And Davids Must Score…
Sep 2nd, 2016 by 'holic
It is one of the more unusual previews I have prepared in nine years and fifty weeks of blogging. Not because I am unusually relaxed ahead of what should be a fun match, but because of those likely to be on show. I know there are a couple of enforced absentees but some fabulous names from the past of Arsenal and AC Milan will take the applause and the cheers one more time.
The Arsenal Foundation Legends Match sees Arsenal Legends including Robert Pires, David Seaman and Freddie Ljungberg face Milan Glorie which includes Rossoneri legends Paolo Maldini, Ibrahim Ba and Cafu. The football legends are coming together to raise money to develop football pitches and programmes local to Emirates Stadium and in camps for refugees and internally displaced young people in Jordan and Somalia.

You may recall that back in March the Arsenal Ladies captain, Alex Scott, visited two new pitches provided by the Arsenal Foundation in Iraq, and the training sessions and chats she had with the local children who were benefitting from them.
Asked to comment on the initiatives, Arsenal Chief Executive, Ivan Gazidis, said:
“It’s important that football and clubs like Arsenal use the global passion for the game to make a difference. This game gives us all a chance to create something very special here on the doorstep of Emirates Stadium and in places where children are fleeing war and drought.”
There certainly won’t be a ‘holic pound wasted on the outcome of the match itself. These affairs generally end up something like 6-4, but don’t ask me which way! It is an excuse to reminisce about ‘dreamy’ Bob, Kanuuuuuuu, Mad Jens, ‘We love you’ Freddie, and the like. I see Edgar Davids is playing for Milan, and Gilles Grimaldi is in our squad. Could we see a little bit of history repeating itself ten years on? Oh, please.
Whatever happens I am looking forward to meeting some of you for the first time since May, and even longer. Guinness will be supped, the match will be enjoyed, and most importantly of all the money raised will enable the Arsenal Foundation to continue its amazing work.
Have a great one, ‘holics.

Not there tomorrow, Holic,
But I’ll have Erin in tow next Saturday for Southampton. ?
Hey ho the charity proceeds and all-round fun to be had.
And now for another exciting episode of Impolite Cricket Expressions.
You will, Steve. 🙂
Cheers Esso, it certainly will be. 🙂
cba, there were times I might not have made it but for you crazy beggars. 🙂
Trev, no Saints for me. Bus stop from Fulham next up. 🙁
Go for it bt8. 🙂
For the first time this season, I’d be seeing “the Arsenal” in action without tension.
For those going, have fun. Thanks Guv’nor.
Tension in the arsenal reminds me of the time I had constipation AND the shits. Simultaneously.
It’s a long story. You’d be better off reading War and Peace.
It’ll be carefree entertainment with a wee touch of sentimentality. It’ll be good to see some of these guys in red and white again though some may not last much beyond the warm up. So take your boots Guvna. See you at the usual place.
Cynic, you just reminded me I owe you a mail. It won’t be tomorrow, obviously. Sorry maestro. It has been a seriously busy time.
You betcha bath, although not sure which side I will be. Looking forward to the roars of Kanuuuuuuuuu and the love for Bobby even though he appears to have entered his Papillon phase.
It is for a cause, it will be fun and lucky are those who watch the game live. The rest like me will see it on Arsenal player and sigh at bobby and remember the golden days. What a sight it was watching him glide on the left flank.
Jack’s move still be discussed and questioned. For me all that matters is he getting playing time and coming back here, home.
Kanu Kanu…KANU!!

Goals, not murder tips.
So cba, in his post match interview, said he was feeling Overmars – not over the moon, Brian.
And he went off with a torn hamstring – old habits die hard at the Arsenal !
Freddie was unbelievable.
Hopefully someone is deawing up a new conteact for Kanuuuuuuuuu ??
My ‘r’s – careful – have been replaced by ‘e’s it seems ?
drawing – contract
Loved that Ljungberg-Pires combination at the end. Great to see a silver-haired Limpar as well – that was a pleasant throwback! It’s incredible how each player’s technique, touch, football brain and the way they move remains unaltered from their playing days, it’s just the old fitness and legs that have gone.
Sorry to hear about your ‘r’s, Trev. I was reminded of the time I asked my secretary (it was a loooong time ago, when people had secretaries) to find me the Fisher Clark file in her curiously structured filing system (I’d already searched under F without luck). “Give me a moment Chris,” she said “and I’ll look up my ‘R’s”. After giving that some thought I asked why would it be under R? “Because,” she said “I couldn’t decide if it should go under F or a C, so I filed it under ‘Pending’. No, I didn’t ask for an explanation.
Link @22 didn’t work for me but the match highlights are also on arsenal.com and well worth a watch.
indeed, bt8. some of those moves were beautiful. as was ljungberg to pires…
bt8b: the highlights of the Legends game are indeed well worth a watch. You can take the boys out of Arsenal but you can’t take Arsenal out of the boys.
I see, too, the current team has a no 9 at last. Lucas Perez takes that number and Mustafi gets 20.
Very emotional, the Freddie/Bobby goal had me in tears. It in’t like it used to be, even Arsene was smiling.
Almost brought tears to my eyes too, Delia @31.
That game proved class is permanent and showed the quality throughout our teams of the turn of the century. Both keepers produced memorable efforts to stop the Milan goals and were unlucky with their rebounds. Freddie and Dreamy Bob were outstanding and the goal was the cherry on top of a fine viewing experience. Kanu’s touch and turns are unblemished by age. Overmars scuttling down the wing was a blast from the past until the hamstring stopped him reproducing one of his memorable goals. Petit covered every inch of grass as ever and produced some superb through balls while Gilberto looked as if he could have effectively added his screening and creative skills to our midfield in recent years.
Well done all.
Great day out.
