Let's Celebrate A Time Before Lunar Landings, Vietnam, and Colour Television
Nov 16th, 2010 by 'holic
Gareth Bale, now firmly established as the greatest player in the world, is in no doubt about the outcome of Saturday’s North London derby.
“Weβre good enough to beat anybody and weβve shown that in the past.”
One cannot argue with that logic. It is a fair bet that at some point in the last 128 years they probably have recorded a victory against just about everybody they have played. The measure of the test facing Arsenal is abundantly clear.
So we enter what for older Gooners is one of the outstanding weeks of any football season. I hear some of the younger ones querying whether Chelsea should now replace Tottenham in the deepest recesses of our darkest thoughts. No, no, and thrice no. You misunderstand the difference between closest neighbours, and closest rivals, although of course that situation may only last until the Olympics has ended and the Marshmen seek pastures anew in East London. They will then become a total irrelevance.
It is interesting to see the mixed messages sent out around the web. I have been implored not to go on about the game by a handful of people. I can understand where you are coming from. Now understand where I come from. North London. This is more than football. My grandfather and one of my uncles supported Tottenham. One of my cousins supports Tottenham. They do have a select few very decent and reasonable followers.
I grew up in the sixties. They were in the ascendency. It was a horrible decade of constant ribbing. They didn’t stop. It got under the skin. Since then of course the tables have conclusively turned, and it is great to know that every barb has a Lilywhite frothing at the mouth, incandescent with rage. So don’t ask me to let this particular anniversary pass without milking it childishly, mischievously, and to the full.
It is the fiftieth season since Tottenham landed the last of their two (count them, two!) League titles. We should help them celebrate the occasion. I suggested on Twitter last night that in order to remind them of their glory days we should play in a special grey shirt with white sleeves and shorts, and grey socks. That was what the television pictures looked like in those days. Perhaps we should paint the years of their Championship triumphs above blocks 21 and 22. How much is a sample pot of Dulux these days. That would be plenty.
Gareth Bale and his many disciples would claim Tottenham are getting competitive again. All joking aside they have finally achieved the holy grail of Champions League football for a season after surviving a nervy qualifier against some Swiss Young Boys. Injury has robbed them of the weighty problem that is Tom Huddlestone, so they are likely to be at their strongest on Saturday. In the days leading up to the contest expect Robbie Keane to push his face flat to a screen near you to proclaim that they ‘have a stronger bench’, and muttering about a ‘shift in power’.
Then of course there is the boss. Harry Redknapp attracts much praise from English sportswriters, and is even sometimes tipped for the England manager’s post. That logic disregards the fact that, like the two girls in the notorious porn video, he has become famous for lifting only one cup in an otherwise bankrupt career. Portsmouth are still paying the price of that unlikely success today.
Regardless of what happens on Saturday you cannot get away from the simple fact that we are celebrating fifty years of mediocrity of our closest friends and neighbours. They have had the odd triumph in that time, and by the law of averages will enjoy the odd one in the future, but a couple of years hence if they find themselves in Stratford it will all be meaningless anyway. We have to grasp this opportunity to celebrate one of their rare achievements. Sadly though, the beer will cost a lot more than the tuppence a pint it was when last they lifted the principal trophy in English football.

I’ll drink to that post with all certainty. Cheers sir for yet another invigorating post. A good solid ale for this sunny day please!
I can’t believe I was first by the way.
Bronze medal – woo hoo!
In a teasing mood, are we?
Funny post but let’s not forget only Citeh has spent more than Spurs in the last few years (the effects of Arynomics) and they have half a decent team by now. If we turn up focused from beginning to end it will be a great game otherwise they will give us some trouble. Let’s hope Bacary is up for it!
“I hear some of the younger ones querying whether Chelsea should now replace Tottenham in the deepest recesses of our darkest thoughts.”
My flabber has never been so gasted…. ooh missus!
Up Pompeii and up The Arsenal
(Great post ‘Holic – double(entendre)s all round please barman)
The LWC”S don’t need the title, they’re already the European Champions, aren’t they?
Well ‘holics lets wait and see what Bale will say after the final whislte on sunday. What will ‘holic drink to celebrate the 50th univerary then?
Splendid blog tonight, Sir ‘holic.
Glass of Tawny for me please.
As the days advance towards Saturday, I anticipate the blogs and comments will increase in bile and obscenity. That is, if one can go by the past.
Remember, that whether we like it or not, it is still only a game of football, not a war…….THAT is being fought out in Afghanistan, and EVERY DAY. A sobering thought, I hope.
I will never forget the utter, utter joy of 30,000 Gooners at Old Trafford at the FA Cup semi 2001 compounding the Spuds’ agony at defeat by singing ’41 Years, 41 Years’ straight after the final whistle. They could not get out quick enough. Let’s hope for more of the same from 55,000 of us on Saturday.
Nicky
Yes, perspective is essential.
There’s not a hint of bile or obscenity in any of the ‘Holic(s) posts or tweets, just an enormous dose of neighbourly humour that is only offensive if you like to wear Lilly-White.
It’s a hallmark of this blog and generally speaking, all who sail in her. Poifick π
Barman? Whatever Nicky is drinking please and one for yourself of course.
Forgive me Nicky, if I try to find some bile and obscenity above, and its relation to the fantastic work being done by brave others elsewhere. Does the categorisation of ‘tongue in cheek’ not give you any clue as to the nature of the piece?
[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Arsenal FC, Arsenal News. Arsenal News said: Goonerholic | Letβs Celebrate A Time Before Lunar Landings, Vietnam, and Colour Television http://bit.ly/dv4yib […]
He’s got a cheek, he’s got a cheek, goonerholic has got a cheek…
Nicky you must be thirsty, feel free to ask the barman anything you like and send me the bill. What ‘holic wrote had and contain nothing like war. All gunners will like this piece of thought I can bet you need some checking to do otherwise you are in the wrong bar!
