Where Have This Arsenal Been? Wonderful Night In Milan.
Mar 8th, 2018 by 'holic
Arsene Wenger opted to play a flat back four in Milan. David Ospina returned between the posts behind the back four that struggled at Brighton on Sunday. Aaron Ramsey returned to the midfield in place of Alex Iwobi, and Danny Welbeck came in for the ineligible Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang. The manager said ahead of the game, suggesting that line-up would have to pay attention to getting our defending right first.
“You have to keep your philosophy but sometimes you have to come back with pragmatic things.”
After an emotional minute of remembrance for former Milan academy graduate Davide Astori the rossoneri were quickly into their flow and won the first three corners of the match in the opening three minutes. From the second Bonaventura was a whisker away from a cross whipped into the far post. As if a warning was needed that was certainly one.
Calhanoglu’s coming together with Calum Chambers was adjudged an accidental one by the French referee. It sparked a moment of intent as the Gunners engineered a shooting chance for Henrikh Mkhitaryan who could only find the side netting. We survived a tenth minute scare when Chambers, under pressure, presented the ball to Calhanoglu who sent Cutrone through to also find the side netting.
A couple of minutes later we avoided a penalty award when Ospina rashly came to challenge Calhanoglu and the striker chose to stay on his feet rather than do a Tottenham. It proved costly for the hosts. Mesut Ozil picked out Mkhitaryan on the left and the Armenian wriggled into a shooting position. The strike deflected off Bonucci and beyond Donnarumma to silence the crowd.
Milan 0-1 The Arsenal
The disciplined Gunners were appearing in their Jekkyl personality at this point, full of industry and willingness to work hard in defence and attack. When Milan attacked and that was often, Xhaka made up a back five and the midfield players retreated to form a second line of defence. Look at our corner in the twenty-eighth minute. We were attacking with eight players. There was a long time to go but this was an impressive start.
A horrendous collision left both Ospina and Shkodran Mustafi in a heap, but fortunately both were fit to continue. Ramsey was adjudged to have brought down Calhanoglu but the resulting free-kick was headed clear by the busy Xhaka. At the other end Chambers cross was a whisker away from the head of Welbeck and Bonucci put the ball out for a fruitless corner.
Chambers himself had the next effort and drew an impressive save from Donnarumma at full stretch. The Arsenal were hunting a second goal in packs and Welbeck, freed by the impressive Mkhitaryan, forced Donnarumma into another save. Bonucci’s flying header from a corner was glanced wide of the far post and Susso’s free-kick found only a resolute Arsenal wall. Welbeck returned the favour and set up Mkhitaryan who curled his effort onto the crossbar.
The Gunners were bossing things completely and in the last of four added minutes Ozil’s slide-rule pass put Ramsey clear to round Donnarumma and slide home the second. Unbelievable stuff. An unexpectedly excellent half of football by the Gunners.
Milan 0-2 The Arsenal
Less than four minutes after the break Donnarumma had to race out of his goal to deny Welbeck a third goal after a dreadful miskick by Kessié. Ospina then dropped on a tame effort from distance by Bonaventura. The same player then thumped a golden opportunity over the bar from close range. He then had a third effort deflected one over the bar for a corner. Clearly Gattuso had fired his team up during the interval but the Arsenal were still resolute at the back.
Milan too had switched to a four at the back instead of a very successful three and we were finding holes where few had been expected. The luckless Bonaventura sent another hopeful long range effort into the fence in front of the Curva Sud. The sight of Kolasinac, recipient of an absurd yellow card, signalling to come off was a blow. He had been excellent on the night and Ainsley Maitland-Niles deputised. Milan took the opportunity to make an attacking change sending on former Blackburn Rover Kalinic for Calhanoglu.
As the midpoint of the half we were being pegged back as the rossoneri, determined to get something out of the night, dominated long spells of possession. Ramsey was the recipient of another dubious yellow card when the theatrical Biglia performed a double-pike under the referee’s nose. Again the wall stayed firm from the resulting free-kick. The visitors were giving a defensive masterclass to the one-time kings of defending.
The chants of “Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal” reverberated around the San Siro from two thousand throats as Milan prepared to send on former Liverpool man Borini for Calabria. That was the cue for us to waste a few more precious seconds by replacing Ozil with Rob Holding. A proper back three now in operation as the Gunners looked to close out a thoroughly professional performance.
