Iwobi And Gunners Shine At Goodison
Mar 19th, 2016 by 'holic
Accepting before kick-off that we had no more room for manoeuvre, Arsene Wenger went with the team that played either side of half-time in Barcelona. Francis Coquelin obviously included for the injured Mathieu Flamini, and a deserved Premier League debut for Alex Iwobi.
There being no hiding place left it was important we made an impression early on, but with less than seventy seconds gone Coleman turned a near post corner against that post. Less than a minute Danny Welbeck blocked a clearance against the upright at the other end.
Almost immediately corners were traded too, and from ours the unmarked Gabriel blazed the ball over. Something had to crack, and thankfully it was Everton in the 7th minute. Mesut Ozil and Alexis combined to put Danny Welbeck in behind the back four and the England international finished for his fourth goal in eight games since returning from injury.
Everton 0-1 Arsenal
Alex Iwobi had a chance to double the advantage within a minute but hit it straight at Robles. With the help of an offside flag when Lukaku sought to respond we set about getting control of the contest. With some quick and precise passing we had silenced the home crowd by the middle of the half.
Iwobi and Ozil fashioned a chance for the latter that Jagielka managed to block. The thought hung in the air that we would need a second goal while in control, and was reinforced when Ospina had to dive to his left to deny Besic an equaliser.
Arsenal were denied a blatant penalty when Alexis was tripped by Besic. Mark Clattenburg is one of only two PGMOL officials I rate, but it was the second Arsenal match in a row where he dropped a clanger.
Four minutes before the break a long ball from Hector Bellerin sent Iwobi scampering through from his own half to finish with a nutmeg on Robles. The pitchside mic picked him up screaming “It’s in the bag” to all and sundry. It was no more than the young man, and the Gunners, deserved.
Everton 0-2 Arsenal
Put through again Iwobi sliced wide of the target, and the whistle brought to an end Arsenal’s best half of football in many a moon.
Everton acted quickly to strengthen at the back, bringing Stones on for Besic. It didn’t immediately stem the tide and Ozil saw his effort blocked from an Alexis cut-back. Bad challenges by Cleverley on Elneny, and Lennon on Coquelin, went unpunished as the hosts attempted to force themselves back into the game.
Coquelin was the unlikely provider of the next attempt on goal but he lifted his volley over the bar. Another break ended when Bellerin took a swinging arm to the face from Funes Mori. Nothing given. Clattenburg was having a dreadful day.
A rare Everton break saw Ospina and Lukaku collide heavily. Limping and looking groggy the Columbian continued after a lengthy stoppage, and the Gunners found themselves on the back foot for the first time since the opening minute.
With over a quarter of an hour to go Ozil limped off after another late challenge missed by Clattenburg. He and Welbeck made way for Kieran Gibbs and Olivier Giroud. Coleman escaped with two warnings and no card for challenges on Coquelin and Nacho Monreal.
Arsenal broke out and Giroud was tripped off the ball by Funes Mori in front of the myopic Clattenburg. Again, astonishingly, nothing given. A corner followed from which Giroud headed home only for the award of a free-kick for a nudge by Iwobi on Jagielka, who tumbled theatrically.
Iwobi made his last contibution with a break that ended in a failed attempt to pick out Alexis and he was withdrawn to a standing ovation from the again outstanding travelling Gooners to be replaced by Calum Chambers. Everton’s best chance to date fell to Lukaku, but he headed straight at the recovered Ospina. Giroud was denied again as he sought to set the seal on an impressive triumph.
All in all this was a very pleasing return to form by the Gunners at the last possible moment. The passing and movement was much better than we have seen of late, particularly in the first hour or so. A little tiredness creeping in at the end can be forgiven after Barca.
For a couple of hours at least Leicester had been hauled back into view. Let’s enjoy that in the coming days and appreciate the timely return to form. Iwobi was nominated as man of the match, but I’m sure he would understand me saying I thought we had eleven of those today.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, ‘holics.

