Arsene And ‘The Medias’ – Part One
May 14th, 2014 by 'holic
A late and unexpected invitation leads to a hurried rearrangement of Wednesday. The boss is not a problem. He will cover for me. Now all I have to do is to get myself to Shenley before nine in the morning. Trains? No. Drive then, but how long? “Ninety minutes tops” utters one. I decide on two hours and am well advised to do so after incidents on both the motorways that make up the route. Two hours it takes.
The aggravation is worthwhile when Arsene walks into the room and (from a respectful distance behind the bank of cameras) we get to hear at first hand what is said. It is not just what Arsene says that is interesting. Some of his inquisitors, seasoned hacks, have a mischievous streak. Let’s face it, in the unlikely event that they can outwit him and get that golden quote that guarantees a storm in a teacup and a zillion clicks they will have achieved their aims.
“We don’t normally have this many people in, obviously. It’s on a par with the big Champions League nights”, we are told later. There are some fourth estate big names in attendance who don’t turn out regularly before run of the mill fixtures. Still, I get to see events from ten yards away which is a lot closer than I would ever want to be to a West Indian quickie with a new cherry in his hand. These things are all relative.
A pattern has evolved over time that those who watch the weekly highlights on Arsenal Player will be familiar with. Team news (Ox and the skipper may or may not make it) follows the opening welcome and then more chat about the match itself. This being a Cup Final the words nine and years are never far away. Nor the word complacent. This is Arsenal, after all, with a history of losing finals to underdogs.
“I don’t think you’ve been asked this for about two days. What is the latest on your contract, Arsene?” This man is paid to ask searching questions, the answer to which he heard 48 hours ago. Arsene resists the urge to say “I am hoping to leave here and manage Tottenham. I am just waiting for Daniel Levy’s call”. Instead, “Nothing has changed”, with a shrug, and you suspect a barely hidden sigh. The follow-up is a stunner. “Can you tell us what the latest is with Bacary Sagna?” Don’t you read the papers pal?
Of course there are questions that are more to the point, as well as a surprising reticence by a Danish journalist to ask what on earth is going on with Bendtner. Arsene is gone as quickly as he arrived and laptops are hastily fired up and copy filed. The break affords an opportunity to top up on caffeine and pre-packed biscuits. Food is for match days when the assembled wordsmiths have to be kept onside. It is Cup Final week. Let them eat cake, if they brought their own .
Camaramen, tv presenters, and hangers on like yours truly, are taken to a training pitch to watch the first part of the Wednesday session. One of our number gets a cry of “a-ha” from the joker that is Lukas Podolski. I gaze into a far corner and see goalkeepers (plural) being worked. I recognise Lukasz Fabianski and assume it is Wojciech Szczesny with his back to me. Later I see Szczesny working out elsewhere. Both are working hard, so no, I have no clue as to who is playing on Saturday.
Back to base for hot chocolate and more biscuits. The windows don’t seem to open, or nobody cares that it appears to be ninety degrees in there. Another welcome and familiar face appears for the afternoon session. There is a split as some players are to be interviewed on the indoor pitches while we get to see three, at somewhat closer quarters than Arsene, in the press room. More on that in the coming days.
Together – The Book Launch
Those who enjoyed the first Arseblog book, So Paddy Got Up, should by now have heard of the launch of the second tome from that stable. If not where have you been? Anyway, should that be the case just click here to find the details of the event being held on Thursday at the Tollington. Together is the story of Arsenal’s unbeaten season in 2003/04 and the launch date is the tenth anniversary of the final league match of that season.
Get yourself along there, buy this excellent book, and tell Blogs the ‘holic sent you.

Have it
Blast, well inbath !
Lucky chap, Holic – I think. 😉
cl guaranteed…
nice time, goonerholic!
damnit trev!
You’re clearly a man of restraint, H.
There had to be at least one hack there who you should’ve kicked in the nads! 😉
Sounds like s great day.
That sounds like it was worth the 2 hour each way drive. I look forward to the next instalment. Thanks for the insight Guvna.