Ospina was quick to play the sweeper when finally Milan set Kalinic free down the centre-forward channel. Chambers hobbled off to make way for Mohamed Elneny who had five minutes plus stoppages to do a passable impersonation of a right-back. Impressively we took the view that attack was the best form of defence in the final five minutes. It is a while since we have seen such a spirited performance from the lads and there will have been raised eyebrows around Europe at this performance.
Five added minutes were signalled and forward came Milan again. The not so thin blue line, superbly martialled by skipper Laurent Koscielny, were in the form of their life tonight and held firm. Where has this Arsenal been of late? Will they turn up against Watford on Sunday? Let’s see then. For tonight let’s just enjoy a fantastic performance from an under-fire team.

Screw you GSD. You never saw that one coming!
Here we come.
Didn’t think we were that good, they were just abject.
A good win but ….
That shot at the end sums up Danny Welbeck totally and should be the sole clip shown on his highlight reel at the end of his career.
Cynic what did you mean a rickety chair and….something else in the last drinks?
Great report and I am delighted my pessimism was not necessary.
This was much better and against a side that weren’t top notch I thought we were much the more assured side.
Some very good performances- Koscielny, Kolasinac, Ramsey and Welbeck who worked so hard. Two lovely assists from Ozil.
Great effort Im delighted for the diehards who went out to support the lads in Milan . Hope they have a safe return
Koscielny was excellent indeed. No clean sheet for Cech but Ospina could not be denied.
Cynic. Total cobblers. Every man jack played his heart out and defended with huge spirit. Absolutely fantastic performance. Looking forward to next Thursday night already. Brilliant night.
Welbeck wuz fouled on that play Cynic. He gives it all whenever he is selected, and is not Arsenal’s problem
Cheers H. That is a great match report.
I’m so chuffed with that. Top stuff from everyone.
Ooh to be…
We play great and win, after being in such a mess lately. We do a top job of stopping Milan from showing their best form, despite their fourteen game win streal or whatever. And then people chalk it up to Milan being rubbish. That’s not what I saw.
Cheers H!
Fucking magic stuff! Good to be alive stuff!
#lovinitlovinitlovinit
and I really give a fuck how Milan played, The cunts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S8TCIizhvg
Great result and more importantly, a far better performance than what’s been served up of late.
That was most welcome. Good write-up, ‘holic.
Welbeck was excellent. He looked strong and fit for the first time since his latest injury. He still can’t finish but he created a lot of space for Ozil, Miki, Jack and Rambo and they used it to win us the game.
I loved that after his “shot” at the end he turned to ref and had a whinge (face saving? I’ve not watched the replay). When he saw he was not getting a decision he got straight up and sprinted at the Milan defender with the ball to apply some pressure. I’ll watch a less talented player show an attitude like that with happiness any day. And I’ll sing his name and be proud to see a cannon on his chest.
Heh GSD love you mate.
and I’m gone …
GSD at 18. Spot on mate.
Great review, Goonerholic.
Have to raise my hand and say that Mkhi did the business today. I had previously suggested dropping him and Chambers but thank God I’m not the one calling the shots.
Mkhitaryan, Ozil, Welbeck, Ramsey, Wilshere, Koscielny and AMN, when he came on, were outstanding.
This result should see a great spike in confidence and as a result produce renewed vigour.
just to say afore I go – Le Bob? Off the arses? Hope you’re well mate if so.
I doubted our chances tonight I have to say this was a much better performance especially for a very fragile team of late. I don’t think Milan was good though they attacked like us with no end product. Great two goals and assists for Ozil.
I feel for Welbeck a little he’s trying hard and today was no different, one he bangs one in I believe they will flow he needs his confidence back.
Great report Holic at last 🙂 Let’s enjoy the win with a glass of red! 😀
I’ve got a weird question about the BT coverage for anyone who sees it more regularly than me- I never watch anything apart from the game, as I don’t care about the “analysis”. Today I happened to notice as i was looking up from my phone to the muted TV that they did not show the female host in close up at all. They showed plenty of Jenas and MonkeyHead. But none of the back and forth close-up shots that are normal when people are having a conversation. When it became too weird that the camera had been solidly on Keown without a break or reaction shot for ages they pulled the shot back to show both him and her. Is this how they usually do it? I thought it was really weird.
