Will Arsenal Get On Their Bike At The Toon?
Aug 28th, 2015 by 'holic
“Maybe we are not firing on all cylinders at the moment. By definition, finishing is a little bit cyclical and it goes in cycles.”
Arsene Wenger in reflective mood ahead of a Saturday lunchtime trip to the north-east, one not entirely appreciated by the traveling faithful, but our allocation is again sold out, and at least it isn’t another Monday night game.
It’s a handy analogy that the boss is using. The quicker you go on a cycle, the sooner you tend to get where you want to go. Counter-attacking at pace is something we did on occasion at Selhurst Park on our previous away day and that may require a rethink of the attacking options we field at whatever St James’ Park is called these days. We certainly need to quickly put together a chain (I’m sorry) of wins to keep pace with those currently occupying the top League places.
It is however defensive considerations that will most occupy Arsene’s mind ahead of the match. Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker remain doubtful after both surprisingly missed the goal-less draw against Liverpool on Monday night. The former is thought to be the likelier of the two to be fit and it would be a comfort to many if he can line up alongside Gabriel, a defender who looks close to regular first team football.
There is a school of thought emerging that Arsene should consider sacrificing either Santi Cazorla or Aaron Ramsey to free a space for either Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Theo Walcott to get paint on their boots on the right flank. The counter argument is that Rambo cutting inside so often presents opportunities for Hector Bellerin to advance and whip in crosses on which Olivier Giroud can feast.
In truth the same could happen with any of the three options as both Theo and the Ox look to nip inside a fair bit themselves, particularly the former.ย It is possible if both his preferred central defenders again miss out that Arsene will not want to experiment further forward as well.
Newcastle come into the match seeking a first Premier League win under Steve McClaren. On the opening day of the season they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Southampton, and followed up with trips to Swansea, where they were beaten 2-0, and Old Trafford, where they comfortably held Manchester United to secure a second League point.
Moussa Sissoko could featureย in midfield for the Geordies after missing their last two matches withย a groin injury. New signing from Marseille,ย Florian Thauvin, is tipped for a start on the wing after helping his team to a 4-1 COCup win against Northampton in midweek.
The ‘holic Pound
The ‘holic pound is encouraged by our recent record at Newcastle, a far cry from my formative years when it was most definitely a bogey ground. It is now almost ten years since Nolberto Solano (remember him?) became the last man to score a home winner against the Gunners. Olivier Giroud has feasted on them somewhat, with eight goals in six matches against them, including a brace in both League meetings last season. I’m backing a repeat of last season’s 1-2 triumph, and why not. That scoreline pocketed me a tidy little bonus at Selhurst Park and 8/1 is again the best price on that.
All that remains is to wish those of you rising at sparrowfart to board the first trains north a safe and enjoyable day. The rest of us will be with you in spirit (single malt in my case, obviously!).
Have a great one, ‘holics.

Thanks for the preview and I remain one of those terrified we will see Chambers at CB tomorrow . We need to get some momentum going with Chelsea on the horizon. I like the 2-1 the Holic Pound suggests and think if Koscielny plays it may even be 2-0 to us.
Too many good players is a nice problem to have. Let’s hope Wenger has complicated his life even further by the time the window closes
Need to get our mojo back, that’s for sure.
*goes to read the Guvna’s pearls*
I just hope if they do try to get on the bike, nobody’s had the wheels.
I hope we get on the bike and it’s so good it has those flicky things in the spokes, made out of old playing cards, that make it sound like you’re being chased down the road by someone on speed wearing rusty calipers.
I wonder if the old romantic spirit in Mr Wenger will make him choose Debuchy at RB for his return visit to the Sports Direct Final Sale Stadium?
It would certainly allow him to add the defensively less orientated AOC or Feo on the right with a more solid RB and experienced behind them.
Alternatively he might put him in as RCB as the combined inexperience of HB and CC on the right side of the defence v the Dippers added to the first half angst. On balance I suspect that Kos will not make it and mindful of the impact on a young player’s maorale he will stick with CC and add the experience of Debuchy alongside him on his flank.
Whoever makes the cut, they should be able to handle the bars of black and white. *gets coat*

Beautiful writeup. 2-1 looks a good bet but honestly any win is welcome. If we play the way we played at palace, 8-3 also looks likely.
I like the away games, just sense the team relaxes a lot more and play their game than at home.
I believe it will be the same team as pool with the only exception being ramsey replaced by theo/ox. Not a bad thing to happen with utmost respect to Aaron.
With the international break coming up, a win will soothen a lot of nerves.

