David Faber 1957-2019

Jan 19th, 2020 by 'holic

It is with great sadness that we announce the bereavement of David Faber aka ‘ Goonerholic’, in the early hours of the 25th December 2019.

We are deeply sorry if this comes as a shock to some of you. Our thoughts are with you, who we know will miss him and his words.

We have been overwhelmed and really comforted by the love and respect shown towards Dave and also the kind messages sent to the family. We have enormous respect and gratitude towards Dave’s Arsenal family.

We have recently realised that the opportunity for you to post has been prevented, due to the lack of recent posting and that this may have caused some of you to not be able to keep in touch with one another. So, we hope by posting this you may be able to comment, share and reconnect with each other, which we know Dave would have wanted.

We are not yet sure about the future regarding the Goonerholic blog but we hope it continues in some form, and Dave’s memory and love of Arsenal can be continued.

All our love

As I said on Twitter when the news broke, Dave was an absolute gentleman – I only met him three times in the flesh, but his warmth, generosity of spirit, welcoming nature and memory were striking and noteworthy.

So sad that such a lovely man passed so soon, but you can tell the rare quality of a person that so many from so far afield were touched by him, and that in the last 20 years I never heard an ill word from any quarter.

I hope that whatever led to his passing didn’t leave him in too much lingering pain, and that the fact he touched so many lives can bring you all some comfort at this point in time.

Rest well ‘holic, you’ll be remembered and missed. And thanks again for being so so kind when we first met.

  9. on 19 Jan 2020 at 2:58 pm9Karun

Rest in peace dear ‘holic. Never missed a single blog since the day I learned about it. I’ll continue to visit the blog regardless, in remembrance of the legend!

Thanks, Dave’s family, for your lovely words. I hope you have been able to realise how deeply loved and revered Dave was by members of this community.

A small group of us have well advanced plans for a new/old blog based on keeping Dave’s legacy going. We will only progress with the family’s explicit permission – we would not want to do anything against their wishes.

Whatever happens, we will all miss him terribly.

A proper gentleman, a proper Arsenal man, The Arsenal is a better place because of Dave.

Thanks for the many great times and wonderful memories, Holic.

  14. on 19 Jan 2020 at 3:39 pm14TFG

I had the privilege of chatting to Dave via Twitter, although sadly never the opportunity to meet him.

Dave had the unmistakable qualities of humanity, humility and a wonderful sense of humour, being a knowledgeable and hugely engaging gentleman in the truest meaning; whose humanity and loyalty – both to friends and The Arsenal – were unstinting.

His trips to meet friends in N5 and from beyond seemed to fill him with particular pleasure and it is easy to see why he formed many lasting connections and why his sad passing has been keenly felt with such sorrow across the Arsenal family.

I would like to extend my profound and sincere condolences to all of Dave’s family and friends, whose lives he has clearly touched, deeply and with his accustomed generosity of spirit.

    Rest in peace, Maestro.

All men are dust but a few are gold dust. Dave was truly one of those few. He will be sorely missed but long remembered.

Dave’s blog is a massive legacy and he created a worldwide community of decent souls who were drawn to him through his warmth, generosity and scrupulously honesty that shone through his writing.

Thank you for reopening the blog. The thoughts of Holics everywhere are with Dave’s family at this time. RIP Guvna.

Thank you for the post and update. Thanks for giving us all the opportunity to post again here. RIP Dave. What an amazing blog and
Arsenal community you provided. I never realized how impactful this blog was until you were taken from us. I miss checking in before and after every game for your wise words. May this blog or some form of it
continue as C.100 has suggested. God bless.

It was a privilege knowing you, Dave. You were truly an Arsenal legend in my eyes. A Gooner and a gentleman. Love and strength to your dear family, your friends, and your readers. You are sorely missed. Cheers.

A lorryload of thanks to Dave’s family from the worldwide community of Goonerholics, a good-natured community that Dave created and nurtured over the last decade and more through his wonderful writings. So sorry he is gone but very grateful to know there is a project afoot to continue his legacy.