For those Gooners ,who like me, can remember the days before commercial television, before jet airliners and before Korea when Tottenham were in the Second Division and the bus went right past White Hart Lane on the way to Highbury, those were the days and nothing much has changed .lol
It`ll be a good match on Sunday, wish I could be there.
Would you be upset if they actually did move to Stratford?
Cheers ‘holic.
Good piece.
There are only 7 men left alive who have won Championship medals with Sp*rs; the youngest is 73 years old. Their last triumph is closer in history to the sinking of the Titanic than it is to the present day. They won 5 trophies in the 1960s, 4 in the 1970s, 3 in the 1980s, 2 in the 1990s, and 1 in the last decade. They might win on Saturday – it’s their cup final and one day they have to get lucky – but it can’t disguise their remorseless decline over the last 50 years from giants of British and European football to sad tw*ts who would regard such a win as the highlight of their season, just like they did last year at the Lane. .
Tuppence a pint, ‘holic? That’s almost as good a price as we can get on here. London Pride, if you will. The one I had the other day was virtually sublime.
Excellent post sir! I am really looking forward to Saturday. Myself and a certain blogger will be landing at 07:45 so plenty of time for a pre match pork feast and some pints of plain at the Tollie.
In the meantime, a Jameson 1780 with some ice please.
Lavelle
Now that’s what I call perspective π
Whatever you’re drinking….
GUYS….you totally misunderstand me. Watch the FUTURE published comments between now and Saturday. They will increase in ferocity as though open warfare has broken out, when, in fact, it’s only a game of footer.
Holic
If your tongue were any firmer in your cheek,it would be down your throat and out your Arse.!!
Which of course is highly appropriate.
Up the Arse.!!
Hoping to see you between eleven and half past, aj. A plain will be waiting if I beat you…
I know everyone is being very polite with ‘Nicky’, who for some reason wants us to start emoting about Afghanistan rather than discussing Arsenal on an Arsenal blog, but – with all due respect – why don’t you p*ss off to the British Army Rumours Service blog if you want to share your angst. They’ll probably tell you to p*ss off as well given most of them would rather be talking about and looking forward to a good derby match this weekend than doing what they have to do out there, and they don’t need a wishy-washy tw*t like you telling them (or us)what we are and aren’t supposed to be talking about. C*ck.
Your point is made Nicky, and we understand totally what you are saying. Though it’s importance pales into insignificance when compared to your reference point, you should understand that this is more than a game to some.
Superb stuff ‘Holic.
And what Lavelle said.
50 Years and never again – bring it on.
Guinness please – (regular) – its cold enough outside,

A survey was taken among Spuds followers after the win against Inter Milan, when they were asked whether they would take a draw at the Emirates or the result against Inter, and 95% said they would take the draw.!!
Do I detect ruffled feathers on the Tottenham side perhaps?
Lavelle @ 19, nice one.
I’ve put you one in. π
Clive knows π
To stray off topic a bit Chelski are definitively at a low point: today it has been announced that Alex and Terry are out for weeks, Lampard for an undisclosed amount of time. With Essien out for another 2 games and Drogba recovering (or not) from malaria they’re up for the taking now and every opposition will try to take advantage.
Win against Spurs and we’ll be on top for a while.
Hurrah! Young Jack withdraws from the England squad. π
Boo! Handsome Bob eyes up a season long contract at Villa π
Matt
Like your logic. Let’s beat the LWCs first, they’ll be as up for it as we are, the rest will hopefully follow.
Must be worth a toast?
Matt, re Lampard the “undisclosed” amount of time he is out sounds readily extendable if we’re a bit lucky. A double toast to beating Sp**s and moving on past Chavski.
re Joe. I hope everyone will read your comment. You have just proved the point I was making.
This is one pilgrimage I’m sorry to miss. Enjoy yourself, ‘holic and may the best team beat the shit out of the cocks.
I have never understood the sentence “it’s just a game”. It’s not just a game, it’s an event that changes lives, moods and actions for weeks ahead.
Up the Arse!
Joe your post in one word was
ELOQUENT
That was an excellent post Holic. Thanks mate.
I have doubted, ocassionally the merits in having such a strong rivalry with the spuds, when the mancs and chavs seemed, to me our sworn enemies. But you are right, it is a LOCAL rivalry, I am a fourth generation Gooner FFS! So i really oughta wash my mouth out for thinking such thoughts.
As you say, they will soon have Leyton Orient as their fiercest rivals, in more ways than one probably!
Pint of baby cham please.
My first visit to Highbury
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/freezeframe-arsenal-2-0-tottenham-1980
I went with a Tottenham supporting mate, and we were in the Clock End. Early in the 2nd half my mate shouted “Come on Spurs” and an elderly guy turned round and said “Shut the fuck up son, this is the decent end of the ground”.
Forgot the drink indeed, it’s a beautiful afternoon here I’ll opt for a Bellini barman if you please.
Holic you are the Man! Top post and I couldn’t agree more…sadly perhaps I will never witness the good old days in my life time I’m sure there is plenty aheas to look forward too!?
Mother in law was kind enough to give me a very swish bottle Zubrowka and I invite all Holics to join me for a shot of this fine Polski spirit! I say bring on the Spuds!
Can’t wait for thid fixture now….Jesus I want total humiliation !
Barman Zubrowka is on me!
Thanks Arthur, Zubrowska it is then.