Now that, ‘Holic, was quick.
2-0!
Hope that Ospina and Ozil will both be available for our next match.
😀
The BB above is an imposter. There is only one BB and that’s me, formerly of Arsenal-Land.
White lightning, Goonerholic! I was willing them to score for that elusive 1-2 scoreline that the Holic Pound keeps pursuing. Good stuff.
Well, that was fast Holic. Not as fast as Welbeck or Iwobi, but still good enough.
It was a great win and more importantly great performance.
How many Elneny’s were out there on the pitch? I sometimes counted at least four in attack, middle, on the flanks and defense. He was everywhere ffs, what a massive, massive upgrade from Ramsey.
And my next shirt will have Iwoby name on it. He is gonna be an Arsenal great, player for the coming decade.
Nice one ‘h!
Well, wasn’t that the much hoped-for confident performance, especially in the first half! Second half appeared more fatigue-related after Barcelona midweek. The interlull will help recovery and hopefully Ospina and Ozil aren’t long-term injured. Everton well and truly humbled at home but must say that Everton where poor because Lukaku was kept quiet by Kos and Gabriel – our Centre-back pairing were superb! Could this be the bastardly mean, quick and strong central defensive partnership we’ve been crying out for?! I f**king hope so.
The beautiful game may be back with the Gunners and now to kick-it-on to pick up all of the remaining points till the season’s end!
As I said some months back; Iwobi is a “Worldly” in the making and the modern game needs a strong and mobile striker just like Welbeck who was equally impressive!
Now to cheer on Palace and Bournmouth. Up the Arse!
Come On You Beautiful Gunners!
Great report in double quick time Holic
May I refer drinkers to my post at 28 yesterday.
I really fancy us to finish this season really strongly. We did much better at Barcelona than we were given credit for . The inclusion of Elneny, Iwobi and Welbeck has transformed the side. Ramsey will find it very hard to get back in. Apart from the fact that there always looks to be an own goal in Gabriel ( a slice over the goalie’s head ) I thought we looked very secure and while I think Leicester are home and hosed I think we will finish second well above the tiny Totts who will go into free fall.
Given that we played on Wednesday against Barcelona away that was a phenomenal result. Wenger can still motivate this team and see a way forward . I hope he sticks it to the interviewers if they refer to that fucking banner
Steve! Great to see you here. The original and best. 🙂
Cheers Holic.
That’s the Arsenal that’s gone missing these past few weeks. As you rightly say guvna, all 11 deserve plaudits today…no weak link on the park today. I’m liking the Cockney midfield – they seem the most balanced we’ve had all season and allows the creative hub further forward to flourish.
The chase is on!!
Iwobi is, apparently, the first outfield player AW has picked not to have any of the letters that spell Arsenal in his surname.
Great quick match report Guvna,
Well done lads you made me proud!
Second half not to my liking but hey, we held up well considering Clattenberg was totally against us. But we didn’t need his assistance so fuck him.
Come on Arsenal! Win the next game!
Ref was lenient to say the least.. !
Probably used up his quota of cards for the season already.
Tired players but well deserved win despite Everton’s absence.
Alexis was so tired he had to sit in the stands… 😀
Great write up, Holic. We saw precisely the same game.
Strong finish, please. This remains our best chance of the title in a good long while. Just focus on catching Spurs, and the rest will come.

