Tweet Tweet, From Who?

Oct 9th, 2010 by 'holic

The mid point of a fortnight of no real football. Desperate times require desperate measures. A good friend I meet at Arsenal is a native of Dublin, and that your honour is why I watched two League of Ireland matches today.

That of course meant I missed the opportunity to take in Marouane Chamakh’s performance as Morocco won by the only goal in Tanzania. Thankfully cognacgooner was watching and has relayed the worrying news that he was substituted near the end with a possible head injury. Fingers crossed here.

I have to say it was something of a surprise to see while he was playing in that game ‘vrai_chamakh’ (The real Chamakh, oh really!) was also tweeting. Come to think of it though what a cool idea that would be. What a shame it hasn’t been available to past generations of players. Can you imagine some of the tweets?

stevemcmahon “one more minute and that’s the title sown up”

diegomaradonna “Hand of God LOLZ”

roykeane “Alfie, you up for a good kickin’ this after?”

therealchriswaddle “Hope I get a turn. I love taking pelanties, me”

callcollymore “What are the carparks like up there?”

I digress. At least I will be able to see the next best thing to an Arsenal match later when France take on Romania. Although Sagna and Diaby are ‘gone in the fetlock’, Clichy could come in for the suspended Evra, and it looks certain that Samir Nasri will have an important part to play in the game.

Nasri is on fire this season, and rapidly becoming a big favourite of mine. The new French coach, Laurent Blanc, has been singing his praises this week. Like all of us I will be hoping that he not only continues that rich vein of form, but also avoids some of the more ‘enthusiastic’ Romanian tacklers.

Any More Memories Out There?

I really enjoyed sharing Clive’s recollections with you the other day, and it seems as though the feeling was mutual. If you have great memories of an Arsenal match, or maybe a player, then get punching those keys and forward them to gooneratgoonerholicdotcom.

And yes, more than one person has asked for a BtM special, if you are reading sir!

Enjoy what remains of the weekend, ‘holics. Cheers.

More internationals just leaves me with that sinking feeling.

If Nasri is fast becoming a favourite with Laurent Blanc, I just want to say feck off Laurent Blanc.

As for Chamakh, say it ain’t so Joe?

  8. on 09 Oct 2010 at 8:46 pm8Matt

@zico: we’ve been blessed with Domenech but it’s not like we could count on France to pick donkeys forever. As long as they don’t come back injured, it’s fine.
And I won’t mind if Nasri becomes the french Cesc this season considering the uncertainty around the original’s future…

  9. on 09 Oct 2010 at 8:50 pm9Goonerholic

0-0 at half-time, but Clichy playing well, and Nasri outstanding.

  10. on 09 Oct 2010 at 8:53 pm10zicoinexile

Matt, I hear what you’re saying but if history tells us anything it is that we will end international weekends with more injured players than we started with and we already have enough of them to make a whole team!

    I need a drink – anything that isn’t French πŸ˜‰

  16. on 09 Oct 2010 at 9:59 pm16Nicky

Chamakh is the first of our new injury list which is not at all surprising. Afterall, if Fabregas, Van Persie, Walcott and Vermaelen are poised to return, on the law of averages and historical convention it must be that 4 first- teamers (at least) will replace them on the sick list.

  17. on 09 Oct 2010 at 10:05 pm17Goonerholic

2-0, all over. Well done France. Luxembourg next for them.

Sneaky ‘holic starting a new blog like that so Ill repeat my last

Watched France v Roumania, most of, on french tv with commentary from AW and others

Nasri worked hard, but the French finishing was poor – Malouda who?

I did wonder at the end whether AW would (or should) comment on the horrible things Gael was doing apparently in the name of defence, and in AWs shoes I would be looking to Gibb as my left back for our next game, but they ran out of time before a post match summary

  19. on 10 Oct 2010 at 12:03 am19behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Speaking of the Rev. Al Green, why did he and Little Richard become reverends anyway? A sense of guilt of so much SIN committed? Sin, Sin, Sin I say. By the way, do you think they were “good” reverends?

  20. on 10 Oct 2010 at 1:20 am20Trev

Congrats on retaining 4th place – where have I heard that before ?

On subject of favourite goals, memories etc., I commend the honorable Arseblog to the house. I know you never mind a pointer in his direction ‘Holic, and for those who may not have seen it, he has included at the end of today’s post, a video collection of the greatest goals and assists of Sir Robert Pires.

It is a thing of beauty – required viewing for all Gooners.

Is it not interesting how, suddenly, there are calls for action on dangerous tackles. Thus far, our media have dismissed AW’s repeated calls for action to be taken on this matter, as the excuses and moaning of one of those “don’t like it up ’em” foreigners.