Very jealous of your Colney trip ‘Holic! Nice to read a bit of insight as to what it’s like there.
Do you think all the biscuits could be causing
The soft tissue injuries.
This man is paid to ask searching questions, the answer to which he heard 48 hours ago.
The journalistic equivalent of “are we nearly there yet? Are we nearly there yet? Are we nearly there yet?”.
In other news, Luis Suarez has issued his come-get-me plea:
When asked about interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid, he said: “I don’t want to answer that. I try to avoid press speculation.
“I know what I want and what my agent says is good for me, but I don’t want to comment on speculation.”
Expect this one to drag on through the summer.
Who needs hacks when you’ve got a forum thats more intelligible and entertaining !
Thanks again H!
Thanks all. Great to be there, but a bloody long day with the drive from here and back.
Great fly-on-the-wall’s view, ‘Holic. I know the EPL requires these press conferences, but are they really of any use? Did anyone — either the assembled hacks or the probably better informed hanger-on — learn anything new?
Excellent stuff. Sounds an interesting day. Shame about the media fuckwits.
So, who is in goal on Saturday???? Surely you must have asked someone???
Nice one guv’, you’re in the inner circle now mate, you may even be able to add a few initials to your moniker, Goonerholic ITK does have a nice ring to it. 😉
Steve,
I heard it was going to be that Polish bloke. 😉
++++++++++++BREAKING NEWS. BREAKING NEWS++++++++
Sky are reporting that Tottenham are so confident that Mauricio Pochettino will be their next manager that they have already began the search for his replacement.
Just saying like.
😀
HEH 😀
My heart is telling me Fab, but brain is for Woj.
If we win, it will be just a pleasant memory for Lukas when he leaves, but if Woj lift the trophy, it’ll be just the first of dozen for him in Arsenal.
When ya touch that silvah, you’re hooked.
What is better for the future of Arsenal?…I’d go with Woj.
Play the strongest team SSY, it’s as simple as that.
Steve 🙂
H2H, nobody who goes to the pressers is ITK. The whole thing is stage managed to perfection and the penalties for transgressing the unwritten rules are well known.
Thanks holic,re the cup final I’d go with szech for the simple reason he will be at the club next year.harsh on fab who has done great on our cup run but fuck sentiment, your not here next year good luck to you, same goes for sagna.we all know how consistent sag has been throughout his time but jenks is the future I personally think its a great opportunity for him.
Well the final of Yourhopeless league between Benfica and Sevilla is very intense game of football so far.
Next time you must insist on Arsenal sending a helicopter to pick you up ‘holic. Then you won’t have to file a report, just a video of your trip. 🙂
Cheers ‘holic. I know you couldn’t see it, but my tongue was firmly inplanted in my cheek when I typed that.
*now removed*
It was very interesting stuff and I look forward to the next installment.
Evening all.
Woj for me. Hull will use long balls into the area at every opportunity and Fab dislikes such tactics.
“Transgressing the unwritten rules….”, Holic ?
Doug and Dinsdale weren’t there …. ? 😉
Steve T @16 It’s Szcz – the only reasonable explanation for the choice of GK last Sunday.
Be happy.
Steve T @19 MEGA-heh!
Szczesny it will be. I am convinced after today. Not been told. Just observed.
Tough on Benfica. Wanted them to win, if only for the fact that they humiliated Spuds in run-in.
Upside Eandy: Spuds cannot claim to have lost out to the winners.
H2H knows at 22. Just play your strongest team. End of.
Bring it on. That’s what I say. I can’t wait.
Strongest team?
Szcz
Bac Per Kos Gibbs
Arteta
TR7 Rambo Santi Poldi
Mesut
HFB
Subs: Fab, Jenks, Flamster, LJW, Diaby, Sanogo + TV5 or Nacho
Nice – we get 12 players! 🙂
That’s a very strong team, bath.
Even for 12 players ! 😉
Great minds, z.
He must be on a fine malt tonight. 😉
No NB23, Bath? Just for old times sake? To boo him on and off the pitch?
Ah well.
