Gunners Are Ram-pant!
Sep 23rd, 2007 by 'holic
I’ve just got time for a few brief thoughts on yesterdays match this morning. The ‘holic pound was well and truly lost. I was sure after a morale boosting win over Newcastle, and inspired by their magnificent surroundings and a sixty thousand crowd, that Derby would prove to be stubborn and obstinate opponents. I was wrong.
Unfortunately for them this Arsenal side looks better each time you see them and yesterday was no exception. It was not just the five goals that delighted, but also the fact that a welcome and deserved hat-trick for Emmanuel Adebayor was supplemented by another two stunning strikes from midfielders.
Naive defending may have contributed to the opener but the right foot rocket that earned Abou Diaby his goal was as good a thump from the edge of the box as you could wish for.
The second goal was all about the pass of a player so hot they must wrap him in asbestos sheets when he gets back in the changing room. Cesc Fabregas played the perfect through ball from his own half to set up Adebayor for a cool finish.
If the Rams thought Arsenal would relax in the second-half they were being awfully optimistic. When Eduardo was tugged in the box the resulting penalty gave Adebayor the chance to firmly stroke his second into the corner.
This would not have been a ‘new Arsenal’ performance without a stunning strike from our other goalscorer supreme! Cesc has spent a few years perfecting his technique on the training ground, giving few sightings of his shooting skills. He has learned well and yesterday, as on at least another zillion occasions since August, his long range missile found the target.
There was still time for Ade to claim the match ball with another magnificent finish. Climbing to control the ball on his chest, as it dropped he reacted quickly to sidefoot a sumptuous fifth.
With Manchester City and Liverpool both held the Gunners extended their advantage at the top of the table, although the Manchester United versus Chelsea clash today should result in a clearer challenger for pole position.
So there we have it. Another broad grinning sort of a Sunday morning awaits. If you are an insomniac you can check out the Hol-Picks page which was updated yesterday. Can I say to all of the new readers who have popped by in the last couple of days as a result of the Usmanov/Schillings fiasco, thanks for coming. I know a number of you have precious little interest in football talk but thanks for taking such a keen interest in, or indeed contributing to, the campaign.

All smiles here too. Can’t say enough about the Arsenal performances so far this season. Everything is clicking, and on this form, Cesc has to be one of the three or four best players in World Football (Sid Lowe of the Guardian mentioned recently that Lionel Messi of Barcelona is in this same kind of form). There’s really not more that we could ask of Cesc, is there? He runs the engine room, pulls the strings, and scores goals. It’s been a wonderful season, so far, for the Arsenal.
We are looking fantastic, superlative performances manifested in goals of the highest calibre.
It’s about time we took our rightful place at the top of the league for the decidedly delicious football we are currently playing.
And other showers of praise of similar magnitude.
