In The Words Of The Song We Still Do, Just Like Eddie
Oct 18th, 2010 by 'holic
I can’t cope with this at my age! After two long weeks of nothing we are in a cycle of preview, review, preview, review, as the games start to come, in the words of the inimitable Arseblogger, like Aaron Lennon. Thick and fast! What a great wordsmith.
Team news always dominates the start of the eve-of-game press conference. You will be delighted to hear that both Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott are in the squad, but with a very interesting proviso that neither may start. Arsene is fully aware of the intrigue, and rumour-mongering, that will have been prompted by his potentially cautious approach to the skipper’s return.
For what it is worth I think he is considering starting with Cesc on the bench as bringing him back too soon (Villa at home last season anybody?) has been an issue, and one we would not want to see repeated. Further than that I really don’t know if there is anything more behind those comments.
The visit of Shaktar also brings about what will surely be another emotional greeting for a returning favourite. Eduardo will I’m sure get the same treatment as Vieira and Pires before him. Through no fault of his own he didn’t reach anywhere near the heights of those two, but he was one of the best finishers I have seen at the club. he reminded me with his diminutive stature, great pace, and cool finishing of one Joe Baker. (Ask your grandad why we loved him in the early to mid-sixties!)
The Crozilians new team share top-billing in the group with the Gunners, both claiming six points out of six off the other teams in the group. Their UEFA Cup triumph last year hints at a quality yet to be encountered by us in this seasons competition.
As far as the ‘holic pound is concerned, I was told at the pub on Saturday to try a few first goalscorer bets in attempt to break my big fat duck this term. I’m not a lover of that bet. The bookies push it for a reason, but I have noticed Arsene’s comments about Marouane Chamakh making important contributions this season, and the first goal will be important at the Grove I reckon.
Stan James offer a best of 5/1 on the Moroccan getting the opener, which strikes me as a bit skinny, but the big gambles have backfired spectacularly thus far, so I’ll try it. I see Bet Fred are offering a generous tens against Eduardo. I could never punt against us but I suspect that will be a popular topical bet on the day.
Now, to those in the pub before the game, would someone who is going to the Tottenham game buy Boston (the Gooner, not the entire population) a large whiskey, and I will return the favour at the fifty years celebration. All who are going please make a lot of noise. The fans really do make the difference at tight games like this.
And please give the Eduardo song a proper lungful for me.
Centuwian!
Sorry for going completely off at a tangent here, but how many people, like me, thought of this sketch when considering Roy Hodgson announcing his team prior to the Merseyside derby?
In goal, I have picked Weina, then in fwont of him Kywgiakos, Cawwagheh, Skwtel. Are you laughing, Konchesky? You can play then! Now in midfield I want Meiweles, Gewward… Shut up Towwes!
Good job they don’t still have Albert Wiewa!
Cheers ‘holics.

Your best Single Malt please, barman!
which strikes we as a bit skinny
One is impressed by ‘holic’s newly acquires nobility
I’ll join Ollie, need to recover from a too healty week-end for my taste.
Great post Holic, count me among those delighted to get a chance to witness Eduardo’s magic once more.
And massive heh and haha at Woy.
Evenin’ all.
Pint of something apple based, guvnor.
I’ll have a Lemsip please, before I die of the manflu
Thank you sub-ed. It’s been a long time π
Bwilliant, holic, as usual. Woy’s particularly worried about welegation.
I’ve backed 3 1 with Chamack to score anytime. A tasty tickle at 16 to 1 with 365.
Lager Holic.
Evening Holic
re your comments on Fab.
I think the Boss has got more than one eye on the Man City game at the w/end.
With young Jack now suspended,i think Wenger knows how important Fab is re the w/end.
So i am pretty sure he will be on the bench.
Wenger will be hoping that we can win the game comfortably without the need to use him atall,he could be vulnerable for a night game, particularly if it is cold/wet etc.
That gives Fab another 3 full days of training clear before Saturday.
I cannot underestimate the importance of the City game to us,with Chelsea at home to Wolves,we have to get something from the w/end.
Having 3 losses in the league before the end of October, apart from the psychological effect on the players,is not Title winning form,so i am sure AW will be saying a little prayer before he tucks himself into bed tonight, that tomorrows game is won with the minimum of fuss and that Cesc is not required.
Cheers
Clive
Very good point Clive.
I thought Jack was outstanding before that tackle on Saturday, and Arsene didn’t want to leave him out tomorrow after an outstanding performance. It would send out the wrong message perhaps?
A combination of both perhaps.

I agree with Clive re Cesc. Jack will be missed at Citeh because of his industry as much as his artistry. No point in risking Cesc if we are not sure. We could do with Theo coming back and providing some width. We will also need to tighten up at the back.
Still fancy a good win though. I fancy Nasri to shine as he has done in recent games. Have a good feeling about him for tomorrow.
Keep the faith.