The real BB says: down to your quick but accurate match report and the fact that we actually won for s change and didn’t have to storm off with the dog for a walk ! Enjoy the rest of your afternoon.
CBA @18,
Heh! 😀 Mad as a hatter wearing a couple, or three, of his bowlers!
Obi-Wan Iwobi: may the force continue to be with you.
I can see AW flogging this lineup. Out of everything apart from the league, no distractions. 8 fixtures, no excuses.
And Lurky, if the shop gives you an “Iwoby” shirt, get a refund.
Agreed with TTG and Lurky about Elneny’s massive impact on our midfield. Keep him in the team Arsene, please. He, Welbeck and Iwobi provided just the shot in the arm we desperately needed. 😀 😀
Clattenburg’s favorite is Seamus Coleman. Two consecutive yellows those should have been. 🙁 🙁
COYG COYG COYG
Fortunately caught the game from our hotel room in the big apple … despite protestations from the mother and the child. 🙂
Elneny looks to be a perfect signing as he complements both Coquelin and Rambo, and shows enough intelligence and composure to be able to play the even Coquelin role — but with a more progressive interpretation — when Santi returns.
Much better from Gabriel. He has all the ingredients and a consistent run next to the masterful Kos would help him immensely.
For strikers to be able to be fast and very quick-footed now is becoming an absolute must in modern football. Giroud has given us great service over the years and had quite a few brilliant matches, but not being fast to begin with and approaching thirty he will see less and less of the starting line-up. Welbeck and Iwobi were superb in the first half. Especially Iwobi.
Finally, a big fuck you to the two-faced hypocritical opposition manager and the useless referee. Martinez always talks nice and always sets up his team with a thuggish formula against us. There were some borderline dangerous off-the-ball challenges that could have resulted in serious damages to Kos or Alexis or Bellerin.
And how was Giroud’s goal not allowed to stand and why didn’t Alexis get a penalty and Coleman and Mori avoided yellow cards!
Thought the defence played really well today. Kos and Gabriel had Lukaku in their pocket for most of the game.
Don’t understand why Ospina played on. He was obviously in discomfort. It wouldn’t have been bad to give Macey some playing time while we were two up.
And agree with the compliments for Elneny. He looks a player.

Having set up the win in the first half, we were very professional in the second. Everton’s danger players were snuffed out by our two midfielders and our two centre backs. Well played you Gunners, the new banner totally irresponsible, didn’t those involved appreciate the splendid efforts of the previous 95mins, obviously not!
I’m with Arsene and the team, let’s have another performance like it in two weeks and put Watford in their place.
COYRs
Okay. So whose fault is it this week. Not seen any of the game yet so are we blaming the officials? Don’t tell me, it’s the injuries again? How many times are we going to use that as an excuse??? Really.
What? What was that? We won a game? We played well, scored twice and won away from home? Awesome. World domination is back on. Told you so. Always been world class.
???
How nice it is to feast on 3 delicious well earned points – Far more enjoyable than swallowing another dollop of disappointment !!
Up The Arse !
Holic@9. Thank you. There is only one.
I’m guessing you knew I would be in later. In various parts of my line of business we call that a pre-emptive strike.
?
Nice one, Holic !
Superb performance today, especially so soon after Wednesday evening.
Excellent energy, movement, determination to get to the ball first, good touch, great finishing – everything that has been recently lacking.
Iwobi is, not ‘will be’, a player. Ozil superb, Elneny excellent. No weakness today – churlish to mention Gabriel’s love of a sliced clearance ?
We do get the ball moving so much quicker without Mertesacker, Gibbs and Ramsey. It looked like our game had a plan at last.
Great stuff. Proves that Kroenke, not Wenger, is the problem if the manager can get a performance like that out of the team so soon after the game in mid-week.
Steve T,
You won’t want to hear it but Clattenberg was shocking today. Stonewall penalty turned down and endless cynical Everton fouling ignored.
I can say it today cos we won. ???
Chris, hope you found my sincere regards re Oskar in the previous bar.
Sad loss. Amazing mates, dogs.
I have a strong feeling that Bournemouth will get something at the Swamp tomorrow, maybe all three points and as I keep pointing out I’m on fire prediction- wise at the moment.
If only Leicester would stop doing an impression of Liverpool in the 80s we could dream of the title. I suspect they will find home games more taxing in the run- in. So might we but I just think we will hit a purple patch. Very optimistic. Arsene is the master of reinvention. He has found a way of playing that really gives us fluidity at the moment.
@TTG
We need to ignore Leicester for now and just chase Spurs. We have incentive enough to get ahead of them, they have a tough run ahead and if and when we do manage to draw them in we can see where we are with the Foxes.
Leicester’s last three games are Old Trafford, Everton at home and Stamford Bridge on the final day. They could very easily drop five or six points in those three, with the pressure on.
Keep slogging away, Arsenal. It may yet come.