I don’t think the players relax more away from home – support at The Emirates has been hugely imoroved.
Away from home we don’t often play against five or six across the back and another four across the middle.

Top of the evening to you, cba, old chap!
It seems that we are after Manuel Ferarra, apparently the deal is agreed. Big fan of the Frenchman, great career so far, he will do wonders with Giroud upfront.
We signed Kalou yet? Stopila Sunzu maybe?
Missed you t’other night when there was a bit of Goonery Foolery going on. Cynic thought you might have brought some sanity to proceedings.
Do you have a reputable source for Ferarra, Lurky? I haven’t seen him outside the Ambassador’s party. ๐
The Holic Pound on Three-n-One would have sped this preview along the track quite nicely. ๐ 1-2 sounds about right though. Never an easy place to go and I still have nightmares over the 4-4 fiasco.
Not worried at all by the prospect of Chambers and Gabriel at the centre of the defence. They’ll both do fine, as they did in the second half on Monday night.

It seems from a Google search that Manuel Ferrara is known for his skills in the horizontal position. Markedly less sophisticated than Ferrero Rocher even though they taste like cardboard. I am sure that if he needs to, HFB will find an opening in the same industry as Manuel after he hangs up his boots. ๐

Nice preview H. To be honest I have no idea what side will turn up tomorrow or what to expect. It’s been amusing reading all of the comments about Chambers this week. Last season I was told in no uncertain terms that he had not been bought as a right back but as a top class centre back in the making. Now when he is mentioned in the role it appears to be time to bolt all of the doors.
AW has promised that he has a team working very hard both day and night to ensure that the right players are brought into the club. Only a little while longer to wait and see if they are earning their vast wages or if they should be heading for the dole queue.
To those travelling, safe journey. Nice to see such a lengthy trip is scheduled for an early kick off? Great to see that the fans still come high up on the list of priorities.

While I’d like to give Cal another chance at CD, perhaps we should wait until one of the missing senior CDs returns. Didn’t we find Nacho a more than competent fill-in for Kos last season, with Gibbs at LB? That would be my preference now.
In attack surely Theo has to get on the field. Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t most here surprised by how well he played when he finally got a chance at the tail-end of last season? Scoring a goal a game (when he started). For mine it’s just a case of where he plays, and RW is the right spot, imo, with OG at CF.
I’d also give serious consideration benching รzil and starting Ox in the middle with Rambo in a more gung-ho attack. Dennis knows we need more oooomph in mid-field.
Time for Alexis to actually deliver as well. He’s looked busy so far, but ineffective with either shooting or assisting. He’s much better than that.
It will be interesting to have a look at the Magpies Vurnon Anita, the kind of bargain price DMF we might have considered an option. He looks useful to me.
Unfortunately I can see another draw, but judging by my fantasy team’s progress what do I know? No need to answer that….