Trev@29 – of course they weren’t, the presser was held at the London Colney meeja centre, not the conversation pit. And where was Kierkegaard?
Nice one Guvnor; hope you enjoyed your trip.
COYG WTNM
Ttg,
You should have mail.
Cheers, Holic.
OOps, I snuck TR7 in as an extra – he’s only a little’un, can’t we have him on as well?
Just seen the epitome of meaningless and superficial ticket straplines hanging round the neck of a boardroom ticket holder up the road:
“The game is about
GLORY
(in very big letters).
It is about doing things in style
AND WITH A FLOURISH
(in not quite so big letters).”
So THAT’s why Danny L’evil sacks SO many managers.
I never got the hang of how we played after we dropped 442. Always looked like we had fewer players on the pitch – hence why I needed an extra one.
It’s genius, bath, 4-1-4-1-1. So simple and so obvious.
Why did it take you to think of this ?
Wagner AHHTTT!
So you thought that 4-4-3 was the way to go???
I’m with you Bath. Bring it on, that’s what I say.
And we could have 12 subs. Then if it’s all going wrong we could take one off and put three on.
And if things get really really tough then perhaps we can use a second ball???
😀
I’m sure we could sneak TR7 in, or even better Santi without the ref spotting him. :0)
Personally, I’ve always thought Arsenal should be allowed 12 players. Especially in the big away games. 😉
Holic
We await the guest post from Arsene himself .
Surely a matter of time.
A cup final preview by him would be nice
Sure he’d say yes but he might not like Trev’s puns or Cba’s blank verse!
Meedja whore, indeed, Guv’ 😛
Well done. It’s about time you get some recognition for all the goodwill your establishment promotes…
Can we begin “Operation Destroy Handbrake” yet?
BMBD
it is our first chance of a trophy in 9+ years.
it is the clubs biggest match in 9+ years
Arsene will go for his number 1 keeper as should be the case
Arsene is certainly not a risk taker or one for surprises
vinay- in response to previous drinks.
if luiz suarez was setting the stage for a move to arsenal and a bid from arsenal that would not be refused by Liverpool, that is exactly how great deals in any business are completed. why we didn’t go in for him in a big way and secure the deal is incredible.
it is not Liverpool or suarez or suarez agent fault that we did not come up with the right cash.
that issue only lays at our feet.
or this may mean we did not really want him, fair enough, but what a player to miss out on.
if he cost 60 mil, would he still not be one of the best buys and most valuable players any serious club could have.
personally, I don’t like his antics, but he truly is an awesome player of his generation as he makes goals, he doesn’t just score off perfect balls from others.
just imagine ozil or ramsey or cazorla feeding suarez with theo outwide to mop up. it would be an unbeatable combination.
this is why I believe we truly fucked that one up and our season.
it was us who were simply unwilling to pay the market rate for a player of that calibre.
and when you look how close we got to the top, a top class striker would have been and should have been a fantastic addition to our squad
I hear Sami Nasri is threatening to retire from international football after being left out of the France squad.
Memo Nasri: I have news for you. You’ve already been retired by Didier Deschamps. He beat you to it. Why not retire from ALL football? That would larn ’em, aye. 🙂
Öskar
If I counted correctly in the training pictures on the dot.con there are 3 of Fabianski and 2 of Szczesny (out of 40 pictures total). The evidence does not lie. LF will play in the final. Against all odds and sane judgment.
Oskar @ 54: Samir’s international career is most likely going to go the way of Anelka’s, culminating with that infamous “va te faire enculer, sale fils de pute” jibe or something similar to some coach at some time.
For all his really strange behavior and general bizarreness, I still find Anelka much more palatable than Samir. Am I too biased by my Arsenal connection?
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…..
We’re not all so repetitive down here!
Aussie, give it a rest mate, Suarez is not coming, never will be and quite frankly going over and over and on and on about it just makes you look a bit like a lover scorned!
Oskar- if arsene chooses LF over sczezney for the FA cup final than please shout yourself your favourite NZ beverage of choice on me.
It would be the biggest risk of arsenes distinguished career and I can’t see him all of a sudden becoming mr risky.