Matt
You get a double to start with π
Good post ‘holic
It is not personal, its only a game I agree
but can someone give me a link to a closed circuit camera placed just half way down Seven Sisters Road that will be broadcasting the flood of white tears going down the hill at 3pm on Saturday
Come on you Reds -lets show them how to play
Arthur, Zubrowska for Flappy and me too please!
Arthur,
Keep the doubles coming please. How about CL & EPL winners? Now that’s what I call a double. π
For those night-owls amongst you there’s a programme on ESPN Classic at 11:50PM – “Spurs v Arsenal: Rivalries”. That should keep the juices flowing nicely…
I can taste it from here, Arthur. You are a gentleman, thank you. π
Damn, one of those few times I wish I had a telly.
And the Spurs game won’t be on ESPN3 either, let’s hope the feeds won’t be as hard to find as they were for our recent games. The only good news is that the Villa game will be on ESPN3 (http://espn.go.com/espn3/index/_/sport/soccer-futbol). I’m becoming addicted to their TV quality streams…
If you are on windoze Matt then I have found a half decent sopcast stream for most games this season via myp2p.eu
On the Mac I have been most successful on atdhe.net
Good luck.
Matt
The last time Spuds won the Championship, most if us wouldn’t have had a telly – heh!
Perhaps Arthur will be kind enough to keep the Zubrowska flowing to help compensate???
Very nice ‘Holic – admirably restrained !
But wait, Harry (is he actually made of porridge ?) Redknapp not a prudent manager ?
Spot the link – Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, West Ham – yes, all managed by Ol’ Twitchy and every one of them finshed up as near bankrupt as makes no difference.
Just wait ’til he leaves the Spuds to take over the national reins – could get interesting.
Hey Catalan – you in da house ?
Got any thoughts on the John Terry “leg nerve” problem ? – yes, that’s how they described it on the radio at lunch-time, and if that’s as far as they’ve got, I’m glad.
If you have any thoughts, keep them to yourself – there’s a good man.
I’m not sharing mine with anybody – can’t be too careful.
The FA won’t touch him with a bargepole, Trev. Two words. Terry Venables. Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more π
funny post, even i have to admit, but just hoping the team that beat inter turn up to the embarasingly sterile efeminates.
remember mon rouges every dog has its day.! COYS
Arthur, I’d be glad to start my pre-match preparation on a Tuesday and have some of that Polish bottle, thanks mate, and Cheers!
Trev- Couldn’t help but think about your post earlier in the season about how most of the times the “days” injuries turn out to be months (as seen with Rosicky and Vermaelen) and that our evaluation of injuries are a bit off, and having a player get the same injury as a Chelsea player and the Chelsea player returns quicker. Then I saw that both Alex and Terry are out for months and thought to myself – Maybe (just maybe) the tide is turning and it’s their time to suffer an injury filled season?
Each day I read two Arsenal blogs, Goonerholic and Areblog and if those two don’t give me the best possible view of my favourite club nothing can.
Living as I do in the Far East I get back for two or three matches a season and last year I was in town for the Arsenal v. Spuds encounter. I had forgotten the special emotion which is ever present leading up to and of course on the day itself. This naturally leads to the ultimate climax when we beat the buggers.
I have in fact just returned from London where I witnessed our eventual beating of West Ham and then our abysmal performance against Newcastle, who I recall back in the 50s were our nemesis.
Fortunately Woves and Everton raised my spirits.
Holic, this lengthy tirade is to thank you for reminding me of that feeling of “Arsenal v. Spurs” which is special …………. so very very special.
BTW I first became a Gooner in 1953, probably 10 years or so before yourself.
http://www.malaysiangooner.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/spurs.jpg
if we win next Saturday can we have a box set like this one
You’re about right old. Was taken as a nipper, but don’t remember any games before ’63. How lucky am I? Alive for them winning it, but not a hope of remembering. Good to see you here.
ham, I know you boys love it, but for all the wrong reasons. No ‘y’ word here fella, please.
Fair play for engaging though.
Hi Snir – well TV5 is still out with his “small small” Achilles problem but maybe they are starting to get on top of the general situation.
Now Rosicky has returned with the benefit of a proper pre-season he looks a couple of good finishes away from the Rosicky of old.
Djourou finally seems to have established his fitness and is looking like the prospect his physique suggests. Some very good performances from him – and how timely were they.
Am I really daring to say all this – well yes, actually. After the sorry performance against Newcastle, the rest of last week has left everything feeling very positive. It seems a new attitude has grown rapidly within our team.
Hell, let’s really go for it and predict a 3 – 1 triumph for Saturday. That’s assuming, of course, we don’t hit top form !
Whoops, who let the neighbours in?
First Lilly-White alert of the week?
Glad you’ve got a good sense of humour HY – it might just serve you well on Saturday.
May the best team win and they usually do.
sorry dont get the y word thing. we just reclaimed it from you guys. guess its gone full circle and now the goons find it offensive.hehehehe. as greavsey used to say, funny old game. ! or even more crass dont say youve goon all pc. hehe
‘holic, on the day of the 50th anniversary will you have balloons and confetti to go along with the champagne?
Admittedly being under the age of 30 and living in California my reference point of the derby is slightly skewed towards more recent rivalries. I will say though being in the east lower for the game at Highbury in 2006 I have a small insight into the intensity in which said derby is viewed. This side of the pond has birthed a few Spurs fans( god knows why) but provincialism is not in our blood and thus many of the fans float between whomever is doing the best. This however doesn’t detract from the history and the obligation one has as a gooner.
4-0 I say with a brace from Walcott as he skins the Welsh monkey twice.
I remember as a twelve year old in Brighton playing in the fast fading gloom, jumpers as goalposts, my mate Ken (17), a Sp*rs fan, in goal me blasting shots at him as the radio commentary of our final game in ’71 was broadcast. I was in heaven as Kennedy headed the goal and Ken was wrecked.