Thank you for the message, it
was kind and thoughtful of you
to share at such an intensely
    personal moment for his family.
I will always miss the sense of
    decency that Dave provided
    through simply being himself and
    generously sharing those values
    with us.

not much to say that hasn’t been said. maybe this: i never had the pleasure of meeting dave in person, but every email and message exchanged with him felt as though with an old, treasured friend. that was reflected in his posts here at the bar.

he was diamonds, star-dust. i am a better person for having known him.

my condolences to his family, and to those that knew him well. may his memory be a blessing.

A great 10 years in the bar with the inimitable Mr Faber, brought to an untimely end.

A sad sad loss and how horrible for his loved ones that it should happen on Christmas Day.

The world is poorer today for a truly gentle man.

We’ll all miss you for the rest of our Arsenal supporting lives, Dave.

    Sleep peacefully, mate xx

I read Goonerholic every week and read all the comments, Dave always presented a balanced view and steered away from insanity and knee jerk stuff. He will be missed. My condolences and prayers to his family, and respect to all who wish to keep his legacy relevant. I dof my cap sir.

  28. on 19 Jan 2020 at 11:37 pm28arsabeatbarca

We can hear his voice, feel his presence … thank you family for this
opportunity. When feeling down, I would check what songs Dave had lined up on twitter with his often wistful commentary. We saw him reach out countless times, to those who were hurting. On a personal note, I was never more proud of him, when he embraced environmental issues.
Irreplaceable. A legacy of friendship and kindness.

  29. on 20 Jan 2020 at 12:24 am29bathgooner

Dave created a worldwide community in addition to his Arsenal family. This community was based on his love of music and he regularly shared his tastes on Twitter, late in the evening. One of his regular contacts, Ricky Gee has compiled a ‘Holic Hitlist’ from music that Dave shared over the past several months. It’s a superb collection. Here’s a link:

Thank you for this post and opportunity to say a few more words about our friend.

I think I knew Dave, in an online sense and via emails, for about fifteen years and he was always a total gentleman.

In emails, if I had a question, he had the answer.

If I had a problem, he had an ear for it and a word of whatever was required, be it support or advice.

If I wanted to thank him for a wonderful piece of writing, he was always modest almost to the point of bashfulness and thankful for the enjoyment his words gave.

He was always there and now…

He’ll always be missed, by many many people in many many places, but will never be forgotten.

  31. on 20 Jan 2020 at 3:29 pm31North Bank Ned

Thank you for this opportunity to remember the Guv’nor again, though, in truth, we shall never forget him. He was all our better selves. Others have rightly noted his kindness, humanity and wonderful writing: balm for when we were troubled, calm for when we were getting ahead of ourselves. The community he created around his beloved football club and nurtured in word and deed will be his lasting legacy. As C100 notes@10, we shall do our best to honour that forever.

So grateful to the family for giving us all the opportunity to express our sadness at the untimely passing of Dave.
I never met him but had several personal exchanges with him and he was a fine man in all regards and a true gentleman.
I invited him to New Zealand to stay here with us for a holiday and he was keen, but ultimately it never happened.I wish it had.
He created a truly marvelous and remarkable community here and we have all had our lives enriched by our communications and interplay thanks to the Goonerholic
    RIP Dave
Heartfelt condolences to family and friends
It seems really weird that this will be the final post for many of us, but nothing is forever and we should be grateful for what we had.
Apart from the terrible loss of Dave himself I am also going to miss the many intelligent characters that made this place such a wonderful visit.
Adios Amigos! See you on the terraces……..

Dave, I am so grateful I got the chance to meet you. Grateful that you showed me all the time in the world as if I was a long lost friend. I only wish you were still here..

My condolences to the family and friends. I continue to pray for him and for all of you.