It is International Women’s Day today. I’m not going to draw any conclusions about that, but it certainly popped into my head as I watched a major TV company display a noticeably different policy in the way they presented the three people in the studio.
Cba remember this one?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhUbOcU6g74
Esso and Countryman. Thankyou both- top men.
It’s not every game that Arsene and Welbeck come out of in such a good light. I’m more than happy to acknowledge the good days and give credit where it’s due.
And Welbeck must have a huge ratio of how much i like him versus how good he actually is at football! I hope Arthur is right and he bangs one in and goes on a run. It would be the most Arsenal thing in the world to spend over £100m on top striking talent and then watch Danny Welbeck keep them out of the team with a string of goals scored without use of his feet or head but a new vision off what is possible with his shins and arse.
The Invisibles win an away game.. Yeah!!! Might be a yellow, but please give Deeney the ‘cojones’ sign this wkend
Milan didn’t play well because we didn’t let them. Unbeaten in 13, 6 wins in a row without conceding a goal before tonight. I don’t think the back four suited them, maybe.
Arsenal till i dye, mein herr …

Psed – when Arsene goes can he take cynic with ‘im?
UTA!
No AL, Cynic’s alright. Been through hard years before this current spell. We’re allowed different opinions, just not abusive ones.
I would love to know what happened at the Club in the last 4 days . Tonight both individually and as a team we performed to our potential, something which has not happened in weeks.
Pride has been partially restored in Italy and we must hope that the positive vibes of this win transfer to the Emirates at the weekend.
Well done everyone.
Looking forward to next Thursday now Delia. Even I am taking a half-day to be there. ?
If you say so, ‘H.
UTA!
Good night H
A little ray of sunshine after a torrid few weeks at the Ems.
Arsene had a spring in his step after that gutsy effort.
I really think the early goal made all the difference.
Gave the boys belief, and Wellers whilst not the most talented of footballers, showed once again why Arsene loves him, because he never gives up trying his heart out,and you do need the workhorses to complement the talented ones.
I hear on the grapevine that Stan sent Arsene a text after the game to ask him if he would sign a new 5yr contract. !!
GH goin’ to Europey. Ya gotta love it. 😀
I just want to add, and it is nothing profound, that I will remember Ramsey for the rest of my life. I’m not even going to go into detail like “He might not be the most skilled player ever to play for us and…”
I just don’t fucking care. He’s always going to be one of the big ones for me. From being announced on the Man U website before signing for us instead, to decisive Cup final goals, to just getting the (excuse the language) fucking goal on a night like this.
Fucking love that guy. Bad days included.
Those players either did it for Wenger or for themselves or more likely for them both but it was a good response. I’ve doubted them so much and I shrieked every time they gave the ball away but the nerest they came to scoring was in their first attack and we played cohesively to shut them out. If we can show the same quality next week it will be enough.
And we won wearing our unlucky blue away strip which usually jinxes us.
Well done to the team . Two full-back injuries though and Nacho unfit too and Debuchy gone. That might mean a debut for one of our bright youngsters or Reiss Nelso playing in a five .
Winning sure as hell beats losing – Arsenal bloody Arsenal as some would say 😉
Up The Arse,
Yessssss!!!
That is all!!
UTA
Nice one Toby! Agree totally. He’s been a top player for us.
Chippy@39: Indeed.
Cracking result 🙂
Enjoyable report, thanks Guvnor.
So this is what it feels like when you win!!
Absolutely chuffed!!
Brilliant stuffcynic.
You are not behaving like a fan mate. Trying to find fault after a great win and performance? Really?
You don’t need to do that. The media including the BBC are more than happy to do that for you. Compare our coverage of us winning vs the spuds losing ffs!!
Oh me of little faith!
Great report.
Great performance – every man a hero.
You summed it up with this one clause:
“It is a while since we have seen such a spirited performance from the lads”
It has indeed. Now you’ve found it, don’t let it go, fellas.
COYG
when Arsene goes can he take cynic with ‘im?
If it’s tomorrow I would be happy to go.
You are not behaving like a fan mate.
