Arsenal Venture Into The Unknown

‘So what are you writing now then?’
The management is genuinely interested, which makes it all the more frustrated that I have to confess that I really don’t know.
‘All that football you watch, and you don’t know what to write about Kiev?’
Now I could explain to her that ‘all the football I watch’ is limited to the major leagues, and that the ‘Vyshcha Liha’ sadly does not enjoy widespread coverage, but I am aware that there is a point at which I will lose her if I try to explain that fact.
We are distracted by the award of a penalty on the live broadcast of the reserves match at Portsmouth. Jay Simpson has perhaps got lucky, but he gets up to knock home what proves to be the only goal of the contest. That’s a good three points for the youngsters against an experienced Pompey line-up that includes the likes of Pamarot, Little, Traore, Nugent, and an old Gunners favourite, Kanu.
‘So if you don’t know anything about Kiev how can you decide what to plant the ‘holic pound on then?’
She has a point. I can only go by our dismal record in the former Soviet states. Played four, lost four, including twice in Kiev. Bad runs like that are made to be broken.
There appears to be only one change from the squad that performed so impressively in Lancashire at the weekend. Mexican forward Carlos Vela replaces Kieran Gibbs and that suggests a positive approach is being taken. I have my eye on 2-1 to the Arsenal, available at 8/1 if you shop around.
Before you are tempted to follow my lead I should point out that the ‘holic pound has won as often as Tottenham this season. Let that be a warning to you.
Enjoy the game.