Trev@33: Whoever told Ramsey that it was required for an Arsenal holding midfielder to turn a full circle before passing the ball, forgot to pass that on to Elneny.
Ned, whoever that was is still turning in a circle, waiting to release the information…
Fine report maestro and another astonishingly brisk one.
Nice to see a balanced, quick and incisive Arsenal team.
If the referee hadn’t been playing for Everton today we would have given them an embarrassing thumping. Clattenberg was an utter disgrace again today.
Iwobi is a top prospect and thoroughly deserved his goal and MotM award but I agree that we had 11 heroes today.
I agree with N7. Take each game as it comes, work as hard as today, treat each as a cup final and we will reel the Marshdwellers for sure. With a bit of luck we will also reel in Lester. Believe.
COYG
Nice new chant for Alex Iwobi too.
I also liked this one:
http://news.arseblog.com/2016/03/travelling-gooners-target-kroenke-with-chant/
Ned @40, if he doesn’t do that (a full circle) he will lose the ball the very same moment, because he usually lacks basic ideas what to do with it, and always invites a pressure on himself and on the team.
Don’t want to talk about player that is out injured and haven’t played this game, but watching Elneny everyone can see what Ramsey actually lacks. Pass quickly and run into open space to receive the ball. And do it again. And again. And do it quickly, don’t try to be smart, don’t try to be elegant, just pass the stupid ball and make a clever run.
That’s it. Whenever you have the ball. It’s simple really, why overcomplicating? Can’t see him anywhere near the first team if we are serious of doing something this season if I am brutally honest. And I hope it is about time and not to late for it.
Just win the next ‘cup final’. Don’t think about anything or anyone else. It’s all about winning the next game.
N7
Absolutely right in your advice. I actually think they may find home games against anybody very tough . But let’s haul in those impostors up the road.
Lurky
I was a huge Ramsey fan and he impressed me so much when he broke into the team but he has had one brilliant season and three of the last four have been very average. He is not bringing much to the party compared with Elneny. If Barca want to buy him for £50 m I will drive him to Gatwick. If he wants to go from Heathrow he will have to pay for the diesel though.
SCG@41: 🙂
Lurky@44: Elneny has clearly listened to you.
Great performance and timely victory today. I like the personnel and system Wenger has stumbled/decided upon: it’s got more mobility and physicality than the insipid version from the previous couple of months.
Agree with the general consensus that Iwobi, Welbeck and Elneny add a lot to our side because they pass and move so quickly. Also think Gabriel deserves a quick mention too. He’s come in for a fair amount of stick these last few weeks and people have been very quick to judge him by that polar hero/zero paradigm. He bossed Lukaku today, and I felt we saw the signs of a much more effective defensive unit in general today, particularly when protected by a solid midfield line in front of it.
I laugh at people writing Ramsey’s ‘obituary’ though. He’s done a lot for this club – especially in 2013/14, but I would like to see him more in that advanced midfield role (the one Ozil plays) where he’s got less defensive work and playmaking to do, but he can make runs and get on the end of things more. Obviously, Ozil’s the better option in that role but Ramsey would make a good alternative in the case of injury.
As for title prospects, agree with all who say – for the next 2-3 games at least – we just need to make sure we get some wins under our belt and see where that takes it. We’re due (and capable) of a good run. Practically no margin for error if we do harbour hopes for the title, but I’m adamant Leicester will stop drop points, probably quite a few. Their run-in is more difficult than ours (as is Spurs’) and if we can get to 75 points, as I keep on saying, that would probably be enough.