Funny really, there’s been a lot of angst in the past few weeks and some of the worst of it has been from you, if I’m not mixing you up with someone else?
Nothing has changed. The man who was not good enough any more yesterday is still not good enough any more today. That’s all there is to it really.
Some of you may have missed the “A good win” line, because it was, but we’ve been here so many times in the past and nothing is any different in the long term so forgive me for not getting carried away that for the first time this calendar year, we actually played quite well.
Everybody now appears to have wiped the last four or five months from their minds but fair dos.
actually welbeck was not excellent tonight nor he’ll ever be cause he’s
just not a great player…
neither is granit but he was pretty good except he can’t talk to his boss
like that
now that is naughty
My view of the game was somewhat coloured by the mixed feelings I had before it, expressed in previous drinks, I guess.
Apologies if anyone is offended by my lack of joy. I’m always happy to win games, even if it doesn’t seem like it.
Excellent result, but the luck went with us for a change. Some points to consider:
1. Had Calhanoglu done a Wilshere and left his trailing leg in they’d have had an early penalty and possibly a red card(?) for Ospina.
2. Miki’s goal was a lucky deflection. Unlike his open goal miss which hit the bar when it had to be easier to score.
3. They had twice as many shots on goal (16), but managed only one on target. We cannot rely on them being so profligate in the 2nd leg.
4. Relying on Danny to score is as desperate a measure as I have ever seen. But playing him at LW makes the most of his speed and energy. I suggested in the preview that allowing Rambo to raid forward would more likely lead to a goal, and good Lord look what happened!
5. Kola just about got away with an aggresive display, but came close to red, imo. I love his attitude, but not convinced he has the quality we need. Just a little too clumsy at times.
6. AMN played really well again in his cameo, and I still reckon he’s a better attacking fullback than midfielder.
7. Excellent referee.
8. Miki and Mesut played really well (beautiful assists from the latter), but Jack was our dynamo. He still went looking for free kicks, but less complaining than recently.
9. I even saw promising signs from Cal.
10. Milan are a better team than they showed and, if Gattuso gets them half as fired up as he himself always played, the 2nd leg will be a lot tougher.
Nice one, Holic !
Had to miss the game earlier so the report is much appreciated.
Please give Cynic a cuddle and a happy pill ?
Oh, I see he’s been in again while I dozed off ??
I’m always in, except when I’m out, then I’m not in. I’m out.
When I’m in, I’m not out but when I’m not out, I’m in.
Owzat.
(from previous drinks for Porco – Looking for a rickety chair and skipping rope just meant that, if I was a Milan fan getting beaten by this Arsenal team, I may be looking for the exit. If you get my drift. A *whoosh* attempt at dark humour).
Cynic,
I didn’t see the previous bar at all – too busy unfortunately.
In any event, I more often than not really enjoy your humour. Having left my @50 and then seen your reference to the last drinks, I was actually hoping I hadn’t said anything to cause offence.
As you were then, cheery chops ???
I’ve sort of always got my tongue in my cheek* with all the gloom and try not to get too angry and bitter with it all. Apart from when the game is on, but that’s different. I type what I’d be shouting (and often am shouting what I type anyway)
*It’s better in there than in someone else’s after all.
The mood swings all the time. Football innit.
Speaking of which I went through a phase of really not liking Ian Wright (or Ian Wrong as the wags call him, and I don’t mean in the Beckham sense of that word).
It really ended, that phase of not liking him, with his first appearance on the Arseblog Arsecast. The sheer passion with which he spoke on that chipped away at the “he’s just another mouthy ex player pundit playing to the gallery” stuff in my head.
Then that Rocky and Wrighty thing on BT Sport blew me away and I think I fell in love with him again when I watched 89 and he cried over David. I mean.. fuck, how could you not cry as well watching that?
I’m pretty sure he reads the blog if not the drinks (Would you? Oh) but if he does happen to see this little bit of dribble, you made me blub you bastard… 🙂
Rambling now, the drugs are starting to work. Or wear off. One of the two..
The really sad thing for me, wrapping up a boring post, is that none of this lot will EVER mean anything to me, no matter what they do. If I ever met any of the 89 or 91 squads, though, I’d be like a star struck kid.
Perhaps not Marwood though 😉
Nighty night.
Over to you, Arsene.