(Barring injury or other of course)
I seem to remember Anelka being a chavs player at the time, Dr F, so understandably a bit barmy. But I don’t remember either of them with any particular fondness. Both very selfish players from what I recall.
Cursing is a bit of a lost art these days, usually tending to the basics, so credit to Anelka for some imagination. But still a long way short of classic. I have two particular favourites…
” A curse on the milk of the daughter of thy unborn child! ”
” May your daughter marry a ghost and beget a kitten and may the Lord High King of Glory permit it to get the mange! ”
…both of which sound best uttered in a drunken rage.
Öskar
AW won’t select Fab ahead of Sir Ches, Aussie. He as much as anybody wants the ‘no trophies’ curse lifted and will most certainly be picking his #1 side for the weekend. Sir Ches is #1 GK and will play. Fab had his farewell at Norwich.
Öskar
Anyway, if it comes down to the difference between our goalies deciding the game we wouldn’t deserve to win. There’s not a lot between the two of them, but a great deal between us and Hull.
4-0 anyone?
Öskar
Talking of former players, anyone remember this guy?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_McGowan
Just goes to show – don’t get too excited about the academy.
I think its a clear choice between Bob Wilson and David Seaman for the Cup Final Glove Butler role.
At this junture I slightly fancy Bob.
But not as much as I used to slightly fancy Nigella Lawson.
Suarezzzzzzz
Anyone got the stones to make a prediction about Saturday?
I’m saying 3-1 to the good guys: never felt we had a shot at the title but have fancied us for the cup all season, no sense changing now.
Expect Ramsey on the score sheet to cap a sensational season. I seem to be in the minority, but I’m not really bothered who starts in sticks – they’re both good keepers.
COYG
grand day out
well deserved
good man yerself ‘holic
Arsene not a risk taker?
Are you guys for real?
In any event, I’ve convinced myself that Szcesney will start, as he should.
And the difference between the keepers, in my opinion, is that the younger man does not shit his pants when shells are lobbed into the box. Which they will as it will be Hull’s best chance of winning.
Can’t work. Can’t sleep.
What’s left?
DRINK. 😎
Cheers ‘H, glad you had a good day, thanks for the report.
With N7 on the keepers. Almost certainly will be Sczcz, (the precedent was set in 02), but both will do a fine job, so it’s all a bit meh.
With Bath on the anticipated selection (minus the additional 12th man TR7 🙂 )
Hilarious bollocks still being spouted on Suarezzzzz. They didn’t want to sell to us. Simple as that. Give it up lad.
Tabs knows . Liverpool wouldn’t sell which suggests buy- out clauses aren’t very effective. End of I think.
I thought Fab was nailed on for the Final place but you lot have persuaded me otherwise.
The team picks itself otherwise
With a bench
Fab/ Ches
Corporal
Nacho
TV5
TR7
LJW
Sanogo ( or Ox if fit)
I notice Sanogo wasn’t in the provisional squad I saw. Oversight or another injury?
COYWG!
Think Flamini will make the bench ttg. If Sanogo is fit the last spot on the bench could end up being a tough choice between Jack and Ox. Don’t think both full backs will make the bench. Another tough choice.
Well deserved Holic !
Hope you had a great day, let me change that of course you had a great day and well deserved as said.
Looks like Bendtner was in the training sessions too.
@ Aussie,
I totally agree that if we had brought him we would have won the league. I agree that we should have fought till the bitter end to buy him as well but as i told in the last post, we are we and we stick to our ways right or wrong and i for one support the club on it but yes modern day world does not work like that.
Fabianski it should be in the finals, he leaves or not, he has got us there and he needs to be there. I for one will have him on merit as well because as much as woj is first choice i am sick worried that he will have that one moment of madness which may make us cry life long. He is very good and stats dont lie but we all know he has that one moment where he wants the spotlight.
Even now that calamity between him and kos in the carling cup final haunts me.
Lets be positive, whoever plays, we play 60% of our potential, we should beat them. Well give it 100% guys and thrash them please.