After Dan Smith’s, Martin Taylor’s and Ryan Shawcross’ efforts went virtually unpunished, one of those other foreigners, namely Nigel de Jong, has now committed a similar offence, and criticism is raining down from all quarters.

Once again Arsene Wenger is 2 years ahead of the more neanderthal representatives of our game and media.

Wenger, Allardyce, Brown, Pulis, McCarthy – how can a single species provide such diversity ?

Fair play to Danny Murphy, who has shown more courage than all of the above player’s and managers put together.
And a word for van Marwijk who at least did something to show his disapproval, even if it was jumped on – metaphorically of course – by the equally dislikeable van Bommel.

Fingers crossed for the safe return of all our boys.

  21. on 10 Oct 2010 at 3:52 am21behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Didn’t mean to scare anybody with that sin rant, but just to come over as friendlier I’ll take a pint of bitter please barman … Thanks Trev for the pointer to Arseblog’s link to the Pires highlight reel. Very impressive indeed!

  22. on 10 Oct 2010 at 8:17 am22Sajit

Looks like Jack is going to play for England seniors and with our luck he is going to come back crocked.

If Chamakh is injured , it means , Vela is going to lead the attack, and I have a sinking feeling about it.

Some interesting stats provided by Little Dutch on Vital said that our real weakness has not been our defence but our attack which has been hugely wasteful so far – and without Chamakh its going to be toothless, till the main men come back.

  23. on 10 Oct 2010 at 9:37 am23cognacgooner

Please dont think Chamikh’s injury was bad , since he came off the field normally and wasnt at all groggy, I suspect they were putting fresh legs on in the defence for last few minutes

    lets hope so anyway

Hello Holics! Trev, nice points. I’m just glad some attention seems to be accurately directed these days. I’m also glad Nasri’s stepping into his game- now let’s have more of that Porto stuff he was on!

Eh, Is Walcott ready to slide back in on the right?

May I have a Margarita, barman?

  29. on 11 Oct 2010 at 4:55 pm29Hussain

Oh great, lets get the club buzzing then ..
We expect Fabregas and Nicky Bendtner to be fit by the end of this break, and guess what we have already lost two, Sagna and Chamakh, lets hope Chamakh’s injury is not serious though, i seriously want to see Chamakh and Nicky leading the attacking with Fabregas and Arshavin, i think that would be calamity for any defense.
Lets hope it all works well though ..
Eboue can slot in well inplace of Sagna though, just for now

  30. on 11 Oct 2010 at 5:00 pm30Hussain

and by the way, any news on how Tommy V is doing ?
As soon as we get a backup, our first teamers start getting non-existent .

Im craving for some Arsenal Talk ! πŸ™

  31. on 11 Oct 2010 at 7:08 pm31behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Hussain, Can’t remember what my source was but it said Walcott has a chance for this weekend but Bendtner definitely not. Fabregas sounded like an almost definite yes.

  32. on 11 Oct 2010 at 7:12 pm32Hussain

    some great news then finally!
Theo and Fabregas, RVP Nicky and Tommy V to follow soon hopefully!
by the way did you hear about Barca’s interest in Denilson ? that guy can surely crack it in La Liga, i want to keep him though, hes more than handy .
Lets see him become our Alonso this season!

  33. on 11 Oct 2010 at 9:20 pm33behind the 8 ball but not nasri

    Hussain,

Denilson has been steadily improving and admirably consistent in the quality of his play. Given continued application I can see him having a regular place in our team for years, but I can’t see that a move to Barcelona would be a good career move for him considering that Fabregas can’t win a place in the Spain side due to Iniesta and Xavi and the same situation would almost definitely be replicated were he (or Denilson) to move to Barcelona. His offensive skills will improve steadily also, and we have seen glimpses of that already.

  34. on 11 Oct 2010 at 9:41 pm34Chippy

    Evening All,
Holic I’ve sent you an email which may be of interest if not your more than welcome to press delete πŸ˜‰

I’d carry Denilson to Barca if it meant hanging onto cesc πŸ˜‰ The story was from As wasn’t it? If so they are about as reliable as Tottenham league triumphs they normally hit the mark every 50 years – throw enough shit and oneday some will stick πŸ™‚

  35. on 11 Oct 2010 at 9:48 pm35Hussain

I totally agree with you Bt8Bnn

But I also read that Barcelona seem to lacking depth in their midfields and do not have decent cover ups for Xavi, Sergio. And i think thats a fact and considering that even one of their midfielders gets injured, Denilson and Fabregas both will get their playing time for sure, and this season that is exactly where Barca will struggle and thats why not much people believe that they can challenge for CL or La Liga for that matter, Real have Jose this season. And even in the strike force, Bojan is not a cover for Messi, Villa, is he ?

