Half-time Ramble
Jun 19th, 2008 by 'holic
It’s no good. I just can’t do it. I am sitting here tonight trying so very hard to build a commitment to the Germans. (You don’t want Ronaldo to get through, do you?) I have to say though, even when they take a surprisingly easy 2-0 advantage, I cannot build the fervour I seek.
At different stages of the tournament I have also tried to get fanatical about Spain, Switzerland, Holland, France, even Croatia. It isn’t happening .
Down the years as I have moved down the M4 I have tried to get behind Reading and Swindon, even some of the non-league sides in the Thames Valley, as a ‘second team’ if you will.
It just doesn’t work. Sorry, England, not even for you. Only one team can give me that buzz. I have too many years and too much history with them. They have, like any number one love, given me enormous pleasure and the occasional heartache.
Roll on August because I need to get on that emotional roller coaster again. I’m a gooner, pure and simple. Nothing else will do.

I totally agree – nothing does it like watching the Arsenal
Well said ‘holic — you speak for many of us in this post. Nothing but the Arsenal will do. Just flipped over the Arsneal TV (couldn’t quite bear to sit through that tit Neville) at halftime and they had the DB10 “Legends” special on (again). I’ve seen it so many times before, but it’s still so great to see it whenever it is on.
Up the Arse …
I can totally agree with you. I live in the US and it’s baseball season, this tournment is filling the gap of not watching Arsenal. I just want the new Arsenal Season to start.
*helps self to a pint of ale*
Cheers ‘holic.
PS: One month ’til pre-season at Underhill kicks off…
i feel exactly the same way, its just not the same watchin internationals, altho sum games in euro 2008 have been awesome, they r just not in the same league as club football, n Arsenal r the best obviously
Agree with you completely! Nonetheless, I’m enjoying rooting for the Dutch because A- they have an Arsenal player in RVP and B-they’re playing attractive Arsenal-like football. Go Holland! At least until the Arsenal are back in action.
what a pointless article
What a pointless comment from wayne.
wayne-
fuck off
thats a bit unfair
I was rooting for Germany because of Jens. He played great and I sure would have liked to see him a few more times last season. Almunia was ok but Jens always commanded the area. He will always be an Arsenal legend.
Woah there boys. Wayne was around on the last article. He has a different sense of humour to some. Remember we cannot see the person when he is typing his comment, chuckling at his comic genius. Take it easy now, ta.
goonerholic sarcasm is the lowest form of it. i resent your comments.
lowest form of wit. of course i meant.
Absolutely. But I do like the dutch. If RVP is to win it, I’d be glad. He is my favorite player. I’m peeved that people slate and reject him. but wait my friends, when he plays 40 games a season (I know few would be smirking reading that), we will see the next “great” player (alongside Messi and Kaka).
RVP? 40 games? Hah. Your having a bubble mate
🙁
Big Scolari might not be that special. His first job will be to get rid of Ferraira he is one big tit.
i rate ferreira, danish gooner. also he isn’t that big, hes actually quite small in frame so your comment is fundamentally incorrect. also he is in fact a human being, so you are also wrong in calling him a ‘tit’. get your facts straight before you make comments, buddy.
place a bet! that has so far worked out for me this tournament! but agree with you that you cant get attached to these games! i was going to do the same thing with plymouth now im at uni there but its not working! i just wanted them promoted so i could watch arsenal on an away game!
Nice post. Can’t wait for August !
July 19th. 29 days to go. Yipee.
aptly said ‘holic..
Mind you, being a neutral does help 🙂 close season..
Absolutely right. You don’t really feel the pain if it isn’t Arsenal.
“pure and simple”
‘Hearsay’ are your second team?
27th drink?
I’d better read your latest piece now, ‘holic.
Good post.
At least nobody’s asking you to talk about it!
I can see exactly where you’re coming from, there’s certain teams you would rather progressed through to the next stage but it’s physically impossible to get behind them as you would the Arsenal. I even drew Romania in a sweepstake at work…did I really care when they crashed out?
No.
The best bit of this tournament has been seeing the look on Ronaldo’s face when Portugal failed to make the grade. And rubbing it in my Mancunian housemates face was even better.
Was it the Tit bit that did it ‘holic?
I don’t think he mentioned the BPL either.i
Wayne! You are a very angry person. Am still rooting for Spain, because of Cesc.. – and some great holidays – but, true; not gonna be crying into my wine when they get beaten.