So wrecked he intentionally broke three of my Arsenal subbuteo team as he tried to gain revenge on the green felt later that night. The lads even won that with baseman scoring.
I really loathe them. Twats.
3-1 for me. Chamakh, Arshavin (2).
Guinness, extra cold, for me please, as it’s fair steaming in New Zealand right now.
Trev – Do you think Terry’s injury is due to returning quicker from injuries than Arsenal players? We always complain that the players get the same injuries and the Chelsea player returns faster, but are we seeing the consequences in that now? From what I understand, Terry had that injury last season and by playing with or not fully recovering from it, it has gotten to a degree where he can’t even have a normal life as he said it bothers him at the dinner table, in bed (with Bridge’s wife?) etc’…
Maybe it was wise after all to have our players come back only when they’re 150% fit (I don’t know, I’d like to hear your opinion about that…)?
Snir
Terry has been playing with a crook back for years,he has pinched nerve roots at L5-S1 and L4-S2 at the bottom of the lower back,
these lead to all the shooting pains, sciatica etc down the legs and often into the feet.
He will have been having regular injections into the damaged areas which have the effect of deadening the area causing him the most problems.
But these unfortunately are only short term, sometimes 3 months sometimes 6 if you are lucky, but in a highly physical contact sport like football he is basically fucked without some form of surgery.
cheers
clive
Impressive knowledge Clive!
Funny how Chelski’s season hinges on one man’s L5-S1’s configuration…
Matt
very true, having sold the crafty rascal Carvahllo to Madrid, they have absolutely no cover for their inspirational Captain.
The Cupboard is indeed Bare.!!
Lansbury in goal for U21s? Alumina is really in trouble now π
Sorry ham, didn’t mean to confuse you. The term you use is offensive to large numbers of supporters of both clubs.
Arseblogger has coined a term for you boys I will always be comfortable with. You will forever be lilywhite cunts to me.
Zubrowka hangover this morning Holics my head was about to explode but thanks to some Lavazza she’s responded very well to some caffeine.
I’m ready to peel some spuds….bring them on! π
‘Holic @ #75
Spot on mate, LWCs indeed!
I really don’t mind if the odd Spud wanders into our bar for some decent banter but the standard I’ve seen has generally been shockingly low.
It’s one thing walking in and leaving your shoes politely at the door but these numpties tend to tread in dogshit as they pound along the wrong end of Seven Sisters Road and then walk it into our fine carpet when they occasionally visit, charming! They wouldn’t notice the smell of course but we do.
Barman? Windows wide open please, a potato peeler and some Ibuprofen for Arthur and a strong coffee for me. Cheers π
Clive,
I thought Chelski were famous for their strong spine?
*Exits stage left amidst groans from fellow ‘Holics*
so sorry to upset your smug geriatric love in, but i must say what a quality blog …. the host very sensitive in whats typed by his subscribers trying very hard not to offend certain sections of the ethnic make up of north london , it a shame that your such a hypocrite gooner holic the whole pc thing is a farce when you use call me a c*nt. i propose you call it a day son .proud to say we have an english manager and could easily field a very good british first team , how many could les rouge field . give it up you two faced mug….c.o.y.s
BRING ON THE BLOODY SPUDDIES!!!
Dear, oh dear, oh dear. What is that nasty, lingering smell??? Did somebody cut the cheese?
hamy*d
You mean a flipin TAX dodger! I’m a bloody football manager hahahaha…
He destroyed Pompey you are next!
Easy boys. Don’t take the hook. Last word ham, sorry to say mate Tottenham fans are not an ethnic subset. You are cunts, pure and simple, and I don’t mind upsetting you in the least. Upsetting friends on both side of the divide because of their colour or religion is just wrong, and was just as wrong when I did indulge in it, so I’ll accept a misdemeanour charge of hypocrisy, backdated.
Good luck with your vision of Jerusalem, fella.
31/10/2010.

proud to say we have an english manager and could easily field a very good british first team
Wernt so proud of good old blighty when them Argie cunts played for you tho were you- Argentina Argentina – round about the time of the falklands wasnt it?
Oh contraire ‘Holic. I believe our interloping friend drew a very interesting parallel between the England and Spuds teams.
Is it a coincidence that neither has won a championship since the 60s?
50 years and never again!
FOYS, COYG!
86. True Storey on 17 Nov 2010 at 11:09 am,
Great comparison..
Chippy,
Like others here, I also grew up in N.London and had too many class-mates who were annoying little Spuddies.
I remember having to put up with the hype surrounding Villa and Ardilles. Even with two world cup winning stars they couldn’t win The League!
Nothing really changes, right?
Has that smell gone yet?
Barman, whatever Chippy’s having and a new Subbuteo team for Willo please π
Morning ‘Holics.
First of all, allow me to say that this has got to be the best Drinks I’ve been to all year. It’s not Saturday yet, but you guys have already set a benchmark. With a few (Ok, many) drinks after the game, it will only get better.
But on this most auspicious of days, allow me to recount a specific “encounter” I had with a very decent Spud a few years back.
I was at the pub with a few mates watching an Arsenal game, possibly againt United, proudly wearing my Van Persie jersey (well, he looked great when he used to play for us, remember?) and screaming away at the ref or at our boys or simply at the screen. It was at that moment that an embarassingly ugly chap chose to mutter something in my general direction. Having heard only the last few words he uttered I asked him to repeat what he had just said. To which he replied that he simply said that we were too weak to win the league. I asked him which team he supported then (thinking that only a Chav would be allowed to have the cheek to say something about winning the Title), he responded by saying that he was a Totte*am fan. My instant reaction was a healthy “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA” to which I added something along the lines of “Well that’s rich, coming from a spurs fan, HAHAHAHAHA”.