I’ll raise yet another glass to your wonderful memory.

impfail@32 (and cynic, and everyone else), check back here occasionally over the coming months. there might be news you’ll want to read, as c1000 @10 above intimates…

especially today, deepest condolences to dave’s partner and family ❤️

  35. on 20 Jan 2020 at 7:30 pm35bathgooner

For Impfail, Cynic and other longstanding regulars of this fine establishment, I think it is worth repeating the points made by CM10 and by scruz, somewhat more explicitly.

A group of some two dozen ‘holics managed to set up a WhatsApp group only hours before the shutter came down on the Drinks on Dave’s own last post (Drink number 4359!). The future of Dave’s site is entirely a matter for his family, and is as yet undecided, as noted in the post above. However in Pangloss’s words this ‘tightknit group of highly motivated ‘holics have been meeting in smoke-filled corners of the internet to honour Dave’s memory and to preserve the traditions of the original bar’.

Thanks to the IT-skills of several, notably ATG, Scruzgooner and Pangloss we have made huge progress and a trial site is close to launch, subject to further discussion with members of Dave’s family.

Should any longstanding regular wish to be involved in the further progress of this project simply follow @countryman100 or myself (@bathgooner) on Twitter and we will take things forward. Otherwise watch this space for an announcement.

Did you know that they make the best acoustic guitars in the world there?
Thanks to all for keeping this boat afloat
I think Dave would have been proud….
Such a shame that people such as Dave don’t hear the high regard they are held in. …. it might be a comfort to his family though
    Still can’t believe it…..

  39. on 21 Jan 2020 at 12:17 am39bathgooner

IF@37 To get you into the WhatsApp group I need to send you a link via text message and you need to have the WhatsApp app. To send that link to you, I need your cell phone number. If we follow each other on Twitter you can securely send me that number by Direct Message. Only Twitter allows secure communication of that cell number between two people who don’t have each others’ cell numbers as far as I know. It might be worth going on Twitter just to get involved in the start up!

I do think Dave would have been chuffed. He would have said, “You’re the mutts!”

  40. on 21 Jan 2020 at 12:21 am40bathgooner

Not heard from cba. He was last seen on here several days before the site shut down for comments. I did try to e-mail him using an e-mail address he shared several years ago but my e-mail to him bounced. Fingers crossed he’s doing OK.

Will we hear from cba again? I do not know, but would dearly love to, despite the insults which he once characterised, with the fear of God in him, as retracted insults. It might be the “absence makes the heart grow fonder effect” but I must confess that I liked reading the fella’s posts and thought his cows moooooooed brilliantly.

Cheers Esso. You too mate. I remember Esso Jnr keeping quiet and trying to work out if I was crazy in a funny way or a scary way!

That was the thing about Dave and the Holics- this place encouraged me to go the extra mile for my club and a group of fans I felt a real affinity with. He created something truly special.

I’m sure that something new will be born out of this bar to carry on Dave’s Arsenal legacy, and I look forward to my next outing in my full GSD gear and with a few other Holics, which will certainly be in Dave’s honour.

I found this site by chance a few years ago and I liked how balanced David’s match reports were. He wasn’t negative nor moany as other Arsenal fan sites are. Just found out about the passing of my old mate, I know he was a major part of the arsenal family but he had Chelsea friends too. He and I worked together at Waitrose back in the day, and I was delighted to have re-established contact with him on Twitter.

Will really miss our twitter chats and would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family. He truly was a top man.

Brendan and family, I’m so sorry to hear about cba. He was a true one-off and I’m gutted he is no longer around.

I also loved how Dave made a space for him in the bar, at a time when online discourse is losing any subtlety it ever had, and let his brand of mischief and mania flourish so that he was a much loved member of our community. The respect and goodwill between him and Dave was special, and I’m sure they are enjoying a long-overdue drink somewhere.

Brendan and family I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. When I started posting on this blog and began to do some away game reports reflecting on the experience of the away supporter going to games, he was marvellously supportive and encouraging. It made me carry on. In many ways I felt I was writing for him.