As far Denilson’s importance for us is concerned I think he is going to be a key player for us in the seasons to come, Song, Wilshere, Ramsey, Denilson himself, Nasri, Rosicky, Arshavin will be more than enough to provide our strikers with that killer pass, we are just going to miss Fabregas as a Leader than as a player. But we surely do need him for this season though, Ramsey and Wilshere can start a new era in Arsenal history from next season onwards!

I wouldnt mind getting Marcos Senna at this stage of his career, he is going to be more than handy for us in the midfield in the last 20-30 minutes when we are leading, he can provide us with those Leadership skills and huge experience that he has and besides he will come for real cheap, and will be a huge benefit for us in the developments of Nasri, Wilshere, Ramsey and Denilson too.

  36. on 11 Oct 2010 at 9:49 pm36Hussain

Man i just want to keep writing lol!

  37. on 11 Oct 2010 at 9:57 pm37behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Denilson can be very important this year and should be expected to play a big role. He didn’t get off to a flying start due to injury, but will need to start playing more regularly soon. I’m not sure whether Diaby is fit right now, but Cesc is the one we really need to get us back on track. If Alex Macleish expects to replicate the Sunderland and WBA games it should be rather more difficult given the revenge minded attitude the players should have as well as the expected presence of Cesc on the pitch.

  38. on 11 Oct 2010 at 9:58 pm38behind the 8 ball but not nasri

I also like the idea of bringing in Marcos Senna for a cameo role. What a player.

  39. on 11 Oct 2010 at 10:01 pm39behind the 8 ball but not nasri

The amount of international football is insane! Particularly living here in the States, I might add, where my interest in all matches is strictly neutral (‘cept Chile, of course!)

Holic, maybe next interlull you might consider a little primer on how FIFA works for us ignorants and how it is that Sepp Blatter can rule the world for generations. (FIFA has more member nations than the UN I learned.)

A quick aside: any one out there convinced Diaby’s going to have a breakout season ever? That guy is oozing with skill but seems like he can’t string four good matches together to save his life!

Guinness please, kind ‘Holic, if the tap ain’t dry.

Went to the Brazil v Ukraine game last night – do not ask why.

Came away thinking I now know how they do it.

First touch is brilliant. Move for each other. Play one touch/two touch if they can. Press high. Press quickly. Bite in to tackles. Work their socks off (apart from Robinho). A lot of pace in the side.

Then again I guess it is not rocket science.

Would love to seen how Dennilson would have faired. Lucas even looked the part.

  56. on 12 Oct 2010 at 1:22 pm56Hussain

    Pires Is King

I think i have got to agree with you, this season is going to be the making of Denilson, Diaby and Wilshere where as Samir Nasri will fulfill his potential as well hopefully.

Im pretty optimistic about things coming up this season because i think apart from ManC, we have the Best Squad in the Premier League, we at least have decent cover’s for every position
If Drogba, Malouda, Terry suffer an injury, imagine how much of a blow would that be to Chelsea? and we have been playing the whole season without our Spine of Verma, Fabregas and RVP, add to that, Walcott, Nicklas Bendtner and Ramsey

Manchester United, in my opinion, will struggle this season as well. They only have a first team, no decent back ups for any position. Lets see an injury to Nani and Berbatov and see where Manchester United end up.Its just the respect that they get from other clubs that is going to keep them going, even Alex Ferguson himself admitted that they dont have a killer instinct anymore, they have lost Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney is not the same player anymore, Valencia, their second best player last season is also injured, the likes of Anderson, JS Park are nowhere to be found.

Lets just hope it is one of those seasons where a team is destined to win the League, and i hope that team will be Arsenal. Lets make sure we keep Fabregas, Chamakh, Walcott, Verma, Nasri, Wilshere, Arshavin, RVP fit for the rest of the season and i think we will be there in May

  57. on 12 Oct 2010 at 1:25 pm57Hussain

Am I the only one who thinks that without Cesc we don’t have a killer passer in our team that could have passed a killer pass to Chamakh vs. Chelsea.

Nasri is good but not there yet. I don’t see him fulfilling his potential in that area. It was the same against Liverpool, we had tons of possession, crossed a whole lot (Sagna and Clichy HAVE to improve on that) but never got our attacking force in on goal against Reina or Cech.

THAT is the reason we rely on Cesc.

  62. on 13 Oct 2010 at 1:34 am62pires is king

Snir, I have to agree with you on that point. Clearly, Rosicky and Nasri consistently make superb passes, but Cesc’s effectiveness is no short of samurai. Cesc plays like the Godfather- cold, calculating, and effective. With eqully manacured eyebrows- daunting to all opposition no doubt. just look what he did for Spain in his cameos…

Tempranillos all around for our assassin!