You could see the bitterness and bile building up and making his already less-than-agreeable exterior even more disturbing.
His only retort was a “Arsene Wenger is a paedophile”, to which I courteously responded by asking him how he knew that, and enquiring of him whether le Boss had touched him in places when he was younger. It was then that my 2 (non- Arsenal supporting) mates bursted out laughing.
The Sp*d didn’t take kindly to having his childhood well-being questioned and attempted to intimidate me by questioning my sexual orientation. I know I shouldn’t have responded but the ridiculousness of the situation (and the few pints I had) really registered, and I responded that seeing him, no human being, man or woman, would ever want to fuck him.
He pushed me and while i was still laughing at what I had said (I was hammered ) and before I realized that he had pushed me my two mates were on him and the the owner basically told him to fuck off and never come back again.
I’ve never met the gentleman again, but just thought i’d share this with you ‘holics.
As for the game, I always have one wish: I hope that at the 90th minute, and after a good thumping, we obtain a penalty, which will be converted by our goalie (Flappy in this case)! That would really really make it memorable.
TS,
A lunchtime pint sounds good to me fella cheers, Nope nothing changes with that lot they are still shit and will forever be in our shadow,
And soon hopefully they will fuck off to stratford and leave North London to its most succesful club,
They do make me giggle such a patriotic little band when it suits but you only have to go back 30 years to see how patriotic they actually were.
And as for Chas and Dave weve got the Sex Pistols sums it all up lol, Ill never tire of seeing us smash them and if we do it in style it rankles them even more π
Up The Arse,
RVP’s right foot
Thats a good one mate! That was one rotten SPUD π
Sorry should have added to our friend – do you not see the Irony in your username π
Spotters badge for chippy, classic mate π
Talking of The Chippy, who remembers that wonderful 5-0 Xmas thrashing we gave them in the 70s at Shite Hart Lane? Has there ever been a better Crimble present?
You mean this one mate !!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RDDQ2Uz8Ts
That’s the one, wonderful memories. Cheers.
Weve had plenty of those at the lane down the years π Havent we won the title more times at their ground than they have – If thats not the biggest pisstake going i dont know what is π
High guys just got out of a meeting. We’ve just moved buildings and it’s a little hectic. But we need the 3 points on Saturday.
They have RVDV and GB making noise at the moment. Other than that they’re still the same old spuds.
I agree they do act hostile towards us whereas we tend to humour them.
Is it a class thing? Well maybe in terms of club superiority. But I’m not sure whether it reflects individual supporters.
Ultimately be it a Spud or a Chav they all need eliminating….Exterminate!!
Clive, are you Terry’s radiologist?
Any way you can zap him with a little excess radiation?
Now they’ve called in the Italian neurologists (that sounds like a nervy group!) to diagnose Terry’s injury, see http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/c/chelsea/9199147.stm
I can just imagine the conversation: “Mamma mia, I just severed his spinal nerve”
‘Holic you got me at the tittle. Best you’ve got so far i think….(you may all correct me now – meh)
Where i come from they don’t know if the sp*dies exist – weird i know. They aren’t even considered any threat these parts of the world by any Arsenal fan. They are classified in the category of the West Hams and the like.
Am sure all along they’ve been thinking how important they are, the insignificant lot.
Rum is growing on me, and i wouldn’t mind +coke
Ette
Make that spiced RUM π and coke
“Woman goes to doctor ”Everytime i have sex a big gush of wind comes out of my fanny and it sounds like it’s saying ‘Spurs are a top4 side”. Doctor says ”it’s quite normal, a lot of cunts say that.”
π Hahahahaaaaaaa π
Hey Trev!
Haven’t been in the pub for a while…. Man Flu is a truly dangerous disease!
I have plenty of thoughts on how to solve Terry’s problem, but buggered if I’m going to phone up Dr English and let him know! He’s actually a friend of a friend, but if the summons ever came I think I’d refuse on principle.
R
‘holic, the black and white commerative kit is fabulous. Could try adding one of those Che berets but it would just look grey on the telly.
ATG –
Hahahahahahahahaahahahaahaha!
Keep em coming!
Hi holic and holics.
It will be stating the obvious but as nobody has mentioned it I will leave you with my favourite barb when discussing our club with a spud.
We have won the league at the lane (twice) as many times as they have. It never fails to bring out the neanderthal in them.
Afternoon all,
Well, that nasty pong seems to have gone for now. Wonder when the next offending whiff will turn up?
What’s the thoughts on Big Bad Billy G’s return to the home of football? Total indifference will probably be the best reaction to that trouble-maker, assuming he’s playing of course.
Here’s a re-run of a couple of links that should help to raise the humour level (warning, not to be listened to in the presence of children):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLHDzqTKajM
http://arsenal-opinion.com/2010/08/31/a-typical-conversation-with-a-spurs-fan/
Barkeeper? Early drinks all round please, thanks π
With the birth of the internet and the PL going global, the NLD seems to have lost a little of it’s bite, but not to those of us who hail from the vicinity of the Sevensisters Road, for us, this game is the one. It’s all about local prise and bragging rights. I remember literaly floating on a cloud to school/work after a vtctory, yet dreading to show my face after a loss (thankfully the latter didn’t occur too often)
The Spuds are getting better, not that difficult, they’ve been shit for years, good for them that they qualified for the CL, what they seem to forget though was that they managed to get to fourth in the league in a season were they had no distractions, they weren’t even in the Europless League, lets see if they can do it again this season??