I would often wake up and check the blog to find a stream of consciousness through the wee small hours. Sometimes outrageous, always lively, he was very much part of the furniture.

I never met him, but I will miss him badly.

Hi Brendan sorry about the loss of your Dad. Am sure he’s only having a deep sleep and would soon be with us again never to part. Never met him but he surely would be missed esp his style of humour.

Am sure Guvna and CBA would have thoroughly enjoyed yesterday’s game. It was a tonic to propel weak souls onto the future. The future is only bright. Onto the next one and surely a win.

Brendan and the family of cba, I am deeply saddened at the passing of your father. He was a man of singular individuality, highly intelligent, blessed with a tremendous sense of humour. Aligned with this he was a contrarian but filled with a great deal of compassion.
His treacle stout and deep knowledge & love of music were legendary. He will be greatly missed by us all. My condolences to your family at this loss.

Have to add my bit about CBA. Loved swapping musical memories with him and we both had an undying love of Wire and the album Pink Flag.

To Brendan and family; many, many condolences. Have lost both my parents now. Life goes on but its never quite the same without them.

A lot of love for Goonerholic David Faber.
    We miss you, David
We wish David family to find peace and happiness and the same to all of you
    From Montreal

  78. on 24 Jan 2020 at 2:06 pm78Joe

My deepest condolences to his family.
I was fortunate enough to have met Dave on a number of match-time occasions and share a few drinks with him and I was all the better for it. His warm consideration and inclusiveness of others (especially those who travelled) was a trait that few people have. He was even better company in person than all the countless hours he spent providing entertainment on this forum. Go n-eírí on bóthar leis.

May I also extend my sincere sympathies to the Scottish contingent on here who regularly attended games with Dave and who must surely be hurting. You know who you are.

A fine send off to a very fine man, Goonerholic was my first real interaction with other Arsenal fans on a blog and I miss coming here and reading the latest posts and it has made me so sad to know there will never be another and that is selfish but I make no apology for it.

This was a nice quiet corner (rip cba aside) where I knew everybody and that everybody would have a respectful view no matter their differences, I never realised just how much I missed this place until we could not post anymore.

The measure of a man is that you notice the void they leave, and both Goonerholic and cba will be leaving a very big void.

Hi there, Depressed. Long time no see, do I remember correctly that you used to be in Compton, Berks, but moved on a couple of years back? Where have you ended up?

  81. on 24 Jan 2020 at 6:23 pm81bt8

    @78 & 79

Joe and depressed. It is wonderful to hear from both of you. I always enjoyed reading your perspectives in the drinks. Virtual bar, real friends.

  82. on 24 Jan 2020 at 8:37 pm82bathgooner

For Impfail, Cynic and other longstanding regulars of this fine establishment, I think it is worth repeating the points made by CM10 and by scruz, somewhat more explicitly.

    Joe@78 & depressedgoooner@79

Countryman100, Pangloss and I managed to set up a WhatsApp group only hours before the shutter came down on the Drinks on Dave’s own last post (Drink number 4359!). We now have some two dozen ‘holic regulars on board and if you join us you will meet up with many old friends.

The future of Dave’s site is entirely a matter for his family, and is as yet undecided, as noted above. However in Pangloss’s words this ‘tightknit group of highly motivated ‘holics have been meeting in smoke-filled corners of the internet to honour Dave’s memory and to preserve the traditions of the original bar’.

Thanks to the IT-skills of ATG, Scruzgooner and Pangloss we have made huge progress and a trial site is now close to launch, subject to further discussion with members of Dave’s family. We also have several willling authors. Since the Leeds FA Cup game we have been posting trial match reports and match previews with ‘Drinks’ in a website with very much the feel of this longstanding establishment. Clearly, we can never reproduce Dave’s wit, wisdom and longstanding and intimate knowledge of The Arsenal’s history but we believe we can preserve his community and legacy. I believe the new site emulates closely the establishment that Dave created not only because of the decor styled on the original but also and mainly, like any ‘bar’ because of the regulars.