Happy with the team performance, but for me Welbeck put a hell of a fucking shift in, as well as scoring. Starting to like that guy, lots.
From previous drinks, I think it would be entirely appropriate, that the artist formerly known as Oscar the Dog, should revert to that moniker. If he feels up to it. Never forgotten on the drinks, you know.
I will pay the diesel Ttg, no problem.
Gregoir, I actually agree with you that Ramsey best position is indeed at number 10. Far away from our goal the better.
When he receives the ball from Kos or Mert in front of our goal, you can see that the opposition immediately smells the blood as he is usually clearly targeted by most of the managers.
Get him up the pitch and his main attributes start to flourish. But he can’t start instead of Ozil, so just don’t bother start him at all, he could always be a useful player from the bench.

The run of games we have coming could yet yield a nice harvest so any slip ups from Leicester should be pounced upon – Today was must win and win we did – Now watching the Red Rose pulverise the French after witnessing England reach new heights in the cricket – Lovely Weekend 😉
Nice report Holic and thanks, as usual, for the effort and time. If I have one disagreement with you – its the Welbeck Vs Giroud match-up. I can appreciate that Giroud is a better target man and one to hold up the ball – but it’s just not the game Wenger plays or coaches. It is why, imo, Welbz will always be the better option if the choice is going to be fast, fluid, technical football…..which is what we’re all about. Even the traditional English game of getting your head on the ball and putting yourself about doesn’t suit Giroud either. At the same time, I feel Giroud has a place in this panel – just not at the starting post.
I thoroughly enjoyed todays game. For the first time since we beat Manu – we actually looked like a team with a purpose. I agree completely with Ttg, in that Welbz, Iwobi & Elneny have transformed this team. Its no coincidence that honest attitude and work ethic stand for a lot in this league.
Kudos too to all of those who made the trip to Barca. Lars, Tabs, Snowy et al, applause, respect, kudos and envy.
Chris – sorry to hear about your dog. Never easy loosing one of the few good things this life has to offer.
N7 – great post in the last stream….nuanced, balanced and with the usual dose of common sense. All the more reason why we come here.
I wonder if there is any truth to the rumour that Theo earns 130k per week whereas Iwobi earns £850 per week…….??? Fucking laughable.
Joe/57- Iwobi most likely will get a new contract. Still don’t get how Theo got that contract, but that’s modern day football for you.Theo was playing really well during his last contract negotiations and I guess earned what he is been paid now. He has definitely not been the same player since.
Not been the same player is an understatement.
Laughable. Pathetic.
Foxes not stalling yet. That’s three 1-0 wins on the trot, six overall in their season. They must be channeling George Graham. But like others, I reckon that the law of averages will hit them, as will squeaky bums.
Theo got his £100,000 per week deal at a time when the club simoly could not allow another ‘big name’ to leave, having just lost Fabregas, Nasri and van Persie.
Why on earth they agreed to raise it earlier this season to £120,000 is anybody’s guess.
Just not mine.
Ttg, I’ll drive him to any airport he likes – and pay the diesel.
A little musical interlude from the travelling support:

Thanks Trev, your comments in previous drinks are much appreciated. As are those of everyone kind enough to acknowledge Oskar’s passing.
I thought about keeping Oskar the dog as my nickname, or of changing it to Oskar’s memory or similar, but it seemed wrong to have the poor chap credited with my (eccentric, according to some) opinions when he was no longer around to bark disapproval or simply give me that look of recrimination.
No, henceforth Chris will accept all responsibility.
Super win today. And strange too, as if Everton were backing up from a huge effort + travel mid-week while we were the team raring to go after a week’s rest.
I made Elneny motm, and the more I see of him the more he looks like the Ray Parlour type I’ve been wishing to have in the side. All action, everywhere, and looking like he really enjoys his football. Credit too for young Iwobe. I don’t think he’s the finished article just yet, but well on the road to. Özil will need to up his game a notch (score more goals please), or he may find himself back on the left wing. Hope he’s alright after having his ankle scraped by Everton studs.
Hope the cherries give the LWCs the pip tomorrow. And the mancs battle each other into the physio room.