That “Life Of Bwian” bit made me snort coffee out my nose. Well done.
i personally want to see arshavin rested/dropped because his current form does not warrant a start. bring him on after 60 if he has to but i would love to see vela get go.
i wouldnt mind seeing bendtner get a full game fitness permitting because chamakh could use a rest, if for nothing more than preservation. he has been brilliant so far, i want him for the whole season.
rosicky and walcott to share the right wing between them resting nasri because again, man city is critical.
denilson, wilshere and song/diaby in midfield.
kibbs, squillaci, djourou and eboue at the back
and fabianski in goal becuase hes done nothing wrong, a successful european night could be just the spark he needs to kick on for the season and displace almunia.
cant wait for the game, i live in australia so i have to tape it and pray i dont find out the score during the day which happens to me all the time π
up the gunners
Welcome back Eddie but no Shocks ta, Donetsk.
Would Woy ever have picked Wonnie Wosenthal ?
welegation? not wowwied…will be wetired by cwismas….
Excited about the match today….I think we’re due a shining performance.
Wilshere completed 65 of 69 passes before going off at the weekend…..
random thoughts…sorry….it’s 11pm here and I’m listening to crickets chirping at the moon
To gooners who are out there today.. Don’t forget to cheer Eduardo.
Miss him.
Good morning ‘Holic & ‘Holics fwom Twue Stowey
Is it weasonable to expect a thwashing of the Ukwanians tonight?
Personally, I’d like to see Cesc get a wun out this evening (sowwy Clive) if only to get his eye in for a second thwashing of the Awabs at Eastlands and BTW, who thinks they’ll be adding Wooney to their paywole at Cwistmas?
I’ve moaned enough in the Dwinks alweady about missing out on a ticket tonight so I’ll settle for watching it on the box in good company and will give a big cheer and wipe a tear away for our dear departed Eddie (I wealise he’s not dead) but hopefully his goal will come when there’s alweady a few on the board for the mighty Arsenal.
Barman? A stwong expwesso if you please. π
…. As for Cesc, he’s not the messiah….
But he has been a vewy naughty boy π
Hail ‘holic and holics. Am I getting carried away or does Wilshire look like he should now be a regular starter when everybody is fit? I think he’s moved ahead of Diaby in the holding role beside Song. This is owing to the fact that he appears to be much more tenacious, industrious and consistent than Diaby in that role. He’s also a better passer and can also dribble which is the only area where Diaby might have a slight advantage. I think our best midfield is now Song – Wilshire – Cesc. I don’t want too much pressure placed on the young man, but in essence I think, if you are good enough you are old enough. Food for thought holics. What are your thoughts on this point ‘Holic?
Imp, I don’t disagree with you on that.
Forgot to order, white hot chocolate please barman!
Hail Impeccable1.
Wishire is fast becoming a phenomenon. He needs time and nurturing, uncle Arsene is the ideal man for that. He’s alweady, nearly our best midfielder bar El Capitaino. Same league as Wosicky and Naswi. A cut above Song, Diaby and Deni IMHO… but what a deep and classy squad we have
As for Wooney, thwo’ him to floor, the Liverpudlian wafscallion!
Morning All,
Going back to the debate from yesterday and the previous day β
The Rooney situation sums up everything about not being able to identify with players these days and why many people are falling out of love with the beautiful game lets get this straight hereβs a player that has been truly abysmal since the end of last season – had an awful World cup hasnβt scored on the pitch since Jesus was walking these green and pleasant lands has been filmed pissed and pissing up walls whilst smoking roll ups and has shagged every whore in Manchester allegedly,
Now what does he expect for these endevours the bench I here you say – oh no not modern day superstars he believes this behaviour warrants a whopping double your money pay deal which he feels hes entitled to – I mean come on this world class superstar thatβs had one very good season (although has been gash at every major finals for his country) and he feels hes worth so much more than 100k a week,
All this in a nutshell is why working class fans are leaving the game in droves,
Donβt get me wrong I have no sympathy for United or there fanbase and its very very funny to read the comments calling him a traitor and once a scouse c##T always a scouse c##t especially after the way he left his boyhood club to join them !! What did they expect, But in the greater scheme of things hes shown madern football up for what it is,
Rant Over
3-0 The Arsenal
Up The Arse,
#modern even# π
@ ‘Holic #22
I had a hunch you couldn’t resist that one π
A vewy, vewy naughty boy indeed…
@ Chippy
Couldn’t agree more. Let’s hope our Jack doesn’t tread the same path.
Possible discussion point or hornets nest: Footballers’ salaries need capping and this change needs to be instigated from within rather than being imposed.
True Storey,
Indeed mate- I dont hold to many fears of him wanting to join his and his dads boyhood club as i carnt see West Ham doing much in the next 15 years π But who knows what might happen in the future.