Should you or any other longstanding regular wish to be involved in the further progress of this project simply follow @countryman100 or myself (@bathgooner) on Twitter and we will send you a link. Otherwise watch this space for an announcement.

I don’t think this site supports images. Here’s a link to a picture of Dave enjoying a pre-FA Cup Final lunch in 2015. You can crop it to make a nice picture of Dave alone in a jolly moment wearing the 1979 cup winning kit. I did crop it but for some reason the whole picture came up on twitter.

Brendan, you need not feel bad about this. Dave and your Da recognised they were on the same path and talked about its difficulties. This remains a Goonerholic memorial and I am confident that Dave would have been keen to see your Da’s passing and contribution to his Goonerholic site recognised in despatches.

As far as pics of Dave in an Arsenal shirt go, there used to be one of him in a 1970s goalkeeper’s top he’d bought from eBay somewhere, but I can’t recall where. It was posted years ago though.

I have been a fan of the ‘Holic for many years. During the mutinous period of Wenger’s last decade as Manager, you could rely on the ‘Holic to present a measured view devoid of rancor, abuse and disrespect.

I never knew Dave but I felt close to him through the blog. His humility and civility in his writing were quite contagious as they really influenced the tone of discourse in the comments section. This blog has hands-down the most cultured comments section of any Arsenal blog out there and that flowed from the top-Dave.

With tears in my eyes, I come to bid you goodbye Sir Dave. Continue to rest in the bossom of our Lord.

To Dave’s family and friends, take heart. Dave will always live in our hearts.

I’ve not been posting here for as long as some of you. This became one of my go to blogs to discuss all things Arsenal and football related. David was a gentlemen, who had time for people. He was always very articulate and passionate about Arsenal. He let me enter the fantasy football league “The ‘Holic’ YouRopey League” even though I wasn’t a regular poster. May his memory live on. My condolence to his family. R.I.P. David.

I did however manage to find an email Dave had sent me and I believe it included an email address for you (demon.co.uk). So I’ve sent you a note on same. Hopefully you will receive it.

Very sad to read of CBA’s passing as well. Was a joy to find a fellow gooner who also knew the godlike genius of the Ramones

A new website has been developed over the last few weeks by a group of long-standing contributors to the ‘Drinks’ on this Goonerholic site with the aim of preserving Dave’s legacy and the community he created.

The new site is modelled closely on this site and we aim to continue the calm, rational analysis of the Arsenal with regular match previews, match reports and occasional other articles following the prototype established by Dave Faber.

The new site will be launched as a publicly accessible site in the next week or so. The exact launch date and domain name will be announced here shortly. Keep an eye on the ‘Drinks’.

  144. on 29 Feb 2020 at 9:13 pm144Potsticker

Potsticker @145, let me think. ?

There’s been only one Invincible team since the turn of the 19th century. A team they call the Arsenal.

    ? 49, 49 undefeated,
    49, 49 I say,
    49, 49 undefeated,
    Playing football the Arsenal Way!

  147. on 29 Feb 2020 at 10:52 pm147Goonersince54

    Great news Bath
I hope everyone who populates this esteemed site are all keeping well, and like me are looking forward to continuing Dave’s great tradition.
Probably fortuitous that it will be a week or so before it goes live, given the pain of the last few days, with the gut wrenching loss to Olympiakos after extra time on Thursday, and the heartbreaking loss for the Ladies against Chelsea in their league cup final today, having completely outplayed the Blues, despite being without 4 of our best players, conceding in the last minute to go down 2 – 1.
Give us time to let the dust settle, before what could be a very interesting run in.
Will be a good test of Arteta’s management skills, and the players mental strength to see if they can come back from a big setback like Thursday night.

I was more disappointed in the women’s result than Olympiacos. We deserved everything we got on Thursday, as we were abject, but the women dominated Chelsea and the winning goal would have been half a toe offside with VAR (although as I hate VAR, I’m glad it’s not used in the women’s game).