I’ll admit they now pocess a few decent players, but take away Rafael Fanny Fart and Gareth Balls and the rest are just average. Peter Crouch reminds me of Timmy from South Park (http://i45.tinypic.com/o9qxiv.jpg) and Robbie Keane is, well…….. Robbie Keane.
To the visitor claiming the xenophobic “our manager is English” argument, a quick check of who was called up for England for tonights friendly will show that Arsenal had 3 players called up (Gibbs, Wilshire and Walcott) yet the Spuds have only one (Timmy), but of course you are the bigger club. Why let facts get in the way of a good argument?
Bring it on!!!!!
A pint of Cider for me please sir and a glass of warm soapy water for the window lickers.
Cheers.
TS – I absolutely despise Gallas with all my heart. Not only is he a trouble maker, he’s a shit defender as well. Our center of defense looks so (!!!) much better this year with our number two and three CB’s as opposed to Tommy V and that CUNT!!!
Plus, you see the happiness Samir plays with this season as opposed to last season when he went a whole season without talking to one of his team mates!
Sorry, but can’t be indifferent to that prick.
Snir,
Fair enough, good to hear your views. I don’t miss him either and more importantly, neither does the team.
I think he would enjoy playing the party villain, just like that other monumental prick, Adebaye-whore. Hence indifference might upset him more and is more likely to put him off his game. I guess we have bigger fish to fry.
So long as we contain Galen (a.k.a. Bale) and Fanny-Fart then we should be on for a decent home victory and prevent them making yet another bleeedin’ DVD.
Roll on Saturday π
Captivating post, ‘Holic. Evokes the true spirit of North London fandom and a different era.
A glass of your ’61 claret would seem to be in order.
That would be very tasty indeed, Ned. Cheers π
So far France is playing like Arsenal while England is playing like England…
It is cringeworthy, Matt. France have completely controlled the game.
Muss less cringeworthy than the Domenech years for France if I may say so.
Nasri and Sagna the best players on the pitch tonight but it’s a shame they have played for so long.
Fabianski had a really good game as well Poland 3:1 Ivory Coast, made three or four really good saves again and good on him. Looked very confident going for the ball too, Eboue on the other hand didn’t look so great.
Barman any spud wedges in the bar?
Nasri was playing so well it looked like he had the ball attached to his feet like a yoyo. Arthur, Was Eboue in goal for Ivory Coast?
‘Holic @ 75 – very funny. And good to see that the visiting Spuds are sharp enough to pick up on a bit of irony.
Can’t wait for Saturday now – roasted Spuds for lunch anyone ?
Snir @ 75 – obviously can’t say anything with any certainty about Terry’s injury, other than that it does sound quite serious.
If it was just a muscle injury you have to assume that in the time available since last season they would have fixed it.
It could be muscle cramping in an attempt to protect a damaged disc (implied by the “leg nerve” pain), or it could be a weakened disc being compressed in certain positions. As it gets weaker, the space will narrow and it will tend to happen more often and take longer to recover.
This is clearly all speculation, but it doesn’t sound like something that is going to clear up quickly to me.
It’s not very professional, but I can’t help but be a tiny bit pleased !
Quite a lot pleased actually.
On subject of Chavs injuries, maybe it was even worth having Alex score against us at the bus stop.
Seems he kicked the ball so bleeding hard he’s knackered his groin and his knee for months. Twat.
Trev, maybe not professional but certainly in order!
@ 89 RvP
Just to prove Holics assessment of LWC’s as absolutely correct.
They are all cunts. π
102 Arthur… hahahaha nice one π
“Arsenal go top” Sounds real good lads eh? C’mon you gooners π
I hope to see this lineup
Fab
Sagna Squallic Djourou Glichy
Song
Rosicky Capt Fab Asharvin
Nasir
Chamkah
Sagna is vital to stop Bale
Djourou excellent in heading is chosen becos Crouch is very likely to play
Song to counter VDV/Modric
Capt Fab as usual with a free role
Asharvin tricky is impt
Rosicky or Walcott , I prefer Rosicky as Walcott is better as an impact player
And now the most important piece of lineup is Nasir. He simply has to play as a supporting striker / CAM. He is simply brilliant now with his speed, ball control and tricky. He will force Modric and VDV to think twice before moving forward.
Zenga- i reckon Sagna is improving as the season progresses and his goal last week can only give him confidence. He had a good game against En-ga-lund last night too!
Trev- I had baked spuds with a little spicy coating the other day and I must admit I destroyed the little buggers to smithereens!
Kill em Aaaarggggh!
Sorry!
Spud joke time:
Four surgeons are taking a tea break:
First surgeon says, “Accountants are the best to operate on because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.”
Second surgeon says, “Nope, librarians are the best. Everything inside them is in alphabetical order.”
Third surgeon says, “Well you should try electricians. Everything inside them is colour coded.”
Fourth surgeon says, “I prefer Tottenham fans. They’re heartless, spineless, gutless, and their heads and arses are interchangeable.”
Enjoy your day holics!
Zenga,
Nice line up but im not sure we could get away with playing 12 π
One day closer to the annual Spurs dismantling !!
Me Bad, i carnt count π sorry Zenga !!
lol np porkchippy. Must be having too much meat π
Arthur, HAHAHA and this one was even a bit more tasteful! Come on Arsenal!
Why dont you grow up I’ve only read a few lines because I got bored and this pissed me off….
You misunderstand the difference between closest neighbours, and closest rivals, although of course that situation may only last until the Olympics has ended and the Marshmen seek pastures anew in East London. They will then become a total irrelevance.
……. closest neighbours becuase you lot cheated your way into the league….then left fucking woolwich and set up shop in Islington…fuck sake its not your patch so we shouldnt be rivals because of that ….. and if you had any brain you’d know that we aint moving to Stratford. Let the cunts at the Boleyn have that dump….we never had any intention of moving there so if you believe that then you are deluded my son.