Great stuff @54, Cynic.
Never in doubt? ha ha.
Haven’t seen anything of Milan lately but am wondering how they’ve been on that run – they were a bit crap really.
5-0 for the weekend please and a ball jammed UTA of that prat Deeney.
UTA.
“If you want to be at a place to develop and get first-team football, maybe you have to look elsewhere than Arsenal.”
That’s why McGuane left. Also says Arsene Wenger never once spoke to him.
Oh well.
Noosa@57, agreed. Would be really nice if Sead could give him a proper rimming, he’s such a despicable toerag.
I enjoyed your report as much as you clearly enjoyed the match. Pity I was only a few drinks in before the whining started though. Enjoy next Thursday, I’ll look forward to your report and may even catch the match here.
Come on now, Cynic. It was an excellent all-round performance from the lads and we need to recognise that accordingly.
Granted, things could have got ugly if it wasn’t for Calhanoglu’s honesty. But I’m a firm believer that these things even themselves out over the season.
And had it been for better finishing, it could have been 4-0 by half time.
Now to finish the job next week, and hope for a favourable QF draw (i.e. anyone but Atletico Madrid!)
What a great result that was. Nice to see a performance with a bit of fight and some spirit. An away win in the San Siro is not to be sniffed at.
As AW said, it’s still only half time so let’s just build from here.
Regrettably, patenting duties will prevent me from making the home leg although I should get the opportunity to actually see the whole game. Let’s hope there is a quarter final for me to have to make.
Now for Watford.
Nice write up H.
I think we played well against Milan because the pace of the game was slow and even Xhaka appeared to have time on the ball. Watford wouldn’t be anything like Milan. The pace will be breakneck and Deeny and party will be doing everything to show that we can’t handle a physical battle. I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose to them on Sunday. Given our recent form, the Milan result is an abberation and we may revert to normal against Watford. However, I will be thrilled if we do beat them.
I’d normally be worried about losing 3-1 at home, especially as I’m travelling over from Dublin. But it should be ok as this is precisely the time of year we launch our little end of season run, which always fools plenty of people and tends to spring the celebrated get-out-of jail card when Stan pays his annual springtime visit (“What’s the praaablem you guuuys?”) drinking in the hearty rendition of “Only One..” from the, er, faithful. Furthermore, Wenger will stack all his chips on either black or red for next Thursday’s return with the rossoneri (see what I did there ?). I expect the Under 15s to be selected en masse to take on the ‘Ornets and no doubt Troy Deeney will eat at least 4 of them for his afternoon tea. Several first team players will be rested and the season ticket holders should expect absolutely nothing from the rest of our Premier League programme. Thereby, in fact, breaking the usual trend of a hot end of season run in the league. But that’s the message the players will get from the manager, ie, just turn up for me in Europe. That’s what I hate about my club these days, a la carte performing, coasting along for long holidays then a desperate effort to seize the moment (usually when the weather warms up and the various mittens, snoods and under-armour can be discarded). It’s weak, it’s soft, it’s unprofessional, it’s high risk (eg League Cup final when it goes t*ts up) and it comes from the Manager. On paper we have some fantastic players and it is nothing short of disgraceful that Mikhi and Auba are already infected by the malaise. Of course I still hope we win the Europey since CL qualification is so absolutely massive. In fact I can’t wait to get over to the Ems again, especially for a European night. COYG.
I think we were the only English club
to win in Europe this week 🙂
Like most I hope we stick it to that
mouthy fuck Deene at the weekend.
I also hope we give a break to a
couple of players, we’re odds on
to be 6th and may as well rest a
couple.
Cynic@54
I also loved the 89 and 91 teams. Unfortunately, they were managed by a man who within three years thought it was ok to buy several sub-standard Scandinavian players in return for hundreds of thousands pounds paid into his bank account. Not surprisingly and as a result of these dodgy deals the team slipped to mid-table, playing some of the worst football ever seen. Fortunately, AW came riding over the hill to our rescue, and within a few years, had produced several title winning sides, capable of the most sublime football ever seen and redeeming our reputation in the process.
Great win last night and congratulations to AW and the boys.
Deeney isn’t so bad.
Except when he opens his mouth.
Perhaps we should just play in Serie A.
