Jack You Beauty
Feb 13th, 2011 by 'holic
There are days where everything just falls into place. Things are just right. This was one of those days. My early morning coffee at the station is free. The train is packed, and I get an upgrade to first-class, free. I meet stepson, grandson, and mate and when I go to get them tube tickets I can’t believe my ears. Yes, free. The pre-match pizzas on the Holloway Road are paid for by stepson. I get to the Grove wallet intact!
As we hit the Grove the sun is shining. The end of the Manchester derby is on in the concourse so we watch that. “Can I get you any drinks?” “No thanks grandad, let’s get to our seats”. I’m liking how keen the lads are to see God’s Grove. When the game kicks off so does a freak hailstorm which makes me mighty pleased we are in row 12 and not at the front. We are on our feet almost immediately as Jack rides a challenge and tees up Cesc to score. The joy around the ground turns to astonishment as the goal is disallowed and the free-kick is awarded to us. Please don’t let it be one of those days.
It is the first test of me being able to not scream abuse at referee or opposition in front of the young ones. I just about pass it, although all around is dark muttering. The atmosphere is better than usual for a game against lowly opposition, but not at that awe-inspiring level I had hoped for. Yes, I do hate Tottenham Hotspur, but not as much as when we are playing them, and if I stood up every time I realised it my legs would now be stumps. Get some new songs, please.
Early on Wolves are playing their part in a decent game. Jarvis looks a threat when they try to push on, but always their efforts end up with Doyle going to ground, whether touched or not, as Djourou or Koscielny bring the ball away. As the sun appears again Arsenal step it up a notch. At the hub of everything are Fabregas and Wilshere. The skipper crosses from the right, Robin swings his ‘swinger’, and Arsenal have the lead. I’m delighted to see two lads clapping and smiling.
We mix sublime football with wasteful finishing, but credit also to Hennessey who has the customary blinder for a visiting ‘keeper at the Grove. The industrious Arshavin, Djourou, Fabregas, van Persie, all have chances to extend the advantage. The crowd remains just a little restless and that isn’t helped when a couple of incidents involving Zubar are overlooked by Mr Foy before he is finally carded for assaulting Walcott. A rendition of “You don’t know what you’re doing” always makes the kids smile.
Half-time means hot dogs drain Dad’s wallet of seven quid. I still can’t spend anything. Gunnersaurus fires the free teeshirt high over our heads. I’ll give that big green furball boom boom boom shakalaka boom.
The second half starts as the first ended. The bonus for young eyes is that wave after wave of attacks are now right in front of us and not a hundred yards away. Wilshere captivates old and young alike with a wonderful mazy dribble and lays the goal on a plate for Theo. The gasp of disbelief as he fires wide comes from thousands of throats and is audible. A string of chances fall to Wilshere, Walcott, and Fabregas. Hennessey continues to ride his luck.
All around are now concerned this is one of those days. We need a second goal or Wolves will find an equaliser from somewhere. When it arrives it is Arsenal on the break like they used to in the days of Bergkamp and Henry. The ball moves from right-back to striker in a couple of passes and just seconds elapse before Robin claims his second of the afternoon. The replays suggest more than a hint of offside, but no assistant referee on the planet would be quick enough to keep up with attacks at that speed.
Zubar’s horrendous challenge on van Persie, curiously unpunished, gives us moments of anxiety. Ten goals in seven games means we don’t want the Dutchman to suffer yet another injury at this crucial stage of the season. He returns and our silent prayers are answered. Two to the good, we could bring on the substitutes. The crowd was now entirely good-natured, which was just as well. Bendtner’s first attempt at a trap sends the ball ten yards back to an opponent and sixty thousand people chuckle. I think an afternoon of watching Doyle on his knees has made everybody appreciate the big Dane a lot more. We could do much worse.
The final whistle gives us the opportunity to join the heaving masses in the club shop. At last I get the chance to spend some cash. Two Arsenal footballs, and a little something for the youngest grand’holic back at home relieves me of only a portion of the winnings from the ‘holic pound. I make sure they get back to the station. “So, are you an Arsenal fan now then mate?” He smiles and let’s me hang on the answer. I think I am being played along with!
“You’ll be back here next year”, I tell him. I am not sure Wolves will be. I have seen three worse sides this season, but it is difficult to see who will score goals for them, and rock bottom in February is not a good place to be. Arsenal, on the other hand, continue to build hope and expectation. We now look to be the only viable alternative to Manchester United. For now though it is time to turn our eyes to a much more mouth-watering contest. Barca await, but this time we are missing only a couple of players. And we have little Jack. Bring it on.
And just to cap the day, on the train back home I get, yes, another free upgrade to first-class. Get in.

If only I had this chance with my three grandsons, two actually as the youngest is only 5 months. Excellent outing granddad.
Top report and we could all read it for Free 😉
I know you shouldn’t but young Jack being from these shores does give me an extra ounce of excitement and before our friends from foreign shores take offence it is only because as Englishmen we very very get to witness a young player of such technical skill and an eye for a pass the lads a joy to watch, running with the ball it’s like it’s glued to his foot at no time does he look down- head always up looking for a teammate- He also glides past opponents like a certain nutter that played up the shit hole but was a fine player!
Anyways onwards and upwards bring on Barca 😉
Up The Arse!!
*Peeks head round the door. Sees the huge cannon behind the bar*
Ahh, this looks like a nice friendly place. I’ll have a lager, sir!
To quote from ‘Monty Python’s Life of Brian’:
“You lucky, lucky bastard.”
A great day out and am very jealous
Fantastic game and signs that the barca team are mere mortals after all yesterday. Bring it on!
Sounds like a great day, and Operation Grandson seems to be going to plan so far!
Cup of tea, please.
Wonderful post as always. Glad we didn’t “do an Arsenal” this time around. Followed the Holic pound so cheers for the tip! Even the wife believes that having a flutter is worth it now…
Long, frosty pint of Star to celebrate and whatever you’re having. Times two.
Bring on the basement boys of Barca – they should be worried with RVP, Theo, Fabbers, Song, Djourou etc all fit!
Nice one ‘Holic.
Young Jack the lad really looked the part yesterday, and there were a few other notably fine performances.
I watched part of the Barcelona game last night and thought, yes, we can definitely score against this mob. Unfortunately, with our first choice right back out, I think they will be thinking the same.
Mineral water please Guv – 6 a sides for me later today.
it was a lovely day mate and a great post and it really drives me mad when i see people saying its not got the atmosphere highbury had?
they are right it did,nt have the desolation of being in there in 1973 with 13 and half thousend watching a team that had won a double, got to a cup final and semi struggle to a 2-2 draw with relegation threatened wolve on a tuesday night with brian hornsby scoring off the bench
i loved highbury but this rose tinted shangri la where a bad word was never uttered against the team and was a cauldren of atmosphere is a load of old rot.
we are where we are now and i,m glad of it.
when the emirates rocks it knocks highbury into a cocked hat.
don,t let the grumpy old gits tell you any different.
i was a kid then and all the kids i have taken over the emirates love it and so do i.
i remember heroes like charlie george in the shirt and so will they rvp and cesc
Upgrade on the way back too? Blimey.
Feel for the folks at the front as even when it was all sunny near the end of the game, looks like there was a sudden ‘downpour’ righ above the clock end lower behind the goal.
I remember, in an ‘other’ place, some time ago, people saying we should sign Doyle that he was the type of player we needed.
Heh.
Have to say that be it at 0-0 or 1-0 I was never worried yesterday.
A higher than usual number of pints pre-game may have had a part to play, but I think we really looked comfortable.
Just a little cognac, please.
Top read Holic.
I had a great day yesterday, but mine cost me a fortune!
Oh Jacky, Jacky!
Jacky Jacky Jacky Jack… Wilshere!
Good stuff ‘holic.
I was in row 15 in the family enclosure ‘holic and we got a few blobs of water back there when the wind picked up after the hail stones.
We must have lost the toss to make us attack the north bank in the first half rather than the second as we prefer to.
Well I guess the drinks are on you then.
Or is Lars still paying? 😀
a slow but wonderful day for every gooner
A very accomplished performance, the only thing missing was the lack of goals the build-up play warranted.
Jack was outstanding, although I wish he was just a bit more selfish on a couple of occasions, as he got himself into great positions, but laid a pass instead.
I know they lacked punch up front, but didn’t JD20 just make everything look easy? An injury to him will seriously hamper our hopes of success this season.
Three points, clean sheet, no injuries – job done!
What block were you in Holic?
An extra cold Guinness please.
CoYRRR’s
27, Jersey, by the corner flag.
I am resident in 29 of the FE and it was nice to see the boys attacking our end in the second half.
Went for a 3-0, so I didn’t have the good fortune to cash in. Hey ho!
CoYRRR’s
‘Holic, your pound was spot on…i wouldn’t have minded a couple more goals though.
am torn…..between Pique and Djourou who is the better defender?
Bring on Barca!
‘holic, Wake up man, the grandson has well and truly got you on a string. Nothing but yearly bribing, or more regular, will bring him home. If Wolves are relegated there may be more hope but otherwise nothing will guarantee an Arsenalised grandson short of a personal visit to his school by Eboue in a clown outfit.
Well earned win yesterday and most peasing was the way the defence always looked in control.
Nice write up ‘Holic mate, after such a great day I’m as sure that the Grand’holic is on his way to goonerdom as I am that Wolves will go down. 😉
I did enjoy McCarthy’s post match interview though, “By gum we were spanked, ecky thump” (well that’s what it sounded like to me.
Lagers for me and the lads on the bar, one for yourself too.
Cheers.
RvP’s Right Foot: I’ll let you have this drink on me, but after that I am out of cash. I didn’t follow the ‘Holic pound, see!
Good stuff there, Shadders and great to share a post match pint with you yesterday.
I too had one of those days. A fucking excellent day!
H2H, McCarthy is a good old chap who know his place.
Excellent job on your post and grandson influencing skills, ‘Holic. It’s my grandson Henry’s fourth birthday this month. The complete strip with “Henry 14” is already in the wrapper. The little lad keeps asking “Am I a big boy yet?” and wondering if he can come to games. Only a matter of time now. Here’s a couple of builds on your piece.
Red Robin Rides Hood Over Toothless Wolves
There was an air of the fairy tale, the nursery rhyme, about this Wolves encounter. Only last week, Arsene had marched his men up to Grand Old Yorkshire and to the top of the half-time hill, only to see them play All Fall Down in a second half pantomime that owed more to nursery book nonsense than Arsenal in Wonderland. Diaby played the role of the Mad Hatter to Phil Dowd’s Jabberwock, leaving Barton and Pardew, tweedledum and tweedledee, grinning like Cheshire cats with a pair of ferrets up their rabbit holes.
Meanwhile, The Famous Red Grouse, he of the Deeply Indebted, with his spending money stash leveled lower than Tiny Tim Cratchet’s bootlaces, looked whiter than the Ghost of Christmas Past with a big purple nose. His pretenders to the Invincible Kingdom had been toppled by Wolves more easily than Humpty Dumpty from the wall and had looked as fragile as the Egg Man after a three-foot fall to a three-point drop.
“When were you last Invincible, Old Purple Nose?”
“Never! And you NEVER will be. Sad : – )”
And so, now Grandma Wolf had donned her Saturday best to see whether the streets of London might offer gold to help pave her way to Premier League permanence. Could home Gooners expect to see a show of sharp wolves teeth snarling up front, or would the good Grandma feel more inclined to protect her hairy back passage like many fairy tale merchants before her?
Would Arsenal’s troop of little red riders leave off the handbrake, (all the better to beat you with, Wolves) and roll out the barrel on a passing game unmatched this side of munchkin country on the yellow brick road to the Emerald City?
The Gunners kicked off, fully aware that the Fat Granny Shagger had started Auld Slapper’s juices dripping with a leg move that she uses often in their hotel room trysts, to break the deadlock on a Manchester derby that had been trundling toward a draw. As usual, today’s was a “must win” game. Despite one eye googling like Cyclops towards Wednesday’s encounter with Barca, anything less than a successful wolf hunt would have the red riders inside the wolf and Old Blue Beak and the doubters licking their gnashers.
Need we have worried? No : – ) not ever. Arsenal were always in control and there’s scarcely a thing I can add to Holic’s poetic rendition. We would have been one nil up inside two minutes but for an over-zealous whistle. Then Red Riding Hood Robin showed the FGS that anything he can do, RvP can do better with a chocolate leg volley of magical magnificence. Arsenal then missed at least 29 chances before Robin made it two and the points were in the bag. We’ll win this yet!
On to Wednesday and I’m off to make my day even brighter with some cheap Spanish wine in the meantime.
Goonerholic,
I’m glad to see recognition of Jack Wilshere to confirm what I think I’m seeing when I watch him play.
To me, he looks like just about our best player. I am a huge fan.
I’m looking forward to seeing Ramsey back. If he were back, Jack might be moved forward when Nasri is out.

BtM, Great post wrapping up the last two weeks, and if you are rolling out the barrel of cheap Spanish wine I’ll share a glass or three to help celebrate and plan plan the dethroning of the Barcaloungers.
Great stuff, BtM, always a pleasure 🙂
Your finest malt for the man from the Kingdom, please, barman.
‘olic. Nice report of which I’m not a little envious. Make the most of your time with the grandchildren….they grow up far too fast.
Please refer to the “Emirates”, it sounds better than the “Grove”.
Hope Jack Wilshere starts getting a bit selfish (only a bit) and shoots instead of that extra pass. Yesterday’s game was the best ever he’d played in IMO.
Thanks Nicky.
On the stadium name front, the ground is in Ashburton Grove, and always will be. The fact that an airline has paid peanuts to have their name temporarily attached to it doesn’t change the location for me.
Make you spot on about Jack though.
Thanks ‘holic for sharing your continued attempted conversion of your grandson.
With all of your pleasure over things “free” you wouldn’t by chance happen to have Scots in your ancestry? 🙂
Watching Jack, goggle-eyed at times, yesterday, I was reminded of schoolkids let out for a mid-morning break……screaming and shouting over the release of energy.
On Wednesday, for England, Jack was required to play in a holding position. He did ok but it is not his role at Arsenal. Yesterday, there emerged the attacking m/f , full of joy and confidence, as though the restricting leash had been released. Great to see.
Mother, TvA, from near Stirling 🙂
It is all clear to me now ‘holic. Have a Glenmorangie on me. Make it a double.
Solid performance by everyone, with a niggle over missed chances on goal. FInishing just has to get better! This season could come down to two magic words:
1) Goal
2) Differential
You can bet for sure that Old Purple Proboscis will have his side show no mercy in those fixtures when they have seemingly comfortable leads, and Arsenal need to do likewise, and even more so put those sitters away (Theo, Andrei, et al.) In the words of Steve Winwood, “While you see a chance you take it.”
“Fine romance”.
If Nasri is back for Barça it’s unlikely that he will start straight away. I see AW tappering his reintroduction so as not to tweek that hammy.
Interesting. Jack the Lad is being criticized for his appearance at the Bolton v Everton game by the Setanta staff ahead of the Barça clash.
Why was Jack being criticised? For watching a game of football involving a team he played for? Some people!
I can’t see this season going down to goal difference, it’s mentioned every season, but I’m sure our last gasp 1989 title win was the last time the top two finished level on points. So I’m not too fussed about what the respective GDs of ourselves and Man Utd are. It’s all about getting the points.
Andy Townsend was the culprit on Setanta wrt to the Jack the Lad comments above.
err…why?
to be clear – what was the cockney Irishman’s reasoning?
Mug,
Townsend said that Jack should be focusing on the upcoming potentially biggest tie of his career and resting at home instead of making the journey to Bolton and back for entertainment purposes (paraphrased).
I’m sure he’s old enough to know what relaxes him.
CG,
The long and short of it was that Townsend was alluding to a lack of focus by the youngster and Alan Curbishley concurred.
The Arsenal critics never stop.
Andy Townsend. Just another twonk. Put him on “ignore” and move on fellas.
Would the squad have met today (training or film sessions) or would it be an entire day off? Just curious.
Zico,
How did your 6 aside go? Score any goals? If memory serves, you’re in Scotland right? I’ve gotta get back into 6 aside as it’s great fun and exercise.
Barman, cervezas all around for the anti Setanta anti Arsenal crew.
Barmates,
I was pondering a preview comment for Wednesday. My recollections are a bit dusty. I think when we went to Barcelona last April we had the following injury list:
Gibbs,
Djourou,
Gallas,
Song,
Cesc,
Robin,
Rosicky,
Arshavin,
Eduardo,
Am I on beam hear? Were these nine all missing?
Theo
Thanks mate. Townsend is an ignorant twat. Watching and supporting old team mates is far worse than the antics of most of the england players he has to associate with now, I’m sure! If it was on Tuesday and the away leg, then I might slightly agree with the clueless buffon, but…
TVN @ 51 – kicking off in 5 mins – will let u know. Yeah I’m from Caledonia 🙂
Great post Holic and good performance. I’m quietly very confident about Wednesday. On a personal note about turning infidels into gooners …. The last few weeks I’ve had to go into work on Saturday. Out here in Arizona that means set the DVR, watch the first half and jump into the car to be at the office by 9 am.
The Mrs. doesn’t know a thing about football or Arsenal and doesn’t care to learn. On a good day she’ll remember Arsene Wenger’s name, that Cesc is captain and what RVP stands for ….. Anyway, I get home and turn on the second half while we are having lunch. After the second goal, I gush about the genius of Cesc to my uncaring wife and she says ” Well, my favorite player is Jack Wilshere!” She has secretly watched the last few matches after I’ve left for work.
A triple Absolut straight up with a side of condoms please Barman !!!!
Well done old son
JUst on the “Scotiish” note…. for those of you going to Barcelona…. DO NOT TIP!
They don’t expect it, and will be laughing at you if you leave more than rounding up to the nearest euro.
Holic – promise I still have feelers out for the tickets. Just that they quite like the Arsenal over here, and they’re rarer than a Twitchy tax payment.
will provide other Barca survival tips as they occur to me!
A pint please, for BtM, Zico, half of Holic and any other of our Northern neighbours in the bar tonight.
nice one holic Think Jack Nas Whilshire RVP will swing Fab to staying over the summer, Oh the things to come will be mouth watering. cuppa for me please
sorry meant Walcott last comment all good bring on Barca
And I thought that Almunia is awful with near post shots. You should see Marcelo’s goal for Real, that was absolutely awful from Kameni.
Great stuff as always ‘holic
MUG
You are quite right. Now that Jack has obtained his first international cap, watching a football game is innocent compared to the pursuits of many of his new colleagues. Two pints for Jack and me, barman, a small umbrella in mine, please.
BtM @ #52,
You’re mostly right. Seven of those nine were unavailable as both Rosicky (started) and Eduardo (who came on for him in the 2nd) were available. Here’s what was in the lineup at the Camp Nou last year 2nd leg:
Almunia
Sagna
TV
Silvestre
Clichy
Denilson
Diaby
Rosicky
Nasri
Walcott
Bendtner
Fabianski
Eboue
Traore
Sol
Eastmond
Merida
Eduardo
Sorry to join in late but what utter fucking nonsense some so called pundits spout who gives a shit as Mug so rightly pointed out Jack was out watching old teammates if anything it’s a good sign as he rembers those who have done a small part in devoloping his carear- Its 3 days till match day but then again this is a media that makes Heros out of granny shagging team mates missed shagging thieving pissing in nightclubs roasting scum buckets but oh no you carnt go and watch a game of football farcical
Anyone for a pint 😉
“Mate Mrs “poxy I phone
TVN @ 51 – 5-4 for the Zico 6 after an hour. Keepers were outstanding tonite (my excuse for missing an early chance and avoiding the scoresheet)
@ Catalan – cheers for the beer – Maybe I can buy you a real one at the Tollie one day to disprove your Scottish stereotyping 😉
Zico, was wondering what I had to say to provoke a response!
All rubbish, I know. The Catalans however…..
Excellent, TvA. Thanks.
Chippy – it’s just the double standard imposed against us by the anti Arsenal media.
Zico – I’ll be expecting a full match report after all Zico 6 matches henceforth. Well done with the victory. Might want to buy a RvP poster and rub it for good scoring luck before every match.
Snir – pretty harsh on Kameni. That Marcelo shot was a howitzer and it was struck from the edge of the six yard box. Kameni played great and we could only wish Almunia was ever so good. Espanyol showed the world how not to play with a man up for 90′. Absolutely diabolical and pathetic. Couldn’t string a pass together when, and where, it really mattered.
Barman, a pint of the fine black stuff if you please.
No problem BtM. Happy to be of service. Just keep up the good work on the prose and poetry.
Can anybody help me with this one? I’m from across the pond and a little thick wrt stuff on the Potato Men. What does LWC stand for?
Zico – you’re not a Thistle fan? Or is that the Zico reserve team?
To be fair to Espanyol they were probably only too happy to lose to Real!
TVN – no I’m not a thistle fan – Scottish football is akin to two bald men fighting over a comb….
As for LWC – lily white c*nts – yuck
Nice one ‘Holic, with your passion he’ll be a gooner yet.
Took my daughter again yesterday and, due to rail problems, ensured that we arrived very early.
Had a sing in the street in Drayton Park Road, by the big staircase, as a band had set up outside the Arsenal shop there.
Then walked round to Block 91 by way of the south bridge and the Arsenal panoramic squads photograph.
I pointed out all the players of the Bergkamp – Henry – Vieira squad that she could pronounce, but not identify at the age of barely 2, and showed her the shot of Uncle Pat Rice in his playing days which brought a chuckle of disbelief.
I also explained to her that Arsene only gave him the job of Assistant Manager ‘cos he thought his name was Patrice.
All in all, a great day with a performance to match. I know you will have enjoyed yours just as much.
BtM – probably your best to date – excellent stuff.
Apologies if I’ve missed it somewhere, but I don’t seem to have seen Andrey Arshavin getting the credit he deserves for a much better performance again yesterday.
Putting in a great deal more effort seems to be dragging him back to form, which will be a real bonus for the run in.
Koscielny was also excellent yesterday.
AW is not ruling out Nasri for Wednesday evening – Fab, Jack, Nasri, RvP, Walcott – where’s that pound going ‘Holic ?
I may break all my rules and join you !
Come on Reds.
LWC = lily White cnuts!!!!
There is an old tale about following successful punters after they have tipped a winner, Trev. If you didn’t go to the christening, don’t go to the funeral!
Sums it up well. The bookie will win more often than not, although I am chuffed that this season to a level pound I am certainly on top.
For once!
Ok, i won’t go to the funeral – just so you have confirmation.
Thanks gentlemen on the disection of the LWC acronym. It makes sense. Succinct, concise, to the point, and factually correct. Brilliant!
I’m with you ‘holic regarding bookies. Macca likes it when they lose too! Agreeing with a Scouser. Time for another Guinness please barman.
Hey Goonerholic let me turn you on to some of this mindblowingly good Quebec beer called Don de Dieu, I think that means Gift of God, kind of like Jack Wilshere if you think about it (long enough). It’s so good it makes me start singing like this: So glad we made it, so glad we made it, gimme somma lovin, gimme gimme somma lovin. While I’m here at the bar please barman could you send over another one???
Trev, you are correct. Andrei and Laurent were magnificent yesterday as they can be again when needed, which is just about every Saturday and Wednesday until late Spring. Come on Arsenal (99x)
8 ball – are you drunk? What’s the occasion?
Can anybody help me with this other one? I’ve heard the reference for “chocolate leg” many times. I know that RvP’s weaker foot is his right foot and the term is used to reference that right foot many times. Any explanations?
TvA, I’m tellin’ ya it’s a combination of that Quebec beer and that feeling were gonna have in midweek when we smash Barcelona to smithereens, or as they say in an obscure corner of Catalunya, mordacitos.
Has anybody seen the video of young Ryo Miyaichi yet? My word! Two matches, two MOTM, goals, assists, unreal pace, tricks, stepovers and only 2 professional matches in his life. Le Boss has done it again…….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9auntaQ7LA
And check out the ovation by 46,000 Feyenoord supporters after the match ……
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dqAJNUo8xQ
Hey Duttlenheim at #55 excellent post. Sorry to say the bt8bbnn management has not yet crossed over from the dark side as the Duttlenheim management seems to have done. I’d like to raise a toast to the Duttlenheim management, if there’s something suitable behind the bar.
Quebec beer in MN? WTF?
“chocolate leg” anybody?
Theo van A – “chocolate leg” is, according to an RvP interview, just an expression used in Holland for the weaker leg, the one that is not used so much.
Don’t know what the connection with chocolate is, but that was his explanation.
While on the general topic of legs, apparantly the RvP power in that left leg, what we Gooners refer to as the “glass” leg, comes from a game he used to play as a youngster with his mates in Holland, called “40/40”.
Basically, he and a mate would set up 2 small goals, 40 metres apart.
Each would stand in his own goal and blast the ball as hard as he could to try and score in the other goal. Simples, but, as I read it in an interview with the man himself, true.
If you would like to know any further fascinating facts on our No. 10, ask someone else, ‘cos I just exhausted mine!
Cheers.
It was a strange old day at The Grove. We had all said about concentrating on Wolves and not even thinking about the Barca game but there always seemed one eye on the Catalans from the moment I got into the ground.
I thought we played very well in patches but again suffered from not being clinical. One day someone is going to get such a hiding. I thought we generally played within ourselves for the majority of the game. No bad thing considering what looms on the horizon.
The second strike was the particular highlight for me. One of my little moans in previous drinks has been centred around why we do not break at pace anymore. The move for the 2nd goal reminded me of the Arsenal of old. Fast, flowing, sweeping move that just tore Wolves to bits.
Jack has already been mentioned extensively on here already. I can only echo what has been said. For me it is not just his movement with the ball, it is his movement off it that I find so impressive. I thought we looked a lot more solid at the back with the excellent Djourou. He has come on leaps and bounds this year.
To conclude I want to talk about our little Russian. Many have been very critical of Arshavin recently during which at best can be called a dip in form. Many have questioned his attitude and he has been the subject of all kinds of abuse. I for one would agree that he has had an alarming dip in form. However, I do not believe in slating players for that. On Saturday Andre had his best game for months. He was a constant threat and worked very hard. He made challenge after challenge and I for one was delighted with his afternoon’s work. If we really are going to challenge for major trophies this season then we need players like Andre firing.
Holic, I am glad you and yours had such a good day. It is always a great day out, but always better when a plan really comes together.
Keep the faith.
Theo. Someone’s Chocolate Leg is their weaker leg. It comes from the fact that their weaker leg is so weak and soft that it is made out of chocolate. It is also used in cricket but with a chocolate arm. Poor or weak throw would equal a chocolate arm.
It can also be used for the complete opposite. For example, I have heard the phrase used several times for someone who has a powerful shot. Someone unleashes a thunderbolt and they would say ” no chocolate in that one.” Not sure how it started but it is something that has been around for at least 20 years.
Cheers Trev. Drink of your choice.
Hot milk please mate – past my bedtime.
Thanks Steve T. Never heard it over on this side of the pond. Strange that. Drink of your choice too.
But lads. When I was a youngster I used to get some pretty good solid chocolate for Easter. They must only have hallow chocolate in Holland.
Just finishing off a cheeky glass of red and that is it for me.
So your chocolate never ever went soft of melted? Blimey, you have been had over……….
Sounds like chocolate ice cream if you ask me …
Always ate my chocolate fast.
Where I’m from chocolate refers to a fine black lady. As in, I’d like to get cavities from that chocolate!
TvA, I’m sure I would too but we can’t all have what we want, at least not at my age and station in life. On the other hand, judging by his name, Diaby’s Turtleneck may have some stories to tell.
8 ball – I’m sure your mgmt wouldn’t approve of chocolate tasting, or chocolate sampling, or tasting other chocolate, or double chocolate, triple chocolate, etc. I understand. The more I talk about chocolate the more I love it!
I’m sure DT is inundated with fine chocolate product on his campus. Lucky bastard …
So what’s the story behind your PQ beer intoxication?
Super Bowl party last Sunday brought a Quebecois guest who brought, you guessed it, beer from the homeland (Montreal, that is). Sampled some of it tonight for the first time. One bottle down, two different varieties to go, but they’re on the large side (750 ml each) so getting toasted was easy after figuring out the beer was to my taste.
Well done 8 ball! There’s a fine Quebec beer I sample on occasion at a local pub here in southern ON. It’s called Chambly, I believe. It’s served in glass like the Belgium beer named Duval. They’re both quality products.
I’m glad CL is back. It’s been a long two months and I’ll be watching all the games.
The Potato Men have a tough test in Milan. Any thoughts, anyone, any where … any time …
Nightcap barman please.
TvN: many seem convinced that Milan will make mash out of the Spuds, but I am far from convinced that will happen. Sure, for tomorrow they are missing Bale and as I understand it also Modric but the pressure is all on Milan. Milan are also spearheaded by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a player we know almost always goes missing in the CL knock-out stages (yes, he scored two at the Grove last season but that was more or less the exception that confirms the norm) so I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the Spuddies go through over two legs.
I agree with Lars – Italian teams are not quite what they were – Maureens Inter were the exception in recent years.
That said I will be rooting for the Rossoneri big style tomorrow night.
Barca confidence (amongst the fans) has taken a bit of a dip. They are aware that we have a fit team this year as opposed to last, so are wary of us…..
A generous morning coffee for the Brazilian northern barbarian please….
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal/8321848/Alan-Hansen-Arsenal-captain-Cesc-Fabregas-can-go-to-a-whole-new-level-against-Barcelona-in-Champions-League.html
Is he sick ? Compliments? Surely, something must be wrong.
@ Catalan – Barbarian?
Well, its free coffee I suppose 😉
Re Barca – if only we were taking on the fans as opposed to the team!!
Snir!
Just got on to say exactly the same thing. It’s… HANSEN?
http://le-grove.co.uk/2011/02/14/gooners-do-you-want-to-keep-cesc-then-tell-him/
At last!!! A good post from Le-Grove! Fair play to them, I totally support that initiative!
I just have one request to all holics going on Wednesday! Please boo the shit out of Pique and Xavi and let them know one thing.
“Hands off Cesc Fabregas” (to the regular tune of “we’ve got…”).
God I hate that team so much.
Now that I’m thinking about last season’s fixture with Barca at the Camp Nou, it seems as though that GPS thing was a great SUCCESS!
Damn yeah!
That, and the beloved rotations 🙂
Zico… what on earth made you think I was referring to you?? 😉
Maybe it’s just the excitement, but I’m getting a better and better feeling about this game. Maybe because we are still so close in the league, we can just go out and enjoy ourselves this year. We know they are fantastic… but so are we. Time to show it.
@ Catalan – Barbarians don’t like cricket 🙂
CG – We were still so close las season as well, in fact we were 3 points off the top with 5 matches to go when Bentdner scored against Wolves and Chelsea beat United.
It’s just that we’re a better team with less injuries this season :).
Zico – you win!
Snir – true, I guess it’s just a feeling I have this year.
I was lucky enough to be in last season’s home fixture against Barca and one thing I immediately noticed was that Nasri was awful at tracking back and tracking the run of Alves. Watching the highlights now just confirms my initial thoughts.
It’s nice to see how much Samir has grown not just in goal scoring ability but in the defensive side as well.
A pint of your best Boddingtons for Doctor C whose positive outlook is starting to sound like the rallying cry we need.
Catalan is Puyol out for Wednesday? Any other notable absentees?
Puyol is out.
No other notables.
It should be Valdes, Alves, Pique, Abidal, Maxwell, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Messi, Villa
I see an opening between Abidal and Maxwell for Theo to exploit.
Also, whoever is on the left should take advantage of that. Both Nasri and Arshavin are great with the ball at their feet and while Alves is very good going forward he is an average defender at best.
Beautifully written. Can only dream of being at the Grove watching the games from San Francisco, CA. Thanks for the insight.
What a pleasure to watch a young player develop right in front of our eyes. How much better and more confident is Jack now than at the beginning of the season? His confidence grows every game… he used to just always play it simple, but now he is looking to turn and either run at defenders or deliver passes that hurt the opposition.
Yesterday was a young Jack delivering a Frabregas-esque performance. Knock on wood, if he keeps up his learning trajectory he will be soon be adding some finishing and shooting to his growing toolkit.
Lets just hope. Cmon Jack, we’re rooting for you!!!!
Yep = Puyol out (Snir way ahead of me) and the natives don’t rate Maxwell at all.
Boddies all round….!
Job done v Wolves, I thought Arshavin, RVP, Jack & Walcott all looked lively on Saturday & we could have had 6 or 7 goals. Djourou adds a composure defensively & Arsenal haven’t lost this season when he plays. That’s only 4 goals conceded in Djourou’s last 11 appearances (4 v Newcastle don’t count as he wasn’t on the pitch).
Let’s take that momentum into the Barca game & after watching their game v Gijon on Saturday, I too hope they play Maxwell. Walcott could give him a nightmare. With Abidal & Busquets rested on Saturday, it appears Barca will be anticipating Arsenal’s attacking threat. This will be a big game for our young GK Szczesny.
Good Day ‘holic Nation,
One thing to add to and consider regarding previous posts from CG & Snir. Considering, from Pep’s point of view, that this is the first & away leg he may tweek his lineup a tad. Fearing Walcott’s pace also, Pep may play Abidal at LB instead of Maxwell, slide Busquets back to CB, and play Mascherano at DM. This would be Barça’s strongest defensive set up with Puyol out. Otherwise, Snir is correct with FCB’s XI (with Puyol injured) as their side & formation (4-3-3) pretty much picks itself.
If Maxwell plays it will be a welcome sight for both Walcott & the Gunners. He is by far a more adventurous LB than Abidal. And everyone knows that Alves is ultra adventurous. We’ll need to counter quickly and down the flanks … that second goal v Wolves is a perfect blueprint. I’m sure Milito will not even sniff the pitch during this tie. That horse is shot.
Easier said than done but the Gunners need to minimize FCB’s away goals (ideally 0), stay disciplined wrt to team shape, and counter quickly down the flanks.
Let all the UCL festivities continue! It’s been a long two month wait for the best footy competition on the globe to resume.
As an interesting side note. One of the unnoticed reasons for Barça’s draw to Gijon over the weekend was Nacho Novo. He’s been a bogey man for many clubs. And you gotta love his name!
TVA you mention how Pep might move a centre back to a full back spot, something which I’ve been pondering on, as Eboué at right back is definately the weak link in wednesday’s probable line up.Could Schillachi move on to the right hand side or can Frimpong do a Flamini and drop back because EE’s defensive placement and attacking instincts worry me.I’m not being negative,I feel good about the CL this year.
Steve T ,you most certainly are not alone in noticeing AA’s work rate and defensive responsabilities,I think he has realised the possibilities of this team and doesn’t want to watch it from the bench.Maybe this year injuries have done us a favour, giving Nasri a rest when needed and spurring on AA ,giving Chesney the chance to step up and claim the No 1 spot and allowing RVP his purple patch of form at the business end of the season. The only negative being the loss of TV5 for most of the season.
As for Jack I reckon playing as a full international really peaked his already impressive self confidence to push onto new levels
by the way thanks to whoever posted the Ryo Miyaichi links. The future looks so bright with him and Ramsey coming back.
@ #124 ….. Frimpong is hurt and has been since Austria. He won’t be back this season after doing his cruciate. That said I don’t know if Barcelona is the team to start experimenting with 18 year olds in foreign positions. Eboue will play.
There’s no doubt we should come out with our best 11 minus Sagna
Szczesny
Eboue – Djourou – Koscielny – Clichy
Song – Wilshere
Walcott – Cesc – Nasri
RVP
The only debate for me is Arshavin. Yes he’s been better the last few matches but Theo is an absolute MUST in this tie. He really hurt Barca last year with his goal at home and setting up Bendtner’s goal away. ( even if he kinda made a meal of lay off ) Barca are rather slow at the back and Theo can provide several breakouts with them pushing so far up. So if it’s between Arshavin and Nasri, that’s a no brainer for me. Sammy plays with Arshavin to sub if need be.
@ #124 – Like Milito, Squillaci will not see the light of day in this tie. Squillaci at RB would cause more problems than you are trying to solve.
@ #126 – If Nasri is 100%, I agree, it would be a no brainer. But how healthy is he? Can he go 90′? Maybe it would be better to start AA in this one and Nasri, when he’s back to 100%, in the 2nd leg. Only the AFC medical staff and AW know the true health of Nasri and may not honestly let on to the media. Last I heard, Nasri will likely face a game day fitness test (much like Cesc in last year’s first leg). We’ll see. Time will tell.
Fantastic recap as always, ‘holic. And a great supplement from BtM too. Any back 4 permutation that Guardiola can come up with on Wednesday will lack pace and have at least one man playing their less preferred position. If it’s Busquets at center half, that means Mascherano as the holding mid, and he really looked off the pace on Saturday against Gijon. A quick check on soccernet tells me that he’s played in just 6 out of Barca’s 12 fixtures since the New Year. And I recall Cesc giving him the run around at Anfield a few seasons ago, so really nothing to fear there.
I’ve got to disagree with you, TvA. I see Abidal in the center with Maxwell on the left. The Brazilian will be asked to curb his attacking instincts, and he’ll need to because I don’t see David Villa tracking back and marking Theo much at all.
Either way, that side of the pitch (Our right, their left) will be crucial. Eboue and Walcott against Villa and either Maxwell or Abidal seems to favor the forwards in both cases. Obviously Song and Djourou will have to be ready to help out if Manu isn’t on his game.
Many pre-match bottles will be needed to calm the nerves come tomorrow afternoon. I don’t know of any Catalan beers, maybe some Heineken given the Dutch influence at Barca?
DT,
Cheers. Glad to see you back. Happy Valentines’ Day to you and all ‘holics out there.
I didn’t say Pep will play Abidal at LB, only that he may. There are pluses and minuses to using Abidal there with Puyol injured. The Frenchman is the regular LB, plays there in the big games for Pep (i.e. v Real Madrid this year), and is the better option than Maxwell in trying to deal with Walcott. Abidal is certainly more physical and looks to have more pace than Maxwell. I believe AFC’s biggest threat v FCB is Walcott’s ridiculous pace. You’re right that, if Maxwell plays, he won’t be blazing uncontrolled up field. He will be asked to stay put more than usual. We’ll see which way Pep sets up. But remember, either way, this is their away leg and they will play it closer to the vest. Had the game been @ Camp Nou, and with Puyol injured, then it would almost certainly be Abidal @ CB and Maxwell @ LB.
Don’t drink too early as the match is scheduled for Wednesday and not for tomorrow. Unless, of course, you will be doing as I will and watch the other UCL games. Heineken is a nice option as it is the UCL sponsor. Another decent Dutch product is Grolsch. I like their swing top bottles. You might find that a fine Spanish pino tinto may help to settle prematch jitters.
Fair enough, TvA. And yea I meant Wednesday.
I would not even consider Nasri. He will not be fully fit. He does not need to play against orient. Give him another week of rehab and he will be spot on for stoke.
Ahead of Wednesday, it is interesting, as the anticipation grows, that we are giving ourselves a chance against what everyone regards as the best team in the world.
We have a team that should include Fabregas, Nasri (maybe), Song, Wilshere, van Persie, Walcott (like him or not, he worries Barca) and others, including rising stars like Djourou.
Look at that list and you have to be excited.
One man has been responsible for bringing all those players to the club. While Arsene Wenger can drive you mad at times by not signing the players we all think we need, that is a fantastic list of players by anyone’s reckoning.
Actually, two men have been largely responsible for bringing those players to the club.
The other one is Steve Rowley.
He is the chief scout that Chelsea are now reportedly targetting this summer.
Having failed, as yet, to integrate any of the youth players, by way of whom they were to become self-sufficient, into their first team, they now have to turn, with all their millions, to the Arsenal to find out how it is done.
And there we return to Arsene Wenger.
He has shown, and been allowed to show, the kind of patience of which Chelsea are simply not capable.
Having identified a player with Rowley, Wenger has worked with them for years to bed them into the smoothest football machine in the country.
Let’s hope that a club like Chelsea, who turf out youngsters after a few difficult weeks, will hold no attraction for a chief scout who has been at the Arsenal for over 30 years.
With Djourou, Song, and Wilshere helping out the Szzz man in goal we have a lot of defensive stability we didn’t have in place at this time last year. We could use Sagna but perhaps Eboue will pleasantly surprise his critics?
Koscielny also deserves his share of credit for our improved solidity at the back. Toward the beginning of the season I was a little worried about him but I’ve gotten more and more relaxed watching his recent performances. His aggressiveness is paying dividends, and he is more mobile than I thought.
8 ball,
It sounds like you’re sober today. Did you take the mgmt out to dinner tonight?
I think the combination of JD & Kos is pretty solid. Trouble occurs when Squillaci is inserted into that equation against quality opposition. He’s prefect for Orient.
Care for a couple PQ lagers?
Sure thing, TvA. Behind the bar at my place the choice is Quelque Chose or La Fin du Monde. That last one should be a good choice to toast the end of the world as they know it for a certain Catalan football club.
I’ve had that La Fin du Monde. Brilliant stuff. Save it for watching the game.
Hail ‘Holics and ‘Holic. @ Steve T #131, that’s exactly my view regarding Nasri. I agree 150% as I think it’s not necessary to rush Nasri back and risk a setback like with Cesc earlier this season. We have many important games coming up, thus, he should continue to rehabilitate properly and make a come back for the Stoke game which would be ideal. However, I’ve read reports that Nasri is desperate to be involved against Barca, but I think common sense and pragmatism should prevail to avoid the unnecessary risk. Looking forward to a good game on Wednesday. RVP, Cesc and Theo to wreak havoc. Bless up!
A nice glass of Moscato please Barman!
I had a bad premonition. Barça’s got their own speed merchant. A guy named Pedro who has been on fire this year and is underrated IMO. The fella isn’t quite as fast as Walcott but he does have a rocket up his ass. This bad dream of mine had Speedy Rodriguez skinning Clichy repeatedly and often …
Hi holics,
Though initially when the draw was made I was down, now I m actually giving us a good chance against the genticists, at least at home.
As Jack said, don’t show them too much respect in the midfield. Sure, they may have more players with better technical ability but what sets them apart is their industry off the ball. We should work hard off the ball, earn our right to keep the ball and not concede early. They will get frustrated as they are the favorites to win this tie.
I’ll tell you, if we are solid defensively especially in midfield and defense, we will kill them on the counter.
Eboue, please stick to your tasks and give Messi,Pedro and Villa a game.
Come on Arsenal! Can’t wait
Oh and btw I hate that cartoonhead Xavi and that Cesc lover Pique. Boo them please.
A drink for Harsha, please barman!
TVA,
one thing you can be sure of is Clichy will not get done for pace even Walcott would struggle to skin him.
I ll have whatever your drinking, Ollie
Thanks
Yes Holic I concur with the other Holics, a nice write up.
It was a good match to prepare for Barcenal!
I’m sure the Grand-Holic will be thinking about the red and white in the back of his mind.
I’ll take an Evian for now and join in the bar banter, arguments and debate!
I don’t think Clichy will have to worry about the speed of Perdo. He’ll have his hands full with both Pedro and Dani-Alves if he don’t get the back up!
Arsh has got some work to take of!
Arsh and Manu have to be up to the challenge. This is their chance, and who knows, if they do well enough they could displace Nasri and Sagna for the away tie in Barcelona. Ali-Frazier may not be the perfect analogy, but it’s time for us to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee while turning Barsa into a huddling mass of lumbering and blubbering Joe Fraziers. We are done with the Fight of the Century and the Rumble in the Jungle, it’s time to bring on the revenge fest of the Thrilla in Manila.
Please anyone who’s going to the game, boo the shit out of Xavi and Pique.
First class story Mr. Holic.
I agree whole heartedly give him a run around at the end of Leyton if poss then maybe again at Stoke, if not start him then depending upon his progress!
Then carry on from there accordingly!
I agree with earlier drinks re: the partnership with Kos and JD. It has become consistent as they’ve played together for a good few games. I’m sure the same could happen if Scillachi got a good run in the side.
Yeah so as I said before no point wasting Nas and bring him back gradually
Yeah Manu needs to be on his game too!
DTn @ 128; Catalan Beers – Von Damm (recommended), Estrella (meh).
Is Dr.C buying then? 😉
Help yourself – the fridge is full. For now.
As you can imagine, the banter is in full flow over here. And that’s just between the family!
One v how many? Is that a fair fight?
I ll buy, TS
Drink up 🙂
“The fridge is full”.
Is there really any sentence in the English language that needs less explanation?
Cheers Catalan
Any predictions for today’s games?
I’ve got both home sides winning 2-0 …
TVN; Me and my son (plus Espanyol fans) versus many many many!
Cheers, Harsha and Dr.C
Zico, let the fridge always be at least half-full 😉
I thought AW was in fine form for today’s press conf. He has the air of a highly confident and self-assured man.
Now it’s up to the boys to prove him right.
I’m confident we’ll win tom night. I’m plumping for 3-1. Cesc to score one of ours.
Trev @ #132
Great post. Please pull up a chair by Dr.C’s rapidly emptying fridge and I promise to re-stock it with the Barman’s help.
We have a lot to be proud of right now fellow ‘Holics.
Even if my scoreline prediction is wildly wrong for tom night’s result, we’ve still got plenty to shout about.
COYRRRs
My 3 year old just told me that we would win 17-1. He let Barca score so that Mummy would be happy. I’ll get him a beer…
Dr.C
Maybe a milk-top would be more in order?
TS@161 – A win@ 3-1? You’re sticking the boat out a bit aren’t you? 🙂
Dr C I’ll take 17-1 😉
I’ll have a glass of Sparkling Water if it’s all the same. I don’t want to go overboard tonight 😉
I’ll put a pound on a 4-1 win, fot tmw. Goal scorers:
RVP X2
Theo x 1
Arsh x 1
Messi/Villa x 1
Here’s to high spirits in the bar!
TVA – I would have gone for a win by Milan (2-0ish) tonight and a 1-1 draw for Valencia v Schalke
TS.. you’re quite right. He can have a pineapple juice. I’ll take the beer.
GT. You got one right. Unfortunately the wrong one. Still – the Spu%s have shown that reputation isn’t everything….
Hi Holics
I hope that Theo learns from Lennon’s assist tonight, and does it better tomorrow – 3 times will do
Now for a cherry Grand Marnier – what a choice of local drinks there is here , and looking forward to tomorrow
COYG
Dr C – I know I was hoping! 😉