Good luck saturday though…hope the best team on the day wins and the match is not influenced by a dodgy decision (even if its in out favour cause then we’ll have to listen to you lot moan about it)
Another neanderthal in our midst – get the deoderant out ‘Holics!
It’s not really a north London derby because your not really from north London.
Bam
@ #130 If Tottenham have no intention of moving to the Olympic Stadium then I am truly sorry your executives wasted all the money on all those planning studies. What a monumentally mismanaged flop of an excuse for a team.
Zico….
Dettol Super Spud Killer (kills 99.9 cunts) more like π
Excellent post Sir ‘holic!
F*ck me it absolutely stinks in here!
Have the soon to be ex-neighbours trodden dog-shite into our carpets again?
I see the standard of banter is at the usual level for someone who’s used wearing a cock on their chest.
By all means engage fellas but try to give us something to think/talk about.
Oh Dear, someone from that Middlesex club has got lost in here π
Why oh why did they only get one vote (their own) when they applied to join the League? Everyone hated them even then.
Another good one Arthur!
Listen here Tott-en-ham Hot-Sperms…be gone from our deluxe bumper packed forum. You’re not decent and you’re welcome. You stink! Poo!
By the way two players do not make a squad, you nincompoops!
*unhooks latest specimen*
Boys, off out to dinner. I would be grateful if you would leave the abuse to our neighbours now. Cheers.
Remember,
“it is great to know that every barb has a Lilywhite frothing at the mouth, incandescent with rage.”
π
‘Holic
Message received and understood. I’d hardly count our banter as abuse but it’s your show and don’t particulalry fancy another spell in the naughty corner π
BTW, incandescence and froth makes them red and white all over doesn’t it?
Enjoy your evening and don’t forget to thoroughly was your hands after “unhooking the specimens”.
Cheers and drinks please for ATG, ‘nasri, GT, MtS, Zico and all the other ‘Holics who have been making me laugh these past couple of days.
was = wash, b*ll*cks!
Cheers TS
See you Saturday mate. Looking well good fella so far.
Barman how did these dirty rotten stinking S***s get in? Toast to TS, Goonertown and all Gooners. We’re gonna whup their butts.
Cheers TS – 2 more sleeps till “normal order is resumed” π
Hello everyone. It would appear some people are unclear about what is and isn’t acceptable.
It’s very simple. I don’t want to see people abusing Arsenal supporters in the drinks. It is perfectly possible to argue opposing points of view without resorting to personal attacks.
Similarly, it is perfectly acceptable to use the collective noun ‘cunts’ to refer to Tottenham supporters en masse. In my eyes, and those of many personal friends, it is infinitely more acceptable (and indeed more accurate) than the use of the y word, or indeed any insult that is based on colour or religion. At the end of the day a lot of us have friends and family who have followed the dark side and who understand the wind-up well enough.
As long as you follow these rules we will be fine.
Very clear ‘Holic, thanks for the clarification, nice one. Did you dine well fella? So the collective noun is crystal. Just like you have a pride of lions or a gaggle of geese, there is also a c*nt of Spuds fans – first class! Shall we submit this to Roget’s? π
Zico – “2 more sleeps” – do you have young children per chance? π
Nasri – I’m going to be bold and guess at 3-1 but the old 1-0 with tons of derby controversy will be just as satisfying.
Barman, more drinks please for all ‘Holics, a Grolsch for me, one for yourself and please keep the windows open as there’s still a pale stench of LWC polluting our bar.
Digested a particularly agreeable curry and washed it down with Arkells 2B’s, thanks TS. I am replete.
Preview tomorrow. The ‘holic pound will be bold!
Have we copyrighted the 1-0 scoreline yet? If not, maybe we should do so before Saturday.
Sounds delicious ‘Holic.
Can’t wait for the preview; hope it will contain many more collective nouns for Spuds fans. How about a Twat of Tots for starters?
Fortune tends to favour the bold and brave. I’d like to propose a toast to any kind of performance that produce a win for us on Saturday. Going top, even if only for a few hours, will taste very sweet inded.
Holic
I know where you comig from, there is the joke time and there is understanding and respect to consider, fair play to that I agree.
Hence the jokes I have posted I suppose, they meant no harm to the oppo of that I’m sure and the word of you know what was allowed in the bar I thought it was acceptable. So if it has offended anyone which I think it did then please except my apologies it wasn’t meant to sound the way it did.
Barman some roast spuds skins if you please! π
Come on peeps ….I’m sure this is still allowed Holic?
Three soldiers are captured by the enemy. They are told they will be executed at dawn. One’s an Arsenal fan, and he’s got a plan: “There are many earthquakes in this part of the world. When they’re ready to shoot, I’ll yell, ‘Earthquake!’ They’ll all run for cover, and I’ll run to safety.” So at dawn, they lead him out, and the commander of the firing squad says, “Ready! Aim! … ” And the Arsenal fan yells, “Earthquake!” The squad runs for cover, and the Arsenal fan runs to safety. Now the commander is mad, but he’s still got two prisoners to execute. So he leads the second prisoner out. He’s a West Ham fan, and he thinks, “I can’t yell, ‘Earthquake,’ they’ll get suspicious. I’ve got to yell something else.” The commander says, “Ready! Aim! … ” And the West Ham fan yells, “Tornado!” The squad runs for cover, and the West Ham fan runs to safety. Now the commander is really mad, but he’s still got one prisoner to execute. So he leads the third prisoner out. He’s a Tottenham fan (have I telegraphed this punchline enough yet?), and he thinks, “I can’t yell, ‘Earthquake’ or ‘Tornado,’ they’ll get suspicious. I’ve got to yell something else.” The commander says, “Ready! Aim! … ” And the Tottenham fan yells, “FIRE!”