One last thing how can we here in India avail that book? I would loveto buy that but cant see it anywhere online as well.

Vinay @72, book goes on sale online next week.
Oh dear.
Our transfer ‘strategy’ is a matter of opinion like most other things.
Constant and utterly tedious speculation which is presented as ‘fact’ about a transfer that didn’t happen , and then used as an ill-informed stick to beat the club with, is not. It is bollocks, especially when (a) any passing knowledge of what actually went down is in direct contravention of said speculation or ‘facts’ and (b) there is a cup final in 48 hours time and no-one gives a flying fuck.
Suarez isn’t coming to Arsenal. Liverpool wouldn’t sell him to Arsenal. Deal with it and move on.

Who’s wearing a yellow ribbon?
The surgeon must have removed my nervous system along with the knee as I have to say I’m totally relaxed about Saturday.
There is a gulf in class between the two teams that has to show in our favour. If this squad is ever going to achieve what we all hope, they simply have to lift this cup.

Heh Frock Shock 😯
I posted this post cut off on the last drinks;
The way I see it is that Hull have got absolutly nothing to lose, they are massive underdogs, have been pretty poor in the last few games, in fact they haven’t won since scraping past Shefield in the semis, drawing with an awful Fulham and losing away to Manure and Villa, while being defeated on home turf by Everton and ofcourse us in the “dress rehersal”. Except it wasn’t really a “dress rehersal” was it, because the two players that started upfront for them are ineligable to play in the cup final meaning that they are even weaker going into Saturday………..
This scares me no end.
I’ve been to four cup finals at Wembley, my record is two wins, two loses.
Victories were against big teams, Manure and L’poo, the losses however came when we were overwhelming favourites against Ipswich and Wet Spam, the latter was a second division club at the time.
Ofcourse that was all a long time ago, but Birmingham, who got relegated in the same season, is stiill pretty fresh in the memory. To half inch a George Michael lyric…..
This young gun says caution pays.
Are we signing Frock? Big German MFer? Sammer Frock perchance?
Wise words there H2H – feeling very cautious here. Can I have some of your pills Trev?
Heh, Herr Frock.
Trev@91: There was also a gulf in class between City and Wigan.
Twice.
“It’s a funny old game.”

Well, it’s just how I feel.
I know all the cautionary tales and I’ve been present at far too many Wembley losses but I don’t care.
We will win this.
Afternoon all. Much needed chuckling here, thank you 🙂

Nice one guv’.

Hi Trev , hope all well. How’s the leg? Not so much a twitter break as a t’internet break. Just thought I’d see how it all panned out. Liking your confidence, this time boys … this time!
Thx for the assist H2H.
I’m taking it as good omen.
Well said cba, well said.
No need for us to take sartorial lessons from a nation of kilts 😉
Heh Tabs, is that the Trotter equation you’re using there? 😉
*Waves to Wolfie
Kilts ?
Just call a frock a frock. 😉
Exactly that H2H 🙂
*waves back and blushes*
Trev 🙂
All rational thinking tells us it would be a massive, massive upset if we lost on Saturday – which is exactly why I am so nervous, probably. I want us to win this cup so much.
Frock Jock Shock 😯 😯
Or….
Frock Shock Jock,
From a tilt of the kilt.
I’m with Trev – we’re winning this.
I know I’ll look a twat now if we don’t. I still don’t care.
The mind drifts back to 2011, but this isn’t 2011. We’re not missing key players through injury. We’re not still in three other competitions and with half our concentration elsewhere. We don’t have half the squad digging escape tunnels.
We’re in form, we’ve got most of the lads fit, and we’ve all the tools required to do the job.
I will quite probably be shitting bricks at 5pm on Saturday, but right now I’m bang up for it – roll on kick off!
COYG
Given N7’s predictions record this season, I must say I now feel a bit better seeing that he’s backed us to win.
Samuel Eto’o has hit out at Jose Mourinho, telling africanfootball.com the Chelsea manager is “a fool” for questioning his age.