I couldn’t believe what I read when I saw a report about how Wenger was having a go at Neville for talking without teaching people anything. If he really was having a crack at Neville he picked the wrong target. Neville is easily the best and most knowledgable pundit of all. By miles.
Steve @ 63
Deja-vu here.
McClintock, Keown, Adams, Vieira – all leaders with the passion to drive their teams to find a way to win. There is nobody in the current squad with the credentials to fulfil this need.
In the Australian vernacular we need someone “with a bit of mongrel.”
I asked in this bar at the end of last season for Arsene to find us one. Unfortunately, so far, he hasn’t and we appear destined to continue to relive the recent past – attractive football, the odd cup but no title and definitely no big ears.
UTA.
O-Dog: I’m looking at a similar lineup. I see a lot of people wanting to drop Rambo for Ox, which I don’t understand. Rambo is as good as anyone on the team, if not better, at striking the ball. Plus he hasn’t met a shot he didn’t like and can shoot with both feet. My biggest frustration with Ozil is his unwillingness to strike combined with ability to only strike with his left foot. Against Poo he had at least one opportunity in the box to side foot the ball into the back of net but because the ball came to him on his right foot, he had to take a touch to his left foot and by that time a defender was in position to block the shot. Combine that with Rambo’s work rate and defending (Ox has a lot to learn about defending), and it seems a waste for Rambo to be out on the wing.
Just my opinion, but if Rambo is played in the central midfield position and stays healthy (which means he occasionally has to be rotated out of the lineup), he could one of the top 5 midfielders in Europe.
Wotcher folks. Cheers for the preview H!
My antipathy to the current football regime of gross commercialisation with scant regard paid to the travails of actual match day fans is well documented.
I enjoyed the good old days more. Far, far more. But I have to question if fans were treated any better, before they became ‘customers’, or ‘upticks’ on some godforsaken management accountant’s latest piece of excel wizardry. We were largely treated as an embarrassment by all and sundry, including the clubs themselves. Penned in like animals and herded around with no tolerance, and in the case of Hillsborough straight to the abattoir.
Its different today in many, many ways. But ‘better’ or ‘worse’? Not sure anymore, more’s the pity.
Anyways, come on you Arsenal today! There’s still plenty of us whose week revolves around those 90 minutes at the weekend; even if they rarely commence at 3.00 P.M. on a Saturday, in this day and age.
Nice perspective there Esso. Oft forgotten in our wistful memories of the ‘good ol’ days’.
cba @49, I’m a Dandy, pal.
Wenger has tarnished, blemished and taken the piss out of the club now it’s time for fans too fight back and take the piss out of him.

seagulls the size of light aircraft
Pretty generic stuff from Neville in the Telegraph article in my opinion. He says we need “power, pace and strength” – well with Alexis, the Ox, Walcott and Ozil, we have arguably the fastest front-line in the upper reaches of the Premier League (not to mention Ramsey’s admirable lung-busting stamina) – hence why teams sit back against us and deny us any space behind at the Emirates. And with guys like Coquelin and Giroud – not to mention Per, Gabriel, Kos etc – we’re badass enough in terms of strength. I think Neville’s regurgitating a passรฉ argument that our detractors have often rightfully used against in the last half-dozen years or so, but which has become largely redundant since Coquelin broke into the side – we’re probably top of the Premier League for 2015, and certainly don’t concede as many goals as we did before his renaissance.
The more pressing area Neville should be looking at is where are the goals coming from in our midfield (then he can dredge up comparisons to better Arsenal teams of yore), whether our current roster of strikers are quite up to title-winning standard, and what the fuck we do if/when Coquelin picks up a medium/long-term injury….
*tries to resist but fails*
@70 (this could well change)
I should stick to the biscuit game mate. Spunk gargler like you should be well good at that.
@64 Oskar
Why bother benching Ozil, if I am Arsene I will send him on loan. Bolton or WBA my preferred destination. To toughen up. Or even better, send him to the army, the little prick needs to show some fighting on the pitch.
@67 ecg
For all the running Ramsey does, Belerin is often exposed and on his own while defending. It is true that Ramsey runs a lot, but more clever and experienced players usually tend to position better then him, to avoid running all over the place.
He is so bad in positioning on the pitch and lack awareness of opp players that even Arsene doesn’t really know what his best position is and orders him to roam across the pitch, finding pockets of space and exploring them.
Sometimes it works and he scores beautiful goals and assists, sometimes it doesn’t and all he does is interfere the play, taking wrong positions, unnecessary slowing down the tempo, making many mistakes in the process. It is not a coincidence that he is one of the most dispossessed players in the league.
As it is said to many times, he needs to simplify his game and not to be involved in the building of the attacks as much as he is at the moment and as much as he wants to be.
He is a good finisher and a running machine, so I see him more as an outlet then a creator of our attacks. But it is clear that he wants to be more than that, he wants to be a second playmaker, Arsene often pleases his wishes and that is where I think the problem is.
Essooooooo!
Biscuits and spunk gurgling… did you go to public school? ๐

Oh hang on, that was Ollie Reed in Women in Love not Tom Brown’s Schooldays.
It’s too early for this shit.
For all the running Ramsey does, Belerin is often exposed and on his own while defending.
And attacking, Lurky. You watch any game where Ramsey is deployed right and we’re struggling to score (like Liverpool for example) and the odds are he will be nowhere to be seen when Coquelin is looking to pass wide. Le Coq has to turn left again so often he’s decided to vote for Jeremy Corbyn to lead Labour.