Totally agree – Its gone way to far in the players favour now and they really need capping whether it will happen or not is a different story the only people that can change it are the clubs themselves but it would need to be acroos the board.
The Full Monty as posted by ‘holic… gweat stuff π
Just the three in midfield 22 impeccable? No room for Nasri RVP Arshavin or Theo?
What two of the above 4 would you pick to support Chamakh then (I’m assuming you mean three up front/wingbacks sort od thing)
Where would you place Rambo when he’s back?
Excellent ‘holic
That’s @23 Impeccable (sowwy)(:-))
Chippy, That’s too much sense all at one time. It boggles the mind!
Bt8bbnn,
When i say capping i mean knee capping π
Well it does seem the Evil Empire is imploding makes a nice change for the headlines not to read Arsenal in crisis – United and Liverpool are royally in the shit and take that mantle π
If they knew as long ago as August it makes you wonder whos been whispering sweet nothings in his ears apart from the brasses of course!
Anyone else enjoying the happenings at Manchester? They have unfairly ruled the Premiership for the last decade and finally their past (debts) is getting back at them..
Hopefully Rooney goes for a paltry sum – with debts , they are going to find it difficult to replace the quality.
Twemendous Goonerholic
I’ll have a large glass of Wioja please
Took the fives on Chamakh. Supplementary silly punt of the night? 5-1 to Arsenal at 80/1. Silly one really, I think it will be tight.
Come on you riproaring π
Sajat, judging by his form this season (and the World Cup), Rooney shouldn’t be too much quality to replace.

Can I just say Nasri is having the makings of an amazing season. So great to see him progressing…..
We’re well on the way towards 5-1, ‘Holic. With the bench we’ve got today we’ll score at least one more, and we tend to let one in as well, don’t we?
Having that said, I love the team we’ve got out on the field at the moment. Cesc is everywhere, Wilshere wants the ball, even if he has to get it from the opposition himself and Song has had a good day as a holding midfielder in addition to his Messi-play (that actually has paid off today!). That plus the fact that we’ve got Rosicky instead of Shava means we’ve got a whole team full of people that never stop running. Lovely to see.
The best pressing I’ve seen from this team in a while, and I really do think it’s down to the players we’ve got out on the pitch. It’s like the first few games with the 4-3-3.
Cesc makes it 3 and nearly breaks the net.
Toby, so right on the closing down tonight. A proper 4-3-3 and we look slick all over the pitch. The most impressive thing is Shaktar set up quite defensively but we’ve still dragged them all over the place.
Lets have fun now
Happy days holics.
Should have gone for the 5-1 to the Arsenal bet , Holic!
Tough dilemna Holic… Wishing for Shaktar to score?
8 mins to go holic and I assume there will be a free bar tonight!!!!!!
Fuck me! Eduardo..5-1.. This match has to be fixed.
This is too good to be true
FT, Well done ‘Holic. I hope you made the punt.
Arsenal 5 – Shakhtar 1 but with Eduardo’s goal the real score is 6-0. I only saw the game from Cesc’s penalty onwards but what a great night.
‘holic does the 5-1 mean it’s free beer tonight?
What a way to break your duck π
5-1 80/1 eduardo with the consolation 1 If guiness done correct score betting oh π
What a way to sign off and say goodbye and what a finish !!! We and him were robbed of ever seeing him reach his full
potential and that’s such a shame cos the boy is a born finisher.
Geat win
Eduardo had to score agin π
Come on you REDS ………………..
Oh dear 5-1 to the Arsenal. π
congrats holic!
Bubbly for everyone bartender if you please!
congrats ‘holic!!
dudu didn’t let us down did he? what a sweet finish!!
while nasri is on his way to end up with a monster of a season.
easy match for the reds, almost perfect for the build up to sunday’s clash with abu dhabi fc.
I have 810 reasons to love Eduardo da Silva, Arsenal’s number nine!
The report tonight may be bollocks, as this bottle of Bushmills is evaporating fast π
Did I mention it was eighties π
Fairytale match indeed. Worth mentioning Djourou had his best match in an age?
And then there’s this….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1oyfG6t2ew
Excellent videos both of you. I saw KJ live just after the release of that song… in the 80s.
Can’t partake now unfortunately, I’ll join the fray later π
from the ridiculous to the sublime – and the ‘holic wins as well
Song -the worst player tonight on either side scores a goal having given the ball away so many times, and then carries on in the same fashion, but credit Djourou for his assist, and all the other work he did
All the tight marking up and down the field that choked them until Eduardo crowned all our goals , but Jacks one was a close second
It was a pleasure to watch , now please please do it again Sunday
‘holic enjoy the day for all you have given us in this blog, and dont let ‘er indoors take it all away
Mine’s a large cool creamy Guinness please barman
Stunning choice, Tim. I should have done that π
Sajit, if the match was fixed how come they didn’t let Eboue and Clichy score?
Congrats on the 810 holic lol π