Nobody remotely sane does the Twitter/WhatsApp thing do they?

I’ll keep an eye on here for the new home. I’ll miss the old one badly though.

    OsakaMatt
    Hello to you to,
Hope the Coronavirus hasn’t interrupted your day to day life too much up in Japan.
Weekend complete, with Pool done like a dinner at Vicarage Road, and our friends and neighbors down the road coming a cropper at home against our next opponents in the Europa League if we hadn’t blown it against Olympiakos.

  154. on 02 Mar 2020 at 2:57 pm154bathgooner

    Clive,

A DM on Twitter is the only secure way I know to exchange the mobile numbers we need to get you into the WhatsApp group. I don’t think it’s at all safe to put personal data like mobile numbers or e-mail addresses on a publicly accessible site like this.

Anyway, the work has been done on the new site (props to lots of folks you will recognise, notably ATG, scruz & pangloss), lots of previews, reports and even occasional articles have been written (by multiple authors) and our go live date is close. So we will hopefully ‘see you again’ soon, in the new bar!

  155. on 03 Mar 2020 at 10:42 pm155Goonersince54

Well the sun is still shining, after a downcast week with defeats to Olympicaos at the last gasp of extra time in the EL,and the Ladies last minute loss to Chelsea in the League Cup Final last Saturday.
This week started with a professional win over Portsmouth in the FA Cup on Monday night, with a host of youngsters playing well, and has been added to this evening by our under 23’s winning an absolute thriller 4 – 3 over Monaco to reach the semi final of the Premier League Inter Continental Cup,with no surprises for guessing that we scored the winner in the 93rd minute. !!
Now for the Derby against our East London neighbors the Hammers on Saturday to make it a triple triumph.

Good to hear the U23s won, I feel

    a few seasons back.
Hopefully a mostly rested XI can
stick it to the Hammers this
    weekend.

Eminently winnable game, given we are a far cry from the rabble that lost up there to them last year.
Shame our Neighbors couldn’t join us after going out to bottom of the table Norwich on penalties.
    Countryman,
Will you be making the long trek to the Etihad for the hastily rearranged game against Man City next Wednesday. ??

    Hi Clive

Up to Manchester on a Wednesday night with seven days notice? I think it’s taking the piss and anyway I’m in meetings in London all day. So no I won’t be going. But I will be down by the sea at Brighton the Saturday after.

Epistles? Isn’t that something to do with religion? 🙂

The Women’s FA Cup quarter-final between Arsenal and Tottenham on 15 March will be shown live on the BBC.

The tie, which kicks-off at 12:30 GMT at Borehamwood’s Meadow Park, will be shown on BBC iPlayer and the Red Button.

C1000’s epistle from Brighton (St. Paul to the
    Corinthians? ) will be
in the new site I believe Clive.
Unless all games are behind closed
    doors by then I suppose!

    Daylight robbery at the Ems,
Hammers their own worst enemy this afternoon.
Some of our defending was absolutely comical.
I recommend the Arse go out and buy a 100 lottery tickets, cos with that luck they could win the Lotto and have enough money to buy at the top table in the summer. !!

‘Goonerholics Forever’ has been developed by a worldwide group of regulars from this Goonerholic blog with the aim of preserving Dave Faber’s legacy and the community he established. We were originally brought together through the ‘Drinks’ on this blog and inspired by Dave’s warmth, words, wit and wisdom. In developing this new blog we pay tribute to one of the nicest men that many of us have ever met and we believe that Dave would approve of our attempt to continue his work.

‘Goonerholics Forever’ is modelled closely on Goonerholic and we aim to continue its supportive, congenial environment with calm, rational analysis of the Arsenal through regular match previews, match reports and occasional Arsenal-related articles following the prototype established by Goonerholic.

We welcome visitors old and new. Do come and join the discussion from tomorrow.