Quiet again tonight. Now for the international break. What to do?
Leicester needs only to win five out of the remaining games to win the league provided Spurs, City n Arsenal did not drop points. How did we get here?
Vardy and Mahrez combine 35 goals
Giroud and Sanchez 19 goal…..
Gone are the days in which we need a 20+ goals striker to spearhead our campaign now all we have is 10+ goals two strikers. It’s a shame
Just managed to watch the MOTD highlights. The first thing that surprised me were the stats. 48% possession and only 3 shots on target in a game, from the radio commentary at least, I thought we had dominated?
Everton were poor but I was impressed with our application and work rate. With Le Coq and Elneny holding the side looks to have more balance and shape to me. I’m not convinced that Welbeck will ever be prolific, but is energy and application will always be a massive plus for me. You can see why Fergie liked him so much. He took his goal very well. Iwobi is the other obvious plus. His confidence is growing game to game and he clearly has ability. Again, his work rate and attitude are again impressive.
In the last 4 days we have seen a midfield player score with a shot from outside the box and a 19 year old score from a fast break. Steps in the right direction I would say.
ABB, lovely to hear from you. I hope you and yours are all well.
CBA. I’m just glad you survived Thursday.
cba@53: damned right. Otd and Clive are Otd and Clive and both top men. But if Chris wants to be Chris in respect for the real Otd then Chris he will be.
Agree with all those who think that Ramsey is most effective when he plays further forward and can get in those devastating runs that take him behind opposition defenses. AW managed to turn Arteta and Santi into DMs, but Aaron was a conversion too far.
Joe@57: Walcott is on a new four-year contact this season running to 2019 that pays him £110,000 a week. I doubt very much that Iwobi is being paid £850 a week. That may have been his Academy contract but the base salary for the first team squad is £10,000 a week. Last October, Iwobi signed a new long-term contract with the club. No details beyond “new and improved contract is very good” but likely to have been a first-team one as it was after he was added to the squad following the Singapore tour.

You could always file your belly button fluff. That’s what I do during interlulls now. First I do it by colour and if it’s a double header of games, I go back to it a couple of days later and re-sort by density.
Or alternatively you could record all the F1 races and watch them on interlull weeks. It’s less interesting than the fluff though.
Next fixture is Watford at home. Built-in revenge factor working for us.
Bad timing on the bike tuning during the interlull means no footy and no bike riding either so must turn to cleaning the chicken poop from the back passage. ??

Interesting, this story about a clause in Guardiola’s contract with Man City that if they miss out on Champions League football that he can decide not to come to the club. Man United could be well positioned to grab him if they take City’s spot.
Bbc as of 4 hours ago says guardiola’s contract has no such clause. Too bad, it would have been interesting.

It would make no sense for Man City to have given Pep a no-CL-football get-out clause. There is no way they’d get a top class replacement in short order and they will already be setting up the deals for the players Pep wants to buy and sell.

Terrible stuff in Belgium.
Istanbul over the weekend, too.
Iwobi has declared for Nigeria. That means ACN every other bloody January.
Sell him now.
🙂
At least he won’t be psychologically damaged by the English press overblowing their expectations then trashing him because he doesn’t deliver the World Cup.
More reason to keep Rosicky on hand for the indefinite future. Surely his body is good to play every January in Iwobi’s spot for the next 7 to 9 years after all the cumulative rest during his injuries over the years. 😀
Good for spare parts only now, I fear.
Given that Iwobi made his debut for Nigeria last October, didn’t he ‘declare’ sometime back?
Non-competitive matches to date. One competitive cap negates any future change. Hence the FA’s last gasp attempt.
after reading about belgium this morning, and ankara last week, and all the other terrible news around the world (not least the rise of trumpf), i was in need of a renewal of purpose.
found one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TdfbpvnbUA

and
Albert Stuivenberg?

I should explain that Albert Stuivenberg is the man sitting next to Louis Van Gaal in the second photo, in case the name doesn’t ring a bell as it didn’t for me.
Funny how the number of drinks drops after a win. >>>>>>>>>>>>