“Today, I am 33 years old and it is not because a fool called me an old man that you must believe it,” Eto’o said. “You may have noticed that the old man was better than the youngsters [at Chelsea].
“I am going to carry on playing in the Champions League. Where? I am not going to tell you, but I am going to carry on playing because physically and mentally I feel great. Some believe I am going to retire in the United States or in the Middle East, but I have regained the joy of the Champions League.
http://www.espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1822321/samuel-etoo-calls-chelsea-boss-jose-mourinho-fool-following-age-remark
Eto’o anyone? 😀
Cheers H2H.
I think the players know exactly what this game means, and that they’ve an opportunity to be heroes – the team who finally ended the dry run.
I fully expect to be celebrating on Saturday night.
If you leave aside last season, then us losing on Saturday would be the biggest shock result in an FA Cup final since 1991.
BB.
It would be worth it just to piss off Maureen.
I seriously do not know why players play for the dour one?!
Long may his barren run of trophies continue…and while we’re at that ManU’s too!
..and speaking of ManU’s new incoming coach.. I wonder if they know what they are getting themselves into.. :
http://www.espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/875555/luca-toni:-bayern-boss-louis-van-gaal-showed-us-his-balls
…. at least Moyes was decent enough to spare the players the mental scarring although he probably wish he did now, no doubt!
N7
It may be time to consider to eat some charcoal tonight. Instead of bricks it could be diamonds you’ll shit on saturday 🙂
H2H @120 – thanks a bunch ! 😉
Tabs,
The leg is improving, thanks. Walking without crutches now and getting in the pool more. Still slow and a bit wobbly- not to say painful – but getting there.
BB – Thanks for the van Gaal link. I shall be awaiting his appointment as interim manager before “Giggsy” with some impatience.
I’m keeping my Saturday nerves under control by steadfastly not thinking about the match. You know it makes sense.
COYG WTNM
Heh, sorry Trev, didn’t realise you were so kneedy. 👿
Seriouly though, hope you’re fully recovered and raring to go for the new season.
Good stuff Trev. You’ll be like a new signing in August! 😉
Heh at Feelgood.
With N7. Circs completely different to ’11. Just win Arsenal.
Spot on N7@119, very different circumstances to 2011 and those who remain will be all the more fired up to atone.
BB@121 – I would certainly sign Eto’o
Trev@128 keep up the good work, mate. (I forgive you the rock jibe – as Wolfie would tell you, the pleats are in completely different places)
N7@ 122 – I’d argue Everton beating Man Utd in 1995 was a massive shock too. Not to mention them stuffing the Spuds in the semi-finals that year (ah, good memories of an otherwise horrible season)
Cheers H2H, bath, Tabs.
Rock jibe, bath ?
Suppose Sots keep their rocks under their frocks. 😉
Charlie @ 133
That’s very true, although Utd had just blown the title a few days earlier. I still remember celebrating their belly-flopping a potential double.
Happy days.
I dropped the effin’ eff in Frock, didn’t I Trev?
And you dropped yer effin’ c, didn’t you?
I really don’t know which is worse. 🙂
Heh! I didn’t even notice. 😉
Don’t need to drop anything – just lift. 😉
Cheers Holic and welcome back to some old faces!
Gonna be a right fucking weekend. Youngest makes his Cricket debut for Worthing CC U10’s Saturday morning, at ground for 9.00 – start at 9.30. And then makes his debut for U11’s on the Sunday. Same fucking timing!
I’s gonna be a bear with a seriously sore head that morning, I tells y’all.
She wore, She wore …
She did indeed, Esso.
You have an excellent weekend in store, mate.
Just make sure you’ve got the Ibuprofen and Berocca in for Sunday morning. 🙂
She said it’s for The Arsenal
And we’re going to Wembley…..
Wemberlee, Wemberlee…
I’m in the same relaxed state of mind as Trev.
We are several classes better than this mob.
Most of the population have decided not to watch because they dread us winning.
If we can score early we will mash them.
If we can’t we will mash them
If we need a late goal we will mash them
If it goes to extra time we will mash them
And penalties?. See previously