Good idea nasri, could it be a money-spinner?
No offence here Arthur, only laughter. I’d rather mash ’em than roast ’em π
Heh. Excellent Arthur. And no, you are not causing offence. I have removed the posts in question.
I have JD left here anyone up for a shot or two? My 23″ monitor arrived today fuck me the colours look different he he…
It’s funny enough when you say that I have Cheslki cousin and when I have put a picture on facebook of cashley Cole on a bank note he didn’t speak to me for weeks lol….
Cheers Arthur, make it a double (heavy hand), lots of ice, dash of coke, squeeze of lime. Er…. maybe I should be asking the barman?
I hear Cole got flustered at the thought of being replaced by Gibbs as England’s left back of choice. That made me laugh too π
Mr Goonerholic you have the best Arsenal blog on this planet ….!!!!
If anywone would like to disagree with me then please click on me name he he π
Time to shoot down some Spuds on PS3 here will report later!
Check out Van der Faart’s opinion of the Twitcher’s technical and profound style of management. What a master tactician!
“There are no long and boring speeches about tactics, like I was used to at Real Madrid.
“There is a clipboard in our dressing room but Harry doesn’t write anything on it!
“It’s very relaxed. The gaffer gives us the line-up 20 minutes before we go out to do our warm-up.
“And the only words he speaks to me are ‘You play left or right, work hard, have fun and show the fans your best’.
“Then the defenders get an instruction about who to mark at corners and free-kicks – and that’s it.”

I take it you couldn’t get enough of spanking the spuds on PS3 and are still playing Arthur. To be honest I’d never read arsenaltalk before. I shall add it to my list of arsenal blogs i love. Which of course includes the excellent ‘holic. Where’s the holic pound going this time?
I’ll have some of your jd, cheers arthur
Will only Man U and Chelski online……shame no Spuds π
Bed time now, how the fuck em I gonna wake up for work hehe…..
Night Barman and Holics!
Holic, you need a facebook share button, I would have gladly shared this on facebook.
Top class piss take!
Hail ‘Holic and ‘Holics. Looking forward to annihilating the Spuds tomorrow. Nevertheless, just by analyzing Theo’s performance over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s not a winger and can’t seem to effectively adapt to that role. At times you can see the frustration on him. I think we’ll see his true ability through the middle, but the way our team is set up right now, I just can’t see when he’ll get that opportunity. I really would love to see him play through the middle with another striker as his partner. Food for thought holics. I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter, ‘Holic.
Cranberry and Vodka please Barman!
I have a feeling this is gonna be even easier than the 3-0 at the Emirates last season.
Who the fuck are Spurs?
http://www.arsenal.com/assets/_files/desktops/sep_10/gun__1285139887_2.jpg
love the look in the faces of the spud scums in the background
Snir @ 164
Be careful you don’t get your hopes up too high, just remember our last 4 home games, that alone should bring you down from the clouds quick smart.
The Spuds are a cut above our recent home opposition,so we will need to bring our A game to beat them.
Cheers
Clive
Clive – It will be a whole different ball game. Spurs will think they’re a top side and try to come at us which is a mistake like no other (bar W.B.A which was really an off day by EVERYONE).
Gallas will show the whole world what a shit of a defender he is.
Plus, my feelings are usually right, you can ask fellow holics here π
How about this one?
http://yfrog.com/0578332240j
Snir
i admire the confidence of youth,i truly hope it is not misplaced.
Arthur,
when do you sleep,??
You were blogging on here till near 3am and now you are at it at 7am.!!
let’s hope you don’t fall asleep during the game through lack of sleep and miss all the fun.!!
cheers
clive
Holic- I can’t wait to play the filth tomorrow! All that malarkey towards the end of last season down at WHL needs to be right again. The Cu*ts!
Snir Geuli – I want to see at least another 3-0 pasting, with their best players being shown up for what they really are. Remember twitchy, you can only make three substitutions tomorrow!
49 Unbeaten – That picture cracks me up every time. There’s another one Iβve seen which I think is after the third goal. Those trashy spuds looked…trashed out!
Keep the banter coming lads!
Arrrggggh! (get some nuts, spuds)
Sorry!
Clive is the JD that kept me awake π
I will not miss that game I promise, I have already let management know that from 12:30 on Sat I’m in my own little world.
Holic,
Maybe your next post should explain to our neighbours just how it feels to see your side win a league title at the Lane as they certainly wont have any idea of what it feels like π
More bitter than a brewery that lot,
Arthur
Let’s hope all in Goonerworld will be celebrating around 2.30pm on Sat afternoon.
Clive
I’m falling asleep now my friend and I have meeting to go to as well uurrghhhh π
Joke time Holics:
A man is sitting in a pub with his Jack Russell dog one Saturday afternoon. The football results are coming up on the television in the corner, βLiverpool 2, Tottenham Hotspur 1,β reads the announcer in his normal, rather sedate, voice.
Suddenly the Jack Russell dog jumps up and shouts out, βOh, no, not again.β
The shocked landlord says, βThatβs amazing. Why did he say that when the result was announced that Tottenham lost?β
βBecause heβs a Spurs supporter,β the dogβs owner replies.
The landlord then asked what the dog says when Tottenham win a match, to which the man replied, βI donβt know. Iβve only had him three years.β
@168 ArthurTheGooner
brilliant!
On half day today Holics. I haven’t had time off since time began. I guess a half day isn’t the same but it’s a start!
Arthur- Hahahahahahahaha!
This Derby’s just warming up