Most telling statistics from the Premier League to date this season:
Most shots attempted: Arsenal (64)
Fewest goals scored: Arsenal (2)
Here’s hoping for a return to the law of averages today, on the latter.
No Ozil today and no Giroud.
I like the look of this team I have to say. Lots of pace in there, Ramsey not playing wide. Less tippy tap and more direct, hopefully.

Thought a MOTW like yersel’ would recognise the abbreviated reference.
Although if having Joel Campbell on the bench doesn’t make Wenger go out and buy a striker, nothing will. That’s not intended to be an “Oh no, that twat” remark, more a comment that he’s never looked by being a part of the team since he got here, and there he is on the bench.
looked by?
looked like, I mean.
A change was required. Let’s see what this group can achieve. Holding the ball up front will be a major problem but pace there will be.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, Cynic @86.
Well I’m very excited about the set up today. I think the Kos & Gabby partnership has serious potential. Rambo back at 8, Caz at 10, Oxlade on the wing…….all sounds about right to me. It’ll be very interesting to see how we play but we should be much more efficient.

Straight red and rightly so. Leg breaking challenge. Mitrovic first of many red cards in the PL.

Le Coq needs to be very careful. Plenty of scope for Mariner to dole out reds and silly second yellas.
Theo our best finisher…

Well well well.
Expected a lot more from Oxlade to be honest, I am very disappointed so far. We need Giroud in the second half.
How about taking a few more shots ffs.

Good old OX. At least he’s not afraid to shoot.
Who knew you could score by shooting the damn ball?
Alexis is having his worst game by far. Needs to come off, but who do you put on instead?
Can we move the ball any slower?
We need to score that second goal fast.
Come on!!!!
Against ten men and this is how we play? They might still throw this game away.
Can’t seem to be able to find our way through despite playing a ten man team with two guys already on a yello in the first fifteen minutes. Strange. Should have scored four goals already. Damn.
We need to do everything faster.
I have to admit, I cursed when I tuned in to BT Sport and heard the voices of Robbie Savage and Glen Hoddle co-commentating. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by their honesity and impartiality!
whew
3pts but not good enough am sorry.
That’s winning ugly.
Ah well…..three points.
One “non-own-goal” goal in four premiership fixtures. Time to spend some ยฃ ?
Very hard to select a MotM in this one. I’d be tempted to pick the Kos/Gabriel axis. Kos just makes a world of difference, and Gabriel made some nice tackles.
And it seems that as Santi goes, so does the side. When he’s dribbling and moving himself and the ball quickly, things just hum. And when it’s not there, the stagnation is overwhelming.
A disallowed goal v Dippers and a non-given 100% pen.
Coquelin or Gabriel MOTM today for me.
If we don’t sign a decent goalscoring striker it will be another top-4 battle I’m afraid.
Just a clumsy stamp on the foot. Very harsh for a straight red. Says McClaren.
Our boys stay on their feet. They’re honest and don’t roll around on the ground.
I feel that Kos/Gabriel partnership not only makes us defensively better then any other, it allows us to try different formations and tactics. We can even play a high line without that much fear then when Per is there.
Also it enables Kos to try and pull some attacks from the back, something he rarely does when Per is there. I am sure that we will see him at opposition half more this year.
Important win and three precious points. Ramsey second half display is my MOTM performance, Coq imperious as ever, both fullbacks strong.
Very disappointed from the Ox’s display, expect more from him, even the goal was a lucky deflection. He will be better.
Even though the effort was there this was Alexis worst game in our shirt, which is not a worrying thing, because we all know what that man is capable of.
Applauds Esso. ๐ I’m leaving that one there so everyone can see what a bitter twat our chum is.
Next opponent is Stoke. They are down two men on straight reds (Affelay and that front bottom Charlie Adam) in the first half.