“Several sub-standard Scandanavian players” being the grand total of two, one of whom was a European Championship title winner.
Rescue? lol.
https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/the-5001-shot-that-would-cost-tottenham-champions-league-football-even-if-arsenal-and-chelsea-finish-a3786196.html
How funny would this be????
TTG. Take note.
?
Re: Steve T
Please don’t make me larff too hard, but the annals of Sp*rsdom could use a sparkling new chapter such as that one. 😀
Just wondering, if we had actually signed Jonny Evans in January would he still have been arrested for stealing a taxi in Barcelona?
january jonny?
gimme january jones
even in march
I make it three, Cynic. John Jensen, Pal Lydersen and Stefan Schwarz and all not good enough. The point is they were bought with the club’s money, which in those days only came from supporters pockets. Basically, GG diddled the supporters and did very well out of it.
Steve T
I believe it will come to pass…and if it did we would need incontinence pants throughout the close season! ?
Devon Stu/ Cynic
I know Cynic rates George very highly and he is a huge Arsenal man. He was naive/ dishonest in dealing with Hauge and while not condoning it every manager in the league was doing similar things with impunity. Some may still be doing it or were doing it after GG’s episode.
Jensen and Schwarz were reasonable buys although they both underperformed but JJ has several medals and SS played at a very difficult time for us. Lydersen was the questionable deal. I don’t think I ever saw him play!
My team for Sunday is
Cech
Chambers Mustafi Mavropanos AMN
Elneny Wilshere
Mkhi Iwobi Welbeck
Auba
Iwoeful for Ozil, TTG? Is the latter injured? Otherwise I’m with your selection all the way.
If the idea is to rest Ozil (as well as Rambo) you have to play Jack behind O’Bangerbomb. And I’d try Kola as El Niño’s partner.
…Kola being an ideal match for Deeney, physically.
mavropanos
dear lord
r u on heavy drugs or just
ya know
SOFT!
Steve @ 70 do you know what, I’m going to put some money on that you never know something tells me we are due a European Cup! 😀
and TTG….
Everything on line up looks good apart from ………(fill in the space) 🙂
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYD-DIggB2k
Kola is injured Chris.
I’m resting Ozil but the call on Jack is good
Maybe even play Nelson wide and Mkhi number 10
not kola but bola
Schwartz wasn’t a Hauge player and the dealings Graham had with Hauge took place two or three years before we signed him.
There are some very questionable transfers we’ve been involved in over the years, and I don’t think we will ever know the full story of most of them. I’m thinking Inamoto, Park, Bischoff and players like Wellington, who was never going to play for us but for some reason we paid something like £4m for him, if I remember right.
We no doubt got all that money back, and probably more, with his six years worth of loans to other clubs, but deals like that have always made me wonder just what was going on.
We’re not alone in this, clubs sign players they don’t want all the time and move a lot of money around in doing so. I sometimes wonder if half the players that get signed, by any clubs not just ours, are done purely for the commission and to keep an agent sweet.
The game’s bent to its core IMO.
You’re probably right about Schwartz, Cynic. I was just testing you! Inamoto was probably bought so we could sell a lot of shirts in Japan or partly so. As for the others, they were just some duff, but relatively cheap buys that all clubs do. The thing with GG is that he lined his own pockets at the club’s expense, unforgivable in my opinion. TTG, I agree with what you say, except we don’t know what other managers do or have done in terms of corruption, but we do know about GG. That argument was used when Mourinho secretly met with Ashley Cole and seduced him away from the club, thereby breaking the rules. People said all managers did it , but he just got caught. No, he was the only one who got caught, and probably very few have ever done it, same with GG. Still, totally agree that money is wrecking the game.
I would also like to see Mavropanos given some game time before the season ends. Kos and Mustafi are too similar in size and style and we could do with a commanding, yet mobile, centre back.
Commanding yet mobile. What do we need with mobile when King Kong is available.

For all of those moaning about the quality of the squad and dodgy signings, just check this out for a starting 11 from 7 years ago.

Martin Atkinson the ref for tomorrow’s match against Watford is known to condone physical play (kicking the players, systematic fouling etc) and is just the ref Watford would wish for. Deeny will be in his elements. Good that Ozil is likely to be rested.
Good Gunnersaurus (not GSD) story in this:
