrate on whats really important: CL, PL, and FA cup.
Spurs fans please, please don’t take this too personally but congratulations on the win….finally you can go and concentrate on trying to win the most meaningful piece of silverware that you could possibly grasp your little minds upon and claiming your guaranteed 4th place spot in the Prem. Good luck.
Gooners we have no more distractions now. Our time is now. We have AC Milan and Kaka to deal with in the CL-which will take all of our concentration, skill, and coherent sharpness to defeat. But who the hell are AC Milan, where are they sitting right now, where is their confidence level? And where are we sitting now, where is our level of competence? It will be a great battle. We will succeed.
As for the Prem title race (haha, yids) we sitting 2nd/1st. We have the tools, strength, and team to win the trophy and get it back to where football is beautiful; to where the trophy belongs.
And as for the FA Cup…to tell you the truth we are our own enemy. In my most humble and honest opinion 2 out of the remaining 3 competitions will be ours but a third would be absolutely brilliant and unexpected. I would love to be deliriously misconstrued and claim the treble but playing Manc isn’t my style.
Thats enough of my banter, fellow gooners, boys…support your players, love your club and your club will do the same for you. Gooner4lyf
5-1
5-1.
WAS THAT NOT ARSENAL OUT THERE TODAY. WENGER PICKED A TEAM HE THOUGHT WOULD WIN. HE FAILED. YOU FAILED. HE COULD HAVE PLAYED HIS FULL STRENGTH TEAM HE DIDNTG. WE WIN. YOU LOSE 5- 1. YOUR BOYS TOOK A HELL OF A BEATING. BOYS INCLUDING FABREGAS, GALLAS, SAGNA, DIABY, GILBERTO, PHLEM, ADEBAYBOLLOCKS, EDUARDO. ALL RESERVE TEAM PLAYERS APPARENTLY.
Top LWC I wish you was the agent of the Arsenal players on the bench. Arsene only paid about £20 mil for that £100 mil worth of talent on the bench.
How much was Bent?
It’s not Spurs fault that Arsene didn’t field a stronger team Spurs wanted to win more. The fact Arsene dosn’t take the cup as seriously does that reflect on the players attitude to the cup as well.
It is a difficult balance keeping good squad players on the bench and we came unstuck today top players need to play or they will leave look at how chelsea and the careers they have affected with players who think they can stay in the first team but are never heard of again.
HOW MUCH IS FABREGAS WORTH????
FLAMINI?????
ADEBOY?????
EDUARDO????
NOT MUCH CHANGE OUT OF 100 MILL.
FABREGAS WORTH HALF THAT ON HIS OWN
Spot on Top LWC we got stiched by Barca they didn’t pay for Overmars or Petit so we took him for £FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND How much did you pay for Bent?
WALCOTT????? EVEN WENGER ADMITS HE IS CRAP AND NOT WHERE HE SHOULD BE…….?
Flamini is on a free transfer in the summer, but you know all about those (Sol double Cambell) How much was Bent?
First of all- congrats to the spud cunts- they deserved it over the two legs.
It seemed our main problem was that our defense was weak and there defense was strong. With Gilberto completely losing his head and not covering for the inexperiecned Traore and Hoyte we had no real chance of not letting in at least five.
Walcott needs to grow some balls- he wants to play on the centre- so he is given the opportunity and flops- please improve Theo- we need you for the future
Diaby- Used to believe he was the new Vieira- now he is selfish and seems that he has caught the “Diarra” virus (becoming a cunt)- i hope this is no the case and Wenger sorts him out. However if he leaves, Gilberto leaves, Diarra (already left) and maybe even Flamini leaves we are officially fucked in the centre of midfield
Bendtner- I personally feel he didn’t have a bad game- I would love to know what happened between him and Gallas if anybody knows
Traore- too much pressure finally paid off but we all know he will is an amazing talent
Apart from that the only real worry and for me, the worst bit about tonight’s performance was 100% the rift between the players. As we all know the most important thing about losing is how you bounce back- we are notoriously bad at bouncing back and if there is any trouble in our publicly solid camp then we could be in serious trouble
Saturday is now a huge game- please do not fuck it up like we did against Blackburn last year- we are better then Newcastle and should beat them twice. If anyone knows anymore info on the fight then it would be greatly appreciated- come on you gooners
Oh by the way Spurs- YOU ARE ALL CUNTS (appropriate i feel)
(Over 9 years)
Arsenal 22-1 Spurs-Wins
Oh baby 5-1! LWCs are gonna hold on to that win forever. OMG every time we play them their gona be singing 5-1! 5-1! We finally beat the gonners 5-1! How absolutely pathetic. Go support a real club.
Listen to you! This is great. In fact I’ll probably say little as it’ll be more than enough. I think the problem may have been born with wenger feigning injuries so that he can bring in gallas and gilberto (who were both great by the way) so the youngsters even though your best player was on the pitch for 80minutes were bricking it! Classic! Thats 270 mintutes we have killed you for 1 win, one draw and one loss and the December loss which I actually believed that we played better in you had a full team out and we were playing with half a 1st side. Say no more say no more. 3 games – definitely the upper hand? I can see a trend occurring here? ha ha ha hah ha ha ha ah ha splitters
It doesn’t bother me that you lot put out a “weak” team because all it really says is that you team doesn’t not have enough quality to compete in all competitions. Juande Ramos was the one who had the sense to put an adequate game plan together to dispose of your team efficiently. Wenger on the other hand …well i’m not really sure what his game plan was …did he even have one?? He looked lost for most of that game and the players didn’t look much different. High praise has to go to the Tottenham team they have been playing some really attractive football recently and they deserve a result like this to boast.
Gunner4Life you’ve probably found this by now

Waiting to see some video of the incident.
Also from goodplaya:
“By then Bendtner and Adebayor had clashed. It was not, as TV suggested between Gallas and Bendtner. The captain was merely playing peace-maker.”

Dunno what happened
Deep down it hurts. Like a hard punch in your stomach. You feel the vomit in your mouth.
But I refuse to criticize this team. These things just happen. Remeber 5-1 at San Siro. Did it mean Arsenal are miles ahead of Inter?
No.
These things just happen.
Time to stand behind your team gooners.
I just have a wish this time. I hope we beat Newcastle and pray Totts beat their opponents — and I want them one more time.
I promise revenge will not be sweet for the spurs. and Revenge cannot wait for one season..
Come on gooners, show some more respect for the team that did it for 9 years.
I mean, i know we are all feeling down, but isn’t that what Tott fans have been suffering for 9 fucking years.
I sure am glad which team I support,
As for the Tott supporters who are here to rub it in.
Enjoy it now, idiots coz you sure won’t fancy meeting us anytime soon again. This I promise.
I love it that the Tottenham scum feel the need to comment on here! You sad fucks! I agree with most of the real gooners here – we dont give a fuck, we have bigger fish to fry and will – while you try and stay up this season.
Wenger was right, he is always right, and its good for some first team players to feel the pain of defeat so they come back stronger and wanting to fight – last couple of months we have lost some fo our edge and got a bit complacent, sitting back or not showing enough desire – this will get the whole squad back on track.
We are undoubtely the greatest team of all, and well done to kids for getting this far year after year. I’m sure you will win it next year.
Arsenal get stronger and stronger while Tottenham get weeker and weeker, boosted temporarily by Ramos yes, but overall your still all cunts and always will be – your only proving that but your lame assed comments – we dont fucking care!
22-1, thats the real score.
Its days like yesterday that make me appreciate what 22-1 , 9 years , actually mean to me.
Sometimes we take Arsenal and Arsene for granted.
Why is it that wanky Sp*rs fans come on here and make comments! Closet Gooners?!
Yes, we were outplayed and you Sp*rs deserved to win. I wont make any excuses. Lets just hope we will learn a lesson from this and jog on to the next game.
The way the scum behaved summed them up completely. Chants aimed at Wenger and throwing something at Cesc. Classy fellas.
You aint gonna get another one over us, so enjoy it while it lasts CUNTS!
Oooh to, Oooh to be, Oooh to be a GOONER!
My god Holic the blogs got busy .. I just popped by to hello and find theres pandemonium anyone would have thought spurs had beaten the gooners or something.. Pip must go celebrations to be had effigy burning will be put on hold..
But I agree Gallas’s heart was not in it ..As for the so called young ones only three on the field that do not find a spot in the first team.. Everyone was getting a little bored with the REG New side show… Was that spurs I saw defending last night NEVER!!!! Mirage!!
well played spurs, i thought the peadophile chants were a little ott but hey, it’s not like we don’t call your manager’s mother a whore 😉
let them chant 5-1 all they like, it’ll be all they have for years to come.
I’m hurting ‘holic!
Let the lasagna lovers enjoy this for a while. To give credit where it’s due, they did win it (I’m bitting down on a horsebit as I type this). They’ll be singing 5-1, sure. And they can also sing ninety-nine, two thousand and eight to remember when they actually manage the feat. Twice in nine years? I guess I can learn to stomach that.
The Arsenal!!!
